Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2011 Ford F-150

After 4 hours of steady highway driving upon attempting to pass a vehicle the truck failed to downshift , lost power ( requiring me to abort maneuver) and began bucking... there was no cel. took the car to the dealer and they inspected the truck found no codes and said no problem found. they said they reloaded the programming for the transmission. this vehicle has experienced this problem numerous times since the first occurrence. always happens when accelerating and creates dangerous loss of power at critical driving periods. *tr

Loss of power while attempting to pass on three separate occasions. in all occasions i had to pull over and turn the vehicle off, let sit for a few minutes and then restart the vehicle to continue. *tr

First incident: after driving in the rain for a couple of hours, trying to accelerate out of a toll booth - the vehicle started to accelerate then suddenly lost power. it began to shudder and flash the engine light. after about a minute, the issue cleared up. dealership pulled code then performed a tsb which installed a shroud over the cac. incident two one year after first repair: same scenario as first incident - pulling out of a toll booth after driving in the rain the truck lost power and engine light flashed. a minute later it recovered and resumed normally. after an argument with the dealer (they could not pull a code), they ordered and installed a new cac and shroud. incident three two weeks after second repair: pulled out to pass a slow moving vehicle. truck lost power as it did in first two incidents. engine light flashed then remained on steady. had to abort the pass. vehicle is returning to dealership pending diagnostics. there is an obvious defective design in these vehicles that could potentially result in a serious accident. imagine pulling out of a toll booth in front of a tractor trailer truck and loosing all power to move. not good. the value and safety of my vehicle is compromised. it needs a definitive fix or replacement. *tr

While traveling down i-55, towing my travel trailer on a trip from st. louis, mo to gulf shores, al, vehicle experienced a total loss of power on the interstate. i had been driving multiple hours in the rain when in jackson, ms, i had to let off the gas to allow other vehicles to merge onto the highway. when i re-applied the gas, the vehicle started shaking violently and would not accelerate. this caused the vehicle to lose speed and drop from around 60mph to 35mph on the interstate. after letting off and re-applying gas about three times the vehicle finally recovered and i was able to continue on my way. luckily the other drivers on the highway were able to avoid me and i was not rear-ended or otherwise caused a serious accident. *tr

Truck started to not shift correctly, check transmission icon came on, luckily was coasting down a hill at about 45 mph. checked the trans temp, indicated 205 f. noticed smoke coming from behind the truck. pulled over, found transmission fluid pouring from it. 2011 f-150xlt 6700 miles, not happy with this incident. after reading several posts, ford should recall this truck. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle vibrated as the contact passed another vehicle. the accelerator pedal was engaged with force however, the vehicle failed to increase speed. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer four times and on one occasion, the catalytic converter was replaced. the failure continued after the repair was performed. the spark plug coils were also being replaced by the dealer. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 13,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while operating the vehicle, the transmission downshifted hard and the vehicle jerked without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician made adjustments to the transmission sensor, but the failure recurred. in addition, while driving various speeds, the vehicle shook and vibrated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine cylinder coil failed and the cylinder battery pack needed to be replaced. eventually five of the six cylinder battery packs failed and were replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 20,000. updated 08/04/16*lj

Truck started to shake violently when accelerating. felt as if the wheels were loose or the u joint for the drive shaft was going bad. had to let off the gas. has been ongoing from the time i purchased the vehicle to present time. *tr

Vehicle has ford's selectshift transmission - when it is put in "m" mode and then gear 1 is selected, it will behave normally up to about 3000 rpm. above 3000 rpm, it will not slow down if the driver's foot is removed from the accelerator. if the slope of the road changes, it will continue to accelerate as though it was still going uphill, increasing speed without any driver input. it will return to normal behavior immediately as soon as the brake pedal is pressed, and the problem seems to only occur when the transmission is locked into 1st gear and in the m position (not d). *tt

