We have classified the 1266 complaints from 2010 Ford Fusion about STEERING into the following categories.
Steering wanders while driving uncontrollable at times .epas plus makes rubbing noise when turning
While in motion on the highway, powersterring fault occurred causing the power steering to become inactive. there has been a recall on the 2011 to 2012 models, which i. also believe that the 2010 should have also been included. this is a safety hazard.
My wife was driving on city streets and while the vehicle was in motion she attempted to make a turn and the electric power steering stopped working and was unable to make a safe turn. she was not strong enough to turn the wheel manually and almost crashed the vehicle. the fuse to the power steering system was blown and continued to blow fusses after driving further. it is currently at the ford dealership being looked at.
Notice of power steering assist fault and advancetrac appeared on dash - power steering completely disappeared making car next to impossible to turn/drive. no warning occurred prior to power steering disappearing. occurred when vehicle was both stationary and in motion. occurred on city streets.
'electronic power assist fault' while driving vehicle, steering locks up and becomes difficult to turn, happens on highway and city streets, while turning and while driving straight. have to turn vehicle off then back on again to reset system. has been happening more frequently. have had issue for 3 years now.
Driving and turning to pull onto my street 'service power steering now' alert appeared on display. and 'traction' light activated and i lost power steering thankfully it happened as i was arriving home. next day (today) still power steering notification and no power steering when driving.
Immediately after starting car, power steering assist fault message appeared on dash. could not turn the wheels in either direction while parked. turned off car, waited approx 30 seconds, and restarted. power steering was functional with no error after restart. drove to next destination, was parked for approx 30 minutes, and the same scenario was repeated when attempting to start the car and drive from there.
On march 7th, 2019 at 0600 hours, an error code popped up on the dash showing a power steering assist fault. car was stationary at this time at homeowners driveway. steering wheel was difficult to turn as there was no power to the steering. according to to nhtsa documentation, numerous complaints on this same related issue prompted recalls on other models, however 2010 ford fusion, which experienced same problem was omitted from original recall. further research revealed numerous complaints regarding same or similar issue prompting another investigation. unknown what the second results yielded.
For the last couple months, i will occasionally start the car and find i am briefly without power steering. the power steering usually kicks in after a few moments of waiting while parked. however, today, 3.7.2019, i started the car, i found there was no power steering, and then i received a message on my console that read, "power steering assist fault," or something similar. i turned off the car, restated, and the power steering did engage. however, now i am uncertain if i can rely on my power steering and will be getting it fixed soon.
Power steering fault electrical steering assist malfunction. car does not steer without electric assist. this is a safety hazard. to date this has only occurred when vehicle is started. turning off vehicle and restarting clears the fault. if this were to happen while vehicle was in operation, there would be a loss in vehicle control. losing confidence in having my daughter drive this vehicle.
The vehicle was stationary. when i got into the vehicle, the wheel would not turn and it said "service power steering now".
The vehicle lost power steering while driving down the highway almost causing me to run off the road and into a tree. the service power steering now light than came on
I was driving down the road and went to make a turn and in mid turn and without warning the power steering assist fault message popped up on my dash and my steering wheel locked up and i nearly died due to a head on collision as i was trying to turn into my subdivision and it locked up while i was in the on coming traffic lane trying to cross over. very scary just locked up without any warning. i've had zero issues whatsoever with it. no problems at all in the 9 years i've had this car besides the other recalls on it. cant stress enough how scary it was to just be driving and without warning nearly being killed by a car malfunction.
On february 28, 2019, i started my car to take kids to school at 6:45 sam. i returned back home and exited the home again at 8:00am. when i started the car there was no power steering. it stated serice power steering now. the vehicle is not drivable atvyhis time. i did go online to see if anyone was having this issue and ongoing that other years were recalled except 2010 model. steering wheel will not turn unless you are using extreme force to turn which will result in an accident as you are unable to mauenuver in an emergency.
I was pulling into a parking lot and steering lost all power and wouldn't turn
While driving down the road a warning popped up service power steering soon not even five miles down the road another warning popped up service power steering now and i had no control over the car the power steering went out and i could not turn the car left me and a 3 week old baby on the side of the road
My 17 year old was pulling onto a busy road and her power steering locked up. it gave no warning and said service power steering now. she was luck that she could go straight and not into oncoming traffic. i know they recalled other years around 2010 but this is very unsafe. if she would have been on the highway or in heavy traffic this could result in a major accident or death. this issue really needs to be looked into. i will also put in a complaint with ford as well. the people who looked at it said that there is no code showing a problem and can reset it which is not a great option because it will just happen again without warning.
Takata recall it keeps warning me that air bag isn't working n i keep losing power steering fluid
I was leaving my house and the power steering light came on, i turned the car off and then on the warning light went off. as i was driving, it became very hard to steer the car. without warning the power steering went out and has been out for a couple of weeks, it is very hard to turn the wheel. i can not afford to fix it right now, it seems there is a lot of problems with this car model. i had just had the air bag replaced and was hoping to have no more problems it.
