We have classified the 106 complaints from 2012 Ford Fusion about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Purchased a 2012 fusion sel with 35xxx miles in feb16. during the summer of 2016, the a/c blower began to function intermittently ' manipulation of the wire harness supplying power to the resistor would cause the blower to turn on/off. the blower only ran at one speed (i.e. the resistor was bad). the blower and resistor were replaced. the issue is once again occurring at ~80,000 miles. this is a well-documented complaint (blower pull too much current and fries the resistor) with this vehicle and, oftentimes, ford dealers are only replacing/repairing the blower and resistor. however, in my experience (and likely many others), the wire harness also needed to be replaced to correct the issue as continuity through the wiring is also affected when this issue first occurs. this is an obvious manufacturing defect that ford is not addressing. furthermore, their dealerships/service center personnel are not adequately educated on how to permanently correct this issue (this is evident by the number of complaints that reference the issue recurring after only the blower motor and resistor are replaced). they are charging fusion owners $500+ to put a temporary band aid on an electrical issue that should be well understood by now.
My power steering assist fault came on while i was driving home last night. it caused me to mess up my front end. i didn't receive any information about a recall, but when i looked up my vin, i found out it had a open case i need to know what to do next... please help
With no consistency in timing, the power steering has been going out. i may be driving, turning or waiting at a stop light, on city streets or the highway. this problem started in may 2016, happening 1-2 times per month. i took it into my local ford dealer and they said there was nothing wrong. they thought it could be a problem with the steering rack, but weren't sure. they denied that my vehicle was included in ford's recall of several 2011 and 2012 fusions for the same problem. now (september 2016), the power steering is going out 1-2 times per day. the "power steering assist fault" and "service advanctrac" error messages appear. i feel this is a serious safety issue for me and the other drivers on the road, and ford should be responsible for their design flaw.
Mu 2012 ford fusion lost power to the steering on the highway so when i pulled the steering wheel hard so i can get to the side of the highway when i finally got to to the side of the highway i turned the car off and turned it back on the steering wheel will not move and a message on the dashboard appears and say service "power steering know" so i had to call a tow truck and when it got to the dealership they said it is a problem with electronic steering rack and pinion faulty and it would cost me 1,500 dollers to get it fix so i started researching on the nhtsa website and found out it was a recall but my car was not affected and i don't know how cause its alot of people with this same problem with their 2012 ford fusion.
Driver seat, heater got super hot to the point of burning a few time, then stopped working altogether by 68k miles. brakes, right side front completely wore thru outside pad only by 48k miles, right rear did same thing by 70k. in both instances only one pad was shot. why only one pad wearing to backing plate, looks like pads not releasing. electrical, all windows, including moon roof, open by themselves while nowhere near car and it's locked.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. the contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle stalled and shook violently after the wrench warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle did restart after several attempts without shaking violently, however, the failure recurred on several occasions while driving at 40 mph and over. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that there was an extended warranty, however, they could not repair the vehicle unless they could duplicate the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
2012 fusion and we have already changed the rotors... && multiple tires... always getting the tire pressure symbol && now there is an eletrical problem for the power steering... many of the fuses are missing from where the manual said they should be... may have to pay thousands to get it fixed && still its just a 2012... id expect something like this on a car thats 7-10 years old but not 3...
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving 55 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated and the steering wheel required more force to maneuver. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the electronic power steering column failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 100,000.
I was driving my 2012 ford fusion home from work and was stopped at a stop light. when i resumed driving when the light turned green, my power steering suddenly malfunctioned while driving and i was no longer able to turn the vehicle causing me to crash into a pole. there was no warning, just total power steering failure while driving. it is extremely dangerous, and ford has recalled half a million vehicles for the same issue, but for some reason my model wasn't included. it makes driving terrifying.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving 20 mph, the vehicle experienced a complete loss of power and electrical functionality. all the warning indicators illuminated and flickered until the vehicle loss power. the failure recurred and the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the battery failed. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was returned to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the gem module malfunctioned and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the contact was informed that it was not a safety issue. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 109,000.
The connector to the air control relay overheats. would smell an electrical burning scent. checked online found pictures of melted wiring under dash. took pictures of that area under dash and found the same thing. the connector to the air control relay is melted. the blower fan has quit working. ford dealerships want 500.00 plus to fix this. i would call this a safety defect. it only seems to happen to cars equipped with the duel control auto climate. this incident did not cause a fuse to trip and could lead to a fire in the dash. it not uncommon because it was quickly and easily found on youtube. ford was aware of the problem, but denied is was anything other than a maintenance issue.
