Problems with 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On average, the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and its various aspects after 102 098 miles.

Recently reported FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM problems on 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

A plastic component in the fuel return cracked causing a gas leak that was unrecognizable at first. first noticed the scent a week after adopting a cat and assumed it must have peed in the car or something. at first, only noticed it after driving more than a few minutes and parking the car. when the car was left in park overnight, it would not smell in the morning, however once it was driven any distance, the smell would become apparent by the time the trip was done. the smell was faint and seemed to come from the passenger side of the car, but was not strong enough to be narrowed down more than that. eventually the scent was strong enough that it could be recognized as gasoline and by that time it was clear that it was coming from behind the passenger seat. upon lifting the back end to look at the car, the underside was wet with gasoline and the source of the leak could be isolated to the top of the tank. took it in to be checked and fixed to find out it was a crack in a plastic component of the fuel return and the way the component is designed, the entire fuel pump had to be replaced. received a notice from gm about potential fuel leaks and submitted my information only to learn that the current bulletin pertains to the fuel tank itself and all other service bulletins related to this particular issue are for different car batches sold mostly to warmer climate states so gm will not reimburse for the repair.

I am having a severe gas leak, and though i live in florida, and the recall was listed in 2012 (nhtsa 12v459000) i never received notice and when i run recalls by vin # it does not list it. i do not know if i can have it fixed under this recall or not. i did live in florida at the time of the recall

In june 2015, we smelled fuel under car. the next day we took the car immediately to our mechanic who replaced the fuel pump at a cost of $531.85. in august of 2015, we received a letter from chevrolet that indicated our cobalt may have a cracked fuel tank inlet control valve. the letter said that the vehicle may emit a strong fuel odor from the rear of the vehicle which is what we detected. the letter indicated we could be reimbursed if we submitted the requested documents if we already had the vehicle repaired. i submitted all documents to our local chevrolet dealer but was denied reimbursement.

i smelt gas very strongly and was coming out of top of gas tank. i took it to weeks tires,1883 hickman ave, elba, alabama,36323... (334)897-2270. upon taking it to them i was shown the hole in the fuel line on the fuel pump. i have noticed the recalls on this vehicle in other states. i had to pay $543.70 for parts and labor.

smell gas very strongly and gas is coming from the top of the gas tank.there was a recall for this vehicle model in 2009. now it is closed. no longer open. what can be done about this problem?

My car had smelled of gasoline for approximately 1 week. i had the vehicle serviced and i had to replace my fuel pump module assembly. it had leaking and cracked lines. i have researched online and discovered recalls for this same year make and model vehicle and was never notified of any possible problem. this is a major safety issue and could have resulted in a catastrophe for my family. i have contacted gm and i am trying to get reimbursed for the repairs to my vehicle. *tr

I noticed a strong gas odor. when i looked under the car, it was dripping gasoline onto the muffler heat shield and onto the pavement. i looked on the nhtsa website and see that certain chevy cobalts are under recall for a problem with the fuel pump cracking and leaking. my car is experiencing the same problem as the ones under recall, the fuel pump cracked causing the leak. when i contacted general motors, i was told sorry your vin # is not under recall. i am not happy that my car has the same problem as the recalled cars but i am stuck paying the bill for a new fuel pump. this vehicle should be recalled along with the rest. *tr

My chevrolet cobalt 2007 was called for a recall, even though my car was running perfectly i decided to take it to the closest chevrolet dealership to me. at the dealership they changed the power steering wheel, the ignition and all that had to do with it, and to my surprise they also changed the fuel pump. when i received my car from the dealer i noticed a fuel odor coming from my car, i did not pay attention to it because i thought it was normal since they changed the fuel pump. after a couple of days i took my car back since i noticed a big gas leak on the driveway when i moved my car. the dealership checked the car and said it had nothing to do with the recall and that the filler neck was cracked, and that i might have possibly hit my car and cracked the filler neck. i was very frustrated and i talked to managers and everything, but the only response i got was that they will not cover it and that i will have to pay for it. after calling general motors and chevrolet, they told me that i had to pay $500 dollars for the repair and that they will cover the rest. i was very upset and frustrated, but i am a college student and i work, so i needed my car. i paid the $500 dollars out of credit cards because i did not have the money for a mistake that they made and people at the dealership even told me they did because they said that the filler neck is plastic and that with the weather changes in houston when "handled" can crack easily. i thought it was a total fraud and i want my $500 dollars back and also the fee they charged to check it which was almost $85 dollars. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the vehicle was leaking fuel. the contact believed that the failure was related to nhtsa campaign number: 12v459000 (fuel system, gasoline). the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 123,487.

