We have classified the 111 complaints from 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Dodge is aware of this issue. they have updated the part and there are many customer paid repairs. the control box for the heating and a/c system is defective and breaks at the blend door. when this happens, the blend door no longer works and it disables the defroster and a/c. on cool or cold days, the windshield can suddenly fog up and there is no way to clear the view as air does not blow in that direction. on hot days, the system can not push air out enough to keep the driver from excessive heat. the part number is 68004226ac. this part has been supersession chain of about 4 other numbers as dodge corrected design flaws over the years. i would also note that because this involved a/c and heating, many people do not notify nhtsa of the concern, but it is very well documented and known. it is a very common problem that causes driving issues without being reported.
Front wheel bearing noise/vibration. in motion city, highway, straight, turning instrument cluster failure stationary/ in motion loud vacuum/humming noise from behind glove box stationary/ in motion
Head light switch will not turn lights on an off, does not matter if stationary or in motion.
Turn signals stopped working. got a notice several years ago but the were fine then, not now. apparently the x42 multifunction switch has now gone bad. i have 105,000 miles on truck which is still within the mileage range for coverage. would like dodge to replace this part at no charge for me it is a major safety issue.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 1500. the contact stated that there was a premature failure with the cruise control feature activating or not functioning properly. there was also unintended movement while the vehicle was in gear. the contact was unable to determine if there was an electrical failure that activated the cruise control, causing the vehicle to lunge and accelerate at a high rate of speed. force was applied to the brake pedal when the failure happened. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who checked for dtc, but was unable to replicate and diagnose the failure. there was no repair recommendation from the independent mechanic. additionally, a brake light switch was replaced by the independent mechanic. the dealer (whitten brothers of ashland, 11409 washington hwy, ashland, va 23005, (804) 798-6071) was also unable to determine the cause of the failure. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 14v795000 (electrical system) and 06v038000 (service brakes, hydraulic). the manufacturer issued six tsbs for the electrical system and was notified of the failure. the failure mileage approximately 130,000. *tt
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 1500. while driving various speeds, the low beam headlights became inoperable. the vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuse panel needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 214,552.
The ignition switch gets stuck and will not turn. it starting to happen more frequently now about 3 times per week.
Has an electrical short making the emergency brake light go on and off and a few other electrical things
First problem was one idiot light on the dash indicated the emergency brake was on (and it wasn't). but since the operation of the truck was not an issue, i continued driving for two more months while more and more idiot lights came on each time the vehicle was used, electronically reporting a problem with the vehicle when there wasn't one. finally two months later, the truck would not start at all or even turn over. when the key was turned to start the vehicle, the engine wouldn't even crank. yet all the idiot lights came on which indicated to me it was an electronic problem and not a mechanical one like a bad ignition or bad battery. after repeated attempts, opening and closing the doors electronically with the key fob on and off repeatedly, disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, locking and unlocking the doors manually, and even jiggling the steering wheel, eventually the vehicle would start up completely normally, but with all the idiot lights on. this was erratic and there was no rhyme or reason why it was happening or what caused the problem. the situation continued like this about a week until the engine would not even shut down when the key was turned to the off position. not only that, several times the engine continued running when the key was removed and there was no way to stop the engine from running except sitting in the vehicle and waiting for it to sputter to a stop, which was a colossal waste of time and money and a potentially dangerous situation. after a subsequent appointment at the local dodge dealer here in albuquerque where the vehicle sat in the service bay for a week while the issue was being evaluated, resulting in the issue eventually being diagnosed as a bad tipm, which needed to be replaced at a grossly overpriced cost of $1600, since the part is available online for less than $400.
The dash cluster started with the rpm guage stopped working at about 90,000 miles and now all of it is maxed out full gauges on the whole dash clucter and the speed odomiter still moves but is not correst its about 20mph off. i cant remember but i believe i was driving and noticed the rpm gauge first and weeks later i noticed all the other gauges
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 1500. the contact stated that the abs warning indicator intermittently illuminated. the contact also stated that the rpm gauge remained at zero. the vehicle was taken to autonation chrysler dodge jeep ram katy (21777 katy fwy, katy, tx 77450, (281) 715-6920), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 26,480.
The tipm needs to be replaced. the headlights went out on me driving to work at 3:00 am (in the morning) pitch black out. almost wrecked or died. this is not something acceptable. there jhave been many complaints and nothing is being done. dodge has a problem here and it needs to be fixed now!!!
