We have classified the 65 complaints from 2006 Toyota Corolla about ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING into the following categories.
Check engine light came on randomly 5 times over the past 2 months. filed complaint with toyota. ecm seems to be acting up, they think it's an issue with a manifold gasket. taking vehicle to dealer this week to have them diagnose the issue. *tr
Toyota has issued a technical service bulletin indicating that the a/c condenser is not properly protected, causing premature failure of the condenser unit. the number for this report is ac002-06. my a/c condenser has failed due to the faults in this condenser unit. i spoke with toyota at 1-800-331-4331, and they acknowledge that the part is faulty, but refuse to cover the replacement of this faulty unit as part of a recall. i'm concerned that, if toyota acknowledges that this part is faulty, they refuse to reall and replace this part. *tr
On may 19, 2013 my husband and children were at a rest stop...our 2006 toyota corolla was parked engine on with the air condition on as well when they heard a loud explosion from the back of the car the rear windshield had shattered into a million pieces. it is still being held up by the tint. we took the car in to atkins kroll toyota dealership and they just kept telling us there was nothing they could do because it wasn't a recall. this is a huge safety issue... my children could have had shards of glass all over their faces if it wasn't for the tint or had they been driving on the road could have caused an accident. there should definitely be a recall on this. while still at the dealership we were referred to the body shop to get it investigate it and the body man said it could have been caused by the metal clippings that hold the windshield together but still to no avail. *tr
Ac condenser stated leaking on 12/18/2011. steam was coming out of front of the car as it was parked at a store. i noticed this when i was exiting the store. two garages confirmed that it was the condenser. i went to do research on the condenser online and the complaints about defective condensers on the 2005 and 2006 corolla appeared on the web. problem was corrected on the 2007 and after corolla. condenser has to protection. could have the condenser replaced today and because of no protection, the problem could happen again the next day. very poor design...this leaves the owners of 2005 and 2006 corollas out in the cold! why no recall??? one of the garages that i went to way a toyota dealership...they want $735 (estimate) to correct the problem. it was poor design! i should not have to pay for heir mistake! *tr

I am the owner of a 2006 corolla 4-dr sedan. vin - omitted current mileage 48820 about a week ago, i noticed that the air conditioner was not working. i took it to my local dealership (michael's toyota in bellevue) for service where they told me that the a/c condenser has a hole in it and will need to be replaced - to the tune of $685. i was shocked by this so started doing a little research online only to learn that thousands of other 2006 corolla owners are experiencing the same problem. technical service bulletin ac002-06 was released by toyota admitting to the faulty design of the condenser which left it unprotected and vulnerable to road debris. i'm shocked and appalled by this. with all of the negative press that toyota has received in recent years, i would expect you to be going above and beyond to ensure that all known problems are corrected. i turned down the suggested replacement and will continue to seek arbitration. i have filed a complaint with toyota. i was surprised to find that several official complaints have already been filed, yet no recall. i come from a large family of toyota owners, we stand by our cars & trucks as they have always been extremely reliable. i will continue to endorse them. i just hope that they'll make this situation right. *tr
The a/c blows cool air not cold for about 20 minutes and stops blowing cool. you can turn the a/c off for a few minutes and then turn it back on and the air blows cool again for a few minutes then goes back to warm. i've noticed a slight smell (not bad) coming thru the vents sometimes and when i have the ac on, it seems to fluctuate between cool (never cold) and lukewarm. i also feel like i have to have it on the 2nd setting to feel air moving. *tr
I have toyota corolla 2006 le in which a/c stop working as of 4/25/10. it was working last week. *tr

Received a safety recall from toyota for my 2006 toyota corolla s for engine control module (ecm). i scheduled an appointment to have the part replaced. i took off work and dropped my car off at the dealer, sloan toyota in devon, pa. i received a call shortly after saying the part was not there and would be ordered, then they tried told me about a belt they could repair for me in the amount of $150.00. i declined that service and picked my car up. i received an email a week later saying my car was scheduled for service during the time i would be at work. i called and was told an automated email goes out a week after service has not been completed and they were still waiting on the part to come in for this safety recall. they said i would receive a call and here it is 4 months later and have not heard if the part ever came in or not. my understanding from reading the safety recall was that the part was at the dealer. i received an urgent safety recall follow up letter today, july 23, 2011 saying my car has not been taken in for service as of this time and needs to. i am not taking another day off from work just to take my car and then told the part is still not in. if toyota issues a safety recall then the parts should already be at the dealer's before people call in to schedule service, or at least tell the people they have to order the part and they will call when it has arrived. *tr