Fuel line located approximately in the middle of the vehicle is leaking and appears to be rusted out. this fuel line runs parallel to the exhaust system and with fuel leaking is a potential fire/explosion hazard. local dealer telsl me it will cost somewhere between $700 to $1,000 to repair. my online research indicates this is a common problem with these vehicles and i believe the potential for fire should be of immediate concern. *tr

Vehicle leaks gasoline. a lot of it. took the car to the dealer and had the fuel pump module replaced (supposedly) as part of a recall. took the car in a second time because it was leaking a significant amount of gasoline, particularly after putting gas in the gar. according to the dealer, it is a crack in the gas tank, and the problem is not the fuel pump module. the gas tank crack could very well be related to the recalled faulty fuel pump. the dealer might be using the gas tank to explain away the fuel pump issue. they have kept my car for a couple days now and want to charge me a diagnostic fee for telling me that it is an issue not related to the recall. this is very dangerous. the leaking fuel is enough to set the car on fire. the dealer could be exploiting customers (for profit) that come in for the fuel pump recall, although i haven't observed any clear evidence of this. *tr

I was driving in town and suddenly lost all power. i had to use the momentum of the car to move over 2 lanes of traffic in order to get pulled to the side of the road. had it towed to the mechanic and found out that both the fuel pump and the electrical panel under my fuse box had gone out. this cost me over $1800.00 to have fixed and the mechanic states gm was aware of the fuse box issue and to watch for a recall. also the fuel pump was a specialty that was not placed in most cars of this year/model and had to be ordered from the factory. the problems that are happening with these cars are ridiculous. gm should have to pay the owners to have the entire car replaced. *tr

Noticed smell of leaking fuel. checked recall site for chevrolet and called chevrolet recall telephone number but was told it was not under recall but under "special warranty". took to dealer and was told that fuel pump was under "special warranty" but the tank was also leaking and this was not covered under the warranty. this is a safety issue that i strongly feel that not only should the fuel pump be covered, but also the tank itself. *tr

My 2007 cobalt started to smell like fuel the past few months at first outside then strong on inside. my father looked under the car, and noticed around where the fuel pump is located fuel was spilling over and was also in the tray under gas tank. we called a dealer and he said that their is a recall , but our state indiana was not included. how can this be , this is a fire hazard, and possible death trap. if you acknowledge a defect it should be every where. indian has had extremely hot weather over the last several years. *tr

Fuel leak at fuel pump module - see below my e-mail to gm, dealer is holding my car until payment. i have a 2007 chevy cobalt with the fuel leak coming from the top of the tank, running down to the bottom of the tank - i can smell gas when exiting or walking past the car - vin # [xxx]... today at 4:56 pm. i haven't gotten a reply on my inquire. i spoke to a gm customer service and they told me to take the car to chevy dealer and if it is the fuel pump module that is leaking, they would talk to the dealer. i received a call from the dealer that i need to pay $250.00 for the car - why? and i never gave them authorization to repair and i will make payment. the dealer is holding my car for payment. i need my care, currently i am using a rental car, which i intend to put in a claim to gm. please advice. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Car was parked in parking lot. when car was started and noticed strong smell of gas and found gas to be running out of bottom. managed to get it home. home is very close to store. upon inspection found holes in the fuel line. beginning to rust out. car is only 7 years old and developing severe rust underneath. if not have noticed leak could have caught fire with ignition source. *tr

I am having the fuel leak/heavy vapor smell on the known issue with this type model car that is registered in az, ca, and various other hot climate states. it is known that the fuel pump seal cracks and can cause a fire if severe enough. i took this into midway chevy in hopes that they would realize the safety issue this known problem presents, however i was informed that it is my problem to deal with because my specific vin is not covered in the limited recall with the fuel pump. gm needs to get their act together and issue a regional recall and i hope that a serious incident does not have to occur before the realize the need to take care of their customers. *tr

Car was hesitant to start; after getting the car started, smelled fuel strongly. saw fuel leaking from rear drivers side of car. there is a previous recall for my state, but the car was originally purchased in new york so they will not cover the repair. *tr

After being sick from the chevy cobalt (headaches and vomiting) due to the strong fuel smell, i took the car into a chevrolet dealership for a recall of the fuel pump modular, at the time i left the dealership my check engine light was off. a few weeks later the strong fuel smell was back, i then took my car to 2 independent mechanics and advanced auto parts. all 3 said the same thing, i had a leak due to the fuel system. i was told to just take my car back to the dealership and they'd replace it free of charge as it was their fault and a chevy issue. i went to the dealership the next day, and acted encountering a rude and condescending employee i was told they wouldn't fix my car which has a crack in the fuel tank. my car has never been in an accident, so how does this happen? i looked online and this is a common problem in association with the recall of the fuel pump, but chevy isn't doing anything about it. *tr

