Problems with 2013 Ford Focus ENGINE

On average, the 2013 Ford Focus starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 46 260 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2013 Ford Focus

The vehicle shudders and makes noise when shifting gears. when accelerating at around 15mph, the vehicle bogs down and lacks power. engine oil leaks also.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving at approximately 60 mph, the vehicle jerked and the vehicle failed to accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed that the input shaft needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v495000 (electrical system). the failure mileage was 39,000.

2013 ford focus was going 35 mph, saw a late 1990's ford ranger stop short in front of a fire station and tried to brake. couldn't stop in time and rear ended the ford ranger. the driver of the focus got out of the vehicle and to speak to the other driver and the engine of the focus caught fire about 30 seconds later. firemen were across the street and came over to extinguish the fire. with all of this, the airbags did not deploy. i called ford to alert them of this issue. they gave me a case number and within 1 business day i was contacted by customer care. they said they would inspect the vehicle to at a local dealership to find out why the airbags didn't deploy. they said they would not cover the cost and were vague about what the next steps were and how long the process would take. when i tried to inquire further, they said they wanted to know what my intentions were. i mentioned were are not trying to shakedown and sue ford, we simply want answers.the insurance company, state farm, totaled the focus and they are working with me to give ford the vehicle, but ford is not cooperating. i haven't been in contact with someone since the original follow-up and we have questions that need to be answered in order for state farm to give ford possession of the vehicle. ford has stopped cooperated and they have been impossible. this is a safety issue that we are trying to address and ford is dragging this process out as long as they can. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving at unknown speeds, the vehicle shuttered while accelerating. additionally, when the key was removed from the ignition, the vehicle continued to run and failed to shut off. in addition, the gear shifter failed to move out of gear. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer (titus-will ford, 3606 s sprague ave, tacoma, wa 98409, 888-600-9734), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified and provided case number: [xxx]. no further assistance was provided. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 28,558. *tt information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tt

For a number of months the vehicle transmission shudders, lags, and acts intermittently lurching. very dangerous. when applying gas, one never knows if the vehicle will go forward smoothly, or instead lurch or shudder potentially causing to be rear-ended by someone or hit because the vehicle doesn't accelerate to queue. all accompanied by a loud grinding sound. a piece of junk! *tr

Car went from 60 mph to 40mph to 20mph to zero and stalled and died in less than ten seconds while driving on the interstate north of atlanta,ga on nov 23, 2014. car came to complete halt when i tried to push the gas pedal and accelerate. i almost died. car has been in the repair shop at ford dealership for over 23 days now. *tr

Vehicle transmission has been making a grinding noise ever since we bought the car. the grinding noise occurs at low speeds as one accelerates from zero mph. i have taken the car to the dealer only to be told it is normal. the noise doesn't sound normal and this issue has been documented by many other ford focus owners. the noise appears to only get worse with time. this noise cant be "normal." please advise what is being done about this anomaly. *tr

I have received a recall (customer satisfaction program 14m01), yet when i call my dealership's (blue bonnet ford in new braunfels, texas) service department, they say, oh a customer sat--well, you have to talk to this line and they transfer me to an unattended number where i leave a message and never receive a callback. if this company doesn't honor their recalls, they should be fined big time! meanwhile i am stuck with a defective car that no one will fix. *tr

Car's transmission shutters and jolts. hesitates to accelerate. dangerous when merging onto highway or making a turn. sent it to ford to fix as per their fsa on the transmission seal. both dealerships said there was nothing wrong with it, but it still hesitates, shutters, shakes and jolts. this is a safety concern. it needs to be brought up to ford.

When i first got the car in september 2013, the car would jerk and shake when pulling off from a stop and was also very loud. i took it to be serviced and they told me that was normal. i took it back a few months later because i didn't believe that was normal. they fixed it. but now it's starting to shake again. in june 2014 the engine light started coming o for a few days. i took it to ford and they claim they fixed the problem. the light came back on in july, they claimed there was nothing wrong with it. the light was back on in september, they claimed yet again, nothing was wrong with it. i took it took a small transmission shop, they read my codes and immediately found a problem, claiming it was a transmission issue. a few days later, the light was back on. each time the engine light comes on, it would stall and immediately slow down right in the middle of traffic. each time ford claimed nothing was wrong with the vehicle, the engine light would be on for two days. each time i took my vehicle to ford, they would keep it 2-5 days... i couldn't get a rental car half of the time because they wouldn't actually do their job until the last day and then tell me that nothing's wrong with my car. we all know, your warranty company needs to know the problem before authorizing a rental vehicle. this last time in october, they claim to have fixed it. they claim that a sensor had to be replaced. i will never buy another ford vehicle. i cannot wait to get rid of this car! my car is still shaky. it makes a kind of loud noise now as well. *tr

