We have classified the 238 complaints from 2008 Ford Edge about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
I am unable to "select affected parts" in this form: parts - power train, transmission, battery. over the past 6 months there have been numerous incidents where my vehicle, upon returning to speed or entering a roadway/highway, or otherwise entering a roadway, it has made a noise, a sudden jerk, seem to hold speed (fail to increase speed) and seems to feel like it is failing to changed gears (appears to rev in rpms slightly), then jerks again, and comes back into routine shifting. it is an automatic. this happens often. i have had the fluid check, flushed, replaced, asked my mechanic and she can find no issues. it seems to feel like it bogs down, but rpms appear to increase (almost as if it is not in gear/neutral). it seems to be happening more and more frequently. i have routinely checked my car for recalls. and i should note have had the ball bearing go bad (as recalled) and replaced, including the entire arm on the left rear. additionally, my battery has failed and been replaced (approximately 3 years ago) and has since required replacement again. it needs to be jumped started, and upon first replacement (by ford) it was noted not all cylinders or cells were charged/charging. *tr
While driving at speeds between 40-65 mph the vehicle will engage harshly with a loud bang while in o/d. when o/d is off, car will accelerate faster, when applying break there is a hesitation and car will not slow down until breaks are applied over and over again. *tr
When traveling, all of a sudden the speedometer goes to 0, the maintenance wrench lights up and we get an led message that i cant recall exactly at the moment. the vehicle can continue until you stop. then it cannot proceed forward. once you stop and shift to park, then try to proceed again, there is a loud clunking noise from the transmission, and the vehicle cant move forward. i believe it is getting stuck in 5th or overdrive. when a code reader is attached by a mechanic, the code it calls out is for the output speed sensor (in the transmission). once the code is cleared the vehicle can perform normally. we had the oss replaced by a reputable transmission shop, and it was fine for a month or so. now again we have seen the problem twice since replacing the oss. there seem to be many complaints on the internet regarding this exact problem. here is an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=px3sc2ycmeo. *tr
I bought my edge, used last year and i love it. although, every now and then while driving the transmission makes a huge bang noise. its scary!!! i hope that ford will take care of this. it seems there are other complaints regarding the same problem. *tr
I bought brand new a 2008 ford edge i have had so much trouble with it and it has been in shop so many times and they still can't figure it out. from transmission to hot temp, bearings in tire being melted with under 60,000 miles!!!! i have repaired brake booster twice!!! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford edge. the contact stated that while driving 15 mph, the vehicle lost power and stalled. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised the contact that there were no failures found within the vehicle and the computer was reset. the failure persisted. the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. the failure mileage was 41,000 and the current mileage was 42,000. updated 08/28/12*lj the consumer stated the failures occured when the vehicle was parked or in motion. updated 09/05/2012 *js
Vehicle rolls when placed in park, vehicle rolls backwards on inclines while vehicle is in drive, rear bulb constantly burns out, strut and suspension failed. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford edge limited. the contacted stated that while traveling 20-25 mph, a popping noise emitted outside of the vehicle as the vehicle became resistant to acceleration attempts. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who confirmed that the pcm module failed and the engine coils were melted. the manufacturer was contacted. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 81,000 and the current mileage was 82,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford edge. the contact stated that the vehicle would not accelerate from a stop. the contact also stated that the vehicle eventually jerked when it began to accelerate. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 67,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford edge. the contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning in heavy traffic. the contact managed to exit onto the shoulder. the failure was experienced numerous times, sporadically and always without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for a week but the dealer was unable to diagnose a failure. the contact retrieved the vehicle from the dealer and while exiting the lot, the failure recurred. the dealer then made repairs to the vehicle that were unknown to the contact however, the repairs did not correct the failure. the manufacturer was notified who advised the contact that the vehicle was not under warranty and offered no assistance. the failure and the current mileage was 68,000.
