We have classified the 684 complaints from 2004 Chevrolet Malibu about STEERING into the following categories.
While driving home from work. i was turning into my apartment complex and my steering wheel tightened up. i ran into the median that divides the entrance and the exit of a complex. due to not being able to turn the steering wheel. there was a message on my radio display that said power steering. after i hit the median, i turned my car off to get out and see the extent of the damage to my car and the property. when i got back into my car and started it again the steering was fine again. a few days later i experienced it the same problem again while drive on the highway during rush hour. after further research i have found that there are many others who have experienced the same problem and there seem to be no fix if the dealership can't find the problem. the dealership told me that if they were to take my word and fix the steering column and that did not fix the problem i would be out of $1000+ dollars. this is the only problem that i have ever had with this vehicle and there needs to be something done about this problem. fast!! *tr
While out driving doing regular errands, i needed to make a right turn at an intersection and realized that the wheel would not move. i had to force the steering wheel to move in order to make the turn. i was afraid to go any further because i was on a relatively busy street and did not want to have an accident. i pulled over and called my son who told me that it sounded like the power steering failed. after i calmed down, i drove the car approximately two miles back to my home. i have informed chevrolet of the problem. *ln
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving 10 mph and attempting a turn, the steering wheel seized. the vehicle was pulled over and the contact allowed the vehicle to sit for several hours before the power steering assist resumed normal function. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection or repairs. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 125,000.
I was driving to a doctors appointment when all of a sudden my power steering went out while i was driving during rush hour traffic. very scary incident considering the fact that there was no warning and i was in mid-turn. i have been researching and apparently this has been an issue. i turn the car off and looked it over and nothing seemed to be obviously wrong , so i restarted the car and the service lights on the dash disappeared and the vehicle was running as if nothing had happened and the power steering was back to proper function. i am now a little nervous driving the car, because i have read a lot of peoples input and stories and it repeats itself frequently once it happens for the first time. there has been a motion for a recall, but they still have not recalled this model. this is a very serious issue and could very easily cause injury or death depending on the situation you are in when the malfunction happens. i appreciate your time researching this matter. *jb
Power steering light has been coming on intermittently over the last 5 months. today my power steering failed completely. was very difficult to steer. after turning vehicle off then back on it started working again, then failed again. apparently this is a common problem with this car.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while traveling on an off ramp at an unknown speed, the steering wheel seized. the contact mentioned that the vehicle was previously repaired under an unknown recall but the failure recurred. also, the contact received notification for recall nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control), nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering) and nhtsa campaign number: 14v224000 (power train). however, the parts to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was not aware of the issue. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
Steering failed as i was making a left hand turn. the steering warning system has been giving false indication that something is wrong with the car until it did fail. also please check out the following http://www.edmunds.com/chevrolet/malibu/2004/consumer-discussions.html
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving 10 mph, the power steering failed as the steering wheel seized. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where it was stated that the internal steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 27,000.
I was driving heard a pop and then the airbag light came on. i then noticed the wheel was turned half way and i was still going straight. this was very dangerous thank god i was on a street alone. i took it to the dealer (hove) they told me my extended warrant had expired due to mileage and it was 1300.00 to fix. on top of the issue of safety i also don't have the cash and i need my car. i have seen all the reports from this problem and strongly feel this should be a recalled piece. *tr
I got in my car and tried to crank it and it made a clicking noise. it took hours before it started, on another incident; several times i couldn't shift my car from park. my power steering light came on and when i was coming to a stop at a light the car list control serving left to right until i came to a complete stop. i always have to gas the car to get gas to the engine for the car to start. when i took it to the dealer he said that it was a recall problem and he's had several customers with my car come to him with the same problem. when i looked up the recall i noticed that my car was having the same issues as reported. *tr
I was driving and when i went to turn the corner my steering went out. i could barely turn it. i ended up pulling over and sat for a while but then when i started driving again it didn't do it but than it happened again on 9/08/2013. *js
I was making a turn when the power steering in my vehicle locked up, making it hard to complete the turn and leading me into the oncoming lane, striking the bumper of another vehicle. i had the car towed to a private mechanic who diagnosed the issue and replaced the steering column at my cost. less than a year later, the power steering has once more failed! i received a recall notice and took the car into the dealership. i was informed that in fact it was the recalled parts that had failed but since they were unsure of when the parts would be available, there was nothing they could do. when inquiring about a rental car, was told it is safe to drive! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel became very loose. the failure recurred several times before the steering wheel seized. the contact mentioned that the power steering and the wrench warning icon illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic however, the technician was unable to diagnosed the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vin was not available. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 110,000.
