1999 dodge intrepid 2.7l engine failed due to engine sludge. only had 47,000. no warning. just would not start. had it towed to garage and told the engine is blown. just like thousands of other with the exact same story. have been very diligent about maintenance especially since hearing about this problem from a co-worker whose engine blew at 70,000. had read the average is 63,000. i only had 47,000. took a chance that with good maintenance it wouldn't happen to me. - i lost. hope the good people (they know who they are) at chrysler are sleeping well. i feel sorry for anyone who works for them because they are being made to lie to consumers to cover for their employer. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the engine stalled while driving at 55 mph without warning and did not restart. the vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop were it was determined the engine was filled with sludge build up and water. the independent mechanic recommended replacing the engine. *nm

1999 dodge intrepid es. original engine started knocking and was replaced with short block at 50,162 miles. this engine started knocking and was replaced with another short block at 60,310 miles. now this engine is knocking at 90,413 miles and chrysler will not stand behind it with any warranty. they have quoted me a price of between $5,200 and $5,700 to fix this problem. each of these times car was not drivable and had to be towed in to be fixed. this final time the car had to be towed home because chrysler would not stand behind the problem. *jb

1999 intrepid i took good care of my car and the engine went to pieces costing $7000 to fix. *jb

We have a 1999 dodge intrepid that began to have exhaust smoke. the mechanic suggested changing oil to havoline 10w-40 max. we did so. the car continued to have a smoking exhaust. we have regularly changed the oil before the 3 thousand mile mark. we had about one thousand miles from the last oil change. we have used regular oil changes and synthetic oil changes in the past. approximately 130 miles into a trip with the car set in cruise control between 65 and 70 mph, the engine failed. going up a slight incline, suddenly, the vehicle rpm's shoot up to about 6 thousand, the car lost power and could not be restarted. the incident was on a rather busy highway at the time. the motor had essentially froze, and lost oil as no or little oil was on the oil stick. the car is on a trailer awaiting to go to a local auto shop for repairs. the dodge intrepid was a great car to drive, and we had excellent gasoline mileage. the abrupt failure of the engine to perform on a busy highway is a forebearer of potential problems for the 2.7l engine, and its passengers.

Dt*: the contact stated there are several problems with the vehicle. the first problem is an intermittent failure of the interior lights. the dealer replaced a computer chip and this remedied the problem for a short time. the vehicle occasionally failed to start. the battery was replaced and appeared to remedy the problem. however, there were rust and white spots in the driveway underneath the vehicle where the battery is located. shortly after christmas all the interior lights dimmed and the vehicle lost all power while driving 45mph at night, but normal operation resumed when the vehicle was restarted after several hours. the vehicle has been seen by the dealer several times, but the dealer has never been successful in identifying the underlying electrical problem. lastly, the contact took the vehicle in for an oil change at the local dealer. during the oil change the oil plug was damaged causing a slow leak. the dealer made three attempts at repair, but oil continues to leak from both the top of the engine and underneath. the vehicle received regular service through the local dealer exclusively.

Proper maintenance, all records present. engine started knocking, dealership says need new engine. it's only 65k miles!! car is dangerous to drive cause engine may fail anytime and i get out of control on highway. car parked. contacted chrysler - no help. worst part - all dealers know, but nobody does anything!!! found thousands of complaints on the internet, which leads me here. haven't done any repairs yet. from what i see on internet - engine replacement is a bad option, same engine still fails to soon and unexpectedly! *nm

99 dodge intrepid shut off while driving. almost, caused an accident. handle bar became hard to turn. now i'm been told i need a new motor. the motor on the car is a 2.7 l with 83,000 miles on it. oil change has been done every 3,000 miles. please help do something about this default on these models. thank you. *nm

While driving engine started to knock, then suddenly lost power and engine died. cylinder compression test showed the following cylinder ratings 0-0-15-30-70-100. in the process of replacing engine at a cost of $2000.00 plus labor cost. vin [xxx]. *jb updated 07/17/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Oil light comes on at idle. vehicle only has 115,000 miles on it and in my experience that is a little premature on a car that has had all its maintenance on it since it was new. i am the second owner but i got it from my father in law as a wedding gift. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at 45 mph a knocking noise appeared in the engine. the vehicle was taken to the local dealership for inspection. the dealer determined an oil line to the engine was faulty, and suggested the engine be replaced. routine maintenance was performed on the vehicle.*ak

The engine failed after only 75000 miles.i had just had the the timing chain, oil pump replaced and the engine flushed for oil sludge in the engine a few months before.i have not had the engine replaced yet because it is too expensive to replace. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated in december 2005 the engine failed while driving at 55mph. the vehicle was towed to independent mechanic who determined the main engine bearing had failed. the mechanic determined the engine needed to be rebuilt. the mechanic informed the contact there had been several 2.7 engine failures at approximately 100,000 miles.