2006 toyota corolla. consumer states failure of the central computer and brake failure caused a crash *tgw the consumer stated when her daughter applied the brake to reduce her speed to steer around another vehicle, the brakes locked up and steering the vehicle became difficult. ultimately, her daughter collided with another vehicle. when she attempted to move the vehicle, the vehicle had stalled. also, the air bags failed to deploy and she strongly impacted the seat belt causing injury to her shoulder. the consumer stated ecu was replaced last april at a cost of $700. a reading of the ecu the following day, showed there was no accident. the consumer believed the ecu may have caused the abs to lock up. the vehicle was declared a loss by the insurance company. *jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota corolla. the contact stated that while attempting a right turn, the vehicle stalled without warning. he was able to restart the vehicle but after a few minutes the failure recurred without warning. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for inspection nor was it repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure and current mileage was 51,076.
I filed a complaint, odi number 10313597 to bring attention to a potentially hazardous condition with my 2006 toyota corolla. as stated in the original complaint, my vehicles ecu (engine computer) failed while in traffic 2 times on this vehicle. i was pleased to find out that a recall for this issue was initiated for my model year corolla. called toyota for more information about the recall and they said that my vin number vehicle was not affected by the recall. i tried to explain to the operator that my vehicle's ecu had failed twice and had been replaced by a dealership. she could not give me a reason why my vehicle was not part of the recall. called dealer to find out if the last ecu was an updated one that would not fail and the parts guy thought it was.i am filing this complaint to see if the recall can be expanded to include my vehicle so if the current computer does fail, that i can get it replaced under the recall. when these computers fail the vehicle's engine dies and is hard to restart. this can happen at anytime, driving in traffic, pulling out into traffic and this can been very dangerous. *tr
While driving the car on monday january 11, 2011 it began to violently shake and a loud noise was coming from under the hood. drove the car to a auto repair shop who stated the engine had sludge and there was no oil in the engine. this auto repair shop performed a oil change in sept 2010 and noted some sludge in the engine. the repair shop recommended replacing the engine as it was not repairable. i spent $5397 to have a jasper remanufactored engine installed in the toyota. i decided to perform an internet search to see if there were other complaints regarding the toyota engine in light of the recent toyota recalls. i discovered an article that referenced odi's investigation of similar problems with the 2006 toyota corolla engine 1zz-fe. the auto repair shop stated that oil changes should be done every 2,000 miles and not the 5,000 miles indicated in the toyota manual. this is not the first problem i've had with the toyota corolla. in 2009 the car's dashboard wire shorted out behind the wheel causing the fuses to blow. i took it to the toyota dealer who repaired the problem. i've always purchased honda in the past and have a 2006 honda accord. i will never purchase a toyota ever again. *tr
Taking action of toyota regarding safety recall is conducted very slowly. i had got the recall notice from toyota around september 2010 in this letter notified that toyota will send the second recall notice when the replacement part is ready. toyota will begin mailing the second owner letter in late november 2010. i had called and stopped by at toyota (central florida toyota) so many times for asking about this problem and when can i get the vehicle fixed. all the service advisors at this toyota dealer said the same answers, you have to wait for the second letter from toyota and you can drive the car regularly if you dont have any problem as described. i have to wait approximately 4 months for the second letter from toyota. on the 4th of january 2011, my car had got a problem. at the meantime, my wife drove the car and my daughter, 9 years old was on broad. the engine was stopped while the car was being driven. fortunately, there were no cars follow us and we were not on the freeway. my car was towed to central florida toyota dealer for getting fixed and the engine control module (ecm) was replaced. we are not sure whether this problem will be occurred again. it is very dangerous, therefore, the safety recall remedy conducted by toyota should be implemented more efficiently and faster than they do right now.

