Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2005 Dodge Durango

I own a 2005 dodge durango slt v8 hemi. my vehicle stalls without warning will driving 60mph on the freeway. it will also randomly stall if making a turn. it will start back up sometime and other times it takes awhile to start back up. this is very dangerous and chrysler need to recall this vehicle and correct this problem before someone dies. *tr

I have two safety concerns about our 2005 dodge durango. first, during the end of fuel filling, as the vapor lock on the pump engages and shuts the valve to the pump off, gas immediately spews from the filler neck, as if the tank depressurized. it has happened to me three (3) times now. this is a major safety concern! the result could cause a fire resulting in serious injury or worse! the other issue that i have a major concern with is that the vehicle stalls during low speed turning. if at an intersection and attempting a turn, the vehicle may stall and cause an accident. this has happened to me more than ten (10) times in the eight months that we have owned the vehicle. this too is a major concern as it can also cause serious injury or worse to not only myself, wife, young children, and others that may become involved in an accident if it where to happen! i have reported the issues to dodge and their response to me is to have the vehicle diagnosed. i do plan on doing this however, while researching the issues online, i have found a many numbers of vehicles (same year, make, and model) with the exact same issues. this leads me to believe that this is not isolated and should be cause for safety concerns throughout the nation for the vehicles/owners. *tr

My 05 dodge durango with 5.7 hemi is stalling with no warning. no power steering, no power brakes, no check lights come on, the radio remains on but thats it. i can put in park or nuteral and it comes back on. this normally happens when i am turning, this is so dangerous!! searching the web i have found there are quite a few people out there experiencing the same problem i think its time dodge figures this out before something terrible happens. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that the vehicle would stall intermittently while driving at various speeds. when the vehicle stalled, the interior lights and windshield wipers would fail if in use. however, the radio continued to operate as normal. in addition, when the contact attempted to refuel the vehicle, gasoline would spew back out and onto the ground. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. no repairs were performed. the current mileage was 63,628 and the failure mileage was 48,000.

Car is stalling when at a stop or slow speeds. it just dies with no warning. it is getting worse. i will not sit at a stop without shutting off. it seems to me it is the nhtsa ea05018 problem. i think the recall needs to be reopened. *tr

First, the cruise control stopped working. then, the speedometer and odometer quit working when the abs, parking brake, check engine, and traction control lights all came on. took it to the dealer to repair the instrument cluster recall, and was told that it needs a new abs control module and wiring harness. the wiring harness is completely melted, probably because of a short in the control module - at least that's what i was told at the dealership. the wiring harness is on a national backorder until late september, so i am without abs brakes, traction control, and a speedometer/odometer until then. *tr

I have a 2005 dodge durango that will just shut off on me without any warning. i almost got rear-ended the other day when i tried to turn on my road and i had no power steering or power. i called dodge dealership and they said without any lights coming on they can not get a code. i have read and read about hundreds of people with this same problem who own a 2005 dodge durango..and dodge isn't doing anything about it. i have a 6 year old daughter who rides with me everyday and it is not safe for me or her and something needs to be done now!! *tr

While driving at 45 miles per hour in a rain storm the electrical system suffered a catastrophic failure. engine would stop and then restart, all powered equipment would turn off and then back on. every light in instrument panel would go off and then back on again. vehicle was unresponsive to cycling of the ignition switch. the vehicle would turn off while the ignition switch was in the full run position. the vehicle would continue to run when ignition switch was moved to the off position. after being powered off for a long time and with the key completely removed from the ignition, the instrument panel and any accessories (radio, ac, etc) which had been powered on before shutdown, would re-activate. *ln

Alarm/key fob fails to activate due to defect in soldering of battery holder to circuit board. found many people with the same problem on carcomplaints.com. the battery holder in 2004-2006 dodge keys comes apart from the circuit board, making the key not work, and stranding you where ever you happen to be. when you open the key, you see the battery holder out of where it was attached to the 'motherboard', and can push it back in and make the key work, but it's only a temp fix as it keeps coming apart. *tr