At 1145 am, 29 november 2005, i was driving on interstate 675 at about @ 65 mph, when the engine suddenly, without any prior warning, just quit. i made my way across one lane of traffic to the shoulder and came to a complete stop. attempts to restart was unsuccessful. initially, it was thought that the car was out of gas (guage indicated 1/4 of a tank. i called a tow truck and ask that they bring gas. after putting 1 gal of gas in the tank, repeated attempts to start were unsuccessful. the car was towed to dave dennison dodge, col glen highway, dayton, oh. the agent call me at @ 630pm, 29 november 2005, and informed me that they were investigating the problem. but as of that moment, there were computer codes (cam: p0340, crank: p0320), and that in order to start the car, these sensors would have to be changed. i authorized this service, and on 30 november 2005 @ 200pm, the agent informed me that they were unable to start the engine, and that it was defective, and not a candidate for rebuild. estimated cost of a new engine $7,000 dollars. also, they have billed me for the replacement of the sensors, $350.00 estimated. after review of all available info on the internet, it appears there is a history of problems with this engine. on 14 dec 05, crysler's agent, impartial services, made a office of $650. to settle this account. it was not accepted. the complaint was entered into the database: 01 december 2005. *nm

purchased the 1999 dodge intrepid on sep 16, 2005 the car had 77,823 miles . before purchasing the car i did run a car fax on the vehicle and took it to goodyear and had an 11 point check before purchasing the vehicle. the car came with a warranty. nov 26, 05 when the car started a loud knocking noise and immediately shut down. all the oil ran on the ground. it was 10:30 p.m. . we, my daughter and two grandchildren were on a dark parkway the wrecker service took us to a hotel. 1:10 a.m. (cst) when we got to the hotel in elizabethtown. i had to pay someone to come from frankfort to elizabethtown. it only had approximately 3000 miles on it from the time of purchase. i then had it towed back to frankfort (93.03) the warranty company sent the engine but i was still out of $412.00 which was the difference of the claims about for labor of $450.00. during the time i was waiting for my vehicle to be fixed i search the internet and found out there was one thing i did not check at the time of purchase and that was the engine. i found a lot of articles posted that claimed the 2.7 liter engine to be one of the worst chrysler had made. they had the car from november 30 until january 25th. . i did have to purchase an additional extended warranty (150.00) so that i could make sure i was still covered while the car was being fixed. the original warranty at the time of purchase was 4500 miles or 90 days which ever comes first. that warranty expired on 12/21/05. this motor only lasted 81,000 miles. the current engine now is a rebuilt i pray that i get more than 81,000 miles on it. *jb

While driving home from work, going 60 mph, my car stalled (jerked) and within 2 seconds came back on by itself. the next day while driving to work, the car did the same thing. today while driving to thanksgiving dinner at 25 mph, my car stalled completely. i heard no knocking or ticking prior to the stall. i was able to pull off to the side of the road; a hard feat in itself since the power steering went out. after 30 seconds, i was able to restart the car and finish my journey. on the way home from the dinner, traveling at 60 mph, my car stalled again. i was driving down a rural road and just wanted to make it home with my daughter; it was extremely cold outside with 25 mph winds and i was 25 miles from home. i was able to restart the car and continue on; this happened 3 times until the fourth time when the car would not turn over again. i got the car towed home on thanksgiving night at 7:00pm, most certainly ruining someone's holiday! *jb

My dodge intrepid showed no signs of any problems, timely oil changes ,but on this early morning while driving to work on the expressway. the oil light came on and then the check engine light and then sudden engine shut down ,lucky for me that there wasn't any traffic on the road or i would have been in a serious car crash. car towed to auto shop. they said that this type of dodge engine has a serious defect with the engine. the tensioner oil port is too narrow and it gets plugged with oil sludge which causes engine failure. *nm

