Today after dropping my son off at school, my 2004 chevrolet malibu 3.5 v6 became nearly impossible to steer. it felt like the car had 2 flat tires in the front. with great struggle i was able to get the car off the road and avoid crashing. had i not been strong enough to turn the car others could have been killed. this was a near miss. after having the problem this morning, i discovered that gm issued a recall for this problem. the recall id is 102634. gm has not implemented the recall even though they issued a press release on the problem on 3-31-14. i have spent the last 5 hours on the phone with 2 chevrolet dealers and gm trying to find a solution since "they are aware of the problem but have not loaded my vin into their system." people are being injured and likely dying because of this issue. *tr
My battery light came on this morning and i came home from lunch tried making a left turn onto a street and my steering wheel locked on me. i couldn't turn my car, now my car won't even start. i barely made it home, thank god because i almost crashed into my neighbors house from my steering wheel locking. *tr

2004 chevrolet malibu. consumer writes in regards to vehicle power steering issues. *smd the consumer stated the power steering loss occurred intermittently. he was informed the vehicle was not included in the recall, and the best thing to do, was to sell it, or give it to a junk yard, as the cost to repair it, exceeded the value of the vehicle. the consumer received a second opinion, and it was determined there were no leaks and there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. a few weeks prior, the inner and outer rods were replaced.*jb
While the car was turning out of a driveway something broke inside the rack and pinion. this left the car with no steering. i think if this is a common problem with these cars there should be a recall. if this happened at highway speeds, people could get hurt or worse. *tr
Had driven car with no issues previous. had parked car in parking lot. about 30 minutes later went to start the car and immediately the service wrench light came on and noticed the power steering was not working. after a minute or so, turned the car off, then turned it back on. wrench light was off and the power steering was working, but now when applying a slight right turn motion on the steering wheel, the wheel shakes/chatters/bounces. this happens either in gear or not. it does not do this when turning the wheel left or when applying increased pressure turning right. it seems to be getting worse and wondering if this has something to do with the upcoming power steering recall. *tr

A chiming noise came on, then a light with a wrench on it. my steering did not feel right so i pulled over. that night i heard about my recall. i'm afraid to drive my car. its been parked since then.gm will not pay for a rental car, so i had to pay for my own last night at $200 a week. *tr
I was driving the car through an intersection approaching the ramp onto the interstate. i lost steering control for about 2 seconds, just missing the guard-rail and having an accident. the next morning, there was a recall for the 2004 malibu. i contacted the dealership for a loaner car, only to be told the car vin number is not an approved model for the recall. i need to know why it is not if it is having the same issues. i have reported to this site at least twice about issues with this car. *tr
I was driving down interstate, and the steering locked up. it ding about 2 seconds before it went out. it was good i was on a straight stretch of the highway and not going into a curve or passing another vehicle. or if my wife or kids were driving , it could have been an major incident. i was reading up on it afterwards on line, say chevrolet had problems with the electronic powersteering, but no recall was performed. i just want to let other drivers/owners aware it could go out anytime. *tr
I have a lot of play in my steering wheel there is a light that keeps coming on with a wrench in the middle of car? while driving the vehicle it seems as if the steering wheel is going to come a part from dashboard have to drive with 2 hands cause it shakes some what . i am unable to drive on freeway much afraid at this point .. if u could check to see if there is a recall on this i would appreciate it ... dont want an accident . notified brown & brown chevy , mesa,az they said there was a recall on this ? my car is a 2004 chevy malibu. *js
Power steering stopped working. had to replace the steering column and steering motor. was re-placed at a private mechanic as i did not know there was a recall. since finding out concerning the recall i have called and called gm sends recall notices for everything except the correct recall. all i want is to be reimbursed for the cost of repairing the car. they can not seem to understand i have already had the car repaired. when you do get a letter for a recall they say they know that it could be dangerous they are concerned but the parts are not available yet. i have received 2 recall letters for things having nothing to do with my repair and they say the same thing. so strange my mechanic could get parts but gm can't??? thank you (this is the second notice i have sent). *tr
The power steering would just stop working. i had to pay $563.14 for a hazardous recall that was repaired one previous time, and that g.m. would no longer honor. *tr