Dropped truck off for detailing. truck was off. when employee tried to start truck battery was dead. after jumping battery, it started but once driven 50 feet to park, the truck key could be turned off, key removed, but truck still running. could not get it to turn off. electric windows closed themselves, air conditioning would not operate. dash board lights came on. manual brake was set and could be released, but light never went out. truck was about 90 degrees in hawaii heat, so couldn't drive it to dodge dealer with no air and windows inoperable. scary. had it hauled to dealer on truck while it was running. dealer said battery drained and tipm needs replacement, and then further investigation. est. $3,000 already for repairs. in month leading up to this, vehicle had vibration. dealers replaced fuel injector, rear end differential, brake pads and rotors and calipers, all which had passed an inspection just a couple months earlier. cost estimate on these combined $3,000 also. saw recall 05v461000 online for 2006 dodge ram 1500 transfer case. could this be related? i had similar thing happen with my dodge nitro which was on recall.
At first the wipers would stop randomly (while driving in a rainstorm) but i would fiddle with the switch and they would normally come back on. in the last week they basically quit working altogether other than a random stroke here or there. i replaced the wiper/signal control switch on the steering column yesterday thinking it must be worn out. to no avail, the wipers are not working and after researching on the internet, i find that it is a very common problem. people are replacing parts, spending money at service centers and not getting the problem solved. i live in the rainy northwest and i can tell you that it is a big safety issue not being able to see in front of you while navigating i-5 at 70mph at some random point during a trip. this problem started over a year ago but was always a momentary thing and would resolve itself, but it is now a permanent problem and i wish i knew what part replacement would resolve it.
2006 dodge ram 1500. vehicle would shut down while driving. engine would crank but not turn over. mechanic had to tear into engine to find the problem. rods bent, valve sticking, timing chain jump. basically the engine was shot. repair cost $3,000.00. it appears that a lot of other people have the same problem and it cannot be diagnosed without tearing into the engine. also turn signal would blink opposite of where turning. dodge needs to do something about this. these are safety issues! i would like to be reimbursed my costs. mileage on vehicle: 158,000. interesting enough, i have a 2001 dodge ram that has over 307,000 miles on it and never had this problem.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 1500. the contact stated that the steering wheel seized and the vehicle would not move. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 68,000. updated 12/10/15*lj updated 02/02/16*lj updated 03/23/16*lj the consumer requested an update into the investigation. *js *js
Tl* takata recall. the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 1500. the contact received a recall notification for nhtsa campaign numbers: 14v795000 (electrical system) and 15v313000 (air bags). the parts needed for the repair were not available. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the contact had not experienced a failure. parts distribution disconnect.
My truck has been having safety issues over time. most recently having over-heating issues and engine problems since february 2018. the electrical issues happened since last year, dashboard no longer lights up. my one of my front head lights no longer lights up. ive changed it several times and it still goes out. my driver seat beat no longer buckles.
After owning a dodge 1500 2006 mega cab for 4 years had to replace the multi function switch it stopped working had no wipers high beams or signals. 5 years later have the same thing happen seems like an on going problem with these switches. when the don't work make it a safety issue due to no wipers, signals, or high beams...
For more than 1 year, the tachometer in my dodge ram has functioned intermittently. on 3/25/15 i noticed that the driver-side low-beam headlight bulb was out. i replaced the bulb without effect. my mechanic diagnosed the tipm module as the culprit for both the headlight and tachometer failure. he will replace the module, at a cost of roughly $1000, when a replacement can be obtained. it is estimated that it will be at least 4 weeks from the time of diagnosis before that replacement tipm will be available. in the meantime, i must drive my truck with only one headlight and then i will have to pay more than $1000 to have this repaired. *tr

We went for a drive to medora nd. where we spent the night and after we left to return home on hwy 94 when i was pulled over by a state highway patrol. the officer said i hadn't turned my signal on. i told her that i had and while she getting my information i was checking out my signals they would work and then they wouldn't then i turned on the left signal and the right would come on when it turned the right the right worked fine. i turned the four way flasher the left signal would come on. weird. when the officer came back to the truck i told her there is something wrong with my signals. she said that i should take in and have it checked out. so i am now waiting to get it into the dodge dealership. they are really messed up nothing works as it should. i have noticed after doing a search that many dodge pickups have the same issue. i hope this will help encourage a recall for this vehicle. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 1500. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start until after several attempts and had unintended movement. the failure recurred on several occasions. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign numbers: 14v795000 (electrical system) and 15v313000 (air bags). however, the parts needed to do the repairs were unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
owner [xxx] was traveling up a long hill on dirt road when about half way up hill vehicle suddenly quit running (no warning) and "check gage light" (cgl) came on. truck restarted, but would not pull hill. i slowly backed truck down hill without engine -- and started truck on level ground and turned around. truck ran fine the about two miles home , but "check gage light" remained on. (all gages and liquid levels checked normal) the gas gage showed just below half full. after arriving home, i added a gallon of gasoline, but cgl remained on. i called service manager at sloan ford in columbia , tn. who suggested having truck towed to sloan ford to be checked (about 20 miles). when wrecker arrived at my home for truck, the truck started and cgl was off. sloan technicians kept the truck for a week, and the problem never occurred again and has not since. this is very dangerous because of the possibility of the truck stalling suddenly again in fast moving traffic, etc.. i would like to hear of any similar cases , and the possible cause. i consider this unknown mystery potentially very dangerous causing me to be reluctant to drive truck in heavy traffic or long distances. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)*js
