Recently my 2007 cobalt that i have only had for about a year started twitching out on the dashboard. i started the car to find the gauges fluttering, the security system light came on, it flashed power steering and low fuel ( car has full tank) as well as check engine. i pulled it into to drive where it clunked hard and there was a clicking sound coming from the shifter as well as the power steering was out. i disconnected the battery cables and it reset the computer with no problems thus far. the car has been ok for the last day and a half until today when very quickly the power steering light flashed and went off.the driver side speaker stopped working but flashes on randomly as well as the radio buttons don't work from time to time. i noticed a lot of recalls and similar problems with other peoples vehicles. i would like to know what is causing this electrical issues and have them fixed, i feel my safety is at risk, especially if the power steering shuts off again, this time while i am driving.

While braking, the vehicle's security system warning light lit up, tachometer dropped to zero, and power steering warning briefly flashed. restarting the car turned off the warning light and car drove fine. two weeks later the incident happened again while driving on the highway; again restarting the car solved the issue. the power steering recall was performed on the vehicle a week after the second incident. a month later, the incident occurred again, while braking. several minutes later the gauges started going up and down and the information display shut off. restarting the car did not clear the warning, and car jerked with changes in tachometer. restarting the car a few hours later cleared the warning. car was brought to a mechanic the next morning, and the incident could not be duplicated nor did the computer read an error occurring. the error recurred moments after leaving, and was brought back to mechanic who stated the front lights were also turning on and off. restarting the car several times cleared the warning, but information display no longer turns on properly. the most recent failure mileage was 75,500 miles. *js

Vehicle was recalled around 2010 for steering and fixed. since then numerous electrical failures, power brakes, and steering failures have happened. vehicle has been in dealer and numerous other shops over the years for same problems. chevy dealer (kerry chevrolet in alexandria kentucky), where car was bought kept saying they did not know what was wrong. even after hundreds of dollars spent to fix, problems eventually came back ( electrical failure, gauges fluttering, radio flashing, steering lock, power brake failure). this past weekend, gauges started fluttering, steering locked up while driving and car went into a spin running off the road. chevrolet dealer has always passed all these things off as not their problem. i would like any info on what can be done about this. we are now afraid to have vehicle fixed again and drive it fearing steering may lock while driving at a faster speed. at least this power failure happened at a low speed and no one in the other lane during spin. next time might not be so lucky. please give us any info on what can be done. thank you. *tr

My 2007 cobalt was recalled in 2009 for the steering column motor. i took it in to have the recall fixed. well today it was making the same sound as it was in 2009 and i was told that i would have to pay out of pocket to replace the exact same part that was replaced in 2009. i know i am not the only one to have to have this done. i really think that general motors needs to further investigate on this issue. i was given an estimate of 950.00 to repair. why should i have to pay to have shoddy workmanship replaced. *tr

I would be driving down the highway and the car's dials would not work then start bouncing around. then the power steering message would read out, i would loose power steering. if i slowed down it would take more of an effort to get the car up to speed and the car would jump in to gears hard. it wouldn't shift smooth. none of the gauges would work, and if the a/c was on it wouldn't work. when it started back working, the engine lock light would stay on. and the car wouldn't shift in and out of gear with out jerking. *tr

I was driving down the highway at around 65 mph and all of a sudden the car just kind of had a mind of its own and started spinning out doing donuts across three lanes. i hit a jeep and crashed into a concrete barrier. it was a miracle we weren't killed and the car is demolished, and if it hadn't been for the concrete barrier only god knows where we would have went. the steering just seemed to go out of control. i believe this is an extremely serious safety issue. *tr

Tl* the contact owns 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle independently steered to the left and caused the contact to lose control of the vehicle. the vehicle then spun in a circle and crashed into another vehicle, and then into the retaining wall. there were 3 people with minor injuries. a police report was filed of the incident. the vehicle was destroyed and towed to a salvage yard. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number 10v073000 (steering) but did not confirm if the vehicle was included in the recall campaign. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000. updated 07/03/14 ma. updated 07/08/2014 *js *tr

4/22/13 approx 7:30 am, approached red-light, gently applying brakes. car started to lose power! dashboard lights dimmed while i was slowing down. this has been happening for over a yr. as soon as light turned green, car felt like it was losing power and was going to stall out! (like if you were to run out of gas. stepped on the gas, as soon as i saw the light turn green, to try to prevent the stall out, and about 1/4 into intersection, another car was running a caution light, which turned to red... my car regained power with a thrust of the engine, which took me into the path of the other vehicle who hit me at about 35 mph, which caused us to spin completely around in the middle of intersection. airbags did not deploy. the police report stated i failed to yield the right of way. in part that is true, as i felt i had to apply the gas to the car to keep it from "stalling! heavy damage to driver's side, front end, hood, bumper and support beam by engine. there are many recalls on this car. 5/9/2012, fuel odor or spotting on ground; 9/16/10-loss of power steering assist; 3/1/2010-recall 10v073000 power steering motor replacement; 1022/2009-fuel pump module replacement. in the pass three yrs i advised east syracuse chevy dealer that my dashboard lights, lighted areas radio, etc; go in and out like the car has an electrical problem, door left-open, lights, low-fuel, single lights chimes all don't work. dealer advised me there is a short in the dash somewhere causing all these problems, radio speakers are all connected i would have to pay to repair which was over $2,000. remotes don't work. i have had many front end problems with this vehicle, i.e. sway bar, steering column bushings; struts;steering components, linkage/cv drive axle boots, control arms; repairs;11/30/11, 2/16/2011. *tr