At first the warning light would come on then the car began to lose the power steering, then it finally went out completely. i had the car repaired, then my daughter and son in law found out the car had been recalled. i would just like to be reimbursed for the cost of the repair. i have called tom bannan chevrolet in madison tennessee. who does not return my call. thank you *tt
I was leaving work and started my car and the power steering was not working. the check engine light on my dash panel also came on. this happened in a separate instance a couple days prior. the first time it happened i turned the car off and restarted it and the power steering was fine. the second instance i tried to restart the car a couple times with no change. i took the car home and then to the dealership where i get my maintenance done the next day. they replaced a power steering component and i paid for the charges. this all happened prior to my knowledge of these recalls. *tr
While driving, the check engine light randomly came on, and then about 30 seconds later i lost power steering. power steering came back on its own about 40 minutes later, after letting the car sit. *tr
steering quits working while driving the car. *tr
Bought car on 2-6-14. within i months time, sensors registered 4 times power steering problems. gm has recalled this model from 2005 and up . but not the 2004 models with the same problems. the kelly blue book still holds the car at $5300.00. just wondering if someone can help me out of this jam. bought the car for my 23 year old daughter and afraid that she might get hurt or killed. *tr
I have had my car since 2011. i didn't have any problems with my car until 2012. my steering shaft broke and it was replaced at a chevy dealership. all was fine until this year in march, where my steering was becoming very hard to do. when i turned my wheel, it would make sounds as if it was breaking and i needed to use a little more force to turn the wheel. as of may 15, 2014, i took my car to a chevy dealership where a family member asked if they could see if any parts on my car was on recall and there are several recalls for the malibu. my steering is getting worse by the day and my car is driving horribly. i have a 4 yr and this is my only transportation to and from work. i'm afraid to drive too far because the steering wheel might get stuck and may cause an accident. i wanted to report this before something actually happened. *js

Daughter was turning the corner and the steering wheel stop turning and she ran into a snow bank. car is inoperable now. the car had been difficult to turn since i purchased it. i took it to a mechanic who couldn't find anything wrong with it. i also took it back to the dealership where i purchase and they would not honor the warranty, and this was only a couple of weeks after i purchased it. *tr

Randomly while driving down the road my power steering has gone out multiple times. i listed the most recent date. now they say it will cost around 1000 to fix. if multiple people have complained about this shouldn't their be a recall? if the roads were icy i could've crashed and killed someone. *tr

I was backing out of my driveway and the power steering light came on and i lost power steering. i shut the car off and it reset and the power steering came back on. this has happened numerous times since where the power steering goes out by it self with no warning. seems like it happens more at slower speeds, but what happens when i do not expect it and i need the power steering. my young daughter drives it sometimes also. *tr
As i was driving, the power in the steering began to lock, causing me temporarily loss of control of the steering. luckily i was only going about 10-15 mph at the time, but i could hear clicking sounds under the steering wheel and a few lights flashed on the dashboard. i was not able to see which lights because by the time i applied the brakes and tried to avoid hitting the curb, the lights flashed off and i was able to continue driving. *tr
Recall was announced months ago for the steering, but still have not received any recall notice or information. i had to have it replaced and paid for it because it failed. was told by gm 800 service number that i would be getting a notice, which would have instructions on how to be reimbursed. as of today,06/03/14, i have received nothing. *tr
My 16 year old daughter was stopped at a four way intersection. as she proceeded to turn, she lost her ability to steer the car. she was able to avoid hitting another car and get her car to the side of the road. she noticed there was a yellow dash board light that came on when she lost the steering but no prior warning of any issues or warning lights prior to loosing the steering on the vehicle. once she got to the side of the road, her four way emergency flashers would not work. my husband went to pick her up. he restarted the car and the steering worked fine for him. there was no warning lights indicating any problem on the dash board. we brought the car to our mechanic he could not get the problem to resurface. he did note that the directional turn signals seemed to be "messed up" and he changed the light bulbs. when she lost her steering a second time we had the vehicle towed to a different mechanic who told us this was a chronic defect issue with this make/brand of vehicle and that it needed a new electronic component in the steering column which would cost us $900.00. i researched this information on the internet and found that there are thousands of complaints for this very issue. it occurs at different amounts of mileage. it occurs on the vehicles when they were purchased brand new and purchased used as in our case. this is not your normal wear and tear type of vehicle issue. this is a significant safety issue which is an engineering/design flaw in the vehicle. i have called the gm customer service line. our case # is 71-127-262-2441. we now have to bring the car to our local chevy dealer and they have told us that it could cost way more just to diagnose the problem than to repair it. unbelievable...please help look into this safety issue as my daughter could of been killed herself and or could have caused injury to someone else without any forewarning. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that after starting the engine, the power steering assist malfunctioned making the steering wheel very difficult to turn. the contact indicated that the failure was recurring. the vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic, who determined that the power steering module was faulty. the power steering module was replaced but the vehicle continued to exhibit the failure. the manufacturer was notified but no solution was offered. the failure mileage was 100,000. updated 04-23-14 *bf
Driving at 55mph out of nowhere powersteering lost power. had no control of steering as well as the vehicle. finally power steering returned to normal and i was able to pull the car off the road. checked for error codes and found out the code is for a sensor for the electronic steering for this vehicle. many complaints about this issue. why has no recall been put in place for this known problem. will be going to see an attorney too file a lawsuit. you would think that the steering of the car would be a number 1 priority for any car maker . *tr
While operating this car the power steering will go out. in order to re-set this you must put the car into neutral, shut the car off, turn the car back on and put back in gear. if this does not work we must start the process over. all at the same time of trying to get the car off the road. gm has ignored my request for a replacement car due to a couple other issues. no parts are available for the recalls on my car& gm does not know when they will be available. i have a 3 month old being transported in the vehicle. this vehicle also travels 65 miles a day on the interstate to & from work. gm does not see the importance of the safety issues being presented on a daily basis not only to me & my family but to anyone traveling around me on the interstate. i am tired of getting the run around. i have several emails that show no response to the situation. *tr
Backing out of driveway steering light came on and steering wheel very hard to turn, next time vehicle started problem was not there, happened again two days later at stop sign, almost turned into on coming traffic. very dangerous problem. 2005 and up recalled why not 2004? *tr

