Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact was driving approximately 25 mph when the power steering failed which caused the contact to lose control of the steering wheel into someones yard. the failure occurred whenever the vehicle was in operation. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. there were not related recalls. the technician stated that there would be a service charge for the repairs performed on the vehicle and diagnostic testing. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the vin was unavailable. the failure and current mileage were 58,000.

I own a 2007 chevy malibu i have been having steering failure. research shows recall on later models for same issue but not 2007. the steering will completely fail without notice. i feel this is a very big safety concern and gm says no complaints of my problem. they will investigate but from all research i have done gm will not do anything for this obvious manufacturing defect. i guess when a death occurs they may do something then. who knows i think they should be made to correct the problem. the steering has made a popping noise for a couple of years and now this. after steering fails there is a bell that dings 3 times and then it flashes on radio screen power steering. *tr

I have had my malibu for 3 years and i have 119,000 miles on it. after about 90,000 miles there was a popping clunking in the steering when i turn left or rights and when in reverse. repair shop says a bulletin was issued by gm and they have the part to fix it. cost is about 300.00. there are many other reports of this problem on your site. *tr

Loss of power steering. happened 3 times in 3 months so far. called local dealer and sounds like same issue as the cobalt. said no recall because different components. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering assist failed with the illumination of the power steering warning light. the contact stated that the steering wheel became hard to turn. the electronic power steering assist was previously replaced however the failure was not corrected. the manufacturer advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number 14v047000 (air bags, electrical system). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 89,000 and the current mileage was 149,000. updated 05/19/14*lj the steering wheel positioning sensor needed to be replaced.

I was driving my car and the power steering lock up it was hard for me to turn and a display appear on my radio power steering so i took the car to the dealer and they diagnosed it stating that the power steering motor had went out and something about the steering column the shaft was bad this was in 2010. again i was driving my car this is in 2014 the same thing happen i take the car to the same dealer and they diagnose it this time as a torque sensors but i new something was wrong they did not want the codes to be the same as before so they used another code which is the torque sensors. so i take the car to another chevy dealer and they diagnose the car and said the power steering motor is bad and the steering column is bad just like in 2010 and i no that this dealer is right because the car done the same thing as it did in 2014 as it did in 2010 the first dealer was trying to cover up that it was the same thing so they used different codes. i talk to gm and they agree with the first dealer and said there is nothing they can do i also wrote a letter to [xxx] but i don't think she got it only the sec. i think its sad that they no that there's problem with these cars the 2007 malibu and wont do anything about it. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I purchase this car in 2009 in 2010 i was driving and the steering wheel lock up and then there was a display on the radio power steering i did not have any power steering. so i take the car to the dealer to see what going on and they told me i needed a power steering motor and shaft on steering column worn so i ask is there a recall for this and they said no not on your car.ok so i paid 801.99 to have the car repaired so in dec,2014 i was driving to work and the same thing happen again my steering wheel lock up it was hard for me to keep the car in the lane because the steering wheel would jerk and to turn was very hard so i called gm corporate office to file a complaint are to see if there is a recall. only on 04,05,06,08,09 but not the 2007.but when i google power steering on the malibu all these cars had done the same as mine but there is no recall for 07 malibu. so corporate tells me to take the car to the dealer to get diagnoses and now its the torque sensor which is still in the steering column gm cant pay for it because it a different code then the first time it happen i think it is very dangerous to be driving and the steering wheel lock up while you are driving there should be a recall on 2007 malibu power steering and torque sensor. *tr

Power steering failure while driving on the highway. i pulled over and turned the car off. it scared me. i turned the car on after awhile and it worked just fine. that was 2 weeks ago and now it does it 1 to4 times while iam driving. they said it would cost 500.00 at my auto shop.. i cant afford that. and my passenger side window wont work. the steering going out is a safety issue for my family. i have 3 kids and i don't like when they are in this car. i paid 16,000.00 for this car. i think i got ripped off. i believe gm should recall this everyone seams to have the same problem.*cw