While driving on the highway at 70 mph my car start to stall to where im not able to get any gas. the wrench light comes on. while in the far left lane i had to make it to the right shoulder before my car stopped in the middle of the highway. as i make it to the right shoulder my car starts to jerk in which the service engine light comes on. i put the car in park and turn the car off. i wait a couple of minutes and start the car in which it starts back up. as im driving my car stalled on me at least five times before making it home. i took my car to a mechanic to do a diagnostic test which i was told that the throttle bottle need to be replaced. the mechanic cleaned the throttle body to see if that would work but it only lasted a day until my car started to stall again on me as i drove.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving 55 mph, the contact noticed a failure of the driver side indicator bulb. the contact stopped to check and noticed that the rear driver side indicator bulb was burned and fused to the electrical socket. the contact was able to change the bulb; however, the failure recurred. the contact notified the dealer of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 58,463. updated 8/6/15*cn
Power steering failed. after taking to dealership was quoted $1885 to repair. reviewing online showed a class action lawsuit for the same problems. also showed that there is a open investigation into this matter. needs to be noted that this is another complaint for the same issues that are being investigated and for the litigation that is under way. ford needs to make it right for the consumer. *tr
Received a fault message of "power steering assist fault", several times over a 2 week period. turning the engine off then on again reset it. on monday 2/23/2015 received the same message but could not get the steering to work by turning vehicle on and off again. took it to a certified ford mechanic who is currently replacing the entire steering component for $2167.00. *tr
Power steering on my ford fusion 2012 failed - i was on a highway off ramp and almost got into a crash as a result. i have contacted ford several times about the issue, they seem not to care. please help and look in to this before i actually get into a crash as a result of the powertrac steering failing. i have seen from online reports that many other people have this problem. this is now the sixth time this happened. *tr
I was driving on a highway traveling around 65 mph when suddenly a warning light came on saying "power steering assist fault" and the steering wheel became hard turn. i managed to get out of the highway and drove home on streets with very difficult and hard to steer. i since contacted ford dealer for probably there has been a recall on the problem, but they stated there is not and since my car is no longer under warranty i need to paid for repairs. i believe this issue should be consider for a recall, since the problem happened while i was driving and i easily could had been involved in automobile accident. *tr
Tl* the contact owns 2012 ford fusion hybrid. the contact states that while driving approximately 30 mph, the brakes failed. the brake light illuminated after the brakes were applied. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a faulty wiring of the anti-theft system. the vehicle was repaired and the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 57,000.
According to the driver, the vehicle was put into reverse backing out of a parking spot, then when the car was put into drive the vehicle would not stop gaining high speeds up to 50mph. the engine rpms were high and the car was "out of control" as the driver had their foot pressed on the brake. the fusion struck a few parked cars and eventually hit a vehicle head on coming the opposite way in a parking lot. there was one fatality as a result of the crash and other minor injuries from the victims. according to ford a notice was sent out in january of 2014, field service action number: 13n03, which they offered an extended warranty for the defective part but never explicitly stated a throttle body could stay open causing the vehicle to surge or runaway causing a fatal accident. see also 10649303. *dsy *tr

Interior door handle broke. i was just opening my door to get out and it just quit opening and not engaging. i have to roll my window down to open my door to get out of the car every-time. i heard that this was part of a recall but when i call the ford dealer here in town they said that there is no recall on this problem but i did here that there was a recall on this problem and on this model car on the news recently. the dealer at patchetts ford in turlock, ca said i needed a recall number. please if i can get some help with this issue. *tr
When the wipers are on intermittent they start running at full speed and do not stop until you turn it off. they replaced the wiper switch and it is still doing the same thing.
