Recently reported STEERING problems on 2006 Chevrolet Malibu

On july 27,2008 i started my 2006 malibu. across the control panel it said power steering and i could not turn my steering wheel. i turned my car off and restarted it and it was ok. it has done this numerous times since. it has also started going out while driving down the road. making the car very hard to steer/control. there is also alot of shaking of my steering wheel. sometimes while driving the steering wheel will jerk to one side. it makes me very nervous to drive in traffic because it is very unpredictable. i feel like this is safety issue that needs to be recalled. it is really sad that so many families lives are in danger because of the unpredictability of this problem. not only is my family in danger but the lives of others as well. *tr

Power steering goes out of my 2006 chevy malibu numerous times while driving. purchased the vehicle april 2008, started in july and had towed and looked at by chevy dealer in my town. found nothing, went out on a regular basis in september and had checked again advised by dealer they do not know what it is and would cost $660. to take the steering column apart to see if it's the sensor there. usually doesn't go out as much in the cooler weather more often when outside temperature is over 60 degrees. now goes out in the cold weather too. *tr

Approximately 6 months ago, i started feeling a tug in my steering when i would make a left hand turn. then it gradually moved to a pulling of my steering wheel, where you could visibly see my steering wheel move without me touching it. then at times it almost felt like you were steering on an icy road. within the last month i have been experiencing my power steering going completely out. numerous times i have had to turn off my car then restart it to reset it. there has been three instances were my husband or myself has been driving the vehicle on the highway and my message board sound with a message "power steering", the power steering goes out, then it is nearly impossible to drive. we have had to quickly try to get over to the shoulder to turn the car off and on. my husband can physically steer the car when it is like that, i can not though. i feel that this is a tremendous hazard and i am concerned with getting in an accident because of it. we went to the repair shop (car is past the warranty) and they said the estimate will be close to $3,500. apparently they have had to fix 2 malibu's already and knew exactly what i was talking about. it is ashamed that this has not been a recall. i have seen numerous complaint on the internet, but haven't heard anything from chevrolet. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while turning the steering wheel left or right there was an abnormal noise. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on multiple occasions where it was diagnosed that the power steering shaft needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 9,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu. while driving between 1 -75 mph, the steering wheel would have a lot of "play". the wheel would make driving easy at times, but harder at other times. while the vehicle was not moving, the steering wheel would continue to move around. while driving at various speeds or turning into a tight space, it was difficult to estimate how far to turn the steering wheel. the failure mileage was 58,000 and current mileage was 59,000. the dealer replaced the steering column due to a faulty torque sensor and the steering wheel ponsition sensor. updated 09/18/08. *jb

I have a 2006 chevy malibu. i purchased it used and had issues with the steering. the dealer worked on it, replaced something in the steering column after my bringing it to them several times. now a year later and now that my warranty is not valid anymore. they aren't wanting to do anything about it even though it is the same issue they fixed before. i am having the same issue. the steering slips, makes noise and sometimes doesn't complete the turn as it should. i hear of this happening all of the time with numerous cheverlot models. something needs to be done before someone is killed. i will not by another cheverlot if they don't take better care of their customers than this. *tr

Car was in this condition when we bought. the dealership it was purchased from sent it off to be repaired. the dealership that it was repaired at replaced steering column. when we got the car back it had the same problem. dealer would not send the car back to be repair until 2 months later when i couldn't turn the steering wheel it completely lock up. the dealer sent it back to the chevy dealership and the replaced the power steering motor. 2 months later we began to have the same steering problems. i have almost gotten in 3 accidents because of this problem. *tr

I was driving along the highway and slowed down to turn to go to the pharmacy. my steering went completely out and i had to coast off road into pharmacy parking lot. unable to turn steering wheel. had to have car towed. steering motor was out on car. it costs almost $900 for repair. not covered under warranty. service dept told me he had seen other chevy malibu's with same problem. *tr

I was turning off of a bridge and the steering locked up. i almost hit a house. i took it to the dealer, i bought it from them new, not used. they kept it for 2 weeks and they said they couldn't replicate the problem. it has been locking up off and on ever since. now i have no power steering. they told me every time i brought it in to the dealer, that they couldn't find a problem. now it is out of warranty and they say they can fix it. i have to buy a new steering column and pay them to install it. it is my understanding that this is a major problem with this vehicle. will it take people getting killed for something to be done about this dangerous situation? *tr

Steering wheel jerks uncontrollably. have taken it to dealership for repair twice. steering column replaced first time and second time was told no mechanical problems. however driving down the road the steering wheel jerks so bad that it will pull vehicle from one lane to next or it will pull vehicle all over the roadway. *tr