When making sharp turns or parallel parking steering gets tight and power steering light on dash illuminates. code# c0460 retrieved need to replace power steering module. replaced power steering control module. *tr

Yesterday i note that gm will be recalling 1.3 million vehicles owing to a problem with the power steering electric motor with this recall being driven by nhtsa. will the 2007 gm malibu be included? since august 2009, my 2007 gm malibu sedan has developed a "clunking noise" coming from the steering column. in september, 2009 we had a 'lube kit' installed which was suppose to eliminate the clunking. however during november the clunking noise returned aggravated by periodic error messages that state there may be a problem with the electric steering motor. during servicing on jan 4, 2010 the dealer recommends that the "electric motor, steering shaft and column be replaced". however upon several discussions with gm headquarters in oshawa, onto, i am told that " there is an unresolved design problem with the mechanism and any replacement at this time will only be temporary". also "because of no known serious accidents contributed to the mechanism, there will be no recalls or coverage under warranty". upon reviewing a multitude of complaints on the internet (eg: www.carcomplaints.com, etc.) i note that this is a very common problem with this vehicle and with similar responses from gm. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. whenever the contact drove the vehicle at any speed he noticed a clanking sound coming from the center console of the steering wheel. the vehicle was taken to the dealership where the contact was informed that the steering column needed to be replaced. the failure mileage was 50,000. updated 03/12/10. *lj the consumer stated the power steering failed. updated 08/26/10

Chevy needs to widen recent recall of 1.3 million compact cars to include the malibu. i have a 2007 chevy malibu that is currently experiencing all the issues that is included in the recall of the compact cars. my vehicle steering wheel vibrates hard in park at times. on the road, the power steering assist is lost and makes the vehicle hard to hold on the road. there is no warning, the message center displays power steering. took to dealership, they said the power steering motor and steering column needs replacing @ a cost of $750.00. this is a 2007 vehicle, there is no way that the entire steering column needs to be replaced. i have owned several older chevy models, and none of the have this problem. the dealer states that majority of chevy cars made after 2005 has required some type of repair or replacement in the steering area. why is this issue being ignored by chevy? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. when she attempted to make a u-turn she lost power steering without any prior warnings. she drove the vehicle home by making right turns. the vehicle was towed to the dealer, and a technician concluded that the rack and pinion failed. since the warranty does not cover the repair, the estimated cost was $1,188.56. no repairs were made. the current and failure mileages were 60,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the steering column made an abnormal noise and vibration when the steering wheel was turned. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the abnormal noise was due to the steering shaft, which needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 14e044000 (steering), but the vin was excluded. the failure mileage was approximately 37,000.

In january of 2009 i purchased a used 2007 malibu from a dealer. i can't remember how many miles were on it then, but, it was under 28,000 miles. at the end of may of 2009 my power steering failed suddenly while pulling into a parking space. i almost hit the car in the next space. after getting back in the car everything was fine for 2 days when it failed again while driving through a turn around, clicking off then on within seconds. i almost hit the car next to me. it is now september 2009. only 4 months after taking it in to a dealership to have it fixed (fixed may 22nd, 2009 / mileage at the time was 31,086), my power steering is failing again. september 18th, pulling into the parking lot at my job the power steering failed and on the 19th, again, on my way to work on a straight away my car started beeping at me and "power steering" flashed on my display. i have 35,200 miles on my car now and the warranty ends at 36,000. will i have to replace my power steering unit every 4 to 5 months and hope i don't get into an accident? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that noise was inside the steering column and front suspension. she also mentioned that when she started the vehicle it responded as if the steering wheel malfunctioned and when accelerating the steering wheel locked up. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the diagnostic test revealed that the steering gear needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 47, 000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact started the vehicle and noticed that the power steering did not function properly which made it difficult to control the steering wheel. the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. the vin was not available. the current and failure mileages were 40,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. in 2008, the contact heard a clunking noise whenever she turned the vehicle left or right. the vehicle was taken in for service and the strut was replaced. the noise returned and the contact took the vehicle back to the repair shop. she was informed that the failure was not that severe to have to replace the strut again. currently, the noise still persists occasionally. the failure mileage was 61,000. updated 09/01/09. *lj the consumer stated there was a noise coming from the steering when turning from a stop. updated 09/03/09.*jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact was attempting a turn at 10 mph when the steering wheel became extremely stiff. the contact was able to barely maintain control of the vehicle. the dealer replaced the steering column to correct the failure. the contact was able to locate a recall for the failure (nhtsa campaign id number: 10v073000 - steering: electric power assist system) and inquired with the manufacturer about a reimbursement. the manufacturer advised that his vin was not included in the recall and would not provide any further assistance. the failure mileage was 44,000 and the current mileage was 57,000.

