Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2005 Dodge Durango

While driving, svc awd light comes on, then goes out. no problem there but that is only the beginning. in a slow hard turn on reverse, the wheels seem to bind up with an uncontrolled lock into four wheel drive. with my research into this problem, i discovered many other people with the exact same problem. 72 pages of the same complaint !! some even tell the of car shifting into 4 wheel drive on the highway slowing the car into dangerously slow speed . i traced complaints back to 2004 , all deal with the transfer case shift motor or the wiring controlling it. also related to the a/c connection, or the awd, 4 high and 4 low lock switch. i experienced the shift into four wheel drive in slow speed turning and backing but to have it shift into 4 lo lock during driving has me afraid to drive it at all. over 350 complaints of the same problem, with only one web site sounds like a major design problem that dodge has not addressed at all. fyi i bought this car used at koch 33 dealer and they did not disclose the problem in advanced. thanks rich

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that the four wheel drive engaged independently. also, when the vehicle was slowed down, the steering wheel seized. the failures were experienced several times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who believed that the four wheel drive engaged independently due to an electrical switch failure. the contact inspected the vehicle himself and believed that the four wheel drive engaged independently due to a failure in the wiring harness behind the dashboard. the contact also stated that the heater blower motor failed. the heater blower motor remained on the high setting. the contact replaced the heater panel himself, but it did not correct the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 167,000.

It switches into 4 high and 4 low all by its self. the vehicle can be off for hours and it still will do it. the scary thing is it will shift like that while delivering as well. very dangerous, and lucky there was not another vehicle either coming towards me or behind me, cuz i lost control of the vehicle and i an sure a incoming car would of kill everyone. this needs to be fix. there is hound to be a law suit and i read three is alot of other and you people know it.. this will be on you people,

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. after the contact closed the vehicle door, the dome light remained illuminated. the vehicle was taken to allen mello dodge (13 marman dr, nashua, nh) where it was diagnosed that the instrument cluster was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact was informed by the dealer that the part needed to repair the vehicle per nhtsa campaign number: 07v095200 (electrical system) may no longer be available from the manufacturer. the failure mileage was 120,000.

It is a awd car but sometime the 4lo light comes on with a very annoying noise from the bottom of the car or engine, then the speed being slowed down significantly, the car becomes hard to keep going. the streaking sound and the speed being reduced like the break being stepped on abrubtly makes me pull over for safety.

My service 4 wheel drive light came on and my suv and my car started jerking unexpectedly while in traffic, as if it were changing or shifting gears, which could have caused an accident. when i took it to dodge, i was told that the front control module for c1404, needed to be replaced, and that the part alone would cost $1200.00. i am reading many articles about issues with the 4wd in this make, model, of vehicle and want to know if there is a recall on this and if not there should be, before someone is killed because of this issue (if not already)

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road, waited a few minutes, and resumed driving. the failure recurred numerous times. the contact called quirk chrysler jeep ram of bangor (307 hogan rd, bangor, me 04401, phone number: (207) 945-9458) and was informed to contact dodge customer care. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact called the manufacturer and was informed that the vehicle was out of warranty, and did not offer further assistance. the approximate failure mileage was 141,141.

Started with the ser 4 wheel drive light coming on intermitly ..then passenger side window intermitly stops working ..next the transfer case motor switches all by its self into 4 wheel lock and 4 wheel lo with no lights on the dash..when its in 4 wheel lock its very hard to drive and turning almost imposable this creates a very unsafe condition when your driving when its in lock you can barely get out of a parking spot or get turned around even more scary on the road when it shifts all by its self ..many times no lights on the dash to tell you it has changed ...other time while driving at highway speeds the 4 lock of 4 lo lights come on ..very dangerous ...sometime the key fob also makes the transfer case motor change when the truck is not even running

I vehicle likes to turn its 4 wheel drive on while i am making turns. also when it is parked you can hear the 4 wheel drive system making clicking noises. this happens when the vehicle is turned off and the key is not in the ignition. i have read thousands of complaints about this same problem. i see that some people have spent thousands of dollars to fix this problem and it does not. some people have stated while driving on a highway or road it has kicked in and caused traffic accidents, some serious and some minors. when will this problem be addresses? will it take someone dying to get an investigation started? i have had this problem for a couple of years and thank god, nothing has happen to me or my family when this issues happens.

For no reason the vehicle shuts off with no warning. no lights on the dash or anything, shuts off and no steering. not safe to drive. it has happened while driving and while sitting at a light, no warning signs. acts fine, both times during city street driving.

