Problems with 2013 Ford Focus ENGINE

On average, the 2013 Ford Focus starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 46 260 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2013 Ford Focus

Car is driven in moderate raining conditions in va. suddenly while maneuvering in a walmart parking lot a fault 'engine faul service car now' showed up on the dashboard screen. didn't feel anything different at first and continued driving back home. about 2 miles later in the middle of route 28 the car lost acceleration and completely stalled in the middle of the highway. was able to maneuver it on the shoulder before car completely stopped. restarted engine but same error showed up and car only moved a meter before stalling again. had it towed to ford chantilly va. dealer called a few days later and stated it's a 800usd repair on a electrical harness issue. it is the same electrical harness recall that ford released but only for the ford focus st models and not se. this is the 2nd time this year that i've brought the car back to the dealer for major performance issues. the first one is covered by the transmission pcm recall. for a 2013 model that is barely being used (car has only 35k mileage) this is unaccepatable. btw car also has an issue on the driver side power window (doesn't go down) but i have not requested them to fix them yet.

Well have had nothing but problems with this car, but here is the latest. i was driving and the car started making noises and then it sputted like going to die out, and get really rough driving. i parked the car got to work, and when leaving it would not start. battery is new, so not that. after about 4 tries it started up, this was wed. then friday, and on way home the engine light came on, as well as had issue starting. i just received this letter today, how odd and confirmed that there is a problem and not my imagination. i have grandchildren that i pick up from school and day care, and will not subject them to this unsafe car. also, last week the gas gauge just went to 50 and it binged to let me know, i drove to the gas station nearby, and i rolled in.. now see that gauge is also or could be wrong..i am bringing it in and hoping you put me in a rental until this is fixed!~

On thursday august 2, 2018 around 8:30. the wires in the dash board caught on fire. the card began to fill with smoke. i could smell the burning and i wasn't sure of what was happening. i could hear a spark sound and i could tell that the wires where burning. this was an extremely dangerous situation, the entire car might have caught on fire , if my boyfriend didn't come and contain the fire.

Transmission shudder then driving on highway low oil light came on randomly happened before took to shop and said the rear main seal went out which caused oil to leak into transmission and making the clutch slip

At highway speed when it is warm outside with no warning from the vehicle power will be reduced to the point that speed can not be maintaned.i have to drive well under the speed limit with my hazard lights on until i can find a safe place to park and restart the car.once restarted i can continue on a normal speed.

I understand that there is a powershift recall on all 2013 ford focus cars with automatic transmission. my car falls under that recall and i want this taken care of . i plan on retaining an attorney so i can get something done about the fact that i am driving and paying on a defective car. i was driving down a steep hill and a warning about my transmission running hot came on, i had just called my mechanic to check why my engine light had come on, and had to get the car towed to the shop. he checked and told me that it was due to the powershift recall, and that ford plant should make the necessary repairs, they will also claim that in court if necessary.

After filling up the tank with gas, the vehicle stutters and feels like it's jumping when i am at a stop light and start to go. the gas gauge goes up while i am driving and the vehicle runs out of gas randomly. i was parked at my house and it wouldn't crank when i ran out of gas the 1st time (about three weeks ago) and the 2nd time (6/6/2018), i was on the interstate and the vehicle died due to no gas, yet the gauge was not on empty. fortunately i was able to get off the side of the road and call roadside assistance. the vehicle is now at at ford service repair shop and i am waiting to hear from them but the service repairman said this is a common problem, that he had the same vehicle in the week before with this same issue. last friday, i had a customer service representative with a ford dealership tell me this is a common problem that occurs in this vehicle. obviously running out of gas randomly is very dangerous. there needs to be a recall on this immediately to save lives. ford needs to take responsibility for this manufacturing defect.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact purchased the vehicle in new jersey from a used dealer. the contact was not informed that there was an extended warranty from may 10, 2013 or up to 60,000 miles that had expired. the contact stated that the engine stalled several times, there was a drastic reduction in speed, and the vehicle accelerated intermittently. on october 22, 2018, nets campaign number: (fuel system, gasoline) was issued. an independent mechanic stated that the vehicle was included in an extended warranty, but had not provided any specific guidelines to repair the vehicle. stevens jersey city ford (740 nj-440, jersey city, nj 07305, (201) 432-7272) and the manufacturer were made aware of the failure. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in any warranties. the approximate failure mileage was 10,000. vin tool confirms parts not available.