This is to report an accident i was involved in on thursday september 30, 2010 in the morning around 4:30am, in baltimore, maryland, on interstate i-95 northbound, close to exit 80, with my 2006 toyota corolla. my car was recalled back in late august 2010 and i took it to the dealer as soon as i received the notification. after inspecting the engine, the dealer confirmed that a computer in the engine was defective. however, they could not replace the missing part at the time but indicated that i will receive notice in the mail for when i could bring the car back. that thursday morning it was raining and i was driving around 50 miles/hour when i noticed that the speed needle went completely to the end of the speedometer and came back. it did this twice before suddenly accelerating and sending the car off the road. my car hit a tree from the back passenger side before stopping. the airbag deployed and i incurred several bodily injuries around the neck, chest, right shoulder, right hip and back. i was taken to the er right after the accident and back again yesterday monday october 4, 2010 because i could not move. my car is still in a towing lot but my insurance will move it to a collision center in the coming days. i believe it might be important to investigate this crash but i am not sure who to connect with directly and hope you can advise. my direct line is [xxx]. thank you in advance for your assistance. 2006 toyota corolla air conditioner stopped blowing at 51,000 miles. after reviewing several posts on auto repair sites it appears as though the air conditioner stops working on 2006 models between 48,000 and 55,000 miles some issues have been condenser and others are the blower and/or relay. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota corolla. the contact was braking for a traffic stop when the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was able to immediately restart the vehicle as it operated as normal. the contact continued driving 70 mph as the check engine light illuminated and the vehicle stalled a second time. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the computer engine module was replaced. the failure did not recur. the failure and current mileage was 104,296.
We bought a 2006 certified corolla le on june 19, 2010 from a dealership in northern virginia. on august 18, 2010 my daughter was driving the car and while at stop light earlier that day her car hesitated and didn't want to move. that evening around 8:30 pm as she was driving her car, the road curved slightly to the right but she was not able to turn the wheel or depress the brakes. she crossed the on coming lane and the car was totaled. she was able to walk away from this with only hundreds of small cuts from glass. the initial thought was that she had hydroplaned but after further talking to my daughter she said that she tried to turn the steering wheel to follow the road but she couldn't because it was too hard and the brakes would not depress either. i had my mechanic go to the yard where the car was stored and read the computer and this is what he found: check engine light find p0430 evap system pressure sensor high input and in the history he found 2 codes: the same p0430 and b2799 engine immobilizer system fault. so as it seems now the car did shut off and she was not able to control the steering or brakes due to not having power. i have read that this is not the first report of this happening. something should be done before someone gets hurt really bad or there is a fatal accident. i would like to know if being a certified car, should this have been detected before the car was sold? also, is the computer read before the car is sold to see if there has been or is a problem? if it is not read, then maybe it should be a new policy for the dealerships. *tr
I have a 2006 corolla sport with 52,000 miles on it. yesterday in my way home it stalled in the middle of the traffic. the car was towed to the nearest dealership. the service manager called me today stating that the computer or ecm had to be replaced. according to nhtsa action number : pe09054 nhtsa recall campaign number : n/a make / models : model/build years: toyota / corolla 2006 toyota / corolla matrix 2006 wondering how many owners of this type of vehicle had same problems, yet toyota has not issue a recall to fix these issues. serious accidents could happen if these issues are not addressed in timely manner. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota corolla. while traveling 65 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated and the vehicle stalled within seconds. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where the ecm was replaced. the vin was not available. the current and failure mileage was 70,000.