Entering expressway from ramp and merging onto expressway, then with left turn signal on i had a clear lane to merge left and when i did this the steering column locked up. luckily, i was in the lane i intended to be it, but it scared me half to death. still driving forward, and unsure if the steering would be ok again, then the steering column seemed to ease up and "unlocked" and i was able to steer it and turn it normally again. it was only for a few minutes the first time it happened and i was able to drive it normally and eventually turned back into the right-hand lane to exit the expressway to get to my destination. unfortunately, this same issue with the steering wheel/column "locking up" happened again about a week later, when i was again entering an expressway from a ramp and trying to merge onto the expressway and trying to merge left to get into the moving traffic. i took the car to a chevy dealership but they couldn't find a "code" registered for the steering wheel/column locking up and the mechanic drove the car and it didn't happen with him. is anyone at gm or the chevy engineers or the nhtsa looking in to this? i'm just now checking the nhtsa website to find out if anyone else is having this problem. i see a few reports, but no real answers for owners who are experiencing this serious and very dangerous problem. a steering wheel/column locking up even for a few seconds can cause a very serious accident and possibly a fatality. please let me know what is being done to correct this and what can i tell my chevy dealership to get them to "fix" my car so i feel safe in it again?? *tr
I contacted the nhtsa last year (2013) and i contacted gm, chevy, and my chevy dealership at that time to report that my steering column in my 2004 4-door chevy malibu had locked up when i was trying to merge onto an expressway. since then, all the news about not only this defect, but other defects as well, have been found in these gm vehicles. i finally rec'd. a safety recall ltr., but it only indicates the "part is not available" to fix my car and that i will have to wait on addl. notification as to when i can schedule a time to take my car in for the repair, since supposedly the dealership is waiting on the manufacturer of the parts in question to actually "make" the part. ???? why is it taking so long to get what the recall # 14116 indicates the part needed to repair my car is a "torque sensor assembly." i would say that before any more new cars are produced and sold that the "defective & dangerous" vehicles need to be repaired so people are not "at risk of a crash or injuries or possibly even death," due to the power steering assist going out. why are we having to wait so long on the parts needed to repair our vehicles and why isn't the highway transportation safety agency putting more pressure on the manufacturers and the dealerships to get our vehicles fixed and/or getting us temporary "replacement vehicles" until the parts are in?? one of the incidents where the steering column locked up occurred 07/19/13 (last yr.), but it has happened several more times, and once when my oldest son was driving us to and from dinner one night. so, i'm not the only one who has experienced this dangerous problem with the steering column. here's my previous complaint nhtsa id number (odi #) : 10537050. i registered addl. complaints to the nhtsa since then, and "verbal" calls/complaints to gm & chevy, but i'm still getting the run-around. please help! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated while driving approximately 65 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 120,000.
While pulling out of a business parking lot with my mother in the vehicle, i turned the steering wheel to back out and it wouldn't turn at first. i cut the car off and restarted it once again, this tie the steering wheel turned for about half a turn and the just kept on turning with a knock every full rotation. the wheels were not moving at all.no matter how many times i restarted the car it never worked. so i was forced to block half of the parking lot until my car was flat-bedded back to my house. previous to this incident i had experienced the wheel stiffen up at low speeds but it always went right away, i have seen countless people online posting stories about this happening to them, and i was just driving on the freeway minutes earlier and this could've happened then and been a tragedy, why has this not been recalled????? *tr
While driving my battery light will flash on and chirp and my steering wheel sort of locks up, the display on my radio says power steering and the wrench light lights up on the panel. it is quite scary considering i have young children in my car about 95% of the time. i have been very close to crashing into other cars more than once. i would love to get rid of this car but am afraid this will happen to the next person and it could be fatal. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving approximately 3 mph, there was a complete loss of powering steering with an illumination of a warning message. the engine was turned off and then restarted in order to reset. the vehicle was able to resume normally. the failure occurred sporadically. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000. ...updated 07-29-13 *bf
Power steering stops intermittently. warning light comes on. then goes away if the car is re-started. near accident because i couldn't steer. *tr