The vehicle was brought to the ford dealer to have an oil leak checked. they determined there was a leak with the ptu (power transfer unit) seal. they tried to repair the seal, but this did not work. they ordered a new seal and it has been on back order. the vehicle has been at the ford garage since 6/25/2012 and cannot be used until a new seal is installed. *tr
What started out as noise in the rear tires, i thought, became very loud and distracting. took it in to a tire dealer and replaced 2 tires and had the same very loud whine, even the employee at the tire store was amazed at how loud the sound was. he thought it was bearings and i took it in to a friend of mine who owns a repair shop. i took it in to him because i thought my warranty was no longer valid. he repaired the very badly worn bearings and told me he was very surprised at how bad they were knowing how and where my driving was done. mostly on the freeways no off road driving. i decided to look on line to see if this had been a problem with other 2008 ford edges and it has been reported in the 2007's also. seems like a trend to me. i went into my ford dealer and the service manager said it has been seen as a problem and suggested we look on the warranty and extended service plan and see if it was covered. it was, under the powertrain warranty. i asked if they would reimburse me for the repairs? the service manager said they would talk to the ford customer service in our region and let me know. she said no! they would not because i didn't bring it back to them, remember i thought it was out of warranty, then she said i was not the original owner, i bought it from that dealer with 9388 miles on it. all the other warranties that came with the car were honored why not this one?? i was not the original owner for those warranties either. i would be happy just to be reimbursed on the bearings, the total was $550. i also have the expense of 2 new michelin tires @ $500. help! *js
Driving the interstate car seemed to kick out of gear and engine revved up..went in and out of gear.also after that car shifted very hard in 1st 3 gears..it worked fine for awhile and then did it again a few months later..after a few more episodes over a years time the transmission finally went out while my wife was in the middle of an intersection..luckily,it coasted enough to get off the road..i was able to get it home in 1st gear, but, wouldn't go into gear after a stop light..had to put in park and back into drive..had the transmission replaced and ok so far, but, something should be done about this..she could have been in a crash as it was a high speed intersection.. *js

My ford edge has jerked and jumped a few times but was told that nothing was wrong with it. well on friday june 01, 2012 i tried to put car into gear and it did not want to go, it started jerking and jerking. then it started going, lights started going off such as the wrench, tire pressure, and then odomoter dropped to zero and it said data odomoter error. the next day i turned the car on and was making a loud whining noise. i took the car to gulf coast ford in angleton, texas on saturday june 02, 2012 and they called my husband wednesday june 06th and told him that they had to take the transmission apart. said they had three cars last week with the same problem and they currently had one with same problem right next to mine and they said they are not sure why this is happening. ford has a serious problem with this car and it needs to be fixed. my car is at 93,500 miles and the transmission should not be going out already. i wish they would recall this car completely. i am ready to get rid of it. *js
This has happened several times. the vehicle was moving forward and all of a sudden the air bag light & the check engine light came on & the display said "no odometer available" . when i came to a stop, the car would not move - it was like it was in neutral then all the sudden the transmission engaged with a loud clunk & the car moved & all the lights went out. a wrench appeared on the dashboard and the screen read odo error with dashes. i could not go. it was as if my car was stuck in neutral. even after turning the car off and on several times it did not remedy the problem. it also was shifting hard from park to drive, etc. *tr
The transmission will occasionally fail to engage properly when accelerating from a stop. the vehicle will initially move forward but then will fail to accelerate as the engine continues to increase rpm. this has occurred multiple times. the first maintenance performed at ford was to rebuild the transmission. after the repair there were no problems for almost 4 months and then the transmission problem recurred. this last time it occurred almost caused an horrific accident. as the auto accelerated from a side street to make a left hand turn onto a four lane highway, the transmission failed to accelerate after its initial acceleration and stopped in the middle of oncoming traffic. a t-bone accident was barely avoided. the second ford repair was to replace a 'sensor' and was just picked up today from ford. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford edge. the contact stated while driving out of his garage in reverse the vehicle stopped moving and he was unable to continue driving. the vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the power train unit burned and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 80,000. updated 7/18/12 *cn the consumer stated after waiting two months for the part, he instead purchased a used part. updated 07/25/12
The vechile loss power and stalled out. after that the car on the second occurrence won"t start had to charge battery the car raced whiled idling and had no power to run. went back to the dealer and are unable to find any problem. so we are now stuck with a car that will shut down and lose all power which is not safe to drive do to the fact that if we drove it at night and stalls out we lose all power and with no power the other cars may run into us and cause an accident which we are unable to prevent. thank you this is a dangerous situation. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) *tt
I was in drive and stopped at a light on a hill with an automatic transmission. when the light turned green and i took my foot off the brake i started rolling backwards. it didn't stop rolling until i put my foot back on the brake. *tr
The power take off unit (transfer case) developed a leak on the right hand side. the leak drips onto the exhaust pipe creating smoke and an awful smell. this could result in a fire. *tr
I have taken this edge to the ford dealer 3 times because of surging and the rpm's surging, clunking, etc. all three times was told nothing was wrong with it, now at 80,000 it has completely lost power and the tac revs to 3 and 4. i'm soooo frustrated that this is a known problem and after 3 visits with the same complaint, we are looking at transmission replacement!! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford edge. the contact stated that the vehicle accelerated very slowly from stops. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on fifteen occasions, but they could not diagnose a failure. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the contact was finally informed that the vehicle was equipped with incorrect cam phasers. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure continued. the vehicle was again taken back to the dealer and the contact was informed that the axle and wheel bearings were damaged. the contact was informed that this may be the cause of the poor acceleration failure. the vehicle was again repaired and the failure continued. the failure mileage was 30,000.
