While driving down highway timing chain tensioner failed, destroying engine.

Ticking noise coming from my 1999 dodge intrepid 2.7l engine, garage says it's a rod bearing going bad and the engine will seize up.car is not payed off and the serviceman says it will cost approx. $2500.00 for a used engine.what good would it do to put a new engine in and have the same thing happen to that one.i have the car at the garage yet because they are waiting to hear from me on what action they should take. i could put 90 wt. oil into the engine and trade it, but that would make me just as bad as chrysler for ignoring the problems with the 2.7.*ak

I am the owner of 1999 dodge intrepid which has a 2.7l v6 which recently blew up due to oil problems.....

Engine failure in our 99 dodge intrepid at 93,720 miles while driving on highway with husband & our baby in the car. car towed & diagnosed as engine failure, advised would need to replace engine at cost of $4,500. engine not replaced, had to purchase a new car, creating financial hardship. *jb

Dt: the timing chain was getting ready to snap. took vehicle to the dealer because the engine was knocking and making a funny noise. dealer stated that if consumer had to drive much further it would snap while driving it. there was oil sludge built up in the engine. this happened on march 15, 2005.*ak

Engine started making a ticking noise. lost power and seized up due to oil sludge. *jb

I bought this car from my mother which owned the car for little over a year. oil changes and maintenence was on a regular schedule. on my way home from work about a week ago as i was changing lanes the engine suddenly locked up taking away my brakes and power steering and locking up the transmission while doing about 60 mph on the highway changing lanes. i was lucky to avoid a major accident and was able to slide to the side of the road.*ak

Dt*: the contact stated the engine stalled while driving 50 mph. there were no problems with the vehicle prior to this incident. the vehicle was towed to a service dealer who determined the engine needed to be replaced. there was buildup in the oil-pan which caused the rods to knock and the engine to fail.

1999 dodge intrepid. *nm

While driving at 35 mph engine started knocking. consumer took vehicle back to the dealer, and dealer replaced the timing chain, tension span, and an oil pump. consumer drove the vehicle for approximately 10 miles and the engine blew. had it towed back to the dealer. *ak

Oil was replaced every week. vehicle overheated due to defective thermostat. cooling fan motor was replaced over a year ago. smoke came from under the hood, then through the air vents when driving at 25 mph and faster. independent mechanic replaced fan motor. then, vehicle stalled intermittently. but would restart, and was still drivable. *ak

I have a 1999 dodge intrepid. this car had 70000 miles, most of them highway miles. the timing chain broke due to excessive oil sludge. this car has had regular 3000 miles oil changes, and i am finding out this was common occurrence with the 2.7l v6 engine. now, because of the high demand for these engines ,rebuiling costs are in excess fo $4,000, and a new engine runs around $8,000.*ak

The vehicle was pulling out and beginning to accelerate when all of a sudden the engine froze up and stalled. the engine was no longer operable. *jb consumer stated engine blew. *tt

Vehicle was going at 70 mph when unexpectedly the driver heard a clicking noise coming from the engine. results showed there was metal inside which caused it to blow, and no longer operate.*ak

engine failed. the cause has yet to be determined. *ak

I have a 1999 dodge intrepid, which was purchased new by myself. since i am the original owner i know how my car was treated. basically, my car has 120,000 miles on it and has run pretty well all its life. the car started to jerk while accelerating on my way home. i took it to our dodge dealer and was told that the engine was going to fail due to sludge in the engine. the dealer stated that this was a known problem and that chryler wouldnt do anything about it. they had gotten many complaints on these engines.*ak

While driving 55 mph vehicle stalled. driver was not able to restart vehicle, and it was towed to a garage for inspection, and mechanic determined that the engine needed to be replaced. *ak

While driving 30 mph, the driver heard a loud knocking noise coming from the front. suddenly, the vehicle stalled. the driver tried to restart the vehicle and was able to do so. the vehicle was taken to a garage for inspection. the mechanic informed the driver that the engine needed to be replaced. please provide further details. *jb

I bought a used 1999 dodge intrepid 10-01-03 with 74570 miles. in february 2005 the oil light started coming on when i came to a complete stop. i contacted dodge and was told there might be a sludge problems and they could try to correct it but would make no promises. i contacted rt clapp where they said that they could work on the car but with that engine it would be better if i could trade it. i would be pouring money down the drain. i called jasper engines and they said they made many rebuilt engines for the 2.7 model and that would be 4200.00. i have read on several websites that this 2.7 engine has many safety issues. i am disabled and cannot afford to trade the car. i am terrified to drive it and it has been sitting in my driveway for over a month now. if i were driving it and it seized up on my i am afraid i would have a heart attack. one if my disabilities is congestive heart failure. i only put 6800 miles on this car in the 18 months that i have owned it. the engine has not failed yet but the oil light coming on when coming to a stop when the oil is full is one of the first indications that the engine is about to go. i wanted to lodge my complaint against chrysler for making a bad engine and not doing anything about it to protect the safety of the cars owners. driving on the interstate and having the engine blow is one day going to make a hugh accident but it will not be me because i am too terrified to ever drive this car again and could not try to sell a lemon to another individual.*ak

