Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that there was an intermittent loss of power steering ability that caused the steering wheel to become difficult to turn in either direction. the dealer (ted britt ford, 11165 fairfax blvd, fairfax, va 22030, (703) 591-8484 or 1-(866) 224-7068) indicated that the vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) for the 2008-2011 models and would need to be diagnosed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy other than having the dealer repair the vehicle. the manufacturer issued one tsb for the steering concerning this year, make, and model vehicle. the vin and failure mileage were not available. *tt *tr

Vehicle loses power steering without notice; vehicle was stationary, i started it and received an error message that power steering failed. this happened twice. i read several related reports on this website and online and also saw there was a recall for this issue in previous year models. dealership did not warn me.

When i turned on the car to get back home from the grocery store the screen showed "steering wheel at fault." the steering wheel was very hard to turn and i had to get home so i managed to get the car to the house. the next morning, the same thing happened again and because of this problem i could not take my car to a trip where i had already planned, now i can't drive it to work either, it has been two days and the same problem remains.

While driving my 2013 ford escape (1.6l engine) on an interstate, i was traveling at 80mph on cruise control. suddenly the cruise control was deactivated and i felt a jolt. i then observed a message on the dash which read engine overheating, stop safely. i then observed the engine light to illuminate, the coolant needle go to the red hot level, and i began to loose acceleration. the vehicle was not overheating and was later confirmed at a nearby car repair. once stopped and attempt to restart, loss of steering had begun. mileage during incident was 80,200. after taking it to ford regarding newer recall msgs, they advised the steering rack was not communicating with their diagnostic and must be the reason for the repair. repair has not been completed after reading incidents and complaints regarding similar issues/concerns. i believe this to be another recall issue.

While arriving home (almost entering my garage), suddenly i have this message on screen 'steering assist fault service required' and it is almost impossible to steer the vehicle. searching on the internet i've found a lot of people complaining about the same problem and how is possible that there is no recall for that.

I was driving to work last friday and i suddenly heard the alert signal and dashboard light and then i couldn't turn the steering wheel. the error message on the dash said "steering assist fault service required". i was able to turn the wheel enough to get it off the road. luckily i was only going about 35 mph on the highway. the power steering had failed as i was driving down the highway. there were many other cars around me, but luckily they avoided me. i have one repair quote for $2000 to repair the entire power steering rack and pinion system, of which we cannot pay. we took it to 2 other mechanics who reported that they were unable to fix it because it was an electric system and had to be reprogrammed by the dealership service dept. from my research, this is the same issue ford had with their 2008-2011 ford explorers.

I started up the car and started backing out of a parking space. could not turn the steering wheel and an error message popped up on the dashboard "steering assist fault service required. on a 2013 ford escape with 90k on it. i was able to to get it towed to a garage and they are replacing my steering column for $1800. my 1967 mustang with no power steering was easier to turn than this car. luckily we were in a safe spot.

When driving the steering wheel locked up making it hard to control i thought it needed power steering fluid then i found out thatit is electrical but the dealeris acting as if it is not important i could have been killed i was in traffic and it locked to the right i had to slam on breaks before i hit someoneelsethis sold be on recall thedealer is not cooperating at all can you please help

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while the vehicle was stationary and while driving various speeds, the power steering failed. in addition, the "power steering assist fault" warning message was displayed. el cajon ford (1595 east main street, el cajon, california 92021) was made aware of the failure and stated that there were no recalls or warranty coverage on the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 76,000.

The steering assist went out when i was turning into a parking space. i could not physically turn the wheel to move the vehicle. had to have it towed to dealership. if this went out while i was driving at higher speed it would have resulted in a horrible accident.

I drove the vehicle to a movie theater. parked the car and when i returned to the car. a warning light stated that there was a steering problem. i put the car in motion and it was nearly impossible to steer. i was able to get the vehicle to my home, approx. 3 miles, called aaa and had it towed to the ford garage. my extended warranty covered most of the repair costs. my main concern is that if my wife or i had been traveling the roads at a normal speed, neither of us, who are in our 80's could have brought the car to a safe stop. there was no pre-warning of a problem with the steering and the ford manual dosen't mention any potential problems.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while parked, the steering failed and could not be turned. also, the power assist indicator illuminated. the vehicle was towed to a local dealer (christian brothers ford, 1375 highway 2 truck byp, crookston, mn 56716) where it was diagnosed that the steering wheel needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 45,222.

