The steering gives out on my 2007 chevy cobalt and there is play in the steering when it does work as well as popping and rattling noises. it is very dangerous, hard to steer, the steering locks up and i have lost control of the vehicle several times as a result. this happens when the vehicle is in motion when turning either left or right.
The steering gives out and locks up while vehicle is in motion when turning either left or right. there is also play in the steering wheel when vehicle is in motion or sitting stationary. the steering makes popping and rattling noises when turning either direction when vehicle is in motion or when sitting stationary. this is a very dangerous known issue with the chevy cobalt and i have lost control of my vehicle as a result of these issues went off the road into the ditch and barley avoided a head on collision.
It starting having flashing dashboard lights once as i was driving it just a few blocks from my home the first time it happened all gauges go everywhere up down or stop it looks like a christmas tree! and before the gear shift had some clicking at times. the clicking started then the gauges started going all over and the speed was all over then dropped to 0 not to move again. it's been happening on and off for about 8 years but as time goes on it's getting really bad i've kept looking for recalls as did my mother as she had the car before my owning it. it now does this anytime and the steering stops working with no notice or if it's not working and trying to pull over as it did on an on-ramp it kicked on and made the car jump into side lane about half way into that lane. had it been a two lane road and a car coming towards me it would have been a dead head head on collision as it takes time and a lot of power to move the car when the steering is like a 1950 tractor in a wet field! i have back issues and don't have the upper arm strength that it really needs. there in no real warning when it's going to happen. but sometimes i hear a click and it happens a few seconds later. also the interior lights every one through inside of the car stopped working about 3 months when my parents bought the car used back in june 08 they have never worked since. it had like 23,000 miles on it roughly. they was in middle 60s back then. it's now a family car and it's scary to have to drive it but i've got money in it i can't afford a replacement now. i have video of what it does. i just have videos no pictures.
Takata recall as i was driving through a parking lot all the dashboard needles went crazy then my steering was hard to turn so i immediately put the vehicle in park and shut off the vehicle, i tried to start the car and it didn't want to start eventually it started after a few more trys to turn the car back on. also the key ignition is hard to turn when inserting the key into the ignition, air bag service is always showing on my dash when i'm driving
I started my vehicle and put in reverse and i noticed that the steering wheel was a little stiff. i looked down and saw the power steering signal on the dash. on the expressway, on the way home, at times it worked smoothly and at other times it got hard to handle. it was fairly consistent (on working intermittently) on the way home even on main roads doing 35-45 miles per hour.

While driving at 40 mph getting off exit 100 off of route 81, the power steering to the right wasn't working, being very hard to turn. as i turned the steering wheel a little to the left, the steering loosened and allowed me to turn right very slowly. i returned to driving as the steering seemed to be working properly as a few tests in the parking lot indicated that it was working properly. fortunately, i made it home but as i turned to the street to take me home, i heard a loud clunk from the front. as i turned into the driveway, i heard the clunk again. i let the car sit overnight. when leaving the next morning, the steering wheel, nor the tires themselves, would turn to the right at all! the steering motor had been replaced by a recall and then i had to replace the replacement 3 years later! i had to have the tie rod ends replaced under warranty with only 15,000! now i don't know if i want to put more money into it. it wasn't a horrible car and it did well, but seeing all these posts makes me think this was a design flaw that they turned a blind to.

On 11/04/2017 at approximately 3:00 pm i returned to my car (in parking lot) after work to go home. i started car and "power steering" appeared on display. i could only turn my steering wheel but 1/2 an inch. i panicked and called to have my car towed to closest auto part store to my house. it was there that i found out that my car does not take fluid; but is electrical? an associate of auto part store looked up how to replace it; if they could even do so and then found that similar problems were reported of total lock-up of wheel (problems with power steering). a website was recommended to look up vin # to see if power steering was recalled. of course local chevy dealers are not available on weekends, so i must wait until monday (nov. 6th 2017). i have orientation on this day (early in the morning) and cannot take my car in. i do hope my wheel does not freeze up on the freeway! i must note that when i started car up again from auto store that it did not display the words "power steering" and it drove the same except for the fact that it hiccuped a bit before starting. i am afraid to drive anywhere now for fear of the steering freezing up.

Go to shut the ignition off in the vehicle stays running for 30 to 60 seconds check engine light stays on even with the key off this is after the ignition switch has been replaced at the dealership
Im driving and all the gauges go wacko swinging back and forth, anti theft light comes on check engine light abs light low fuel light traction light. it reads service traction power steering low fuel every light you can think of comes on and the car even jerks when changing into gear. at times the steering even has locked up on me, thank god at those times i was on a residential street and not freeway. at times it wont even start all the lights are just going basurk. then theres days where its normal like it never even happened. im afraid its going to lock up on me on the freeway and im going to have a serious accident!! the 2 recalls that my vechicle had have already been replaced but there is still issues!! this car needs to be completely recalled, i researched the issue im having and found out many many other people are having the same issue. some people have even died!!! others major accidents, what more has to happen for this vehicle to be recalled? how many more people have to loose their lives?? this is a serious issue that needs to be taken care of asap!!! and when this issue occurs with the lights and gauges going crazy it happens as im driving. i pray nothing happens to my 3 yr old daughter and i. this issue has been happening for about an year now off and on.
Electric power steering my vehicle was first affected by loss of power steering when i was attempting to make a left turn from my driveway. i wasn't expecting i would have a hard time and take too long to turn the wheel and i almost got hit by oncoming traffic. it was like that for awhile and then my steering went back to normal. i took my car to my mechanic and was informed that the power steering module and motor will need replaced. they told me to go to a chevrolet dealer to get a power steering recall replacement done. the chevrolet dealer informed me that the recall replacement had already been done in 2010. my mechanic and my own research has led me to believe that these parts should be good for the life of the car or at least not be needing replaced again so soon. there have been approximately 46,000 miles put on this car since the recall was done and this just seems ridiculous to me that it would need replaced again. and i have heard from other cobalt owners that they have had this same problem. this is an expensive repair and poses a risk of injury if it is not fixed. if other people are having this problem i think it needs to be investigated.
My son bought a used 2007 chevy colbalt and the power steering goes out some time while he is driving, mostly in reverse for example: reversing out of that parking space or driveway. the wheel can be very hard to turn. i saw that there was a recall on it maybe two years ago, but i don't see a current recall for the steering. this has been happening every now and then since we bought the car two months ago. it just happened again 3-19-17. this car is not driven often right now until he gets his permanent license.
The power steering light came on when i was driving my vehicle on the highway. the speedometer stoped working, my car wouldn't shift past first gear. my door locks started locking and unlocking uncontrollably by themselves. my steering wheel was harder to turn. i immediately got off the highway and chose a safer route to return home. i have a 1 year old daughter who is always with my wherever i go. i've researched and found the same issues with the same make year and model car.