The consumer states the engine has failed without warning. the dealer states it's due to sludge build up. the cause has yet to be determined. *nm the engine currently displayed a knocking sound after the repair. the consumer was advised that the motor needs replacing. *sc *jb

2.7 liter engine went out, costing lots of $$$$ to get fixed. *ak

Like soooo many others my dodge intrepid 2.7l engine starting knocking, then while driving to work in the middle of the road stopped! my husband had to push the vehiclle off the road but was unable to completely get it out of an intersection alone! we had it towed to a dodge dealership where they informed us that we needed a new engine. after i did some research and found that there are thousands of us out there with the same problem (sludge build up in the engine) that casues the engine to blow with no warning. no only a saftey hazard but it is very coslty to repair.the dealership wants 6500 to repair it and the car is not even worth that. so we are still paying on a car that dosen't run...because the engine is defective!*ak

I was driving to work one evening when the car just lost all power and died. i was almost hit by another car. a few young men had to help me push my car on the side of the road. i work third shift and it was late at night so i was very scared. i got a tow truck to tow the car back to the house and the next day i had a mechanic checked it out and he said the engine was no good. the car only had 63,000 miles and it was serviced on time. i got a second mechanic to check it and the result was the same. *jb

The driver was driving, without warning the vehicle stalled. the driver was able to pull over and tried to restart, but was unable. the driver had the vehicle towed to the dealer. the mechanic informed the driver that the engine needed replacement. please provided additional information. *nm

Engine seized without warning at 89,000 miles, and not knowing what had happened i took it to a local dodge dealership to have them look at it to find out what was wrong, and they didn't even have to look at it, they told me exactly what happened and why without even looking. i had the look at it anyway, and they came back with there original response "the engine seized to oil sludge, a common problem with this engine". *jb

While driving at approximately 50 mph the driver heard a loud knocking sound and the engine stalled. the vehicle was towed to the dealer. the dealer informed the consumer that there was engine sludge which caused the engine to seize. *ak *nm

(1) it started with the engine heating with any reason then blue smoke coming from the muffler and eventually it started to make a load noise. (2) it has a black oily sludge on the engine block, the oil pump is damaged and the valves. (3) i've replaced the oil pump, water pump and the air conditioning compresor. *ak

Blown out engine in 1999 dodge intrepid. *ak

1999 dodge intrepid 2.7l engine failed at 75,100 mi. car engine started knocking and stalling while driving to work. dealer said $5-7 thousand to fix. i took it to an independent service facility. they said there is known problem with this engine and sludge buildup and it also sounded like the timing chain. i'm still waiting on their estimate to fix this as they can't get to it for several days. in the meantime i am out of a vehicle. i've sent a customer complaint to chrysler and have not received a response from them.

I was driving my 1999 dodge intrepid yesterday to work when all of the sudden i heard a small rattle. it became louder and louder until the engine oil light started flickering off/on. after that the engine light stayed on and the car died on the side of the road. chesterfield dodge told me i had experienced complete engine failure and could do nothing about it except replace the engine for 5500.00 plus install. it is sitting there now waiting to be towed and scrapped. the motor is 2.7l/v6. *jb

was driving 1999 dodge intrepid with 66,000 miles on !-4 in florida about 65 mph. the engine, a 2.7, without warning blew up. i lost power steering and the brakes were hard to use. there was no dodge dealer in the nearest town. i had to walk to the nearest exit. a chevrolet dealer replaced the motor for $7100. after researching. i have found this is a common problem with the 2.7 engine. the car has had regular maintenace. i was lucky that there was a shoulder to pull off the road and have room to coast to a stop. old engine was used as a core.there was no sludge in oil cap. there was no oil light warning. *ak

Dodge intrepid 1999, numerous problems with regard to it's engine. *bf the consumer experienced a knocking noise coming from the engine. the dealer informed the consumer the engine was no longer any good and it needed to be replaced. *jb

While driving approximately 65 mph, engine stalled. was able to pull over avoiding accidents. when taken to get serviced, was told that the engine froze. *nm

Consumer was driving approximately 35 mph. when coming to a stop, the engine stalled. vehicle then would not restart. when taken to get serviced, it was determined to be due to oil fledge. *nm

Comer was driving 50 mph and heard a clicking sound, and the motor stalled, vehicle lost power steering, and all the lights in the dashboard just lit up. consumer called a tow truck and had the vehicle taken to a service center. mechanic indicated that the engine locked up. there was plenty of oil in the engine. consumer was told that the engine needed to be replaced. *ak the service engine soon (ses) light did not illuminate to warn there was a problem with the engine. *tt

