Loud pop and a huge cloud of steam came out of the grill and around the hoods. i could not see through the cloud of steam for a couple of seconds. i was told that this happens often on chrysler autos. ( connector valve ). *tr

The dodge intrepid 2.7 motor is a bad motor, i have already had it rebuilt one time and now it appears that i am going to have to have it done again. everyone i have spoken to about this car tells me the motors are bad. i feel that this needs to be investigated. if i had know this i would not have bought this car. *tr

2000 dodge intrepid 2.7 engine seized, first time auto was in driveway, had to have new crank and rod bearings replace along with timing chain and water pump, second time engine seized while driving on highway and was traveling at a high rate of speed and was almost rear ended, now the engine has to be replaced. the estimated replacement engine is $2,500.00 to $4,000.00 and availability is getting shorter. *tr

I purchased a 1999 dodge intrepid. i have complete service records for the vehicle showing that on avg. the oil was changed every 3000 to 3600 miles. when driving at night during one of the snowfalls, the engine started to putter and eventually fail. i have my receipts showing that the oil was changed just three weeks prior and there was no warning of any issues. i had thee car taken to the dealer by tow the next morning to only be told a few days later that it is going to cost me $6400 to have it repaired? *tr

I have a 99 dodge intrepid with 119k miles on it. i just had my inner tie rod bushing replaced, in the last week my car has died twice on the freeway traveling 60mph, and at a stop light where i could not stop because car was shut off completely. i had to step on parking brake to stop the car. this is very scary driving this death trap. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 dodge intrepid. while driving 35 mph, the driver heard a loud knocking sound coming from the engine compartment in the vehicle. when the contact approached a red light and came to a complete stop, the vehicle suddenly stalled. she attempted to restart the vehicle, but the engine failed to start. the vehicle was towed back to the contact's residence, where it currently remains. two mechanics came to her home and stated that the timing chain needed to be replaced. she was informed that the failure was common for her year, make, and model vehicle. the vehicle has not yet been repaired and is currently parked at the contact's residence. the current and failure mileages were 88,596.

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chrysler intrepid. while driving 55 mph, the contact heard a clunking sound and all power steering ability was lost. the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. she then heard a loud knocking sound coming from the engine compartment. there were no warnings prior to the failures. the contact is in the process of taking the vehicle to the dealer for further inspection. she called the manufacturer and was informed that no compensation would be provided because there were no recalls for the failure. the failure mileage was 108,000.

1999 dodge intrepid stall on a daily bases sometimes it will restart other times you have to wait 30 to 60 mins. it will start and drive then you shut it off it will not restart for 30 to 60 mins sometimes longer. engine also has sludge build up. vehicle has 108000 miles on it. it is the 2.7 liter engine. after reading some of the other complaints i do not understand why there has not been a recall issued. this is a serious problem that can get someone injured or worse. there is no need in trying to fix this problem because you fix one thing and something else is going to go wrong. chrysler needs to step up and fix this problem. *tr

I have changed the oil in the vehicle regularly every 3-4 thousand miles, then on sunday the timing belt tensioner went out and now the repair shop tells me i need a new engine and it's due to the tensioner failing from a sludge build up. i have since found this is very common to the 2.7l engine. now the repair estimate is between five and six thousand dollars. *tr

1999 dodge intrepid 2.7 motor. after replacing the motor in 2006 35 days after buying it lasted till about sept of 2008. had to put in all new timing chain kit. car ran for about a week and then broke down again. had a mechanic look at it and now the right rear rod is shot. with all the money i have put into this car i think i should of just parked it at daimler chrysler and put a sign on it saying what a piece of '!@#$%. cannot get anything for it trading it in all dealers know about this issue and want noting to do with it. *tr

For the past 3 or 4 years now i have been having engine related problems with my car. recently things got worse. my heat will not work unless the car is moving, grayish spoke coming from the exhaust pipe and overheating. i went to a website that was talking about my type of car and the many engine troubles other people are having. the website claimed that i could receive help with getting my car fix due to the many defects with the engines of these cars. the website described everything my car is doing now. *tr

1999 dodge intrepid 2.7 engine with 72,000 miles on it, timing chain jumped, engine is now junk and car sits. this engine has a design defect and dodge should do a recall to replace them. *tr

Our 1999 dodge intrepid with 110,000 miles had engine failure due to a build-up of sludge in the engine. it's a complete loss to us since fixing the timing chain and other parts will ultimately fail because of the crap that remains in the engine! *tr

