On average, the 2008 Ford Edge starts to “feel” problems with the POWER TRAIN and its various aspects after 90 055 miles.

Components Affected by POWER TRAIN Issues

We have classified the 238 complaints from 2008 Ford Edge about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION 17 DRIVELINE 1

Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2008 Ford Edge

Battery light stayed on during a 4.5 hour trip. after reaching the end of the trip, the battery cables were found to be corroded. noticed theterminal protector has melted. used distilled water to fill the acid level in the battery, some was spilled on the positive battery cable connection(from battery to power of underhood fuse box), it sizzled from being hot! after filling the battery, the batt. light stayed off for another 3 hours of trip, and lit up again. had the battery tested, battery was found to be defective. r&r the battery, battery light is on again. no driveability issues, just concerned about, what is causing resistance in electrical charging system, and possible "fire"!

When driving the vehicle it loses the ability to accelerate and only allows me to try to pull off the road to a safe place with the momentum of the vehicle before it lost power. if i am not at a place where i can immediately pull off safely i am stranded in traffic. when this occurs i am able to turn off my vehicle for a short period of time and when i restart it, the vehicle resumes normal operation until this happens again. it has happened in various weather conditions and at various speeds. when the acceleration is lost the powertrain fault light comes on.

Start engine, move transmission into reverse, transmission clunks loudly. when transmission is moved to drive, engine revs high, barely moves forward, speedometer stuck at zero despite moving up to 20mph. engine light comes on, airbag light comes on.

Driving down the road and the wrench light comes on, speedometer stops working and the vehicle loses power. i can also smell a burning smell. once i have come to a stop, the transmission shifts very hard like someone has hit the vehicle. this has happened several times, including a couple of times when i pulled into traffic and the vehicle lost power, coming very close to causing an accident with oncoming traffic. very dangerous and i am very apprehensive about driving the car due to my family's safety.

Takata recall i was driving my child to school in highway traffic, speeds of 55 mph. the car mileage indicators went blank, a wrench light came on and all power to car was lost during turning a curve on highway.vehicle started making very loud popping noise and jerking the car. turned car off after coming to a stop, restarted car, no warning lights, everything was normal except, when starting car, it made very loud noise as it was started, then as i placed in drive or reverse it moved the vehicle jerking an loud popping noise. the entire motor moved sideways when placed in gear an hood up. also now it no longer works in low gear. once placed on machine it gave code po720-722

2008 ford edge while driving on city streets all of a sudden the wrench light came on, airbag light, the mileage odometer blanked out and the speedometer stopped working there was a loss of power. the transmission makes a huge clunking sound and jerks into gear shifting into drive from park and reverse

While normally driving, the "wrench" light will come on and the vehicle goes into a low-power "limp mode". so i pull over immediately, and put the vehicle in park, shut it off, and remove the key. i sit with it powered off for about a 10 second count, and restart the engine. the wrench light goes off, and i can drive normally until it happens again.

Vehicle in motion on city road when vehicle all of a sudden makes loud/hard clank noise and immediately loses power - almost like it started towing a trailer! loss of power, wrench light, tps light, airbag light all come on, speedometer stops working. pulled over, loud/hard clank sound with every gear change p-2. vehicle had displayed no issues prior to this. dropped vehicle off at mechanic, when he looked at it next morning, vehicle is running perfect. today is a friday, i was supposed to go out of town (via i75) but i am going to stay local as it does not feel safe to drive on the highway. i am greatly concerned about what appears to be a huge safety issue with this car. all you have to do is search - there are multiple complaints about the same issue to be found all over the internet with no fixes known. ford needs to issue a recall and fix this asap before someone gets seriously hurt or is killed from the extreme loss of power the vehicle is suffering from when this happens.

