Problems with 2009 Chevrolet Malibu SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 99 126 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

I was driving and the power steering light came on and steering got real hard to turn and now i have no steering power to drive and i'm scared to drive and also my car be in reverse and it went forward

My electric power steering just went out while driving and my anti lock break lights came on, after researching this is a common issue in 09's in very dangerous, there were recalls on this but my vin number is saying my car is not included, i find that hard to believe.

Esc turns off and on by itself while driving. service power steering light comes on and the wheel is hard to turn i have to kill the car and restart it to get it to start working again. when i press my breaks the car jerks and the esc acvtive light comes on. the passenger side headlight goes in and out by itself i've replaced the bulb but it seems to be a wiring issue.

Lost power while driving on main road at 55 speed zone and car would only do 15 mph finally got to a store and got it stopped and steering was shaking and car shakes when i hit brakes

While the vehicle is in motion the dash will display the traction control service light and the screen will read service traction service esc, the brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is not pushed and turn off when it is pushed. the cruise control also can not be engaged. the brake switch was replayed however all problems came back 2 weeks later. all these issues have been on going.

Over a period of 7 days mid-nov-2019, brake lights would work backwards. depressing pedal, brake lights off. pressing gas pedal brake lights on. within a few minutes, service esc/traction msg. shut car off, restart, everything worked fine. started as weather turned cold/damp. happened both stationary and moving. brought it to dealer, "could not replicate problem".

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated on several occasions while driving, the drivers side headlight and rear brake lights became inoperable. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be repaired. the parts replaced was not stated by the contact. a dealer was not contacted. the contact referenced the failure to nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (service brakes, hydraulic, electrical system, exterior lighting, vehicle speed control, electronic stability control). the manufacturer was not contacted or informed of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 113,000.

Takata recall recently while driving and in park, even when i am sitting at a red light my car my locks will lock and unlock without me pushing the buttons on the door, which are broken and the dealer would not fix it upon request. also my car will stall at times because the door locks are motioning on their own. for some reason the electrical system in the car messed with the locks when the prior owner put in a auto start in the car, which i did not know of until the car was owned and it was'nt told to me either. i feel this car was a rough struggle since getting it and now its so hard to get fixed because of someone else's non knowledge before selling it.

Warning lights on dash contantly flash: esc, brake lights, tire sensors, tire traction, engine reduce speed. the car turns off while actively driving (in motion) , sometimes will start up in neutral or park right away and sometimes not. on i-95 and city street. dealership stated the timing chain need to be done so it got done and car still doing the same thing. sensors also has been replaced.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering was faulty and excessive force had to be used to turn the steering wheel. in addition, the electronic stability control indicator (esc) illuminated and the contact's spouse changed the brake hubs more than twice. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the esc sensor needed to be serviced and a new power steering system needed to be installed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failures. the failure mileage was 154,700.

Takata recall. the whole car appears to be having problems at once. we go and get a certain minor problem fix and the next things pops up. having problems driving acceleration and breaking. doesn't seem to be safe to drive.

When starting my car, i attempt to take it out of park and i need to step on my brakes as if i am slamming them just to move my car out of park. my brake lights are reversed, i noticed this at night when a car almost hit me. i thought it was the brake sensor so i changed it and that didn't fix the issue. since then 3 cars have almost hit me because of this braking issue. while driving my traction light also comes on, it states 'service traction, service esc' and makes my car shake.

Brake lights not functioning correctly .brake lights illuminate at the opposite times. meaning lights come on when not touching the brake pedal yet go off when depressing the brake pedal. this brake light malfunction is intermittent. i have taken the vehicle to the dealer 6 times in last 9 years for repair. chevy has a service bulletin on how to fix and dealer does repairs for free. the repair lasts not long before i notice they are again malfunctioning. took vehicle to dealer twice so far in 2019 and each time the brake lights worked perfectly and they could do nothing. today they are not functioning ,but by time i get an appointment and arrive at the dealer the lights will function correctly. but they will fail again this cycle has gone on for years and chevy is aware of this issue . the dealer service bulletin has them putting dielectric grease and a wire harness on the body control module connection .which they have done at least 3 times . please issue a recall as i see 09 malibu s driving down the highway with brake lights on routinely and the web has tons of people complaining. you can have my car to test if you need it to prove the problem exists . once before you took my chevy tahoe 97 to prove a power steering issue . date listed below is the last date i took car to dealer for repair , but they could not get the brakes to malfunction yet a day prior they malfunctioned. in next question it asks how many miles on car when happened . i put in the first time i took it to the dealer in 2010