I was driving downhill at a steady 60 mph with no turns and got a error message on the dashboard to "service power steering now" and "service advancetrac now". the tow was covered under roadside assistance, however the estimate for this fix has not yet been received. for a brand new vehicle purchased with 0 miles, this sort of problem has been common among other vehicles and deserves a recall. had i not known what to do given the situation, there could have been a very bad accident. *tr
Vehicle's power steering assist fails at random while driving. at this point, it becomes very hard to turn the steering. the problem temporarily resolves if the engine is stopped and restarted again. this poses a serious safety issue while driving on highways or making sharp turns. although this issue has occurred at least 6times at random occurrences in the past 2 months, on sep 7 2014, when the issue occurred again while driving on a highway, restarting the engine did not resolve the issue. the vehicle was purchased as new in nov 2011 and approx.47000 miles on it. no engine issues or service engine light were present at the time of the problem. *tr
When first starting the car after it has been parked for a while with turning the ignition on with the key. the steering wheel feels like it is locked in position and can not be turned in any direction. this usually lasts for less than a minute or two, then the power steering return as normal. this has happened several times now in the past 2 months and appears to be increasing in frequency. the ford dealership at first replaced the passenger side lower arm and charged $637. after returning less than a week later to complain that the same exact problem was still happening. the dealership did a diagnostic check and said it was now the gear assembly which would cost $1,713.18 with parts, labor and tax. *tr
I am the owner of a 2012 ford fusion and just this past friday, my teenage son was driving the car to college and all of a sudden it stopped on him in the middle of the road (busy intersection). he was able to turn it back on and make it to a parking lot on campus. when trying to back out of the parking lot, the steering wheel would not budge and the indicator lights came on for service advance trac and service power steering. needless to say, he was stranded as i was 5 hours away. i immediately contacted the dealership i brought the car from and they verified that i had purchased an extended warranty for my vehicle. one would be delighted to hear that, only that i am still waiting on the insurance company to say that they will pay out on the electrical issue that has nothing to do with normal wear and tear maintenance. we all know how much of a hassle it can be dealing with insurance companies. nevertheless, i had my car towed by my personal insurance company to the nearest dealership (by the way it??s closed on weekends) so i had to let it sit in the parking lot for 2 days. i got a call from the dealership today, that the epas electronic steering gear is bad and needs to be replaced. imagine me hearing that the bill is $1800+ dollars. i am waiting to hear the final verdict on payout from the insurance company and will update as it becomes available. i am blessed that my son is alive and well and that he did not get into an accident, but who knows what will happen the next time this part goes out unexpectedly ! praise god. *tr
I have lost power steering several times while driving my 2012 ford fusion - mostly on the highway. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while the vehicle was on and in the park position, the air conditioner failed. the contact stated that the air condition unit started emitting hot air. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the contact was informed that the air condition actuator and wires was burned. the vehicle was repaired; however, the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 10,000.
Left for work this morning and first time i used my right turn signal, the signal made that fast clicking sound indicating the vehicle had a bulb that needed to be changed. after work i stopped by autozone to buy a replacement bulb. i removed the socket from the lens, and noticed that the bulb is melted into the socket. the bulb cannot be removed from the socket. i then checked the drivers side rear tail light bulb, and that bulb is also melted into the socket. i took my car to art hill ford dealership (where i purchased the car), and was told that this would not be covered on my warranty. i was told i needed to make an appointment to have a technician look at it. i asked to have a technician please look at it now because i was concerned about the vehicle safety. the service rep said that could not happen because the technicians would have to be paid $56 just to look. i was shocked, disappointed, and worried. i made the appt. i only have approx 38500 miles on my vehicle. this should be covered under warranty or recall. *tr
The problem with this car, is when car is in motion it would cut of loose power, no gas to engine. put car in neutral and restart car. this is a constant problem started.
