I was about to turn into a parking spot and suddenly i could not hardly turn the steering wheel. my message board read "powering steering". it started about 1 week ago and has done it several times since. i have even gotten into my car and directly after starting it the same message pops up, and i can not turn the wheel. my steering wheel also started jerking while i am driving down the road. i started research on this issue and found that many others have this problem! hopefully this will not cost an outrageous amount of money to fix. i would really appreciate some research into this issue. most of the issues came from 2004 models. it is really upsetting to know that this has been an issue for a long time. i just hope this gets fixed before someone does get hurt. thank you for your time. *tr

My 2006 chevrolet malibu has steering problems. while driving, the power steering will suddenly quit, making it almost impossible to control or maneuver, almost causing me to crash. i've taken it to dealers, they re-set something in the electrical system,or steering system, ir runs for awhile, then starts up again! *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu. while turning at approximately 5 mph he could hear a popping noise coming from the steering column. over time the failure progressed and recurred whenever he made turns while driving at any speed. while turning over bumpy surfaces the failure was more pronounced. the vehicle was not taken to be examined for the cause of failure and has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 71,000. the vin was unavailable.

My 2006 chevy malibu is having major issues. power steering is intermittently going out.. without warning. steering completely locks up for no reason when driving. very unsafe! also.. in 2008 the steering column had to be replaced. also.. very unsafe. i am aware that these issues have become quite common and am very upset the chevy has not acknowledged and provided a recall. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated when she applied pressure to the brakes, the brake light would not illuminate and when it would illuminate, it would not shut off. in addition, she noticed that the check engine warning light was also illuminated. when attempting to accelerate, the vehicle would exhibit an abnormal knocking from the engine followed by a violent jerking. the steering wheel also seized intermittently, making it difficult to control the vehicle. the dealer replaced the oxygen banks one and two, core pack, spark plugs and the prongs. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the current mileage was 155,000 and the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

2006 chevy malibu lt electrical power steering failure: on 1/31/2010, my family and i were on our way to church; while driving on interstate 20 (i20) the 2006 chevy malibu electrical power steering went out. it was only because of the low traffic volume at that time there was no accident to be reported. i was unable to make it to church but i was able to get the vehicle back to my home. i had a family member pick up my wife that is pregnant along with my two daughters, and follow me back to the house. because the dealership was closed i searched online to find out if this a common problem with the chevy malibu. within my research i have found out this problem is a common problem among many owners who vehicle falls between the year of 2004 and 2006. although my car has over 100,000 miles i have found this problem has accrued as early as 52,000 miles. i thank you for taking the time out to investigate my complaint, and pray that the best decision is made as it relates to lives of others. again i thank you for this service and opportunity to express my concerns. *tr

When starting my car it is very hard to turn the wheel until i gain a little speed. *tr

2006 chevy malibu has repeat steering problems. in past 6 months steering gear and i-shaft have been replaced during two separate visits to dealer. there is still excess noise during acceleration and during turns. the noise is continuous. *tr

I have a 2006 malibu lt that lost the power steering on a street, on able to maneuver the car i had some bystanders help me push the car to a parking lot. i have researched and seen that there are many malibu's with this problem some with accidents. *tr

i have a 2006 chevy malibu ls . power steering keeps coming on. the wheel turns slightly in idle. well now power steering is lost while deriving making it hard to move at high speeds. dangerous. after car is turned off the problem seems to go away until minutes later you hear chimes and it locks again. *tr

Power steering assist fails when turning the steering wheel and accelerating. usually, this happens after the vehicle has been parked for a couple of days, before the engine has had a chance to warm up. this has happened at least six times in the last two months. most recently on january 15, 2010. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu. the contact started the ignition and noticed when turing the steering wheel into the left direction a loud noise would emit. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the front swing arm suspension was replaced. the failure recurred and the vehicle was taken to a different technician who stated the defect was contributed to the steering column. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer had not been notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000. the vin was unavailable.

The power steering goes out when making right or left hand turns. or when the temp in the vehicle is hot the steering won't stay on at all. the dealer told me that there was a special warreny enancement issued but no recall. this means that a milage limit of 100,000 miles is in place. so this will cost me $1200 to fix for something that they know is wrong with this vehicle. i guess someone has to be killed or injured before something is done.

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu. the driver stated that his power steering failed whenever he started the vehicle. the driver also stated that his steering wheel began to shake immediately after the vehicle was turned on. when he shifted into drive gear and accelerates, the steering wheel was shaking excessively. the failure mileage was 68,700 and the current mileage was 69,000.