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. the contact stated that while at a stop and upon acceleration, the vehicle jerked. in addition, the vehicle failed to properly shift gears. the vehicle was taken to 4 different dealers (dealer 1: bedford ford lincoln, inc., 6985 lincoln hwy, bedford, pa 15522, dealer 2: chapman ford sales, 5201 main st, east petersburg, pa 17520, dealer 3: world ford pensacola, 6397 pensacola blvd, pensacola, fl 32505, dealer 4: autonation ford fort lauderdale, fl 33304), who failed to provide a solution. the vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign numbers: 16v248000 (power train), 12v190000 (power train) and 11v582000 (power train). the manufacturer was notified of the failure and failed to provide a solution. the failure mileage was not available.

Following two heavily laden 18 wheelers during a light rain storm for two or more miles on a paved, two lane county road, it came clear for me to pass, i accelerated and all went well for just long enough for me to get even with the first one in front of me. my momentum carried me far enough to pull back in front of the first truck. by that time i was in serious trouble. my truck would barely run, it was vibrating violently and there was no acceleration to get me out of the way of the truck i had just passed. had he not braked hard for me there could have been a serious wreck. i've have had 5 other incidents with this vehicle. i've taken it up with fomoco, over a period the first year. working through the oklahoma bbb i was assured ford would correct the problem. fomoco sent a texas rep to my work location to put the most recent fix on the vehicle. following this fix, we continued into a dry spell, but as fate would would have it, i was in a heavy rain within the next 2 weeks and the problem reappeared. this time my wife was in the vehicle with me. she thought i had run over something because the action of the pickup was so violent. i've occasionally seen letters to the editor of motor trend's "truck trend". other people describing the exact thing i've experienced driving this same type vehicle (early model ecoboost v-6, those built prior to april 2011, i believe). i have a huge file from the time when i was trying very hard to get this corrected, dealerships, dates, times, correspondence, ford tech bulletins, but i refuse to waste my time with you unless you contact me acting as if something might seriously be done. ([xxx], or e-mail, [xxx]). i have enough to prove my vehicle has serious problems and fomoco admitted it. a transcript of my meeting with them through the oklahoma bbb. it's interesting what they had to say. When i started up my f-150 super crew cab with the ecoboost engine the service advanced track warning message came on. as i was driving with this error message on the dash i found that my turn signals would not stay on unless i hold the turn signal lever. later that day i went to take the truck into the dealer to show them the issue and the error message was gone and the turn signals were now functioning fine. since the error was no longer on the ford dealer could not do anything about the issue. the error stayed off for about 6 weeks and then came on again. now it has been coming on about every 3 or 4 days so i took it to the dealer and they determined that the issue is with the rack and pinion steering assembly and have replaced that. i just go the truck back and have not had time to confirm that the issue is fixed however my confidence level is not there as this is just one of many issues that i have seen on this truck that appear to be "computer" related since shutting off the truck (or as i put it rebooting) will correct the issue. *tt

I have a 2011 f150 with the 3.5 ecoboost. i have had numerous rough 3-4 upshifts since the truck was new. brought the truck to dealer twice and was told they could not duplicate the rough shift. i have also had the engine stumble on me twice will trying to pass. i have read others are having similar problems and am hoping ford will have a fix before someone gets killed in a wreck. *kb

I was driving along hwy 95 in georgia for several hours early one morning. i went to pass a semi and lost all power. the truck rpms jumped up while the transmission down shifted to 4th gear but the truck did not accelerate. i had to get back into my lane in an abrupt way causing traffic to re-act and allow me back in. this has happened almost a dozen times since then. ford has been issuing tsb for a fix but none of them work. this is only happening on the 3.5l eco-boost motor. they are now in their 3rd model year of this truck and are still having this problem, it is only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured. the timing of when this happens is un-predictable and often leaves no codes for the dealer to troubleshoot, so you get sent on your way with "could not replicate problem". ford has been claiming it is condensation in the inter-cooler, has issued computer updates numerous times, now they have released and upgraded inter-cooler, but the problems are still happening. *tr