Takata recall. i took my vehicle in to have this recall fixed and was told it was repaired. then i received another notice and was informed by the dealership they would contact me when they had the parts. i was never contacted and moved but still have the same number. now i receive all this information about the danger and this vehicle is my wife and children's primary source of transportation. i fear for their lives while driving this vehicle, especially after watching the video. also during the same time frame of this recall, my electronics on the vehicle began acting erratically. they still do occasionally but we have to drive it nonetheless. the instrument cluster will go dead with no lights or gauges working, the a.c. will blow heat only or stop, the alarm goes off on its on, etc. all this while it is still running and drivable but you don't know how fast! right now it's acting somewhat normal. i really feel i was wronged in buying this vehicle! the date i listed was the first time it happened but it has happened several times after that up to last month.

Vehicle switches into 4x4 with vehicle turned off chrysler says they don't know what's wrong but if you go to car gurus .com lots and lots of people have this problem and no one will help us cause is transfer case motor engages on its own causing our car to lock 4x4 and yes vehicle will skid around corners and is dangerus

While traveling on i-90 eastbound at 70 mph my 05 dodge durango suddenly lost momentum and the engine rpm went up. i managed to get to the shoulder safely. the engine was still running and the vehicle still in gear but the vehicle failed to move. the vehicle was towed to a repair facility just off the next closest exit. examination showed the transmission fluid was okay, the repair facility found the torque converter had been stripped out. this vehicle had been displaying problems with the transfer case shifting without touching the selector switch. also you could hear the transfer case motor activating while unlocking the doors ??? research has shown that there are many such incidences of problems with this vehicle. repair costs me $1403. but the vehicle is still doing the same thing. there are reports of people changing out parts with no fix. i feel this vehicle is unsafe and the dealer should recall before someone gets killed. repair facility said my torque converter had been totally stripped out as a result of whatever caused the problem. i am disheartened as i like this vehicle but can't afford to spend thousands of dollars chasing a fix that many including dealers have been unable to resolve. whatever assistance would be greatly appreciated. see https://www.cargurus.com/cars/discussion-t4148_ds482593

The front heat/ac controls stop working. it doesn't matter rather the heat is on or the ac is on. it will randomly stop blowing air. when this happens the wires under the passenger side dash (up under the glove box) get extremely hot and smells like burning plastic. when my mechanic looked into it the white plastic pigtail part was half melted away. he replaced it but a few months later we had to replace it again with the same issue. i didn't drive this vehicle for about 6 months after it was repaired. now after 2 days of driving it since it was sitting it has gone out again.

As i was driving home, all of the dash warning/service lights came on. at the same time, my turn signals, brake lights, windshield wipers, hazard lights, and all gauges malfunctioned. i believe this to be an issue with the "front control module".

The vehicle doesn't want to drive like the brake is on this happens even worse when trying to turn.the service 4 wheel drive light is on.i got on a forum and was blown away by all the people having the same problem.some say electrical some say transfer case.they was 2005 or all in this area.the vehicle only has 69000 miles on it.

Tire pressure light will not go off, after tires have been aired and checked by tire place.

Seat belt is locked but light comes on as if it was not on. i have to undo, and reapply for light to go off. radio will not work at times. radio repair guy said i needed a new amplifier. one day it just starts playing, but when i stopped to get gas, the car would not start. after battery was replaced, the cargo lamp stays on if i open my rear hatch. will only go off if i closed it twice.

This vehicle routinely stalls and shuts off while drive, decelaration, coasting, and also while at a complete stop. i have already had one accident due to this issue and has become increasingly dangerous to drive.

When in motion, vehicle's rpm will drop to 0 (randomly, no way to tell when coming), along with a loss of power steering and various electronics within the vehicle. problem is usually fixed by restarting vehicle, but it has been very dangerous - especially on the highway. has happened at least 5 times during my ownership of the vehicle (4 years)

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the interior lights remained illuminated and would not shut off. the contact stated that a day later the vehicles instrument panel failed. the contact also mentioned an odor of burning wires was present in the cabin of the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was previously serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 07v092000 (electrical system) but the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown due to the instrument panel failure.

