On five separate occasions my 2006 toyota corolla experienced sudden acceleration. vehicle each time was at very low speed, approximately 5 mph, going from park to drive or park to reverse, with light pressure applied to brakes. engine began to race and accelerate, braking harder had no effect, and vehicle stopped only when shifted to park. instances occurred while parallel parking or coming out of a driveway onto a busy street. accelerator was not stuck in down position, but engine roared and raced on its own power. i had no control of vehicle during the four or five seconds it took me to shift into park. vehicle was taken to dealer on november 17, 2017 after first three incidents, with service department finding no problem. vehicle was brought to dealer again on february 14, 2018, after two more incidents of sudden acceleration. service department could not replicate the problem and said they could find nothing wrong with the car. they suggested user error, my confusing the accelerator pedal with the brake pedal. it was not user error and not floor mats stuck under gas pedal. it happened five times and the vehicle is not safe to drive.
Takata recall - my airbag light while driving also will come on when i first start the car. it started on several days turned off for a few days and came on again. this happens over & over.
Car accelerates by itself drastically making me almost hit a tree. this is the second time i make this complain to toyota. they told me the first time a couple of years ago there was nothing wrong with the car. the acceleration happens not in a regular basis but sporadic. this time it happens when i was going very slow and there were children playing close to my home. i was very slow no more 3 to 5 miles and hour. i had to hit the breaks very hard to stop since as i was turning into the driveway the car accelerated on its own.
Manufacturing defect with odometers in toyota 2006. it is the federal law that mandate functional odometer. it appears that digital gauge in some toyota cars was programmed to disconnect odometer at 299999 millage. not only the replacement of odometer cost $600.00 but the new odometer will have to be set at 0 zero millage which is incorrect and fraudulent. toyota odometer for whatever and unknown reason don't go pass 300000 miles. how otherwise the owner should keep a track of millage. toyota doesn't seems to recognize this defect as a reason for recall and/or reimbursement. so far vehicle is in operation with millage stacked at 299999.
The car was in reverse with foot on the brake when it suddenly accelerated out of control. the cause was definitely unintended acceleration and is the second such incident with this car since it was purchased used in december 2015.
I had my brake applied and was stopping on city street and engine started racing and it hit the van ahead. with my foot on the brake i shifted the car into the park position hoping to stop the racing engine, but, it didn't stop. i am seeking possible source of problem as i would like to keep the vehicle it has only been driven 34,000 miles. car has been repaired but i want to be sure i can have it fixed so i don't injure or kill anyone,

I noticed that my steering wheel was very difficult to turn so that "12" would go farther right than "2" or left than "10". i found that even within that "10" to "2" range, the car was not following my steering fast enough to make turns and curves as quickly as it usually does. i had to slow down sharply to stay on the road. ten minutes later, i had to come to a complete stop in the road in order to direct the wheels into my driveway. during all of this, it seemed that both acceleration and brakes were less responsive than usual. preceding the entire event, the engine had made some clacking/clanging/banging noises and the heat began to blow only cold air. *tr

I was pulling into a parking spot at work (california state university east bay in hayward ca) at approximately 5 mph. i applied the brake pedal to stop the vehicle, but instead of stopping, it went over the curb, crossed the walkway, broke through and knocked over a large bush, rolled down an incline for 3-4 yards, and stopped when it struck a tree. i believe the incident appears similar to the current investigation under nhtsa action number dp14003. *tr
The date and mileage i list are approximate. at first we thought this was an issue related to brakes not releasing, now we see it is related to a gas pedal/throttle issue. what happens is when taking off the car would fall flat, like brakes sticking. now the problem is worsening, and it is apparent that the engine is not responding, that is, no rpm's building. it is not the behavior of an engine hesitating. it is running fine, just unresponsive. now a few days ago monday may 27, 2015 i had an issue and the car would not climb over 15 mph for about 1/2 mile. no missfire, no signs of anything wrong with the engine running. i had the gas pedal down about 1/2 way for the car to even move. the car was recently at midas. they seen no problem with the brakes. *tr

I was backing up out of a parking space, stopped and put car in drive position, and 2006 toyota corolla accelerated to a high speed, engine roared. i put my foot on brake immediately, shut off engine and pulled emergency brake. lights on dashboard were lit, and i had no power steering. car bolted forward and hit the back of a parked truck which stopped my vehicle. my daughter was in the passenger side and experienced this horrible event. i was bringing her home from an operation on her arm. needless to say, we were both terrified. had car towed to the toyota garage. the service manager said he couldn't touch the car due to protocol, and gave me the 800 # for toyota. that was on a monday and on friday i had to get my own rental car as i had not heard from toyota in regard to a rental car. *tr

