Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 1999 Dodge Ram 1500

The plastic dash broke in several places while driving on a rough road. this also affected the vin plate causing one rivet to be dislodged and causing problems registering it. in some areas it is considered vin tampering even though it was not my fault.

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge ram 1500. while driving on the railroad track at 10 mph, the dashboard shattered. the air bags and the wires were not exposed. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 208,437.

Was driving down the road about 48 mph and the hood flew up and bent my hood hinges.

The air bag warning light stays on all the time. the dash cracked and pieces fell into the electrical systems. the ball joints failed. all around 120,000 to 130,000 miles. the fuel injectors began to fail at 120,000 miles.

I have purchased a 1999 dodge ram 1500 sport. the dash has had a problem in the past and cracked and split. i have replaced it but expect that it will happen again. the problem is when this occurs during an accident, there is the potential for the broken pieces of the brittle plastic to become shrapnel and puncture or become a flying projectile in the cab of the vehicle. if it is caught by the airbag, the speed can be accelerated when the airbag deploys. when will nhtsa issue a recall on the dashboard of these trucks. the bezel and the glovebox's are also splitting as well. when can the recall be expected. i have noted before that this problem exist on nhtsa's website under several categories.. it is a safety issue if the dash cracks or breaks off during an accident. owners are waiting for a recall so that they do not continue to have to pull money out of there pocket to fix repairs on items that should not have a problem.

I was driving down the 131 south about 9 o'clock going about 70 mph and the hood somehow opened and flew back on my windshield and smashed it. hit the brakes and veered off the road. scared the crap out of me took about 20 minutes to bring the hood back down to strap it. the hinges snapped on one side and ripped and bent corners of the hood. this truck has 123k on it with no rust on the hood or mechanisms. if this will not be taken care of free of charge i will not be a happy camper.. i work on cars i know how to lube hood latches i also know how to close hoods. my vin doesn't pull up a recall but this happened as a manufacturers error and i hope this will be professionally taken care of free of charge . before i bought this truck i had checked for recalls. if this were to have popped up on my vin this would have never happened. i'm just glad i could get it off the road safely. *tr

The dash is cracked with sharp plastic pieces all over. *tr

Dash pieces falling into heater vents and other components. *tr

Dash board has cracked and falling apart. the other day i caught my hand on a piece that has curled up with a sharp corner while retrieving my sunglasses i took off to pump gas. *tr

The dashboard was cracking (like every other dodge) and a piece had fallen down and some how grabbed two wires and caused them to touch. lucky for me it smoked before it went up in flames. my girlfriend hurried up and ripped the wires apart. please fix this dodge! yes my truck is old but this is been a known problem since it was new. *tr

1999 dodge ram 1500 pickup, while driving around 35-45 mph usually on a downhill grade the entire vehicle will begin to shake, the only word to describe it is violently and will not subside until you can get the speed below 20mph but you can not just apply the breaks or the shaking become uncontrollable,i have replace most of the suspension(control arms, ball joints ect.)nothing works.this has happened multiple times! i've talked to others and there is a name for it, dodge death wobble. also i am another victim of the dodge dash cancer, in the last couple of years my dash has basically disintegrated....considering bringing a class action lawsuit

99 ram 1500 caught fire while running heater! cause of the fire is the defective dash material falling apart and the insulation fell onto the resistor located on top of the blower motor causing a interior fire. this was confirmed by myself a mechanic for over 30 years and a certified paint and body shop. truck was in mint condition and now a total loss. the truck was in a stationary position in a college parking lot! contacted manufactuer only reply was sorry for your loss. i know of several other vehicles in a 5 mile radius same make and model that the same thing happened too.

A part of the dash of my 1999 dodge ram , dislodged from its position atop of my dash. the dash of the vehicle is cracked and caving in like all dodge dashes this year and model. i was accelerating from a stop on a hill, when a piece dislodged from it position on my dash, and cut me in the left side of my face below my left eye, this could have blinded me, and i know the nhtsa, would never allow a vehicle with large sharp abs plastic pieces flying around the cabin. the abs plastic dash is in horrible condition, it is cracked and fallen in and pieces fly out all the time. i am prepared to sue chrysler corp. if this is not addressed by the nhtsa, thank you *tr

1999 dodge ram 1500 hood latch recall can not open the hood, latch is broken, missing or malfunctioned

My dashboard started developing cracks about a months ago, and they just kept getting worse. currently there is a huge hole in my dashboard exposing wires (radio no longer works properly) and the passenger side airbag. *tr

The dashboard is cracking and it is a safety hazard. *tr

Entire dash is completely cracked and gone. front instrument cluster has nothing to attach to and falls off when i drive. *tr