Interior lights won't go off. smell burning wires inside the vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. on several occasions, the vehicle idled excessively. the contact stated that the check engine warning indicator illuminated intermittently. while stopped at several traffic lights and construction work zones, the accelerator pedal was depressed and the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was taken to napleton chrysler jeep dodge ram (located at 1460 e osceola pkwy, kissimmee, fl 34744, (855) 437-9197) to be diagnosed; however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. the vehicle was also taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not contacted or made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while attempting to start the vehicle, the ignition failed without warning. the failure was persistent. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the tipm failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact replaced several parts to repair the failure prior to the current diagnostic. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.

My vehicle will kick into 4x4 lo with no warning or notice. happens on tight turns. seems this is a huge problem on 2004-2005 dodge druango.

I am experiencing the same exact issues with my 2005 dodge durango as other posts. the 4lo and svc 4wd warning lights on the instrument panel periodically flash on and off, and frequently when i slow down to pull into a parking spot or driveway i hear a clunking sound and the transmission actually shifts on its own into 4 wheel drive. the wheels will lock and when i accelerate it actually jerks the car and drags the tires. recently i heard a loud thump as if something broke and it shifted into 4wd on its own. in addition, when i shut the car off it will occasionally start clicking as if its locking and unlocking the car doors. this will continue for 10-15 seconds before stopping. i have had the vehicle into the local dodge dealer numerous times for service but they claim to have not heard of the problem before and seem baffled as to what's causing it. clearly this is not an isolated incident because of the hundreds of reports i've seen from people experiencing the same issues. after waiting 6 weeks for an aftermarket instrument panel the dealer replaced it, but that made absolutely no difference and i am still experiencing the same exact issues as before.

Vehicle keep trying to shift into 4 wheel drive mode by itself while parked, driving and when vehicle is turned off

The car sv 4d light comes on. and when driving the car shifts into 4wd which causes the car to stall and almost caused me my life and family life on the highway.

When filling the gas tank, a large amount of fuel always shoots out of the filler neck and spills onto vehicle, ground, and objects around vehicle. also the vehicle does not come with tpms, however the tpms warning light on the instrument panel stays on all the time. also if the rear lift gate is opened the cargo light indicator on the instrument panel stays on until you open and close the lift gate a total of two times.

In my 05 durango, the 4wd keeps clicking on and off randomly. i could be driving down the highway or just turned the car off. the engine has not been able to go in drive, reverse, etc. i had a mechanic look at the transmission, spending a ton of unnecessary money when the whole time the 4wd has been stuck in neutral. dodge knows about the problem, why isn't there a recall? apparently the switching into 4lo at high speeds can cause serious damages -- even death to me or my children or other innocent people on the highway. what am i supposed to do????

Opened the drivers door after a storm and observed standing water in the drivers side floorboard. tried to start but the battery was dead. (daily driver w battery @ 1yr old). placed battery on a charger and was able to start motor. engine was reving between idle and 1500 rpm rapidly and would not respond to throttle inputs. instrument cluster lights all on and navigation display was on but not legible. looked for the source of the water, and it appears to be coming from around the drivers side front pillar area and leaking down the inside kick panel.

On my vehicle the 4 wheel drive will automatically engage while i am driving. it has switched into 4lo a few times which almost caused a serious accident. there is also a clicking noise that sounds like the gears are switching back and forth, when i use the remote lock/unlock on the key fob. the dodge dealership did not know why it was happening and said maybe i should replace the transfer case but they did not know for sure if that would do anything. so i lost over $100 and got nothing out of it. i took it to my mechanic who said that unplugging at the transfer case would stop the issue but the 4 lo and other switches would not work and the service 4x4 light would remain on. since i have to drive i had him do this and it did fix the problem but now i don't have any 4 wheel drive which really sucks living in utah with all the snow. the fact that the vehicle would switch into 4 lo when i was doing 70 mph on the freeway is a major safety concern. there needs to be a recall on this problem. *tr

About six months ago 4lo light started flashing then when i shut the car off i can hear shifting into and out of 4wd. had it checked for codes and they found none. now as i was driving it locked into 4lo vehicle made a popping sound and stalled.right in the middle of a busy intersection. i was able to start it back up but now i can't drive this car due to fear of it doing this again.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving various speeds, the vehicle goes into wheel high mode svc 4wd. the rear end was in low gear, but the front gear was high. the vehicle shifted into either gear randomly and caused the vehicle to hop. while driving at approximately 60 mph, the engine stalled. the vehicle was able to be restarted. the failure occurred intermittently. the manufacturer was notified. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 195,000.

