Problems with 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 124 201 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

Extreme rust, tailgate cables broke in use, had to replace. tailgate still won't latch properly, dropping open while driving/hauling fairly often; brake line rusted out, replaced before had accident; whole frame rusted - under carriage//tire wells/drive shaft/around reece hitch so i worry about pulling trailer/hailing. horn has rusted off. only 77,000 miles as i do not drive it daily, just to work around my place or pickup/haul/trailer something. gm needs recall to address this rust issue because it is a major safety issue.

I own a 2001 2500hd chevy silverado and last month i had the left rear steel brake line rupture and as a result i lost all braking power. neither the brake light come on and the proportioning valve did not function correctly during this malfunction since front brakes lost all power. i was very fortunate that the road was clear, traffic was light and there were no pedestrians around. the parking brake worked marginally since i was carrying a load of wet soil home. i truly believe this is a very serious defeat with this gm truck. the very next day i had that rear left brake line replaced and the garage technician said all the remaining brake lines are in a similar state. thank you, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'*jb

Total brake failure while attempting to stop due to rusted brake line. brake lines leading to rear brakes and left front rusted through and bled out. i was travelling 55mph.

This is the 5th time my brakes are hanging up and over heating the wheel. smoking severly. had problem with abs. system so i unplugged sensors from front wheels. and on the 1st the right passenger side did it again. doesn't matter if on state hwy or city streets. always starts when moving. a wobble in steering wheel. then pulling right or left depending on which wheel is locking.

Here i am 2016 and the third time i have to replace rusted corrosive brake lines and fuel lines. this time i only put 3500 miles on the truck since the last time. they are on the verge or blowing out, the first two times they did and lucky was able to stop. the fuel line is gone again also. why??

i was leaving my property going up the driveway, i pressed on the brake pedal and it went to the floor and no brakes at all. i had my wife pump the pedal and could see brake fluid shooting from a rusted line. i'm glad i didn't get out on the highway. i have never heard of brake lines rusting out! i have cars from the 60's with original lines. people need to know about this issue before some one gets hurt or worse.

I was driving my 2001 silverado 2500 hd and when i applied my brakes the vehicle started to slow down as expected. all of the sudden the brake pedal went to the floor and i had to press very hard to get the vehicle to completely stop. i am extremely lucky there was no vehicle in front of me and that i was not going very fast when the brakes failed! i took the vehicle to my repair shop and they found a brake line near a block (under the driver seat area) that had blown a hole in it. all the lines at the block were very corroded and need to be replaced. they stated usually the brake line blows out in the rear and that my rear line looked to be in pretty bad shape as well but that it had not blown yet. if i would have been on the highway or going any speed in traffic i would have plowed through something for sure... i cannot believe this type of safety hazard has not been a recall! i would think gm would at least send out a warning letter of the failure possibility. i now feel the need to do a random google search for other possible life threatening failures gm doesn't feel the need to notify owners of. very disappointed. *tr

Rusted brake lines x-2 ,brakes failed and pedal went to the floor, stopped in time no wreck, had to splice line with couplings.

Brake pedal went to floor after launching my boat. found that a brake line had ruptured. glad it didn't happen while i was on the road with the boat in tow. all brakes lines were rusted and i had them replaced following week. very expensive repair. found out this is common on these vehicles. gm really needs to fix this issue. *tr

While coming to a stop a brake line failed due to corrosion. i was very fortunate that i was not pulling my trailer. after inspection i would say that all of the brake lines are corroded and are near the point of failure and will need to be replace. *tr

While driving the brake line ruptured causing pedal to sink to the floor. upon inspection, all the brake lines were completely rusted and degraded to the point of needing to be replaced. *tr

Placed foot on brake and started vehicle. when it started the pedal went to the floor. my son happened to be standing next to the truck and said there was fluid coming out by the front tire on the driver's side. shut the engine off. he checked where the fluid was coming from and saw that all the brake lines were rusted. *tr