I have a malibu that has issues with the brake lamps. the lamps may either illuminate with out the brake pedal applies or turn off when the break pedal is applied. there a recall for this issue #16188. this recall replaces break apply sensor and the bpps harness and connector repair. but in the bulletin it states that the issue is cause by the bcm voltage surges. to me the recall should include the bcm. the recall repairs that damaged cause by the bcm. why is the bcm not included in the recall. i have had the recall completed and have had the same brake issue 4 additional times. i currently have my car in a gm dealer right now and i am now told that i should replace the bcm. when i dropped the car off this morning, i left all my service records so i do no have the exact dates for repair. this is a very serious safety issue.

Takata recall, as i was dropping my daughter off at the bus stop i tried to pull back up to my house and the power steering came on and the wheel was hard to turn while my vehicle was in motion and there was alot of cars coming my way as i was trying to turn. i told my husband about it he went to check that it had power steering fluid in it and it was not low at all then he got in it to drive and it worked just fine. that was a scary experience for me. another incident when i went to go get my car inspected the third brake light would not come on but when i went to my mother in laws it worked just fine and when i left to go home lastnight it was coming on when i wasn't even pushing the brakes so me and my husband figured it was a shortage in it or the wires need replaced. someone needs to do something about this before there be an accident. i was doing some research about my vehicle and i seen that it had serveral recalls. the manufacturer recall #: n130036 the nhtsa recall #: 14v252

While driving on highway, traction service indicator would come on as well as esc indicating it was off, also brake lights would stay on all the time and cruise control would not work, vehicle would downshift at highway speeds (approximately 60 mph). passenger side lower beam light continues to blowout (have replaced three times in as many months) also turn signal will not always click off after turning. as far as repairs on traction, esc brake lights and downshifting, i removed the bcm connector, cleaned it and used dielectric grease on it and as of now seems to have resolved the problem, however, the headlight problem is ongoing as well as the turn indicator, if you will go online, (google) lower beam headlight problem on chevy malibu's as well as as the other electrical problems, you will find numberous complaints, but no recalls

When driving the car, the brake lights go on when not braking and go off when applying the brakes. this happens on city streets and highways.

While driving my esc - enhances stability control light, abs and traction control lights came on. when i stopped at a light and then tried to drive forward i was able to move my vehicle until the brakes kicked in and started slowing me down. after driving about 5mikes my husband who was driving behind me signaled to pull over. my brake lights were on and when i engaged the brake pedal to come to a stop the brake lights went off. after i released the brakes, and got out of the car with it still running my brake lights came back on.

While driving, sometimes my brake lights come on when i am not depressing the brake pedal, sometimes, when i press the brake pedal the break lights do not come on, the traction control light comes on and stays of then later it goes off.

I have had this issue serviced by the dealer and still i ensuring the same problem even after it was resolved via recall and gmc voucher , the brake lights come on when i'm driving!!!! this complaint isn't the first of its kind and from the looks of things this isn't only affecting my vehicles i have read through other reports online as well as complaints talking about this same issue. i became aware that the problem arose again when other drivers sped around me flicking me off. one incident almost resulted in being clipped as the other driver was so close to my vehicle as he raced past to cut in front of me. please fix this issue. it's a very dangerous situation as braking is a key component to driver safety!

High mount center stop light does not work drivers heated seat heater does not work

Have lost all power steering, sensor is messed up, brakes are barely working, why wasn't a recall issued for all 2009 malibus? this is beyond dangerous.