While driving engine cut out . no warning lights came on, temp. gage was normal. car filled with smoke before i could get to a complete stop. engine was a blaze when i opened the hood to see where the smoke was coming from. i was able to get it put out quickly with an extinguisher. i had recently had oil & filter's changed, the car was fine no knocking from engine. the car is/ can be classified as totaled due to age/mileage on it compared to replacement/repair cost.*tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 dodge intrepid. if the contact does not drive the vehicle before it warms up, it will shut off. once the timing chain cools off, the vehicle will restart. once the vehicle gets warm, it shuts off again. the vehicle was towed a couple of times, but once it was home, it would start again. the dealer stated that the timing chain was the cause of the failure. the repair would cost $1,200. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 94,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 dodge intrepid. while driving 50 mph, he heard a thud and a pinging sound coming from the engine, and then the engine shut off without warning. the contact felt that the crank bearing caused the failure. as of may 16, 2008, the dealer had not inspected or repaired the vehicle. the current and failure mileages were 98,000.

First, the check engine light came on. i took it to the dealer where i got it from to find out that the egr valve needed to be changed, did this. then i drove it for 1 week and the check engine light came on again, took it back to the dealer to find out that there is a problem with the crank shaft and that it will be very costly to have it repaired. all of this happened when i was driving it. the car began to shake and i got very scared. i only had the car for 3 months and in the 3 months all of these problems have erupted. i need some justice in getting these problems addressed so that the car can be fixed without cost to me when checking the internet and finding out that this is a major problem with these cars. it is something that dodge knows that these cars have those problems and they are not honoring helping the owners fix them. *tr

Chrysler intrepid would lose all power while driving. *tr

Engine failure on a 1999 dodge intrepid with the 2.7l engine. *tr

Catastrophic failure of the engine while driving 65 mph on the ohio turnpike. told by two different garages that the engine is blown, rod irreparably bent, must be replaced and that this is a well known problem with the 2.7 engines and that dodge will do nothing about it. told by 5 different mechanics to junk it, not to bother replacing it because they'll just have to put another faulty 2.7 engine in the car. no way this engine should go out in a dangerous situation like highway driving! the car is in my yard right now. *tr

We've only had the car for 10months now and already its a piece of junk. while driving my kids to daycare one day the car just stopped. the steering wheel wouldn't move and the brakes wouldn't work. my husband pulled into a parking lot and put on the emergency brake. he tried to start it up and it wouldn't. he looked under the hood and checked the oil thinking maybe that was the problem. he tried to start it again after he saw there was oil there and the timing chain jump up and broke right threw the covering. we didn't have aaa so his brother called them and had them tow it to a mechanic. that's when we found out the valves were bent causing the motor to be useless. the whole cost of the repairs were an estimate of $3000. we called the finance company and they told us to first call the dealer we bought the car from and they should be able to trade it in for another vehicle. the dealership said it wasn't their problem and that we should have taken the extended warranty. my husband asked why they didn't offer it and they stated they didn't have to. this is very hard on us being that we both work fulltime and have two small children. we can not afford to get this car repaired and keep paying on a car that doesn't serve us any value. *tr

In july of 2007 i bought a 1999 dodge intrepid for my daughter's first car. i paid 3,000.00 for it from an elderly lady in town. within 2 months the timing chain snapped and wound itself around inside the engine and blew through the cam cover. it was towed to a service station and the engine was taken apart. i was told that the 2.7 l engines are noted for overheating causing oil sludge to build up and the timing chains to break. i was also told it would cost me 4400.00 to replace the engine with a used one.*jb updated 12-12-07. *kb updated *jb

The 2.7 v-6 exploded/seized in my 1999 intrepid for the second time in 112k so thats 56k per engine??? chrysler is of no help and will not cover faulty engine! they say sludge cause it-but i changed oil every 3k! this is ridiculous a recall should be mandatory!!!!!! *tr

I have a dodge intrepid that now has a blown engine when it should have lasted much longer. in taking it to the mechanic, i found that the 2.7 engine was the worst one chrysler has made and was a "disposible" engine. my windows do not work, and my fan (air/heat) only works on high. calls to chrysler and any chrysler dealership have remained unanswered and now i look to get maybe $500.00 for the car, if i'm lucky, and now have to get a loan for another car. thanks chrysler.

Complete engine failure, engine seized without warning; able to control vehicle and park on side of road without power steering or brakes; vehicle towed to repair shop, decided not to have engine replaced, vehicle sitting at home deciding on action to take

We have a 99 dodge intrepid and at around 80,000 the engine gave out due to sludge buildup even though we had regular oil changes. we had to replace the engine at $5000.00. while researching the internet, we found that there are websites dedicated to the 99 intrepid all with the same issue. why are they not recalled? *tr