On the way to pick up some items from a relative that lived 42 miles, approximately 32 miles into the trip it was noticed that the brakes were getting progressively worse, within 4 miles of our destination, the brakes were almost non-existent. fortunately, we made it, however as soon as we parked and turned the engine off, we heard a pop and liquid began spraying from the right side of the front grill near the headlight. a very large amount of liquid then began pouring out of the right side by the bumper as well. originally we believed it to be coolant as it had a green tint to it, however this didn't explain the poor brake response. we thought perhaps the brake fluid was low, and checked the reservoir. the reservoir had some still, but showed low. we added some, but it poured out almost as fast as it went in. upon further investigation we found the leak not to be coolant, but the actual brake lines had blown out due to rust, and what sprayed out was brake fluid mixed with rust. had this happened 20 minutes later, after we would have loaded a large amount of bricks in the bed, and we had to stop suddenly, this could have been disastrous and even deadly. we learned about this site by looking online and seeing the tens of thousands of complaints of the same thing - chevrolet saving a few dollars and using steel for brake lines instead of stainless steel - a cost of less than $40 per vehicle (we priced replacements and the steel was $195, while stainless steel was $233), and no warning to consumers given even after they acknowledged publicly and the nhtsa investigated, but did nothing...so much for protecting the public. in addition, we had to have the vehicle towed back to our home. hopefully, no one has to die before they're forced to inform all current owners to check their brake lines because they chose to use steel in an area of the country known for steel rusting! *tr

Pushed on brake while exiting freeway and felt pedal go to floor. downshifted transmission and repeatedly pushed brake pedal to slow down. was able to slow down since had a good amount of road until the stop sign. found the rear brake line and burst due to rusting brake lines. *tr

The rear brake lines rusted through causing all the fluid to leak out limiting the braking power ..this was a very bad situation that needs to be addressed to gm.. *js

Got home, pulling into garage brake pedal went straight to floor. hit back wall and back door of house. anyone if front of me would have been seriously injured. found brake lines completely rusted and brake fluid blown everywhere. fyi-i'm a fanatic when it comes to maintenance and upkeep on all vehicles i've owned. *tr

On show covered road my brakes lines ruptured causing me to slam into a tree. the pedal went right to the floor. after inspecting the truck we found all the steel brakes have rusted out and needing replacement. dealer quote was $1.700.00. *tr

I had just replaced the hub and bearing housing on the right front axle on my four wheel drive 2001 chevrolet hd2500 silverado pickup and was in the process of refilling and bleeding the air from the brake lines. during this process it appeared as if it was requiring more fluid than i had removed it was then that i noticed brake fluid dripping from the left front wheel well. to my surprise after removing the plastic wheel well cover i couldn't believe my eyes at what i saw, there were the brake lines either rusted away or delaminated. i have never experienced anything like this in over fifty years of repairing my own vehicles, i can only be thankful that i wasn't on the road towing my fifth wheel trailer when the brake lines failed in such a catastrophic manner. since this happened late in october of 2013 i have yet to replace the brake lines, if you need pictures of the problem i can provide them to you. *tr

The brake lines break / fail fortunately at low speed while towing boat on trailer. the second failure - also of brake lines - occurred just six weeks after the first. *js

While my brother and i were towing a loaded trailer, the brakes failed. upon further investigation, we found all the brake lines were severely rusted and the line to the front brakes had completely rusted through causing a leak. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet 2500 hd. while driving at approximately 5 mph, the brake and abs warning indicators illuminated intermittently. the failure occurred whenever the vehicle was in operation. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 59,000. the vin was unavailable.

Traffic stopped quickly ahead right after light had changed to green. slammed on my brakes, abs went on and my pedal went to the floor, pulled over and found brake fluid flowing under drivers side door. truck is at the dealers.......... rusted brake lines. *tr

Driving to work when i use my brakes they felt soft the next time i used them the peddle went to the floor. after stopping my truck i see a rusty brake line under my truck had a hole in it and fluid was pouring out. *tr

Both of the brake lines on my truck have failed due to rust. *tr ## vin failed ##

While helping my son move to remove furniture from flooded illinois river home the truck i have owned since new lost brakes . upon inspection i found the brake line going from the proportionate valve to the rear drivers side brakes had rusted through and had failed. myself and my son replaced the line and tried to bleed brakes with partial success , could not get one bleeder loose but got vehicle functioning to get it to my home to continue working on it further. had to replace front caliper , and upon trying to further bleed brakes another line going from the front master cylinder to the rear proportionate valve was also leaking, upon further inspection i decided both lines were rusted and needed to be replaced. this vehicle only has 67000 miles and the brake lines should not fail that quickly. all brake lines on truck are rusted and general motors has a very serious safety problem. this is going to be an expensive fix if i have to replace all lines , it has already cost me a lot and i did all the work so far. *tr

