We have classified the 275 complaints from 2009 Ford Escape about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.
I was driving approx 60 mph when my car jumped down to approx 25 mph and wrench light came on. i had to coast to side of road to get off highway. when i shut the car off and restarted it i was able to drive to saftey but then it happened again and car had to be towed to the ford dealer for them to charge me 585.00 and replace the throttle body. i have read this has happened to many people and this really should be a recall.
Was accelerating when the vehicle seemed to shut off. vehicle restarted and about a month later did it again pulling away from an intersection. dealer confirmed it was a faulty throttle body and charged 100 dollars to fix. *tr
While driving the 2009 ford escape down highway, experienced a brief lurch then complete and immediate loss of throttle control. engine speed decreased to approx. 1000 rpm making it impossible to continue driving and forcing an emergency stop on shoulder. while stopped on shoulder, engine was completely unresponsive to throttle, and remained roughly idling at 1k rpms. shut off engine, and restarted the vehicle. after restarting, throttle control appeared to be working normally. there were no obvious symptoms immediately prior to the failure: engine appeared to be running fine, and throttle control was working normally until the incident. the unexpected loss of throttle control and corresponding decrease in vehicle speed was disorienting, and could have easily resulted in an unsafe situation or accident if surrounding traffic were heavier or driver had panicked. vehicle was diagnosed by dealer as having a "failing throttle body". codes retrieved were p2111 and p2135, and pinpoint tests showed that "the throttle actuator control motor is failing". throttle body assembly was replaced. *tt
I was driving on the highway on 8/22 going to work going approximately 65 mph when the car engine just died. the radio and lights still worked but the engine just stopped. i put my blinker on and the car went slowly forward (still in momentum from going 65 mph--snails pace now) went from the travel lane to the right lane to the emergency lane --people honking at me and fear that i may cause a serious accident or get rear ended. very scary in morning rush hour traffic. i was able to get a tow truck to bring it to the dealership (figuring it may be covered by warranty). the dealership said nothing was wrong with it--"no codes showed up". on monday 8/26 i went to pick up the escape and literally pulled out of the dealership and about 2 miles away from the dealership, the same thing happened--the engine just had no power--died again, i put my gas pedal foot all the way down to the floor and no power. i pulled over. stopped. i was able to re-start the escape and turn around. i pulled into the dealership and there the escape died again. next day, the service manager called me and said it was the throttle body---not covered by warranty. "codes finally came up". i charged my credit card and had it fixed. i have had it home for one day now and am keeping my fingers crossed no further issues. *tt
Running down hwy at and car stalled . made it to side of road. sat there 10 min started again and made it home. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that while traveling approximately 30 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration power. the vehicle was merged to the shoulder where it was shut down and restarted. the vehicle resumed normal function but the failure recurred shortly after. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 55,000.
Since i purchased my 2009 ford escape in november 2011, my car would occasionally just as i began to move after a stop sign or make a turn after stopping. about a year ago, my car had stalled in the middle of a street with the electricity out. this august, the car completely stalled (the electricity was still on) an onramp to interstate 81. i was able to restart it and attempt to go home, but when i turned left after stopping at a light, the car stalled again. the local ford dealership said," verified concern, pulled code p2112 throttle body stuck closed, performed all of the pinpoint tests and the throttle body failed the functionality test, removed air tube and found the throttle is very slow to respond to commands." *tr
1st time driving down street wrench light came on, truck lost power. had truck towed through research new it was throttle body. two days later truck started, while driving on highway wrench light came on lost power again .truck stopped working in a construction zone. took truck directly to ford service. they were closed. they looked at truck next day. i had a complete tune up at a different repair shop at 100,000.00. had all fluids changed and spark plugs. ford service called, and told me it needed all that done, that it was not throttle body. after i told them i already had all that done, they stuttered and said they would call me back. they called back said it probably was throttle body and gave me a large estimate. i chose to pick up truck. paid $128.00. received letter you wrote about from ford regarding throttle body. called ford. they said they will only replace it if the code shows up when i bring it in, if it doesn't i will have to pay out of pocket. i am upset because i already brought it in with that exact problem. please advise what i should do now. thank you. *tr