I have a 2006 toyota corolla that started exhibiting violent shaking while driving. shortly after then check engine light came on. i took it to my local autozone for a diagnostics scan and it returned code "p2716 - pressure control solenoid". i discovered that toyota currently has a tsb on this issue (tc015-07) but not an official recall. even though no accident occurred in this case, this is a serious safety issue as the shaking slowed the car down and could have caused an accident had it had been on the highway. other people have reported the car completely shutting of. *tr
I was driving my 2006 toyota corolla s on the freeway today, and suddenly, without warning, the engine shut down. i had no power steering or abs brakes, and no control of the car. after having it towed to the dealership, i found out that 2005-2009 toyota corollas have a huge issue with the engine control module, and that upwards of 5 cars a month come into the dealership with this same complaint. i find it ridiculous that every review i've read mentions that this car has this problem with the ecm, but that nothing has been done about it yet. on top of the reviews, there have been news reports about how toyota is aware of this problem, and says that this problem does not pose an unreasonable risk to safety. *tr
I heard on the radio that you have had over 1,000 complaints about the 2005-06 toyota corollas with regard to engine control modules (ecms) and possible stalls. my 2006 corolla started to stutter when i accelerated from 45 to 55 mph. i could tell that one of the spark plugs was misfiring and i was afraid the engine was going to stall in heavy traffic. the engine did not stall, but the check engine light came on. i searched the internet and found that toyota had a bad batch of ecms in 2005-2006 , but did not to recall them. instead, they waited to see which units actually failed before replacing the defective ecms. when i took the car to the dealership, i told the service writer that it appeared to be a defective ecm. he told me i was mistaken about the ecm and that it had nothing to do with the spark plug misfiring. after they checked the car, i was told that a plug had fouled out. i was charged over $500 to replace all of the plugs and the ignition coil, not just the one fouled plug . i was also charged $120 to clean what i was told would be the fouled fuel injector, but it was listed as 'intake cleaning service.' i picked up the car and didn't get 2 miles from the shop before the check engine light came on again. on the second trip to shop they reset the light and said that they couldn't duplicate the condition again. so i took the car and drove it home. the next day on the way to work, the light came on again. on the third trip to the shop, they finally admitted the ecm had to be replaced. the ecm was free, but i am still out over $620 in repairs for damage caused by a defective ecm. my plugs had only 70,000 miles (mostly highway) on them and should have lasted until 120,000 miles. on top of the repairs, i wasted a lot of gas. now that the ecm was replaced, i am getting 2 more miles per gallon. *tr
2006 toyota corolla with 1zz-fe engine, less then 25,000 miles, has stalled at a stop sign/stop light when engine was warm. this has happened 3 times in the previous two months. the car has always re-started, but it is very unnerving, and i am worried about a more serious failure. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 toyota corolla. while driving out of the driveway at approximately 5 mph the vehicle completely shut off. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where they replaced the main control module and they calibrated it per the warranty. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for routine maintenance a couple weeks prior to the failure. the manufacturer was contacted and a claim was filed. the failure mileage was 13,410.
With no warning, car stalled in middle of road, restarted moments later with no power, not revving over 2000 rpms. 15- 20 min later will run for short time, 3- 10 miles, but then stalls again. the engine gives no warning it's about to stall. leading up to this series of events was no warning at all. scanned obdii code p0607 came up. *tr
Squeak from engine in 3/4/08 with 15,800 miles. i can only hear out of one ear so this squeak was only evident when i was next to a building (drive thru at bank). not screaming like fan belts tend to do. toyota said "belt glazed over causing belt to slip at pulleys, replaced belt, noise no longer present at this time." now at 33,359 the ecm had to be fixed and they said "the drive belt tensioner and drive belt need to be replaced costing over $400." the same belt that was replace a little over 15,000 miles before. i did not have them do the work but it will have to be fixed because if the belt breaks then the car is dead, much like the ecm problem (which was a large pain in the...). there will be an incident if i don't get it fixed. and again i cannot hear a squeak unless a really listen or again i pull up to a building. *tr