Auto stop working and sudenly shift off un highways with unknown rasons or cause. this is exprience at lease 2 or 3 times daily. several warning lights comes on. then you need to stop and restart. this is dangerous when it happens in highways.

I was driving the car started on fire 39mins after i started the vehicle . the car was in motion and i had an engine fire

I bought this car brand new in 2013. on 5/16/2018 i was driving down the road during rush hour in the left lane of traffic when all of a sudden the i get a notification that says "engine fault service now". then the engine cuts off in the middle of a busy road. the person behind me almost smashed into me but swerved at the last second and cut a car off in the lane next to me. i tried to turn the car off and then on, but it wouldn't start. it was sooo dangerous to be stuck on the road not able to do anything. i had to call the police to set up flares behind me. i have been reading blogs and i am not the only person this has happened to.

While driving at speed the car will shut off without warning. there is a recall for the wiring harnesses for other ford focuses with the same issue but mine is not covered under that recall. the engine shutting off while driving has caused me to almost be hit several times and is a safety concern.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that while driving 20 mph, the check engine and oil warning indicators illuminated as the vehicle stalled. the contact stated that this was the second time the failure occurred. the contact coasted to a parking lot and waited approximately three hours before restarting the vehicle at that time the vehicle started normally. the vehicle was driven to the contact's residence. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic for a diagnosis or repairs. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 67,000.

Transmission has never worked correctly, brought into ford to have recall of part of transmission repaired. never shifted correctly into next gear, sometimes jerked and sputtered and makes grinding noise and was told that it was because engine was 4 cylinder. early in 2018, electrical system shut down. dash lights of defrost, door lock no longer worked. trunk stopped opening, radio stopped working and all that was heard was loud static sporadically with or without radio being on, and dome lights no longer worked either. brought into ford dealer and was told car needed new clutch (due to transmission never working correctly) and was no longer covered under warranty. was told the electrical system failures were due to battery, which was replaced outside of dealer with no fix to problems at all. was told need to replace radio which was no longer any good, car less than 5 years old at this time and that the trunk latch needed to be replaced. was told none of the issues on the car were covered under warranty. also received information in 2016 for class action law suit regarding my vehicle due to transmission issues.

Ford focus shuts off when you press the brakes. it cranks back up fine but whenever you pull off and stop or try to slow down the car will shut down. it is happening constantly now.

While traveling on a surface street, at approximately 50 mph the engine decelerated very quickly. the dash instrumentation showed "engine fault service now!" the engine was sputtering and shaking as i attempted to accelerate to get over to the shoulder. i did get over safely. my wife and i were very badly shaken. after about 5 minutes i regained my composure enough to try to restart the car. it took about 3 tries to restart. the instruments were back to normal except the check engine light was on. i drove home without incident and turned the car off. a half hour later i tried to start the car and it did it again. the car has been towed to a repair shop. my wife is now afraid to drive this car. we live in arizona. the speed limit is 65 mph. the average speed of cars on the highway is 75 mph just to keep up with the flow of traffic. not if, but when this happens to a driver travelling at 65 to 70 mph there will be costly repercussions and hopefully no loss of life, but life changing injuries. this car is a death trap. i also have filed a claim in the ongoing ford transmission settlement, vargas v. ford motor co., case. no. 2:12-cv-08388-ab-ffm. i am sure that you are aware of this case. this car needs to be taken off our streets and highways. i know you will do your due diligence and please, sooner rather than later. i will have documentation when my car has been repaired, so feel free to contact me. when

The car is stalling when accelerating which seems to be a common complaint from this year focus owners. i took the vehicle to a transmission shop but they too were unable to diagnose. some of the reading is showing there is an electrical connection issue which is causing this.

Car shudders at varying severities--sometimes more mild than others, mostly severe otherwise during accelration, and various moments while driving, and during the entire process of turning. i have brought my vehicle to george wall ford lincoln in shrewsbury nj twice for this specific issue. first time they updated a module and it helped for about a week. then the problem returned. second time they had it even longer, and upon pick up i was told that the car was acting 'within spec', and doing 'what it is designed to do,' so no fix was made. car continues to shudder severely. transmission is technically manual, despite being an automatic, and the computer does the shifting. that is what i was told. however, if that is the case, then this car drives manual terribly. i contacted ford customer support chat and was told i do not qualify for buyback because of car's age/mileage. care is under 50k miles, and i bought the car certified preowned november 2017, just under a year ago. i was not informed of any recalls, or the transmission's behavior upon looking, buying, and paying for the car in full all in one evening. i have just sent a lenghtly letter to ford customer relationships this week. awaiting response. may file lemon law if situation is not handled properly. i have been told my car's issue is not safety related so it is not dire, however during inclement weather, or when going through turns, or simply starting my car gently at lights has become an issue, and i have nearly been rear ended many times. eventually i will not be so lucky as to escape yet another near-accident. soon, i can only imagine, i will most likely have a car come crashing into my rear end because of failed and shuddering accelration due to the shoddy transmission clutch shudder.