My car shuddered and received recall letter to have clutch replaced work completed 10/3/14. may 23,2015 had 22,500 service completed car had 19,795 miles at this service june 8, 2015 service for check engine light on june 16,2015 transmission failure light came on returned to dealer awaiting outcome!! this car should be protected under lemon law.. very unsafe and ford is responsible. please demand that ford return money's paid & pay my loan off. how many people have to die before this issue is resolved?

The check engine light came on. the transmission shudders and hesitates under acceleration.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while stopped momentarily, the vehicle hesitated when the accelerator pedal was depressed. the contact mentioned that the vehicle jerked violently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the transmission failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 4,500. updated 12/01/15*lj updated 12/05/2017*cn

A few days after i purchased this vehicle, i went back to the dealer and told them it was stuttering on take off. i was told "this is normal, the car was getting use to a different driver, to save on gas, and that it should get better the longer i drove it". it did not got better, but worse. brought it in and they said that it needed an update, so they hooked up to computer and updated it. still did not fix the problem. next time i took it in they told me it was the duel transmission, and it was normal for it to shutter. it is now in the shop having clutches replaced and seals replaced. the service manager told me that even after this was done it would still have a shutter, just not so bad. i tried to trade the vehicle in, but i'm going to lose around $5000, in one months time. thus vehicle should never have been sold to me, i feel that i was lied to and deceived. the service manger at ford told me that this is a well known problem this car, but the assistant sales manager is telling me that it is not a "quality" issue. who would buy a practically new car to only be in the shop three times in 2 months and still not have a save or smooth ride? no one would!!!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus equipped with goodyear viva 3 tires, size: 215/55r16 (na). the contact stated that the vehicle would not accelerate over 30 mph and the change engine oil warning indicator illuminated. the contact also stated that a warning message illuminated, indicating that the vehicle would shut off in five minutes due to overheating. furthermore, while driving between 50 to 70 mph, the vehicle shook. the vehicle was taken to herb chambers ford of westborough (310 turnpike rd, westborough, ma 01581, (508) 366-8311) where it was diagnosed that the computer needed to be reset and replaced and that the tires were bald. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. the vehicle failure mileage was 97,000. the tire failure mileage was unknown.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving slow speeds, the vehicle sputtered and jerked. the contact experienced a sudden increase in the engine rpms while trying to pass another vehicle followed by the vehicle stalling. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 33,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving 20 mph, the vehicle began to shake violently. in addition, the vehicle lost power and would not accelerate without restarting the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 78,000.

Anytime while driving this vehicle you will experience grinding, shuttering and hesitation usually at lower traffic speeds , which is sometimes unsafe while merging into traffic because of the hesitation. *tr

Just like 100s of others, car stutters and hesitates. took to ford dealer in macon, ga. and problem continues and we all wonder why there is no recall. does no one care about safety and doing what is right???????????????????? *tr

Grinding/rattling noise and heavy shuddering/shaking/lurching occurs at low speeds. not normal sounds. i drove manual vehicles for over 15 years and never experienced this occurrence, with the exception of first learning how to drive a manual. it is currently in the shop for a recall (that this site doesn't note, for some reason, but ford does find). i have never once (2 months time) gotten over 31 mpg either. this was purchased as a commuter vehicle, and for it to rarely get 30 mpg is sad, considering my driving an 8 year old, 175k mile corolla meant getting upwards of 34 mpg consistently. have made 2 payments on the car and wishing i had never bought it. *tr

I've reported this issue several times. it is going to cause an accident!! when stopped at a stop light, or stop sign, the car wants to keep moving, even though heavy brake pressure is being applied. when i am at a stop light and the light turns green to move forward, the car hesitates to move, causing the vehicles behind me to blow their horn! there is nothing i can do!! this car is going to cause myself or other owners an accident with no doubt in my mind! the hesitation to take off when i'm wanting to get out of the way of oncoming traffic, scares me to death!!! something needs to be done before an innocent life or lives are lost!!! *tr

The vehicle hesitates and vibrates; a noise in the transmission; and the transmission not shifting properly. it does not accelerate and almost has caused multiple accidents. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle stalled. additionally, the check engine, the battery, and the oil warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was able to restart. the failure occurred on several occasions. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 47,000.