My 2005 dodge durango v8 hemi, several months back, started losing all power while driving including power steering and power brakes. i would have to try and coast to a stop without being involved in or causing an accident. the durango would then restart and run fine. this has been increasing in frequency over the past couple of months with it occuring twice yesterday, march 29,2010. this is becoming a serious safety hazard and will undoubtedly cause an accident. it has occured while turning, slowing down for traffic, and while accelerating through an interesction. i have called dodge on several occasions with no answer as to what the problem is or that they would fix it, as it is an obvious safety concern. there are many sites with other owners voicing this same thing happening to them and also list that this was brought to dodge's attention in the past and they didnt feel that it was important enough for them to issue a recall to get the problem fixed. i only hope it doesn't cost soimeone's life for them to admit that it is of concern to them

While driving at 55 miles per hour in a rain storm the windshield wiper suffered a catastrophic failure. *ln

Engine turns off randomly usually at a lower speed but not always. *tr

When putting gas into the tank of my vehicle, it spits gas back out. at the same time, we are getting surges in the speed of the engine, seems to be more frequently when speeding up from low rpm. the internet is full of instances of this same problem, but my dealer says no recall pertaining to this matter. they are replacing the gas tank at no charge, but say that i must pay for a diagnosis and a replacement sensor for the surging. they claim that neither problem is a recall, nor covered in my expensive extended warranty. i am being charged close to $300, including rental car. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated the vehicle stalled, while driving at lower speeds. in addition, the failure occurred while driving over rough road conditions. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 50,000. the vin was not provided.

I own a 2005 dodge durango limited the dealer sold to me & installed a starting system and a navigation system. i have had my car shut off while driving down the highway and my car just doesn't start. it turns over but no start. the dealer fixed it many times and now it is out of warranty so my mechanic is trying to fix it and states that the dealer told him they should have never placed those in the same car together. he also said lincoln towncars are having the same issue. *tr

Recently, toyota has had problems with spontaneous acceleration. it appears that both foot pedal and electronics are at fault. i believe the problem may be more widespread. i own a 2005 dodge durango which suffered from spontaneous acceleration. the "brain" had to be replaced twice. once when i got the suv and last year. it would be interesting if the electronic computer part or parts were made by the same manufacturer. in both of my cases it could have been deadly. please pass this on so it will not get lost in the "shuffle". *tr

On 4 occasions my vehicle has shut off while trying to turn on a intersection at a low speed. all fluids are in the correct levels and no fault lights appear. the vehicle does start normally after a second. the incidents are sporadic however are concerning because it could cause an accident. this appears to be a common issue with this type of vehicle an many have complained. the dealer can't do anything because they cannot recreate the problem and computer does not show fault code. i tried contacting dodge customer service about it but they are not willing to help.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer for recall repairs. prior to the repairs, the vehicle was performing normally. when she retrieved the vehicle from the dealer, the battery failed. the dealer recharged the battery, but the vehicle stalled while the contact was driving home. she attempted to re-charge the battery at a local service station, but was unsuccessful. the vehicle was towed back to the dealer and they stated that she needed to purchase a replacement battery. the contact was able to borrow a battery from the dealer. the current and failure mileages were less than 59,000. updated 8/7/09 *cn the vehicle was left at a local store and towed the next day. the consumer stated the vehicle was normal before she took it the dealership. updated 08/11/09.*jb

Pertaining to the 2005 dodge durango: while driving this vehicle, it just shuts off, this has happened several times. when this happens, you loose powersteering, which puts you in a dangerous situation. i'm not sure if its electrical or mechanical related. i have visited a few recall sites and various people from all over are having this problem. the vehicle has been checked out for many things to include spark plugs. i think it may be the electric control module, but that's just an opinion. i feel this situation needs to be addressed by dodge before someone gets hurt or even killed because of this defect. *tr