I was parking in my tandem parking spot behind my husband's car. i tapped the accelerator and then stepped on the brake to finish parking. when my foot was on the brake, the car continued to accelerate. i pressed harder on the brake but the car continued to accelerate, and stopped when it hit my husband's car. the hood, bumper, grill, and front fenders on my car were damaged. the bumper on his car was cracked. i am certain i was pressing the brake and not the accelerator. i filed a complaint with toyota. they did an edr investigation on my car but could not replicate the problem or find evidence of sua. the person who did the inspection told me he deemed it was safe to drive. toyota takes about 3-4 weeks to close the case from the time of inspection. i was still concerned from background information i had read about sua (that often it cannot be detected or replicated) and did not want to drive the car anymore. i traded in the car and purchased a new car (a honda this time), and was up front with them about the incident. *tr

While pulling into parking space, experienced sudden acceleration, while foot on brake . unable to stop car, it jumped the curb and hit a tree. the tree stopped the car, however the wheels must have kept going, as there was dirt torn up and spewed behind the tires. air bag did not deploy. toyota notified. car towed to dealer. toyota investigation pending, which according to toyota may take up to 2 months. toyota said this 2006 corolla was not on 'recall' list. they also said they will investigate but do not expect to find it to be their fault, as they said they have never found themselves to be 'at fault' when the car was not on the 'recall list'. *tr
While driving my 2006 toyota corolla s (sport) at around 60 mph, the engine lost power without warning and began rapidly decreasing traveling speed to 10-15 miles mph. then, the check engine light came on. i attempted to apply gas to correct the problem, but the car continued declining in speed. after pulling over to the side of the road, i turned the car off, and then restarted the vehicle. the car started and began operation as if nothing had occurred. i had the car checked at an auto parts store, and was instructed to take it to the nearest dealership. i researched the issue online and found a preponderance of complaints with the exact experience to mine from owners of (2005-2007). outraged owners expressed that it was common knowledge among dealers that there was engine computer issue, and a subsequent technical service bulletin was issued without notifying owners of this matter. i relayed this information to the toyota of easley dealership. the service manager gave me a lot of pushback on the matter, said i was 4,000 miles over their free replacement period (8 yrs/80,000 miles). i responded that the mileage wasn't the cause it is commonly known to be defective. finally, after speaking my call to the toyota helpline and his district manager, the parts manager agreed to cut the fee 50% from $724 to $352. at this point, they charged me $85 just to look at the car so i had no other recourse but to pay to have them fix this since the car was beginning to lose engine power in this manner every 10 to 15 miles. upon leaving toyota of easley and returning to my apartment, i called a few other dealerships that i had patronized previously. the response that i received from another dealership was bring the car in immediately. this is a common problem with the 2006 corollas, and even if we can't do this for you for free, toyota should be able to refund you for this matter because its so commonplace. *tr
While driving our 2006 toyota corolla, with aprox. 70,000 miles on it.in a parking lot searching for a parking space, with foot on brake, driver turned to pull into a perpendicular to drive lane parking slot. with foot still on brake, engine suddenly went to full throttle five feet from curb, even with both feet on brake peddle, car would not stop. engine overpowered brakes, car came to a stop after hitting concrete/brick two foot square pole. air bags deployed, hood hit windshield along with air bags breaking windshield into many shards of glass. engine continued to race and front wheels continued to spin until ignition was turned off. there were no personal injuries however the car was a total loss. police were summoned, personal information was taken, no charges were issued. *tr

Unintended acceleration. slowed to a near stop at a red arrow. the car started to creep into the intersection, pushed harder on the brakes and it did not stop the car. the engine rpms increased. shifted into n, went to r for a second then back to n. rpms decreased and then the car appeared ok. look at the floor mat and it did not appear to be out of place. first time was today. no repairs yet. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 toyota corolla. the contact stated that while braking to turn into a parking lot, both the accelerator and brake pedal was depressed simultaneously. the failure would occur because of his foot, a size ten, was fairly large. when the failure occurred, there was an unusual increase in engine rpms and once the vehicle would accelerate, the brakes were unable to stop the vehicle. the contact was concerned that there was not enough space between the accelerator and brake pedals. the failure and current mileages were 40,000. updated 05/13/10. *lj

