We have classified the 684 complaints from 2004 Chevrolet Malibu about STEERING into the following categories.
When i accelerate to get onto the freeway and push on the gas the check light with the tool will come on and i am unable to steer my car and the steering locks. it isn't until i ease up off the gas pedal does it stop. this has almost caused an accident as i was unable to control my car.
Power steering fails under hard acceleration. when this occurs the check engine light come on and the steering has no electric assist. this continues until the acceleration is reduced. after reduced acceleration the check engine light goes off the the power steering returns to normal. this occurs intermittently, but typically on a freeway on ramp while getting up to speed and trying to merge with traffic.
I was driving my 2004 chevy malibu and it was fine until about 30 minutes into my drive. i stopped to make a left turn, and when i started to accelerate, my steering wheel started rapidly turning back and forth. left, right, left right... i pulled over and turned the engine off and it was still steadily back and forth.. power was still on. turned the vehicle off and back on and nothing! but the car was literally swaying back and forth, when this was happening and i was driving! very scary!!
As i began too turn while driving my power steering went out causing me to almost have an accident , it has happen other times as well . when we shut the car off and restart it the power steering is fine for a while . it was on recall for power steering failure and was repaired back in 2015 , now it's a problem again , so gm is free of the problem since they repaired it once !!!!! so please help us ! we can't afford these expensive repairs for a problem they claimed to have repaired !!!!!
When i'm driving down the road the power steering just goes out on me. i took it to my mechanic and he said it was under the recall and sent me to a chevrolet dealer (beckley buick gmc automall) they looked at it and said the recall was fixed on 04/18/2017 and this was not covered under a recall. they told me it needed a new power steering module, column. i took it back to my mechanic and he said that it was covered under the recall and to contact chevrolet and if they don't do anything to contact national highway traffic safety administration. i have two children and this is a concern for me because it just goes out while i'm driving and if i wreck and kill us or hurt someone else because i can't turn the steering wheel.

My electric steering sometimes locks up and cant steer anymore
The rack and pinion went out when making left turns in city setting. steering wheel turned but wheels did not. felt a jumping in the wheel. gears in rack were stripped when making a hard left turn. steering wheel spun 3/4 and ruined air bag and no cruise control. ive had to get a new rack and pinion.
Clunking sound that you can feel in the foot pedal and when you rock steering wheel back in forth and clunking noise coming from front endin steering wheel and unable to control vehicle felling over loosing control of car
This car has total steering loss that is not predictable. the steering recall did not fix this vehicle. dash board light comes on during the intermittent electric steering failure. this happens while the car is moving at cruising speed and usually lasts about 2-4 seconds resulting in a loss of control.
When make a slow or hard turn in either direction power steering seems to stop working and steering wheel requires more effort to turn
First steering wheel turned all the way around and secondly then car nor going backward and forward did not move
Electric power steering stopped working while i was on the highway going 75mph. turned car off then back on and it didn't have an issue. then cut out again while i was driving. electric power steering has completely failed

The steering assist stops working intermittently without warning. i am an elderly person and it makes it almost impossible to steer at times. it doesn't normally do it when going over 35 mph. when it is cold outside it seems to do it more. i may just notice it more in the cold because i drive slower in the bad weather.
I received an email this morning 8/1/2018 stating my car may have recalls on it. when i click the link, i see there are 10 recalls on the 2004 chevy malibu. 10! out of those 10, i received a notice for only two! i received a notice about my power steering which came after my wheel locked up on my while i was driving on the highway! i check the list today, and my car has had several issue that were listed: ignition, transmission, brakes, etc. i was never notified about these issues. these notices have been out since 2014 and i never received a notice about them.
My steering wheel locks up as if the power steering is empty when i make full wide turns. i have to turn the car off and back on to get full accessibility to the steering wheel.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. while driving various speeds, the steering wheel seized. the vehicle was taken to chapman chevrolet (6925 essington ave, philadelphia, pa); however, the failure could not be duplicated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the steering wheel failure was confirmed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was unknown.
Power steering keeps going out even after it got fixed during the first recall
I lose power steering assist when i'm driving. usually happens when the car is parked or randomly while i am driving.
The problem started as the steering wheel would continuously bounce to the left and to the right, also could be described as a wobble when the car would be sitting still. if and when this would happen while driving, it would pull the car to the left or to the right. on top of this "wobble" the power steering only works when it wants to and will quit while driving or not be working when you start the car. the vehicle was taken to the dealership on the pretence that the car should fall under recall 14v153000 released in 2014. however the dealer and gm disagrees, even though the dealer has confirmed the eps in the steering column has gone bad and the power steering motor/module is also bad and needs replaced.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. while attempting to park the vehicle at approximately 2 mph, the steering ability seized. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed replacement. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