My steering froze up on my vehicle it will not turn right or left. and my shots or my struts have worn out too soon i think also on this vehicle but i need this suspension checked out in the steering checked out on this vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving 45 mph, the power steering failed and the steering wheel was extremely difficult to turn. unknown warning indicators illuminated prior to the failure. the vehicle was towed to the dealer (fairlane ford, 14585 michigan ave, dearborn, mi 48126 (855) 285-3673), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 80,860.

While driving the vehicle at low speed (thank god) i attempted to turn and the steering hung up. i could feel the floor board under my feet move as i tried to turn the wheel. i forced it to turn and then stopping, i looked under the car only to find a large piece or the whole piece of the heat shield had come loose and was laying on top of the exhaust system and the steering. i pulled it loose, some was torn up, and pushed the rest out of the way of the steering. drove home. was informed it was not under warranty. car has 63,000 miles on it. never driven hard.

I drove my 2013 escape se the evening of 11-27-2017 and needed to avoid a collision by braking and doing a very quick, sharp turn to the right. no problem with function after that, finished my errand and returned home, parked car in garage as usual. next afternoon when i started the car there was no power steering, possibly no manual steering at all. wheel would not move in any gear, in any direction, any more than when car is turned off. only advice from local dealer is to have it towed in and they will look at it. this will not be possible with no money available for months. this is a widely commented problem on this vehicle. a very similar, if not exact, recall was done on 2011 and older years of this same vehicle. since this is a high safety issue, why hasn't a recall been done on the 2013? my fail happened overnight, in the garage, car parked and turned off, but many say it has happened while car is in motion. please tell me what i can do to help this safety issue become a recall? i am willing to help, but don't know how. what can i do to help? my grandkids could have been in the car during a while-in-motion fail, so glad it was parked.

Our 2013 ford escape at 82,500 miles has to have the power steering control module replaced at a cost of $1,900. several times when turning on the car and backing up, the warning light "steering assist fault-service required" came on. turn car off and back on then light goes off however a major safety issue to us and other drivers if loss of power steering goes out while driving. requesting recall on the 2013 models be recalled similar to earlier escape model recalls with same safety issues (nhtsa campaign #-14v284000 & ford recall # 14s05)

Car continued to shut off while driving locking up steering, brakes, etc. car was brought to tunkhannock ford on 10/24 and remained there until 5 p.m. on 10/27. told was doing it for them. i'm informed by a tunkhannock ford employee, the car was only taken out off lot & test 1 time. on 10/28, my wife, 4 & 8 yr. old are driving & the car stopped 7 times total on route 6 in tunkhannock where a truck driver got out and assisted my wife as she was stuck in the middle of the highway with flashers on. after arguing with the service writer, sales manager for compromising the safety of my wife and daughters - i was still denied a loaner vehicle where we paid enterprise for a rental in order to get to work. i requested a loaner from their other tunkhannock dealership and was still denied and all i was told by matt kerr, sales manager is "i understand your concern, i have young children also but it's out of my hands." effective today 11/3/17, they still have our spare key & have yet to call to check on the status of the appointment that i did not go to scheduled for 10/30/17. i called montrose motors owned by the same previous owner of gateway ford where this car was purchased and they got it in immediately - provided a loaner vehicle hassle free and said many loyal customers have left tunkhannock ford for their crudeness with service by writing up work orders for loyal customers bringing their vehicles in for air - we don't care how long they needed to assess the car - our formal complaint which we are pursuing is tunhannock ford has jeporadized the safety and well-being of my family - especially my 2 daughters by denying me a loaner vehicle