I own a 2006 chevy malibu, while i was driving the steering locked up. i was only going about 35 mph i was able to pull over and stop. i was told to cut the car off for about 20 minutes. after the 20 minutes i was able to drive the car with no problems that day, their have been two incidents with the same problem. *tr

Power steering goes out without warning. happens intermittently and shop cannot determine what causes it. *tr

Steering wheel locks up while driving - happens at random - at all different times. dealer acted like it was no big deal and of course they want me to pay for it when i have now found out that i am not the only one complaining about this problem. it is dangerous, and it could cause fatality. problem seems to go away for a while after i change out the spark plugs. but i am at 160,000 miles and on my 8th set of spark plugs. something is not right, spark plugs should last longer than 20,000 miles. gm should take this complaint seriously before someone is killed. something is wrong, otherwise why would there be so many people complaining about the same problem. i am working at paying off this car as fast as possible so that i can get into a safer vehicle. sadly, i will *never* buy a chevy again :-( *tr

My steering system is failing and my rack and pinion needs replacing at 65,000 miles. my mechanic says it's not safe to drive in the long term with the clunking sounds i hear and the rack could fail and cause me to crash. gm chevy malibu v6 engine. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevy malibu. the steering wheel failed while driving between 15 and 55 mph on two occasions. the contact had to turn the vehicle off and back on before the steering system reset itself and began driving normally. the input torque sensor was replaced by the dealer. the contact is concerned about the safety risk. . the failure mileage was 48000. the current mileage was 51000. *cn updated 02/17/10.*jb

Power steering fails while driving. wheel turns suddenly to the left and then there is no power steering. i looked online and saw that several people have had the same problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 30 mph into a parking lot, the steering wheel became extremely hard to turn. the power steering warning light illuminated on the warning panel and he attempted to shut off and restart the engine several times, until the poser steering reset itself. he confirmed he experienced the failure several times over a course of one month. the manufacturer was contacted and advised taking the vehicle to the dealer for diagnostic testing, at his expense. no assistance was offered. the approximate failure mileage was 35,000 and the current was 38,000.

Steering pops and snaps. sometimes feels like it has a "catch" in it or about to lock up. i know you have had many complaints about 06 malibus. are you going to wait until it's a fiasco and more people die like the current cobalt and hhr mess? this malibu problem should have been recalled years ago. i have talked, networked with many other malibu owners. you need to stop coddling and snuggling with gm and get these malibus recalled for steering safety issues. they are unsafe! i can see a class action lawsuit also naming you as complicite. do your job and quit sucking gm. *tr

I was driving to work, made a right turn and my power steering just went out. there was no where to pull over on side of the road, i struggled to steer the car into a parking lot which was almost impossible. i was almost hit from behind twice too many times because of this. the dealership has diagnosed this as the power steering system. this exact incident is starting to happen more frequently. this problem happened a year ago but then it drove just fine afterwards and didn't happen again until now and now it's almost every turn. 6 months after i bought the car, i heard a clicking noise but when taken to a shop, i was told there was no noise but after hearing it again, the dealership diagnosed the power steering problem. *tr

Steering problem. *tr

I was driving on the freeway in my 2006 malibu lt, when the steering wheel locked up, the steering got really tight and i was unable to control the car on the freeway, after a few seconds the steering went back to normal, and a few seconds later it locked up again. a power steering warning came up on the dash. i took it to a local chevy dealership. they ran diagnostics and said that the power steering motor had gone bad. this is an extreme safety hazard, that did not result from neglect on my part as the owner. had i not been an experienced driver, or if the roads were wet or slippery, the power steering malfunction could have had bad outcome. upon doing research on the internet, this seems to be a problem for the malibu, across many model years. *tr

Under normal driving conditions the steering become difficult when turning to the right. occasionally you can feel "pulsing" while turning. happens at all speeds. corrects itself when the vehicle is shut off. problem began within the last month as a slight pressure whiling turning. last 2 days the steering has become very difficult. yesterday problems developed while turning right onto the interstate. no warning lights or alarms. contacted the dealership and they have no knowledge this issue. just rolled 57,000 miles. *tr

Chevrolet malibu 2006 lt 3.5 v6 steering when driving at hghway speeds locks up. creates a feeling like emergency braking with abs. has happened on several occasions while turning in town and while traveling on the highway. lakeside dealership in rockwall, tx when i contacted them said there was not a fix gm was aware of problems with the electronic steering in the malibu, implala and full size trucks. crashed on a county road because the steering would not allow me to turn. the car crashed into a washout area causing more than $5000.00 in damage. *tw

Bought a new chevy malibu in july of 2006--we have fought tires on it since day 1 and no one would stand behind them--the rims won't seal around the tires. we have replaced the tires and no luck. we have had to "air them up" every other day since we purchased it. yesterday while driving--my power steering just decided to quit working. if i shut the car off and wait 15 minutes--it will be fine again--until the car gets warm at which point it locks up again. this is a very dangerous issue as you never know when it will happen. i am told there is no recall and the dealership isn't aware of any issues with it. when i went online for help--there are many people having the same issue. *tr