Power steering has issues. receives a power steering fault on display. steering wheel oscillates and locks up. if the component fails completely power steering control will be lost. this is a known issue for this year make model of vehicle. torque sensor failure recalls exist. being told that this known problem is not covered for repair.
While driving the lights went dim and the steering was hard, the information panel on the car said "power steering", the car finally stopped running and had to jump start the car. this has happened five times now. gm says there is no recall on this but i noticed several recalls similar to this and with a lifetime service to replace the electric assist
My power streeing keeps going out and the streeing wheel shake by itself while im drvingi have to turn the car off os the power streeing to go back on. when i back up out of a parking space or anywhere really my streeing wheel locks up and shoots to the opposite direction. there is an ex warranty for the 2005 chevy malibu for the exact same part the part are the same. power streeing asst.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 15 mph, the steering wheel became loose and made a clunking and rattling noise. while driving over a bump and making turns, the steering wheel rattled and felt very loose. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion and intermediate shaft failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer. the manufacturer was contacted and advised the contact to take the vehicle to a gm dealer. no further assistance was offered. the approximate failure mileage was 200,000.
Power steering repeatedly goes out while driving. blinkers only work sometimes. cruise control does not engage. i lost power steering going down a busy highway.
My car had a recall for the electric power assist after fulfilling the recall i started having power steering problems loss of steering airbag light coming on and the power steering coming across the car message center. i went to turn the wheel it turned then when i turned the wheel again the car lost steering and i almost had a crash. the dealership told me that the internal steering gear failed and isn't covered under the warranty recall but it will be 1900.00 dollars to fix it . gm corporate office told me what do i expect from a 2004 with 150,000 miles on it its old and has excessive miles on it. i asked them why dont they stand by their product they kept saying its a 2004.
When i went to make a turn, the steering wheel made this popping noise and the car would not turn. the steering wheel spins completely around and does not turn either of the wheels. no warning lights appeared on my dash. the car had a complete loss of steering left and right. very dangerous and i caused total chaos on the street just trying not to hit someone.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. while driving 60 mph, the check engine and power steering warning indicators illuminated. the steering wheel required excessive force in order to make a turn. when the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, it resumed normal operation. the failure recurred several other times. the contact also stated that the brake lights failed to work. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the recalls were expired. the vehicle was taken to another dealer where they estimated that the diagnostic check would cost $114. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. the failure mileage was 166,000.
My malibu would lose power steering while driving. if i shut off the car and started it back up, the power steering would be back. i then got a recall notice about the issue so i took it in. the power steering worked for a couple years then suddenly went out completely. i can now no longer get the issue fixed. it's worse than it was. i don't know what options i have.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. while attempting to park the vehicle at 1 mph, the contact heard a thumping noise coming from the front driver's side of the vehicle. the steering wheel also became very loose. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the intermediate steering shaft failed, but the mechanic did not specify whether the part would need to be repaired or replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14e044000 (steering). the approximate failure mileage was 98,000.
I received a letter from general motors explaining they knew issues with the rack and pinion for my 2004 chevrolet malibu during the first 150,000 miles of the vehicle at no charge. it also states if i paid for repairs i would get reimbursed for this. currently i have 48,857 miles. my steering column went out of control while i was in motion. i had the rack and pinion and outer tie rod replaced on my vehicle on (4/4/17). i called gm on 4/11/17. in the morning, they said i would get re-imbursed. in the afternoon i received a phone call stating i would not get re-imbursed. i believe there are currently 12 recalls for this vehicle. i would like this matter of the rack and pinion issue be looked at further by the safety board to impose a safety recall. if it happened to my car, it may happen to other gm cars.
I purchased my used 2004 chevrolet malibu november 23, 2016, the day before christmas. i was in motion merging into philadelphia's schuykill exp when my steering wheel locked in place for 2-3 seconds as i was going over 55 mph on a slight turn. i remember the wrench lighting up in the top left corner of the dashboard and reading 'power steering' message on my the screen. the steering wheel stiffens as if you have that car that runs out of steering fluid. another incident happened again while in motion, when i was coming down philadelphia pike merging on the i-95 south. again, the steering wheel locks for a few seconds, reads power steering on the screen with the orange wrench in the bottom left corner of the dashboard. it's frightening because my car could go in another lane and hit an incoming car, or vice versa. the first time i couldn't pull over to recooperate because there are no shoulder lanes. i'm still having this issue and it has been two years. even when i am parallel parked sometimes, my steering wheel tightens and i can't fully turn the wheel. when i called chevrolet the first time, the representative assured me that there were no recalls shown for my vin number. i was directed to go to chevy and told me it was a steering column issue. the cost and labor itself is steep. i call to folllow up and they basically told me they could not do anything about the problem because it was out of the time frame for the warranty which doesn't make sense because no manufacturer expects to recall to happen.. and paying for that repair is not even a guarantee that it will fix the issue based on the other complaints.
The power steering on my car is failing. it does not work at low speeds and reverts to manual mode. it appears there is a recall on certain 04-06 malibu's, just not mine. any chance the recall will be expanded?
Takata recall my 2004 malibu does not have working cruise control , my wiring is barely working as in my locks won't work , my heat we only blows cold air on defrost my defrost barely clears my windows , my t\c light is the only light that stays on all the time and i barely have traction while driving if i'm trying to accelerate getting on the highway my wheel will lock or barely move and i have to let completely off the gas to free the wheel i get any alerts on my speedometer. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 30 mph and making a left or right turn, the power steering seized and the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. the power steering warning indicator illuminated and a beeping noise was heard. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the power steering motor failed and needed to be replaced. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 166,000.
Complete steering failure. steering has made "clunking" sounds for years (since about 1 year after new), and has been "repaired" several times previously, only once under warranty. action: suddenly, while driving, the steering wheel began "ratcheting" when making a turn, and the wheels would not respond to the direction of the steering wheel. did not cause accident, but badly frightened the driver. repair required replacement of the rack & pinion assembly plus the steering shaft (rusty) for a total cost of $1,300 (including $100 "fee" imposed by gm to be able to keep the failed parts). the failed parts are available for examination by nhtsa if needed.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. while driving at various speeds, the power steering warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. in extremely cold temperatures, the steering wheel would become stuck. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering shaft exhibited signs of failure, but had not completely failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 200,000. updated 04/21/2016*lj
For the last 3-4 weeks my maintenance chime kept going off and a message saying power steering. and i noticed my steering wheel has either been really loose or another time i will need to use some force to turn. the steering wheel feels like it wants to give out at times. i took my car last year to get fixed twice when general motors recalled my vehicle that involved the power steering. i took it to the dealer today and they confirmed it was indeed the recalled part.