The caliper arms on both of my passenger side tires have gotten stuck, wore down the new brake pads completely and destroyed the rotors of my car in the past. the dealership's warranty had covered the replacement of the pads, correction of arms and rotors previously but the second occurrence happened after my warranty had expired and was extremely expensive. when the rear passenger side got stuck the sensor for my tire pressure was showing but there was no hesitation or issue with breaking. a soft dragging sound lead me to believe the sensor itself had disconnected from the vehicle and was dragging on the ground and making a soft but strange noise. its going to take me 2 weeks to get into the dealership for an appointment ' since then, my rear rotor has become effected and will need replacing. this morning the tire pressure monitor sensor remained on the screen but when i first started driving and attempted to use my breaks, i did not stop and my foot touched the ground as i pressed the pedal. as i pulled into the parking lot of my office (about 45 minutes of morning commute), more lights lit up the back panel including the emergency break light, the 'brake fluid,' warning, 'service esc,' followed by 'esc off' scrolled across the dash and my breaks did not work at all when i attempted to slowly stop. i complained about the esc warning light coming on previously and stopping my power steering from working but the dealership said they couldn't recreate the warning so they couldn't help me.

Service esc lights comes on and the service abs

Driving down the road come to find out because someone told me that my brake lights are not working properly when not applying the brakes the brake lights are on acting as if i was breaking and when i brake the brake lights turn off so in other words it's reversed. and also when i googled online to find out if i could find the problem multiple people were having the same problems i googled why are my brake lights on when not applying the brakes and also according to some people online they said there was no recall and the dealer wouldn't do anything for them. this is a safety hazard and very dangerous and right now i feel very uncomfortable driving my car especially in the situation that i am in.

I am reporting two incidents! approximately 6 months ago my break lights starting turning on again (after the recall was fixed a year prior) while diving the vehicle. i would tap the breaks and the light would turn off (giving cars behind me the idea that i was breaking when i wasn't and when i was breaking to slow down, they couldn't tell). it still does this problem. now as of 3/18/2017 while driving on the highway my "service esc power steering" light came on. it was very hard to steer off the highway or even get the vehicle home. as i research my vehicle online, these two issues were recalled back in 2014. i don't know if my vehicle was serviced for the power steering recall as i bought the vehicle on 12/26/2014. i do know that the break light recall was serviced because i took my vehicle in for the recall. i have an appointment tomorrow at the chevrolet dealer, but i know i'm going to have to pay $1200 to $1600 for this repair. something needs to be done about these recalls! someone needs to make sure they don't continue to happen every year or every other year going forward.

My brake lights stay on when i am driving the car. the cruise control will just stop working and the car of course slows down at this point. yesterday the low traction and eic light came on. this has been going on for several months with the brake lights and cruise control the low traction and eic problem just started yesterday. i have read page after page of complaints on this same thing happening on this model year make of car. i have had to take my car in for several recalls but i have not seen one on this particular issue. my car has 138,000 miles on in it and of course this happens while it is in motion on the highway road street etc. it could not happen if the car was not in motion. this is a scary thing to be driving your vehicle and pray your going to make it to where you are going without a crash.

I have filed complaint before. dealership has been working on it. it has set idle now for 2 weeks. messages service esc -service stab.-brakes lights stay on-rpms escalates and car chugs down. i have had to dealerships 7 times and independent mechanic 1 time. have talked to gm numerous times. finally talked to [xxx]-he had real good advice-trade it off-let some other sucker have the problem-he will allow me $2,500 gm customer loyalty rebate on new car(gm). if you are having the same problem you may call [xxx] at [xxx]. good luck. this has been ongoing for almost 2 years. 4. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I made a complaint on around l/17/17 complaining about my car have service esc service traction and trying to stall out with brake lights being on> since that time it has been at dealership more than being driven. it is there now, making this the 7th trip to dealership and once to independent mechanic. this is a common problem with malibu and needs to be resolved by general motors-not me. you ask for a date when this happened-the space only allows for 1 date. it has been ongoing for over 1 & 1/2 years.