Driving, going up a hill, the car stopped accelerating and lost power going up. i almost got into an accident. the car doesn't accelerate and it has all the fluids and changed of oils. the car clunks and has a wrench. when i put into reverse it jump a very minimum acceleration. i'm afraid to drive it. i had to tow the car. the mechanic couldn't find the problem. he said he cleared up the computer and it was fine. then i was driving on the highway and it happened again. no acceleration. why ford hasn't made this into a safety recall. i did my investigation and i believe it has to do with the transmission sensors. please help me.

I own a 2008 ford edge limited i am having the same problem as some people on here are with the wrench 🔧 light also a air bag light comes on and i have almost had an accident because the car speedometer stops working and the car shifts super hard it seems to be happening more frequently i did my research on fords website for finding out the problem and it's a glitch this is a huge safety concern when trying to avoid an accident from occurring also you can't even view the speed i think this should be investigated and recalled because i it can create a unsafe environment to not only my vehicle but others as well.

On 4/26/19 the ford edge was setting in park letting my sisters get out the ford edge was put in drive it would not move put it in reverse it would not move, turn it off and on again it started to work fine.i do not what is going on it

While driving down the road, the odometer suddenly drops to zero while still moving at the posted speed limit. the wrench symbol warning light in the dash comes on, as well as the airbag light. the mileage is then cleared, and the dash reads "odo error". pulled over, turned off the vehicle and removed the key from the ignition. go to turn the vehicle back on, car starts normally, all the warning lights are cleared. put the vehicle into reverse, and hear and feel a loud "clunk" as the vehicle shifts, and am able to back up normally. when shifting back into drive, the rpms jump up, the car shifts and makes the loud "clunk", and when pushing the accelerator, the vehicle barely moves. it will occasionally come back and the vehicle will return to it's normal running state, but then it will eventually returned to the defective state. no odometer while driving, no power if you stop leaving you stranded.

While driving in the city it jump from first to second gear with a hard boom. driving on the highway while going up a hill jump out of gear and will not pull i pull over to the shoulder. to get the car to function again i have to turn the ford edge off turn it back on this is not good. what can be done to fix the problem. *tr

I was driving in a city street and my car suddenly had very decreased power and the wrench light came on. i drove until i found a place to safely pull over to the side of the road. when i turn the car off and back on the light turns off.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford edge. while driving 70 mph, the check engine and air bag warning indicators illuminated. also, the odometer became inoperable and the vehicle failed to maintain forward momentum. the vehicle was safely guided off of the roadway, the ignition was placed in the off position, and the vehicle was restarted; however, it failed to accelerate. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. krause family ford of woodstock (located at 195 woodstock pkwy, woodstock, ga 30188, (770) 592-8873) and the manufacturer were contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 159,000. *tt vehicle was repaired.*jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford edge. while driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle jerked without warning. the vehicle was taken to nakoma plaza auto (608-271-2323, located at 4514 verona rd, madison, wi 53711) where it was diagnosed that the driveshaft needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure nd referred the contact to nhtsa. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 165,000. *tt*jb

Several times now, my car will not accelerate. this has happened while going 40, 60, 70mph on the hwy. i have had to instantly put hazards on and try to pull over which isn't always easy during rush hour traffic. when this happens, i pull off, and then my car lurches forward and shifts gears and then can accelerate. this has also happened when i have been at a complete stop, and tried to accelerate. when you cannot move forward, or crawl at speeds under 5mph, but your rpms are reaching 7, there is something seriously wrong. i have taken it in a few times only to be told they cannot find or recreate the issues, so they send me on my way. it sounds as if many others are having the exact same issues. i am very nervous that my luck in pulling off out of harms way will run out. i have called my dealership to once again have it looked at but they cannot get me in for 10 days.... should i even drive this car if it is not reliable?? i truly am frightened to drive now, and this is my only car and am a single mother. not sure what i am supposed to do. i really hope that ford recalls this, as i have read that there are several lawsuits pending this exact issue.