My daughter was driving to school this morning, and everything seemed to be fine. she pulled out of our neighborhood and into the turning lane on a fast moving street to turn into her school parking lot. as she went to turn, the steering wheel locked up right as she was turning into oncoming traffic. she said it took everything in her to turn the steering wheel enough just so she could get onto the curb and out of the way. she then went to park and could barely make it into a parking space. she said when she first started to turn, a sound went off; and a gold wrench sign appeared underneath her rpms. she turned off the car once in her parking space and then turned it back on, and the steering wheel was still locked. she did it one more time, and it finally unlocked. her, my other daughter, and my friend's two kids who were also in the car, were extremely shaken and on the verge of tears. it was a terrifying experience for them all. my most precious things in life were almost in a serious (perhaps even deadly) accident because of this power steering failure. i know this is not the first time this has been reported because i found numerous accounts of this exact same thing happening online. it's time chevrolet finally steps up, takes responsibility for this, and recalls all these vehicles to get this power steering failure fixed before it takes a life (or lives)! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while making a turn at 45 mph , the power steering malfunctioned and it extremely difficult to steer the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the power steering column and the power steering modular was defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure and current mileage was 142,000. *tr
Power steering locked up while driving. *tr
This happened a few times throughout may, happened a few times this week (may 29- june 5, 2013), and happened almost twenty times today - within a half hour period! i will be driving and then out of nowhere the steering wheel locks up, making it unable to turn in either direction. the screen reads 'power steering' when this happens. this is incredibly dangerous. it has happened to me most frequently either right after turning or in the middle of a turn, which is unfortunate since the state i live in has rounded exit and onramps - exactly where it happened to me today. it has happened on the highway multiple times today, while waiting at a red light, and while driving in city traffic. there needs to be a recall on this, because i wouldn't be surprised if this leads to my getting in a serious accident due to how often it is happening. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the power steering assist failed without warning. the vehicle was not taken or inspection. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 69,000. *tr
The car steering wheel locked up and unable to control where it was going to guide as coming around curve. ended up in ditch and shaking like crazy! im so afraid that something is going to happen. i want another car! *tr
I was living in pennsylvania at the time and as i was coming home from work i was traveling at approximately 25 to 30 mph while coming around a curve the steering went out there was no way i could steer the car and i hit 2 cars and bounced off of them into a high curb my ribs were broken and i have been having severe pain in my hip. right before the accident there was an alert tone i thought i was low on gas when i looked at my radio (this is where it tells you things) it said no power steering when i looked at my dash panel there was a wrench in a car i was trying to correct my direction but there was no way i could steer the car at all when the crash happened i was hospitalized i didn't know what to do i have tried to contact several attorneys but after all this happened i had to sell my home and move because i was unable to work. with the loss of the car i was unable to go to the hospital for follow ups as my doctor wanted. my nephew told me to write to you my vehicle was a total loss. *tr
i purchased this vehicle in 2006 with 17,000 miles at the carmax superstore in naperville illinois and have had several serious issues since. the leaking sunroof with the innumerable failed attempts at repair. the leak has never been resolved and i have resorted to covering the vehicle with a tarp during inclement weather. the constant clicking noise in the steering when moving the steering wheel back and forth and the severe stiffness in the steering wheel when curb side parking between parked vehicles. the intermittent ignition failure, the vehicle will not turn over unless you depress the accelerator slightly. there were countless futile attempts at repair for all these defects through out the years of warranty and extended warranty coverage. the failed attempts of correctly diagnosing and properly repairing these defects by the englewwood auto group in englewood new jersey have left me unsatisfied and super frustrated. today i am writing because the operators seat has now tilted to the right and is leaning against the center console. there was nothing of significance that occurred while driving that immediately alerted me of this problem, i was simply adjusting the seat when i noticed that the seat was rubbing against the center console. upon inspecting underneath the seat i observed that the right rear corner does not rise when engaging the electric seat controls. the angle of the lean is so bad that it affects my posture and pains my lower back. i am also afraid that the seat will completely collapse while i am driving. when the seat is lowered all the way down it does level to its acceptable norm, but at 5 feet 4 inches tall i cannot operate safely that low to the floor. for a vehicle that is driven on average once a week it is plagued with some serious manufacturer defects that the dealerships' service department is unable or unwilling to repair. *tr

One evening while driving on the expressway @ aprox 55mph the wrench light came on and three chimes the steering wheel locked causing loss of control resulting in a collision with the concrete wall causing suspension damage and body damage to a tune of over $3600.00! steering and stopping are more important than going! gm needs to be held accountable for this safety issue before someone is killed. *tr