The service power steering indicator came on when the technician checked the code it said it needed a steering wheel angle sensor for this particular model a power steering angle sensor is not applicable so they told me i need a new clock spring i ordered the new clock spring and it did not fix the problem. it has no power steering whatsoever very hard to turn it just happened while driving. very unsafe condition and i noticed a lot of other complaints about this being a major problem for these vehicles and models with current and newer years.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. when the vehicle was started, the power steering assist failed warning message appeared on the instrument panel. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who determined that the electronic rack and pinion and steering gear failed and needed replacement. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 113,000.
When i started my car this morning, a message appeared that said "power steering assistant fault error" i initially thought maybe it was because of the cold, but that was not the case. i drove it to work, as i did not have any other choice. i made it to work safely, it was just hard steering at turns. i began to investigate as to the problem on the internet. it seems that there was a recall for this issue for the 2011 and later models. unfortunately this is not the best time for this to happen. as i was reading this site, there are many others with the same year model fusion that also have had this issue. i would think that ford would consider to also offer to fix this problem on the 2010 modes as well, since they have had the recall on the 2011 models.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving 30 mph, the power steering failed and the contact had to exert excessive strength to turn the steering wheel. also, the service power steering warning indicator illuminated. the contact managed to reach her destination safely. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 120,000.
After driving the vehicle, i turned it off in a drive thru line and less than 2 minutes later cranked it up and received the power steering assist failure error. my steering wheel had no power steering, it took everything i had to manage to drive the car into a parking space. i turned it off and back on and it worked again. after reading everyone's experiences i find it ridiculous ford doesn't have a recall on the 2010 too! this car is a financial drain and ford has definitely lost any future business from me! this happened only a few months after ford replaced the takata airbag which i've seen others complain about.
While operating vehicle, steering system displayed error on driver information center and vehicle became difficult to steer. luckily was able to get off the road with no personal injury. diagnosis of the problem is that the entire rack and pinion steering assembly must be replace because of a failure of the electronic motor that is not serviceable. the repair is an expensive repair as the replacement unit is expensive. my concern is that this is a true safety issue. my research shows that ford changed the steering assembly part way through the production of this model year. this implies that they knew there was an issue and took steps to address. this changed assembly was later used on the remaining 2010 and carried through to the 2011 and 2012 model years that were later recalled because of issues with this steering assembly. your organization identified a safety issue with the 2011 and 2012 model years yet chose to ignore the 2010 model year. there are thousands of failures on the 2010 model year. help me understand the rationale for not classifying this as a safety issue.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving 35 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power steering assist warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was able to coast to the side of the road. the contact powered off the engine and restarted the vehicle, but the failure recurred. the contact was able to drive the vehicle without power steering to her residence. the contact called borgman ford mazda at (616) 534-7651 (located at 3150 28th st sw, grandville, mi 49418, (616) 534-7651) and was informed to schedule an appointment. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer due to the diagnostic and repair fees. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided a case number. the approximate failure mileage was 115,000. the vin was not available.
Brakes randomly nearly fail...have to push pedal all the way to the floor. i put a new battery in, it stopped, until today when i nearly ran into a light pole trying to turn on a city street. i also had similar power steering issues 2 years ago, and had to have it replaced for $2000

Warning message on dash 'service power steering now" as you are driving down the highway. you can not drive car at all and steering wheel is extremely hard to steer. had to have towed to dealership. $2100 parts and labor to fix.
1- driver side locked handle broken won't locked, 2-check fuel fill inlet and engine light turn 3-power steering problem
My power steering keeps going out it will go out then you let the car sit for a while then it will be fine but then it will have no power steering again has happened 5 times in the last 3 days. no code pulling up at body shop. this is very dangerous this should be a recall going to cause an accident
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving, the steering wheel seized without warning and "power steering default" appeared. when the contact shifted into neutral, powered off the engine, and restarted the engine, the vehicle was able to drive normally. the failure recurred numerous times. each time, the contact had to power off and restart the engine in order for the vehicle to drive normally. the vehicle was taken to autonation hyundai tempe (8050 s autoplex loop, tempe, az 85284, (480) 505-4247) to be diagnosed, but a failure code could not be found. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that there was no recall on the vehicle. the approximate failure mileage was 78,600.
The car was in motion on a city street. the power steering assist just suddenly went out. which made it impossible to turn. i was lucky there was no traffic at that moment, very dangerous! this is the second time. i bought this 2010 fusion in 2013. i have already replaced the power assist once. now this happened again!?
