First incident: vehicle driven 100 miles and then shut off for about 6 hours. started right up and moved about 100 yards and shut off for about 30 minutes. tried to start it and wouldn't start. after about 15 minutes, it started and vehicle driven home without further problem. second incident, vehicle stall while moving in city traffic (about 35 mph). came to a stop at the bottom of a busy underpass near a major intersection. i called 911 and asked that a wrecker be dispatched. as 911 waiting for a response from the wrecker company (two to three minutes), the vehicle started and i returned to my residence. scan with obd device indicated crankshaft position sensor failure. internet research of the problem confirms. your investigation ea06-016 and subsequent nhtsa campaign number 07v521000 crankshaft position sensor indicates a safety recall. for some reason, gm (denny menholt chevrolet) as well as your website, indicates no recalls on this vehicle. i have an appointment at the above dealership on 10/22 to have the cps replaced. why isn't my vehicle part of the recall? the stall while moving at 35 mph was dangerous and the repair is expensive! thank you. i look forward to hearing from you. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. while driving approximately 65 mph, the engine stalled without warning. the contact waited for one hour before the vehicle would restart and resume normal operation; however, while traveling the stalling failure recurred. in addition, the failure occurred on a separate occasion and the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where they informed the contact that the crank shaft position sensor would need to be replaced. there was a recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 07v521000 (engine and engine cooling). the vin was excluded from the recall. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was 100,000.

Noise and exhaust leak. exhaust manifold nuts broke on 2001 chevy 6 liter. engine only has 90,000 miles. repair cost over $1,000 to fix both sides. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. while driving 65 mph, the vehicle stalled and the battery warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact stated that after 10 to 15 seconds the vehicle would start and perform as if the failure never occurred. the vehicle also stalled at a complete stop and at times the vehicle failed to restart. the dealer was contacted and stated that his vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 07v521000, engine and engine cooling. the failure was diagnosed by a mechanic stating that it was the crankshaft position sensor that was faulty. no repairs were made when the complaint was filed. the failure mileage was 56000 and the current mileage was 61900.

I have a 2001 chevrolet 2500 series truck with an 8.1 liter engine. i have experienced several engine stalls while driving. after a few minutes the engine would restart. since the vehicle is off warranty and i do not have a local chevrolet dealer i had an independent auto repair shop attempt to diagnose the problem. the computer was not producing codes and diagnosis was not possible. after several attempts over a few weeks a code was finally picked up indicating a "crankshaft position sensor failure" which is occurring intermittently. i then discovered that gm had recalled many vehicles due to this problem and replaced the sensor as recently as last year. i contacted gm only to find that even though the symptoms of my vehicle are identical to those recalled, my vin # is a few out of the recall sequence but gm may consider replacing my sensor if i get a diagnosis at a gm dealership. herein lies my problem. due to the intermittent nature of the failure, diagnosis is difficult. it it does not occur while at the dealership i must drive it until another time. i live 35 miles from the dealership and travel even further from there often. when the engine stalls i lose steering and brakes. i am reluctant to continue driving back and forth to the dealership hoping it does not stall in traffic as it has in the past but stalls at a point that produces a code for the dealership. i have a code diagnosis from an independent shop and i just want this safety issue resolved just like gm did with thousands of other 2001 chevrolet 2500 trucks under recall #06083. *tr

Tl*the contact owns 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500. the contact was driving approximately 40 mph on normal road conditions. the engine stalled without warning. the vehicle restarted and resumed normal operation. the failure occurred intermittent. the vehicle is in the process of being taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. the failure mileage was 60,000.

I have a 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500hd with the 8.1l engine with an intermittent stalling problem as described by others. the engine will stall at various times, while driving, sitting at stop lights, etc. the problem has been an issue for several years. i noted the recall issued by gm, but my vehicles vin was 5000 past the scope of the recall. the truck was built in november 2000 and delivered in mid-december 2000. i paid to have the crankcase sensor repaired and it appears to have resolved the problem. the pickup has just over 50,000 miles. *tr

2001 silverado hd 8.1l engine 51,009 miles. experiencing issues associated with nhtsa id # 07v521000. i have had it checked and the scanner shows a crankshaft position sensor failure. i took it to the dealer and was told that they will not fix it due to my vin number being outside the recalled groups. even though it is in the date range of the effected units. i did some research and found that my truck has the same exact part number of the item that is failing. this has caused me to almost be rear ended 3 times and several other times where it quits at highway speed or in an intersection and i loose good steering and braking control. the last time (last saturday) left me and my 2 children (4 and 7) walking in a snow storm with poor visibility and risking freezing temps and almost getting hit by other traffic. it will usually start again but then runs rough but sometimes i have to let it sit for an hour before it will start. vic canever chevrolet in fenton mi is the dealer that said that they will not honor the recall due to vin number not in their system as a recalled unit and the gm customer service hotline would not assist me either. *tr

