Refer to nhtsa action number: pe07013 and ea07009 . . . . odi has received reports that the fuel pump module leaks fuel and or vapor underneath the vehicle. gm states, "the failure mechanism is corrosion of the fuel pump module flange which may lead to a fuel leak. corrosion of the fuel pump module flange is the result of the vehicle operating in a corrosive environment." odi has opened this engineering analysis to further assess this issue. *jb

In 2005 my 2002 trailblazer - had smelling fumes, ses light, and a bad diagnosis from the dealer. partly due to the codes coming up for the evap system and related purge. after several resets of the ses light, one tech found gas dripping from under the the tank. the tank was replaced at no charge. in 2007 the same problems again - had smelling fumes, ses light, when dealer was contacted they said that the warranty had expire. we showed them a letter that staid that this was an actual problem and that chevrolet will replace the fuel at the end they repaced the fuel tank at no charge. *tr

I have had two 2002 trailblazers both developed gas leaks from the gas tank . gm did not agree to repair either one. *ak

About 1 month ago we started smelling gas fumes and than we started to notice gas was leaking from our tank onto the ground. when we brought it into the mechanic they told us we had a leak in the fuel tank. our car is a 2002 trailblazer ltz and it just hit 52,000 miles. it has been garage kept the entire time. when we contact the dealer we bought it from they said it was no longer under warrenty and there was not tsb's out. after some research i found the tsb that was put out for this defect. i have not recevied a recall and am experiencing a difficult time getting this problem resloved. *nm

2002 trailblazer is leaking fuel and needs a new fuel modular and filter. this defect is a serious threat to people driving this type of vehicle. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the odor of fuel was noticed in the cab of the vehicle. it was driven to an independent repair shop, who replaced the synchronize valve, fuel sending unit and fuel filter. the consumer was told the problem was with the sending unit. the consumer had the problem repaired, however it resurfaced again. updated 12/18/06. *jb

I also had a noise from underneath vehicle getting louder over 3-4 days then smell of gas began and got very strong after a couple days. when it smelled bad we took it to a shop and the fuel sending unit and filter needed replaced. there was a small hole which was caused by corrosion that the mechanic said he had never seen this before. he said if i hadn't brought it when i did that the vehicle could have caught on fire. *jb

I kept smelling the strong odor of gasoline in the garage or even in the parking lot for about a day after i filled my fuel tank on my 2002 chevrolet trailblazer. there sometimes was a wet spot on the garage floor near the filler cap that appeared to be gasoline. the "check engine soon" light eventually came on. the dealer could find nothing wrong when they pressure-tested the fuel system but the computer fault code indicated an evaporative emissions failure. they re-set the light, but the problem persisted and the light soon came back on the next time i re-fueled. i read somewhere on the nets website about other trailblazer owners who had a broken check ball in their filler necks. i suggested this to the dealer who confirmed that this was my problem too. they charged me nearly $300 to repair the tank neck. i feel that this is the result of defective emissions control device and therefore should be covered under warranty. (i have only 50 k miles on the vehicle). at what point does something like this become a recall since this seems to be happening to others as well? *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the service engine light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealership, who determined the fuel pipe that entered the tank was leaking. the tank needed to be replaced.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds on various road conditions, the odor of gasoline was present in the cab. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined the fuel fittings needed to be replaced. afterwards, the problem persisted. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined the gasoline storage tank assembly needed to be replaced, but the problem persisted. the manufacturer was notified.

Became difficult to start engine over 3 days. then could smell gas. fuel sending unit had 2 tiny holes. could have caught on fire. 8jb

Dt*: the contact stated a fuel odor came from the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealership which was unable to identify the reason for the odor. afterwards, a nhtsa recall number 02v121000 was issued for the fuel filter. the fuel filter was replaced by the dealership under the recall. the fuel odor persisted after the recall was performed in october of 2002. while pulling out of the driveway, the contact noticed a puddle of fuel where the vehicle had been parked since the previous day. after inspecting the vehicle a different dealership replaced the fuel tank in april of 2005. the fuel odor continued to come from the vehicle.