I have a 2005 dodge durango that i recently started having problems with. problem 1: when filling the fuel tank the pump does not automatically shut off and fuel comes shooting out the top of the tank. problem 2: when driving at night the instrument panel flickers on and off. i checked the nhtsa.gov website and found that there were recalls issued for both of these issues that i've experienced so i took my car to the dealer. the dealer said my vin is not covered under the recall and that i have to call chrysler. i contacted chrysler and was told that the dealer is unwilling to work for any discounts and that because my car is out of the warranty period they will not pay for any services. in both recall notices it states that these issues are both fire hazards and i don't feel that i should have to pay $1700 out of my own pocket to resolve them, as these are known issues with 2005 dodge durangos. please help! *tr

Engine stalls randomly and in different driving conditions but mostly when coming to a stop rpm will drop off all the sudden then engine dies it also looses power when accelerating and surges pretty hard when this happens this has happened twice since i bought the vehicle on 2/25/09 first time was on 3/11/09 and the second time was 3/21/09. *tr

Friday morning june 27th while my wife was driving to work, she noticed smoke coming from the driver side panel below the dashboard. within minutes the vehicle was filled with smoke and fire spread from the dashboard to the rear of the suv completely burning it until the fireman put it out. *tr

2005 dodge durango with 5.7 hemi engine will shut off without warning while driving. does not throw a code so the dealer can't find the problem. most times it will re-start but sometimes takes several attempts before restarting. sometimes it happens more than once a day, sometimes a couple of times a week....need help to get dodge/chrysler to do something about the problem. bought new in 2005 and didn't start having trouble until 2008. *tr

I have a 2005 dodge durango limited w/ hemi. we purchased this vehicle used w/ 26,000 miles on it a year and 4 months ago. i have experienced several problems w/ it: broken remote keys-the remote locking devices on both keys are now dysfunctional due to the solder that holds the battery in place breaking. i cannot lock/unlock vehicle from outside and when it is locked from inside prior to exiting, upon re-entry, the alarm sounds until key is put into ignition and vehicle is started. the amount of money to replace these keys is outrageous!!!! windows shaking while rolled down-anytime any of the windows are rolled down they shake violently w/ in their casing. there is also quite a bit of wind noise heard when windows are rolled up completely. had dealership look at it but they could not determine there was a problem. navigation system-the main knob has become almost dysfunctional. it seems that it is sticking out farther than it once had. with out use of this knob, the entire nav system is virtually unusable. seatbelt cover-drivers side plastic dust cover where seatbelt goes into seat came off and the plastic around it has a crack in it. there is quite alot of dust building up inside the seatbelt mechanism. liftgate screws falling out-this has happened a dozen times regardless of how many times they are tightened. it is the screws that hold the plastic on the inside of the liftgate-where the closing handles are located. broken pin on accelerator pedal-dealer calling this a "push nut pin" and it is what attaches the accelerator to the arm. dealership certain it is a part malfunction however chrysler refusing to repair. underside steering wheel radio control-the left button that changes the pre-set radio stations as well as which disk is playing in the cd changer is sticking. if you just barely touch it the stations/cd's change continuously. in order to get it to stop, you must depress it very hard while moving it back and forth. *tr

I was contacted by daimler chrysler, stating my 2005 dodge durango was the subject of a recall, and to schedule an appointment with our dealer. i scheduled the appoint for the recall and for additional maintenance. i investigated the recalls, and found 2: a potential instrument panel failure, and a problem with fuel spilling out of the inlet during refueling. i scheduled the appointment, and off the durango on 2-26-08. the next day, mike (from our dealer) called and said that the recall had already been performed. he stated that daimler chrysler sometimes made mistakes like this with recalls. he also said that the only recall the durango was eligible for was for the issue with the instrument panel, and the the recall for the issue with the inlet valve did not apply to vehicles made after 10-12-2004 - ours was made 10-15-05. i explained to mike that the durango had the identical problem that was the subject of the recall. just a few weeks ago, my wife was doused with gas as she filled the durango - gas escapes frequently when filling up. mike said that there was nothing he could do, except perform the repair - the exact same thing the recall was for, but at my expense, and that i should contact daimler chyrysler to see if they would do anything for me. i contacted daimlerchrysler twice after i found documentation on the nhtsa website, from daimlerchrysler to nhtsa, stating that all durangos from vin 5f500001 to 5f535219 would be recalled. the vin on my durango is 5f529730 - well within the recall range. the letter i found on nhtsa's website (dated 3-18-2005) from stephan j speth (director, vehicle compliance) to ms. kathleen c. demeter (acting associate administrator, safety assurance) at nhtsa, indicating a "date range" for affected vehicles. daimler chrylser assigned a reference number (17265274), but stated there was nothing they would do to correct the problem. i believe they have a responsibility to perform the recall. nhtsa campaign number: 05v-034. *tr