Began having problems with starting the vehicle on occasion. that lead to losing complete power while at highway speeds (65 mph) as well as losing complete power while at idle or slow speeds. the last time it happened the check engine light came on. it showed a code that indicated the crankshaft sensor was at fault. truck was taken to dealership and this was confirmed, however the dealer informed me that the recall (07v521000) did not apply to my vin even though it was a 2001 with an 8.1 l. i paid to have it fixed at a cost of $375. *tr

Crankshaft sensor defective. 2001 chevrolet 2500hd silverado 8.1l vin g vehicle has had a on and off problem with running rough, erratic shifting, service engine soon light on or intermittent. took to the dealer bought from, never able to find anything wrong. said it might be crank sensor, but if its running o.k. don't worry about it. this problem started in approx feb, 2004 and was last at the dealers spring 2007. 3 days it was there and they still could not even say if there was a problem. engine light still on. problem with the erratic shifting, rough running , engine light on continued until sept.2008 when the problem became very serious. vehicle began to stall or simply just quit running all together. you would be driving at highway speeds or just local driving and the vehicle would simply shut down, leaving you with no brakes or steering. it could not be restarted until you stopped, let it sit for a sometimes up to 10 mins. vehicle would do this 2-3 times a day, or weeks before doing it again. in july 2009 the problem became serious, where the vehicle would just shut of while just sitting at red lights or stop signs. my mechanic did a scan and dtc's for crank sensor and several others came up. it was thought that everything from broken wires to modules had to be checked. i subscribed to a online vehicle repair info site and immediately found a product safety recall #06083 12/11/2007 for vehicles with an 8.1l v-8 engine. the vin numbers on my vehicle were higher than those in the recall, but the description of the problem fit exactly. my mechanic was showed the info and could not find anything on his service sight. it was decided to change the crank sensor. the vehicles performance increased 100% and the problem seems to be resolved. the old crank sensor was saved. apparently g.m. has many more vehicles out there with bad crank sensors than they acknowledge. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500. while driving 65 mph, the vehicle suddenly shut off. the contact was able to restart the vehicle and drive 3-4 miles before it shut off again. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the camshaft position sensor needed to be replaced. the contact did not notice any differences beforehand. the current and failure mileages were 60,000.

I have a 2001 chevrolet 2500hd 8.1l with 120k miles. truck runs great but my engine will just shut off. while driving at any speed the engine will shut off then kick on again all by itself. when stopped at a light it will shut off and will not come back on unless i turn the key to start it again. engine is the only thing that dies, stereo, headlights, etc all remain on and i don't get any service lights or messages on the dash when it happens. sometimes if it feels as if it is going to die on me i can step on the gas pedal to prevent it from dying. *tr

2001 chevrolet silverado 8.1 liter engine will intermittently stall in traffic. service engine light is on and dealer diagnostics say it is a faulty crankshaft position sensor. there is already a recall out for this (gm recall 06083) or nhtsa campaign id # 07v521000, however, the dealership says that my vin # is not covered. my vehicle is exhibiting the identical problems outlined in the recall, so the problem is obviously larger than the few vin's that they are covering. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500hd. while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled without warning. on the third attempt, the vehicle restarted. the failure occurred on numerous occasions whether the vehicle was in motion or not. an authorized dealer informed him that the problem could not be diagnosed without an indicator light being illuminated. the vehicle was taken to several independent mechanics but it was verified that no diagnosis could be given without an indicator light. the current mileage is approximately 81,000. the failure mileage was approximately 52,000. updated evoq 11/02/10

My 2001 chevrolet silverado stalls while driving. there is no warning when this happens. i must bring the truck to a halt and try to restart. sometimes it takes two or three tries before it starts. it seems to happen in warm weather. *tr

Vehicle stopped running while driving, almost involved in accident since i was going downhill. vehicle would not restart. restarted two hours later after tow to garage. dealer inspected and found faulty crank sensor code. dealer found nhtsa recall # 07v521000 was just issued, however my serial # was not recalled. i believe all 2001 models with this power train should be recalled to repair this defective part. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle intermittently stalls. the stalling rarely occurs at lower speeds. the dealer could not duplicate the failure, which occurred every four or five days. the contact was informed that his vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 01v258000 (engine and engine cooling). the current mileage was 135,000 and failure mileage was 110,000.

My 2001 chevrolet silverado pick-up with the 8.1 l engine, suddenly shuts down while driving. the fault code indicates that the crankcase position sensor is defective. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle stalled suddenly without warning while driving at highway speeds. an independent repair shop determined the crank shaft position sensor was bad and needed to be replaced. the contact expressed this incident should be included in the ongoing investigation nhtsa action number: pe06016, regarding the engine and engine cooling.

