We have classified the 590 complaints from 2007 Chevrolet Malibu about STEERING into the following categories.
Intermittent electric power steering failures. the failures occurred at random, and always resulted in the electric power steering deactivating, a power steering warning message on the message center, and eventually the power steering system returning to operation. after attempting a repair, the power steering now tries to move the steering wheel to the left lock position. after contacting gm, i was informed that this was not a safety problem and since the vehicle has a branded title, the power steering cannot be repaired at no cost to me. *tr
The power steering failed while driving on the interstate at about 60 miles per hour. the power steering warning advisory on the dash displayed and had no power steering. it is very difficult to control the car when it comes to turning and it takes a lot of force. i see a lot of complaints for this year model yet there is a warranty for the 2005, 2006 and the 2008 models, this under #10183a special coverage adjustment ? power steering assist in may 2012. so why is the 2007 excluded, has to be an oversight? please make this right! also called gm and took the car to the local dealership no help there - no recall. *tr
I was driving my 2007 malibu and turning a corner when the power steering went out. luckily i was in an area with no other vehicles at the time. i was able to get the vehicle home, when i started it again the power steering was working. this seems to be a common problem with this make and model from what i have read. the power steering goes out while driving and comes back on after restarting the car. the issue recurs without warning. it is very dangerous and could cause a serious accident. there should be a recall on the 2007 for this known issue. *tr
I was driving my car and the power steering went out and i hit an embankment. the dash dinged to let me know that it had went out. it comes and goes when it goes out. it will stay on and then it will go out. when it does go out the dashboard indicator will ding and let me know. *tr
Pulling out of parking space had no power steering nearly impossible to turn, thought it was low on power steering fluid so pulled into mechanics garage, was told the malibu has electrical steering and had probably needed to be replaced. started car back up, and power steering has been working since. needs to be fixed by gm very dangerous, you cannot turn wheel when electrical steering goes out. terrible. *tr
Power steering went out. has happened on numerous occasions. should be part of the recall, but is not. illuminates power steering on digital notification system. *tt
Power steering went out, took to dealer said it was the steering column. does not feel safe to drive will have to repair and call gm. even though online everyone says they will not fix it unless they are forced to recall. so please, everyone with this problem needs to start getting loud this is an unsafe vehicle and needs to be fixed!!!!!! *tr
Steering wanted to turn/jerk to left than right almost lost control of car and many other times the steering gets stiff and is very hard to turn. *tr
I was attempting to pass a truck blocking my lane. after waiting a few minutes, i heard an alarm chiming with the message "power steering" displayed on my radio screen. i felt a slight vibration in the steering wheel, and had no power steering assist, and struggled to turn the wheel to go around the truck. i then shut and then restarted the engine and the power steering returned to normal. a few days later, i had the car checked by the dealer and they could find no error codes. the dealership and the chevrolet customer service representative acted as if my problem was unique. this was despite that they twice changed major parts of the eps under warranty for the previous owners of the car in 2007, and 2008 in which the car was towed to the dealership. i can not understand why 2005, 2006, and 2008 malibus have been recalled and 2007 malibus were not despite the many complaints for loss of eps located on websites all over the internet. if loss of controlled steering is not a safety issue, then what is? *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the fuel gauge was defective and would show that the fuel tank was empty when it was full. also, the contact mentioned that the power steering would fail and would cause it to become very difficult to maneuver the steering wheel. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 105,000 and the current mileage was 120,000.
The steering wheel jerks back and forth while driving at any speeds. will even jerk back and forth when stopped at a red light. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering caused extreme difficulty in turning the vehicle on multiple occasions. the sensor light illuminated on the instrument panel for the power steering more than once at random. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who was not able to replicate the failure. the contact was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 14v15300 (steering) and had continued to experience the same failure at random. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100000.
I've had more then one case were this has happened but the first time it did it when i was driven down the street and the steering wheel yanked my steering wheel to the right while i was driven forcing me off the road. good thing it did not cause me to hit a car or anything else . the steering jerks even when the car is just sitting in park . you could be going 0 miles to 60 miles it does it does it about 10 to 12 times a day . i was told by gm customer service these is a know issue but no recall on electric steering yet . i fear for my life i have only had the car 1 week and i'm not sure why there is not recall on the 2007 chevy malibu ltz. i called the dealer i got it from and they told me that issue was know but no repair needed. *js
Driving on freeway steering off to access road, when steering wheel started alternating between pulsating and locking up. managed to gear into side of road.i was scared.checked tires. i did not have a blow out. called family at the hospital, where my mom was dying, told them i was going back home.drove real slow with emergency lights on.steering wheel would start gyrating at times.thought all it needed was an alignment.got a estimate in access of 700.00. another good mechanic stated it did not seem like that was the problem as he checked it well.well i got a big lemon.p.s. after the first incident i parked it for a long time. *tr
I was getting ready to leave my house in my 2007 chevy malibu and when i went to turn my wheel to get out of my driveway i could not turn it. i pulled back in the driveway and tried again, same thing. we had a friend come over with a diagnostic and it was the electrical power steering. from reading all of the other numerous comments, i am surprised there is not a recall on this issue. hoping gm does something about this.
