Problems with 2013 Ford Focus ENGINE

On average, the 2013 Ford Focus starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 46 260 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2013 Ford Focus

Timing cover leaks 1-quart of oil every 3,000 miles. this seems to be a known issue for all 2012-2014 focus'. ford will not acknowledge the defect.

Problem with the transmission has a very delayed shift from 1st gear to 2nd gear and it is an automatic. can hear the gears slip and grind when trying to change lower gears ... especially going up any type of hill.could cause a wreck when pulling off a side street to main road or when going up a hill it can't almost feel like the engine is going to drop out the bottom of the car and the car to rolling backwards.

Car was in motion in rush hour highway traffic at speed of 55 mph when engine went to neutral revving and would not move. almost rear ended because of this. car would show drive on the lcd panel but be in park. you could not move the shifter either. i had just left (5 minutes) an authorized ford service dealer after having my car towed there from a previous occurrence and explained to the service people the exact issue as above but they said there was no issue and said my focus was fine well obviously it is not and my understanding is that this has been a common complaint for this engine. to be driving at highway speeds and your coming to a stop is very dangerous thankfully i or my family was not harmed just mentally shaken. please investigate this issue as it looks as if ford is ignoring the problem. thank you. *tr

Tcm updated 3 times die to cel. 4th car wouldn't start or even engine turn over. towed to dealer, after 9 days new tcm placed in car. back at dealer for another 7 days. car driving sluggish and only getting 20mpg. ford dealer claims nothing wrong. car feels like a pickup truck.

When accelerating from first to second gear the car will shudder like it wants to stall. it seems to happen the most when there is any kind of extra weight in the car, when accelerating from a stop, and when going uphill. it will be fine for a while then all of a sudden it will do this every time i try to accelerate. the car only has 52,000 miles on it and definitely shouldn't have this kind of a problem

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that after vehicle was repaired for nhtsa campaign number: 15v813000 (electrical system) and while driving at 35 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle hesitated before moving forward. in addition, the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 50,000.

On october 6, 2012 i purchased this new automobile. february 27, 2013, the auto was taken to a local dealer. there seemed to be a shuddering/dragging when the gas pedal was applied from a complete stop. an inspection was done and no problem was found (it was happening sporadically). after taking it in a few more times they still could not find a problem. august 4, 2014 i took car a dealer 110 miles away. after describing what was happening, the mechanic told me it was probably the clutch was not engaging. they repaired it and it seemed to be driving much better. by mid 2015, the car started shuddering again, so on november 11, 2015, since i knew what was the probable problem was i took the car to a local dealer and told them what the other dealer had done. they verified the problem and had the car for several days while parts were ordered and a new clutch was installed. they told me the car was leaking oil and they would order the necessary parts (new clutch). the car was brought in again on 12/8/15 and left several days. they again ordered parts and replaced defective ones with other parts. on 1/18/16 the car had to be towed to the dealer because all the oil had leaked out of the car. the car would not move and there was a computer message stating there was a problem with the transmission. again the car was at the dealer for several days while parts were ordered and installed. on 2/16/16 the car again was brought into the dealer. this time extensive work was done on the car. three engines were ordered and another clutch was installed. i received my car back the week of april 5 (6 weeks later). on 7/11/16, the car had to be towed to the dealer (50+ miles away) because the computer message read transmission hot stop car immediately. again another clutch was put in with other parts due to the clutch breaking. my car was at the dealer for another 6 days.

Transmission is slipping really bad and gets up to 3,000-4,000 rpms then jerks really hard.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while the contact's girlfriend was driving 30 mph, the vehicle shuddered and the gear shifter became stuck in second gear. in addition, the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to bailey ford of malone (11 state st, malone, ny 12953, (518) 483-5500) where it was diagnosed that the clutch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 21866473. no further assistance was provided. the failure mileage was 70,000.

The car shudders when taking off from a stop sign or light. this is ridiculous!