Worn intermediate steering shaft causing uneven front tire wear, the car not tracking straight (car would track to the left requiring constant steering correction to the right), and a rattling noise would be heard driving over rough roads. the car dealership replaced the intermediate steering shaft to fix the problem. the dealership kept the old part. loss of steering could have occurred if this part had failed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. while driving at 65 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power steering warning light illuminated. the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 90,000.

Purchased 2007 malibu lt used with 29,097 miles with remainder of factory warranty and extended warranty after that. soon after purchase a popping clunking noise became apparent in the steering mostly when turning either direction. put off by dealer until factory warranty void then was told that steering gear in rack & pinion defective ( this was at 42,509 miles) they then replaced the whole rack and pinion assy. no noise for 3800 miles then right back to where we started. finally received appointment for dealer repair shop at 47,096 miles. car was inspected and we were told that intermediate shaft is making the noise but it "is not a safety concern and we should be fine driving the vehicle" i specifically asked the service desk at the dealer if there might be a safety recall or service bulletin and was told that there were none. your web site shows service bulletin #060232007 that directly pertains to this problem, and also complaint # 10257971 that is precisely what our problem is. this noises we contend with are not some little wimpy things that you can only hear with the windows up, but loud enough for persons standing on the sidewalk or driveway to hear plainly my wife and i are both disabled and we are almost afraid to go anywhere in the vehicle for fear of a breakdown, not to mention anybody riding with us. i was told by the dealer that we would have to pay (again) for more repair to the steering, but that it was an ongoing engineering problem that gm has had for years, and they couldn't (or wouldn't?) guarantee that it (the problem ) wouldn't crop up again later. we would just like to spread the word to other gm owners. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the steering wheel would fail intermittently while exhibiting an abnormal clicking when turned. the steering gear was replaced but the failure recurred several months after repairs. the dealer then added lubrication to the steering column which lasted for 40,000 miles before the failure recurred. the failure mileage was 24,000 and the current mileage was 80,000.

When i would turn a corner the steering wheel would vibrate. i took it to get a wheel alignment thinking that was the problem. as time went by it got harder to steer, the steering wheel would jerk. it was getting so hard to drive i was afraid to take it anywhere.i had to go to olympia for supplies. i was driving from my home in grapeview to olympia and the wheel pulled so violent on hwy 101 i was afraid i would drive into another car.it was mostly jerking to the right so i stayed in the right lane so i wouldn't hit another car but just go off the hwy. it pulled so fast and hard it hurt my wrists. i would have called for a tow but didn't have my cell phone. i was closer to olympia than home so i made the decision to go there. i drove it to the titis-will chevrolet in olympia and they advised me to leave it there because it was too dangerous to drive. and they repaired it a few days later. i read on the internet others were having the same problem but chevrolet company wouldn't help them. *tr

Tl*-the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the dealer had to replace the rack and check alignment and adjust the toe because the power steering rack assembly was grinding. the contact wanted other malibu owners to know what happen to her vehicle. the failure mileage was 46,000

Bought the car in 2007. no known cause of this problem. electronic steering goes out. steering wheel starts to shake, and jerks back and forth. it causes me to weave from side to side. the car sometimes steers fine, then out of the blue, it acts up again. this is a very dangerous problem. i have found that this is a widespread concern. *tr