I was changing the lane. steering loose contact with wheel. wheel turned without any control. luckily no accident. brake worked. i stopped the car and started again. it worked fine. there should be recall for this type of inident
Power steering continues to light up on radio from time to time and makes car difficult to turn. it usually happens when i first start my car starts then goes a way a few minutes after starting. was only happening like once every 2 weeks but it has been becoming a common occurrence lately. *tr
As the car was being driven from my driveway to the road, the power steering failed. the power steering display came on. the car was reversed back into the driveway. the car was turned off and restarted and another attempt was made, but the power steering failed again. i understand that a warranty extension for date and mileage have been offered to owners of the 2005,2006,and 2008 models. #10183a: special coverage adjustment - power steering assist - (may 23, 2012) why would the 2007 model be excluded? the replacement part is identical for all four years. *js
For over a year, my 2007 chevy malibu ls v6 has had a problem with the power steering going out intermittently without warning for a few seconds at a time. this as resulted in a couple of near accidents--one which would have flipped the car had i not wrestled the steering wheel into compliance. i have had the car at a certified gm dealership on three occasions complaining of this problem. the first time they drove the car and said that they could not duplicate the problem, and gave it back to me. second time they did duplicate the problem and charged me a hefty bill to replace the power steering motor. the third time, after the installation of the new power steering motor they essentially said they made some "adjustments." nevertheless, the problem has persisted. i spoke to the service manager at the dealership who basically said there was nothing they could do (read, "would do"), and all he was authorized to do was to give me a voucher towards the purchase of any vehicle on their lot, new or used. that does little to solve my problem. i join my voice to the chorus of complains about the power steering in this 2007 chevrolet malibu--which is not the only gm vehicle with this issue. will we have to wait until the body count piles up over this problem before gm is required by the nhtsa to recall these vehicles for proper repairs? *tr
Power steering goes out-steering wheel shakes violently and vehicle is extremely hard to steer and control. reported this problem via complaint with ntsb and with gm in august 2013. was advised to have diagnostic testing completed on car. did that ($110). now gm is recalling this defect on all years except 2007. why? same issue as other model years. gm diagnostics provided report that states power steering column should be replaced. this is no different than all of the other power steering issues in all other model years. the 2007 model should not be excluded!! recall this year as well!! *tr
The power steering stopped working all of a sudden. when i got to work i shut the engine off, and when i got off work the power steering was working fine. since then it has stopped and started working multiple times. it will no longer reset when i shut the engine off, and restart it. we thought it was the eps fuse, but i had it tested and the service tech it was fine. *tr
Warning signal dinged and display reads power steering. steering wheel jerks to right and left uncontrollably at all speeds. power steering is going out on this vehicle. my research indicates that many, many complaints have been logged on this issue and that gm has acknowledged the issue with other ntsb required recalls with other makes and model years dating back to 2004. this is a defective system, highly dangerous. i am a working mother of two and this is my only mode of transportation. i have paid faithfully on my vehicle and deserve a vehicle that is trustworthy and safe for me and my children! this is highly dangerous in that the steering will eventually seize up and a crash is all but likely that could result in death or serious bodily injury. research indicates the cost of repair at the dealership ranges from $600 to $1200 - money i do not have. gm/chevy refuse to issue recall until the ntsb requires it. please require it!! why should some have to die in a crash for this issue to be corrected??? gm has already acknowledged the issue dating back to 2004 and yet continues to manufacture cars using defective components that are extremely dangerous. i cannot afford the cost of this repair. please issue recall! i am driving a death trap. until the ntsb requires the recall, gm will continue to place the life of those in their vehicles at risk! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering light illuminated as the vehicle became hard to maneuver. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. no repairs were done to the vehicle.the manufacture was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage 143,000.