2006 chevrolet malibu. consumer writes in regards to steering and vehicle stalling issues. *smd *js

I own a 2006 chev malibu ss. all was fine until a year ago. i noticed a "bump" in the steering while turning left. dealership told me that they would lube the steering shaft. now there is a "bump in steering and follow up bump as the wheels return to straight. there is also a rubbing noise while turning. the car is also pulling to the right. i had the alignment checked and it was in perfect order. after the "checkup" the car pulled harder to the right and the "noises" were more pronounced. i noticed that there was a recall for 1997 for issues that sound all too familiar. chevy is fixing my car under my warranty. approximate incident date is "about" when the issues first started. *tr

My car was driving decent then one day out of the blue i was pulling out of my driveway and the power steering went out. after sitting for a while trying to figure out what was wrong it reset itself. then while turning in a major intersection it went out again leaving me barely able to get through the intersection on to the side of the road out of traffic. again the power steering went out 4 more times that day on my way to the dealership. they tell me it has to have a new steering column and motor which we do to the sound of $500. two months later backing out of my driveway and it starts again. i have 3 young children and afraid that one day we may not be able to get through the intersection since there is no warning when this may occur. this is a sever danger to not only me but to those unfortunate to be around me when this happens, not to mention i am now out $500 dollars and the problem is still there. *tr

At 46,500 miles , my steering started making a clicking noise. the chevrolet dealer diagnosed it as a bad rack and pinion and steering shaft. the boots are intact. they gave me an estimate of over $1,200 for repairs. *tr

I purchased the 2006 malibu 11/2006. since that time, the right front speaker has been replaced, the interior dome light fixture replaced, the electric steering column is inoperable and needs to be replaced. the steering makes a thumping noise when turning and pulls to the left. i am opting to purchase another vehicle as this car is a safety hazard. i don't know what will go wrong next. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the steering wheel seized when making left or right turns. the dealer inspected the failure, but was unable to determine the cause. the manufacturer denied any assistance with repairs. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 29,754 and the current mileage was 72,320.

I have a 2006 chevy malibu that i have replaced the steering gear twice!! the car is not that old and should be more reliable than that. i was told if the steering had gone out on me while on the expressway, (which i drive every day),i could have been seriously injured or killed. i am afraid this is a recurring problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu. while driving 55 mph, the contact felt a vibration in the steering. the power steering warning light illuminated and the power steering failed a second later. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they were unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was notified; however, they would not accept a trade-in because the dealer could not duplicate the failure. the current mileage was 27,536 and failure mileage was 27,526. update 04-02-08 *bf

I purchased a 2006 used chevy-malibu on feb. 22-2008. with 3600 mileage. after driving for 2 weeks the steering wheel would lock-up along with a bell going off and a light flashing steering wheel problems (the light stayed on for a short period of time). i tried to steer with the car operating in manual steering which was very hard to do since i'm 72 years old. i let the car drift to a parking lot and proceeded to cut the motor off and start again to try to get power steering in an operative mode. this happened to me a number of times . coming out of my driveway there is a fire hydrant and the wheel locked and i could not turn away from the hydrant in time and i hit it. i was turning a corner in to traffic and it locked again. i called the dealership and they said to take it to someone that required that i leave it overnight . but the shop was quite a distance from my home. i waited until july and called the salesman who works at a different place now and he said i could take to any chevrolet dealer to have it repaired. i have an extended warranty with zurich . the repair shop states that they don't cover all the cost to get it repaired less $200.00 out of pocket. i want to know if there has been some other complaints or if there is a recall on this type vehicle. *tr

Per nhtsa bulletin 10020816 and gm bulletin 060232007 covering steering input shaft #22687711. this shaft begins to make a clunking sound between 0 and 16 mph when turning. in order to stop the noise, i believe caused by the worn u-joints at both ends of the shaft, this part must be replaced every two years. you do not hear any clunking above 16/17 mph. i have been told by a gm service department that the part can not come apart, and i can replace the part every two years or live with the noise. really. does anyone remember rear wheel drive vehicle and what would happen when the u-joints on the drive shaft began clunking when you put the vehicle in gear. you replaced them or you could be walking. this is a steering shaft. when will the u-joint(s) fail? when i am turning out of my driveway, turning into a parking space, or perhaps at highway speed avoiding an animal. what is amazing is that gm knew about this defected design/part and yet kept using it into 2008. the bulletins cover malibu cars from 2004 to 2008, pontiac g6's 2005 to 2007, and saturn aura's 2007 to 2008. i feel gm should be given two choices, fix this part when it starts clunking for the life of the vehicle, or buy them back. *js