The transmission starts slipping with no warning and car won't go above 5mph until you stop turn car off and wait about 5 minutes and restart car the works fine for awhile then starts again

At 90,000 miles the transmission started slipping took it to the transmission shop did a diagnostic change the transmission oil and nothing came on the test they said there was nothing wrong with it it slipped again in a couple weeks i had to pull over put it in park started again and it went. after eight months of working good yesterday same slipping happened again took it to my mechanic did a diagnostic and again came out ok this is crazy. planning a trip and he says i wouldn't take the car because you never know what will happen the transmission seems to be slipping but there's no recalls on it and read a lot of complaints on this why is there no recall?

One week prior to event-the wrench light came on while starting car. i turned ignition off and re-started car ignition-drove fine without further incident until 1 week later: pulled into a 1 mile driveway to get to my work office suite (flat road) driving about 30 miles, car came to a stop without warning-at that time all the warning lights came on. i put it into park/with emergency brake as it began rolling near an office suite-the steering wheel was frozen. have had same stalling issues while driving car since purchasing the car at 18,000 miles-each time told different things are causing it by dealer, i.e. tss/oss sensors, ebt, reflash pom which i had fixed. with curren event- are in process of diagnosing it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford edge. while driving 70 mph coming off a ramp, the engine seized and the vehicle slowed down as the engine continued to rev. the contact stated that no failure codes appeared when he checked on his code reader. the dealer (larry h. miller ford lincoln draper, 11442 lone peak pkwy, draper, ut 84020, (801) 590-0561) stated that the failure may be due to the transmission. the manufacturer was not contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 94,500. the vin was not available.

While driving through an intersection at approx 40 mph transmission shutter and locked the wheels up. luckily the traffic around me was able to dodge me without incident. i shut it off and restarted put into 1st gear and pulled off to side of road. there was burnt gear oil smell coming from under the suv. now it comes and goes trans slipping and ptu overheating.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford edge. while driving 10 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle seized. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to arrotta's automax and rv (6623 n division st, spokane, wa 99208, 1-509-703-7797), but the cause of the failure could not be determined. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 60,000. *tt *tr

When first started up it some times turns off with no warning. then a constant ticking sound then intermittently when reversing the car kicks back as if transmission is not engaging and has loss of acceleration when merging onto freeway has hesitation and almost got into a wreck a driving rpm go up and down eraticly and acceleration is slugish. brakes are constanly quelling and they dont need replaced i just bought this car 2months ago from used car lot bought extended warranty for 1800.00 but does not take effect for 90 days but might not be able to claim since this is a problem before coverage was in effect havent even made my first paynent i will have them for 2yrs car has 150008 miles.

2016 driving out of subdivision, came to stop before starting up incline.motor was racing but car was slowly moving, drove a short distance,at very slow movement.pulled off road and had car towed to ford dealership to have it checked out. they found nothing wrong. 2018 after hwy. driving and then turning road...came to stop sign, put foot on gas to make turn and car motor was racing but car would barely move.moved about 8 feet then put gear into neutral for a minute and then put gear into drive.it made a loud noise , but did go into drive. drove 1 block and it apparently slipped out of gear and rolled to a stop.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford edge. while operating the vehicle, a clunking noise was present when shifting gears and the vehicle hesitated while accelerating. on several occasions, the check engine indicator illuminated during the failures. after turning the vehicle off and back on, the failure would sometimes be corrected. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failures. the manufacturer and local dealer were not notified. the failure mileage was 85,000.

Transmission slipping and downshifting hard - around 80,000k i started to notice that the transmission would bang when i put it in reverse. after that, other issues started happening - while pressing the gas pedal, vehicle would not switch to a higher gear. i'd have to come to a complete stop (in traffic!), put it in park, then try to drive again. periods when the vehicle would get to speed then slip. transmission would bang like i was being rear-ended. changed the valve body, tss, and oss sensors. that worked for a while but now it's acting up again. downshifts so hard and bangs while i'm driving at various speeds. i'm afraid it's going to go completely while i'm driving. there was no prior damage to vehicle to cause this malfunction.