My 2005 5.7l dodge durango slt has stalled approx. 5 times since my purchase in 2005. each time varied in driving, i.e., a few times occurred during decreased speeds in turns, others during normal highway speeds (65+). each time, all controls, i.e. steering, electronics, ceased functioning without warning. no accidents yet but anticipate this will occur as close calls each time this has occurred. vehicle was stopped and put into park, then restarted without problem. our durango computer has been flashed previously but stalling still occurred.*cn

After getting my recall done reference # go7 instrument cluster. i began having problems with my windshield wiper, it would not turn on ii turn to your website and found nhtsa campaign id number: 06v067000. it seems this was the problem i am having! i call chrysler and they told me that there is no such thing of this recall. i told them my problem but to no avail. they can't help me. they told me i should contact the dealership and get a diagnostic. but the dealership wants to charge me $65.00 per hour for diagnostics. i don't want to pay for something that there is a potential recall on it. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that she did not receive a recall notice regarding the electrical system: instrument panel. after 40 minutes of exiting her vehicle, it caught fire. the fire originated from the instrumental panel. the police and fire departments arrived at the scene and a police report was filed. the recall number was unknown. the current and failure mileages were 52,000.

Bought car in 2007 had to replace one key because of electronics at 180 dollars each, 2009 changed car battery had to reset keys at 80 dollars, 2011 keys need replaced again at 130 dollars each. bad design so they can keep fleasing you for money. also had fuel tank replaced, brake lines rubbed together causing hole in line and loss of brakes, dust cover on drivers seat belt broke off, screws in back tail gate keep loosening and falling out. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving 25 mph, the vehicle began to smoke and overheat without warning. the dealer was notified and stated that the cylinder was not getting any compression and caused the engine to fail. recall number 07v092000 (electrical system: instrument panel) was found. the current and failure mileages were 47,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while parked in the driveway the vehicle burst into flames. the fire investigator stated that an electrical malfunction caused the fire. approximately three thousand miles prior to the fire, the vehicle would not start. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they reprogrammed the keys. the failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 33,000. returned usps, 2nd attempt made 08/28/07 failed. *lj

2005 dodge durango (4.7 l v8) stalls in an unexpected manner while driving. stalls have occured while driving on at least 5 occasions. stalls have occurred in normal street traffic and on the highway. had a dodge dealership look at the vehicle in may 2007. vehicle has stalled twice since the dealership looked at it. the vehicle most recently stalled today on i-90 (june 10, 2007).

I purchased a 2005 dodge durango brand new,and since i had this vehicle it has been given me problems. there were recalls on this vehicle. the vehicle idled very hard, and it shut off when it idled hard, while sitting at a traffic light or when turning to go around a ramp. when shutting off the wheel locked, and i could not control the car. recently, the care shut off on the new jersey turnpike and a tractor trailer truck was behind me. luckily, i was in the outer lane and managed to steer the car to the shoulder before the truck could hit me and my family. this was very dangerous. last incident happened on une 10, 2007. every time i took the car to the dealer they determined there was no problem. *ak