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu. while driving 25 mph, the power steering failed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they could not duplicate the failure. the purchase date was unknown. updated 02-19-08 *bf. the current mileage was 9,000 and failure mileage was 8,990. updated 02/19/08 *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 70 mph on normal road conditions, the steering wheel locked without warning. immediately, the contact depressed the brake pedal and pulled over to the side of the road. the gear shifter was placed into park and the contact made several attempts before the steering column unlocked. the vehicle then resumed normal operation. when he reached his destination, the power steering warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. suddenly, the steering wheel began to vibrate violently and made a grinding noise. the failures occurred sporadically. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing and then repaired. on five separate occasions, the vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but the failure was not corrected. the vehicle is currently being repaired again. the cause of the failure has not been determined. the failure mileage was 16,000 and current mileage was 25,000.

This car had hardly driven off the lot,as a certified used car with 31000 original miles on the od and i put only 800 miles, when the rotors, and brakes, and steering started knocking, and becoming what i would call "stiff,non-functional" power steering, and pull violently to the left, when uphill. the harsh shaking,of the rotors, and the "stringy feeling of the brake pad, loose was not stopping at a proper safe level. at the future, within 2008-2009-2012 the steering column, was recalled, and put in twice and the brakes were not good, requiring more replacements, and rotors shaved for my safety as it rattled the front end,and caused steering, and distracting for driving safely. i had multiple close calls on basic driving,in rural area, uphill, where power steering went out,the car was not able to be controlled. prob 10 times,on freeway i could not go past 60 miles,or the engine would act strange, pulling, and again threatening to fail power steering. to date,,now the maf failed, and shut off the engine while driving, again locking up the brakes, and in the middle of traffic. in total it has 30000 new miles in less then 6 yrs and it remains a deathtrap. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu. while still under warranty, the vehicle's steering column began making a knocking noise under the dashboard. the failure occurred while driving 15 mph. the dealer replaced the steering column, but the noise recurred six months later. the contact took the vehicle back to the dealer and they stated that the vehicle was no longer under warranty; therefore, she would be responsible for the repairs. the manufacturer did not assist. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 34,000 and current mileage was 60,000.

On friday nov.16,2007 at approximately 8:30am while i was trying to back out of my driveway, the powersteering in my 2006 malibu stopped working and i sideswiped my husbands car, scratched the driver's side of the malibu and cracked the hub cap. i contacted roadside service to pickup the malibu at my residence. . once the malibu arrived at frank z cheverolet, where i purchased the vehicle, the service dept. rep. called me and stated that i had a failure in the powersteering electric monitor and told me to call chevrolet to file a case. i was very concerned and frightened about the incident because if i had of been on the highway i could of been hurt, killed or injured someone else. chevrolet's cust. assist. rep. did not comfort me at all. i expressed that i wanted to terminate my lease on the vehicle because i did not feel safe in it anymore. so he told me that they had to go through certains steps and not to overreact. chevrolet called out their 3rd party group of engineering specialist to inspect the car and they confirmed that a component in the powersteering monitor did in fact fail. chevrolet's rep. stated that the only option i had was to repair the car. if i refused, they would take the rental car back asap. so in so many words they told me that it is either their way or the highway. so i agreed to have the car repaired and they quickly changed their mind on terminating the rental. they even extended it until after the car is repaired and stated that they stand behind their products. as of today, on dec. 8,2007 the car is still at the dealership. i truly feel that my security and safety was not taken in consideration, only the profit they were going to lose. anytime the dealership service men do not want to touch the vehicle, anytime chevrolet cust assist. rep. have to call engineering analyst to inspect the car and confirms the failure, that means that this is not a minor case, it was something major, esp. to me. mileage about 13,900. *tr

At approximately 35,000 miles and replacement of front tires twice, took vehicle to dealership and found that the steering rack and leftside outer tierod end needed to be replaced. dealership replaced the items. at 60,000 miles and after replacement of right side tire 2 times, vehicle was taken for a front end alignment and was told that the right side tierod end needed to be replaced because it wouldn't maintain alignment. contacted dealer and was told that it was out of warranty, but they would look at it and give an estimate to repair it. *tr