Engine tends to falter when accelerating. engine tends to hesitate. shuddering and vibration regardless of whether on city street or highway.

I purchased the certified pre-owned ford in 2014 and in 2016 had to it in for service on a clutch asy- sensor turbi issue. after a few weeks the vehicle was returned. the aforementioned happened again and was taken in for the 2nd time for the clutch asy-sensor turbi issue. on 11/17/2017 it was diagnosed with the same issues for the 3rd time, this time i was told its out of warranty. i explained that the vehicle had this issues two prior times and the clutch system was defective. i was then told to take the matter up with corporate. i also located a class action lawsuit against ford for the same issues am facing. please help hold ford responsible for installing defective clutch systems in their vehicles.

Vehicle purchased in 2015 with less than 20k miles. 1st problem, exploded tire causing minor body damage and sensor damage. thankfully just came from a stop sign and not traveling fast, no injury. 2nd problem, driving down road at approx 35mph when airbags suddenly deployed. wondered if hit small animal. got out to investigate.....nothing. vehicle then rolled off road (decline in terrain) landing rested in a chain link fence. upon inspection, discovered that motor mounts had failed causing motor to drop forwards towards radiator therefore indicating crash and deploying airbags. all components connected to motor ripped forwards as well. thankfully also no injury. if that would have occurred at high speeds, serious injury or death could have resulted. there is no reason or excuse for failure of motor mounts. this is clearly a defect. contacted ford at the highest level number i was able to obtain. requested only to address safety issue. they issued a claim, dismissed it and would not allow me to speak to anyone with the authority to address the issue. contacted chevy dealership where vehicle was purchased, they said ford would have to address the issue. then took vehicle to ford dealership to run diagnostic to evaluate why airbags deployed. this vehicle contains a module that contains data pertaining to airbag deployment. it is as simple as retrieving the data! only ford field rep can do this. towed vehicle to dealership to perform diagnostic to next be referred to rep for data retrieval. employees of dealership were not allowed by their supervisor to examine the vehicle due to the extent of damage under the hood. someone needs to be concerned with the integrity of the motor mounts on this vehicle. other vehicles may have this problem as well. if mounts were to fail at high speeds, catastrophic crash would be eminent. damage from crash would hide failed mounts as cause

I was driving home on the i- 5 san diego, ca and my car completely lost power. the check engine light started flashing. after i turned the car off for about five minutes, i drove it once again and it seemed to be normal and the check engine light was no longer flashing. then, after a week it happened again, the car died on the highway.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. when the gear was shifted into drive, the vehicle moved in reverse. in addition, the contact stated that sometimes the vehicle would stall and fail to start. the vehicle was taken to norris ford (901 merritt blvd, baltimore, md 21222, (410) 285-0200) where it was diagnosed that the gear clutch failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer multiple times for the failures. the manufacturer was made aware of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 39,000.

I have read many recalls on the wiring issue of the 2013 ford focus st model with it stalling out due to faulty wiring. my 2013 ford focus se is doing the exact same thing putting my daughter's life at risk every time she gets in it as well as my own and wray ford in shreveport la says sorry cant help you...it's not on the recall since its not an st and you will have to pay for the repairs. this is garbage ford is not standing behind their product and i am the little guy. this is the second recall for this issue and the se is not being taken care of with the identical issue. runs fine when driving, but when at a light or stop sign, it shakes, gauges go crazy and then shuts off. i just bought this car and of course when i got it home that's when the issues started. purchased as is no warranty and of course was not told of the issues but only that i should call to see if there are any recalls. help! funny thing is that it stalled on me at the red light turning into wray ford in shreveport.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while accelerating from the idle position, the vehicle hesitated and lost power without warning. the vehicle was taken to suburban ford of sterling heights (40333 van dyke ave., sterling heights, mi 48313, 586-434-0943) where it was diagnosed that the clutch and seal needed to be replaced, and the vehicle needed to be reprogrammed. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 64,000.