Cpsc: i1490081a. 2013 ford focus. consumer stated the car stalls, stutters and also lurches between shifts. *ln

My ford focus is having transmission and stalling issues as reported many times before my 2013 focus has had a recall and was to be correct, a year later it seems i am still having the same issue. at anytime while driving stop and go or just driving my car feels like it wants to fight to shift, causing the car to putter like motion and jerking motion, the car has stalled out on me before while driving 70 mph, as i feel this is a growing concern i want others to know that is not just your car. i do see many post with the same issue and its all 100% true as i love ford and will never drive anther car i feel for my safety each and every day that i drive my car. my car has been in the shop a hand full of times. as my car is brand new and should not drive the way it feels. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while attempting to accelerate, the vehicle jerked and hesitated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 22,000.

There is an obvious transmission problem with the vehicle. when going from 1st to 2nd gear from a stop it shudders and nearly stalls. this is a constant every day issue. i bought the car new, i have brought it to the dealership twice and was told that because there is no official recall ford is not allowing the dealerships to fix the problem even thought there are aware of the problem across the board with the 2013 model of the focus and the fiesta. i was basically told that with an official recall the car would have to stall out on the road or be the cause of an accident in order for the issue to be fixed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while stationary and driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning upon acceleration. in addition, the rear passenger door latch became unlatched and the door opened. furthermore, the vehicle's transmission failed due to the inability to shift to second gear properly. bertwolfe ford in charleston, west virginia was made aware of the series of failures. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 20,000.

I was stopped in line at a light. when the light changed i pushed on the gas and the car would not move- it sounded like the engine was stuck in neutral. i shut the car off and restarted it and that's when the check engine light came on. i was almost rear-ended several times as the car would not move. i had it towed to the dealer only to be told that they didn't know what was wrong-after two days i was told it was due to an update that needed to be done to the engine software and that it was not covered under either the basic warranty or the extended warranty and i would have to pay for the repair. i had the same vehicle to the dealer for a sound in the engine on 6/30 and they couldn't find anything! i have a friend who had the same issue when his car was a month old and they covered the cost of his repair. *tr

I was driving home from work, it was raining, as i pulled off the light, the car began sputtering and would not go over 10 mph. i merged to the shoulder and the dashboard lit up with critical engine fault, and a few others, the car stalled and i sat there for about 30 mins. i managed to get home that day and after sitting for 24 hours, it ran fine again.this morning (dec.9th2014) raining again, i pulled into my parking lot and the car began sputtering and when i placed it in park, another critical engine fault appeared, i have read about 100 other cases describing the same situation. *tr

My transmission is great progressively worse. the judder, slipping out of gear, deceleration when i need to accelerate, and the random buckling of car is getting too horrible to ignore anymore. my dealership told me that there has been no issues with the transmission and that i was wrong. i am reading way too many of the same stories with the same car. this is getting dangerous and i am stuck with this car. when i accelerate from a stopped position, i feel as if i am riding a bucking bronco (shuddering). the jolting and shuddering is enough to loosen my kidneys. this has always occurred on my car. but it is getting worse. but according to ford, this is 'normal' and 'this transmission is suppose to feel like a manual.' i have driven manual transmission cars and they do not behave this way. they have made it seem like cars are suppose to drive this way now.

My ford focus shudders when accelerating and lurch forward without warning when i'm slowing down or accelerating. i have had it repaired once and need to go back again. how many times do i have to go without a car because the dealership once again has my car in for repairs due to a manufacturer transmission defect. also, what premature internal wear is this all causing? will i need to replace parts before they would normally need replacing or fixing?! i'm worried the car will breakdown or there will be a crash where someone gets seriously hurt. it has been brought to my attention that ford knew about the defect and concealed the information and there are numerous law suits out there for this particular issue. i really don't feel safe driving the car anymore. i can't remember the specific date of the first incident but i can find out from the dealership if necessary. *tr

I purchased my vehicle in sept 2013 brand new with 23 miles on it. i have no medication done to my car, and for the past few months i've noticed a small miss every once and a while. this problem started getting worse at times my car would accelerate without me pushing the throttle. on 21 june 2014 the problem got much worse and started to stall when i am in neutral, and the throttle is all over the place. the car is currently at the ford dealership, this problem is all over the internet, with quite of few 2013 ford focuses effected this is a problem that need to be raised. it is a major safety concern that if left untreated could result in someone losing their life. *tr

The engine and transmission stutter when taking off.