Rainy day traveling on highway 19 near crockett , texas. tried to pass slow moving vehicle and engine stalled, check engine light came on and started missing. lost power and i was forced on the side of the road to avoid collision. took truck to dealer and he installed a small plate over inter cooler. several months later while passing on a humid day same thing occurred with same results. pulled to side of road because i could not get back into my lane due to other cars. took back to ford in october, 2013 and they installed another plate on bottom of intercooler and reprogrammed the computer. i have no faith in the repairs and will probably never try a pass in any humid or wet weather. *tr

Upon acceleration my truck shifted roughly sputtered and shut down, then the wrench showed up and i had to drift to side of road. this has happened 3 times. they have done a computer update 1st time, no luck, replaced a loose pin,no luck, replaced computer , no luck, replaced crank shaft sensor, no luck. this is a serious safety event. two times my truck stalled and shut off while merging onto an extremely busy highway. i have children that ride in my truck and i do not feel safe. i have opened a case with ford but all they want to do is keep fixing it. 44,000 truck , transmission stinks and i want a refund. someone is going to be seriously hurt or die due to this problem. *tr

Vehicle "shudders" or "bucks" slightly under light acceleration from 55 mph on up. for a $45,000 vehicle and no fix yet this is totally unacceptable. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle experienced independent shifting. the vehicle was taken to hagerstown ford in hagerstown, md where it was diagnosed that a software update was needed. the contact stated that the failure still recurred, but not as often. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not offer assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 59,125.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 55 mph, the accelerator failed to respond to acceleration attempts. additionally, an error code (p0036) and the check engine warning light illuminated. the contact also mentioned that the vehicle failed to operate normally when driving in rainy weather. the vehicle was taken to a dealer but was not able to be diagnosed. the technician was unable to determine the cause of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 3,500.

I bought this vehicle 12/2011 with 19,800 miles on it (it was manf. 12/2010, sold in orlando,fl in 01/2011 and traded in 10/2011 and was used as a rental truck) as a certified pre-owned (cpo) from maroone ford margate fl. there was a problem that when i was driving at a low speed <5mph the shift between 1-2 would sometimes be real hard (engine @ 3000rpm+) so this dealer checked and 'fixed' it with greasing the 2 part drive shaft. they told me that the wrong grease was used when the vehicle was built and needed to use a new grease. this happened again around the end of 2012(around 35k miles) and maroone ford miami 'fixed' it again by greasing the drive shaft. now it is happening again (8/2013) and this time they did not find anything wrong. it still happens and i am going to take my vehicle to a different dealership that is not maroone/autonation and see if they can 'fix' my problem. also i am reading that now i am having problems with the drivers side lights rapid flashing but not the pass side or when the hazards are on so i googled and it seems that there are problems with the bcm (body control module) and that i have found is behind the drivers side rear seats on a super crew. the dealership (maroone/autonation) had not done anything to check if my vehicle was on a recall as far as i know and now i have to go to another dealership and also bring this up (and i doubt they would even know about it either). i was told by maroone/autonation that if anything is found to let them know. what? i have to pay to let their techs know their job? ford should never have done a 2 piece driver shaft with a slip yoke or quit with things like the mechanical flasher relays even with pwm/canbus. this now becomes expensive to fix and not everyone is going to go out and buy a new vehicle. next time will be a toyota because they are driven in the deserts around the world, not fords. *tr

Upon trying to pass a truck, when i stepped on the gas for added power, the engine convulsed and shook the entire truck, lost power, engine light flickered... i pulled over immediately, called the ford dealership, they did a check through on star (type system). said they saw nothing?! started back up, seemed to be fine once again. this has happened now multiple times. always when stepping on the gas for added power, same scenario. this is the eco boost engine. while i love the power, it has failed me 5 times to date. same problem as the pe 13-018 report. *tr

