I noticed my brakes starting to feel soft after a panic stop and a leak under my truck. the leak was traced to the brake lines under the truck cab leading to the antilock brake valve. root cause of failure was extensive corrosion to the brake lines. all brake lines will have to be replaced. i am the original owner of this truck. *tr
Complete failure of braking system. as i was leaving a parking lot (at about 5 mph) the brake pedal went to the floor as i applied the service brakes. there was no braking control. i was able to bring the vehicle to a stop as it rolled across the street by shifting the transmission into reverse and bumping it against the curb. there was no vehicle damage or occupant injury. no brake warning light showed either before the event or after the vehicle was stopped and i reapplied the brakes. the vehicle is currently in the repair shop and we are waiting to get the parts to repair. there is a pool of brake fluid located under the driver's door which is where the brake line has corroded and failed. i will need to replace all the brake lines as they are also corroded, as well as all the brake rotors and pads because of corrosion. i will retain the corroded parts for future inspection. *tr

i want to register a safety complaint with regard to the oem brake pads that were installed by an independent shop on my 2001 chevy silverado hd 2500. the pads were purchased by the shop (levine's garage) in new windsor ny from barton birks chevy in newburgh ny and installed on my truck in feb 2009 in addition to new rotors. i recently smelled brake burning and disassembled the brakes to discover the pads on the drivers side were pitted and scored. the rotors showed no damage. i replaced the pads and returned the damaged pads to the shop and was told they had a one year warranty and it was passed the warranty period. the pads on the passenger side are fine. both sets of pads have about 90% material still on them. i believe these pads are defective and would like your intervention.

Sudden brake failure on 2001 chevy 2500 pickup truck with 70k miles - had dealer replace rusted lines over fuel tank two months ago, checked all brake systems and did not find any problems. have driven vehicle about 250 miles since repaired. today the brake pedal went all the way to the floor when stopping at a 4-way stop downtown. almost collided with another vehicle but was able to avoid the vehicle and pedestrians on side walk. checked brake fluid level and it is normal level. will have vehicle towed back to dealer for repairs. no obvious leaks or damage to brake systems. *tr
Abs system activates while stopping at slow speeds, makes brake pedal shutter, abs makes noise. this causes the vehicle to not make a complete stop immediately. vehicle has brand new brakes and rotors. also all brake lines are badly corroded. contacted chevrolet in regards to the service brakes, hydraulic: antilock recall of 8/29/2005 for salt states #49552 - they indicate my vehicle is not in the recall??? *tr

Rear disc brake rotors on 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd are rusting to the point where they will have to be replaced for a second time at 68,000 miles. the first occurrence was 7/28/2005 at 38,000 miles, now at 68,000 miles, the vehicle braking performance has severely degraded to the point where it feels like it's braking only with the front disc brakes. i was told by the service personal that the rear rotors and pads will need to be replaced, not because of wear, but because of rust. *tr

