Omg i cannot believe nothing has been done about the power steering on the 2007 malibu going out while you are driving. how many complaints are required for something to be done? i thought buy american was going to be the best. gm fooled me. i have had several issues with vibrations, brakes, drums, rotors, steering column gears but this mornings near miss accident just takes the cake. i am driving to work 5:30am on interstate 58 in suffolk, va doing 60 when all of a sudden the wheel jerks me into the next lane of traffic almost driving under an 18 wheeler. i grasp the steering wheel as tight as i can trying to pull back into my lane with the wheel fighting me back and forth. what a horrific experience. i pull off (shaking my --- off) make a phone call, sit for 1/2 hour (still afraid to drive). while the car is idling the wheel is bouncing back and forth in park. i put it in drive with my foot held tightly on the brake and it is still jumping. put it back in park. build up a little nerve. put it back in drive and start to drive. everything is fine. get to work 5 minutes from there only to find that my car has an electronic power steering? some moron must have dreamt this up and gm needs to correct this horrible power assist crap before someone gets killed if they haven't already. i am not very happy with my chevy malibu and i think a class action lawsuit needs to be filed for all chevy malibu owners to make gm make corrections on this life threatening situation. action needs to be taken now!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *tr

2007 chevrolet malibu. consumer states problems with electric power steering *tgw
Power steering trouble - 2007 chevy malibu. wheel is tight when starting the car, can hear a click in the dash and then the wheel is loose and can steer. the power steering warning appears on the information center. happened twice so brought the car to the dealer (still under warranty). they found a code for a possible power steering malfunction and tightened a ground wire. the problem continued with greater frequency. brought car back to dealer twice. they were unable to diagnose the problem as there was no code in the computer and the problem did not occur while there. the problem continued to occur and grew progressively worse where i had to sit for several minutes waiting for the click and the wheel to release. at times i would turn the car off and back on to try to reset it but it did not seem to help. the power steering warning appears on the dash after starting the car (though sometimes several minutes later) as well as several times while driving even though there is no difficulty steering. returned car to dealer and received a loaner vehicle until they resolve the issue. *tr
Was driving and went to turn left and the power steering went out. it has an electronic power steering system. i turned the car off and then turned it back on and it reset the steering and the message was removed from the display. it has occured 15 times now. would like to know if there is a recall. *tr

Power steering my car kept goin in and out.feb 8 it went out completely and almost caused me to wreck.online research lead me to believe chevrolet is aware of problems with the electronic power steering problems with the malibu. have been many complaints online and called chevys customer service number and local dealership, the car can not be drove due to feeling very unsafe in turns and if it locked up all together. also fromwhat i have read the problem has gotten fixed with consumers out of pocket money and the problem rearise shortly thereafter. *tr
The steering on my 2007 chevy malibu locked up on me as i was driving down the road, it did it again as i was turning in the parking lot. it has done this several times in the past. it also makes a loud clunking noise when i turn the steering wheel sometimes. *tr
Just bought my chevrolet 2007 malibu and it has been making a popping noise in the steering when making turns and driving. i have read online about numerous people having the same problem with these vehicles, and in some instances even causing them to crash. *tr
The power steering failed, i was advised by dealership that the repairs are $864.00 i was advise the power steering is an electrical system and needs to be repaired. *tr
I have problem with power steering for chevy malibu 2007 sometimes its luck up when im driving or when im turn left or right and making noise. *tr
I was in a crowded parking lot and suddenly lost power steering. i nearly hit a pedestrian because i was in the middle of a turn. the power steering continues to fail without warning. when doing some research online about this i found hundreds of entries of the same problem. there are recalls on other models and other years, just not the 2007 malibu that i have. this electric power steering can fail at any time and is a very dangerous issue. the repair is expensive ($1300.00) and will not prevent additional failures.
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. while driving 35 mph, the power steering locked suddenly. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who repaired the steering three times. they were constantly repairing the steering motor. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 50,000.