Transmission does not shift into gears as it should ,no power going up hill.sounds like motor going to fall out when you park.these happens several times and at different places

I have a 2013 focus and on 3/14/16 on my way home on the freeway, my oil & battery light started flickering on and off at the same time and as it did the car was stalling out. i put my 4-way flashers on, slowed down and moved to the right lane as a safety measure. after another few miles both lights came on and stayed on and the car shut down. i pulled over to the berm, waited a few minutes, tried starting, it started and drove home with no issues. i drove to work the next day with no issues. on the way home things started happening again, the car shut down, but this time after waiting a few minutes the car never started. i had it towed to the dealer and they found that a wiring harness was up against the throttle body and wore through the protective insulating tape, then the wires causing the problem. also, in speaking to the mechanic he said that the bracket the harness was using to keep in place was causing it to be up against the throttle body so he unclipped the bracket. i'm going to call the ford customer service center to discuss. another issue was that the "book" said it would take 3 hours, but only took 2. and yes they tried to charge me for the 3. interesting at $125/ hour, that would be $250/ hour they're making while the mechanic starts on the next car! unbelievable.

Engine will stop running intermittently while driving on city streets or while turning off of a highway. also, occasionally will die at a stop light. vehicle has a rough and erratic idle while stopped at a traffic light. sometimes idling so low as to almost die. other times idling at 1400 or 1500 rpms

Transmission is overheating; light comes on while in stop and go traffic. the car shifts harshly, makes gurgling noises, hesitates and jerks. roaring and clunking coming from engine when starting the vehicle and when vehicle is running.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving various speeds, the vehicle jerked while the accelerator pedal was depressed. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, but the cause of the failure could not be diagnosed. the dealer stated that the vehicle was designed in that manner. the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. the failure mileage was unknown.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving at various speeds, the vehicle staled without warning. the vehicle was able to restart. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the oil needed to be changed. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 15v813000 (electrical system) and 14v495000 (electrical system). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 51,000.

Driving in rush hour traffic on interstate 96 near milford mile marker 175, passing in the left lane about 75 mph the engine died and the engine fault light came on, so i pulled over to the left side shoulder, could not restart, had tow truck take to nearest ford dealership to troubleshoot, 3 days later was informed that the engine wiring harness had rubbed thru on something and shorted out. the crank position sensor was bad, total repairs 700.00 for wiring repairs and parts. this car has been dealer maintained since new have all receipts, not covered under warranty.

2012 hatchback ford focus automatic the vehicle stalls whenever accelerated. it feels as if the computer sends the signal to maintain the speed or speed up but the transmission can not keep up with it, therefore it stalls. it does it when i'm driving on the city street and on the highway, the speed does not relate to when it occurs. in order words, if i am driving at a constant speed for a lapse of time it will still stall and if i need to speed up, for example when making a turn onto a street it will stall or when making a lane change.

When i stop at stop lights the engine vibrates and stops when i come to a stop at times. also the engine vibrates when i continue to drive and also sometimes the engine cuts off while driving. this is really dangerous and can also result in a crash. i just want ford do a recall and fix everybody's cars so it want be fatality.

The car just stopped in the middle of the road. it did not start again. i had to be towed. the car was in motion and it just stalled and did not start up again. it was on a busy street. thought maybe it was the transmission slipping, it was very scary as there were a lot of cars on the road since i teas thanksgiving day.

Car violently stutters and shakes on acceleration from a stop or at low speeds. no acceleration when going up a hill. car was serviced, but the problem wasn't fixed. parts are on back order. while driving the car died and a light saying there was a transmission failure came on. the entire tcm was replaced after towing into the dealer. shaking only got worse. now the rpms will jump at highway speeds even in cruise control. parts still on back order. ford says that this is "normal" for this car and there is no real fix. the only fix is to constantly have it serviced but even that doesn't fix the problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 67,000.