This truck has the 3.5 liter v6 ecoboost engine. the truck is company owned by wl hall co. i was accelerating while attempting to pass another vehicle. the vehicle lost power then started to shake, shudder and jerk. the check engine light came on and the vehicle's engine started to run very roughly. this happened again at approximately 9,700 miles, 28,000 miles and 60,000 miles. ford has attempted to fix the issue three times. the truck will be going in for service for this issue a fourth time. due to improper performance, this issue almost caused an accident this last time. there have also been numerous incidents over the life of the vehicle where it did not shift properly and dropped power, but then the vehicle corrected itself. *tr

six months after i bought my truck i noticed a shuttering and hesitation while i was on the highway. the shuttering happens when i am cruising at 55-60 mph. more noticeably when the truck is climbing a slight incline on the road while lightly accelerating to maintain 60 mph. i had the dealer look at it 3 times in the last 2 years. the first time they reprogrammed the transmission and the computer. it did not solve the problem. brought it back the second time and i went for a ride with the technician and he noticed the shuttering. he said there was no engine light and no codes to find out what the problem is. finally the third time they said ford is aware of the problem and there engineers are trying to find a solution. i also had problems with my transmission. i was slowing down to come to a stop and the transmission downshifted so hard i thought i got rear ended by the vehicle behind me. *tr

The vehicle just doesn't accelerate without hesitating. *tr

Was told i would have to bring my truck to the dealer twice to have this recall done . one time for them to look at it and order parts . and the 2nd time for them to put the part on . they should have the parts in stock to fix recalls . my time is money . recall 11c21 ford . or nhtsa recall 11v-582. *tr

2011 ford f150. transmission slams 2nd to first at high force. has done this since new. reported problem to dealer multiple times. problem most frequent when slowing over speed bumps 2nd to 1st gear and can result in tires squealing.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving 70 mph, with the vehicle in sixth gear, it downshifted into fourth gear without warning. the vehicle was taken to a local dealer (lugoff ford, 979 us 1, lugoff, sc 29076) and was informed that the vehicle was driving as intended. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was not included in any recalls, but provided an extended warranty. the failure mileage was 76,400. *tt *tr

F150 ecoboost while going down a slight grade at about 50 mph in drive the transmission suddenly shifted down a couple of gears thereby causing the engine to rev up to over 3,500 rpm. after several seconds the transmission shifted back up one step at a time to the 6th gear. this has happened at least twice on different occasions. another anomaly has occurred several times. while slowing down slightly the transmission suddenly 'clunks' and it feels like something has run into the back of the truck. it's like a hard shift into a higher gear, however the transmission appears to be 6th and the speed is around 60 mph.. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. the contact stated that while shifting gears, the vehicle would violently lunge forward without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was unable to be replicated. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 14,000 and the current mileage was 40,000. *tr

2011 ford f-150 raptor supercab; <12,000mi, happening since new. at slower speeds, when transmission is allowed to shift up to at least 3rd gear and back down for a slow maneuver and/or stop, under normal re-acceleration conditions (normal- <2000rpm), as vehicle accelerates and shifts from first gear to second, it will seem to presume a 1/2 to 1 second "neutral" state, revving rpm's prior to engaging second gear with a very abrupt and pronounced "slam" shaking entire truck. symptoms can be slightly alleviated or avoided by letting off accelerator prior to shift, allowing to coast up to second gear through self power at idle rpm. not feasable for normal every day driving conditions. appears to be caused by lack or sudden loss of hydraulic pressure. *js

Shuddering/surging at highway speeds around 60mph in 6th gear. *tr

From the time i leased my 2011 f-150 there has been constant problems with the transmission jumping or surging, almost like something impacted the truck from the rear. loud bang and what feels like the transmission downshifting. i have only had my truck serviced at one ford dealership and they could never find anything wrong, finally in 2017, after paying out of pocket for attempts at repair, did the dealership realize that it was a recall issue. the recall repair was accomplished without resolution. i have brought up the issue since, but i also understand that any further efforts will potentially be at my own cost.