When turning left or right it makes a clunking noise from the steering column. *tr

Driving west approx. 35 mph lady pulled in front of across 4 lanes traffic hit broadside on her passenger side. little damage to her car. over $6000. damage to my car. no air bag deployed. driver of my car hurt wrist and hit knees on dash. ended up 8 months later having knee surgery because of tear in knee from wreck. passenger hurt wrists. *tr

Driving my 2007 cobalt i noticed after turning a street corner the power steering stops working and i had to physically pull back the steering wheel with effort, this now happens every time i try to straighten out after turning a corner at slow speed, i have an appointment with a gm dealer on april 1, 2013. *tr

In my words and experience that happened on the day of 03/13/2013, appx 4:30 pm on my way home from work, like any other day over crowded traffic hour , stop and go, i started to experience loss of power in my vehicle. twice it started loosing power then the vehicle veered towards oncoming traffic i steered to the right and vehicle would not steer back into normal position causing me to go over a dirt embankment and off a cliff, at that point i do not think the engine was running, i literally thought this was the end of my life, going through trees ,hitting rocks. there was nothing i could do but to wait to die. then the vehicle hit something real hard causing the vehicle to roll over and come to a stop. i just remember wanting to get out of the car as fast as i could. i had to crawl out of the passenger side to get out. i didn't see anyone i couldn't see the roadway i was so far down. i heard people yelling if i was ok. i then remembered i needed my purse and my phone to get help so i crawled back into the car i found my purse but no phone or keys until the vehicle was recovered by chp recovery. at the time i didn't feel i needed medical attention, but since the accident my back and my balance are not the same as they use to. i've also been having difficulties with my memory. *tr

Pulling out of parking space turning felt steering was hard and not straightening out, turning right or left is very stiff. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that there was a clicking noise heard from the vehicle intermittently. additionally, the contact had to apply force to turn the steering wheel on multiple occasions. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 10v073000 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

I own a 2007 chevy cobalt. in 2013 my car went crazy. power steering stopped working and all the electric components were all over the place. rpm's were going up and down, full tank of gas said it was empty, gear shifter was clicking, and the car was jerking like it wanted to stall. i called chevy and they told me there were 2 recalls, during the same time my garage smelled strong like gas. i had the problem fixed twice. now in december 2016 the car is going haywire again.power steering goes out, all electric components start flipping out and the anti theft system light comes on along with every other light on the dash. my 17 year old daughter now drives the car and it is completely unsafe considering she is unable to steer and all the electric components go out. this must be treated as a recall! i've seen thousands of the same complaints. this is extremely unsafe and can easily cause an accident. gm needs to take responsibility for this! does someone have to die before a recall fixes the problem? i paid cash for my car and bought it in 2007 with 12 miles on it. this is unacceptable and there needs to be a lawsuit against gm!

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving 45 mph, she depressed the brake pedal and the steering wheel independently turned to the left, causing the vehicle to crash into a brick wall. the air bags deployed however, the contact was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries to her left foot, ankle wrist and pains to her chest. the contact had to be cut out of the vehicle, which was destroyed. a police report was filed of the incident. the cause of failure was unknown. the manufacturer was notified but provided no assistance. the failure mileage was 70,000. *tr

Edited partial news entry from the deadly accident: south idaho crash kills two, including nampa woman; ipt (idaho press-tribune) newsroom; gooding county--a nampa woman died after a car accident in gooding county friday (12-21-12), according to idaho state police. a burley man also died in the two-vehicle crash, which took place around 6:45 p.m. on interstate 84 about 35 miles outside mountain home. three others from burley were injured. young woman, 22, of nampa, was driving west on the interstate in a chevrolet cobalt. authorities aren't sure why she lost control of the vehicle. she drove into the median and overturned. her vehicle continued into the eastbound lanes of travel, colliding with a nissan maxima driven by 23- year-old young man of burley. young man died at the scene of the crash. young woman was transported by air ambulance to a boise hospital, where she later died. three passengers related to young man, all of burley...were taken by air ambulance to a boise hospital. all drivers and passengers were wearing seatbelts. The car is hard to steer sometimes. steering wheel shakes and rattles. seems to be coming from the steering column or electrical steering assist. *tr

I was on the lodge freeway, highway 10, heading east when i loss control by 7 me rd, skinned out, hit the wall on the rear left fender and bumper.