My wife had a major accident last week in seaville,nj. she was driving a 2006 toyota corolla s. the weather was cold outside but it was not snowing. she had ample of distance and time to stop the vehicle at the traffic light. she hit on the brakes when the light turned yellow. the car still kept on going and did not slow down. she slammed the brakes real hard and the car still kept on going. finally the car stopped when it hit 2 trucks on cross traffic. the driver side air bag deployed. my wife was rushed to the er directly from the accident scene. police was on site. she was hurt pretty bad in her neck, lower back, shoulder foot etc. i would never buy a toyota again. both her and my confidence is lost in toyota. government should be stricter with examining cars. her car was not identified as part of recall. i would ask the government to inform other 2006 toyota owners to be very careful. updated 03/08/10

My toyota corolla has accelerated unexpectedly several times, generally when the temperature is around 32 degrees fahrenheit. the first time i noticed it, i rear-ended a pickup truck after a red light had turned green. the second time, i was backing out of a parking space and the car shot backwards 30' into a post (denting my bumper and breaking the rear drivers' side lights). the third time, nothing was broken - i was the only person on the road - but it scared the bejesus out of me. i called toyota to complain and they said that there is no recall on my car. my belief is that there are accelerator / electronics problems with the toyota corolla that they are not admitting.
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 toyota corolla. the contact stated that the vehicle accelerated without the accelerator pedal being applied while driving at lower speeds. on four occasions when the vehicle accelerated a crash occurred each time. there were no injuries. the contact has taken the vehicle to the dealer twice who stated that the brakes caused the failure since they were unaware of the floor mat or the sticky pedal recall. the contact stated that the failure could potentially cause serious injuries to occur. the failure mileage was 9,664.
This is the second incident i've experience with an engine surge and unintended acceleration. i was driving approx. 25mph towards an intersection. the light ahead was red, so i took my foot entirely off of the accelerator and let the car coast. it gradually slowed down as it always does, nothing unusual. as i came up on the red light i applied the brakes and rolled to a soft stop. i waited at a red light with my foot resting entirely on the brake pedal. all of a sudden--the first thing i noticed was the sound--the engine roared and the car tried to race forward despite my foot on the brake. i pressed harder on the brake to no avail. the car was fighting against me wanting to race forward. there was a stopped car ahead of me and i was trying not to crash into it. in desperation i stood up on the brakes as hard as i could and the car skid. i had to steer into oncoming traffic to avoid rear ending the car in front of me. i pulled the emergency brake and the car came to a stop diagonal across two lanes of traffic. i brought the car into toyota for a second time. dealer ran extensive tests on electronic and engine systems and said there was nothing wrong. they stated that the computer "history" showed no record of the incident. they offered no explanation nor any remedy. i am frustrated beyond belief that toyota is hiding behind "we can't find anything wrong" and is not trying harder to find the cause. there are no floor mats in my car, and there are no problems with the gas pedal. i would like to make very clear that my foot was entirely off of the gas pedal for at least 15 seconds prior to the failure. i am convinced that this incident was caused by a computer mis-fire or electronic malfunction that caused the engine to open full-throttle while the car was stopped and brakes engaged. toyota does not know what is wrong, and they don't know how to fix it --this is a huge problem! peoples lives are at stake! *tr
I backed my 2006 toyota corolla into a friend's driveway, and then put the car into drive to straighten it a bit. the car suddenly without warning shot across the street (perhaps at 45-50 mph), went over a 6" high cement retaining curbing, and across a lawn into another driveway. all the while i had my foot firmly on the brake (not the gas pedal). i swerved the wheel to avoid hitting a telephone pole, and the house. i finally got the car into neutral, and at last the brakes engaged, and i was able to stop the car avoiding a pick-up truck in the driveway and a tree. during this entire time the engine was loudly revving. other than 3 shredded tires and 2 ruined rims, the car seems to be intact. i have contacted toyota and hope for a successful resolution. the service manager at the dealership where this vehicle was purchased, however, said that since it is not under recall there is nothing they can do. meanwhile i will be fearful every time i get behind the wheel, which i have yet to do! 3 new tires and 2 new rims is a small price to pay - it could have been my life! had cars been passing by on this normally busy street, or children walking on the sidewalk on their way home from school - other lives as well could have been taken..this was a terrifying event! judging from all of the similar stories written regarding this make, model and year, toyota needs to do a recall to solve this problem once and for all. *tr