I have a ford 2011 fx4 ecoboost. whole truck started shuddering as i was getting onto the southwest freeway. check engine light was flashing and vehicle had loss of power. was able to coast and drive slow to the next exit where i pulled into a gas station and turned the engine off. i started the truck again and it seemed ok but the shuddering happened again on the way home and this time the check engine light stayed on. took it to the dealership where the code was pulled and they replaced the catalytic converter. same thing happened to me (shuddering and loss of power) again at 30k miles 3/4/2013 where this time they replaced a ignition coil and spark plug. and a third time at 34k miles 4/27/2013 and it is back in the shop today. when this happens it is very dangerous driving on the freeway when you cannot get the truck to drive without shuddering and jerking anytime you give it gas. something needs to be done before anyone gets hurt. the dealership so far has been fixing whatever the code states, however there is a underlying condition that is causing this to happen that needs to be addressed. *tr

I was driving at highway speed, and accelerated rapidly to get out of the way of a merging car. the truck shook violently and lost power. i pulled to the side of the road and restarted the vehicle. there was no "check engine light" or any other indicator of a problem during the incident, or after restarting the truck. when i took it to the dealer, they indicated that they found nothing wrong with it. i have driven the truck since then wondering if it would happen again. now i see that others are experiencing the same issue. kistler ford in toledo, ohio will have a record of this service appointment on 10-21-11, as i have a copy of the service document stating the above. although i have no way to prove it, the truck has also seemed to have less power since this incident. *tr

I was driving my 2011 ford f-150 4x4 with the 3.5 liter ecoboost engine on hwy 12 in buxton, n.c. and i went to pass a driver, accelerating from approximately 40 mph to 55 mph and the engine bogged and lost all power. i continued to hit the gas for about another second and the wheels then locked up and the truck had several violent jerking motions before coming to a complete stop. the engine would not turn back on for an hour. i had it towed to the ford dealership (under warranty) and they reset the computer. the truck seemed to run ok in the time since then, with the exception of the occasional shuddering during hard acceleration. now (december 2013) the truck will not accelerate at higher than 2,000 rpm when in 4th, 5th or 6th gear without shuddering and cutting power to the engine. the check engine light begins to flash during this and then turns off. ford is not willing to cover the repair costs and despite speaking to several customer service representatives, no one at ford has acknowledged this issue happening with any other vehicles. *tr

1. rear defrost and side mirror defrost fuse continually blows. started appx 3 yrs and at 42,000 miles 2. steering column locks up when turning left at a slow speed in cases such as pulling into or out of a driveway or parking spot or making a u turn. at high speeds on the interstate vehicle floats to the left and it is hard to straighten, almost as if there is no power assist.(i understand ford recalled some but not all 2011 f150's for a steering rack replacement (started around 4 yrs/ 55,000 miles 3. transmission takes about 10 seconds to engage into reverse upon starting in the morning or on cold days when vehicle has been parked for mare then say 5 hours started around 6 months/ 6,000 miles.

I have been having problems with engine noise ranging from a deep howling to a sound like a steel chain being drug over an aluminum ladder. i have had problems with the sync, memory seats and steering wheel, auto start, and an ongoing problem with hesitation or miss firing in the engine that cause the truck to loose power on acceleration and go into limp mode. i have had some really close calls getting onto the highway where i was almost hit from behind when the truck lost power. i have had the truck in the shop 13 times and getting ready to go back for the 14th time. i have tried the bbb and the lemon law program which i was denied by a third party arbitrator. i was expecting that because a bbb employee said 93% of all people that file a lemon law claim in missouri get denied. i have an extended warranty with 50,000 miles left on it and the ford engineer in charge of repairs says he refuses to do anything about the engine noise anymore because of the past failed repairs. this is an v6 ecoboost . i don't know what to do next. *tr

Tl* the contact owned a 2011 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate. the failure recurred intermittently at different speeds. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnosis three different times. the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. additionally, the contact stated that the fuel gauge would not display accurate fuel readings. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. the fuel sensor was replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 4,000. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f150. the contact noticed transmission fluid leaking from the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed the leak from the bell housing. the manufacturer was aware of the failure. no repairs were performed. the current and failure mileages were 1,072. the vin was unavailable.