Dashboard on my 1999 dodge ram has cracked in several places. i just bought the truck 2 months ago and it already had one large crack and has gotten several more since i purchased it. i think dodge needs to be held responsible for this, its a well documented defect. i also believe its a safety hazard. in an accident i don't want to have to worry about plastic from my dashboard turning into shrapnel when the airbag goes off. *tr

Cracked dashboard. its dangerous because the edges are very sharp. i have already change it once but the same problem happened again. suggesting a recall on dodge ram cracked dashboards. *tr

The dash started cracking more and more for no reason at all. now there are chunks of the dash that have fallen behind the dash. this could damage the wiring or circuitry or air bags behind the dash because the pieces that have fallen have very sharp edges. *tr

One day got into vechicle and noticed the dash cracking in several places. notice more cracking everytime i get into vechicle. have not replaced. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge ram 1500. the contact stated that the dashboard on had become brittle and stared to crack. the contact also stated that any time a hand was placed on the dashboard, it fractured. the dealer stated that there was no remedy for the failure. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 53,000. the vin was not available.

1999 dodge ram 1500 quad pick-up. cracking-fractured dashboard and bezel. the dashboard panel has had several long cracks completely transversing and transecting the deck in many areas and many newer ones. what started as a few thin cracks have continued to multiply and widen. now, the entire dash has fractures. pieces have fallen into the interior of the dash among the wiring and ducts leaving large holes on top. the brittle plastic edges are very sharp and leave the surface uneven and weakened. an aftermarket fabric overlay was applied about two years ago at first to conceal cracks, but recent inspection revealed current structural failure condition. the instrument bezel is also cracked in similar area to dash cracks. these weakened components and the state of fracture progressing throughout panel concerns me as to the safety and function of this vehicle in the event of a collision. what affect could it have on the airbag deploying or the structural integrity and function of components attached to the dash panel? loose plastic pieces could become dangerous to occupants and safety equipment or become lodged functionally impairing driveability. internet research has informed me that this in not an isolated case. aftermarket vendors have full dashboard replacement part for ~$400., presumably better abs quality than oem part. the dodge dealer quoted about $900. for labor only! these vendors also carry a moulded abs plastic "dash cap and bezel" overlays to be glued over damaged dashes to "improve appearance", (~$300.), a quick dyi job, but will not solve structural weakness nor continued breakage of original dash from below cap, additionally these overlay "caps" do not have the attachment tabs for airbag or instrument cluster, etc., so the original tabs would have to do the job but may be structurally compromised from cracking also. i have yet to decide which is the best option to take. in any case, the old part is still available for the time being. *tr

Dashboard cracked and fell apart, putting pieces of plastic into the vents. this a dangerous when putting on the vent and having plastic blowing all over. chrysler knows about this defect and has done nothing'. *tr

I am the owner of a 1999 dodge ram 1500. i am having an issue with the dash having multiple severe cracks and breaks. i am afraid that this will affect the air bag development if ever needed. i have done research and have found that this is a very common compliant in these vehicle's and similar models. help is needed! *tr

Dashboard is severely cracked and falling apart on my 1999 dodge ram 1500 truck with over 160,000 miles. pieces of the dash are jagged and can be dangerous. *tr

Typical problems with cracked plastic dashboard on 1999 dodge ram pickups (2) combined with failure of airbags to deploy. both seem to be epidemic in proportion, unfortunately have experienced both. dash is not safe with cracked, jagged plastic edges waiting to impale or slice you, assuming that flying peices wouldnt do even more harm if airbag had gone off. same problem in dash on two personal vehicles, now reluctant to go anywhere in one that wasnt wrecked because airbag probably wont work in it either if something were to happen. i know mine isnt the only one, whover has controlling interest of dodge this month needs to step up and address these issues. ridiculous to think of replacing dash for $800 - 1200 with a part of no better integrity than the one it already had. more ridiculous is the fact they know the airbags failures are an issue on these trucks for years now and have done nothing to remedy the problem. it shouldnt be up to the customer to worry about these two critical safety items . i spent a majority of my working life in the dodge business, have seen it from all angles, now as the irate and disguted owner of two vehicles that leave me with no desire to own/operate. *tr

My 1999 dodge ram 1500 dash is weathered and cracked badly. this seems to be a very common thing among dodge rams of this age. i fear that in a crash situation the dash could be very harmful when dislodged. the edges of the cracks are very sharp and would become airborn very easily in an impact. *tr