My car repeatedly cuts off while i am driving. i noticed that other people have the same issue with the same model as i have which a 2005 dodge durango. i did my research and it was identified by dodge as a low maneuver issue. one incident that happens a few days ago was that my vehicle shut off on a curve while merging on the highway. i am very luck that it was a car behind me and they were not going fast. my car shut off and i lose control of the steering because of the loss of power. i have to put the car in park and then try to start the vehicle. i would like this issue addressed i have complained about this since 2006.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving at 45 mph, the vehicle stalled as several warning lights illuminated. the contact was unable to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 147,793.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while the vehicle was parked, the interior lights illuminated continuously. the vehicle was serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 07v092000 (electrical system), but the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. the contact mentioned that the lights remained illuminated after the recall repair was performed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 145,000.

My durango has started to engage into 4 wheel drive on its own. it does this when parked and when driving. it now is stuck in four wheel drive and cannot drive on the pavement. this seems to me to be a serious problem and should be recalled by dodge.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving at 35 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact stated that various warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 151,000. the vin was not available.

Ac/heater blower resistor and harness burn out leaving the vehicle with no heater or cool air. i have had to have this now replaced once by the dealership, once by my brother who is a mechanic that teachers at unoh in ohio, and the last couple of time by my husband and myself. the part is not real costley but the labor is for a dealership to fix it. dodge/fiat need to find a solution.

I have not had a accident thank god. i brought my 2005 dodge durango february2, 2015. make a long story short with in the past 2 month i have had to have my tank dropped 3 times now i have to have it dropped again so this will be the forth time &my truck wil not start &the pump is not coming on. i got a letter about the airbags recalls, my question is have it ever been a recall on the computer or the electrical system for this suv? i think my whole fuel system is messed up cause when i go to fill it up gas come shotting back out the tank at me & i see it was a recall on that & i have not recieved my letter to go have it checked out. please please please help

Hi, i could not access the odometer fraud section so here is my question. how is it that the dept of motor vehicle in tallahassee that issues title do not do anything about odometer rollback, i thought that was illegal. i purchased an suv and much later i discovered there is a discrepancy in the odometer from carfax history. doesn't this issue show up when the dmv is doing a title for a new owner when they enter the vin and mileage from the bill of sale? why is this illegality allowed to happen, do they just issue a title for a stolen vehicle? *tr

Driving on i-43 to work, the 4 wheel lo light flashed and went out. a few minutes later it flashed again, except this time it locked in 4 wheel lo at 70 mph during morning rush hour traffic. this caused the vehicle to rapidly slow down from 70 mph to 25 mph. i had check the vehicle codes with no errors. on the way home, i had to stop several times to cycle the transfer case, in order to disengage the 4 wheel lo. reading many blogs on the internet, this seems to be an issue with 2004 through 2007 dodge 4 wheel drive vehicles. mechanic states that without a code, they will just start replacing parts until the correct one is found. this could take $2000.00 to $3000.00. *tr

This has happened on multiple occasions!!!!! it happens at any speed, the truck will lose all power and shut off without warning. i can't steer or do anything but put the truck in park and restart the truck. i have taken it in the be looked at and nothing can be figured out as it does it randomly. i have four children and this last time we were turning and the truck just shut off while another vehicle was coming down the street. i have researched this and sees others are having the same issue. i have had some of the suggestions done such as replacing the egr valve and flushing the system. i need an answer as i do not feel safe!!!!!!!!!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled several times without warning. the contact had to make several attempts to get the vehicle to restart. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who replaced the ignition switch, but the failure continued. the contact stated that the vehicle continued to hesitate and stall randomly. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy. the vin and failure mileage were not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was able to be restarted. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000. in addition, the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v313000 (air bags) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the contact had not experienced an air bag failure.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving at 55 mph, the instrument panel lights failed and the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 130,200.

Transfer case motor engages while driving going from awd to four wheel lo. this can potentially cause a very bad accident. 4wlo light flickers and transfer case motor engages even with vehicle shut off. *tr

Was driving on the freeway. the service 4wd light started flashing, and the transmission shifted into 4lo by itself. all efforts to shift back out of 4lo failed. had the vehicle towed. service shop diagnosed transfer case as the problem, and replaced it. the problem persists. vehicle continues to shift into 4lo by itself which impacts the ability to turn the vehicle. *tr

Vehicle would high idle then when put in gear it would not take gas and would continue to run even after putting it in park and turning the key off and taking it out. this is a very serious problem i would like an investigation to see if anyone else has had this same problem. i would like a response please this scares me alot. *tr