While in motion going to fl on rt 95 my speed control stopped working, what i didn't know until i got to fl. that my break lights were on all the time and when i would hit the breaks they would go off and then come back on. i took the car to a dealer in fl and they could not dublacate the problem. they did replace the third break light and after researching about the problem i told them to change the break peddle switch. i drove back from fl to pa. with no problems. i know there were recalls about the bcm and did receive other letters that if a break light problem like above would happen to take it to a dealer. this is a very dangerous problem. sent reinversment papers tochev. but they sent me s letter telling me they would not pay for repairs.

My 2009 malibu, which i purchased new in 2009: about 1&1/2 years ago it started running irregular, service esc-service traction messages came on car skidding emblem came on. i have had it to dealership where i bought it 3 times-each time they could find nothing wrong-took it to independent mechanic-he told me same thing. about a week ago i called general motors-first person i talked to said to call nhtsa that they couldn't do anything until a recall. called nhtsa told me to call gm again and start a case: i called and talked to [xxx], who was very helpful and contacted another dealership about fixing my car. i took it to them; they replaced the brake lam switch thinking that would fix it-did not. called gm again and wads told to take it back to dealership that there was nothing they could do as far as cost for fixing it was concerned. my car is just sitting idle because i am afraid to drive it more than a few miles-afraid it will stall out in traffic. i have looked this up on the internet hoping to get some information as to what is wrong. there are numerous people who are having this same problem with their malibus. none of the dealerships seem to know what is wrong and owners are stuck with paying to have numerous things replaced that do not fix the problem. it is timer someone took responsibility for this flaw and issue a recall. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Brake lights, radio, trunk opener on drivers door , left turn signal, doors randomly lock , 3rd brake light dim, sometimes driver door won't open from inside or outside with door unlocked , sometimes drivers door won't shut, 105k miles on this car. this is the most expensive vehicle i've owned and it's the worst vehicle i've ever owned. the drivers door is stuck shut currently.

Driving down an expressway about 60mph and the power steering quit working, a message displayed on my dash "power steering service esc" the abs indicator light also displayed at the same time. i have no power steering. my car has approx 125,000 miles on it. i googled the issue and there was a recall for this issue for 2006-2007 chevy malibus so i contacted the dealer and they said my car does not have a recall for this issue. i do have a recall that i have not had fixed yet for the brake lamp malfunction 13036 which dealer stated is unrelated issue. i see several other people online are reporting this same issue for the 2009 4 cylinder chevy malibu's. i would hope gm will recall this and take care of the problem.

While driving, brake lights will illuminate without depressing them, and brake lights won't illuminate while pressed. opposite of what's supposed to be. this has been intermittent. sometimes brake warning light comes on in dashboard. also the esc light. have an appointment with chevy dealer to repair, but was informed they'll fix if not functioning at time of appointment. it's an intermittent problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while operating the vehicle, the traction control, brake, and esc sensor lights illuminated. also, the brake lights would illuminate even though the brake pedal was not depressed. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, service brakes). the contact stated that the vehicle experienced the same failure listed in the recall. the failure mileage was 179,000. updated 10/04/16*lj *tr

Brake lights go on while driving. then turn off when you hit the brakes to stop or slow down. esc come on while this is happening. dealer states they fixed the recall but it is still happening. now after warranty they say its the abs module

Recall fix failure - the recall fix was applied by the dealership for the 'brake lights may or may not randomly illuminate' issue, nhtsa action 13005, however it is only temporary. after a few months the identical symptoms occur at the same frequency. no new symptoms are present and no previous symptoms are absent. these include; brake lights illuminating with no pressure on the brake pedal, brake lights turning off when pressure is applied to brake pedal (including holding the brakes at a stop), cruise control failing to activate, traction control turning off, esc turning off, and vehicle gearing down (as low as 3rd gear at 60 mph before intervention) to assist by engine braking. most symptoms occur at standstill as well as city and highway speeds. the dealership's stance is that, once a recall is applied, the ticket is closed and is the vehicle owner's responsibility to cover the cost of further fixes.