The power steering went out and jerked my car into a guard rail. *tr
Was following another auto that suddenly hit the brakes and when i tried to steer the car around, i could hardly turn the steering wheel momentarily. have also found it hard to turn when starting in the morning. *tr
So was driving and the whole steering wheel froze almost ran into a girl in the parking lot..no manual steering nothing...contacted gm customer service at 1-800-222-1020 that was a joke. all they do is play games. my case number is [xxx] just wanted gm to pay for the defective parts. gm did recall 2004,2005,2006 and 2008 then in 2009 put in the power steering fluid instead of this electrical power steering...gm never recalled the 2007 ever though had the same problem as the other years that they did recalled..i have spent over $2000.00 to get a defective part fixed.[xxx] specialist supervisor is a lame title for a customer service he called the dealer to have them cover the cost and then told the dealer that g< will not pay never contacted me...then i tired to get another customer service rep and e/maile gm and all they did was referred back to kevin which i have never heard from...never----ever buy a gm vehicle. i my son, daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren could of died in this car cause it freezes the whole sterring column. can you imagine if i was on the freeway what might of happened? information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
The power steering went out with no warning in the middle of a right turn. this is very dangerous. i looked on the internet and there are a ton of complaints about this. i suggest you people get a recall notice from gm quickly. get moving pronto......lots of accidents and near accidents. *tr
While driving on the 91 freeway, the power steering went out causing the vehicle to jerk to the right and i nearly collide with the vehicle to my right. in addition the fuel gauge and the engine light came on. *tr i notified gm asking to please take some responsibility since many other drivers are experiencing the same problem, and the defective parts could cause an accident with serious consequences. the response that i received was that it is the government responsibility to place a recall and not theirs. *tr
I continually experience sudden power loss while driving my 07 malibu which my dashboard alerted power steering lost. at first this would happen randomly, however it has progressively gotten worse especially in warmer temps. i can no longer parallel park as the manual steering is much to hard. i'm scared to make any sharp turns as loss of power generally happens at that time.it's extremely terrifying to know at any minute my steering can go out while going 60 mph on a highway (which has happened) and i cannot maneuver my vehicle how it's suppose to maneuvered. why are all other model years being recalled but not the 2007 model year????? dealership will fix the issue at my own expense which is close to $1,000 as the entire steering column needs to be replaced. *tr
Diving down the road and the steering just stopped working,it was very hard to steer, this not safe at all, does some one have to die before they do a recall. *tr
The power steering had gone out repeatedly at different times, both while driving and not. it would come back on at times and now for the last 5 months has been out completely and is a danger to drive. it is my only vehicle and i drive 3 children around regularly. it is nearly impossible for someone of my strength and size to drive. i fear it is a matter of time before we have an accident. i was absolutely amazed to see there was not a recall on my make and year but every other year malibu. Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving 15 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn and would shake while parked. the failure occurred on three occasions. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where they performed a steering calibration of the sensors. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 87,000.
The power steering light comes on the radio intermittently, then i hear the alert and a click in my steering wheel and then i lose power steering. this happens while driving without warning. *tr
Driving in a straight line on a paved road and all of a sudden there was a ding and the words power steering appeared on the dash. within seconds i could not steer the vehicle. i was able to pull over safely as there was very little traffic, but i couldn't turn the steering wheel. had vehicle towed to garage. if i had been in heavier traffic or trying to negotiate a bend/curve in the road or been negotiating a turn across traffic this incident could have had a tragic outcome. garage repaired vehicle but it has happened again today and we have to replace the steering column at great expense. called chevy but they say there isn't a recall however it appears that the earlier and later models have been recalled for the same safety issue! researched online today and there appear to many complaints of accidents and near misses for the same issue of the 2007 models. this needs looking into urgently before someone loses their life. *tr
I own a 2007chevy malibu that apparently is not recalled. i have had on several occasions while turning the steering wheel locks up and the power steering message shows up. luckily i have been in non-busy areas when this happens as i have to turn the car off and re start the car. sometimes i have to do this several times. sometimes the steering wheel will pull twitch the left by itself and is very loose. i have taken my car in several times to be looked at. i feel unsafe to drive my car in fact i will not drive it. i have two children that i would not put in that car. so i would like to know how i am supposed to get to work and take my children to school, sports, etc. when i do not have a safe car to drive, while gm tries to decide which cars they will fix. this is unacceptable. i feel compensation is needed for the inconveniences they have created. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the steering wheel would seize. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and they stated that the steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified but provided no assistance. the failure mileage was 106,000. updated 06/18/13*lj the consumer is a car dealer who claims to have come upon another chevrolet malibu with the same condition. updated 06/20/2013 *js
While i was entering the cloverleaf ramp of the highway my power steering stopped working. luckily i was able to get it under control before going off the road. warning on the dash said "power steering" it is an electrical assist power steering unit. i was able to pull over and restart the car and the steering started to work again. short while later while driving down the highway it quit again. it's been intermittently working ever since. *tr
As driving down the road the steering locked up and could not steer. drove home and parked the car it was leaking on the manifold pipe. they wanted $1,000.00 to fix it and would not work with us as we are on a fixed income they eventually came and reposessed the vehicle in the none working condition and hauled it off. *js
Please help. i was leaving the bank when the steering wheel locked itself (it read on the monitor power steering) and i could not move my car luckily i was able to move forward and found a parking space in the street. i was there for about 1.5 hrs when i decided to drive it home i did not move my car for 2 days and started using it just to go to work then in happened to me again twice. i am no longer using the car. *tr
Driving down the highway and the steering went out. completely unable to turn the steering wheel in any direction so my daughter had to coast until the car slowly drifted to the shoulder of the road. she had absolutely no control of the car. having it repaired and it is the power steering motor. it is an electric asst motor. it is a $800 repair. i am lucky that of my three daughters that drive she is the one with better judgment and thinking. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact was driving approximately 60 mph and experienced a complete loss of power steering with the illumination of the power steering warning indicator. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer, who advised the contact that the power steering motor would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 107,000.
