Recently reported FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE problems on 2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer

I was driving home one night from work on a back road in south carolina going 35mph when my headlights shut off and the car completly stalled, i quickly turned on my hazard lights on to warn the oncoming traffic the car that was coming up on me had to swerve into the grass because the area was so dark he didnt see my hazard lights until he got close to me. this isnt the first time this has happen there really should be a recall on these 2002 trail blazer because this is not safe at all im worried my child will be in the truck with me and it happens again. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, a strong odor of fuel emitted inside of the vehicle. the vehicle also stalled without warning. additionally, the gear lever would not secure into park until after numerous attempts. upon restarting, the vehicle began to function normally. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who tightened the shift cable. the vehicle was not repaired for the additional defects. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 160,000.

Very strong gasoline smell! the whole garage and entrance to my kitchen strongly smelled of gasoline one morning when i went out to take my children to school. i took it in immediately and the stealership informed me that the fuel tank filler neck had broken loose from the tank and the fuel pressure regulator and seals were leaking, the exact same problem that gm had a recall on for the trailblazer ext. i notified gm about the issue asking for any help at all with the situation, but since my trailblazer was not under the recall they were unable to do anything for me. it is a sad day when peoples lives are being threatened by poorly designed vehicles all in the name of making a buck. you can go on line all day long and find the same complaints from gm customers experiencing the same problem i am. with the publicity they've had in the news lately and the current lawsuits against them, we all know how gm feels about helping people who have bought their defective products. they would just as soon sweep the problem under the rug while innocent people die because of their dishonesty. would someone with enough power and $$$ please step up and force them to take responsibility for the problems they have created? *js

My 2002 chevy trailblazer started running sluggish and getting terrible gas mileage, then i started smelling gas while i was driving, pulled over and there was gas pouring out of the tank underneath the car! very dangerous! *tr

I just purchased the 2002 chevy trailblazer from masano auto retailers, as is, in reading, pennsylvania. upon stopping at a gas station because i noticed the rear lights were not working, i smelled gas, and upon looking under the vehicle i saw gas dripping down from the bottom of the gas tank. i could not see exactly where the gas is leaking from, and only noticed that gas was running down the gas tank. i went online and noticed that this is a common problem with the 2002 chevy trailblazer, and wondered why such a dangerous issue that could result in a catastrophe was not the subject of a recall. really! its ok to allow people to drive in cities and park near homes, schools and businesses with leaking gas tanks, not to mention the environment for crying out loud. where is the recall? *tr

When you stand by suv you smell gas fumes bad. *tr

Lately, and intermittently, when the gas tank is 1/2 full or less and a sharp turn is made, the gas gauge goes to e, the low gas light comes on and the car will not go more than 20 mph as if it is losing power. it's most scary when it occurs making a turn onto freeway entrance ramp and i am trying to get power to enter moving traffic. typically, i have to pull over, turn the car off and restart to get the car to run normal. *tr

My car has been swallowing gas. it uses 1 gallon per 5 or 6 miles, it doesn't accelerate, and it keeps turning off when i slow down, and i have to re-start it. it has become very unsafe for me and all the drivers around me. i took to the dealer. they said they checked it, and they replaced only one little gas cap. they said that it will take care of the problem. it didn't. i still have the same problem of high fuel burning. i took it back to the dealer. they checked again. they said the fuel tank needs to be replaced and they want to charge me $1027 to replace the fuel tank. several mechanics told me that there was recall on fuel system on my type of vehicles. i shared the recall information with the dealer, but they said that there is not recall. i have checked recalls on line, and have checked more. others drivers have had similar problem. the complaints can be found in http://www.mycarstats.com/reports/chevrolet/trailblazer/2002/complaints.aspx please assist in anyway you can. my contact information is [xxx] and my name is [xxx]. thank you! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I was driving home from work and started hearing the trucks undercarriage start to rattle and grind on the bumps of the road. i had a sudden loss of power on engine and it wouldnt respond to my pressing on the gas. i believed that i had gas in the truck because the gauge read half full and apparently i was out of gas. so i proceeded to pull into a gas station and as soon as we filled up, the truck would not start! i saw that my check engine light was on and had to ask for a jumpstart to get it started again. at another time and date again the truck went dead, i asked for a jumpstart and the vehicle would not respond. i now had to buy a new battery because the car damaged the original battery and now with the new battery installed my car starts but will not stay on without me pressing on the gas while in park gear. i believe something may be defective with the electrical gauges, fuel delivery system, and suspension. *tr

Slight gas leak developed shortly into a major total failure of the fuel system, lines and tank.