I had an engine light come on and the car would run rough and the a/c would not run. then the car would run okay and the a/c would be working. i took it to a toyota dealership and they said i need a new evap canister and new a/c compressor . this was put on and i brought the car home. the a/c worked too well..when the fan and heater were on the a/c kept right on running. i took it back and they replaced the control air, computer and still not working. then they put another new computer on it and not working. then they pulled the dash and checked the wiring..nothing. then they did rewiring work, then they did circuit work and the a/c still does not work. i waited for two weeks for them to tell me when an eng will come look at the car.they had the car 6 out of 7 weeks and i finally brought the car home and it is sitting in the yard..car is running but i still have no a/c and i am still waiting for a call from the dealership. no one has ever called to tell me anything at all about the car...i have had to call them . i looked in the computer to find that toyota had a problem with their 2006 corolla a/c but never recalled. but i can't get anyone at the dealership to tell me anything at all about this. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 toyota corolla. while driving at 40 mph, the engine stalled and turned off completely. after sitting in the idle position for 40 minutes, the vehicle finally restarted. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership but the failure could not be duplicated. the current and failure mileages were approximately 26,000. updated 11/03/10. *lj updated 11/19/10. *lj the dealer stated the cause of the engine failure was due to a bad battery. updated 11/24/10
Unintended acceleration. slowed to a near stop at a red arrow. the car started to creep into the intersection, pushed harder on the brakes and it did not stop the car. the engine rpms increased. shifted into n, went to r for a second then back to n. rpms decreased and then the car appeared ok. look at the floor mat and it did not appear to be out of place. first time was today. no repairs yet. *tr
Driving @ 60mph when the engine and all electrical components completely shut off. i had no power steering and due to no power assist brakes the car was more difficult to stop. it is extremely dangerous to be driving along and have that happen. i was fortunate to be on a country road with no other traffic. had i been on a busy interstate at 70mph it could have been very problematic. toyota has said that the ecm needs replaced and that the engine cut off on them as well when they tried it. it did restart the following day but i was too afraid to drive it again and had it towed to the dealer! *tr
On april 23,2010, our 2006 toyota corolla shut itself off without warning while we were driving. we only had a few seconds to pull off the road before it coasted to a stop. the car was doing fine before this incident, and we had no idea anything was wrong. on april 27, the engine computer was replaced at a toyota dealer. the parts salesman and the service receptionist told me that the computers chronically fail in these cars and they keep all possible types in stock to replace them. *tr
2006 toyota corolla stalling and/or stopping unexpectedly. check engine light comes on. car sometime operates at about 20% power. *tr
I was driving my mom's 2006 toyota corolla ce tonight. i was stopped at a red light waiting to turn left. the light turned green, i pressed the gas pedal and the car stalled and it would barely move at all and the check engine light came on. i was thankfully able to get off to the shoulder of the road without being in an accident. after i got to the shoulder off the road the car sounded like it was about to quit running and just die out. i turned the car off and restarted it. the check engine light was still on and i was terrified about having to drivethe car home, about 2 miles from my destination at that time, but i tried it and when i pushed the gas pedal, after i restarted the car, it done okay and did not stall. however, the check engine light never went out even after restarting the care. this is a big safetly risk and needs to be fixed by toyota. someone could have hit me in the back end and it is definitely a safety hazard and needs to be resolved! i was very upset when this happened not sure what i was going to do. please investigate this issue. i no longer feel safe driving any toyota product. again, i was driving my mom's 2006 toyota corolla ce. i am the owner of a 2007 scion tc and i am thinking about trading it off because i no longer feel safe driving anything made by toyota. before today, i wasn't really worried about driving my mom's car since none of the incidents where the vehicle speeds up and you can't stop it affected her model but after this incident today, i will not be driving her car at all. i feel like my life is at danger when in a toyota. please help protect my safety and families around america. toyota needs to make a recall regarding this because it is a safety risk!!!! despite what toyota says. they haven't been in the situation themselves. it is absolutely no fun. if they can't fix the problems, they need to just shut down. people's lives are at risk. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 toyota corolla. while the contact was driving approximately 30 mph the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was coasted to the side of the road, and towed to an authorized dealer. the failure was contributed to the engine software. the vehicle was repaired under the service warranty. the failure and current mileage were 26,000.
