I was driving to work, after having the used car for 3 months, when i noticed my steering wheel shaking while i was driving at 60mph. the faster i go,the louder this problem gets. i just purchased 4 new tires in june 2013,had them mounted, balanced and aligned and i still have this shaking problem. when i had a previous problem (with my fuel pump leaking) i noticed many other similar complaints about this shaking (around may 2013) online. i took a trip to michigan for a funeral and had to go back roads instead of interstate due to this severe shaking. have there been any other complaints sent in? will this become a recall issue as well? please advice. *tr

We bought this car on jan 21 of 2011 used at john howard in morgantown wv and 3 months later the power steering light comes on and beeps and there is no power steering. this has happened 3 to 4 times since. i contacted john howard but they don't want to take care of it unless i pay for it. there was a recall on this part they are saying failed (or failing) and when i contacted the chevy dealer they say they are no longer responsible for it because 19000s mile ago it was replaced and once the recall was done then it is our problem. after talking to them longer they suggested i go to a gm dealer have it tested on my expense and if its the same thing that the recall was then they would talk about replacing it on their charge. after going to harry green in clarksburg they tell me i am responsible for whole thing that the part is out of warranty, something gm did not tell me. my thing is if they are having this much trouble with the power steering on this car, which they are, i should be no where responsible for their mistake they made over and over again. instead i pay over $8000 for a car i expect to last longer than 3 months without pumping money into it last and i have to refix a recall that didn't work to begin with. some where some how someone should be responsible and i don't feel that it should be me. *tr

I went outside and started my car. as i attempted to drive off, the car would not steer. i learned that there had been a recall on my power steering. the cobalt has electric power steering, and can only be fixed at the dealership. the problem was fixed on 4/16/2012. on 2/26/2014, i went outside to start my car. again, as i attempted to pull off, the car would not steer. after taking it to the dealership, i learned that the entire steering column had gone out. gm knows this car is defective, and refuses to do anything about the problem. my car has been in the shop for 2 weeks, and i am getting the run around. i have had numerous problems out of this car. i've had trouble with the ignition switch, fuel problems, rattling noises, shaking, the windows going out, and the steering system. something needs to be done. gm needs to be held accountable. i make regular repairs and have routine maintenance done on my car. i should not have to continue to suffer with these issues that gm know exists. there response is always "due to the mileage and year of your car, we can't offer you any assistance." *tr

This vehicle is not safe to drive and was not built right. the manufactures knew for many years that the chevy cobalt 2006 would have a leaking gasoline system, and they kept this faulty defect to themselves for many years before bring this issue to the customer. i was driving the vehicle leaking gas for a few years unit the crack was large enough for me to smell it, while not driving, the ignition switch; with the key in it while the car was in park has started the car engine without turning the key. the key wont come out of the ignition switch. the car has turned off on me on the freeway more than 9 times. the car turned off on me going in reverse, couldn't control the brake and steering power to move out of the pole . while driving in the freeway i have had to quickly react; putting my emergency lights on and praying to god a car doesn't hit me, while with the left had side is quickly waving at the vehicles coming from behind to stop. please help me. i have two children and im tired of being exposed to the dangers of this m defected life threatening vehicle. I purchased a brand new 2006 chevy cobalt and haven't had problems until recently (2012). my problem started in february 2012 when heading to a doctor's appointment. started the car and the power steering light came on. started pulling car off of parking lot where i live and the car had a jerking/bucking sensation to it and then shut off on me. had car towed to chevy dealer and the car wouldn't duplicate the same problem so i got the car back. 9 days later i go out again and the car starts with the same problem - power steering light on; jerking sensation and the speedometer dropped from 35 mph to 0. car went back to chevy dealership. again, car would not duplicate problems. got car back & since i have been scared to death to have this vehicle on the road, it has sat for 2 months. after getting gm involved, tried to take vehicle back to dealer and once again - power steering light on; jerking/bucking sensation; clicking in gear console. 3 times now i have had this car back to dealership and now they decide it's the body control module (bcm), yet they indicated that on my first trip, that a stored code showed them the bcm was not communicating. getting gm involved has been a waste of time because naturally since the warrant is off of the car, they don't want to do anything to soak up the cost of replacing this module which is going to cost me $685.00. *tr

I had received a recall in the mail for my car back in 2010 for power steering. i took it to the dealer and they fixed the problem. so i thought. a couple of times after that i had been driving and the car would completely shut off and lock up but be fine when i turned it back on. then a few days ago i was driving to work when my check engine light came on then my steering wheel locked up and it was hard to turn the wheel i came very close to wrecking. i took it back to the dealer and they told me i need a new steering rack. i had been researching this problem online and there is an awful crazy amount of complaints of the same prob. one lady even said how her daughter had wrecked over this problem. lots of other complained of getting the problem fixed time and time again and it just keeps happening. this is a major problem that someone is going to be killed over and needs to be addressed. i asked my dealer shouldn't that be fixed for recall since it has to also do with my power steering and he replies with we replaced it back in 2010. but the problem is that replacing the power steering once doesn't stop the problem from happening again! im 2 1/2 months pregnant and this scares me to be driving this car that has this problem that can happen at anytime. please help me get to the bottom of this issue before someone dies over it. thank you! *tr