While driving my dodge intrepid home the engine quit causing me to pull over to the side of the road with no steering and very little braking. i was able to jump start the engine and begin my trip home again. the engine quit again and had trouble steering car off the road with also no brakes. now the engine will not start due to being locked up. i have changed the oil regularly and maintained the car in good condition. i have had to replace the transmission sensors at 50,000 miles due to failure. the manufacturer service mechanics knew exactly what the problem was when described over the phone about the transmission and the engine. the transmission had a failure again at 100,000 miles. this is terrible for a 99 model car that has only a 100,000 miles. the engine is locked up and now i have no transportation to travel back and forth to work. i have more problems with this car since i bought it. *nm

While driving between 45-50 mph, suddenly there was a clicking/tapping noise coming from the engine, followed by the vehicle starting to lose power. the consumer immediately pulled over to the side of the road and had the vehicle towed to a repair shop. the engine blew because it threw a rod bearing. *jb

While driving on the highway a ticking noise was heard from the engine. then, vehicle lost power, and the check engine light came on . vehicle was towed to consumer's home and inspected by a mechanic, who determined that the bearing on the crank shaft had gone bad. the entire engine needed to be replaced. *ak

2.7 liter engine in dodge intrepid, failing. have maintained vehicle, vehicle presently in garage awaiting service. i am expecting the dealership to deny warranty claim due to engine sludge which is common with this engine. will no longer allow wife and kids to be in vehicle, fear of vehicle accident due to premature engine failure.car taken in for repair oct. 2004, dealer replaced rod bearings. knocking noise still present, car currently at different dealership.*ak

I was driving on an errand to tucson arizona which is 65 miles from my home. i stopped at a stop light and the car engine died on me in the middle of a busy intersection without even a warning light coming on. i do regular maintanence on the vehicle, and do predrive checks on the vehicle before i go on long distance trips. the dealership where i bought the vehicle used from told me it would cost $6300 to replace the engine. i do not have $6300 to replace an engine in a vehicle worth about $7000. *ak

While driving, the vehicle had a loud knock. the consumer drove to the dealer the following day and on the way home the vehicle stopped. the engine was defective. *jb

The vehicle was on the road when all of a sudden the driver heard a loud knock coming from the engine and causing it to stall. manufacturer will be notified by consumer.*ak

The engine in my car needs to be replaced. cylinder 3 and 6 have rods that will eventually go through the engine. it is a 2.7 liter 6 cylinder dodge intrepid. i have contacted the company and they will not respond to my inquiries. i have done some research on this engine and there seems to be quite a few owners who have the same problem. i took it to ferris state university's automotive program and the instructor told us that those engines are notorious for doing that. he explained that it is a manufacturer defect because the hole that allows the oil to flow through to the cylinders is not large enough so the engine starves for oil which causes rod bearings to go bad. chrysler needs to recall all vehicles with this type of engine because it is not right that they continue to let them stay on the road when they know there is a problem. i have a 3 year old to take care of and i still owe almost 4000$ for the car and to have the engine rebuilt will cost 4700$. *ak

Was stopping at a red light and the engine shut off after a brief damaging noise. i have been told the timing belt blew and destroyed the engine. vehicle was left on busy roadway with occupants inside until a tow truck could arrive. police were called to avoid a rear end collision. *ak every mechanic i have called has recommended replacing the engine. no action has been taken. too expensive.

The 2.7l engine was making a pinging noise while driving at any speed. consumer did some research on the website and believed the problem was due to engine sludge build up. dealer was notified.*ak

Vehicle shut down while consumer was sitting at a stop light. vehicle was towed, and the engine was found to be defective.*ak

I also own a 1999 dodge intrepid with the notorious 2.7 almost blown engine, due to oil sludge. the was well maintained with regular oil changes. the car has only 76k miles. for a couple of months the car would sound like a diesel for a very short time and disappear. i called the dealer and inquired if there had been any similar complaints or problems. they replied they knew of none. i even had the car in another repair shop one day and they did not know what could have caused the sound i complained about, because it disappeared before i got there. just a couple of weeks ago the sound reappeared suddenly after 4 months of nothing. the shop owner could not believe his ears when i drove up left the car running and went in to get him. he found that the hydraulic tensioner that holds the timing chains in place needed replaced, but when he took the front cover off the motor he found it filled with sludge. i was lucky that the motor had not blown yet, but i face the expense of having it rebuilt or replaced. i still have the car, but i had to go replace it with another car. this was an added expense i was not planning on. r miller, delaware. *jb

While driving 25 mph the engine stalled without warning. as a result the vehicle coasted to a stop. the cause has not been determined. *jb engine locked, no oil to #2 piston, heads warped. pulled engine down to check engine knocking noise. engine had spun bearing on rod bearing. replaced complete engine assembly. *bf *nm

While driving 55 mph vehicle stalled due to engine sludge. the vehicle was towed. dealership repaired the problem. *ak the consumer stated that the vehicle engine was damaged at 50000 miles. engine was rebuilt. *tc

While driving 65 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the consumer tried to restart the vehicle but was not able to do so. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection. the mechanic informed the consumer that the engine needed to be replaced. please provide further details. *jb