Driving down the highway at 60mph when car slowed down to 10-15mph. had to place my emergency lights on in order not to get hit by passing vehicles and move to the emergency lane. i had to turn off the car in order for the accelerator to work again. after the first incident the vehicle kept on stalling. took the vehicle to the dealer and it turns out its the throttle body thats malfuctioning. the warranty i purchased does not cover this type of part, i dont even have a year with this vehicle. in doing my research i find out that there has been an investigation on this vehicle on foresaid problem around the time i purchased the vehicle. the investigation is still opened. investigation number pe13-003. the ford dealership is charging me close to $700 in order to get this part fixed. they did not provide this information to me i had to look it up myself. they also did not provide me with a renter car i had to purchase one on my own. its just unfair. *tr
Sunday august 18, 2013 9:30 pm driving back from store on highway 17 wrench showed up on dash and car slowed down and came to a complete stop. i pushed the gas but nothing happened. traffic was behind me a i feared getting hit. i was able to get to the side of the road to avoid an accident. turned car off and waited for a few seconds. turned key in ignition and car started and ran just fine. 8/19/13, driving daughter to school on highway 80 vehicle did the same thing but sputtered twice. needless to say sheer pandemonium! daughter screaming and crying because highway 80 is very congested and the speed is 55 to 60 mph. managed to get to side of highway, repeated what i did the night before and car started just fine, was able to get daughter to school and myself to work. 8/20/13, it happened again. on highway 80, got to side of road and started car up again. got daughter to school and on the way to work car stopped again. started car again and got to work -- called ford and took car to shop. had to start car gain as it slowed down and would only go no more than 5 mph. car is at shop right now. waiting for ford to call me. car is under warranty as i purchased the extended warranty package. *tr
Vehicle stalled while driving down highway at 60mph. happened again a week later- three times in same trip. had to pull off side of road, put in park and turn off engine and restart each time. trouble code p2111 indicated defective throttle body. internet search showed this issue is under investigation. ordered new part from dealership and dealer informed me it is on backorder for an undetermined amount of time due to high volume of replacements. in the meantime i cannot drive my vehicle. *tt
I was driving my 2009 ford escape limited at 60 to 55 mph when there was a lurch and sudden loss of power. i then pulled of the highway and turned off the vehicle and did an inspection to troubleshoot the problem. after 15 minutes the vehicle started back up and i drove it to our local autoparts store to get the trouble code. the code came back as p2112 : throttle actuator control system closed; explanation ecm has detected the throttle plate is at a lower angle than commanded probable cause binding throttle stuck closed. *tr
While driving the engine lost power. i was able to pull over and restarted the engine. i took it to the ford dealership today and had to have the throttle body replaced. from what i have read this is a common occurrence so why hasn't ford done anything about it? *tr
Vehicle stuck in the intersection waiting for a red light. engine light kicked on. error code p2111, throttle stuck. would been in an accident if on highway. ford needs to address this issue. *tr
While entering a main highway from an exit, during acceleration the vehicle began "spluttering" and stalled. car was turned off and restarted successfully. again, leaving a parking lot onto a main highway pulling out of median begin "spluttering" and stalled. car was turned off and restarted successfully. again, stopped at a red light, when light turned green and began accelerating, car stalled in the middle of the intersection. car was restarted and took to local dealer for inspection. found to need a new throttle body. upon research, found that this has been a frequent complaint. this has the potential to result in fatalities. *tr
While driving home from an outing, at 55 mph, the throttle body quit, causing a loss of speed. the car would not accelerate. we had to have the car towed home. we have been waiting for an un-necessary length of time for the repair, due to the part being on back order....updated 11-06-13 *bf
I was driving home from work on route 33 (buffalo, ny highway) that has a lot of ongoing construction. i was in the middle lane of a 3 lane highway when i heard a pop and noticed my speed dropping from 60 to 20 within a matter of 20 to 30 seconds. i immediately turned my flashers on and tried to get over to the shoulder. unfortunately, merging traffic was approaching from an on ramp with one of the vehicles being an ambulance with lights and sirens on. the ambulance had to swerve in order to miss striking my suv. i had a hard time trying to reach the shoulder of the road due to no throttle and construction signs and sand bags surrounding the shoulder. even the towing company had a hard time trying to reach my vehicle and had to move construction signs, sand bags and debris in order to tow my suv, i had absolutely no warning signs that this was going to happen. this was a dangerous and terrifying experience. of course, my warranty expired and the repair was not covered by the ford dealer. so along with being placed in a dangerous and horrific situation, i am also out $650, this matter needs to be addressed immediately before someone gets seriously hurt. *tr