Transmission does not shift smoothly and the vehicles seems to "skip" when driving, had checked and was told the transmission needs servicing. also, several times the car has jumped from 2wd to 4wd on its own, while being driven. thankfully only when going approximately 10 - 15 mph. now the service 4wd light is on. fuel filter needs replacing. oxygen sensor needs replacing. this car is a 2002 with 71,000 miles. *nm

Fuel line disconnects at the fuel filter while driving. this has happened twice in the past nine months. strong fuel odor in the cabin. both times, other motorists brought the fuel leak to my attention. *jb

2002 trailblazer customer states that the fuel module is corroded and had to replaced customer wants to reimbursed**cc *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while driving gasoline fumes were detected. the vehicle was taken to dealer for inspection where they determined the steel fuel lines had rusted through due to salt corrosions. the fuel module kit which includes lines, pipes and fittings were replaced.

Gasoline leak in 2002 chev. trailblazer 87500 miles. leak arose from rusted steel tubing at top of tank from the sending unit. it seems this is a design or manufactoring fault considering car is only three years old. *nm

Tie rods, multiple transmission module problems, airbag, taillights, stop, turn signal rear problem, electrical/ wiring, radio, hvac, pressure control,2 batteries, 2 fan clutches, among other problems. *jb

Metal plate with all of the connections to the plastic gas tank rotted away, causing fuel vapors to enter the vehicle. we only have 38,000 miles on the truck. tank design will hold mud and water in a depression on the top of the fuel tank, promoting rust holes, that not only allowed vapors to escape also leaked gas when the tank was filled. *nm

Dt: the contact smelled gas and it got really strong on 8-11-05. he took the car to dealer to have it checked on 8-25-05. he was treated very badly by dealership. the dealership removed the gas tank and noticed that the two lines on top of the tank were leaking. they told the consumer that he should wash the road salt off of the tank. they stated that was the reason for the leaking. the consumer felt this problem was similar to recall 02v121000. the dealership wanted him to sign a statement, saying the rust and corrosion was his fault, however he refused to do so. then they said they would not get the part until late friday, he felt like the dealership was punishing him because he refused to sign their papers. they would not offer him a rental car. he called gm and they advised him to file a complaint with them against the dealership after he got car back. the dealership has had the car one week now and the repairs have not been completed . *ak

the vehicle was leaking gas two months ago, resulting in the replacement of the fuel tank the first time, in last two months, the fuel tank was replaced by the dealer. the vehicle did have a recall dealing with the fuel lines. the fuel line repair was done twice as well. there is still a smell of gas in the vehicle at this time. the dealer states that currently there is no problem with gas tank. the dealer did state previously that there was no problem with the gas tank. and then replaced it. consumer had to wait for the dealer to get parts to make the repair. the vehicle has been into the dealership at least three times for the same problem. consumer feels this problem is a result of the recall repair work. the problem first occurred after recall of fuel line was first done. recall id number 2016.*ak

02 v 121 000/fuel filter fitting: while driving 70 mph the engine stopped without warning. the consumer inspected the vehicle and noticed that the fuel line retainer clip was missing. the consumer replaced the line retainer. the dealer was not notified at this time. *jb updated 12/27/2005 - *nm

The fuel tank filler neck detached from the tank. as a result, when filling the vehicle with fuel it poured out onto the ground. *ak

Re defective 2002 chevrolet trailblazer 4x4, problem with 4 wheel drive, a/c, batteries, taillights and electrical problems. *bf while driving 55 mph the vehicle's 4-wheel drive went into four wheel high or low intermittently. the vehicle's battery loses it's charge. the taillights went out and the blower in the air conditioner had to be replaced. fuel splashed out of the filler while the consumer was filling the tank. the vehicle stalled intermittently. *nm

Vehicle loses power without warning and causes danger to occupants and oncoming traffic the vehicle is in manufacturer's warranty and has been in shop several times with no idea whats causing problem. *ak

The consumer has had the gas tank replaced twice. both times the tank cracked. first crack occurred at a seam, and the second crack occurred at the filler neck. he smelled gas inside his garage and saw gasoline dripping onto the floor. the service soon light comes on. the service soon light is on again, and the tank is being replaced. there was no repair on the fuel tank or removal of the fuel tank prior to these incidents.