Speedometer and tachometer at random speeds quits working , low tire pressure light, wrench light, airbag light, check engine light. constant loud clunking sound when changing gears. the car kicks back as if transmission is not engaging and has loss of acceleration and wheels roll and when red light turns green, the car takes time to accelerate and wheels start rolling and make a loud sound.i pull over the vehicle on the side of the road every time and turn it off, then turn the vehicle on again so it can go back to normal. usually happens on both city streets or highway at a random speed between 45 mph and 60 mph. 114,000 miles. i have been having this issue since i bought the vehicle on feb, 2018 and took it to multiple mechanics and all of them claimed it's either a speed sensor issue/ transmission failure/ electrical system.

Check engline light & wrench comes on and the 2008 edge suddenly lost power, then entered "limp mode". my husband took it in 3 different times to the service department, and each time was told they couldn't find the problem. the 4th time i had the same problem on a 45mph, 3 lane road. the power just went out, accelarator no longer worked, but then returned but only about 5mph. lucky i wasn't killed! i took it back to service dept. and told them they needed to check the throttle body (etb). they laughed at me, but then called 3 days later to tell me that it is the etb and over $750. i contacted ford as they had issued the so-called "customer satisfaction program" extending the etb warranty coverage for up to 10 years of service or 150,000 miles. ford says all vehicles are eligible for the program, regardless of mileage, but not 2008. though they acknowledged they know the problem goes back to 2005 models, they feel my car is too old & has too many miles at 104k. this is a life threatening problem and ford refuses to do anything. when someone dies because of this known issue, i hope that ford executives are held as complicitors in premeditated murder. after all the problems with the brakes, no parts available, and now this, i will never buy another ford and will get this piece of junk out of my life asap.

Transmission failure travelling at 55 mph with transmission de-decelerating to first gear and 20 mph almost resulting in serious car accident on highway. previously no symptoms of issues while driving.

Ptu has overheated causing the oil inside to become black and gummy, also causing one or both seals to fail leading to the undercoating of the vehicle to be covered in black thick oil. this was noticed only after a 200 mile run on the interstate in the winter of 2017, 65-80 mph... we have since found that numerous others have had the same issue with this generation of awd ptu's and is a engineering issue with the design of the vehicle

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford edge. while driving 25 mph, the wrench icon and the air bag warning indicator illuminated. the accelerator pedal failed to work and the vehicle gradually came to a complete stop. the speed on the odometer and the tachometer was incorrect. the contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road, turned off, and turned on the vehicle. the vehicle was returned to normal. the failure recurred and the vehicle failed to restart. the vehicle automatically restarted and the speed automatically increased from 0 to 70 mph. the contact applied the brakes to reduce the speed. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 105,929. *bf *tr

Car will jerk, slip, beat and bang. stopped pulling at a red light. got towed home . took off battery cable for 30mins . started working again for awhile. does this often, repair shops have no clue except for new tranny.it will also try to pull forward while in park when you have the other problems also. it has done this while sitting still and while running 70 on the interstate.

Going 55 mph. all of a sudden car lose power. engine sounds like it's in neutral but shift lever is in d. if you press gas, engine speed shows on the tach but transmission not responding. made a very harrowing condition as i tried to find a safe place to pull over. when shifted from d to p, very hard jerking motion that shook the car violently, trans makes a very hard clunking noise, and as if wants to separate from the engine. same result when shifted from p to r, and p to d. car is currently parked waiting for mechanic to diagnose. don't have money to take it to overpriced dealer. from what i can see from blogs, forums, boards, etc, on the internet looks like not an isolated case.