My 2009 ford escape xlt (this is my third escape, and the only one that has ever caused me any problem) has never accelerated as it should, from the day i drove it new off of the lot. it has always hesitated, lurched, lunged, jerked; most frequently when accelerating from a full stop or a rolling stop. it had never "limped" until at approximately 50k miles, when the throttle body failed twice while traveling at approx. 50mph (wrench symbol lit up). after having the throttle body replaced by my dealer in late june-early july 2013, the lunging, jerking, hesitating continued. on 8/8/13, when accelerating from a rolling stop, the vehicle died while attempting a "michigan left" onto a 4-lane highway (this time the battery light and service engine lights came on). if the traffic signal for oncoming traffic had not been green, i was at risk of being struck by several vehicles traveling at rates of speed up to 70mph. i was able to let the vehicle roll back into the turn lane; turned it off and then back on; but acceleration is still not operating as it should. the rpms are all over the place. i feel as though i am driving a "death trap". this is a very urgent issue and must be addressed and repaired by ford swiftly and at no cost to the consumer. i had to pay almost $600 to have the throttle body replaced (including a rental vehicle). this is unacceptable and extremely dangerous. if this problem is not satisfactorily repaired at no cost to me when i attempt to take it to my dealer again (i'm considering having it towed because i'm so afraid to drive it), i will never purchase another ford vehicle. *tr
Identified as throttle bottle malfunction. driving in cruise control at 70mph and car stalls out. wrench symbol comes up and car looses all acceleration. almost had an accident and had to safely get on the curb. car continues to rev. turn car off and then restart and everything is fine. also took video of incident. this had occurred multiple times. had ford install new throttle body for $400 on 8/10/13. no more issues and ford verbally acknowledged that this was the issue. own two 2009 escapes and both have had the same issue and both have replaced throttle body. called ford consumer service and they stated they could not do anything to help the situation. *tr
Same as others, the engine keeps running but will not go do the throttle body actuator not opening. *tr
This has been happening for about 6 weeks. i have taken it into the dealership 4 times. i told them it suddenly stutters and slows down and it won't respond to gas pedal. i have to stop, turn off, and restart. it is intermittent and always in traffic it seems. i have almost been rear ended several times. it also revved up to 10mph while sitting in park without foot on gas pedal. we told them it was the throttle, but the computer did not pick up the code. i feel it is very dangerous and i refuse to drive it unless the throttle is fixed. this needs to be a serious recall! i hear they cannot get throttle parts. i will never buy a ford again if this is not taken care of and i have been loyal for 30 years. *tr
As i was driving, the accelerator pedal ceased responding because power to the accelerator was lost. the car coasted to a stop on a busy highway. i was able to turn off the ignition and restart and drive in low gear a short distance. but after about 300 yards, low gear ceased to work as there was no longer any power to the accelerator. i was able to put the car in reverse and back off the road. i consider it fortunate that traffic was relatively light and i was not hit by another vehicle. i had my vehicle towed to a lincoln mercury dealer, who advised the diagnostic computer code (p2111) indicated the electronic throttle body was "bad", and there was nothing to do but replace it. they could not tell me any details as to what had caused it to go "bad", and advised they were not able to do any investigation as to what caused the malfunction. all they could do was send the old throttle body back (presumably to ford), and install a new electronic throttle body for an installed cost of $720.24. i complained directly to ford in dearborn, mi (global director, automotive safety office) by u.s. mail, and received a voicemail on 9/5/13 from [xxx] at ford executive offices ([xxx]). i returned the call and she requested i send a copy of my invoice for the throttle body installation ([xxx]). a few days later (9/9/13 i believe) she called and the bottom line was all ford would offer was a partial reimbursement of $240, which i have not yet received. she admitted no wrong (except perhaps by inference of offering a partial reimbursement) and advised ford could not guarantee that i would not experience another throttle body malfunction. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
While driving the wrench light and check engine light came on and the vehicle went into limp home mode and would not go faster than a couple of miles an hour. the engine was surging during this time. i could turn the vehicle off and restart it but it would immediately do the same thing again. the codes that were read from the vehicle were p2111 and p2112 and said the throttle stuck open and throttle stuck closed. *tr
Driving on local highway and engine entered "safe mode" (wrench light came on, was unable to accelerate). previously vehicle would shudder and near stall but run fine when restarted. *tr
While driving on the freeway the engine dropped to idle and throttle became no responsive. had to perform evasive maneuvers without power to safely pull over. i was lucky that i was not hit. after calling the dealer service department they informed me that it would likely need to have the throttle body replaced at over $600. this issue has become worse in only a few days and occurs at a variety of speeds. research on the web leads me to believe that this is a common issue and i am concerned for safety of drivers with all this type of vehicle. *tr