My 2002 trailblazer began leaking gas around the fuel filter connection. my guess is a rate of around 5 gallons in 20 minutes. vehicle kept running. vehicle has a recall on this with nhtsa campaign number 02v121000. i belieive i had this recall 02016 - fuel filter connect performed by hendrick pontiac buick on 6/4/02 . the recall has the following decription on the nhtsa database: on certain sport utility vehicles, a fuel filter fitting can become disconnected. if this were to occur while attempting to start the engine, a no-start condition would result and fuel would be pumped out the fuel filter onto the ground. if the fitting becomes disconnected while the vehicle is in motion, the engine would stop due to inadequate fuel supply and cause a loss of power steering assist. if an ignition source were present, fuel leakage from a disconnected fuel filter fitting could result in a fire.dealers will replace the fuel filter quick connect retainers. i examined the filter connect and found the snap-on part of the filter was not snapped into the holes in the hose connection. the snap was actually rotated about 90 degrees. this was not holding the hose in all the way but just enough to cause a major gas leak and to send gas to the engine. i believe the fuel filter connects are a bad design. 1 of 3 things went wrong. 1) the recall was never performed even though the service paperwork said it was. gm needs to replace the connectors because they are poorly designed and can cause a fire/explosion. 2) a certified gm technician installed the connection to the filter improperly. the connection should be designed so that it automatically aligns itself to the snap or does not slide on. this is not a technician problem, it is a problem with the design of the snap connections. 3) the connection worked itself worked loose over time with the regular bumps of everyday driving. in this case, it is also a problem with the design of the snap connection.

Since purchasing the vehicle, i have experienced problems putting gas in the vehicle. the gas pump keeps stopping - as if the car is full. this happens frequently, but not always. it doesn't matter which station i go to. the dealer replaced some filler hoses or something after i had taken it in a few times, but they were not able to correct the problem. it is very annoying and sometimes i only fill the car up 1/2 - 3/4 full because i can't tell if it is full or not. i squeeze the handle and it immediately kicks off. this also happens when others are fueling the vehicle. it doesn't matter if i turn the nozzle different directions or pull it part of the way out of the vehicle. i also frequently overfill the vehicle because i don't know that it is full. i noticed someone else reported this as a consumer complaint - so it's not just my trailblazer with the problem! it takes a long time to fill the tank when you can only put 1 second worth of gas in at a time! now my warranty is out, so i am probably stuck with this problem as long as i have the vehicle.

In november of 2002, jn automotive has reversed the odometer on my vehicle and i believe they are in violation of the federal odometer law. i just want to find some resources that will help me resolve this situation.

4 wheel drive failure light on dash board and "4 wheel drive full" and "4 wheel drive low" light keep flashing and when i placed truck in park and shut off truck, it lunged backward. gas tank wouldn't take gas and the last time it spit gas out and out onto pavement. brakes don't seem to stop very well and i now have a pulsating feeling under my foot when i brake. *jb

The vehicle began to have a strong odor of gas. it seemed that it was consuming gas at a very high rate. had the vehicle checked and it was not visible where the vehicle was leaking the fuel. knowing that the fuel system is a pressurized system it was felt we should be able to see the spray easily while on a lift and the vehicle running. nothing was found. vehicle taken to a service garage and the fuel tank was dropped. looking at the fuel sensor unit assembly it was noticed that it was corroded. when cleaning the top of the tank with air pressure the sender unit assembly had rusted to the point the air was blowing chunks of metal away. the mechanic advised that the sender unit is recessed into the tank which allows water and other contaminates to sit on top of the metal and deteriorate it. the vehicle has 56000 miles and is serviced regularly. it would seem it had failed prematurely or due to design flaw. *nm

The accident happened 10/29/2004 around 7:00 pm. my husband, was traveling on highway 27 north coming home from vicksburg, ms. the accident report claimed he lost control of the 2002 chevrolet trail blazer he was driving and crossed into the other lane. he was hit on the passenger side of the vehicle by the vehicle in the south bound lane. the accident report used the phrase "t boned" in describing the impact of the vehicles. my husband's vehicle caught fire almost immediately on impact and he couldn't be saved according to the witnesses. *jb

After noticing a strong smell of gasoline and discovering a puddle of gasoline under the fuel tank, it was discovered the fuel tank had a split in the tank where the filler neck joins the tank. ts

Consumer states that there is a crack in the fueltank which is allowing the fuel to leak. contacted dealer mr

Consumer states that while driving the check engine came on. had vehicle serviced and was informed that the gas cap was loose. they tightened and the it light came on again. took vehicle back and found out that there was a hole in the filler pipe that was leaking fuel fumes. mr