Driving and out of no where, receive an error message that says "odo data error", the car holds the current speed but it's very apparent that something is off as the car is now making a humming/air pressure sound (speedometer & tachometer stops working at various speeds) when this happens the wrench, airbag, abs, stability control indicator and engine light illuminate. within 5 minutes new error appears (tire pressure monitor fault). once you have pressed the brakes and come to a complete stop the car is extremely hesitant to accelerate even with the gas pedal pushed completely to the floor it doesn't gain power until it has rolled about 15-20 feet and at that point there is a extremely loud bang which makes you think the entire underbelly of the car has fallen out. at that point it regains speed again, but if you stop it does the same thing all over. switching gears result in a loud bang and jerking action of the car with little to no acceleration power. temporary remedy is to pull over turn car off wait a minute or two then restart the car. at that point when switching gears the bang and jerk happen again with the car slow to accelerate for a few seconds then it takes off like a race horse. sometimes this remedies it while other times the same process is repeated multiple times within one trip. this has occurred on city streets and major expressways at speeds of 35 mph to 60 mph. first started experiencing the issue at about 170k miles and has been going on for over a year with no solutions from mechanics. if a mechanic with equipment/computers can't remedy a repair and seeing how there are numerous complaints of the same issue ford should issue a recall to repair any components that could trigger the issue. this is pure negligence seeing that there are so many complaints. my opinion is it has something to do with the transmission and computer system.

When theying to accept on a city street the car would not go. odo error came up. speedometer wouldn't move at all. car was turned off and restarted. wrench light and check engine light came on. car moves a little bit but did not run normal and clunked hard when put in park. mechanic says it's a sensor issue that's common in this car.

While driving ,in full motion, , the car comes to an almost stop! scares you to death, you check to make sure you haven't accidently put the car in neutral , all the warning lights on the dash light up ,the check engine, the low tire gage symbol, the tool light,, the speedometer stops working, . the car refuse to move forward, placed in reverse it moves backward ,the ford dealer is unable to fix the problem ,codes don't show up to help identify the problem. the danger is it happens while you are driving. its been diagnosed as a transmission problem (very expensive) but that's not what it is. you reprogram it temporary, by taking the positive battery cable loose for a few seconds, the car drives perfect until it happens again, its happen three times with this car, i have called the ford cooperate office to report this problem.

Made a turn off interstate into a busy road, my vehicle jerked and lost its ability to accelerate. leaving me in a very dangerous situation with cars flying around me to avoid hitting me. i managed to make it into a parking lot. i had a friend check the vehicle and with the hood up he had me put in reverse and it looked like the motor was going to jump out of the vehicle, same happened in drive. he put his computer on and a code for the drive speed sensor was present. the code was cleared and then noticed the speed and rpm gauges were inaccurate. this happens on occasion. upon research i see this sensor has a recall on it but not for my year 08 edge. please recall asap. this can cause some seriously bad accident when your vehicle looses its ability to accelerate when in traffic. i fear this will happen and my life is in the line. ford is aware there is a apparent problem noted by other year make model recalls. note: this is the original complaint.....................today the same has happened again, i was greeted by horns blowing and aggressive drivers but was unable to do anything but coast to the next intersection to turn off. nhtsa pleasw do something if possible. this output drive speed sensor is going to get someone killed soon. there are numerous complaints throughout this feed under scattered categories mainly because most do not know what the problem is and dealers cant figure out if the vehicle doesn't throw up a code. i had mine checked when the warning light was on so i would know the issue. unfortunately the dealer couldn't help because we cleared the code. i checked into geeting this fixed but according to the dealer the part is unavailable, and the labor would be absurd if they had to replace. please help!

Bought car used july 2017 from a dealer. has problems starting a few weeks after purchase of not wanting to move. if in heavy traffic doing 5-10 mph on expressway, when traffic finally breaks car will not move, rpm's go up but transmission is still stuck. this is a safety issue that really needs to be addressed as i am seeing a lot of complaints for the same thing. took my car into the dealer due to extended warranty. they were able to replicate what i told them. this is an internal part failure but i am still waiting to hear if my extended warranty will be paying for this. unacceptable that so many have this serious issue which could cause an accident if car does not move on a busy highway or at a stop light. this has happened in heavy stop/go traffic, from a stop light when light changes to green. unless you can find a way to pull off and turn the car off and back on it will not move.

