We have classified the 77 complaints from 2006 Toyota Corolla about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Car stalled while turning at an intersection; car was in motion. dashboard went black. no power or control of vehicle. was unable to restart vehicle with multiple attempts. all systems were 'dead'. after ~ 30 minutes, was able to spontaneously start vehicle and drive. battery had been replaced~18 mos. ago; tank was full.
On my third clock switch in my steering column it is the device that feeds power to the air bag for the driver side air bag it seem that if the car detects a short or interruption in the electrical line it will light up the dash light . for me this has happen 3 time i am at 95,000. mileage. replacing the clock spring switch fixes it but the part is nether a switch or a spring go figure. hope this helps
One day i was returning from work it was around 3:30pm when all of a sudden my radio display turnd black on me, "if only just 5econds" then it came yu !back on but now at night whenever i turn my lights mmm on the radio desplay turns dark almost. and the backup camera is also very dark when my lights are on.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota corolla. after the vehicle was started, the passenger side air bag warning indicator illuminated. the contact stated that the light went off moments later. in addition, when the heating system was activated, a burning odor emitted into the vehicle from the ventilation system. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was unknown.
My2006 toyota corolla s i have noticed revved up and then back down while in motion and non motion for no apparent reason. problem unknown. i am having fade paint issues, my headlights are so fogged i can't see at night, and my digital clock dims in and out.
Was driving when airbag light on dash came on, have checked fuses, cleaned all electrical leads and it remains on, been on six months now. airbag recall fixed today, told dealer to look at light. once fixed dealer said light still on because the steering spring coil in the steering column has cut something that turns the airbag light on, cost to fix $500. i said let the ligt stay on then, he said it could affect airbag, it might not deploy.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota corolla. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v285000 (electrical system); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was notified of the issue. the contact had not experienced a failure. parts distribution disconnect. updated 07/13/16*lj updated 07/13/16.*jb
My 2006 toyota corolla horn just stopped working one day for no apparent reason. i took it to my local toyota dealership and i was told that the airbag was faulty and it would have to be replaced. i assumed that it (the airbag) would be replaced at toyota's expense, because of there many airbag recalls. this was not the case, toyota is claiming that my vehicle is not on the airbag recall list. so, i contacted toyota corporate office and of course i received the "sorry we can't help you statement"! this is not a wear and tear item, so how is it possible that toyota get to choose what airbags should be on there recall list? beware all toyota owners!!! *tr
I was driving my car home from work. suddenly the car won't move forward and on the dashboard all the lights keeps light up and blinking and the car gradually died on the road. it's so dangerous. i see emc is listed recall but i don't receive any letter from dealer to fix its problem. please let me know with vin number above is on the list of recall. i have checked the alternator, it works ok and the battery is ok (just replace a few months ago). if it is recall, should i bring it to dealer to fix it even i didn't receive their letter. *tr
Our toyota corolla 2006 had a srs air bag warning light come on. we took it to the dealership and we were informed that the driver?s airbag module is attached to a spiral cable assembly with electrical connections that have become damaged from turning the steering wheel. the damage to the spinal wire caused the air bag warning lamp to illuminate which means that the air bags may not deploy in an accident. the spinal cord needs to be replaced. there is a similar issue on other corollas i believe they are years 2009 and 2010 and so i think this needs to be looked into since it is happening on our vehicle. *tr
Check engine light came on randomly 5 times over the past 2 months. filed complaint with toyota. ecm seems to be acting up, they think it's an issue with a manifold gasket. taking vehicle to dealer this week to have them diagnose the issue. *tr
This is the 2nd time the computer ecu unit failed. my daughter drove the car to performance collision for some body work repairs. the body shop called to inform us that they couldn't complete the repairs because the car wouldn't start. i called aaa who towed the car to performance toyota. after they inspected the vehicle the technician manager told me that the ecu unit failed again and this time it was out of warranty. i had to pay $725.74 and performance toyota again replaced the ecu unit. toyota replaced the initial ecu on august 25, 2008 ( i filed a separate complaint) under warranty. i explained to toyota that a computer should not have to be replaced at all and out of all the 7 cars i've owned over the pass 40 years this is the first car that ever had so many mechanical problems. toyota claimed that the ecu computers don't last very long and need to be replaced about every 4 years. i don't believe these ecu are quality units and are defective. i'm hoping to get my money refunded. *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota corolla. the contact stated that the front driver side door panel caught on fire. the contact stated the wiring was burned and caused damage to the front driver side seat, and to the interior of the vehicle. the fire department did not report to the scene and the fire went out on its own. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic. the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for the replacement of the front driver side door and seat. the wiring in the door was also replaced. the contact was not aware of the exact repair however, the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.