Rusty brake lines, they shouldn't rust out and fail thus causing a dangerous situation. i pulled up to my destination and applied the brakes, the brake pedal went completely to the floor and the vehicle only slowed down. i then applied the pedal quickly several times and the vehicle eventually stopped but way past it's mark. by luck there wasn't anything in the way or i would have hit anything in it's path. at the low speed i was traveling it was possible to come to a stop . a landscaping timber chocked the front wheels at the front to help make the stop possible. my biggest concerns are , what if i was going faster as i was just minutes before. when the brake fluid sprayed out of the broken rusty brake line , the resulting smoke cloud was my only warning. ,no warning and total loss of brakes and stopping ability. i was fortunate i was going slow when this happened and i didn't hit anyone or anything. *tr

The brakes failed in an emergency stop situation. a car ran a stop sign in front of me. i applied the brakes hard. the abs kicked in and i avoided a collision. i applied the brakes again and the pedal went to the floor. brake fluid was leaking on the ground from a ruptured brake line. i took to the dealer and they stated that all the brake lines are corroded and require replacement. *tr

One of the brake lines has rusted clear through and ruptured when i pressed on the brake pedal. looking at the other lines, it appears that they are about to rust through as well. i have other vehicles that are much older and more miles that the brake lines are like new. there is a flaw in the lines installed on my truck. *tr

Loaded truck with lumber at local lumber store, went to move truck to leave. as soon as i started to move the red brake light came on. got out opened the hood saw almost of my brake fluid gone-thought it was just needing fluid-drove few blocks to lube service dealer wand together inspected the brake lines under the driver seat where you could see brake fluid all over the line-that has rotted through-had vehicle towed to repair/replace all brake lines. see invoice 166644. had brake lines replaced cost was $1163.59 and truck was out of my use for 3 days. *tr

Brake line corroded and blew under driver side leaking all fluid out and no brakes. wasnt driving fast luckily and no accident. *tr

Brakes completely failed. *tr

Severe corrosion of the brake lines leading from the abs unit to all four wheels resulted complete failure of the brakes. the left rear brake line developed a rupture roughly 2 inches long above the fuel tank that made it impossible to develop any brake system pressure. the failed line was replaced by a local chevrolet dealership and the rest of the brake lines were "inspected." the right front brake line ruptured where it passes around the left front wheel well, roughly 2 months later again due to severe corrosion, and again resulting in complete brake system pressure loss. this line was completely deteriorated as well and should have been replaced at the time of the first failure. the size of the ruptures in both cases made it impossible to develop and supply any brake system pressure to the 3 remaining wheels. in both cases, the failure occured when the truck was moving at under 10 mph and approaching a stop sign. the first time i stopped the vehicle by running into the ditch, and the second time i stopped it by stomping on the e-brake and skidding to a stop. had the failure occured on the highway, it would have resulted in an accident involving a heavy truck. this is a truck with a +9,000 lb gross vehicle weight and +10,000 lb max trailer weight rating. it sounds like this is a frequent problem with gm trucks and suvs from this time period. it is also important to note that the truck was located in south carolina from 2002 until 2007 and was only in the northeast for five winter seasons or approx. 65,000 miles. the truck has no cosmetic body rust and no significant rust on the frame or undercarriage. this was a premature failure resulting in a very dangerous condition. i have already replaced my remaining lines, but this is way more worthy of a recall then a rusted tailgate support cable. *tr

All of the steel brake lines on my chevy silverado 2500 hd have severely corroded and are in need of replacement. the truck has not been used off road or in harsh environments and has been regularly maintained. *tr

While backing up the truck to hook up to a trailer, i pressed the brake pedal and it went to the floor. the brakes failed. i pressed the pedal a few more times and heard brake fluid leaking from outside the cab somewhere, somewhere under the driver seat. after looking around the master cylinder and firewall i traced the lines along the frame and found that all four lines along the frame rail were severely rusted/corroded. at least one line had rusted through and was leaking fluid. the brake system lost pressure and the truck can only be slowed by using the parking brake. *tr

I was driving on us 41 when the light started to changed i applied the brakes and the pedal went to the floor, the rear brake line burst, this first occurrence was in sept 2012, then this november the same thing occurred accept the front brake line burst. both times i had the chevrolet dealer perform the repairs. the second repair ,i was informed by the service tech that this occurs with trucks that are in the northern states quite often and is due to corrosion that attacks the carbon steel brake lines. i was very lucky in both brake failures that nobody was in front of me, otherwise there would have been possible injuries.. *tr