When the weather changed to severely cold my tired went flat and a notification of service power steering now as we as service advancetrac now i review plenty of reviews about similar problems with the 2010 ford fusion with results in accidents im concered about my safety
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving 15 mph, the vehicle lost steering control and the "no track" warning indicator illuminated. glockner south point ford (155 co rd 406, south point, oh 45680, (740) 894-3673) repaired the steering gear once; however, the failure recurred. the contact scheduled an appointment to have the vehicle repaired a second time. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage and vin were unavailable.
I was driving home and as i went to turn i noticed it was hard to turn so i pulled over and turned the car off then turned it back on and my service light came on.

No power steering upon starting vehicle in driveway, power steering assist fault code appeared in dash, no power steering, unable to operate vehicle
Driving and power steering stopped working and almost wrecked took to shop for repaired. they said it would cost $2800/3000 to fix. then checked for recall.but 2010 was not covered but 2011was covered by recall .this are the same part why is it safety concern for 2011 and not for 2010.do the people not need safety???
The vehicle was parked turned on lost power steering and posts the codes "power steering assist fault" and "advancetrac needs service." it makes controlling the car difficult and dangerous. we checked online and noticed there have been hundreds if not thousands of the same complaints. ford knows this is a problem on this model car and has done nothing about it. very dangerous and disappointing. not a good representation of an american company.
Power steering has ceased to function and the manual steering is very difficult. this is the same part number that was recalled in 2011-2013 models. why wasnt every vehicle that used this same steering rack recalled? ford wants me to pay over $1600 for the repair. this investigation has been ongoing for some time and neecs to be concluded so i can get my car on the road again. the cars steering stopped working while i was driving on a highway cloverleaf onramp, and sent me off the road and onto the shoulder. luckily, there was nothing in the way, and i was able to get control before going down an embankment.
My son was driving home late one night along a busy freeway and all of the sudden the power steering failed. message on display says power steering assist fault. why was there no recall issued for the 2010 models and al the rest>?????? very upset with ford.
Electronic power steering fault. the electronic power steering failed on me multiple times in the past week. it will be working fine then out of nowhere stop working and makes the car really hard to steer. its happened when stationary and in motion when pulling in or out of the driveway. needs to be recalled and fixed. i have stopped driving the car until it gets recalled and fixed for the safety of myself and others.
My car has 200800 miles on it, my electric rack and pinion has been replaced 3 times and just last month it went out while going 65mph on the highway, i cut off a semi truck and some cars and almost tboned the cement barrier. i complained to ford for a second time regarding the electronic steering rack and since it is not recalled it is unable to be replaced. most of the people in the call center are not fluent in english so its near impossible to get issues resolved. the part is made in new mexico and my only alternative is to purchase a refurbished rack. i refuse to buy this rack because its a known issue with ford fusions and most people who have had this issue have gotten into serious accident or near misses such as myself. the car currently sits at the autoshop while i drive a rental until i can afford to buy the 1300 part and have ford charge me an additional 1150 to install it. the steering grinds and sticks or freezes in one direction. if a class action lawsuit is ever filed through ford for failed products, then sign me the hell up.
Started car this morning 1/26/19 and the power steering assist failure light came on. i was unable to steer out of my driveway. currently towing the car to ford of kirkland, wa for further analysis.
Power steering assist default. when driving at multiple speeds the steering locks up and becomes impossible to turn. it occurs both on city streets and on the highway. than the lord i was able to muscle it to the side of the road. if my wife or daughter were driving it would've been a catastrophe.his has happened at least 5 times over a 6 month period. every time it happened i would turn the car on and off and wait for it to reset. ford has recalled the 2011-2012 fusions but not the 2010. all 3 years of fusions have the exact part made by trw (epas)
The electronic power steering intermittently stops working when driving. i get the message service power steering now message on my dashboard.
Power steering failed several times during low-speed driving. lost boost and vehicle was nearly impossible to steer in curved driveway. after third failure it became clear this could be a serious safety hazard if it failed again at higher speed. entire power steering rack had to be replaced for $2400.
On 01/16/2019 when i was leaving my house, i started the car and when i put it in reverse, the steering locked and warning lights are on saying service advancetrac. i was not able to turn the wheel. i stop and put car in park. the steering came back on and i was able to get warning lights off by restarting car. the following day it did the same exact thing. i did not drive it much till 01/21/2019. that afternoon while turning right onto a county highway, the same thing happened while partway threw the turn. i was not able to steer and almost hit the oncoming car because i was unable to turn my car to complete the turn i was part way into when failure happened. i ended up coming to a stop on the left shoulder. thank god the other driver was paying attention. and swerved to avoid hitting me when i crossed into his lane. the traction control light came on and the ! came on. and warning said service advancetrac and service power steering now. was able to restart car and it was back to normal. very scary! my car has the same rack and pinion as the cars that are covered by the recall 15s18. my car has manufacturing data of 06/09/2010. therefore it's not part of the recall. but it's the same part and same problem. please make them expand the recall to cover all cars affected. my car has 123,456 miles on it when issue started.