Electric power steering failure while making a right turn at a city intersection that nearly resulted in a head on collision. failure alert appeared on the dash so i had it towed home. when starting it up to pull into the garage, the power steering suddenly returned. ford issued a recall for the exact same issue for 2013 explorers (#14s05), but will not cover the escape.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while the vehicle was operated on the highway, the steering column seized. in addition, the liftgate opened independently. the vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road and driven to the contact's residence. the steering assist fault warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to autonation ford miami (16800 nw 57th ave, hialeah, fl) where it was diagnosed that the electric power steering and rack and pinion were defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: cas 13322662. no further assistance was offered. the manufacturer referred the contact to nhtsa due to them stating that the federal agency was responsible for adding recalls. the failure mileage was approximatley 63,606.

Can't steer car at all. was moving on interstate steering became hard to move ,mechanic says u3000. this problem is all over google. but ford says there no recall. could have kill me. thank you [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

The power steering failed completely, i could hardly turn the wheel. had to park and abandon the car. the vehicle was in motion, turning, in a parking lot.

Power steering. failure on start up twice in two months and once while driving. had to pull over and restart car and then it worked again. this is a dangerous situation. had scheduled to take in while they also recall my door latch. sounds like many ford owners have the same issue. after spending $2500 on a fiat repair for car less than 45k miles and now this car with less than 60k, i am never buying american cars again. garbage.

My car has ran a 100% since the day i bought it. i went to go move my car after i cut my grass and instantly my power steering sensor went off as soon as i started my car stating that it required service due to it not working. just like that. no earlier warnings, no malfunctions prior to this incident, nothing. i am a mother of 4 daughters and thankfully i was just trying to reposition my vehicle in my yard vs. driving down the road or else it could have caused severe bodily harm to us or even worse, it could have caused a major accident that could have resulted in death. i called the ford dealership and they stated even with so many complaints on this particular model, make, and year having this exact problem, this is not a recall yet. i researched it myself and found out that the 2013 ford fusion also has this problem, but there is currently an active recall for the fusion, but not the escape. i am confused on this. are they waiting on a death toll to rise due to ford's malfunctioning part and a lawsuit before they decide that this is a real serious issue or is it because of the lack of concern for fords customers and families they had when they decided to use this poorly planned electrical design that is continuously malfunctioning? or maybe its because they know that this is a big issue and charging customers over $1700.00 to fix this poorly planned product that is going to cost someone their lives was going to make their service department revenue sky rise with this power steering problem being high in demand. i don't understand why one model of ford with the same year is on recall for this, but the other model with the exact same set up and year is not. i am a single mother of 4 daughters that is still paying on this $19,000.00 vehicle that is now parked in my yard because it is too expensive to fix. thanks ford!!!

Parked the vehicle one evening. an hour later, started it up, no epas. no warning, just quit. drives like a log truck. there is a recall for 2008-2011 models for this problem. hoping this gets expanded to cover 2013. cost ~$1500.

While driving ford 2013 escape, loss complete power steering control, thankfully at a low speed. car did become completely undriveable. no noise or warnings lights came on until after power steering was loss. luckily was able to stop and restart car but did not resolve situation. contacted ford company of problem and was not able to resolve the issue. ford refused to take responsibility or cover cost of their own failed product. cost of repair quoted at $1500.00 on a car with only 47,000 miles.

Had to rebuild transmission and lost power steering . the cruise control does not work also

Steering assist fault error occurred while vehicle was in motion. complete loss of electronic power steering. pulled the car over, restarted the vehicle, problem did not return. i took the vehicle to the dealership as a precaution and they reproduced the issue. they tell me that something called electronic steering gear, part no. cv6z3504age must be replaced. the car is not yet 4 years old.

Steering wheel locks and cannot steer the vehicle. tod date, this has happened while stationary. i pray it does not happen while moving. diagnosed as steering rack issue at a cost of $1,000 plus labor.

Power steering stops working 5 times in the last 2 months. ford says no recall. our concern is a safety issue that could cause an accident. so far this has happened in a stationary position. worried it will happen when driving.