2007 chevy malibu is having problems with the power steering going out when taking right turns. i really did not have this problem until the winter season, not saying that's the cause of the malfunction. in the mornings when i crank up before going to work, the steering wheel will move side to side motion for about 15 minutes. the power steering usually goes out when taking right turns. never had the power steering go out when i turn left. this has been going on every since the early part of december 2010. on the day that it first happened, i pulled to the side of the road an contacted gm about the problem and wanted to know if their were a recall to the specific model. the customer service rep acted as if he never heard of the problem. i did a little research and found that their are other gm cars that have problems with the power steering as well. chevy is fully aware of the problem. i guess that it will have to be national coverage on the news for any action to be taken. this car is in fairly new condition and should not be having these problems. i'm just happy that my girlfriend was not driving at the time. she is very tiny, and not as strong as i. this problem needs to be rectified asap. here is the youtube link of actual footage of this problem happening http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly0lrqqx9rq. *tr
2007 chevrolet malibu, when turning left i am experiencing a loud pop sound and after reading several other complaints of this same sort of issue, possible loss off power steering and loss of control of car, intermediate steering linkage issue. this is not good. has gm sent out a recall on the trouble? if not they should. *tr
The first incident occurred in 2010, but has progressively become worse and most constant. the vehicles electrical steering will shake and jerk uncontrollably at times. the car does not always shake and jerk, but this occurs at least once per day. some days it will shake and jerk non stop for long periods of time, others it will be short and quick. the car generally will shake and jerk for a few minutes, then will display on the display "power steering" and chime. the shaking occurs while driving and also when in park. depending on the severity, the jerking can jolt the car into that direction. this is a safety hazard as it is very possible that this could cause an accident. the jerks are not controllable by two hands. often while driving, the car looks as if it is jerking back and forth in its lane due to the rough jerking of the steering wheel. this is the most nerve racking while driving in weather such as snow or rain, where the road is slick or slippery. having the car jerk around on ice is just an accident waiting to happen. when the problem first occurred, i took my vehicle to a gm dealership and had it inspected. the mechanic told us that the only option was to replace the entire steering column but they could not say if this would fix the issue. after reviewing many complaints and concerns online, i researched for recalls. i found that many models similar to ours have been recalled, but not our specific year. *tr
Steering has been loose while turning left and tighter when turning right since i first got this vehicle. on nov,4 2010 i was pulling out of store and accelerated the steering seems to have locked up and rendered me unable to steer pulled on side of the road to calm down then began driving again when accelerating the steering lock up again. brought vehicle to gm repair shop they said the steering motor and steering shaft were not working properly and need to be replaced. *tr
Power steering fails constantly . the only wat to get it to work again is to shut engine off and restart, however this is only works for a very short time(less than 1 mile of driving ) in my research on this problem i have seen gm has recalled several other models(2005-10 cobalt and some pontiacs) for exact same problem. no crash or injuries have occcured yet. we do not drive the vehicle any more than necessary. very difficult to turn corners and manuever parking lots. will be impossible to control on ice & snow. this is an accident waiting to happen. this came on suddenly and without warning. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. when the contact started the ignition, a chime sounded inside of the vehicle with an illumination of the power steering warning indicator. there was a complete loss of the power steering. the failure occurred three times with loss of the power steering when driving at various speeds. the power steering would reset when the engine was turned off. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 40,000.
