We have classified the 1199 complaints from 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt about STEERING into the following categories.
All of my electrical components go crazy including the gauges, radio, headlights, power breaks/ steering. the car also stalls upon stopping and in traffic(usually going over 40mph). it has stalled several times in traffic causing other cars to swerve or slam on their brakes. im shocked i haven't been hit yet. then the car will also overaccelarate. on one occasion i barely touched the gas to pull away from a stop sign and the car accelerated very quickly through the intersection and into the park across the street. after all this happens the battery will die and the key will get stuck in the ignition. the same basic cycle occurs every few months. i have had it to the dealership four times this week alone and each time it acts up again within hours. they do not seem to have any idea how to fix it either. *tr

I own a 2006 chevrolet cobalt ss and my wife was driving on a 100' high freeway and someone cut her off while they were merging into her lane she tried to swerve out of the way and she told me that when she tried to turn the wheel it was very hard to do so and then got extremely loose and caused her to over correct and then she hit the side concrete guard rail and then rolled and landed with the hovering about a 100' from her death. she was under the speed limit, wearing a seatbelt, air bags deployed and the police officer's were amazed that she didn't go over the edge. i have photos to provide. *tr

I was driving down a dirt road traveling between 15 and 20 mph. i had made it safely up the road and down the road till i started to turn a corner. it was a blind corner and as i started to turn i noticed the steering was really tough to control. i had lost power steering, the change was so sudden and it caused the steering wheel to jerk that i lost control of the car and slide across the road and into a very deep ditch. the angle i impacted caused damage to my front driver side bumper, fender, driver side front and rear door panels and rear bumper. it also cracked my bumper in two places and broke part of the driver side splash guard loose. there looked to be damage to the driver side headlight as well. i have contacted the dealership where i bought the car and they have order a replacement motor for the car and referred me to the gm customer service to find out whether the other repairs that need to be done will be taken care of by gm. on a side note i received a letter from gm issuing the recall and stating that i will be sent a letter when parts become available. *tr

Electric power steering went out today on my 2006 chevrolet cobalt. it was working fine this morning, and i got off of work, went to start my car, once i started moving, i noticed that my power steering didn't work anymore. does gm have a recall for this yet? i am not paying money to fix this problem, it is a manufacturer defect and they need to recall it so i can get it fixed.
I have had a problem with my 06 cobalt back in early 07 it was under warranty at the 7 times i took it to the dealer for steering concerns. the dealership could not duplicate the hard steering problem or produce computer problem. i was very adamant about this and also got new tires thinking that was the problem. it was not ! i was not aware of any serious problem with the power steering, and was leary to drive my car (a gift from my mom) but had nothing else to drive. in march of this year on the 30th i was coming from a friends home and was on a side road i slowed to make a right turn and i could not get the car to go right, it was very hard to turn, and i went through the light and hit a tree head on and the air bag did not deploy. i was told later i missed the sensor. the car was totaled and g.m. won't do anything about this. i was told that even though the car sat for 2 months with a dead battery the computer does not loose data. (g.m.) i know of several cobalt owners who have had the power assist replaced on more than one occasion and it still went out. the mechanics (a.s.e.)certified informed me it is not the power assist it is in the steering column, and should be replaced, but g.m. won't do that it would cost too much money. it is nice to know that g.m. would rather sacrifice the consumer rather than take care of them. i also understand the computer has a history of not recording properly when there is a problem. the rest of us who have had a crash with and without air bags need some kind of solution. g.m. is sweeping this under the rug!!!! thank you for your time. updated portable 06/22/11

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). i was driving home this evening from work when i got the "power steering" warning on my dash. soon after, i noticed my car would buck and jerk quite violently. it got to the point that i did not feel safe driving on the interstate so i pulled over. i called my local dealership, george weber, remembering there was a recall on 2006 chevy cobalts, to my dismay, my car was not included in this so called recall that was announced in march. however, the service department employee, marsha, did acknowledge that the symptoms i had experienced coincided with the symptoms of two vehicles that were fixed at her shop. the only difference was those two vehicles were under the recall, but my car is not. it is imperative that this recall extend to all cobalts that stand a chance of having the same issues. i was very scared for my safety and the other on the road as i felt i had no control over my vehicle. the scariest feeling is that it came out of no where. I own a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. well to begin, i initially had an issue with my shift column, which i researched and found out it was a common issue with this vehicle. it would cause my key to get stuck in the ignition. i took it to the delearship and they replace the whole column. then a a couple of week later, my vehicle was accelerating really fun, i just blew it off for a moment, until i then tried to put my car in reverse one day, and it would not go anywhere. i took it to the delearship and they told me my transmission is slipping, at 86,000 miles. the dealearship has my car, and is trying to figure out if it's even worth fixing. im also wondering if this problem could have been caught the intial time they fixed the vehicle, and figured it was my shifting column, because even with my transmission slipping, it also affected the shifting column. one other problem i have had with the vehicle is the air bag sensor, i have not got this fixed yet, because the dealearship wants to charge $99 just to see exactly what's causing my airbag sensor to not come on, when i have passengers with me.
My 2006 chevrolet colbalt's power steering stopped working, causing loss of control
The power steering goes out at random times. i get a warning signal on the instrument panel, and the steer becomes very difficult. if i stop the car and shut it off, the steering is restored for awhile. this happened to me on the highway, at highway speed. this is very concerning.