My vehicle is a 2008 and it only has 109,000 miles on it and i started to hear a whining sound, brought it to the auto mechanic and they said that it might be something in the transmission such as a bearing. well to my surprise they transmission dealer advised me that i needed a whole new transmission. transmissions are supposed to last a long time and this is very unexpected. $3800.00 for a new transmission. i have always heard a clunking sound coming from the transmission when it shifted gears or when i put in in reverse. *kb
After starting car, vehicle made loud clunk sound when put in reverse. car would not accelerate without pressing accelerator more than usual and engine revved high. dash board went blank except for wrench symbol, airbag symbol and odometer had all dashes. turned car off, waited a few minutes, turned car back on and everything was back to normal, car drove fine. this has happened about 5 times within the past 3 years, several months apart. have also had to replace rear tail lights multiple times, sometimes within 2 days of replacement. have taken car to ford service, but they can't pinpoint problem. now car is out of warranty. seems like it could be electrical or sensors. have read and seen videos of many others with this same problem with this year, make and model. wish ford would help owners like ourselves with a recall to fix this, as our loyalty has gone away with frustration. have just today, 03/27/14 had my car towed to repair shop to check transmission. the dashboard has returned to normal, but loud clunk when shifting and will not accelerate without flooring it. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford edge. the contact stated that occasionally when driving at low speeds the vehicle would change gears violently, causing the vehicle to lunge forward abnormally. the dealer diagnosed that there were no failures within the vehicle. the manufacturer was contacted but denied any assistance with repairs to the vehicle. the failure mileage was unavailable and the current mileage was 41,000.
Whenever you accelerate, the transmission begins to jerk. the power train problem indicator light will come on and go off. the car frequently jerks. *tr
I bought my 2008 brand new. at 39,000mi i took to dealership after noticing the transmission lagging, slipping, loud very hard shifts. also was parking at the grocery store when i pulled into spot, with foot on the break car lurched and engine revved. if it hadn't had my foot on break it could have hit someone. of course dealership couldn't replicate, was told to bring back when it didn't it more regularly. at 59,000 i took it back in after sever times of loud/hard shift and jerking like i had been rear ended by something. as well as being on a road trip where it felt like it slipped out of gear and the wrench light came on. i pulled to side of road and called ford. they said to turn car off and back on. wrench light went off and car seemed fine. then while on interstate it revved really high again but car felt like it was in neutral, it wouldn't accelerate when i pushed the gas. pulled off again and cut off and back on and it seemed fine. dealership was able to replicate, but results inconclusive. was told to bring back if happened again. at 83,000 it is back in, it has been loudly shifting with the big jerk like before this time more frequently and also was coming off exit ramp of interstate and at stop light, car was in drive, but wouldn't go, felt like it was sitting in neutral again. dealership has had it for 3 days and found metal shavings in transmission. will not confirm this is covered by warranty even though it is an existing issue. can not promise for will honor repair. wants to rip out my transmission to see what problem is, but wont give me any kind of estimate as to cost. only said ford would "assist" but couldn't tell me how much. i have read hundreds of similar issues online of the exact same issues. seems like ford would have recalled this already. this is not only an issue of a faulty transmission, but also a huge safety issue as well. *tr
The vehicle would at different times, have trouble shifting from park to reverse, in drive, etc. it sounded like the transmission was broken. this problem would arise, and then go away. the first time the dealership reset the computer, and it ran fine for weeks, then the problem came about again, and went away, the last time around sept 18th, it was worse, so i had it towed and repaired. the dealership replaced the output shaft sensor and turbin shaft sensor at a cost of $700. i was impelled to report a concern, after seeing other concerns on line for the same issues, and a customer of mine who has an edge is experiencing the same issues. ford motor company, and the dealerships do not seem to want to seriously address this issue, and i felt like they were trying to avoid admitting to a major problem. *kb
We bought our edge certified through the local ford dealership and within months the transmission would violently shift between first and second. when i took it in they said they couldn't replicate the problem. it happens at least a few times a month and i'm nervous that there will be complete failure once we are outside the warranty period. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford edge. the contact stated that after shifting into park, the shifter would become stuck. the contact would have to shut off and restart the vehicle in order for the gear selector to dislodge. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised him that they were unable to duplicate the failure. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer had not been contacted. the failure mileage was approximately 20,000. the vin was unavailable. updated 06/05/12*lj updated 06/06/2012*js