I have a check engine light that is on found out its a evap leak gas gauge not working ran out of gas can not put gas on gas tank with a gas can if i try it pours out the bottom when i start vehicle it shudders and wants to die out on me lack of power when i press on the gas pedal and ticking sound in engine also door latch on passenger back door does not unlock unless i push the button unlock 2 or 3 times

Transmission stop working in middle of busy intersection during rush hour. i was turning left, car was stationary waiting for traffic to pass. thankful i think it quit in neutral although dashboard was black & gear shift would not lock into any gear; could be pushed into corner business parking lot. it was fixed but never completely better nor did i feel completely safe. i had 2 clutch replacements, which were also fixed & paid by them. ford dealer replace some recall on side doors, but never fixed the recall on fuel tank, never informed that they ever got part in as letter stated.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving various speeds, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate and shuttered. on several occasions, the vehicle failed to start. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the contact indicated that the vehicle was previously repaired for the same failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 72,000.

This car excelarated on my wife jumped a curb and she ended up on a steep embankment in a pile of landscaping rocks.knocked a hole in oilpan and damaged airconditioner and compressor.it also jumps out of gear going down the highway.happened 2 times the vehicle wason the highway and jumped out of gear, you have to come to a compleete stop turn engine off restart and put it back in gear

Transmission failure. i've had the clutch strum replaced six times, most recently my car experienced a transmission electrical and actual failure without warning. i was unable to move on a highway bridge. it has been having shifting issues since i got it and makes a noise and stutters, usually between first and second gear but also in other instances. this has been an ongoing issue.

While driving i came to a stop sign and as i started to let out the clutch and moving roughly 10 mph my car engine completely shut off and power steering was lost. interior lights were still functional but when i went to start up the car again it would not turn over. this is a manual transmission but nothing was working to get it started again. this to me is unacceptable flaw in the system that put me at risk of causing an accident. being stuck in the middle of an intersection and without power to the engine. i am fortunate enough that i was on side streets and not on a highway as this issue could have caused a serious accident. i took it to a garage to get it fixed and they told me that my model was not under recall. doing some research found fords recall 14s17-s1 for the ford focus st same year (2013) as mine with the exact problem my car had. the garage that i am receiving the repairs at told me they found 5 wires that were severed and was part of the problem. i have yet to get the full diagnostics from the garage but will be adding the document to the report once this has been resolved and all issues are made aware. *tr

Vehicle jerks and shudders on acceleration from stops. vehicle also hesitates and lacks power at times. it also overhears and leaks coolant.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving approximately 60 mph, the steering wheel shook violently and the vehicle failed to accelerate. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the engine was failing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 74,000.

Stopped at a stop sign and then when i had to accelerate to turn onto a highway, it would not accelerate. it was stuck in low gear. luckily there was an exit off the highway and i was able to pull over. i was not able to accelerate past 20 mph! restarted my car and it worked fine. but then 5 minutes later same thing, it would not accelerate.

I was literally leaving the ford dealership for "shut down isssues and shuddering issues" when they supposedly couldn't "verify the problem" i was driving home on a five lane highway and my car completely lost power in the middle of an intersection going 70mph and was stuck in the middle of the freeway until a tow truck came and towed my car back to the dealership where it is currently at right now. this is my 5th attempt for them to fix it. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while idling, the engine suddenly stalled the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the canister purge valve was faulty which caused the fuel pump to malfunction. the fuel tank became deformed. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 86,364. updated 05/10/17*lj *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving 35 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was unable to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. the contact was informed that there was misfire coming from the coil pack. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. on several occasions while accelerating, there was an abnormal vibration coming from the engine. the vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the vehicle was operating as intended. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v813000 (electrical system). the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. the approximate failure mileage was 36,000.

At an intersection, the car sputters from a stop and sometimes stalls. likewise, after re-fueling the tank the car stalls 2-3 times in a row on ignition before starting and staying on. when approaching a stop, the car has sometimes had the other dashboard warning lights come up and felt like it was about to stall, with the rpm gauge bouncing around near zero, but has not fully stalled during deceleration (possibly due to me pressing on the accelerator to prevent the stall). the service engine soon light came on shortly after this began. at that time, the fuel gauge also began to "stick," not moving from position until the car would be stopped and restarted, and mis-representing the number of miles left before needing to refuel. i'm currently at a ford dealership to get inspected and repaired. i've been told that it has something to do with a pump, but nothing more at this point. *tr

Check engine light is constantly on and the engine leaks oil. the transmission does not change gears, shudders excessively and lacks power going uphill.