Fuel smell in cab of vehicle: started on 20 june 2011, vehicle has 165k miles. other problem includes parking lights needing replaced very frequently. *tr

Pretty said to know that chevrolet makes all this makes all this money and wont reopen their recalls when they didn't replace parts on vehicles to begin with maybe next time should have went foreign instead of american for all these years. *tr

When i drive my chevrolet trailblazer, the gas gauge is all over. i can have a full tank one minute, and half a mile down the road have 3/4 of a tank. also it does the same thing when it has a quarter of a tank, it will say it has 1/4 of a tank, and a mile down the road it just drops and the low fuel light comes on. also i can park the vehicle with about 3/8 of a tank, and start it later, and it says empty, and the low fuel light is on. we also have a 2004 gmc envoy that does the same thing. this has been an issue for both vehicles the entire time we have owned them. both were bought in 2010. this occurs every tank of gas, and the actions are not always the exact same, so it is hard to tell if we actually need gas or not, sometimes they are actually almost out other times the have approximately 1/4 of a tank left. we have not done anything to correct the issue because we do not know what is causing it. *tr

I feel that even if you have had a recall issue once and the situation continues to happen then it needs to be fixed until the problem is solved i have contact gm several time and nothing has been done to ratify my problem with the windshield wipers and the 4 wheel drive and several other recall issues this is sad i say we need a class action law suit i am not one to take legal action but for people that have this kind of money and to not fix their problem that they put out on the roads for us to drive safely is shameful. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that while parked, there was a strong odor of gasoline fuel outside of the vehicle. the contact did not detect a fuel leak. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where a fuel leak was detected after the fuel tank was removed. the technician stated that the fuel tank module would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000. ...updated 04-03-13 *bf

Parked trailblazer in garage last night and this morning smelled gas in garage. underneath the truck was a puddle of gasoline that had leaked out. it seams to be leaking from below the rear seat and middle of the vehicle. i am reading about many similar problems and concerns that other owners have about this potentially dangerous situation. i would like to know if there are recalls or other means of getting some help so i can repair the problem asap. hopefully not at my expense. thank you for the opportunity. *tr

Wife put fuel in the vehicle because it was down to a 1/4 tank and it is now the winter months, we dont like to be below half a tank. she drove it home and later that nite i got into the vehicle and noticed the gauge read empty and the light was on. i went to put fuel in it and at 5 dollars the tank for fuel. the gas gauge show empty upon even after filling the tank. the fuel level in the tank falls to a sufficient level to cause the gauge to display erratic and false readings. nothing has been done to correct the failure which continues to be a constant problem. fuel level now must be estimated through the use of the trip odometer the gauge reads full when you first start the vehicle and sometimes stays at full or reads empty with the light on. called local garage they said sounds like a bad fuel level sensor common problem with chevy trailblazers from 02-09. *tr

2002 chevy trailblazer gas tank leak. had it replaced because it was rusted. cost $867. should there be a recall on this? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that he smelled an unusually overpowering fuel odor. he inspected the vehicle and noticed that fuel was on the rear of the fuel tank and the fuel lines were rusted. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 140,000 and the current mileage was approximately 141,000. gm sent consumer a letter regarding extended coverage on the fuel tank modular reservoir. updated 01/21/11

I have been smelling a gasoline odor on the side of my suv where the fuel door/fuel tank is located. research on the internet yielded many trailblazer owners reporting fuel tank/sending unit/pump corrosion resulting in a fuel leak. a family member of mine just had this exact problem repaired on a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. i believe this same issue is starting with my 2002 trailblazer. i replaced the gas cap to eliminate the possibility of the gas odor coming from the tank fill area, but the odor persisted. the odor resembles an actual gasoline spill and/or leak and not just gasoline vapor odor, ie: filling the tank. like i stated before, internet research yields many trailblazer owners reporting this issue and having to pay for costly repairs. any issue regarding the fuel system/gasoline, in my opinion, should be an immediate safety concern. i have not received any information from gm in regards to a recall bulletin. i am going to conduct more investigation, but in the meantime the smell of a gasoline leak is unmistakable. i hope this information is helpful and i hope that a recourse regarding this issue and its repairs can be formulated. in the meantime i feel that a major safety issue is present and needs fast and efficient attention. thank you. the consumer stated the fuel pump was severely corroded on the top including two fuel lines that exit the top of the fuel pump. there was a fuel leak resulting from corrosion. the consumer paid for the repairs at his expense. updated 12/16/10

2002-2007 gmc envoy & chevy trail blazer all. i have seen many of these leaking fuel from the inlet where the filler neck attaches to the fuel tank and some were cracked. i have spoken to other shops that have seen the same. we have replaced 2 tanks for thisin about 4 months but seen signs of more. we are a small shop. please call me if needed for more [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer. while driving approximately 40 mph, there was an overpowering gasoline odor in the vehicle. she stated that the service engine warning light was illuminated on the dashboard and the failure persisted for several months before the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the dealer advised that the fuel tank was leaking where the filler neck met the tank body. she was advised that the fuel tank assembly would need replacing. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 162,121 and the current mileage was 162,563.