Stopped at the stop sign to make a left hand turn when i started off the car would not straighten up so it sent me into a ditch and field. *tr

My wife and grandson were in the car when power steering came on the dash. it caught her attention but didn't know really what had happened till she tried to turn and almost went in the ditch. we took it to the dealer and 700.00 paid to have the problem continue to recur. it comes and goes and if it is not a problem when we take it to the dealer they don't know what to do. all they say is it is in the wiring issue and think we should buy something else. i didn't know about all these problems till it occurred to us. we bought the car new and have like the 2006 cobalt but this is the first i have heard they have a problem with the powersteering or wiring to the electric assist to the power steering. i am told they had a fix back in 2010 are we still qualified to have our car fixed under that recall. my son is going in the army in a couple weeks we wanted to let him have this car after he gets stationed somewhere but we can't give it to him when we are not trusting its safety. *tr

The power steering in my '06 chevy cobalt suddenly died, and continues to die every time i turn on the car. the car was working perfectly fine beforehand. this is a recent problem for me but after a few minutes of research i see that many, many people are having a similar issue with their '05-'07 cobalts. *tr

I was driving home one rainy day, about 45mph, dash lit up to shift. i looked and i was already in 5th. next second everything on dash went out. no speedometer, no shift light, no mileage or trip meter, nothing. only thing on dash that works is tach and digital display says power steering. already had an appointment for recall work for power steering assist motor, thought that maybe that was what was wrong so i kept appointment. when got back from dealer, they tell me they replaced power steering assist motor and they had noticed the dash display and had done scan and it showed the power steering motor is went out! bought this car for my daughter, to drive back in forth to school, scared for her to drive it the 90 miles a day she drives to college. thought this was just an isolated case but after checking online, i see that this is a major defect in these cars. something needs done before someone gets hurt or killed. *tr

About 3 years ago i started to get a thumping noise in the front end of the 2006 cobalt. i asked a mechanic what it could be and they gave me a couple things it might be also gave me idea on cost. being a single mom of two and the thumping was not to bad i did not have the money to repair. as time went on got louder and worse. so, i brought it in to have problem fixed it was the lower tie arms and something else went bad and cost me almost $1000 to fix. i looked online and found many 2006 cobalt owners say they have the same issue but was told by gm was not a safety issue so they were not recalling car it was our problem. i have noticed the lights on the dash sometime dim so low you can not see them then they will brighten again even after replacing the battery. over this winter i started to get a humming in the steering column and asked my mechanic to look he told me i have electric power steering they could not fix. i got the recall about the ignition switch and was doing as they said and only driving with key and nothing else. but now every time i stopped i was checking key to make sure it was in place and a few times it had moved slightly but did not kick it out of the on position. if i had not checked it, it probably would have with all the pot holes. then on april 6th 2014 on my way home from work (which is 24 miles away from home). when i was turning to go on the highway the steering wheel was humming again(i had no clue that there was any problems with steering columns at this point) i got onto the highway and the dash light came on and a dinging sound started and i had to fight, the car to the side of the road. i turned the car off then turned it on to see if it stopped and was able to get home. looked online to see if others where having this issue and found tons of 2006 cobalt owners having issue. that is when i saw they are recalling 2010's for it not 2006.

I just bought a 2006 chevy cobalt 2.2l. two weeks ago i had to take it into a dealer for power steering issues. there is a recall open on it so they replaced the power steering motor. now, just two weeks after fixing it, i turn my car on and there's no power steering again. i have already had it in once to fix this and it's still causing me problems. i work two jobs and don't have the money to be fixing this car repeatedly. i traded in a 1997 skylark for this 2006 cobalt wanting a newer, less to repair car. i ended up with a piece of junk that i'm still 2 yrs away from paying off. *tr

I had steering motor replaced in 11/2010 after receiving recall notice. a few days ago i got into my car and the steering wheel was locked and the car would not start. i tried again and it started, but the car would jerk slightly when the car changed gears. slowed to a stop and the steering wheel completely locked and i could not move it. turned car off then back on a moment later. continued to drive aprox. 20 miles, then when slowed to turn into a parking spot, the car completely shut down on me, steering wheel locked. took the car into the dealership that did the recall---they cannot locate the problem or give me any answers on how to actually repair car. won't acknowledge there is any problem with the steering motor that was replaced and insist it is a different issue, and thus, not their responsibility to repair free of charge. i have asked dealership to contact gm's tech support and they are reluctant to do anything for me thus far. *tr