2/27/07 purchases: 2/27/07 problem: engine light serviced: 3/06/07 repaired: egr valve, 3/09/07 problem: engine light serviced: 3/12/07 repaired: ignition coil. 4/06/07 problem: engine light/vehicle cut off/ serviced: 4/17/07 repaired: short out cam and crankshaft sensor. due to vehicle having rough idle , needle jumping/vehicle shaking, vehicle shut down at stop lights. (5/01/07) returned vehicle to service due to shutting down when backing up/rough idle. (5/17/07) vehicle shut down on the expressway in front of a semi-truck, i didn't know if had shut down until the wheel became difficult to control. i coasted up the exit ramp and the vehicle start right up. dealership requested to take the vehicle to another service center for repairs. (5/18/07) took vehicle a dodge dealership, in which ,they stated that the vehicle has intermittent problems which were hard to detect. diagnoses of the problem would be difficult. also, stated this was the second vehicle in their service department with the same problems. to no avail they found nothing.*ak

Tl*- the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact noticed the overhead lights illuminated upon entering the vehicle. while driving 10 mph three lights illuminated on the instrument panel, and then noticed smoke coming from behind the steering wheel. also, the contact noticed fire coming from underneath the instrument panel. the fire destroyed the vehicle. the insurance investigator informed the contact that the fire started in the instrument panel. there was recall 07v092000 regarding the instrument panel. the current and failure mileage were 60, 000.*ak

While driving my 2005 dodge durango, the radio shuts off, the rpm's go to zero (as if the vehicle has lost all power and shutting off), and all of the gauges on the instrument cluster go crazy. prior to this happening the vehicle was in the shop because of the abs & brake light kept coming on, and a constant dinging noise (like the sound when a car door is left open with the key in the ignition) we were told there was nothing wrong and that our key chain was to heavy. *nm

Tl*- please refer to nhtsa action number : ea05018 .the contact purchased a 2005 dodge durango on or about march 2005 with an odometer reading of 10 miles. the contact stated that on february 15, 2007 a fire began on the vehicle's dashboard. the vehicle was driven early in the morning, then parked for 2 hours. the contact went out a second time, and that waswhen the fire was noticed. the vehicle was towed to don weirs reno dodge on february 16, 2007. an investigator from dodge was ask to inspect the vehicle. the vehicle was stored at the dealer from february 16, 2007 to the present. the contact received a call from the investigator on february 20, 2007 regarding the fire. a representative from daimler chrysler called on february 26,2007 who said that it was not an aftermarket defect, but a manufacturing defect and would be covered under the warranty. the contact was faxed a letter from daimler chrysler, in which daimler chrysler agreed cover the cost of the repairs to the vehicle if the contact agreed to not to pursue this matter in court after repairs were done, and to exclude daimler chrysler of any additional liability. the contact filed a complaint against daimler chrysler because of this letter. the current and failure mileage were both 35,000.*ak

We purchased a used 2005 dodge durango in january of this year. we were driving one day a few weeks after we purchased it and noticed that the interior lights did not go out after the doors were closed. i think there is a type of "switch" which shuts off the electrical systems in the vehicle after (i believe) 15 minutes, so each time we shut off the vehicle the lights stayed on a few minutes. after about 4 days of this, i started the vehicle up one day and it did not start. we had the vehicle towed and were told the instrument cluster had to be replaced. it took a few days to have the work done since the service center said they do not typically keep the parts in stock for a 2005 since it is not a problem generally seen on a newer vehicle. what i have read online with the recent recall was "the company said if drivers notice problems with the interior lights, they should take their vehicles to a dealer for inspection. in some cases, the interior lights will not properly dim after the doors are closed." well, that is exactly the problem we have, but our vehicle is not part of the recall. *jb