I got off the highway and when coming off the ramp i got an error message stating advancetrac power steering failure. there was also a chime and the dashboard light came on. i read that turning off your engine will reset it and it did but i am afraid to drive the car. *tr
I purchased my 2012 ford fusion about 4 months ago from a family member who had no problems with the car since owning it new. since that time i have had an alert come on when i am driving that reads "power steering failure" and the steering wheel becomes really hard to turn. it has happened to me twice and my wife once. when i stop the car and turn the ignition switch off and then start the car back up the system is reset and the warning is not displayed any longer and the power steering works once again. this is very dangerous as my wife had a very hard time turning the wheel to get the car off the interstate when it happened to her. i took the car into my regular mechanic who could not diagnose the problem (he drove it around a long time) and he recommended that i take it in to the ford dealer. the ford dealer told me that it was a problem with the rack and pinion and that it would cost $1700 to get it replaced. i refused the repair because i read on this board that this has been a problem with the 2012 fusions and that others that have taken their car in to get this problem fixed, paid the money for the repair, but still had the same alert come on after the "repair." it sounds like an electrical problem to me that is reset when the car is turned back on. i expect there to be a recall on this problem as this could be very dangerous. my car only has 81,000 miles on it. *js
When stopped at a red light, power steering failed and warning message to service advancetrac. not the first time, don't remember dates of prior incidents. turning off ignition and restarting car solved problem (for now). *tr
yesterday in the evening while there was a rain storm the front lights of my 2012 ford fusion went out completely, luckily for us school teachers there was sufficient daylight to help us get home from work. several months ago, the same thing occurred while i was traveling on a busy wilmington, delaware state road.earlier the right side brake light fizzled which was replaced on february 10, 2014 and the driver's side headlight had to be replaced at the dealership the year before.in other areas, the transmission of this car has a tendency to slip whenever i move it from park to drive. in addition, last year the car battery was drained and triple a road service had to recharge the battery. the dead battery caused us to lose several hours from teaching.the am car radio reception, is also poor and subject to interference, and drops in volume. the cd player is erratic and has a tendency to skip songs and stop all together.in less than two years of operation, this car is only used for short distance travel of 30 miles a day as we fear continued breakdowns.venturing into night time travel or long distance interstate travel is not advisable given this car's tendency to lose external illumination.what is most troubling is that the internal dashboard did not warn me when the tailgate break light and front passenger beam light went out of order.the only time i have experienced the dashboard in operation was when one of the car tires needed to be re-inflated and when it was time to refuel the gas tank.i have taken this model to sheridan ford dealership where they have rotated the tires and changed the oil . on may 13, 2013, i paid $17.00 service charge to rotate the tires.at that time they conducted a multipoint inspection where it was determined it was ok.the above issues merit ford recall this car. *tr ...
While driving the vehicle the service power steering notification came up on the dash. car was still drivable with no loss of power steering. car was shutdown once arrived at destination. when restarting car the service power steering now was displayed. car was placed in to drive, no power steering was identified in addition to service advancetrac was displayed. *tr
My horn no longer works. *tr
Received a letter extending the warranty of the throttle body, but i feel this is a safety issue, especially at high speeds on interstate highways, and should be a recall issue not a warranty extension. *tr
The vehicle will stop running while sitting still (at light, stop sign), i took it in and to the dealership and they said oh yeah there's a computer update. i was never advised of the update and had to have my car die in the middle of several busy roads. after the update the car did not die any longer but that was a safety issue that should have been addressed i had to come in. the car will bog down when you press on the accelerator, it will bog down then lurch forward. the issue is when starting from a stop or any time you are attempting to accelerate. the shifting of gears seems to be slow to change. i have taken it to the dealer and i am told they can not repeat the "issue". i have had issues with braking as well. the car when in reverse on an incline did not work and i rolled down into the street. i had the brakes checked and again was told they were not able to "repeat the issue". the air conditioner will only work when it wants to. sometimes it blows cold air sometimes it blows hot air.
I was turning onto the street at about 25 mph and as i approached my home, the advance trac system light came on and then the service power steering now light came on. steering wheel locked up as i tried to turn into the driveway and i ran over the cable box on the curb because it was hard to turn at that point. prior to this incident, there were problems with air pressure in the tires at least three times. light continually came on indicating low tire pressure. car was purchased on november 2, 2013. dealership offered the extended warranty, we signed papers for it. when it came time to use it, the warranty was not there. we didn't sign any cancellation papers for it. now we have to deal with a bogus dealership/finance company and pay for a part that may or may not be needed. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. the contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle stalled after the wrench engine indicator illuminated. the failure recurred on several occasions. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