Power steering failure, only 42000 miles

I started my car and as i put the 2013 ford escape in reverse with my foot on the brake to back out of my driveway, the steering wheel felt impossible to move. knowing this vehicle has had so many dangerous issues associated with recalls in the past, i decided not to drive it any further. as it was still safely in my driveway, i placed it in park, shut it off, and opted to use another vehicle. the escape sat there undisturbed for two days. then, my husband tried to use it and upon starting he noticed a warning in the display that stated steering assist fault. he opted not to use the vehicle either as he also noticed that it seemed as if there was no power steering. i have a call into a local dealer to take it in for service, but see no logical reason for this vehicle to have a problem with steering. it is only three years old and has 30k miles. i only use the vehicle to run errands in town and have kept up with routine maintenance.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving various speeds, the vehicle was extremely difficult to steer. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 6,500.

As i was exiting my garage, the power steering failed, making it virtually impossible to turn the steering wheel. fortunately, this happened before i was on the road. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and diagnosed as an internal failure of the power steering control module. dealer replaced steering gear. not covered under new car warranty or any previous ford recall.

On september 21, 2016 around 6:30pm, i started the car and noticed there was no power to the steering wheel. normally the steering would comeback after about a minute but not at that time. i was running late and dropped my son to his activity class about 10 miles away my home in the city area. the power steering did not come back at any time during the trip there and back. i could only drive safely at about 10 miles per hour, and when i needed to turn, i had to slow to about 2 miles per hour in order to make the turn safely. this was a major safety issue so when i got home, i arranged an appointment for the next day to have the dealer look at the failed power steering. the dealer determined that there was bad circuit board in the electronic power steering. it seems this has been an issue with several other years with the escape up to 2012. my escape is a 2013 model and should also be a recall item. i have had the car for 3 years, and it was only 65,000 miles at the time. it's truly upsetting that it is giving me this type of unsafe issue and endangering the lives of my family and others who is driving on the road. *tr

Turned on vehicle and power steering fault message came on. had no steering assistance and turning wheel extremely difficult. turned car on/off and it went away. it did it again a few days later but while driving residential at 25 mph in a neighborhood. stopped in the middle of the road and turned off/on vehicle, fault went away and steering returned. took to ford for diagnostics and repair. was told no faults store in the power steering module therefore warranty will not pay for diagnostics and repair. was told if it happens again, drive vehicle to dealer and do not turn off. i told the dealer this is a safety concern and they should never recommend to drive a vehicle with no power steering assistance. the dealer refused to do any further diagnostics and could not recommend safe future steps. refusing to pay for warranty on a system with no faults that does not store fault codes is unreasonable. the car is unsafe for my wife to operate yet they took no steps to correct concern. the module programming was updated but advisor described the update and it does not address my issue.

I just bought this car off the lot on saturday 9/17/2016. on tuesday evening of the 20th my family and i went to dinner car ran fine no warning signals. parked the car went in to eat and came out started the car and went to drive and couldn't steer i then noticed the message behind the steering wheel that read steering assist fault service needed. i then shut the car off and tried turning it back on still same message. we literally drove home with no steering which is beyond dangerous. it is in the shop right now trying to figure out what is wrong with it. at this point i am scared to even drive it again.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving 35 mph, the power steering failed without warning. it was diagnosed that the eps gear assembly had an internal failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the vin was invalid. the failure mileage was 51,000.

2013 ford escape lost power steering twice on 9/12/16 with the "steering assist fault" message in the middle of driving. 1st time happened 2 minutes after start while turning out of the driveway. 2nd one happened 10 minutes after start while driving. if this happens during driving it is extremely dangerous!! you lose control of the vehicle. my wife would have crashed for sure. they say it has a manual reversion to drive without power steering but it is not the same. i have driven cars without power steering and this is way harder. the rack and pinion had problems and was replaced on 8/5/15 at 23972 miles. it has gone out again on 9/12/16 at 38000 miles. now ford is saying it is not covered under warranty even though it was replaced under warranty once and has not gone out again in 1 year! this is clearly a faulty system to have gone out twice in less than 3 years and 38000 miles. this is a safety issue for sure and i have no doubt will lead to a recall or lawsuit.