Ford focus st (manual transmission) stalls repeatedly when coasting to a stop. once stalled while driving at 40 mph which is potentially dangerous. sometimes the idle drops very low (500 rpm) but doesn't stall. no check engine light (cel). dealer said without cel there is no indication of a problem. from online research this appears to be a widespread problem with 2013 focus st. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that the check engine warning lamp illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the techcnician was unable to diagnose the failure and stated that the contact could drive the vehicle as long as the check engine sensor light was not flashing. also, the contact stated while traveling approximately 50 mph, the vehicle stalled. the dealer was contacted and the vehicle was towed to the dealership for further inspection. the manufacturer was notified of the faiure. the approximate failure mileage was 23,787.

As i was waiting a traffic light my engine revs dropped so low the engine quietly died. when i went to accelerate from the light i realized the car had stalled and had to restart the car. it only happened once more in the next month and a half, then happened three times yesterday. the last time the car stalled i was getting ready to make a left turn through a traffic light during the rush hour commute home. the car did start up again, but it struggled to turn back on and some dash lights flashed up me (i believe the cel flashed on.) i was stuck in the middle of an intersection during rush hour for approximately 5 seconds with a dead car. *tr

The car is experiencing transmission problems. it shudders and bogs down as i am accelerating, and often lurches forward unexpectedly. the car makes a loud grinding noise when shifting through gears. the problems began in low gears, but i am now experiencing problems at all speeds, including lurching forward. i have taken the car back to the dealership twice, only for them to tell me this is a normal occurrence. i am afraid the transmission issues will cause an accident. i am also concerned that the grinding of the gears will cause damage to other components of my vehicle. *tr

As i was driving the car, at low rpm's the car would stutter and stall. it is more pronounced with the air conditioning on. took it to the dealer and could find nothing wrong with it, i was told this is common. on my way home from the dealer the car stalled leaving a green traffic light and i was almost hit in the rear end. the car finally lite a check engine light 3 weeks later. dealer changed an o2 sensor and 4 days later in july car went into "limp mode" in first gear as i was leaving a restaurant. the car hesitated and stalled in traffic, i was almost hit in the rear of the car again. the dealer claims that the an actuator controlling the radiator vents is bad, but this should no have caused the car to go into limp mode. ford has a tsb for a wiring harness problem, the number is tsb 13-9-7 that explains the issues of stuttering and stalling, but unless 2 codes are read on the computer they refuse to fix it. the problem is well documented on fordfocusst.org website. hundreds, if not thousands of cars have the same issue. i believe that one day someone, if not many people, will be seriously hurt due to this issue. *tr

Engine started idling rough while down shifting, once the vehicle came to a stop the vehicle shuttered (rpms) and then stalled. this has happened quite a few times, but is intermittent. engine started idling rough while traveling through a corner and down shifting from 3rd to 2nd, at that time the clutch was pushed in and the car stalled. i lost power steering and slightly traveled into the on coming lane of traffic at 25 mph. the stalling while down shifting has happened quite a few times, but is intermittent. engine idles rough while at stops or down shifting, but does not stall. this happens almost all the time, does not always stall, but is also intermittent. hill assist seems to be intermittent as to when it wants to work or not work. after performing a tsb on my car the clutch stuck to the floor. after i pumped the clutch a few times it started acting normal. *tr

When driving at highway speed 65 with cruise control engaged the vehicle feels as if the engine is cutting out or engine braking is being applied the rpm's drop from 2.5 to 2.25 feels like the engine is pulsing. *tr

The vehicle stalls and shudders when shifting through lower gears. to avoid the issue you have to accelerate at a fairly high rate from a stop sign. very dangerous when turning corners. have taken into the dealer once scheduled for second trip this week. they say it is with in their tolerance boundaries. *tr

The vehicle will stall upon pressing the clutch in while in gear or neutral regardless of speed at random intervals. i'll notice that coming to a stop with the clutch in the car has a hard time finding an idle then ultimately dies. this mostly happens while the car has been running for awhile and the ac is on however it has happened with the ac off. this has happened multiple times including while down shifting into a lower gear while turning. the dealership was unable to reproduce this despite showing video proof of the issue. this is an overall safety concern when the car could shut off at any given moment while driving. *tr