While on my way home, driving north on i-95 near washington, dc, i experienced lots of electrical problems (noise and grabbing to the left in the steering column, repeated bulb and light unity failures) then suddenly, a total loss of power steering. i became so scared while needing both hands to manage in heavy traffic traveling at an average of 65mph that i immediately threw a lit cigarette out the window in a desperate effort to control the vehicle. the steering wheel is almost impossibly difficult to steer. i was unaware that it had blown behind my back onto the driver?s seat until it burnt me, my shirt and the seat. it is by the grace of god that i didn?t have a fatal accident. it is probably needless to say that i continue to experience back pain. a disaster is waiting to happen! the fact is that sometimes while driving the power steering will start working again as quickly as it went out. consider that i could be turning the wheel as hard as i can and at that second the power returns to send me spinning. keep in mind that this is occurring more frequently everyday. sometimes it does stop when the car is turned off and sometimes it does not. with regard to the brakes they make a loud and grinding sound when i lift off of them. *tr
When driving down the road my 2004 chevrolet malibu lt v6 dings and a yellow wrench comes up and on the radio it stays power steering and the steering wheel became very stiff and i could no longer control my vehicle i almost hit a car trying to pull over on the side of the road but thankfully i came to a red light put my hazards lights on and turned the car on and off.... this has happened to me multiple times and different occasions this is a very dangerous feature to deal with on this car it makes it unsafe and you don't know when its going to happen it would be a miracle if chevrolet would recall such a dangerous feature seeing how this is a manufacturer defect. *tr
Approx 1-3 prior to my power steering locking up, the power steering message appeared on my dashboard. i had tried to locate the power steering reservoir when the alarm first displayed only to learn being low on power steering fluid wasn't the situation that it i owned a 2004 chevy malibu ls that had electric power steering. by this time it was too late, i quickly learned that situation results in your steering wheel to become completely locked! as i was pulling out of my stall at a packed parking lot. i was unable to move the steering wheel, it had completely locked up, i believe my car was only slightly moving because i was parked at a slant. i then put the car in parked, turned off the engine, said a prayer and started the car again. this time the steering wheel worked completely fine. the next day as i was driving my car to my auto mechanic i felt my steering wheel become tight again after going over the railroad tracks, i pulled over right away since there was no traffic and i didn't want to learn the hard way my steering wheel gave out again. i then turn the car back off and on even tho it wasn't locked like the night before, just for peace of mind i guess and the wheel returned back to normal. after talking with my mechanic, info i learned on line i am taking my car to a chevy dealership because apparently this is a problem they are familiar with and are the only auto mechanic shop that carriers a special tool to "fix" the situation. if it is even fixable, based on what i'm reading i'm better off saving my money fixing the issue that can't be fixed so i can use it to get a new car! losing control of the steering wheel to a moving vehicle at any given moment is insane. the fact that 2005 and on chevy malibu cars have been recalled for this very issue already should make a open shut case!.. please, why must we lose a life in order to save a dollar!? *tr
I was driving on the interstate and all of the sudden i lost power steering. the light on the dash came on and the information panel said "power steering" i was able to pull to the side to the road and turn off the car. once i started it again i had power steering. i drive for a living and this scared me to death. i have never had anything like this happen before. there seems to be an abundant number of complaints for this problem. how many complaints does it take to have someone figure this out?!!!! *tr
Driving down the road when the radio panel started blinking with power steering. i then lost my power steering and my car began to shake this failure occurs without any warning and sometimes the power steering light will illuminate and it will show in the radio panel. as a woman, driving without power steering was extremely difficult. this is not the first time this happened to me it has happened several times and thankfully i was able to avoid an accident. i took the car to the dealer, and after running diagnostics, they told me that the 2004 malibu's have electronic power steering, and that there is an issue with the power steering motor and that it overheats, causing loss of power steering. the car seat belts are froze and the hazard light button fell inside its hole and the headlight covers don't allow the lights to fully illuminate . this car should have been recalled because it poses life threatening issues. my research shows a high volume of complaints on this 2004 model but the 2005's and above were recalled, i also collected statements from factory workers who left their personal info on the internet and i found this : during my employment contract with delphi automotive (delphi saginaw steering system, 3900 e. holland ave., saginaw, michigan 48601), i was instructed to conduct a screw "strip-out" study on the electric motor/controller assembly of the electric power steering (eps) system of the general motor's epsilon platform (my 2003.5 - 2006 malibu). this study was conducted in may of 2004 at delphi's plant 1, assembly. the study included ten production motor and ten production controller assemblies that were assembled on the production equipment and process(es). the controller is attached to motor by three m 5.0x 0.8 screws. the result of that study concluded that four of the ten motor/controller assemblies had at least one of the screws fully strip
As i was turning a corner the power steering went out. this is the third incident in a week, each one as the vehicle was turning. *tr