The 2005 durango stalls during acceleration and at highway speeds with no warning, it will not start again until vehicle is completely stopped even if shifted into neutral. the ecm sets no codes and normally vehicle run fine and everything checks out ok. this can be dangerous because suddenly your vehicle is powerless in the middle of six lanes of traffic and your looking for a safe place to go so you can stop and start it again. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. on february 1, 2007, the contact's vehicle had been parked for two hours in his garage when his house began filling up with smoke. he went to his garage and found both his vehicle and garage in flames. the garage burned down and the vehicle was destroyed. the contact has pictures and can get a fire report. the manufacturer sent an investigator to take pictures. afterwards, they informed the contact that they were not responsible because a defect was not the cause of the fire. on may 14, 2007, the contact received safety recall notice # 07v092000 (electrical system: instrument panel). the purchase date and engine size were unavailable. the current and failure mileages were 26,000. updated 07/06/07. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving 75 mph, the vehicle shuts off without warning. the contact is able to restart the vehicle immediately after the failure. the contact stated that the malfunction indicator light is constantly illuminated. the dealer stated that the vehicle shuts off due to the o2 sensor and the malfunction indicator light. the vehicle was unable to be repaired because the manufacturer has not provided a resolution. the current mileage is 31,000 and failure mileage was 26,000. updated 07/06/07 *tr

The complaint i have is about the wireless remote key for the 2005 dodge durango. the remote stopped working after a short period of time. i notified the dealer and i was advised i needed to buy a new key. i opened the battery compartment and noticed one of the contacts from the battery to the actual circuit board had broken off. i fixed that problem by using adhesive buy now the key is not programmed. dealership wants to charge to solve that. i did a little research and found out i am not the only one with the problem. there is a lot of people that had the same issue. that is why i believe the wireless remote keys are defective and something must be done about it. thank you. if you have any questions feel free to contact me. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while traveling various speeds on normal road conditions, the vehicle stalled and the steering became inoperable. the vehicle was taken in a local dealer who referred the contact to another dealer because the problem could not duplicated. the vehicle was taken to another dealer, who determined there was a misfire in the engine. the dealer was not specific and could not determine the true cause of the problem, but replaced the spark plugs and coils. the type of coils replaced was unknown. the problems persisted on a busy highway during traffic, when the engine stalled almost causing an accident. the vehicle was currently at the dealer for further examination. the vehicle was not included in any recall due to the vin, however the dealer did not know which component was the cause of the problem.*ak

Drove home from a trip and parked our 2005 dodge durango in our garage at 11:30 pm and awoke at 5:00 am to smoke alarm to find the inside of our truck on fire. had our car windows been down, my 2 sons, my husband and myself would be dead. it looks as if something overheated behind the steering wheel inside the dash and ignited. *jb

Purchase a vehicle from howard wislon chrysler of flowwod , mississippi, and a vehicle with full warranty, they sold the truck knowing it a had a defect , the truck stalls out while drive in the middle of speed while driving to the point where my disable a daughter and i almost got hit from the back by a eighteen wheeler truck and killed if it had been from a officer helping us realize the truck was stopping on it's own. i have complained to chrysler itself and they have blown me off , and stated they cannot fix the problem the truck has been in the service department more than i have owned it. to the dealer and chrysler my children and i was nor hurt so that to them is not a problem. *jb

I own an 05 dodge durango purchased in jan 06. since aug 06 i have had intermittent problems with it cutting off while i am driving. it seems to occur when i am slowing down to make a turn. it's happened 5 times since then. no lights come on on the dashboard and i lose my power steering. i have to come to a complete stop, put the car in park and then it will restart. i've had it at the dealer twice and since they can't "duplicate" the problem, they can't fix it. the first time i took it in, they said my throttle body needed cleaning, of course, this was not something my warranty covered, but, i paid for it in the hopes of fixing the problem. i am concerned that next time it stalls, i will either rear end someone or someone will hit me. *nm

I have 2 2005 dodge durango's one was in a head on collision and was totaled it help save my life. so i purchased the same auto again but red, the problem with this one is that it will stall out for no reason. it will start again but it continues to do the same thing i have had it at the dealership more than 4 times for the same thing this time twice in one week and they had to keep it over the holiday weekend. you buy a new auto and expect it to be safe and run. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle suddenly stalled in traffic on four occasions. speed does not appear to play a role, as it was different each time. this is the fourth incident within one year. there was no warring prior to each incident. the vehicle restarted immediately. the dealership has been unable to duplicate the problem.