1. intermittent power steering alert on driver information center 2. power steering alert comes on and then the power steering turns off while driving. (intermittent). 3. was brought to repair place, and it is currently being repaired. *tr

2006 chevy malibu failure of rack and pinion, steering failure replaced 3 times still defective. *tr

The power steering in my 2006 chevrolet malibu. the sensor comes on and the steering wheel is very difficult to move. so far it has occurred sporadically beginning back about sept 30, that sat. i took it to the dealership to see if they could look at what was happening, i was told they could do nothing without that sensor on. it has happened several times since then but as the following states i have kind of figured out how to wait and then keep on going. so i finally figured out if i started the car and the sensor appeared, i would turn off the car-wait about 5min, then restart the car & no sensor appearance. it happened once more while i was driving to san antonio, friday night, oct 30 - i had been on the road about an hour or so and the sensor just popped on (it might have been b/c i had the cd player, the a/c, and the cruise control on) anyway thank goodness there were no major turns so i drove the car with it on for about 1more hr before pulling into a rest stop. then it reset itself again. now these last 3 mornings (maybe because it is cold) i have started the car and the warning power steering appears, i turn off the car, wait the 5min and restart the car, it doesn't appear but after driving about 2-3min, it will appear and i am usually in am traffic and need to turn at 2 lights & thank goodness the turn space is great or i would not be able to proceed. i get to work and have to park across from where i normally do because i am unable to turn the wheel into my space. since i was unable to take it to a dealership as they are unable to charge me the $100 diagnosis fee w/o the sensor being on. i called chevrolet. com and they have connected me with jupiter chevrolet and now i have an appointment to show up at the dealership in the morning and hopefully the sensor will turn on as i get to the dealership so i will not have the problem of turning from traffic into the curved driveway (which also has about 4 turns ...

Today 21 september 2009, the electronic assist power steering on our 2006 chevrolet malibu stopped functioning, resulting in the vehicle aggressively pulling to the left. the result of this failure at highway speed makes this vehicle unsafe for passengers and for other vehicles adjacent to the car. attempts to correct this failure by resetting the ecu have failed, and the vehicle continues to pull aggressively to the left even while stationary. *tr

I have a 2006 chevy malibu that has a system error "low steering fluid". the kicker is the car doesn't take fluid. i call the dealer and they state there is a discussion of recall for the electronic steering but nothing yet. reading on line this appears to potentially be a major safety problem. is this car at risk to drive if i can't afford to fix this problem right now? *tr

We have a steering problem. the car now has 19,636 miles on it. earlier this year while i was coming home from work the steering locked up on it. i managed to get off the road. but it's very difficult to steer. a power steering warning message came on. last week the same thing happened but this time i was still on the parking lot. when you turn the car off and restart, the steering will be ok but i never know when it'll lock up again. it makes me scared to drive it. my husband took it to the dealership but nothing showed up when it was tested. i contacted gm with the problem. it's awful to have a nice car and to be afraid you'll have an accident when you drive it. *tr

Power steering warning indicator on dic, eps motor failure. the steering will lock up while in the middle of driving. typically, worse in highway speeds. very dangerous! the vehicle is 3 years old and has been replace 14 months ago. now, needs the eps motor replaced again. screams of product flaw/defeat to me. chevy should do something before someone is killed. *tr

Electric power steering locks up at any speed. *tr

Power steering failure on chevy malibu 2006 gm. the power steering light almost always pops up on the dashboard. it was most worst when the steering wheel locked on me on a 70 mph highway and i was going about 65. this put my family's life in danger and mine, but were able to avoid an accident. by putting the car in neutral and restarting the car. *tr

While driving at 60mph on the freeway car steering jerked and then locked up. there was no power steering at all and no where to pull over. it has since happened about 20 times at various speeds. *tr

Power steering indicator keeps coming on while driving. typically happens everytime i get in the car to drive it. *tr

Power steering failure in a 2006 chevrolet malibu when making a left turn at low speed. same problem was recalled in 2004 malibu's but no recall on 2006. when power steering goes out, car has to be manually turned until you can turn car off and restart so power steering will be activated again. very dangerous when you are in traffic and have to stop and start car again. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while traveling various speeds, the vehicle erroneously veered to the left. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure could not be replicated. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 45,000.

Steering wheel locks up while driving - happens at random - at all different times. dealer acted like it was no big deal and of course they want me to pay for it when i have now found out that i am not the only one complaining about this problem. it is dangerous, and it could cause fatality. some kind of new steering system - gm better idea - probably because it is cheaper!!! *tr

2006 chevrolet malibu displayed "power steering" on information screen while driving. other times, all the dash displays go dark for several seconds. sometimes the dash displays take several seconds to "light up" on starting the car. dealer found no "codes" to indicate what the problem is. dealer speculates there is an internal short in steering motor. *tr