On several occasion the power steering indicator light comes on. when the driver resort to the manual to find the power steering reservoir, it clearly states its location. the chevy 2007 malibu that the driver owns does not have a power steering reservoir. the dealer was consulted there is a problem because the manual states it has a power steering reservoir but the dealer could not find it. gm was consulted about the matter and said there is a recall and problem but not on the 2007 model. the car has become considerably harder to steer but gm will not as of yet resolve this issue. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. while turning right at an unknown low speed, the steering wheel became very stiff and the power steering light illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact pulled over and turned the vehicle off. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the steering column was defective. the vehicle was being repaired. the failure and current mileages were approximately 78,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the electronic power assist failed. the steering wheel shook and sporadically seized. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer where it was determined that the electronic power assist needed to be replaced. the contact also stated that the fuel gauge would provide inaccurate fuel level readings and would only provide readings of either full or empty. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for the fuel gauge failure. the failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 116,089. *tr
I have a 2007 chevy malibu with steering problems. for a long time is has made a popping noise when turning the steering wheel at any speed. i took it to gm several months ago and they made some type of adjustment and it stopped. it has recently started again. a couple weeks ago when driving on the interstate the steering wheel began to move left to right by itself. i could feel the car move also. it will also do this when the car is running idle. it has done this several times now. when this occurred i could definitely feel a loss of control with the vehicle. it is my understanding many people are experiencing many steering problems with this vehicle and gm will not do anything about it. they told me the cost to replace the steering column is around $1000 at the owners expense. this is a very serious safety issue and should be recalled and repaired by gm. *tr
1. 2007 chevrolet malibu lt 2.2l 4 cylinder engine, problems with electric power steering. upon start up of car it is very difficult to steer then problem goes away. this happens each time i start the car. taking it to dealer to get diagnosis next week. this is a safety issue. *tr
Complaint is that the steering column shakes and power steering light goes on and stays on. very difficult to drive. i took it dealership immediately on beltway 8 and 225 in houston, tx but was told even back then that cost was greater than car was worth. i've been driving it ever since with faulty steering because i cannot afford to fix and still pay car note. i know they have recalled some but they keep saying my vin doesn't have a recall. and i don't know how to get my vin number in the recall. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. while driving 5 mph and various other speeds, the steering wheel jerked back and forth, locked and would pull the vehicle to the left or right. the contact shut the engine off and restarted it which would reset the power steering. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that there were no related recalls and repairs would be at her expense. the manufacturer had not been notified. the failure mileage was 7,350.
This incident report should actually count as three complaints, since the power steering failure on this car has happened three times. the first time was on 8/13/10, mileage 14950. the second time was on 3/17/11, mileage 18001. the third time was yesterday, 6/2/14, mileage 49852, this is getting to be ridiculous that i keep having to replace the power steering unit on this vehicle. counting the original, this will be the fourth power steering unit. when the pump fails, all driveability is lost, and the car becomes impossible to steer. luckily, in two of the incidents, i was driving a speed of around 35mph. yesterday's failure happened in our driveway. my wife was getting ready to go to denver, and was to be driving on i-25. now i'm not sure what would have happened if the failure happened on the interstate, but i now have absolutely not confidence that this 2007 malibu is safe to drive on the road. gm should offer free replacement of the power steering units, in these cars, for the life of the vehicle. averaging a life of 12k miles for the unit is totally unacceptable. i would love if the ceo of gm, [xxx], would take this car off my hands for about a month, and use it to drive her family around. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. while traveling 5 mph and attempting to make a right turn, the steering wheel suddenly locked and then independently released. the dealer advised that the electronic power steering module would need replacing. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 68,000 and the current mileage was 69,000.
Steering at low speeds the wheel locks up and cant be turned. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. while driving at approximately 45 mph while turning left, a chime sounded and the steering wheel seized. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v064000 (steering). the failure mileage was approximately 85,000.
This problem is for a 2007 chevy malibu. i read online about several problems with the electric steering module. my problem and others are the steering will shake from left to right during idle. also, when im driving the steering wheel will get stuck like if someone took over it. there are a lot of google incidents that are posted about this problem and gm should have a recall of that problem. happens daily. *tr
Power steering assist fails randomly. seems to occur in warm weather and more frequently at lower speeds such as low speed turns, however has failed at highway speed while driving in straight line. shutting the car off and restarting the vehicle restores the power steering for a period of time. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 40 to 45 mph the power steering light came on. he drove to a service station to check his power steering fluid and noticed that it was empty. the contain stated that he has not taken the vehicle to a repair shop but he called the manufacturer. the manufacturer advised him that he had to pay for the repairs since there were no related recalls for his vin. the approximate failure and current mileages were 72,000.
There are two issues which are occurring with the steering in this vehicle. first, when the car is or is not moving (any speed) the steering wheel "twitches" and moves on it's own. second, without warning, the vehicle's steering assist stop's working 100% and there is total lost in the power steering. this is the most concerning because it happens while turning corners and while going down the highway at high speeds. gm recalled a lot of other models for this exact problem but not the chevy malibu. to top it off, the repairs are going to be astronomical. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. while driving at 35 mph, the contact heard an unusual pop from the front end of the vehicle. the dealer inspected the vehicle and advised the immediate steering shaft was defective. the dealer advised the contact he would be responsible for partial repairs. the contact did not believe he should be held liable for any of the repair. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure and current mileages were 66,000.