On 10 nov 15 at 0900hrs i picked up my 2013 ford focus after the replacement of an ignition coil/spark plug and the reprogramming of my transmission control module (ford recall 15b22). at 0930hrs while driving north on hwy 295 at about 40 mph on a straight portion of the highway, all my warning lights turned on and i lost engine power. the vehicle also felt as if it shifted into neutral. i had to use emergency driving procedures to pull onto the shoulder. i attempted to restart the vehicle but the starter did not even attempt to turn over. i called for a wrecker and had the vehicle towed back to the dealership for corrective action. i have not experienced am engine or transmission failure like this in the past. i believe that it may be due to the reprogramming of the transmission control module. it should be noted that the ford focus in question is a canadian version, with 62000km/38000miles to date. i felt compelled to report this incident as it required me to use emergency driving techniques to bring the vehicle to a safe stop (although the brakes continued to function). had i not been trained in those techniques the likelihood of a collision with another vehicle at high speeds would have been likely.

My car is involved in recall 14m01, the current mileage is 31100 mile the problem is a power lose and a sever vibration when the car is stopped in a red traffic light. this issue is getting worst every day and the car was fixed 4 times for two different ford dealers in which the tcm was replaced, reprogrammed, changed the transmission oil, the gasket and clutch, in the past the shudder was just in low velocity and now the shudder and power of lost is at any velocity or gear change. i been involved two times in a sever risk of crash when i was driving in a highway @ around 40 miles suddenly the car in front stopped, i had to change my line to not crash , i check the side mirror, push the gas change my line and then the car do not response and the car behind of me had to push the brake and almost crash on the back of my car. my car is now again with a dealer to try to fix the issue but i can,t accept again a change of the tcm when it didn't work in the last three times. if we take in a continues time frame my car was more than 5 months in a ford garage. the 2nd issue is an excessive consumption of gasoline and high emission of co my car is in mexico city,it's tested every 6 months to check the gases emission it didn't pass the test 4 times in 7 months, the dealer tried to fix 4 times too w/o answer as the diagnostic of the car was wrong in booth issue cases (power loss-vibration and inefficient combustion) i request by phone get all the information to the dealer in regard of the test for the diagnostic and codes from the ids and they service manager told me they can't because is confidential" and i say i'm the owner and driver an i need to know what is happening because i'm in a risk of crash and they can't hide me this information i just check the tsb 15-0120 procedure in your web site to know what they will do ...

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle began to vibrate. the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to accelerate and lost power. the check engine warning light illuminated. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission control module and clutches in the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. the vehicle was taken to another dealer, but was not diagnosed or replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 79,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. on several occasions, while driving at undisclosed speeds, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to respond. the contact stated that the vehicle vibrated abnormally and the passenger side motor mount was replaced several months ago, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to butch ostalet ford lincoln (9274 us 49, gulfport, ms 39503, (228) 863-5525) where it was diagnosed that the clutch was slipping. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer stated that the warranty period had expired and no additional assistance would be provided. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

Since i bought my car new in 2013, it has had a persistent transmission shudder that is dangerous, and ford tries to stick band-aids on the problem with software updates and even a replacement clutch -- none of which fix the problem. this problem causes the car to shudder violently when accelerating from a stop or nearly any time the transmission changes gears. it has happened since i purchased the car. it makes it scary to drive when the car responds unpredictably -- lurching forward toward another car or not accelerating when getting on a highway. ford should have to recall all cars with this faulty transmission. i've had it serviced under warranty 3 times for this issue and ford cannot fix it. the us government must protect people from companies like ford who put profits ahead of safety.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. ever since the vehicle was initially purchased, there was a safety concern with the clutch. the contact stated that the clutch assembly shuttered and affected the condition of the vehicle. years later, the dealer (pat milliken ford, 9600 telegraph rd, redford charter twp, mi 48239, (313) 731-6436) repaired the vehicle per an unknown recall. months later, the failure recurred. in addition, after completing an unknown manufacturer recall concerning the door locks, the horn, key fob, and electronic locks failed to function. the contact was not experiencing the electrical failures prior to the dealer's repairs. the contact was concerned that the recall remedy caused multiple electrical failures. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was not available. *bf *tr

I started having transmission problems in 2014, ford validated the problem and put a part on order in may of 2015. in october of 2015 the part was scheduled to be put in but they ran out of parts so the appointment was postponed. a week or so later the transmission issue caused an accident. the transmission stalled/jerking as i was making a left hand turn and my son and myself were struck by an oncoming vehicle. after numerous attempts to have the vehicle fixed followning the accident, we voluntarily surrendered the vehicle to ford credit. the vehicle is not safe.