Dt: contact states while driving to work one morning a light came on. after turning the car off and then back on the light goes off then back on again. the vehicle has been taken to the dealership twice. both times they told her it was her engine. the dealership refuses to repair the vehicle under warranty because they say it's a manufacturer problem. *nm updated 11/29/2005 - *nm

Engine problems with the 2.7l motors. *jb

Early engine failure of 2.7l dodge. intrepid engine, due to sludge build up in the engine. *jb

1999 dodge intrepid. timing chain broke with no warning at idle. towed to garage where they charged me 900.00 for new chain and then it was determined that the engine would need to be replaced or rebuilt due to bent valves. i ended up towing the car home and it sits in my driveway with 72000 miles on it-junk. *nm

I was driving on the highway and just as i was getting on the bridge, the engine on my dodge intrepid malfunctioned. my husband is a certified mechanic and he kept the maintenance up on my vehicle. we were told by the dealership that the sludge buildup was due to us not changing the oil at every 3000 miles. we were told that the cost to repair this problem would start at about $4500. *jb

My timing chain in my 1999 dodge intrepid is about to break, i already replaced the oil sending unit and connector, all these problems indicate engine failure which could lead to injury or death. there are multiple engine parts that are about to fail in my 2.7 engine, this problem needs to be seriously dealt with by the manufacturer. *jb

I was driving my 99 dodge intrepid to work and i was making in the left turn lane as the traffic cleared i began to make my left turn. then all of a sudden, i hear the engine make a terrible sound and the car stopped. i shifted it into neutral and tried to restart to no avail. at that point i had to get out of my car in the middle of the intersection and push it out of the intersection. a couple of guys helped me push it into a 7-11 where i called a tow truck. my mechanic said that the engine needed to be replaced due to sludge. i only purchased this car 3 days prior with the insurance money from when my family was involved in a rollover accident. (we were struck from behind by a an unconscious driver traveling over 100 mph. causing our aerostar to roll and flip with 5 of us in the car including our 18 month old) i got quotes on a new engine and realized that i am not in the financial situation to fix it. so it's been sitting in my garage until i found an article on aol which led me to this site. the engine manufacturer that i spoke with said that there was a problem with the standard chrysler motor and that they made the oil return larger to eliminate the sludge problem. i don't understand how a car engine that dies while driving is allowed to go unresolved. i could've been seriously injured sitting in oncoming traffic. i was lucky but since this is a known problem (i didn't know prior to buying the car otherwise i wouldn't have risked my life driving it).*jb

The problems with my intrepid started with my check engine light coming on and it had stalled out on me a few times. i had my oil changed and had a diagnostic run and was told i had to bring it to a dodge dealer if the light came on again. on friday sept 16th i brought my car to a local dealer. i was told that if i needed to have the cam and crankshaft sensor replaced or the car would most likely leave me on the side of the road. so after paying $400 dollars for my two sensors i drove away happily thinking everything was ok. so, on monday sept 19, 2005 i retrieved my 99 dodge intrepid from the local dealer. on wednesday sept 21 2005, yes two days later, i was on the side of the road with a dead car. on a busy highway i waited with an active toddler and my "fixed car" for two hours. now from everything i have been reading, it seems i do not have a unique situation. my car is right over 80,000 mile my extended warranty was up to 79,000 miles. i have 2 years before it is paid off and do not have enough money to fix/replace the engine or have a down payment for another car and two notes. *nm

My name is [xxx] and i own a 1999 dodge intrepid. i am the second owner of the car purchased with 22,000 miles on it. i kept up with maintenance through the route 4 chrysler/ dodge dealer where i purchased the car (which has a pending class action lawsuit against them). the oil light began to blink so i had it diagnosed at a dodge dealer near piscataway new jersey. i was told that the car was leaking oil in the engine. i advised them that i have specific parking spaces at home and work and never have i had any oil spots under the car. three weeks ago, the car unexpectedly stopped running when i slowed down for a red light. when the light turned green, i started the car and proceeded to turn right and the car died as i was trying to turn. i had it towed to three different auto mechanics and all concluded that the car manufacturer should have issued a recall. the engine is no longer operable and the lowest quote i have found is $6000.00. can you please help me?*jb information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Dt: the contact was driving 1999 dodge intrepid when the car locked, including the steering and the engine. the car came to a stop on the highway. this was the first incident of this kind with this car. also, the contact has a 2000 dodge intrepid and the same thing happened. he reported of having no problems with the car prior to this. no lights came on, and there were no noises or any warning. the dealer said they could not do anything about it because the warranty on the engine expired. *ak