I was traveling westbound on i-80 at approximately 55-60 miles per hour during light rain. i took my foot off the gas pedal but the car continued to accelerate. i pushed the brake pedal a few times, but the braking system was non-responsive. i realized i would soon be approaching the car ahead of me, so i looked in my mirrors and over both shoulders to determine the locations of other vehicles. i wanted to change lanes so that i had more time to attempt other corrective actions. when i began the lane change and while my vehicle was continuing to accelerate, the vehicle spun out and i hit the center divide head-on. the accident stalled the motor. a highway patrol officer arrived on scene, but after arriving had to leave to go to a major-injury crash. *tr
My 2006 toyota corolla has had several episodes of unintended acceleration while going down steep mountains such as the grapevine pass near la and highway 101 between la and santa barbara. while going downhill, my 21 year old daughter tried to step on the brakes to slow down the car, but it suddenly accelerated to 90 miles an hour and she had some very very scary moments... we have taken the car to 2 different toyota dealerships on several occasions and called toyota's customer service number and service supervisors but our complaints were ignored on grounds that the 2006 corolla was"not on the recall list" or that they could not "replicate the problem". since the problem only happens on steep, downhill roads when my daughter steps on the brakes to slow down the car, it naturally cannot be replicated on the flat surfaces of sacramento or ontario, ca. after giving toyota such specific information, one would hope that they would try to explore it, fix it or replace the car given the high degree of danger and the high incidence of deadly crashes in recent years. we are very frustrated with their failure to fix the problem or refund us the blue book value so that we could purchase a safer car for our child. the problem reoccur every time my daughter drives this rout to come home from college on vacations. she has adapted by driving only 55 miles per hour on the grapevine pass on the slowest lane. however, now that we are cognizant of the problem and hear about so many other people with similar complaints, we are simply terrified and want to buy her a new and a safer car. we feel totally frustrated by toyota's failure to address the problem and by their tendency to brush it off despite the many fatalities. please continue to put governmental pressures on toyota and insist that they fix the problem rather than hide from it and abdicate their responsibility to their clients and other innocent drivers. please help us and please call or email us. *tr
March 4, 2010 2006 toyota corolla le. over the last few months, i am noticing sudden acceleration of my vehicle even when i am braking the vehicle and trying to stop it. before all these recall issues started, i thought it was just me or the road may have some downgrades. but now after seeing that thousands of other drivers are having this issue, i now feel my observation with my vehicle speeding suddenly is not an illusion. toyota has not included 2006 toyota corollas in their recall list. but i strongly feel that they should also be in the list as there may be several thousands of drivers like me, feeling this sudden acceleration and not reporting it because of the prolonged process. please have toyota take a look at 2006 corollas as well in their recall list. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota corolla. the contact stated whenever he is driving and approaching a stop sign and he depresses the brake the vehicle accelerate forward. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and was tested twice and they cannot duplicate the failure. the contact was told to continue driving the vehicle because there was no failure with the vehicle. the toyota manufacturer was called and they told the contact if the dealer cannot find the failure with the vehicle the vehicle had no problem. the failure mileage was 44,000.
Sudden acceleration at highway speeds in 2006 toyota corolla - on 11-24-09 traveling south on highway 5 in california near buttonwilow at approximately 70-75 miles per hour in the fast lane, probably while on cruise control, car began to accelerate, hit the brake which had no effect, and if it had been on cruise control, it did not override the acceleration. i began to get closer to the car in front of me. i do not believe i initially tried to put the car into neutral. i turned off the car engine, the acceleration stopped, i hit the brake somewhat to get it down to a regular speed, put the car into neutral, started it while coasting, put it back into gear (manual transmission), and the crisis was over. then, about an hour later, while on the grapevine portion of hwy 5 after the summit, it did the same thing with lesser traffic. i put it into neutral this time, hit the brake, slowed a little, put it back into gear and since then it has not occurred. see next paragraph. over the past 3 years, their have been a number of additional occasions with a different issue where: 1) my foot has slipped off the brake onto the accelerator causing the engine to rev when in neutral in the driveway or a stoplight (i think because the pedals are small and very close to one another), and; 2) occasions when the accelerator has got stuck under the floormat when the floormat had slid forward causing the car to accelerate. regarding the highway acceleration problem, this was not the case. *tr