This is the malibu hybrid with dynamic braking. this has happened twice: going up a hill, the engine seems to lose power, but i believe it is working against the brakes which are being applied and released rapidly. it starts bucking slightly then severely. when i reach the top, i put it in neutral and start coasting and the bucking stops. when i apply the brake to pull over and stop, it starts bucking like it did going up the hill. i get the car stopped, put it in park, turn the engine on, put it in reverse, back up a little, put it in drive, go forward a little, and pull out in traffic and continued about 100 miles to get home. drove into a chevrolet dealership and a very experienced hybrid tech said "never seen this before." he ran the scanner and nothing showed up. it happens so infrequently that i doubt the technician will ever incur the problem if he were to rive the car, this is serious ... only my skillful handling of the incident got me off the road and out of the way although traffic was blowing by me. my guess is a problem in the dynamic braking (e.g when you take your foot off the gas, the "eco" light comes on and the generator on the braking system charges the 24 volt battery.

In december of 2014, a chevrolet dealer performed repairs to address nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (i had not experienced any problems related to this issue at the time). recently i have been experiencing the symptoms related to this recall, including the "service esc" and "service traction" messages, the brake pedal requiring extra pressure to get the vehicle out of park, and the disabling of cruise control. i have not had the opportunity to check if the brake lights also exhibit the problem described in the recall. the problem has triggered while i'm braking, as well as when i was at highway speed with the cruise control engaged, without applying the brakes.

Car would act like brakes were pressed when they weren't. brake lights turn on, cruise control disengages, and the car would downshift. this happened while the car was in park or in motion. then when pressing down on the brake pedal gently, the brake lights would turn off. the brakes were applied, but the brake lights were off. pushing further down on the pedal would make the car respond correctly.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact took the vehicle to be serviced per nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (service brakes). the contact was informed that the high mount brake light failed without warning. it was diagnosed that the high mount brake wiring and the light needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 88,000.

While driving my car the traction control light flashes and the service esc light flashes in the dash of my car. my brake light remain on at all time, when i mash the brakes no brake light comes on. the brake light is doing the opposite of what it is supposed to be doing. this occured months after i had recall work done (at a certified gm dealer) under gm recall number 13036 and nhtsa campaign number 14v252000.

The brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features. this occurs after we have had the work done that was for gm recall number 13036/nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 multiple times.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving at any speed, the brake light illuminated without the brake pedal being depressed. in addition, the instrument panel lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the electronic stability control module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not included in a nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 82,997.

When driving my vehicle the brake lights are currently illuminating without me pressing the brake pedal and not illuminating when i do press the brake pedal (brake light reversal). in addition my electronic stability control (esc) and cruise control turn off. i previously reported this problem to the agency under nhtsa id number 10548365. i had the recall work performed in the summer of 2014. in addition i previously had the brake pedal position sensor replaced prior to that, but it did not fix the problem. the problem has reappeared even though the suggested fix was applied. please note that this problem was originally reported in rhinelander, wi.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the brake lights constantly remained illuminated. prior to the failure, the vehicle was serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control). the contact mentioned that the brake light briefly deactivated when the brake pedal was depressed and illuminated afterwards. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake switch, the brake assembly light, and the multifunction switch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 127,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the warning lights illuminated for the electronic stability control and the service stability traction control. the cruise control also failed to work. when the brake pedal was depressed, the lights did not illuminate and would remain illuminated when the contact was not applying the brakes. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control), manufacturer recall numbers: 103668 (exterior lighting brake lights) and 103664 (service brakes hydraulic and switches). the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy. the approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

There have been multiple repairs done on this car because of recalls and potential recall items. i still owe $7,000 on this vehicle! i feel like the manufacturer owes me money as well as the dealership who fixed the recalled items and the items that are not yet in recall that need to be repaired are going to cause a complete accident if this is not handled promptly. i have two small children and organize volunteer work in my area and do not have the money to fix it. i feel like this is entitled to me and i should not have to have a faulty car when i am also paying on it. i can offer more details when you contact me.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact received a recall repair for nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (service brakes, hydraulic, electrical system, exterior lighting, vehicle speed control, electronic stability control). two years later, the brake lights failed to illuminate when applied, but would illuminate when the brake pedal was not depressed. the service esc and traction control warning indicators flashed. also, the cruise control shut off and operated intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing and repair. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available. updated 11/01/17*lj *cn