Truck lost all fluid from transmission. ford replace seal in transmission after sitting at dealer for nearly 3 weeks. since that time, i have made multiple complaints to local dealer about engine stumble on hard acceleration. dealer replaced air deflector per ford service bulletin. truck still stumbles on hard acceleration. (06/01/2013) current mileage 40,900. *tr

Under hard acceleration into traffic or when passing, vehicle will suddenly lose power and go into a "limp mode." this condition is thought to occur because of engine misfire and several factors have been identified that can cause this in the ecoboost 3.5l v6. the dealer has replaced ignition coils with no success in correcting this issue. my service manager shared with me that ford engineering is well aware of the issue and has yet to come up with a solution to correct it. in the meantime, my family is placed at risk of an accident because there is no way to predict when the engine will suddenly lose power when you need it most for passing or merging situations. this becomes even worse when pulling a trailer. nhtsa should demand that ford immediately recall and repair these vehicles, or replace them until an appropriate solution is found to remedy the misfire condition and resultant lost of power. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle would not accelerate from a stop when the accelerator pedal was depressed. the vehicle was moved over to the side of the roadway, where the contact noticed that transmission fluid was leaking onto the ground. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where they were in the process of diagnosing the failure. the failure and current mileages were 1,200. updated 09/21/11*lj updated 10/03/11

Transmission slams between gears and also does it while coming to a rolling stop. at times if feels like if you got hit from behind causing you to slam your head and body on the seat. it will do it at slow speeds and high speeds, but more noticeable while driving in and out of traffic slower speeds. at times it also feels like there is slippage when shifting gears. *tr

Transmission fluid pours out of overflow when under load (pulling a trailer). this fluid dumps on exhaust system and starts a fire. this accrued at 2,500 miles on june 25, 2011. truck is still at dealer, no resolution. *tr

Multiple incidents of hesitation in first and second gear shifts causing stalling in the middle of intersections. no accidents occurred. i was told by ford " there is a factory defect in the manufacture of the torque converter seal."

I was driving and i had loss of power started misfiring shifting funny and i was almost killed by a large truck something needs to be done.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. the contact stated the vehicle began to vibrate while driving 35 mph. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer who stated the driveshaft was not angled properly. the contact was concerned since the failure was a safety issue. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 1,647 and the current mileage was 2,000.

The trek has had the problem of the drivetrain locking up in a tight turn causing the trk to slide instead of turning a corner. really dangerous in winter driving or wet conditions. also the rear drivetrain chatters when starting out from a stop which causes loss of traction in wet or snowy icy conditions. i could go on and on but this is a start. have had the truck in at least six times with no results and lundgren motors in eveleth,mn told me ford wasn't going to fix it and i was welcome to take it to another dealer. this happens when vehicle is in 4x4 drive on streets in dirt grass snow blacktop cement.

Transmission slams between gears and the drive train "acts" like it is sticking in four wheel drive when at slow speeds going around corners and starting out when you turn the steering wheel. it has become progressively worse and i am concerned that it will break or even worse when out of warranty then break. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 30 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle downshifted erratically causing for the vehicle to lunge forward. the contact drove the vehicle to the dealer and the diagnosis was that the downshifting was a normal function of the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact stated that the vehicle experienced the same failure since it was purchased in 2011. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that he vin was not included in a manufacturers recall related to the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 12,500.