I have a 2002 chevy trailblazer that has had a host of problems to date. now i am experiencing two more. twice in the past few months i have been driving down the road with a 1/4 of a tank of gas or better when suddenly the car stalls, the gas gauge goes to empty. if i sit for a moment and then restart the car, the gas gauge goes back to 1/4 full or better. it is very frightening when the car just suddenly stalls out without warning. the other problem is the abs system is now coming on when it should not. in the past two weeks i have had trouble bringing the car to a stop. the abs comes on and disengages the brakes and the car skids ahead instead of stopping immediately. we had the same thing happen on our 2000 chevy silverado truck. it was fixed under recall, then started happening again after a couple of years. when we called chevy, they said they only fix under recall once. we were able to disengage the abs. i have my service station looking now to see if we can disengage the abs on the trailblazer too. these chevys are a real hazard! *tr

Came home after refueling my 2002 chevy trailblazer ltz w/151000mi, noticed strong smell of gasoline. never noticed before - thought i just spilled some. smell persisted, looked under hood, under car, noticed fuel dripping down from fuel tank. called gm cust svc 866-790-5600 was advised there is special coverage for warranty replacement of plastic tank to remedy corrosion. supervisor confirmed my vin is in range but would not honor warranty - they only cover to 10yr-120k mi. vehicle has never been in an accident, so crack in tank must be a manufacturing defect - plastic tank should last the life of the vehicle. gm refuses to accept responsibility for defective tank. *tr

I have a 2002 trailblazer with a gas leak coming from the top of the tank and for 3 days now it has had a smell of gas. *tr

On 9/25/09, my 2002 chevrolet trailblazer stalled and lost power steering when i attempted to make a right turn. when i tried to restart the vehicle, gasoline was caused to spill on the roadway. the vehicle was towed to my local repair shop, and it was determined the fuel filter fitting failed. my vehicle had 39, 993 miles on it at that time. after my vehicle was repaired, further research revealed a recall had been issued under number 02v121000 for the same problem described above. i contacted gm/chevrolet, and was advised that recall did not pertain to my vin, nor were there any other recalls issued for my vehicle addressing similar failures. it is obvious that my vehicle should have also been included in the recall mentioned above. *tr

There is a very bad gas smell coming from my 2002 trailblazer. from what i'm led to believe it's the gas tank and the fuel pump. i have not had it replaced as of yet but i'm sure i going to have to at my expense. i think it should have been a recall if it is an error on their behave. with all the complaints i'm finding on the internet i think it was something they may have missed. *tr

There was a smell of gas, so i took it in to the dealer after they said it should be covered. they found rotted fuel module and hoses, removed fuel tank found fuel sending unit rotted, lines and hoses..replaced sending unit lines and hoses. mdle kit 3.107 part# 19206122 ..pipe 3.163 part#15174333...pipe 3.163 part#15015511...sensor 3.107 part#16238399.. now tell me it would have been covered if i brought it in earlier, i only just got the notice to have it looked at , so how could i have brought it in earlier. *tr

I received a letter for my 2002 chevy trailblazer...on corrosion areas listed in ohio on the fuel tank modular reservoir assembly. it does state 10 years to 120,000 miles....i purchased this vehicle used at over 130,000 miles and they sent me this letter.....they will not help me fix it....is there anything that i can do? it does leak gas! *tr

I have had to already replace the coil pack in my 2002 chevy trailblazer ls a few months ago and not it seems that it or another on is gone bad again the truck is sputtering, lose of power, no speed. i love this vehicle and have already made on complaint about it i also know of several others that have this vehicle and have also reported problems with the same thing. chevy needs to recall these vehicles and attempt to find out what the problem is. *tr

Gas fumes followed by leaking gas fuel module. *tr

Service engine light goes on intermittently. strong gasoline odor from rear around gas tank. possible fuel leakage. *tr

Fuel leaking from top of gas tank at the fuel pump. *tr

I own a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer lt. for the last two weeks there is a very strong odor of gasoline. apparently it is leaking from the top of the tank. i understand that gm is paying for repairs of this problem on 2002 trailblazer ext's under a special coverage warranty. if my vehicle has the same problem the ext, why isn't gm applying that coverage to the lt? *tr

During routine driving i noticed a odor of gas from inside my vehicle. upon inspection i discovered gas leaking from above the gas tank and onto the ground. i brought my vehicle to the dealership and was informed that the fuel module had rotted and therefore was leaking gas onto the top of the gas tank. the gas would then collect on top of the gas tank and cause a strong odor of gas inside the vehicle. i had the fuel module replaced for a total cost of $810.52