My wife was driving the vehicle and upon acceleration from a complete stop, the vehicle randomly would go into a "neutral-like" state. rpms would increase dramatically, but the car would crawl between 3-5mph. the message, "od read error" would display on the dashboard, power steering would go out and brakes would not respond well (it was as if the car had turned off). when shifting from drive to park or reverse, the vehicle would jerk forward violently, as if rear-ended. once the car was turned off and started again, the problem would go away. we brought the vehicle to the dealership multiple times and the dealership even determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. this was only at 37,600 miles. the dealer said it was a transmission issue, but it appears to be an on-board computer issue as well. after transmission was replaced, 5 weeks later had issue with shifting into first gear. vehicle shifted very hard into first gear. car is back down at the dealership again. wrote a letter to ford expressing my concern and requested the car be repurchased, they denied my request. *tr
As i was accelerating the transmission slipped, jerked as the engine was shifting gears. it has happened multiple times (6) since i first experienced this. *tr
2008 ford edge, transmission issues. car acted like the brakes were on then when i went to the next stop sign i could not go forward, when trying to change gears it sounded like the whole engine was falling out. this is a dangerous situation had i been out in a busy city, and stuck in the middle of the road etc... *tr
Speeds up and down at low speeds and clunks in the transmission, also now it does it at 20 mph when the outside temperature is around 90 degrees. *tr
Major hesitation when pushing on the gas pedal after coming to a stop or trying to pass someone. happens frequently (every day). ford dealer said they found no problems. *tr
2008 ford edge has a serious safety concern that needs to be addressed immediately. the ford dealership and ford motor co. refuse any more repair attempts of defective vehicle. while driving at speeds between 40-65 mph without any warning or symptom the vehicle will suddenly make an extremely loud bang and violent jerk of the entire vehicle as if being rear ended. this occurs so fast and quickly that it is over almost as soon as it began. this is such a frightening and distractive ordeal for not only the driver but also the other occupants that family is afraid to use the vehicle. it is as if the transmission slips for a second then violently reengages. the problem first occurred in may 2010 @ 48k miles. now after 13k miles, 6 months and 7 tries at repair/diagnosis at ford dealerships and hours on the phone with ford dealers and ford motor co. the problem still exists! i really feel that ford was just stalling and not admitting to defect/malfunction in order to let the 5yr - 60k mile powertrain warranty expire. the truth is no vehicle in the world is engineered/built to take this physical punishment and not fail. i believe if this issue is not resolved it will lead to a catastrophic failure, and i pray that no one is injured. *tr
Having transmission issues. when accelerating from a stopped position, the automatic transmission delays in going to the next gear, causing the car to have a high rpm. this has happened several times. also, it seems the car shifts hard between gears. *tr
I am another ford edge owner with safety concerns relating to transmission issues. my car upon acceleration got me far enough into a highway to be struck by an on coming 18 wheeler. thank god, he was able to drive around me. the rps roar and the car basically crawls, the transmission engages and when it does it feels as if you have been rammed in the rear end. i have read many many complaints of the same situation occurring in the ford edge. please investigate and have ford correct this issue before others are killed. my car is currently at the ford dealership, long lewis ford in hoover, alabama. *tr
2008 ford edge awd 26k miles purchased used. transmission shifts slow. varies under different load and throttle positions. some times slips between 2 to 3 shifts. noticed the day purchased. *tr
2008 ford edge - transmission and acceleration defect. our edge hesitates when accelerating after a stop and then jumps forward violently. sometimes it will not go at all. afraid of running into something. we got the throttle body replaced. now the car will not change gears. rpm are over 7 and car won't go past 20 mph. we have had it in the shop 3 times for the same problem. because it often runs fine and then suddenly has this issue where it won't go, it could cause a serious accident on a highway. i've seen many, many other people complaining about this same car, same issue all over the web. ford needs to do something. started in april '10, issue still not fixed as of aug '10. *tr