I have a 2006 chevy cobalt ltz. about 3 months ago, i was driving and "power steering" appeared on my dashboard along with a chime noise and a few other warning signs. i took it to a shop and they found nothing wrong with it. just this past tuesday 3/16/10 it did the same thing so i pulled over, turned it off and let it sit. after about an hour i drove home and it was fine. then today 3/20/10 it happened again as i was driving so i pulled over and turned it off for 10 minutes, started again, and the warning lights were still there. i turned it off and on a few more times but the problem was still present. i continued to drive then, and the whole time the power steering warning came on and off along with the chime. the traction control and engine lights stayed on also. a few hours later, i started my car and the engine light stayed on the whole time until i got to my house. *tr

The electronic power steering when out on my car several times almost getting me and my friend in to a accident. i was able to get my car home safely but had to drive with extreme caution. turning was more then difficult. the power steering would come back when i turned the car back on but shortly after would turn off again. i tried to fix it but it was to no avail it just kept turning off. this of cores makes it to where i cant even get to work safely with out worrying about my steering going completely out. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. while driving at 35 mph, the power steering warning light illuminated on the warning panel followed by a warning chime. the steering wheel then became hard and incredibly difficult to steer. the dealer advised there was an upcoming recall campaign for the failure and that he would be notified accordingly (nhtsa campaign id number: 10v073000: steering: electric power assist system).there were no repairs performed on the vehicle. the failure and current mileages were 63,000. updated 04/20/10. *lj the consumer stated the steering did not change during the incident and there was no noticeable difference in the way the vehicle performed. on march 21st, the warning chimed sounded, the power steering display lit up and the vehicle began to act erratic, but the steering remained normal as the vehicle jerked violently several times. the vehicle was towed to the dealer. they were unable to find a cause, but did reset the computer and erased some codes. the vehicle performed fine until april 3rd when it again the warning chime sounded. the consumer returned to the dealer and they replaced the power steering motor as per recall. updated 09/22/10.*jb
My 2006 chevy cobalt's power steering is not working. a few days ago the steering felt as if it were sticking. going into a turn there would be no power steering and i would have to really torque the wheel, then, in the same turn it would suddenly come back on causing me to oversteer and swerve. now it usually isn't working but occasionally does. *tr
Driving on a residential road in a 35 - 25 mph zone. proceeded to brake into a turn traveling at approximately 15-20mph and came upon a stopped truck in my lane. the driver of the truck was loading a ladder into his vehicle. i applied my brake and proceed to enter the other lane to avoid the truck. as a entered the other lane my power steering light came on and i had difficulty controlling the car and keeping it in the opposite lane of traffic going straight. at this point i am going about 3-5 mph and i am trying to force the wheel to the right. i was unable to keep the car in the opposite lane of traffic and i proceeded to hit the embankment on the left hand side of the road traveling at a very low speed. felt like a slow motion crash. my vehicle struck the embankment on the left hand side causing minor damage to the exterior of the vehicle. the impact was such that my radiator to the car was bent and needed to be replaced. after my vehicle came to a stop the check engine light and the power steering light remained illuminated. i was able to reverse the vehicle and drive it to a safe location on the side of the road and call police. i have not seen either of these lights since the accident and my car was fixed. *tr
The power steering just started turning off. sometimes when i am making sharp turns, other times it just shuts off at random. i would say it happens every other day that i am driving. it makes it a safety hazard because it is almost impossible to make quick or sharp turns, and is just overall hard to drive. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. while the contact was driving 60mph she noticed that the power steering light had appeared on the dashboard, moments later the vehicle no longer had any power steering. the vehicle has been taken to the dealership on several different occasions where the contact was informed that the failure could not be reproduced or serviced. there were no prior warnings and the current and failure mileages were 33000.
I'm driving the car and randomly the power steering flashes on the screen and my power steering stops working. turn the car off and back on and the issue goes away. *tr