I was backing out of my driveway when the brake pedal went to the floor. upon inspection found brake lines rusted and brake fluid leaking. *tr

Approached stop sign, applied brakes, pedal went to the floor...while towing an enclosed 26' trailer with full load. trailer brakes enabled a controlled stop of vehicles without an accident. brake fluid was dripping from area beneath driver's side door along frame. one (1) line is leaking, with all of the other lines severely rusted (visually). *tr

Was towing a 4200 lb load when the brake pedal went to the floor. no warning light. pulled safely off of the highway (barely!) and into ocean performance marine - at the end of the i-95 offramp. left the boat there and had the silverado towed. a brake line ruptured and was leaking brake fluid badly. still no warning light. *tr

Traveling at 65 mph brakes all of a sudden the brakes were applied w/o applying them loss of steering control etc. evaluating this problem ii saw that the brake pedal was going down to the floor, so i pulled up on it with my foot and the brakes released but steering control did not resume. i got off at the next exit and very slowly made my way on home. any application of the brake pedal resulted in brakes locking up and they were applied so tightly that any acceleration could not speed up unless i pulled up on the brake pedal. upon arriving home looked things over no power steering unless motor was at high rpm, power steering pump looked as if it expelled fluid out the breather cap and the brakes smelled as if very hot. now that this happened i recognized this had happened before but somehow repaired itself, but not to this extreme. i suffered bruises from shoulder harness and seatbelt and some knots on my head from being thrown around i came so close to out of control and a rollover simply couldn't control my truck. *tr

Was leaving for a trip and had my trailer on the back. pressed the brake pedal and it went to the floor. looked under the truck to find my brake lines were leaking. *tr

2011: i lost my brakes while hauling 2 horses in the mountains of western maryland. as i was traveling downhill, i was extremely fortunate to have been able to turn into a business that was "uphill" an used gravity to stop. this was extremely scary. i had my truck towed and learned that my brake lines rusted out. 2014: i took my truck in to have an oil change and learned that my fuel lines were leaking. i had no warning and obviously i replaced them. i have also replaced my air conditioning twice. *tr

Brake lines rusted out and allowed brake fluid to leak out when i applied the brakes. had vehicle towed to curry auto in bloomington, in for replacement of rusted brake lines. this happened a second time about two months later when another original set of brake lines under the bed of the truck rusted through and caused brake failure. both times i was driving in hilly country and was fortunate not to crash into something. dealer said that this is a common problem with silverado trucks of brake lines rusting out. i have a 1996 buick roadmaster that has rusted out quarter panels and the brake lines are original.this truck is rust free except for the brake lines. gm should pay for the replacement of the brake lines on these trucks. *tr

The vehicle stalled while driving down a ramp to highway 41. power brakes and steering did not work as the engine was dead. the vehicle had to be cranked repeatedly to get it to restart. this was the first incident that i remember, but it happened again many times over the years without warning. finally this year after some research i found that the problem was caused by a faulty crank position sensor. i learned there was a recall (nhtsa - ea06016) for this but gm said my vehicle was not covered by it even though it was the same problem identified in the recall. i have read reports of others that had the same failure but gm has refused to fix saying the vehicle was not included in the recall. i believe the recall should be expanded as this is a serious problem that could cause an accident. the crankshaft position sensor was replaced and the problem has been solved. i have the old sensor if needed for testing.

Brake line corrosion caused total brake system failure. fortunately, no one was injured or killed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500. while driving at any speed, the brake lines often fractured. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brakes need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired twice, but the failure recurred many times. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 98,000. updated 09/20/16*lj *tr

Brake line failure. abs system failure. light for abs and brake have been on and off since original purchase. dealers could not eliminate the problem. noticed rust on brake lines throughout. currently all brake lines are covered in rust and leaking just prior to the abs components on driver side middle frame rail. brake lines are brittle to the touch. currently the breaking system has no pressure. all fluid has leaked from the system. service requested by dealer for noisy and leaking transfer case. dealer applied grease to the drive shaft. problem not resolved. while driving in 4 wheel drive, the transfer case experienced a catastrophic failure. unit was extremely hot and the gears were ground out. to my knowledge gm is and was aware that the transfer case fluid pumps were wearing a hole in the case from the inside. now know as "pump rub". dealers had opportunities to repair and or replace and failed to act to resolve the known damage. *tr