I am not an expert so have no idea what may be causing the problem. i purchased car in late september 2015. early on i noticed that when starting from a stop it felt like the engine was going to stall. very rough running at slow speeds such as in heavy traffic. my driveway is at blind curve of a high speed 4-lane road. to say i am nervous pulling out would be an understatement. i want to move and fast. since i may not always be able to see what's coming, i have always depended partly on my hearing as i pull out but during cold weather, in addition to rough running engine, the driver's window does not work until the temperature rises (all other windows work fine). ford dealer in waynesville nc supposedly repaired the problem under warranty before i signed papers on the purchase at waynesville chevrolet. i believe it was 10/5 before i actually had possession of the car.

The vehicle has stalled multiple times. it has happens when the clutch is depressed. the rpms drop down below 500 and sometimes the engine stalls. sometimes the engine will just waiver at low rpms and regain idle.the car has also stalled at high speed on the freeway, with traffic backed up, i depressed the clutch, and the engine stalled.

Driving on i80 west bound and my rpms shot up to 5,000/6,000. i proceeded to take my foot off the gas to let the transmission catch, however, when i put my foot back on the gas my rpms shot up again. my transmission had completely died. i had no ability to move forward. i managed to make it to the right hand shoulder from the left lane. i shut my car off once i reached the shoulder to see if that would help the problem. when i tried to start my car it would not turn on. i had dashboard lights but the car would not start. my car was still saying it was in drive when it was in park. my car ended up being towed to ford and they told me i needed a new transmission control module and that they have had several focuses come in with this problem in the last two to three weeks, so they are now keeping this part stocked. this could have been a very dangerous situation given that i80 is a very busy expressway and my car died while i was driving it.

I was in heavy traffic, stop and start, and when i re-accelerated after going very slowly the car did not go and then it just died. i turned car off, got it started within 200 yards it died again. i once again turned car off, restarted it and was able to pull off the road. in the meantime, people behind me were honking wildly. luckily, no one rear ended me. i was able to get car to my mechanic who told me the ford people needed to look at it. this morning the car was towed as it now does not even turn on. ford people said they had no idea what it could be. if i had been on a highway in stop and go traffic like that i might have been seriously hurt. ford seems to be unaware of any problems. i think this is something they should investigate.

I have had my car in a ford dealership to be repaired five times. two involving recalls on my transmission, due to shuttering and hesitation to shift while driving. i believe this vehicle is highly unsafe since i never know if my car will be able to accelerate properly while changing lanes. this happens mainly in the city streets when being in first or second gear.

Engine light comes on, car will not back up, driving car will hesitate going forward, and sometimes as driving hesitates to change gears. took to ford three times including a free receiving recall letter. had to buy a battery for them to check car! no problem starting ever! idling car will cause car to hesitate going while driving. recall was for a part for transmission, and asoftware update program 15b22

Last night i hit a deer going 70 miles per hr. on the highway. my leg airbags deployed but my steering wheel did not only the clips came out. due to knee airbags i have huge bruises on both legs. i feel that the steering wheel has a defective airbag since it did not deploy. if i had hit a tree instead of a deer its possible i would not be here to file this it did not protect me at all.

Bought this vehicle used with 34,869 miles on july 8, 2015. after having for about a week, noticed shaking, grinding noises, seems to be "missing" in the transmission. took to dealer on 7/21/2015 and the reprogrammed the tcm. vehicle still made same issues so i took to a different ford dealer 7/27/2015 and they did the same thing. on 8/13/15 the vehicle would not start. roadside assistance came out and jumped the vehicle to start and "faulty transmission failure" appeared on the dash screen. i attempted to take the car to the dealer but the vehicle would not go into reverse or drive. called tow truck to take to ford dealer that same day. the next day they claimed it needed a new transmission control module. as of today, 8/19/2015 - the car is still not fixed and is still in their shop.