Motor completely shut off at 70 mph, lost power steering and power braking. motor would not start in neutral. had to cross through traffic to the shoulder and stop before motor would start again. happened 4 times in 3 days. brought vehicle to dealer and dealer told me it was the crank sensor, they have had to do it before. *nm

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled over a dozen times. the failure was noticed while driving 70 mph. the check engine light illuminated prior to the failure. occasionally, the vehicle would just jerk and other times it would completely shut down. the contact had to wait approximately 5-10 minutes before the vehicle would restart. the dealer stated that his vin was excluded from the crankshaft recall. the purchase date and recall number were unknown. the current mileage was 73,000 and failure mileage was approximately 50,000. updated 02-19-08 *bf the consumer stated the problem started at 50,000 miles and through to 73,000 currently. updated 02/14/08 *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while approaching a stop, driving 5 mph and applying the brakes, the anti- lock brake system activated. this caused an increased stopping distance. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. upon inspection the speed sensor hub was corroded due to road salt and was replaced. there is a nhtsa recall, # 05v379000, regarding the service brakes, anti-lock. the consumers vehicle identification number was not included in the recall. the alternator failed. the rotors and brakes had to be replaced due to the rotors rusting from the inside. the rotors could not be turned because they were heavily rusted. the left power window failed, the manufacturer used a steel cable for the assembly, which allowed water to seep in which caused corrosion. the left rear outside axle was leaking. the a/c idler pulley and tensioner was making a loud noise. the right power window failed. the tires were cracking along the edges close to the rim. grease leaked out from the cv joint. the rear oil seal was leaking. the rims were delaminating. the cd would not eject from the player. the ignition switch was replaced, the passenger windshield wiper was loose, the multi-function switch was replaced. the accelerator would stick sometimes and the driver side mirror was broken. updated 07/10/06. *jb

While driving 35 mph the power steering and brakes failed. the vehicle was towed to dealership to have the mechanic check the problems. please provide additional information. *jb

2001 chevrolet 2500hd. 8.1 liter motor, allison transmission. the truck has multiple problems that the dealer is refusing to acknowledge and fix. *la -hard starting when hot. when the vehicle is driven and parked for 10 minutes, it will not start. engine turns over, but does not fire. after an additional 2-3 minute wait, it will eventually start. this happens on a regular basis. dealer had the truck for 1 week and claims he can not reproduce the problem. they suggested replacing parts with no garantee of the fix. -exhaust failing. the exhaust was replaced under warranty due to loose baffles. it is failing again with the same problem. dealer again claims the noise is normal. -excessive oil consumption. i had it in for this problem. the dealer changed the oil and had me come in every 500 miles to check the oil level. it used 1 1/2 quarts in 3,000 miles. this is normal to use this much oil. how ever i tow a trailer and plow snow with this vehicle. during these times of towing and plowing, the truck uses 3-4 quarts of oil in 3,000 miles. there are no obvious leaks. the dealer again claims there is no problem. this vehicle was purchased with the large motor and heavy duty transmission specifically for the type of work i expect it to do.

The truck kept dying so i took it in to a dealership. he replaced the battery and two days later it was dying again. they still haven't figured out what the problem is. *la

Engine knocks on startup and when warm, which sounds like that of the lifter. consumer went to the dealer and was told that this is normal. it's hard to think that gm would make a gas engine to make this kind of noise. the new 6.0 don't make this type of noise on start up. i found out from the dealer that the older 6.0 have made this kind of noise. gm pulled the engines for inspection. it seems like they found the problem and fixed it on the new models and won't fix the mistake of the old ones. *la

Engine uses oil and knocks. *jb

Turck engine has a knock that i was told by the dealer and gm that it was simply a cold start knock. however, i was told by a personal friend at the gm tech center that it is really a piston slap, and is a result of the pistons being too small for the bore which could lead to engine seizure/failure, and that gm is aware of it! the truck knocks even when engine is warm. i have begged for a repair under the trucks warranty but have been denied. i am concerned that at some point the engine could seize and cause a serious accident and harm to myself and others. gm seems to think if they pretend it is a different problem, and if they cross their fingers they will save money and avoid a recall. the dealer indicated to me that they know what the problem is and so does gm but there is nothing they can do for me. at one point gm was offering to extend my warranty but renigd because i was the second owner, even though i paid for their extended warranty. please investigate before someone owning one of these trucks does have the engine sieze and innocent people are hurt! incident date is approximate as i have taken the truck to the dealer many times on many dates in hopes of getting this problem fixed because they want me to go away. *ak

Engine knocks on cold start laststed few seconds after 1000mi now knock for close to a minute can still hear after its at operating temp don't think its safe

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500. the contact stated that the vehicle would intermittently stall while parked or while driving at various speeds. the vehicle would continue as normal once restarted. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 07v521000 (engine and engine cooling). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 20,000 and the current mileage was 70,000.

Upon starting vehicle there is a loud noise coming from engine. consumer feels there is a problem with engine pistons. please provide any further information.*ak

Carbon buildup. the truck has been in the shop 3 times for what the dealer says is carbon buildup. it happens about every 2500 miles. the last time in the dealer said chevy knew it had a problem with the design of the pistons. the new pistons would be out in late 2001 or early 2002 and to keep driving it for now. i did not pay $ 35,000.00 to hear a engine knock. thanks for your help in this matter.

Consumer realized vehicle had a gas consumption problem just one day after purchase, dealer has not been able to remedy problem. (attorney for client). *slc