Rusted brakelines have rendered my truck useless until repairs can be afforded because i sure cant get to the abs to unscrew the back brake line ! beside the fact that one would think a 9 year old truck's brake line would be the last thing to worry about, the rocker panels that will cost 5-6 thousand to fix according to maco have also failed and have rusted away to near nothing. so for the second time in my life, i am left with a beautiful truck i have to crush. perhaps if i could afford to be the original owner for once, this sort of thing wouldn't happen to me. good looking truck, awesome engine design, lousy metal and hard to service major components. i paid $2500 to rebuild the transmission for this truck only to have my 2001 2500 silverado killed by a brakeline. i suppose i should have to buy a new truck every 5 years to avoid this sort of nonsense. *tr
The brake lines on my 2001 chevy silverado 2500 crew cab have all rusted through brake rushed out and i was left without any brakes. stopped truck with emergency brake and had it towed. what if i had killed someone is that worth the extra 40 dollars for stainless steel lines. come on you are responsible for the publics safety. this problem is widespread. it's a crap shoot every time you drive. *tr
Rusted brake lines. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500. the contact stated that the interlock braking system failed in her vehicle. the mechanic stated that the wheel interlock system was dirty and triggered the sensor. when she pulled into her driveway, the system failed and caused the contact to crash into the garage. there were no injuries. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). the contact would be responsible for the repair costs. the failure mileage was 80,000.
Corroded brake lines caused fluid leak. lines replaced at my expense. anti-lock unit now faulty and likely due to contamination from corroded brake lines. anti-lock wheel sensors failed numerous times, once replaced under warranty, twice at my expense.
Anti-lock on brakes fail going at slow speed and brakes do not work. the dealer said to sand the rust off the sensors, and would not correct the problem. *tr
Service brakes, hydraulic, anti-lock - front wheel speed sensor defect. there is an open recall and nhtsa # 05v379000, this however does not apply to my (and any other vehicles) although the problem is identical and the repair is identical. the above nhtsa# does not cover 2500hd and 3500 series trucks although they are still silverado models. this is the second time my vehicle has gone into service for this issue once in 11/2005 and now 11/2008. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. while changing the oil, the contact noticed that the brake line was leaking. he replaced the brake line. the dealer has not been notified. the current and failure mileages were 97,848. the consumer replaced the brake lines with stainless steel due to the corrosion of the lines. updated 12/12/07
For the past four years i have had daily problems with my brake system. yesterday it finally cost me $900 to replace all of my brakes. the pads still had about half life, but the rotors were completely shot and rusted. there is no way that the brakes should have been rusted that much. the mechanic where i took the vehicle even said that he was surprised that i made it this long. he expressed that he has seen the trucks come in with as little as 20,000 miles due to the fact that the rotors had rusted totally. it is obvious there is a problem with the rotors that come factory installed with all silverado trucks. also i have contacted gm about the abs problem that i am still having and have had for the past four years. right when the truck is about to stop, the anti-lock brakes kick in and the truck veers off to the right. when i talked to gm they said that even though my truck was manufactured in 2001 and has the same brake system as the regular silverado, since it is the hd model, it is not covered under the recall. i did have a case number with them and all they said is that i should have it fixed before i had an accident. they admitted that they knew of the problem, but would not fix it under the recall. now, $900 later, i have a brand new set of brakes, but the truck still does not want to stop once it gets under 10 mph. it makes no sense to me why they will not stand behind their product. i am sure i am not the only one who has sent something in about the 2500 hd model, so i hope that something can now be done. i am even willing to let one of your technicians come out and test drive my vehicle personally to show that it is doing the same thing as the recall for the regular 1500 models. the only way i have found to stop the brake failure is to pull the fuse for the whole abs system, but then you have to stare at the red light on the dash cluster all the time, plus you do not have abs if you need it. please get them to ...
Dt*: the contact expressed concern that the vehicle had a problem with the wheel speed sensor and the vehicle was not included in the nhtsa recall #05v379000 regarding service brakes, hydraulic:antilock due to the vin. the vehicle was not taken to a service dealer to verify the problem with the vehicle.
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. the vehicle jerks when the brakes are depressed. there are no warning indicators. the dealer diagnosed the cause of failure as the abs system. the contact referenced recall # 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). the dealer stated that the vin for the vehicle does not qualify for the recall. the engine size was unknown. the current mileage is 113,000 and failure mileage was 100,000. left message 10/16/07 . * lj
Dt*: the contact stated while approaching a stop, driving 5 mph and applying the brakes, the anti- lock brake system activated. this caused an increased stopping distance. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. upon inspection the speed sensor hub was corroded due to road salt and was replaced. there is a nhtsa recall, # 05v379000, regarding the service brakes, anti-lock. the consumers vehicle identification number was not included in the recall. the alternator failed. the rotors and brakes had to be replaced due to the rotors rusting from the inside. the rotors could not be turned because they were heavily rusted. the left power window failed, the manufacturer used a steel cable for the assembly, which allowed water to seep in which caused corrosion. the left rear outside axle was leaking. the a/c idler pulley and tensioner was making a loud noise. the right power window failed. the tires were cracking along the edges close to the rim. grease leaked out from the cv joint. the rear oil seal was leaking. the rims were delaminating. the cd would not eject from the player. the ignition switch was replaced, the passenger windshield wiper was loose, the multi-function switch was replaced. the accelerator would stick sometimes and the driver side mirror was broken. updated 07/10/06. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated there were grinding noises and an increased stopping distance while brake pressure was applied at various speeds. the vehicle was seen by a dealer. the dealer determined the brake discs defoliated and there was metal on metal resulting in poor braking. the dealership replaced the brake pads and rotors which corrected the problem.
Dt*: the contact stated all four brake rotors pitted due to rust build up. while approaching a stop sign at 45mph, the vehicle lost use of the rear brakes. however, no incidents occurred. the vehicle was taken to the local dealership for inspection. the dealer inspected the rotors and determined the rotors were normal, no repairs were made.
Both antilock speed sensors went faulty after 3.5 years and were replaced by mfg. now 7 years and 70k miles both are faulty again and gm says your problem. even though a recall is in place my vin # is not included??? $900.00 i will need to pay. *tr
My chev truck 2500hd vin [xxx] abs system will activate at slow speeds it works fine at higher speeds. i called about the recall 05v37900 and was told this truck was not one of the recalls. it seems to be doing the same thing as the recall states. *nm updated 07/18/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Unwanted anti-lock brake system (abs) during low speed braking applications. which could result in a crash. recall number:05v379000. *jb
While taking my pick up in for its 18000 mile maintenance checkup, the dealership told me that all 4 rotors had to be replaced due to delamination of metal from the surface of the rotor. after inspecting the rotors myself, it was obvious this was the case. prior to this visual inspection, there was no sign of any brake problems. talking to various mechanics, as well as the head of the maintenance department, i could not get a believable answer as to why this occurred. the dealership stated that gm was having this sort of problem, but that it was my responsibility to have the repairs made. several days and $1200 later, i received my truck back with working brakes. however, had this problem not been found at this time, i'm concerned that the brakes could have failed without warning, with obvious consequences.
2000 chevrolet silverado c2500hd recall. unwanted anti-lock brake system (abs) activation. campaign number: 05v379000. my 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500hd has the same problem and should be recalled for the same problem. *jb