Dt: the caller said timing chain broke while traveling at 30 mph. this happened without warning. there were noises, but he did not know what they were. vehicle was towed to the caller's home. dealer and manufacturer have not been contacted yet.*ak

Dt: the contact stated initially there was gray smoke coming out of the tail pipe. the vehicle was taken to the dealership, and there was a leak in the oil pan. the oil pan was replaced in march 2005. then, on august 31, 2005, the check engine light came on right before the vehicle died. the vehicle was towed to the dealership, and they found the head gaskets blew out. there had been no oil leaks, and the oil had just been changed. the contact was told a that all of the 2.7l engines were bad, and they were unable to fix the contact's vehicle. *ak

Was driving 1999 chrysler intrepid with 2.7 v6 engine, began hearing loud clicking noise. stopped at red light, when light turned green car shut off and would not restart. had it towed to mechanic, and was informed that engine seized due to excessive oil sludge, metal shavings, and timing chain. all responsible for engine failure. estimated cost of repair $5,000. still owe a year of payments on car. hasn't been operating since august 2005. can't afford repair. please contact your state attorney generals office for possible class action lawsuit to recall this defective motor. daimler-chrysler should be held liable for ever manufacturing these engines. have contacted chrysler in reference to problem and admitted they had other complaints about this. it is currently under investigation.*ak *nm

Dt: the contact bought a 1999 dodge intrepid. he had it for 6 months and started hearing a knocking noise about 2 weeks ago. he took it to the mechanic. the mechanic said there was something wrong with the motor, and it was a manufacturing defect. he had bought an extended warranty, but the manufacturer will not cover the expense of putting a used motor in if there was sludge buildup because it was a defect in the motor. if there was no sludge buildup they will cover the cost.*ak

Chrysler 2.7 engine failure. *jb

Dt: while driving the engine blew out. the consumer was driving 40 km when this happened. the consumer said that t5 minutes before this happened the check engine light came on. the mechanic told the consumer that the timing chain slipped due to sludge build up which caused it to hit a rod. previously, a knocking noise come from the engine area. the consumer had taken vehicle to the dealer to have an oil change and the noise was not as loud. there were no injuries. there had been no previous problems with the engine. no fire came from the engine, but there was smoke. *ak

I was driving to work when all of a sudden the car jerked real hard and the engine light came on and the car completely lost power. i coasted over to the side of the highway and tried restarting the car but it would not restart. had car towed to dealership where they found my camshaft was not turning and my timing chain had broke and they were pretty certain it had done extensive damage to the engine. they told me it could be well over $5,000 to get fixed and just for them to even start to investigate how bad the damage was it would cost me at least $600.00. i did have to pay them $102 just for a diagnostic test plus two tow bills. my car only had 85,000 miles on it! what a rip-off! the comment section on the receipt from the dealer said no promises--well no kidding they knew what was going on. *tr

1999 dodge intrepeid--2.7l engine i was driving to work going 70 miles an hour when all of a sudden the car jerked and then the engine light came on and i coasted over to the side of the road. once over to the side of the road, i tried to restart car and it was completely dead. upon having my car towed to the dealership i was told the timing chain had broke and they were pretty sure that it had done extensive damage to the engine, which if i wanted to get it fix would cost me well over $5,000.00. i've also heard they have the worst a/c in the industry in their vehicles which my evaporator condensor went out and i had just paid $1,200.00 to get fixed.

The engine light began to blink at the red light stops. i took it to the chrysler dealership and told them the problem and they changed the oil. a month later the engine light came on and stayed on, so i took it back to the dealer. i was told that the engine was blown and since the car had 74,000 miles it was outside of the warranty and they would not replace it. the cost quoted to replace the engine was $ 7,000. *jb