1999 dodge ram with major cracks on dashboard and anything that mounts to it. glove box snaps off because it is also mounted and made of the defective plastic. very unsafe if an accident were to occur with jagged sharp plastic pieces. electrical system defects due to the sun beating down on exposed wiring because there is no dashboard to cover it. dodge will not admit to it being a problem that they will recall. it will have to take someone getting severely injured for dodge to maybe reconsider there decision of recalling the dashboard. *tr

I have a 1999 dodge ram 1500 with a severely cracked dash and recently my daughter cut her hand on it. how the ntsb can say that this widespread problem is not a vehicle occupant hazard is beyond me. someone needs to force chrysler corp to fix / replace these dash skins before someone gets seriously hurt.. *tr

Dashboard is breaking up with no apparent cause. *tr

Dash became brittle with large cracks and large pieces of plastic breaking off dash falling in floor board. *tr

1999 dodge dashboard cracked sitting in parking lot on sunny day. *tr

The dashboard suddenly cracked on day without any outside cause. is now in pieces with several sharp edges that could cause injury if in an accident. *tr

My husband and i both have dodge ram 1500 trucks and both dashboards are cracking my husbands is worse and has a hole that is large enough to put your head into. i was driving home from work a few nights ago when mine "exploded" or what sounded like someone fired a gun in the cab of my truck this is very dangerous and there are alot of complaints when is someone going to get off their rearends and do something about this or is it going to take someone wrecking and possibly dying to get chryslers attention and let me just say they are dang lucky that i was stopped when it happened cause if i had wrecked my truck i would have thrown a massive lawsuits on these people and i don't care who it would of hurt this is insane. my best friends son cut his hand open on his dash because of it there is no need this needs to be fixed it is a hazard. hello fix it! *tr

I have a 1999 dodge ram magnum 1500 the dash it cracked in to different places lights on top don't work the push button is broken, and the cup holder tray is broken. *tr

I have a 1999 dodge ram 1500 and the dash is busting into pieces. dodge needs to fix this because it is a safety hazard. i have a 4yr old and a 2 yr old grandkids and don't want them or me to get hit with pieces of the dash. *tr

The whole dashboard is practically gone due to the cracks and dodge not willing to replace it with me paying for it. said it's not a safety issue. even though while driving it is falling apart and rolling around the truck, (dashboard, seats and floor) also being i can see all of the wires under neath and all of it's inners'. that could possible cause a fire. i currently have the vin number taped to he windshield so it doesn't fall off as well. *tr

The dashboard on my truck has broken into many pieces. these pieces have fallen into the passenger side airbag. if these pieces were to be expelled in the event of an airbag deployment, severe injury could result from flying shrapnel. this problem is very prevalent in dodge ram trucks. something must be done. owners should not be required to pay an average of $750 to repair an obvious defect in materials. i personally know 4 people in my town with the exact problem. there are hundreds of complaints that owners have posted online. this dangerous condition must be remediated. *tr

1999 dodge ram 1500 dash is cracking. the cracking started with no action to cause such cracking. the cracking is spreading to a point the entire center section of the dash will soon cave in leaving all wiring behind the dash exposed. this is a known problem with dodge trucks. when are you going to do something about it!!! *tr

1999 dodge ram dashboard cracking all over most of cracks around passenger air bag . incase of accident afraid strong impact will send lose sharp dash pieces onto person inside vehicle. air bag deployment might cause dashboard objects to impale person inside. unknown if water could cause a short in the wiring system to exposed dash causing vehicle to shut off while on highway at speeds of 60mph. very concerned with this defect and afraid to put anyone in vehicle. *tr

1999 ram 1500 dashboard cracked front to back near pass. side airbag. vehicle and interior kept in immaculate condition with only 66k miles and crack appeared without any occurrence. cost of dash replacement prohibitive. *tr

1999 dodge ram 1500 4x4 quad cab. dash has 2 holes where the dash has cracked and fallen thru. i researched this problem and found hundreds of claims on message boards with some people saying that the plastic falling on wires caused shorting out electronics. *tr

Dash cracked and fell apart causing headlight wire to melt and headlights to go out while driving down interstate at 70 mph. *tr

The "dodge death wobble" is for real. while driving my 1999 dodge ram 1500 on the interstate, i went over a small bump in the road. the whole truck began shaking violently. it was extremely hard to control and did not stop shaking until i slowed down to under 20 mph. this is extremely unsafe and dodge should be forced to fix the problem. this problem has occurred more than five times in my truck. *tr

I bought a 1999 dodge ram quad cab brand new in milton fl. the truck currently has 76000 miles and the complete dash assy has broken and cracked into a dozen pieces for no apparent reason. this has become a serious air-bag/ fod hazard if it needs to deploy and could cause injury or even death. dealers and manufacturer refuse to recognize and repair the defected dashes. *tr