Upon acceleration the rpm's will go up yet the car will slow down and you will feel a bang as if someone has rear-ended you. this has happened quite a few times within a year of us purchasing it brand new. the dealer couldn't find anything wrong several times i brought it to them. finally, i left it there a few months ago and wouldn't take it back until it was fixed. they re-did the transmission and said it is fixed. i have been having the same issue with it still. i almost got into a car accident because it did it as i was turning and it just wouldn't kick into gear, then a big bang and it goes. i almost got hit dead on. now they are telling me they can't do anything about it because i have 60,240 miles on it and it is out of warranty at 60,000. i have been complaining about it since they fixed it but everytime i went to bring it there to have it checked, they didn't have a loaner or the tech who needs to look at it is off. we called corporate and they did nothing. this is ridiculous that i am reading so many other people having the same issue and nothing is getting done - no recalls, nothing. this is unfair as to i have maintained everything on this vehicle and it should not be doing this. this is a ford issue and they should be taking care of this. it is not the consumers fault for poor manufacturing of a vehicle that was advertised so great! they should be fixing this issue before someone gets hurt or killed in an accident. *tr
Dangerous acceleration and dramatic deceleration between 20 - 40 mph with the 2008 ford edge. *tr
In december 2009, my wife and i purchased a certified pre owned 2008 ford edge se. the vehicle has been having transmission problems. it will slip and then engage very abruptly causing the vehicle to lurch forward. it will almost hesitate and then engage violently. the speedometer will also jump up and down +/- 5 mph. it feels like we are being hit in the rear by a car. the problem occurs every couple hundred miles thus dar. the vehicle was taken to greenway ford orlando 3 times, each after an incident occured. the first time they reprogrammed the transmission cpu. the second time they removed a nail from the tire. the third time a ford engineer came out and couldn't find anything. they will not open the transmission or do anything more. i have called the dealership and ford many times.
I have a 2008 ford edge and it is having shift problems in going from 1st to drive. this is intermittent and will not move forward at all. it has left me stalled in traffic a couple of times. ford service has been working on this for over 6 weeks and have kept the vehicle. they just seem to keep replacing parts after they reprogrammed the transmission. this is a safety and reliability problem. my wife is afraid to drive it if we ever get it back. they have only given us a six year old loaner! *tr
It happened when i came off the highway onto the side road, there was a loud clunk in the rear of the vehicle and i lost power to drive, and when i pressed the gas it would only go 30 miles of speed. i went into a parking lot, turned the motor off and let it sit for 10 min. i restarted it and it seemed fine. but now on a regular basis it will clunk in the rear like i have been hit and then clear up and drive good. i have had it checked many times by ford and other places but no one can find anything wrong with the drive train. i notice on ford forum that many people are having the same problem. there should be a recall for this vehicle by ford to cover all ford edges from 2008 to 2010 and have the drive trains replaced, even if they can not find any problems. or find out what is really happening to this vehicle and have them all recalled to fix the problem. *tr
2008 ford edge has hard shifts (engine races like it's in neutral and then slams into gear with a loud bang) in two scenarios - from 1st to 2nd, while coasting in stop-and-go traffic, and when quickly accelerating, as in a passing maneuver, from around 35 mph. this results in unpredictable automobile performance.
Occasionally, (once or twice a year) the vehicle jerks violently once between 20-45 mph when slowing and then accelerating. feels like the vehicle was rear ended or hit a huge pot hole. this has happened very intermittently. recently, it is happening once or twice a month. local ford dealer checked pcm (?) calibration and updated it to tsb 08. hopefully this will solve the problem. *tr
While making a low speed left hand turn, the driver heard a loud bang and the card stopped dead in the road. upon investigation the right wheel including the disc brake rotor, caliper, and wheel has separated from the transaxle. the half shaft was pulled completely out of the transaxle and the wheel assembly was held onto the car by the brake line and the shock strut assembly. the lower control arm was completely separated from the wheel. the car was completely undrivable at this point and had to be towed. *tr
Ongoing transmission issues since purchased new. been to repair for more than 17 days and issues still remain unresolved. took car in for regular scheduled oil changes and repairs.at approximately 30,000 miles the camphasers ( ford admitted wrong camphasers had been installed) were replaced. coolant problem discovered as well when vehicle engine was removed. odd odor coming from heater, when vehicle returned after camphaser and coolant issue did not resolve situation, and vehicle returned to galpin ford service, was told that axle and bearing were broken and that the steering wheel was not in proper position. i am deeply concerned for other ford edge owners as well as members of the public who may be affected by vehicle that does not properly engage and appears to stall before moving forward.... this is an enormously serious issue, that should not be ignored. reading the prior complaints, tells me this is not a new problem, and that consumers and ford are aware of the transmissions issues. please assist. *tr