First of all i don't really expect this issue to be fixed as it has been going on for 10 years now with nothing happening to remedy the situation from either the government or chevrolet,im doing this like others im sure to bring the problem to the front door and to make myself feel a little better, this car was meant to be a first car for my daughter and still is .what needs to be done is at least notify buyers that the malibu has a very dangerous problem with the power steering before they buy it and that expect to pay at least 700.00 dollars once if your lucky.but most likely at least three times that amount according to owners and that chevrolet has created a power steering system that will fail and hopefully not only kill the person driving it but others as well, and nobody seems to care or do anything, what's really bad is even if its fixed, the problem will likely occur again as this problem isn't even fixable by the same company that created it well i hope someone reads this but i doubt it and hopefully there's someone with morals still out there that has more power to do something than the average consumer can who knows this problem is the most obvious case of corporate greed and larceny i have ever seen in my life yet they are still getting away with it.go usa. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering assist failed and the steering wheel was hard to turn. the failure recurred intermittently over a period of six months. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who replaced the steering column and torque angle sensor. the manufacturer was notified of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 90,000.
I was traveling on the interstate and went to make an exit, turn and lost the power steering after the wrench displayed on the dashboard. per the dealer they advised the sensor is bad/faulty. i reviewed the other complaints similar to my experience per chevy my vin was not included in the investigation # pe04031 i would like to see the matter further researched if im having the exact issues as the other malibus im not understanding why gm would repair the issue especially considering the safety issue. *tr
After purchasing my malibu i have had multiple incidents where i was unable to unlock my doors electrically from inside/outside (after a fight with the dealer that issue was fixed after being told i needed to bring the car back and forth for 3 weeks), since then i have had to replace my turn signal bulbs once a month, my left turn signal socket looks like it has been burnt and is very black in color, still cant get gm to acknowledge that there were problems with this on these malibu's even though there are service bulletins on this issue. next i have had my dic system show me messages saying locked and my radio shuts off erratically and my ignition will shut off. gm dealer will not accept responsibility, next i have had the message on my dic show no power steering and 3 out of the 4 times i have lost steering all together and luckily was backing out of driveway, had to shut car off and wait for system to give me back steering control. the 4th time i veered into a guard rail going about 25 mph and crunched my front passenger quarter panel when the ps assist failed and i had no steering. again, shut car off and had to wait for system to reset and again had steering control. i am now having issues where my entire console in the vehicle is always hot to the touch and my ignition switch inside the car is extremely hot even right after the car is started. gm will not address this issue either when i have contacted the dealer where i bought the vehicle. i am now having steering issues where my malibu wants to go left when i am attempting to make a right turn and when making a left turn it wants to go way left all by itself. i have multiple recalls on this vehicle and to no avail they are not being addressed. i am wondering if i have to be in a worse crash and be injured severely or another person in order to get anyone to fix these issues or take this car back. *tr

When driving down the road my cars power steering suddenly went out and the alarm came on, on the radio "power steering" . sometimes it goes out just by putting my car reverse or drive. it also will go out while turning! this is a very serious issue as i have two small children and this can cause a wreck. this is my only way of going i can't afford to fix gms mistake! *tr