Fuel lines from fuel pump rusted, causes gasoline leakage. *tr

Have a 2002 trailblazer that started to smell like fuel. took to dealer and they said gas tank was cracked where the fuel pump meets tank. whole vehicle smelled like fuel. chevy dealer charged me $1,200.00 for new tank, fuel module and ring. really dangerous with all the fumes and disappointed in chevy with no help!! *tr

Gas fumes inside of vehicle , fumes and leaking gas outside of vehicle near gas tank. took to gm dealer to diagnose and they replaced rusted and leaking fuel pump module at my cost i did ask for and had returned the old part which was rusted . would this not be considered a safety hazard with leaking gas? it is a blessing that there was not a fire. *tr

I started to smell gas fumes around the rear of my 2002 trailblazer. i looked under the vehicle and could see a small trail of gas on the fuel tank strap. i called gm they recommended i take the vehicle to a dealer to be looked at. i received a call today advising its the fuel tank sending unit/pump rusted and leak. and they want $894.11 dollars. i have owned vehicle new it just turned 57,000. the vehicle was garage kept for 2 of those years. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer. if the contact does not unhook the battery post each night, the vehicle will not start in the mornings. she purchased a new battery, but the failure persists. the front passenger side of the vehicle near the tire makes a roaring sound intermittently. neither weather nor speed were factors. the contact believes that the gas tank is leaking fuel because it is burning more fuel. the vehicle was not taken to a chevrolet dealer, but was taken to the dealer from where the vehicle was purchased. the mechanic stated that the vehicle was experiencing electrical failure and should be taken to the dealer. the contact was informed that the following nhtsa campaign id numbers did not apply to her vin: 01v126000 (suspension:front:control arm:lower arm), 03v096000 (electrical system:wiring:interior/under dash), and 02v121000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:hoses, lines/piping, and fittings). the current mileage was 165,000 and failure mileage was 150,000.

The engine light continues to come on after it has been turned off. the problem has been recurring over the last several years. more than four diagnostic test have been performed. vacuum problem. no resolutions. gas smell when car initially is started up. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that he smelled a strong gas odor in his vehicle. the dealer stated that the fuel pump assembly rusted and should be replaced. the current mileage was 71,605 and failure mileage was 71,585. updated 01/29/08 *bf updated 01/29/08

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact smelled a strong gasoline odor in the passenger compartment. the vehicle would not start so she replaced the fuel filter. immediately after repairing the vehicle, she noticed the same failure. a local mechanic stated that the fuel pump module needed to be replaced. the contact has filed a formal complaint with the manufacturer. the current and failure mileages were 86,000.

I have a 2002 chevy ,trailblazer, the top of the fuel tank was leaking fuel, had to have it repaired .do to corrosion, i know there is a recall on this problem on the 02 trailblazer .... what can i do about this? *tr

Smell of gas outside motor was determined that the car had defective fuel injectors that were leaking - parts were replaced. *tr

For several days, i smelled gasoline around my vehicle and had trouble starting the vehicle. once i got it to a garages, i was informed that the fuel pump assembly was completely rotten and needed to be replaced. the mechanic informed me that he has never seen this before on a modern vehicle. the fuel pump was working, but the components into the pump were rotten and leaking, thus requiring the replacement of the entire fuel pump. *tr

2002 trailblazer ltz the current and failure kilometres are 106,545 km. the vehicle began to have a strong odor of gas inside and out. it seemed as if we were consuming gas at a very high rate. had the vehicle checked and it was not visible where the vehicle was dripping fuel. nothing was found. later took vehicle to the dealer and was found to have corroded fuel lines on the fuel module sending unit on the top of the fuel tank. at a repair cost of $850.00. we feel this is a safety issue as it could have caught on fire at any time. we understand there is an investigation report (nhtsa action#ea07-009) being done. this manufacturers defect is a serious threat to people driving this type of vehicle. parts such as these should last longer than 100,000 kilometers. we have retained old part from dealer. *tr

I notice a strong gasoline smell at first, then a large amount of gas became evident at idle in the driveway. i took vehicle into the shop and was informed of the "rotted out" pump flange was leaking. i paid almost $700 to have it fixed and complained to the dealer. 12 months later the gm/delphi pump failed and i had to pay to have it replaced again! *tr

Gas vapors coming from under left rear of vehicle when i fill it full of fuel. i saw that this issue is under investigation. i have not yet repaired the vehicle as i am awaiting the outcome of a potential recall. i currently just don't fill it full of fuel. *tr

2002 chevrolet trailblazer has developed fuel leak from fuel sending unit module. must have approximately $550.00 repair done for simple safeties sake. can't drive around leaking fuel. unusual for a 5 year old car to develop gas leaks due to manufacturer defect. would like recall and reimbursement for needed repairs. thank you. *tr