Transmission lags, shifts rough, jerks, and hesitates especially when pulling from a light or turning into enter roadway. defective transmission clutch. recent class action suites settled on this with ford co. no recall at this time. i had purchased this car from the dealer in 2014. i have had to visit the dealership maintain 6 times. it has had transmission control module was adjusted and then replaced. also, the transmission clutch adjustment and then replaced. these attempts only work temporarily. the dealer treats me like i am making this up, however, there is plenty of information available online with regard to this issue. there was a recent (march 27, 2017) class action suit settled in california for this exact problem. i have all of my documentation for the maintenance of the vehicle. the manufacture has admitted to the issue and extended my warranty on the transmission, however, that is not sufficient as it will continue to have this problem and i have lost significant use, value, and time related to maintaining the car to function properly.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving at approximately 65 mph, the vehicle decelerated and stalled without warning. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 66,800.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the engine stalled without warning. the contact also mentioned that the gear failed to reverse the vehicle intermittently. the contact also stated that while attempting to accelerate, the vehicle hesitated. the failures was persistent. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified about the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

My car stalled going down the road at approximately 35 mph upon attempting to accelerate the vehicle revved to the red limit, and would not go into gear. i was thankfully able to pull to the side of the road and get myself and my child to safety by rolling in neutral. ford motor company has had thousands of complaints about the transmissions in these cars stalling or completely malfunctioning while driving yet there has not been a recall on them. my infant was in the car! had i been entering a highway or something the results would have been terrible. all the company will do is extend the warranty to 100,000 miles and then we as consumers are screwed. basically they "fix" it until the warranty is up. this is not acceptable or safe in any way.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving approximately 15 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed and the engine stalled without warning. after three attempts, the vehicle restarted. the failure recurred two times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was not diagnosed. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 28,000.

Previous transmission recall work done and still having the same issue

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle started to shutter when accelerating. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who reprogrammed the pcm. a few weeks after the repair, the check engine and the pcm warning lights illuminated. the failure mileage was 31,000.

My vehicle downshifted from approx 60 mph- 20mph immediately and unexpectedly in rush hour traffics. i temporarily lost control of the car and if i had not been able to get it back under control and almost ran off the side of the road rt. 7 traveling north towards winchester and almost was hit by a tractor trailer in the right lane it lurched. i decided to turn off n aback road to see if this was just a,fluke and it seemed to do its and off, but not as roughly, revving up and down and shifting up and down, then wa fine until i turned onto rt.81 north towards inwood, wv. the vehicle continued to have was seems to be continuous revving and shifting problems, i drive it home and had my best friend follow me slowly to the parsons ford dealership to be looked at. there is a transmission/computer programming issue that ford is aware of. i had this issue in the first 1000 miles that occurred once in front of my house on bac creek valley drive, upon parking the vehicle, turning it off and restarting the problem disappeared. i commented on it during the 30,000 mile maintenance and chalks it up to a glitch during the normal break-in period of the vehicle. the last incident almost resulted in a potentially fatal condition, here i almost caused an accident with an 18-wheeler and other vehicles. i do not want my wife to drive this vehicle and feel it is unsafe and should be immediately recalled before anyone gets killed as a result. based on a research ford has upgraded the transmissions in the 2015 line of the ford focus line, and should replace the vehicles. *tr

Driving on the highway the car is non stop bugging down like someone grabs the car and pulls it back. then when i try to take off the car drops to almost zero rpms and dies in the middle of the road for 3mins and then start but acts like it has zero power and jumps back and forth trying to go. very dangerous i think! *tr

For the 3rd time in a 3 month span, my 2013 ford focus se stalled while driving. vehicle would not restart for approximately 20 minutes. this created an unsafe situation where i was stuck with a disabled vehicle. 1st failure instance occurred when i was coming to a stop at a traffic light 2nd failure instance occurred while driving at highway speeds (65mph) 3rd failure instance occurred while just after entering a highway at approx 45mph. *tr