I was driving at 55mph when i lost my power steering. this now happens within 5 minutes of driving. when i shut the car off and back on i have power steering for approx 5-10 minutes. when i do have power steering the steering wheel vibrates really bad and moves on its own. i drive 600 miles a week to work on a highway. this is not safe. i called gm and they said to have a diagnostic test done, i did this on friday 1 25 13. the code was co545. there has already been a recall on 2006 for the same reason, the power steering mechanism should not go out on a car that is 6 years old. *tr
Electric power steering assist fails intermittently to operate. no power assist when vehicle is started. requires waiting from 30 seconds to 3 minutes for system to function. *tr
Re: chevy malibu 2007 power steering motor needs to be recalled immediately! when passing on highway, the steering locked and made a rattling sound in front driver side, i had to force steering around the vehicle i was passing or i would have hit the other vehicle. the steering was not operating safely. this could have been a bad accident. i took to my malibu to an auto repair, they looked for recalls and checked for warranty of the power steering motor, but none was found for this model/make/year. the power steering motor had to be replaced, the day after i almost had the accident. i was afraid to drive it. i looked on-line at home and saw that the cobalt and other make/model/year had been recalled for a defective power steering motor in canada-the united states needs to recall this in the states. there may already have been fatal accidents caused by the defective power steering motor. if my daughter or son had been driving this could have been a deadly accident, since the steering was out of control. get this recall done for the power steering motor on the chevy malibu 2007. there is a defective power steering motor in the chevy malibu 2007 and it should be recalled immediately! i contacted gm, and gm said there was no recall on this model/make/year. i reported that my power steering motor had to be replace for $867.51 to gm and requested a reimbursement from gm on the expense that were incurred, but was denied by a tier one gm customer service person and also his supervisor in the tier one gm department.- i wonder how many tiers you have to go through to get action done. gm customer service said it takes a long time for recalls through the government. i hope it doesn't. i told gm, they should be taking care of this by going to the top at gm to get the recall done, before more accidents or deaths are caused by this defect. get this recall done! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while turning at a traffic light, the power steering failed and the vehicle stalled. the contact mentioned that the power steering warning lamp was illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the technician diagnosed that the steering system was defective. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was unknown.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the steering failed while driving 30-35 mph. the failure initiated as an intermittent failure, but over time became a permanent failure. the power steering warning light illuminated before the failure occurred and the steering wheel would become hard to turn. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where a diagnostic test was performed, which located the failure as the steering wheel position sensor. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure was experienced numerous times. the failure mileage was 110,000 and the approximate current mileage was 111,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering assist failed while driving 65 mph. the steering wheel became hard to turn as the power steering warning light illuminated. the contact was able to drive the vehicle home. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 125,000.
While driving my car in town going around 25-35 mph, the steering wheel became hard to control. the on board display showed "power steering". after a while the power steering turned back on. after a few weeks of this happening the power steering only works for the first few seconds when the car is started then you can hear a "click" sound in the steering column and the power steering turns off. took to dealer #1, advised the entire steering column needs replaced. took to dealer ship #2, advised the power steering module needs replaced. tried switching out the fuses for the power steering, still no good. advised that this is an electric power steering and there is no power steering fluid or pump. advised by gm to take to dealer ship and have it looked at. est. cost to fix power steering is roughly $700 out of pocket. i currently don?t have $700 to throw at my car and still drive with no power steering. gm as recalled chevy malibu for power steering all except the year 2007. this needs looked into as it seems that there 2007 year is having problems as well. *tr
I got in my car to go to work and when i started it the message power steering showed up on the dic. i shut off the car and restarted it to no avail. later in the day when i started my vehicle the power steering was back but the steering would pulse back and forth and eventually the message appeared again and i lost power steering. i believe this should be recalled because the power steering goes in and out randomly and when not expecting it could cause an accident and because it happens at all speed it could ultimately lead to death. i know there is a bulletin out for this type of problem but i don't see how and ignition coil has anything to do with the power steering. *tr