On november 10, 2010, i was on my way to work. it was about 10:00am if i remember correctly. i could not even make it out of my subdivision before my cobalt began to give out on me. i made a right turn at a stop sign, and my car suddenly started to "roll" i would say, because i was not able to steer or press the brakes. basically the car had cut off without me knowing. i definitely didn't expect it to happen since it was on a full tank of gas. but anyways as it was rolling it was pulling towards the right since that's how my steering wheel was already turned from me making a right at a stop sign. i could not get the car to stop and i was rolling down the hill drifting off into peoples yards. the car rolled into a brick mailbox. it hit pretty hard. the brick mailbox came completely out of the ground and luckily fell in the opposite direction. i slung forward one the car hit the mailbox. i blacked out for a few seconds, and then immediately went into a panic attack which caused me to go into an asthma attack. i have asthma pretty bad. the air bad did not deploy. the front end of the car was all smashed in and all the fuels had leaked out. because i slung forward i had whiplash, and also a knot on my head and a swollen busted lip. i was wearing my seat belt. i was out of work for a while due to the pack neck and head injuries. the police was called and a police report was filed. and of course the car was totaled out, which also left me with no transportation. *tr

Battery died in car, had to jump the car. car started fine, steering seemed to be a little tight. after a few minutes of driving the tightness in the steering went away. however upon arriving at home the key would not come out of the ignition, and the shifter would shift into any gear easily without having to press in the shifter button. also in attempts to remove the key the steering wheel is now locked all the way to the right with the wheels locked in the right position. was able to remove key from ignition by locating the emergency key release switch under the steering column but car will not start now as key wont turn all the way, and shifter still shifts into any gear without having to press the shifter button. car was parked front first against building so i have no idea how i will get it towed out of there to a shop to fix it! i suspect the shifter cable assembly at the end of the shifter which is made out of plastic is broken. will verify when its taken apart. i have seen at least 50 other cases on the internet where this piece breaks and causes the car not to register it being in park and will not release key from ignition. gm recalled certain years for shifter problems but not the 2007 unfortunately! *tr

Power steering went out when i was turning around in my drive way.. causing me to hit and damage my garage door..causing 2,000. in damage. this car has already had the power steering recall work done..but the power steering is still going in and out...major problem..very dangerous! *tr

2007 chevrolet cobalt. consumer states problem with vehicle electric power steering *tgw the consumer stated the power steering failed while driving in rush hour traffic. the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, where they kept it for two days. the consumer continued to experience steering problems after the vehicle was returned to her. the consumer received a recall letter in the mail regarding the electric steering. when she went to the dealer with the recall letter, she was informed it really wasn't a recall. nevertheless, they worked on the vehicle. she was then informed there was a problem with the airbag. she stated there steering is still an issue, where it would become stiff and difficult to turn. *jb

I am in atlanta, georgia where the weather is 104'. i began to drive on the highway and parked my car in a garage where i began to smell gas. then as the days went on i smelled the gas stronger and fumes. i was riding my little 1 year old cousin around when i noticed a gas leak from the car. he then began to cough and i immediately switched vehicles for his safety. i was told that the cobalts had a recall on fuel systems but mine was not covered. i did have a power wheel steering recall which i did not understand why i didn't have a fuel system recall. i would think they messed up both at the same time. i need this fixed as soon as possible because the heat is rising outside and the gas is actually spilling from the tank. this is a dangerous issue which i shouldn't have to fix if the manufacturer created so many. *tr

Started down the road and lost control of the car the power steering light came on and there was a lot of play in the wheel. i then attempted to get it back home where it was very hard to turn and the dash computer was all haywire not showing correct data. this supposedly had been fixed under a recall just 5 months prior to me purchasing. *js

The steering wheel completely died on me in a middle of a highway exit. a message came on saying power steering. it was incredibly hard to turn either way. i had about 5 miles to home and drove the car in that condition. i did not know what was going on. in april of 2010 i had received a letter from gm about a recall; however, that letter informed me not to act and worry until i received a second letter from them, which i never received. i had almost forgotten about the issue until last night!!! *tr

The ignition switch wouldn't turn when i inserted the key, the key got stuck. i had to play with it for it to finally turn. i took it to a car locksmith and had another key made for the car which cost me $100.00. yesterday, october 8, 2013 i begin to encounter the same problem all over again. the key gets stuck in the ignition switch and the ignition switch does not turn. i have to jiggle and play with it for the key to finally turn and the car turn on. i have read that numerous people have posted very similar complaints with the chevrolet cobalts. it appears that this may clearly qualify as a recall issue. i should not have to go through this time and time again. *tr

On march 4, 2011 i had my 2007 cobalt's electrical power steering fixed due to the recall i received in the mail. this was as emich chevorlet in colorado. recently i have been having issues making turns at slower speeds and sometime unable to turn at all. i contacted my personal shop and was told the dealer needed to do the work and the recall should have fixed this defunct part. i contacted the dealer today who straight away told me it was not their problem. if you scour the internet numerous people are still posting that even after the recall these parts (steering) are still failing and causing accidents. i should not have top pay for a part that cannot last a year and 3 days. *tr

As i turned the corner the steering wheel stuck and i was unable to turn back and i hit a parked car which caused $800 in damage to their car and $5400 in damage to my car and also caused my insurance to go up. when i had asked the people who fixed my car if they checked the power steering like i asked they said they did not. *tr