7/30/2013 started up after stopping at an intersection. about half a block later, i stepped on the accelerator and nothing happened. then it sputtered, the wrench light came on and the car would not move. i coasted to the side of the road, turned on hazard lights and turned it off. it started right up after a few seconds and proceeded normally. about a month later, the same thing happened driving home at night. after stopping at a stop sign, i accelerated and the car lost power, the wrench lit up and i coasted over to the side again. again, it started right up. a week later, it did the same thing in heavy traffic. i put on the hazard lights and coasted to the edge of the road. it started up, but did the same thing after a few yards. i made it very slowly into a parking lot and it stayed there until that evening. when i tried it later, it died a couple of times and i drove it home on the back streets late at night when there was no traffic. after researching the problem on line, i saw what others had done and had the throttle body replaced. that was 6 days ago. so far, so good. however, my confidence is gone and i won't be driving it in freeway traffic anytime soon. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 70 mph, the engine stalled with the illumination of the engine warning indicator. the vehicle was restarted normally however, the failure recurred six times. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the throttle body and motor assembly were replaced. the manufacturer was not notified of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 62,000.

I was driving along when the car feels as though it's about to stall. i immediately slow down to pull over, turn the car off, let it sit for a moment then start it back up. the problem has continued to happen until i took it into a garage to find out i need a new throttle body. *tr
I was driving on a two lane rt, speed limit 55mph at 9pm, no lighting along rt, accelerating to keep up speed going up a hill, the car started to slow down. pulling over to my right (off the road ) putting on my flashers, was now at a complete stop was hit in rear left doing damage to my car and the car that hit me.the car that hit me left the seen of the accident. no warning this was going to happen.towed car to a ford dealer and had fixed, internal throttle body failure, lucky to be alive. *tr
Driving vehicle approx. 50 mph on a clear day, approx 105 degrees in las vegas nv, the rpm's suddenly went "limp" around 900 even though the gas peddle was fully depressed. appearance of a wrench light and check engine light noted. hazard lights were engaged and the vehicle was successfully pulled to the side of the road, turned off, and restarted. ran fine like nothing happened for about a mile and a half. same issue. repeat troubleshooting. incident continued to happen for 4 more days consistently. taken into ford dealership for diagnostic and repair. mechanic contacted me after diagnostic and informed that the code for the throttle body was in error. replaced the faulty part( i kept it at my request due to the possible investigation into the matter) and the vehicle now runs fine. thank goodness the issue did not occur in a busy intersection where an accident could have potentially endangered anyone. *tr
Driving about 55-60 mph down the highway my gas pedal stopped responding and my truck rapidly slowed down. i was able to maneuver to the shoulder & restart. this happened 4 times in the 7 miles to pick up my daughter (toddler son was with me). i had to go to the nearest service shop and almost $500 later its being fixed. *tr
Vehicle just stopped driving almost like it stalled and then started to coast. *tr
Vehicle moving at constant 45 mph when engine stumble felt, electronic throttle control/powertrain light illuminated and lost all ability to control vehicle speed with accelerator pedal. engine was still running and vehicle was able to be safely pulled off the main road. after turning vehicle off and then back on, the light went out and all systems were again ok. problem was traced to the electronic throttle control (throttle body) and fix requires replacement of the part. *tr
Vehicle suddenly started decelerating at a rapid pace. i was driving 60 mph, and the gas pedal suddenly seemed to stop sending gas to the engine. i had to pull over and coast to a stop. this was not covered by my lifetime warranty and is going to cost me over $600 in towing, parts and labor. *tr
When driving the truck we lose acceleration and pressing the gas pedal does nothing. this has happened now 4 times. the idle sits between 800 & 1100 rpms when this happens. we took the truck to the service department at pine lake ford in laporte, indiana and they said that the throttle body needs to be replaced at a cost of $383. our extended warranty just ran out and this seems to be a recall problem when i investigated it. we are afraid this is going to cause an accident given the fact most of our driving is highway driving. why isn't ford owning up to this problem and recall this part? does someone need to be hurt or be killed before ford takes action? *tr
Vehicle died and check engine light came on. we ran the diagnostic and it indicated the fuel actuator was getting stuck. according to the ford dealer, the throttle body needs to be replaced. it appears that many other owners of this vehicle have also had to have the throttle body replaced. *tr
At full speed on the freeway the throttle body decided to go into limp mode and go to an idle only. i had to quickly pull to the side or i would have been hit. if i would have been in heavy traffic i would have caused an accident. the situation happened again today while waiting for a red light. it sounds like that is being investigated already. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the vehicle hesitated while accelerating. the vehicle stalled several miles later as the contact applied the brakes. the vehicle was restarted and the failure recurred twice. the vehicle was towed to a dealer for diagnosis where the contact was informed that the throttle body would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the failure and current mileage was 102,000.