It started with the rear passenger window not working, then the locks, then all the windows. they work intermittently however it's becoming more of an issue than not. my truck goes through lamps quickly i replace a headlight at least 2 times a year and several reverse lights over the last 2 years. most recently i noticed the integrated controls on the steering wheel don't t work or work inappropriately. i can no longer turn my radio off with the push of a button. as of last week the interior lights shut off abruptly and don't work with one of my doors. it appears it is just getting worse and worse. *tr
The vehicle is shuttering under braking and while applying directional inputs. all tire pressures are 35psi and are in good shape without cupping. while braking at speeds above 40mph the vehicle will shudder violently. the steering shudders while applying slight directional control. *tr
The passenger side headlight does not turn on even after replacement when the headlight switch is in the on position. dealer has determined that the fault is the tipm (totally integrated power module). per dealer mfg no longer produces the tipm unit. per dealer aftermarket no longer manufactures part either. dealer suggests wrecking yard, however part is a computer based product that still must be reprogrammed by dealer after replacement. this is a safety issue with lighting, and the passenger side headlight will not function without this unit being replaced. *tr
My 2006 dodge ram 1500 mega cab began to have problems with the rear controls, i.e. the door locks, power windows, speakers, dome lights. doors to not lock or unlock nor does the safety auto lock work. window rolled down but not up. vehicle was taken to the place of purchase and discovered that under normal use of the rear door, the wiring harness had several broken wires in it. it was fixed for $340. i believe i now have problems with the passenger side wiring harness. is this a manufacturer defect? how do the wires break inside the harness which are also inside the door and/or body of the truck. i now know of two other people with dodge ram 1500's that are also having the same problem. i have two small children, i should not have to worry about their safety because of faulty wiring!! *tr
I was driving on highway 64 e near williamsburg speed limit on the highway is 70 mph which is the speed limit at which truck turned off on its own. no hard idling, no check engine light came on just turned off on its own. power steering was lost along with the brakes and could not control the truck. had to let it go as it until i impacted in a ditch causing the tire to come off the wheel well, damage to the undercarriage and front driver side bumper. the truck is not safe to drive due to it shutting off and now steers to the left. after some research all dodge rams 2006-2011 have experienced this issue but dodge has not done anything to rectify the problem. this is highly dangerous as it could of resulted in the loss of life if it wasn't because of the amount of soft mulch that braced my impact. i am in the military serving active duty and have come home deployment after deployment and to have it all end because of a faulty vehicle. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 1500. when driving over unleveled land, the vehicle veered to the left or right and was extremely difficult to control the steering wheel. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced all four tires but the failure recurred. the contact was also included in nhtsa campaign id number: 15v313000 (air bags) and was unable to determine when the part would become available to schedule the recall repair. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 91,000. updated 11/25/15*lj the consumer stated while driving on the freeway the transmission popped loudly. the electrical system is unreliable. the turn signals, emergency flashers, high beams, and windshield wipers all operate unintentionally. updated 2/12/16 *js *cn
Wire harness in rear driver side door was found completely severed inside boot from frame to door. effects window, door locks, dome light operation, and speaker. presence of voltage can cause fire if aching occurs. *tr
Will driving on the highway the truck completely shut off and died. i was not able to safely maneuver the to the road and was almost rearended by the vehicle behind me. i had to get out of the truck and push it across 2 lanes of traffic to get it off the road. after further investigation i found that the tipm in 2006 dodge trucks are bad. there has been no recall to date and this is an extreme safety liability. this is the first dodge i have owned and i just purchased the vehicle 3 weeks ago. i will never own another dodge, chrysler or jeep vehicle as long as live. i have researched on the internet through multiple blogs and found that very many people have experienced the same issue some not as fortunate as me and were actually involved in bad car accidents do to this same problem. *tr
I was driving on interstate 90 when my truck suddenly shut down for no reason. no check engine lights, just a total loss of power and the steering locked up. i was able to restart it by throwing it into neutral, but it would not restart in park. this has been happening off and on, and no mechanics can seem to figure it out since it doesn't happen all the time. i'm scared to drive it. i have been on dodgeforum.com, and there are many dodge models/years suffering this problem, but no recall has been issued. this is a major safety issue and i don't know what to do to get it fixed (nor do i have the money to keep taking it in again and again). it "codes out" as an electrical/computer issue of unknown origin that no one has yet been able to fix, despite replaced valves, relays, etc. *tr
Dodge issued an "extended" warranty for the signal really in the steering column. they stated it could break. it really malfunctions- one signaling left it could/would change from signaling left to signaling right. they are aware of this - when i tried to get mine fixed they said that they truck would need to show the malfunction for them to honor the warranty. i feel this should be a recall do to faulty signals (safety issue) i spoke to corporate and they felt the issue was addressed. *tr
Right low beam fails to light. bulb has been replaced. socket is good. failure is in tipm. appears to be a common problem in 06 to 08 dodge trucks. dealer charge $750 to $900 to replace and reprogram tipm unit. this is an extravagant charge for an item that should last the life of the vehicle. *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 15000. the contact was driving 45 mph when the driver's side low beam headlight failed to illuminate properly. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the dealer confirmed that there was a short in the fuse box. the manufacturer was contacted but the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and the current mileages were 112,000.