2006 corolla 4dr sedan has a faulty electronic control unit (computer) that causes complete engine shutdown. diagnostic code p2716 for this model year gets 40,000 hits on google and yet there is no recall on this defective part. dealer replacement with updated ecu part cost me $830 on this 3-year old car (we're at 83k miles so out of warranty). *cn
2006 toyota le - a few months back we had a stall out that we took in to toyota dealer tricounty toyota, limerick, pa and they said it was caused by computer module. now we have a check engine lite on that we have to take in. with the acceleration problems asked for the brake override system which they would not put in as it was not a problem they said is this car on the recall list for the fuel pump and brake problems? i do not see it listed anywhere, and emailed to toyota about this tonite. *tr
There was no warning. drive car 400 miles per week. one day i drove car to commuter parking lot with no problem, that evening it started fine then stalled when i put it in gear. took a while to start the 2nd time and stalled again. this happened 4 times then i had it towed to dealer. dealer said the engine computer needed to be replaced with no real explanation. i even asked to speak to the mechanic who could not provide an explanation other than it happens. computer was replaced and the car runs fine. they said it was only warrantied for 1 year. as i was away from home i had to rent a car for 2 days while they made the repairs. *tr
My 2006 toyota corolla began stalling on the highway last night and ultimately left me stranded on the side of the road. after sitting for several minutes and trying to restart, the temperature gauge would sometimes respond and other times would not move when the key was turned to start the engine. when the gauge doesn't move the car will not start. when the gauge does move the car sometimes starts but will only go a few feet before stalling again. the check engine light is on permanently. there is no sign of over heating or of an oil level problem. the car is currently at a garage awaiting analysis. *tr
Car engine suddenly stalls or looses power when driving , could have been a very serious accident. transmission shifts very hard. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 toyota corolla. when the contact was at a stop light, the vehicle suddenly shut off and after two attempts she was able to restart it. when she drove the vehicle to the mechanic, it shut off four times and the check engine light would appear on the instrument panel. the dealer replaced the ecm and mass air filter censor at the owners expense. the failure mileage was 59900 and the current mileage was 60000.
I own a 2006 toyota corolla le. earlier this month, i lost all but an extremely minimal amount of power while driving. i nursed the car to my home and contacted my local toyota dealership by telephone and described the problem. over the phone, the service person with whom i spoke said that he believed the problem was with one of the car's computers. he indicated that the problem i described was not unique, but that i should bring it in for formal diagnostic tests. when i had the car towed into the dealership, the service personnel verified that one of the car's computers had to be replaced. i spoke with two of the service personnel at the time and both gave me the impression that the problem was not unusual for that year's corolla le. i bring this to your attention because of the current questions regarding toyota's problems and the possibility that some of the major problems could have an electronic origin. *tr
While driving my 2006 toyota corolla ce it stalled at an intersection effecting steering and braking after it stalled it took several attempts to get the car to start and run. while returning home it stalled two more times, while i was driving i also notice that the car would not accelerate pasted 20 mph even while pushing the pedal all the way down and hard shifted into drive. *tr
My 2006 toyota corolla experienced a failure with the ecm that caused the check engine light to come on and report a p2716 error code. the problem caused the transmission to lock up spontaneously and shift very hard. my independent mechanic who read the code had an advanced odc scanner that indicated the car was idling when the problem suddenly happened. the toyota dealership personnel informed me that several cars had been coming in with this report, but the company was only addressing the issue for customers who were still under warranty. several customers who discussed this problem on the internet reported that their car would suddenly stall while on the road, and it seems that toyota should be issuing yet another recall, but isn't. please investigate this matter and hold the toyota corporation responsible for its defect. *tr

Car: 2006 toyota corolla le when driving the car around a turn, accelerator pedal lost power, the car stalled and the engine died. this happened within a few seconds. on trying to restart, the car sputtered for a few seconds and then died again. and, after that the car engine would not start at all. there was no power in the accelerator pedal at all. maintenance is up to date on the car and its at the car shop right now. this was a scary moment, because if i had been on the freeway, it would have definitely led to a crash. please take appropriate steps to investigate this. *tr