I was driving my 2007 chevy malibu on a highway traveling at approx. 40 mph when suddenly the steering went out. i was able to regain control of the vehicle after a few seconds. it was as if my power steering failed. *tr
Since my 2007 malibu lease began, i have complained the front end doesn't feel right and took it in for this even. but in june 2010, driving on highway - it was raining, my car began to fishtail, i was not worried, i pulled out no problem, again- it did this, no problem but suddenly the steering wheel very quickly started jerking back and forth and i couldn't hold onto it, it moved so fast !!. the steering wheel started spinning then and of course so did my car. i'm a seasoned driver with no accidents before. i really feel that if the steering wheel had not done that, i would not have crashed. the airbags did not go off either my car and i were the only ones injured. my insurance told me no need to call police. *tr
When braking for a stop the car shudders and shakes. the steering wheel vibrates and the sounds are horrible. it sounds as if the dashboard is going to fall out on your lap. we have had the brakes serviced on multiple occasions (rotors replaced, turned) and at one time the front axle was replaced being suspected of being bent. (it wasn't. cost $1600.00+) there are many stories of this occurrence on the internet forums and nothing is being done about it by the manufacturer. we own cars that are freaking scary to drive and impossible to sell. having to stop in an emergency or very quickly may not even be possible the shaking is so violent. *tr
2007 chevy malibu power steering failed when leaving gas station. had to restart engine several times before it started working again. happened only occasionally at first but then started happening almost every trip. replaced power steering motor with used one but problem still there. dangerous-happens with no warning in curves and on straight. *tr
2007 chevy malibu lt i4, about 45,000 mile. from 2010 summer, steering wheel keeps shaking left and right, may lose power steering assistance and cause crash. called chevy and being told not under powertrain warranty. *tr
The power steering seems to come in and out intermittently. while driving, the steering wheel gets looser and tighter and the turn response varies. i have been unable to diagnose the exact problem. power steering assist sensor is what a few people have mentioned to me about it. i haven't had any accidents due to this, but it is scary. *tr
I purchased a 2007 chevy malibu in march 2008 and the steering wheel was shaking to the left from the first day i purchased it and when it was checked by the dealer, i was told that it was normal and that it was due to the electronic power steering used in this model as apposed to the hydraulic steering in the previous years. aside from the steering wheel pulling to the left, there was no problem until a month ago when the power steering was locking up and rendering the vehicle steering completely inoperable all of a sudden. i researched the problem on the internet and found that this is a common problem with all 2005 and later chevrolet malibus and that gm refused to remedy the problems that many owners are experiencing. on june 2nd 2010, the power steering on my malibu locked up and seized and it rendered me unable to steer my vehicle and caused me to steer into a road sign and crash. it caused considerable damage to the front of the car as well as the radiator and under carriage of the car. gm has known of the defect, but is unwilling to recall and repair or replace the problem. i was instructed to write this letter and file a clain with the nhtsa to have an investigation lodged in an attempt to have this problem repaired by gm by force. the failure happens now almost every other day and is starting to happen more frequently. the steering locks up all of a sudden with no prior warnings. although if you stop the car, turn it off, and restart the car, the problem goes away, only to happen again at a later time with no warning.the dealer claims that gm has not recalled the problem and that the problem can be fixed for around 1000.00 to replace the steering column and sensor. according to previous owners, they have paid the 1000.00 to have the repair, only to have the same thing happen again in a few months. *tr
2005-2007 chevy malibu steering issue. nhtsa recall #10v073000 pertains to cobalt, this is also a malibu issue and should also be included in the recall as this is the same problem we all are experiencing. *tr
I started the car to cool off during a hot day, and the steering wheel started twitching back and forth, and while driving the steering will lock up, or twitch back and forth. i've taken it to 2 chevy dealers and it's going to cost around $900 to fix. they claim that it's a common occurrence, and they are constantly fixing this issue. *tr