Shifting into neutral (while decelerating/braking) will intermittently cause engine rpms to rapidly drop, resulting in engine failure/stall. attempts to restart the engine are typically successful, although occasionally requiring multiple attempts, due to engine re-stalling. key factors seem to be engine oil temperature, and braking/decelerating. *tr

Car is lagging and bogging consistently; turn acceleration in unpredictable, frequent transmission shuddering occurring, un-smooth shifting, i do not feel safe. low gas mileage 20-24. *tr

2013 ford focus st has stalled on the highway going 65+ mph multiple times, in addition to on -ramps and while coming to a stop, resulting in loss of power brakes and power steering. multiple times has stalled without giving a check engine light, meaning the dealer wouldn't look at it despite being under warranty. engine's idling speed is wildly erratic before and after stalling events. have been incredibly lucky so far because this is extremely dangerous and a huge safety risk. terrified of losing power again while turning left ahead of oncoming traffic or while merging onto the freeway. ford has issued tsb 13-9-7 for those lucky enough to have the ecu store a code, notice the issue and get it to a dealer while still under warranty, but this absolutely needs to be a recall before someone gets hurt or killed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled several times and the engine light remained illuminated. also, the contact mentioned that the vehicle shifted out of parked independently. the dealer advised it was normal for the vehicle to roll out of park on its own. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure and current mileage was 36,000.

Vehicle bucked or shuddered when starting from a complete stop or if coasting and then gas applied. issue was said to be fixed at this time 4/30/14, which it did run better until it happened again on 9/6/14 when i pointed out the same issue. it was determined that there was a leak coming from the bell housing and it was dripping on the clutch causing the shuddering. on 9/16/14 it was taken to the garage for repair. i am still experiencing some shuddering, especially in reverse when going slow but also at times going forward. not satisfied that it is completely fixed, but ford has extended the warranty to 7 years/ 100,000 miles. i will be contacting the garage in the near future for them to look at it again. *tr

I bought my 2013 focus se pre owned with 19500 miles in march of 2014. within a month the car was shaking horribly at stop and at speeds between 0-30mph, while grinding-like noise came from the transmission. i am in fear of my wife and my safety, i almost got rear ended by a big 1 ton diesel truck because my car would not accelerate from stop. i took it the dealer and the car was "repaired" by the ford dealership where i bought it from. after taking it home 2 weeks later i brought the car back because the same problems were occurring. ford service assured me there was absolutely nothing wrong with my car. me being a chemical plant worker working overnights made it difficult to bring the car in for a third time during their business hours. first chance i got i brought the car back to the dealership a month later to get it fixed again. i talked to the dealer manager and he guaranteed me he would help me with this issue, he took me to the ford service manager just for him to tell me "its normal" for that car to do that. they said all they could do is some computer reset to the car and gave it back to me. the service manager told me the car will start shaking again eventually and there's nothing they can do to fix that problem because that's the way the transmission was designed. i am in the process of filing a lemon law complaint against ford. will never buy another ford vehicle again. *tr

I first noticed a problem with my transmission the first week i bought my '13 ford focus. i would hear a shuddering and gears grinding when i would accelerate and my transmission would slip when shifting gears. i took it to the dealer and asked them to check it out but was told that it was normal and nothing to worry about and sent me on my way without even taking a look under the hood. i informed them i was worried about getting into an accident with it and they said that would be impossible and it was of no concern. on friday, april 25th, 2014, after driving 40 minutes to work, i started my car up again and turned onto a main city road from a parking lot then onto a residential street. there, i noticed my transmission light had turned on and my car was having a difficult time shifting gears. the rpms skyrocketed and then plummeted. i was going about 20mph-25mph and my dash is reading 4rpms. i then turn onto another main road where my car started chugging along, it felt, while revving multiple times. i had no control over my own vehicle. about a mile or two away, i reached my destination. i parked and then started to drive again where my car then stopped and i had to declare it inoperable. the next day, i had to have the car towed. come to find out, the transmission problems i complained about to the dealer were not normal and any day my car was going to quit on me. april 25th, 2014 happened to be that day. my car is just outside of the lemon law as i purchased it last january. ford is hesitant on helping me and getting my car back and running. i was told there was no problem and nothing to worry about, therefore, i did not pursue the problem any further. *js