On my 2007 chevrolet malibu ltz the electronic power steering motor shuts off while driving at anytime, only way to get power back to steering is to shuts off vehicle and restart it, but only works for 5 to 10 minutes again and will do the same thing, almost got into accidents at least 5 times when shuts off while steering, but does go off all the time. took it to 2 chevrolet dealership and both denied to be a safety issue cover by warranty and that i should pay them $980 for repairs. steering rack was replaced twice but the problem was diagnosed later is the steering motor/module. i even contact gm and they acted like they could fix it for me, they even sent me to another dealership in my area for "proper diagnosis", i remained them that i knew what the problem was and what was need it to repair but they told me to go ahead and drop my car with them and let them diagnose the problem, 7 days later i got a called form the dealer saying that the repair will cost me around $900 (which i knew that was what they charge). i told them that gm sent me to them and they will contact them, i asked gm again and they said that they receive the work order but they were sorry but they were not going to assist me with my issue because vehicle was over warranty. my car is a 2007 and the first time i complaint was on 2009. when offcourse warranty was still in effect (car has 100,000 miles warranty but only covers engine and transmission). the only reason gm acted like they were concerned was because i filed a complaint with the bbb, because i contact them before i contact the bbb and they refuse even to talk about it. after i filed the complaint with the bbb magically they called me and pretend they were concerned. anyway after they denied to cover the repairs i went to pick my car up and the dealer wanted to charge me $150. i denied to pay because gm sent me i didn't request the diagnosis, i paid it once already. anyway now gm recalls a cobalt with same issue but not malibus. *tr

2007 malibu-started hearing popping when turning in 2009, a year after i bought the car. "loer i-shaft replaced. car continues to pop and i have lost the ability to steer my car. now told it is the steering column and gear. apparently not covered by warrenty. i have found several complaints of this issue and believe it is a true defect that gm needs to recall and take care of for the safety of me and my daughter. could potentially cause a wreck if steering goes out while in twon or on the highway. *tt

2007 chevy malibu loss of power steering around turns under acceleration. dealer can not duplicate. date of incident around jan. 09 and happens 2-3 times per week. very dangerous. *tr

Randomly every now and then the steering wheel will move back and forth on it's on when sitting in park. while driving the steering wheel will start to move as well and start jerking to one side causing you to swerve back and forth a little while you fight it. i have done research, this is happening to others of this model as well if you search the internet. as well as a youtube video which the same thing can be seen on a 2008 malibu at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=px6uegwmvbi

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. while driving at an unknown speed, the contact heard rattling noises from the front end and the steering column. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where it was repaired (repair details were not given). shortly after, the vehicle was taken in for routine maintenance and the contact was informed that the front passenger tie rod and steering knuckle needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. upon receiving the vehicle back, the contact began to hear rattling noises from the front end and steering wheel intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the steering module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure continued. the failure mileage was approximately 45,000 and the current mileage was approximately 60,000. the vin was unavailable.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact was driving at 25 mph when the vehicle exhibited a popping noise at the front end and the wheels wobbled. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnostic that located the failure at the intermediate steering shaft. the dealer replaced the steering shaft and the tires were replaced several times, but the failure was not corrected. the manufacturer was contacted and advised the contact to take the vehicle back to the dealer for further inspection. the dealer performed a second diagnostic that located the failure as the front lower ball joint, tie rods and the steering column having to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 34,000 and the current mileage was 76,600. updated11/29/11 *bf updated 12/02/11

Steering problems on a 2007 chevy malibu..starting approx. 2 years ago..fall of 2008..taken to certified chevy dealer four times has been "fixed". in spring 2010 power steering motor replaced twice...taken back to certified dealer on 8/2/10 to have rack and pinion fixed for 2nd time as well.. *tr

Intermediate shaft went out. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that he intermittently heard a noise coming from the steering column. in may 2008, the dealer made two attempts to duplicate the failure and replaced the steering shaft. the failure recurred. the manufacturer was aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 32,892 and the current mileage was 68,860.