On 10/5/2013, i had to call roadside rescue to jump start car. i took vehicle to advance auto on 10/6/2013 to test battery. the printout results found, indicator light was yellow, cold cranking amps 500 on battery, temperature was to high at 124degrees. on 10/7/2013, call roadside rescue to jumpstart vehicle. i let the vehicle idle for a bit, hoping to recharge the battery back to full function. on 10/8/2013 called roadside rescue to jumpstart vehicle for the 3rd time and then drove to ford dealership. with great hesitation, ford replaced the battery. i had to tell the technician to look at the battery's yellow light. *tr
September 24, 2013-i was driving home and the car began to shut down. the wrench came up and it lose all power. i was able to coast into the median as it was 5;00 traffic. i turned completely off and restarted again. december 5, 2013.. the same thing happened as i was on a side street. i turned off and restarted. 2/24/2014 i was going to work and it cut off on very busy 6 lane highway. it was very scary as no one was behind me. i turned off and then restarted the car. i was so relieved that no one was on this busy road which is always traffic going very fast. i have a service all into ford for friday 2/28/2014. *tr
My son got into the car, going to the store, he said something wrong with the car. i said what, he said when i cranked it up, sound like i heard it clicking. he check the oil, it was a half of a half quart low. he left in 2 seconds he called back, said something is wrong, so his daddy went where he was, it was still running, but lost speed, it would only go 2 or 3 miles per hour. after getting it back home, it sat a little while and it was good to go. labor day i was on interstate 85 it done the same thing to me, but i had to call a wrecker i was to far away from home. now everyone want me to pay for the testing of the car to determan what the problem is. ford need`s to do something about this too many complaints i have read them. !!!! don`t wait until death occurs!!!!. *jb
I started my car as normal and shifted into drive. after i had started driving my vehicle had began to shake & the accelerator would not work. i turned the engine off and waiting a few moments and turned back on and the exact same thing happened again. the third time i started the vehicle the check engine light and service wrench were lit on the dash. the third time i turned on the vehicle it was able to drive with what felt like limited power. the check engine code pulled from the cars computer ready p2111. the car was taken to the closest ford dealer and was diagnosed. i needed to replace the "throttle body" & have all of my "fuel injectors" cleaned. when i asked ford what the cause of this issue was they said, "its because of the places you pump gas like walmart because they are always changing who they purchase fuel from and its not a good quality." (seriously) they recommend getting gas from racetrac or qt instead of walmart. the repairs are to cost $830 parts/labor. after alot of research on this matter i have seen that alot of people are having the same issues with their vehicles & alot of them are traveling at a high rate of speed (freeway driving). this situation needs to be resolved asap before its takes a innocent life. ford needs to accept responsibility for this problem. *tr
After some time i noticed the blower cutting off on the ac, for a short period of time then it would come back on. this happened about 3 times then one morning i got into the car and the blower would not come on at all. i smelled a burnt smell as well, i took into ford and they stated that they module that controls the blower motor had burnt up, and just so happens that it was outside of warranty by 2k miles. the dealership wanted a lot of money to replace this part it took us about 12 mins to replace. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the air conditioning system failed to blow any air from the vents. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where it was stated that the motor and wires had burned and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 36,000.
Was in the car at stop light. when i went to step on the gas the warning lights came on and car had no power steering. car was very hard to steer and could have caused an accident. got to a parking garage and managed to park and turned off the car. restarted it and power steering came back on. it happened again about a week later in my driveway as i went to leave. turned car off and it came back on again. took car to ford dealer where they said they had to replace the whole power steering assembly to the tune of $1800.00 on basically a 1 year old car! sent a complaint to ford where they blew me off and dealer said there was nothing he could do. this is hazardous and should be recalled. *tr
On 10/9/2013 i was stopped at a light and then when i proceeded to go on a green light, my car stalled without any warning or lights on my dash while in traffic. there was a car behind me that almost rear ended me. went to restart the vehicle and it did not start right away. i had to put the car in park with hazards on, in the middle of traffic, and tried to start the car two more times before the car started again. the car has been giving me issues with hesitation and vibration for the past 4 months. i have taken it to ford and they have checked my car 2 times and never was able to solve the problem. before i took it to ford the car has stalled on 6/19/2013 prior to taking the car to the local ford shop. they said it was the programming and they installed the update for the computer, but it never solved the problem. the last time it stalled on me, my husband, who is an acura technician, pulled the p2111 code out using a pocket code reader out of freeze frame data. there was no codes stored in pcm 6 hrs after the incident. 2 days later checked for freeze frame data again and there was no freeze frame data. *tr
Two failures reset by turning car off and on. one, permanent, still not working. worst failure was the second one while on the freeway. *tr
I noticed a "jumpy ride' during trip to albuquerque and back....first road trip since buying car in april,'13. it was sort of a shifting of a gear when there should have been nothing like that at that speed. started noticing around town at 35 the same jumpy feeling...just seemed like too much shifting. the ride is very "rough" ...never had a car like this...loved my '09 fusion, but this one stinks. afraid it's wearing out the tranny and could be dangerous. 3 dealers have just blown me off along with the corporate person i talked to...a "[xxx]" for my region for ford. i am worried and can get nothing done! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