When i purchased my 2006 chevy malibu from steve rogers ford on 12/12/06 it had about 24,600 miles on it. around july/august of 2007 i began been feeling an occasional popping when i turned. soon it became more consistent, and also started to pull to one side, especially when taking off from a stop. we took it for a 4 wheel alignment on 10/30/07, and the technician immediately knew something more was wrong when he turned the key on and the wheels wandered to the left on their own without the steering wheel even being touched. it was determined to be the rack and pinion. after the alignment, the car was taken to the place of purchase. they sent us next door to yark chevrolet, where they refused to cover the repair because the vehicle had exceeded the warranty by a mere 600 miles. the estimated cost of repair is $550, which does not include the "reprogramming" of the "computer assisted" power steering system or an additional alignment. i do not have that kind of money laying around to fix it now. i will probably have to borrow it. i thought in buying a newer vehicle, i wouldn't have to worry about major repairs for a while. personal research indicates this is an ongoing issue with the malibu, and i believe recalls should be issued since it is apparent gm has not remedied this problem yet. *tr

Power steering malfunctioned. *tr

I have a 2006 chevy malibu. at about 38,000 miles the electric steering quit working. i had to replace. since the installation of new electric steering component, the steering system makes a very loud snap or clunking or metal on metal sound everytime i make a turn or take off from a stop. some thing is shifting or moving in the steering gear shaft or rack & pinion. called the dealer and they said it was normal that it does it and some grease would help quite it. that was there answer for poor engineering. there are many people that have the same problem and there doesn't seem to be a permanent fix for it from gm. if i try to sell my malibu to someone else i will either take a large loss or not be able to sell it at all. i am complaining because gm has not stepped up and accepted responsibility for this problem and come up with a solution. to have anything done at a dealer is 60 to $80.00 per hour, which all the unfortunate owners of those gm electric steering vehicles should not have to pay. i would like to see some pressure put on gm to resolve this very exasperating and potentially serious erosive safety condition. as time goes on the situation gets worse and resonates more and more up the steering column. lets get this fixed before there is a serious accident or loss of life because the steering fails on these automobiles. sincerely. *tr

The electric steering assist stopped working. very hard to control car. when i pulled over and shut car off, and restarted the malibu, the power steering came back long enough to get it back home. had it fixed and cost me over $600.00 at the chevy dealer. at 56000 miles i was contacted by gm, and they re-imbursed me for the cost. since then, i am now experiencing a somewhat loud and aggravating clunking or shifting noise when turning either direction or taking off from a start. i am very concerned about the safety of the whole steering mechanism and the stress being put on other components making them fail. i have also replaced the ball joints on the car. my problem is that not only the safety issue, but the resale value is severely reduced. who in there right mind would buy the car knowing its problems? there needs to be a recall on this vehicle to address those issues. *tr

While passing another car, accelerating around a curve, or taking off from a stop. the electronic power steering shuts down leaving you fighting a steering wheel that almost feels locked. i was told that there was a bulletin out on the coil pack . that it is spiking a voltage above 16 volts and as a safety feature it shuts down the electronic steering to protect it. it might protect the steering from the electric surge, but it has almost caused a wreck on a couple of occasions. luckily i was able to fight the dead steering wheel where if i was a smaller male/ female there would be a chance that i couldn't. *tr

Gm/chevrolet/malibu 2006 1st occurrence about a month ago. three times - several hundred miles apart. power steering fails when car in motion - manual steering requires significant effort to get car to side of road. turning the ignition off then restarting the car reset the power steering. no indication on instrument panel before or after. immediately called dealer. they said there might be an overvoltage problem and would order the part. have heard nothing more. (springhill motors - springhill, la) today the power steering failed three times in less than a mile. finally muscled the car home without power assisted steering. i was able to reset the power steering while in park. while still in park, turning the wheel the slightest bit to the left causes power steering to fail. if wheel turned right immediately after restart, the steering does not fail - but turning it back to the left brings immediate failure. if this has not become an issue and a recall, it certainly needs to become one. i doubt i would have been able to react in time had i been on at highway speed in a curve. the initial feeling is not that steering has become difficult, rather that steering has become locked and impossible. *tr

The power steering goes out, without any warning. you must shut off the car and restart to get the power steering working again. there is no place to add power steering fluid, as this is an electric power steering unit. *tr

2006 chevy malibu has been loosing power steering sporadically since it was purchased. usually happens accelerating up ramps with curves in them. chimes go off and battery light comes on. if you take your foot off the gas pedal, the power steering returns, battery light goes out and chimes stop. we have taken in to have it checked out several times with no results. dealers cannot find cause, nor do they make any repairs. *tr