When you step on the gas there is no power. when this happened the air bag light came on and the speedometer. wouldn't work the tack reved up the low tire pressure light came on and the little wrench light came on. the car would not go. now it's going to cost around $3000.00 to fix is what i was told and the car only has 90,000 miles on it. i see a lot of people are having the same issue. ford should issue a recall for these transmissions. before someone gets injured. i was driving down the road when i lost power good thing i could pull over safely.

Wrench light comes on,low air tire light, air bag light on,speedometer quits and no power and hard clunking in the transmission.just bought this, owe $11,000. on this car that is very dangerous to drive, what just ford? drive until we get killed!

Two weeks ago i was driving on nj rout 9 when the transmission sounded like it was in neutral but it wasn't. all the warning lights were on and was able to drive to a safe area and stop. i did not turn the car off and exited the car and tried to open the rear doors and hatch but couldn't. next i turned the car off and waited a few minutes before starting it. when it started, all was fine. the next morning i drove it to a transmission shop without incident. there was only 62,000 miles on it at the time but the warranty expired because it was more than seven years. the oss was replaced at a cost of 750.00. this is not the firs major issue with this vehicle. less than one year ago two coils faulted causing a back feed of too much voltage to the computer causing it to fry. a cost of more than 3,000.00 to repair.

Transmission recalls

Vehicle on the highway feels like im constantly being rear ended upon pressing the gas pedal and accelerating at higher speeds/gear. had a hard thumping bang into gear like the transmission bangs into gear. shifts fine on normal roads but only notice on the highway especially in trafiic with stop go shifting. very scary to drive and after it happens it feels like it has no power accelerating. mechanic cant diagnose due to not having any code stored. seems like many edge owners experience this same issue and cant seem to fix this. hopefully ford has this recall addressed very soon. the only reason why i bought this vehichle was safety and it seems every recall isnt living up to that standard.

Transmission sensors are bad and vehicle has 80,000 miles.

I was driving on the highway and suddenly my speed gauge stoped working. so i pulled off the side of the road and shut it off. turned it back on and put it back into drive it jerked hard and wouldn't move until i floored it then it moved slowly this has happened more than once seems dangerous

Wrench light, dashes on odometer, speedometer on zero, airbag light on. loses the ability to accelerate properly. it has happened 6 times this month, usually on the highway after i've had to slow down with traffic and try to accelerate again. get to the side of the road or a parking lot and shut the car off. restart it all warning lights are gone but still will not accelerate. shift in and out of reverse and drive with very loud knocking and jerking. move car back and forth. restart and repeat multiple times before it resets itself. it never happens by somewhere that can scan it to get a code. as the wrench light goes off and stays off after you restart the car no one can tell me what's wrong. it is extremely frustrating. i am quickly losing faith in ford and their regards for customers safety. good thing i don't live where there are mountains because if i did i am sure i would have been in an accident by now. it has happened twice this week. 5 times were highway 1 was on a busy 4 lane road. it has jerked when shifting around 45 mph for about 3 years now.

While regular driving or when in the process of engaging a stop sign the car engine disengages from the transmission and loose any connection between the engine and transmission. if one steps on the gas the transmission makes a hollowing noise and fails to move, the engine rpm increase with pressing the gas padel but the transmission does not engage as if one is low on transmission fluid. in order for the car to engage into motion one has to shut down the engine complete and then restart the car where after it just run s fine as if nothing happened. we have encountered this situation three times this year. the car has around 58600 miles on it. this is a very dangerous situation to be in specially of one is encouraging and intersection etc and is very scary to drive at times...thank you. we called the ford dealer and they told us they have never heard any thing like this...this all happened on city streets and while the car was moving or when coming to a stop sign.