My blinker lever does not work properly. when i use the left turn signal it started to blink to the right. throughout the rest of the day it would do this intermittently. i was going down a heavy traffic area and used my left turn signal. a car two lanes over slightly behind me starting honking their horn at me because it was attempting to go one lane over to the right. we both tried to go into the middle lane at the same time and i initially thought it was the other driver's fault. i looked at my blinker lever and i did have it in the correct position for a left signal. i then looked at my light display for the blinker and it was flashing to the right. my wife told me about this happening before without me in the vehicle but this i finally got to experience it myself. if it wasnt for my awareness and the other vehicle honking their horn, then we would have collided. ever since that day i experienced it myself, i have noticed it happening more frequently now. sometimes i use the blinker lever and i get no turn signal at all anymore except for pressing the lever harder down or up. i am now more concerned about correct turn signals coming from the lever and it takes away from my situational awareness while driving.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 1500. the contact stated that the turn signals and the four wheel drive failed. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that the total integrated power module failed and needed to be replaced. the dealer stated that the failure could also cause the vehicle to not start. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 43,000.
The turn signal on the vehicle began activating the wrong signal. at times the signal will not work at all. at other times it signals the opposite direction i am attempting to turn. the signal switch also controls my high beams and windshield wipers. both of these are also affected at times by the problem. i am very concerned anyone of these issues could cause a serious accident. *tr
While sitting at a red light turned on the left blinker and after a few seconds the blinker switched to blinking for the right both inside in the dash and outside at the front and rear and the indicator switch was still in the left turn position very dangerous has happened several time since date shown. *tr
The total integrated power module or fuse box on 2006 dodge rams has a known problem of failing. to replace faulty headlight circuit it will cost 1000 dollar because of this tipm. it has a poor design and dodge should address this issue. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 1500. the contact stated that the multi- function switch was defective and the turn signal and the windshield wipers would not function properly. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer and the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vin was not available and the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and the current mileage was 105,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 1500. the contact stated that the vehicle turn signals were activated nd the opposite tail light would flicker. the contact also mentioned that the windshield wipers would not work and when they did, they would only operate on low speed. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the vin was not available and the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and the current mileage was 64,000.
Turn signals and windshield wipers malfunction. if i press down on the turn signal lever, the right turn signal is activated instead of the left. sometimes no turn signal is activated. also, my windshield wipers will stop altogether without warning. these events occur at random and are hard for me to diagnose. i would estimate that ninety-five percent of the time, the turn signals and wipers work properly. however i am worried that a future occurrence may cause an accident. please let me know if there is a known cause, and or fix for this issue. *tr
The turn signal will intermittently malfunction, causing the right indicator to blink though the lever is in the down position which when operational should signal the left indicator. this is a serious safety concern for myself as i have had multiple instances where i'm positioned in the left turn lane attempting to execute a left turn and signaling to oncoming traffic my intentions only to have the right blinker activate and cause traffic to stop abruptly in the lane i just exited. i am not only exposing myself to a rear end collision but i am also exposing the unsuspecting driver being incorrectly signaled to the same potential fate. the inability to caution oncoming traffic of my intentions also creates a potentially hazardous situation in that my turn could startle them causing them to turn sharply or stop abruptly. both could have detrimental impact provided the conditions are less than perfect in a state that commonly has severe winter weather. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 1500. the contact stated that that battery was charged via a jump start. later while the contact was driving 40 mph, all of the instrument panel lights illuminated and the vehicle would only shift into one gear. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the dealer confirmed that the tipm sensor needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 58,725 and the current mileage was 58,730.
When turning on the left turn signal the right one comes on. also sometimes when activating turn signals the wipers will come on as well as the window wash/spray. to correct the problem i have to hit the steering column and it will correct. i have spoken with other ram owners who have had the same experience. *js
When trying to signal a left turn using the multifunction switch on the steering wheel, the right blinkers turn on. *tr
Turn signals malfunction. when signaling for left turn, right signal operates. *tr
My airbag warning light indicates airbag failure. dealership claims it's my fault. i bought it new for the safety features. *tr