I have a 2007 chevy malibu. i bought the car 2 1/2 yrs. ago. it had 12,000 miles on it at the time. we were told at 33,000 miles that it needed a new steering gear, which we did, then at 35,000 miles a strut was replaced, then in 2009 another steering gear was put in and also a few months later it was yet again doing the same thing so they greased it..... now they say we need a steering shaft put in.....gm should recall all these vehicles.....i for one am filing a complaint with the bbb and will never own a gm product again....i as well, will do my best to deter anyone i know from owning a gm product! *tr

While driving and turning, the power steering failed on my 2007 chevy malibu making turning virtually impossible manually. once i was able to stop the vehicle, i put it in park and tried the steering - no change. i shut off the vehicle and turned it back on and the power steering reset. this has occurred 5 times in the past two weeks. if i am setting still, i can turn the steering wheel completely to the left and the power steering will fail. also i have noticed during driving and still (waiting at a light) the steering wheel tends to pulsate back and forth. i reported this to dealership a month ago when vehicle was oil serviced. they said they found nothing at that time. i see from research there were a lot of complaints with the 2004 model, but cannot find any remedy. after reading other complaints, i am very concerned about the safety of this vehicle. i have read where other vehicles have crashed due to this and i prefer to not be involved in an accident thus killing someone in my car or another. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. when driving at various speeds, the contact noticed that the steering wheel would suddenly turn in either direction without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on several occasions where the steering shaft, and steering column were replaced; however, the failure continued to recur. the current mileage was 44000 and the failure mileage was 2300.

Loss of power steering. problem started shortly after purchase. went several times to ferman dealer on sr60 in brandon, florida, from where purchase was made. took several visits before they stated they detected the problem, which was a wire that was touching steering column. days later it occurred again and have been occurring intermittently since. the safety issue here is immense. let alone, you get no enjoyment in driving. there have been numerous complaints about same for a number of years, some with accidents. does there have to be a loss of life in order for the manufacturer to step to the plate and correct this problem? please help us! we need a voice! *tr

I bought the car in december 2007, within 30 days, i took it in for a clunking noise in the steering, when going over bumps @ low speed. also clunks when turning wheel sharply. over a course of 11 months, i took the car in for the same problem 4 times! they replaced steering shafts, columns, lubed, re-aligned, the works! and every time, within 3000 miles, the noise is back. this all started when it was under warranty and continued through past my warranty. i have the extended warranty, but it's a $100 deductible. everytime i took it after the "free" warranty was up(3 times) i've had to fight with the dealership on having my deductible covered. the service department manager told me it was a common problem with these cars(the steering)and there isn't much they can do about it. i've been all over the internet, only to find out there are alot of the same exact complaints. is this something i have to deal with? it definitely makes me not want to buy gm products. if they are aware of this problem, why can't it be fixed?? *tr

I have a 2007 chevy malibu ltz. the steering column has locked up several times. the worse time happened about a week ago. i was having the brakes checked and the repair man drove the car and when he mashed the accelerator the cars steering locked up and he had to fight it to keep from hitting a block and concrete wall. he said the car was very unsafe to drive. i took it to the car dealer where i bought the car and they said it was the ignition switch. i was wondering if you have heard if gm is aware of this problem and if there has been a recall on this thank you. *tr

Steering cuts in and out in an unpredictable way. *tr

Car was being driven regularly. the failure has progressed everyday for about a month. i took it to the shop yesterday to find out that the problem is the drive shaft and bearings on the tire. the car is being repaired, at 40,000 miles. this is a 2007 vehicle! *tr

We do not like the electronic steering, the car does not hold the road well, we've had no accidents with it, but when we had it checked at the dealers they told us it was ok.. we still are not happy with it. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu lt. while driving 20 mph, the steering wheel locked. the failure is intermittent and has occurred on several occasions. the most recent failure occurred in the middle of an intersection. the vehicle was taken to two dealers and both were unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer advised the contact to keep taking the vehicle to the dealer until the failure can be diagnosed. the current mileage was 19,415 and failure mileage was 14,000. updated 11/1/07 *tr