Car stalled while moving 3 times. once while in motion, the other 2 right after stops. would hit the gas & the car wouldn't move. i would turn off the car & restart it & it would run ok, then do it again. took it to autozone to have them tell me what codes came up & they said it was the p2111 stating the throttle actuator stuck on open. i have a 2 year old daughter & can't have take this kind of risk with her. its happened again over the last week several times. *tr
I was driving 35 mph in town when vehicle seemed to be losing power. i pulled over to the side of the road. the engine was running at a very rough idle . i tried to accelerate but it would barely move. i turned the engine off and restarted it . it did the same thing, no acceleration. i did this several times before it would run properly. it seemed rather jerky while driving. i was about 10 miles from home when this happened. on the way home i was driving at 55 mph and it died completely. the check engine light came on this time. i got it restarted and made it home. i have a code reader at my house. i checked and codes p2111 and p2112 were stored in the computer. i checked with a mechanic and was told the codes relate to the throttle body assembly. i was going to have it repaired but the mechanic told me that the part is on national back order. this is my only vehicle and i' m afraid to drive. what can i do. *tr
I was driving home on i-95 south and as i was exiting to go west on i-495 my ford escape lost all acceleration. i was extremely lucky that there wasn't much traffic around me and i was able to drift over to the shoulder and come to a stop. *tr
I was driving home from work. the car was running just fine when it suddenly decelerated and died. the little wrench on the left side of the instrument panel lit up. i turned on the hazard lights, turned off the ignition, put it in park and restarted it. it was exactly like the experiences of the other escape owners who had problems with the throttle. i had been noticing a "flutter" under the accelerator a few times, but don't know if it could be related. i have only had the car for a month. from what i have read from escape owners on other sites, ford company's reputation is suffering. i hope our concerns are being taken seriously. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated while traveling approximately 45 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. the vehicle was moved to the shoulder of the road where it was restarted. the vehicle resumed normal function then the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who stated the throttle body needed to be replaced. the vehicle will be repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 66,000. the vin was unavailable.
This is the 3rd time this problem happened. i'm driving normally, at a constant speed, and all of a sudden, wrench light comes on, rpms do weird things, gas pedal doesn't do anything, putting it in neutral in a drift downspeed does nothing, park does nothing. putting it in park and shutting the engine, and starting again makes the light go away and run fine again. this is a huge safety concern as i travel with young children and this will happen with no warning at all. very disappointed ford will not recall and fix this very common problem. *tr
While driving the car lost speed and rpms. car would not accelerate. it ran at an idle. dealership said throttle body needed to be replaced. the part has need on back order for some time. *tr
I was on the highway going around 60 mph. the vehicle seemed to die.i pulled over and realized it was still running, but would only idle and did not respond to pressing the gas pedal. i restarted the engine and drove about 50 miles without further incident, but engine warning light remained on. the next day, the engine warning light was on when i started the vehicle, and it lost power immediately. i restarted it and within driving 5 miles it " died" over 15 times. i attempted to drive it one more time and it repeated the same problem 3 times before i made it to the end of my block..i haven't driven it since. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the wrench warning icon illuminated as the vehicle lost power. the vehicle was restarted and functioned normally. the vehicle was later taken to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 59,210. the vin was unavailable.
Car seems to loose power. although the engine is still running it seems to not be able to accelerate or move. i have to turn on my blinkers and coast to a safe place and stop and restart my engine. *tr
2009 ford escape. consumer writes in regards to throttle body problems. *smd the consumer stated as she merged onto the highway, the vehicle totally shut down. the wrench light illuminated, she applied the brake and turned off the key and re-started the engine. the consumer was able to drive the vehicle to the dealer, but continued to experience the failure. an inspection revealed the throttle body needed to be replaced. however, the part was on back order.