Attempted to execute a turn into parking lot driveway and the steering would not respond. after passing driveway, attempted to turn in either direction and steering would not respond more than a few degrees (< 10) of direction. traveled approximately another half mile attempting to turn around and return home before enough steering was restored to complete a turn around. afterward, steering has been intermittent and difficult to impossible. this condition is a safety hazard and should be addressed by gm before someone is seriously hurt or killed, if they haven't been already. *tr
My wife recently experienced a major problem with the power steering unit in her 2004 malibu while driving with the kids. she says all of a sudden, the 'wrench' light came on, the radio display read "power steering" and she lost all power steering in the car, nearly causing her to crash. this morning, i took her car as i work much closer to home. sure enough, there is no power steering in the car at all. after reading online, i am confused as to whether there is or is not a recall on this unit, as there appears to have been alot of trouble with the power steering in this year of vehicle, and even have a recall on the 2005 model. we have had the car for several years and had little trouble with it until recently. my local dealership tells me it would cost $96 just to look at the car and then whatever it would cost to fix the problem, but unable to guarantee the problem would remain fixed. i am in a similar position as many, unable to afford a new car or even pay an exorbitant amount for repairs that may or may not fix the issue. *tr i need clear answers. can you please let me know my options. is there a recall i can look for? if there isn't, why not, since there have been so many issue with the power steering in this model? needing help,
Making left hand turn power steering failed, almost caused me to run up over curb, very hard to steer, happens fast light on dash steering gone! bought car used on 2/16/13 steering failed first time on 2/17/13 took back to dealer on 2/18/13 dealer said they replaced power steering motor.car seemed ok for about a week, then power steering failed again on 2/24/13 turning left low speed in my driveway.car going back to dealer today 2/25/13. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while parked, the power steering warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. after shutting the engine off and restarting the vehicle, the failure light turned off. the contact stated that later, while driving approximately 35 mph, the steering wheel seized. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician advised that the steering column would have to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 106,000.
Pulling out of the garage the power steering went out. i drove it without power steering for about 3 miles, parked the vehicle and shut it off. went inside the business & came out about a half hour later & the steering worked fine. i've researched this issue on line and have found that gm has recalled vehicles for this issue but not the 2004 malibu. this vehicle has also been serviced 3 times in past years for steering related parts including a rack & pinion unit. my daughter has a 2005 chevy cobalt & her vehicle was recalled for this very same issue. *tr
My son, at college, was driving home when a chime sounded, power steering went out, and warning light came on. he pulled over and called me. first time this has occurred since we bought car in 2008. i talked to a mechanic, a couple of service managers, and looked this complaint up on the web. found out that hundreds of malibu owners have had the same problem. gm has not issued a recall for the 2004, but has for later years about this problem. this is a potentially life-threatening problem that could lead to a serious accident if it occurs while driving on a curvy, back-road highway or during a quick evasive turn. it looks like it will be an expensive fix that each owner must pay themselves. gm should stand behind their product and issue a recall. *tr
Power steering went out unexpectantly. nearly adverted a wreck. *tr
I was driving my sons 2004 malibu when suddenly there was a few dings followed by the car symbol light with the wrench inside it on the dash light up. the wheel immediately became difficult to turn . it's as if the power steering stopped working. i drove to a safe location, turned off the car and the problem was gone. this does not seem right to me. please have gm rectify this issue. *tr
2004 malibu ls-driving down the highway today and the bell goes off, the yellow wrench appears and the radio shows power steering. the power steering just went out all at once and i almost ran into a truck. called the chevrolet dealership and they stated there is not a recall on this and it is also not covered under the powertrain warranty. nhtsa please issue a recall on this power steering problem before it causes someone to loose their life. i have a 1998 malibu ls and a 2004 malibu ls and they both have gave me problems. i will never purchase another one. As for the lighting i cannot count how many light bulbs i have replaced on this vehicle to the point that i had the auto shop replace them since i thought i was doing something wrong. they only last about a month or two and burn out which is really dangerous when you don't know if will work or not. the steering issue is a much more dangerous problem, this is my wife's car and she got stuck leaving the house and physically could not turn the steering wheel which she described as locking up. i can not imagine if she were to be turn down a busy intersection on not been able to turn the vehicle to the proper lane. this is dangerous and should be a recall item as the 2005's were!!! *tr
2004 chevrolet malibu. consumer writes in regards to reimbursement for power steering recall repairs. *smd the consumer was informed the recalled part and the part that was replaced on her vehicle were not the same. the repair shop replaced a bad switch and steering column. *jb
Driving down the road. car power steering went out. almost wrecked because i could not steer vehicle. now the power steering goes in and out as it wishes. the steering wheel jerks to the left when it does decide to work. sometimes turning the car on and off will make the power steering come back on. *tr