Fuel line disconnected while driving at highway speed of 50 mph, took vehicle to dealer for repairs. *ak dealer found vehicle had severe gas leak due to retainer failure. fuel line filter retainers had to be replaced. *tt

Purchased feb 1, 2002. since then have had nothing but problems. had into 4 different dearlerships fixing many problems but after each visit another problem occurs. from tail lights burning out, windhshield wiper motor failures, instrument cluster replaced, heater control panel replaced once, memory mirror modules replaced 2 times, heated seat switches replaced 2 times, rear window defogger/replaced entire rear window 1 time, battery replaced 1 time ( said battery was at fault for current problems) battery was fine and charged me $ 150 for new battery that was not the correct battery replacement, exhaust gasket became loose/loud and had to be replaced, the fuel pump replaced because it just cut off as i was on the expressway going approx 65 miles an hour, i had to get to the side of the road quickly- had to be towed to dealership. problem fixed, however after i picked it up then the current problem began. i could go on and on with the problems that i have had. present problem is that whenever i turn on the heat it dies out with no warning---just stops and stalls. dealership says they fixd it but upon pick up the problem still exists. gone to pick it up 2 times, but when i start it and put on heat, it dies all over again even after dealership claims they fixed it. i live in chicago and it has been a cold winter. almost caused a crash on another expressway on way home from having the airbag sensor and a complete brake job done and all fluids changed. this vehicle is not worth $ 37,000 and i feel it is time that gm accept some responsibility for this lemon of a vehicle. it is my only vehicle and i am still paying dearly for it but lately cannot even use it as it remains in one dealership after another at my expense. i will not purchase another vehicle from gm. i need help and answers as i am not getting anywhere even with this vehicle still under warranty.*ak

Vehicle owner is kenneth starr of clover, sc(grandfather). fuel line became detached from engine while driving on thruway, large quantities of fuel sprayed on and around engine. vehicle is not in previous recall for this problem, would suggest this problem is wider than previously thought. in opinion of trooper and machanic, it was only the fact that he was going 60+ mph that kept the fuel from hitting the manifold and igniting, with the amount of fuel released, survival of vehicle occupants would have been a unlikely. manufacture date of this vehicle is listed as 01/02.*ak

I was driving on the freeway and lost the ability to accelerate. i pulled my car over, and i was inside the car until a tow truck arrived. the tow truck driver informed me that gasoline was pouring out from the underside of the car. a clip failure that left my truck sitting in a gasoline pipe. gm fixed it, but gave it back to me with no gas in my car. i barely made it to the gas station. *la

Problems with air bag dash light, fast engine idle, air conditioner, rear hatch inner strap broke, etc...*mr the airbag light was intermittent. the sir module was replaced, and there was poor terminal connection at the sir wiring harness, and was traced/repaired on the left side impact connector and the codes were cleared. the engine idled fast(especially at start up, and the fuel mileage was 13 mpg. the results of the evaluation and repairs were: passenger impact connector was loose(repositioned/connected), idle within specifics, the emblem had fallen off, the rear hatch inner strap had broken, the transmission seemed to take long to shift into gear(happened sometimes when cold), and the pcm needed to be reprogrammed(j6355 power train controller pcm). there was a thumping sound in the rear differential when shifted, the a/c would blow out cold air when the a/c indicator was off, hot air would come out of the defroster area on the dash when the indicator was set for heater on the floor, the engine made a tapping sound, the lift gate weather strip had come apart, and the battery kept losing charge(3 occurrences). *scc *jb

Engine died while driving at 55 mph. pulled over to the side of the road and tried to start vehicle, but it would not turn over. when driver side door was opened, i noticed a large puddle that smelled like gasoline. looked under vehicle and saw that gas was still leaking out. vehicle was towed to nearest chevrolet dealership. dealer found fuel filter retaining clip had come loose. while at the dealership they also replaced 4wd switch. it had been switching to 4hi and 4lo while in a4wd. not even two days later, the car again died while driving along at 55 mph. engine would not turn over, so vehicle was towed to dealership it was bought from. when dealership service tried to start the car it cranked once then a sound like free spinning was apparent. when the spark plugs were removed broken pieces of piston and ring were found inside the engine and the spark plugs were smashed. engine was replaced.