Started to smell gas from my car. had to replace fuel pump was leaking fuel. looked up recall for fuel pump after friend told me of letter received for her car. i am from missouri but the recall was for cars sold in other states. had same issue with fuel pump that was on recall. i never received any information about recall for this though my friend, also from missouri, with newer model did. *tr

I've owned my cobalt for a little over a year and it is at 75,657 miles. so far i have replaced the fuel pump, which is now covered by the recall, but i didn't have a certified chevy dealership replace the part so it isn't reimbursable. now the fuel feed pipe has a leak and sprays fuel on the engine and electrical connections to the backside when the vehicle is running. i am not sure what would cause this to leak as it doesn't rub against anything nor is it leaking on the under side where road damage could have occurred. it seems apparent that chevy has some major design flaws with their fuel system and quality parts. *tr

I have been smelling fuel vapor order in my car for a while and had received a recall letter for it. so i took it in to tom gill chevrolet and they had replaced my fuel pump for free. at the same time i had the engine light come on and it read "p0442 evap system small leak detected" figured the fuel pump was related. after they have replaced it, i still had the engine light on and it came to be the same problem. at the same time, i been having performance issues and every time i parked the car i still smell gas as i get out of the car. i got my brakes replaced and while they were up there i checked the gas tank and found out that the gas tank is leaking where the filler hose was connected to. i have never had anyone or myself messed with the gas tank since i bought it new off the lot in 2007 till tom gill chevrolet in florence, ky had recently did work on it. so i took it back to them the next day i found out about the gas tank and had them take a look at it, and they have told me that the gas tank is cracked and needs to be replaced. priced it to be $1000. i have explained to them why they did not detect this before and they had told me that the leak was from the top of the tank and there was no way of telling that the leak came from where the filler hose was connected to. the thing is after looking under my car at the dealership and thought about it for a minute, and i know just by looking that you can distinguish from the top of the tank and the side of the tank where the leak was coming from. i come from a family of mechanics and know well enough that they were blowing smoke at me and covering up their issues. i have also investigated this issue on the internet and have found that other people have had the same problems with this vehicle as i have and also been through the dealership and got the same ring around like i have. *tr

A couple of years ago, i had to replace the fuel pump and another part that goes with the fuel pump on the chevy cobalt. i did not have the money to take it to a dealer so a friend replaced the parts for me at cost. (yes he got the fuel pump from the dealer) after receiving a recall letter on these parts i took it to the dealer and they were going to do exactly what i had already paid to have done. i found my receipt from the mechanic and filled out the form that was sent with the recall letter and mailed them in. instead of being reimbursed for having it already fixed i am being told that since i did not take it to a dealer i cannot be reimbursed. i personally do think this is fair. i could not afford 800.00 plus dollars that the dealer or authorized mechanic wanted to do this work. i guess i can understand rules are rules, but you should also consider that not everyone is able to afford the outlandish prices dealerships and certain mechanics are charging for repairs. *tr

Took vehichle to dealership regarding fuel pump/return port crack recall which was covered under recall, however, was told that my fuel tank was also cracked and needed to be replaced all together. was told this was not covered or related to recall and cost would be out of my pocket (close to $700), including cost of the rental vehicle. i was told that if i did not replace the fuel tank, fumes would still be emitted and could potentially cause a vehicle fire. i have read other complaints with similar conditions that resulted in having to replace the entire fuel tank as well. i feel this needs to be investigated as a related issue to the current recall. i feel the investigation should be extended to include how this recall impacts the entire fuel and exhaust system. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact received nhtsa recall campaign number: 12v459000 (fuel system, gasoline); however, gm stated that the vehicle would not be repaired because the vehicle was not registered in the correct state. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was unknown. the vin was unavailable.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt ls. the contact stated that after refueling, fuel seeped from the fuel tank filler seal. the contact added that in order to avoid the failure, the tank could be filled to no more than half of a tank. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the fuel tank would need to be replaced. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 119,000. the vin was unavailable.

Gmac issued recall of 07 cobalts as well as other model years regarding fuel pump. i had the same issue with my vehicle, but was told that since it wasn't registered in the few states involved, i could not be reimbursed. i believe this recall should be expanded. my car was in florida, for a while. i have relatives there, but since it's not registered there, supposedly my issue wasn't their responsibility. *tr

On 02/16/2013 while my car was parked attention was brought to a substance leaking from my vehicle upon further investigation it was determined to be gas leaking out of my gas tank. i took my car to chevy because i discovered that other people had this same problem and that there had been a recall. the dealership then informed me there had been a recall but not for my vin. *tr

Started smelling gasoline so i took the car into ed bozart and they said that my vin was not included in a recall for the fuel pump and that it would cost $700 to replace it and the filter. the service person said that there were recalls for the fuel pump but my vin number was not included. my car only has 33,000 miles on it and it should not have problem until 75,000 to 124,000 miles. i would like to see what i can do to recouple my expenses. *tr