1. received a letter from toyota indicating that a safety defect exists in my engine control module (ecm) for my 2006 toyota corolla. i took my car to springfield toyota on 2/22/2011. they replaced the ecm and now the service engine light is on. they told me that in order to turn the service engine light off , it will require additional diagnosis and that i would have to pay $300 to $400. the dealership left the ecm disconnected and service engine light is on all the time. 2. the service light is on all the time. this may be a safety issue. 3. dealership does not want to fix the problem unless i pay them for the diagnosis time. with the old ect i did not have any problems with the car. i took my car to the dealership to have the ecm replaced based on the letter from toyota. dealership kept the old ecm and refused to give it back to me nor fix the problem. *tr
April 2010 - tachometer started 'jumping' around. cel would illuminate on and off and the car would occasionally act like it wanted to stall and acted sluggish. june 2010 - brought to local shop that said it might be a computer issue and to take to toyota. took to toyota, toyota said that it was just a bad tachometer and that i could choose to replace it. i did not. cel light continued to go on and off. vehicle would sometimes shift very hard or seem to have trouble. september 2010 - the vehicle almost stalled at 45mph when it seemed like it was trying to switch gears (auto transmission). when going highway speeds the rpms would not get over 1800 when normally it runs around 2300 (at 65mph) when i would step on brake, rpms would drop to around 1000 and then to the point of stalling. sometimes i have to drive with the left foot on the brake and the right foot on the accelerator to not have it stall in stop and go traffic. sometimes at a light, i put it in neutral and continue to rev the engine. some days the vehicle seems to be running fine, other times it is very stressful to drive when it is having issues. october 2010 - received recall letter from toyota regarding the ecm (engine control module) and that parts will start to be come available the end of november. called toyota corporate and they said they did not currently have a fix for the problem. continue to drive this vehicle because it is my only means of transportation. *tr
My corolla 2006 stalled on the highway with out warning. i was almost hit by other cars while trying to get my corolla to the side of the road with no power. it would not restart. car was towed to dealership and was found to have a bad ecm. the ecm was replaced and we will see if this one will work. this could have turned out bad if there was more traffic on the highway! *tr
I own a 2006 toyota corolla. the check engine light came on in the middle of driving but i did not notice any issues. the following day the car started shifting hard when i accelerated while driving. i took the car in for an oil change and they ran a diagnostic test and the code came back p2716: shift solenoid valve slt/range. i researched the code and found many forums with people having the same issues and the problem being the ecm. i took the car into the local dealership and gave them the information i found on the issues. they diagnosed the car and i said i needed the ecm replaced. the car has 82,000 miles and is out of warranty. the repair is running close to $900, the regional toyota representative has offered to split the cost. i feel this is unfair and a recall should have been issued. i also have a friend who has a 2007 corolla that just took her car in for the same problem. i am going to continue to speak with toyota in hopes they will cover the repair. *tr
I was driving in afternoon commuter traffic in washington, dc, when, while stopped at a red light, my car "hiccuped" once and died. i was able to restart it, but as i drove through the green light, my car began to lose power, slow down, then stalled out in the middle of the road. i was able to restart the car, but it wouldn't go over 25 mph, then almost immediately slowed and stalled out again. after that, it took approximately 10 tries to get the engine to turn over and the car to start only long enough to move it 50 feet or so to a safer area. the problem, according to toyota, is a faulty computer (ecm) that the company was aware of but did not directly notify owners of. (based on what the toyota repair person said, this problem mirrors what is reported in nhtsa action number pe09054 and technical service bulletin tc015-07 - hard shift and stalling). *tr
I have a 2006 corolla sport with 52,000 miles on it. yesterday in my way home it stalled in the middle of the traffic. the car was towed to the nearest dealership. the service manager called me today stating that the computer or ecm had to be replaced. according to nhtsa action number : pe09054 nhtsa recall campaign number : n/a make / models : model/build years: toyota / corolla 2006 toyota / corolla matrix 2006 wondering how many owners of this type of vehicle had same problems, yet toyota has not issue a recall to fix these issues. serious accidents could happen if these issues are not addressed in timely manner. *tr
I was driving 60 mph on the highway in my 2006 toyota corolla (manual transmission, 40,331 on the odometer) when i lost all acceleration. the car's engine did not stop but the malfunction indicator lamp came on and simultaneously i lost the ability to accelerate. luckily i was able to maneuver across three lanes to the shoulder; when i finally tried to brake, i had no power and had to push the brakes to the floor; when i did this the car shuddered. the toyota dealer repaired this by replacing the ecu (electronic control unit/computer), code 0607 at no charge to me. the part is included in the 8year/80,000 mile federal emissions warranty. according to what i've read about this issue, gleaned from the nhtsa database, many others have experienced the same problem but toyota has not recalled this defective part. this is a serious safety concern and i urge toyota to reconsider its position. *tr
2006 toyota corolla- for the third time in 3 weeks the computer ecm has failed- extremely dangerous if the car stalls in middle of a highway. toyota knows about it, has a tsb on it. *tr
I was driving my 2006 toyota corolla s on the freeway today, and suddenly, without warning, the engine shut down. i had no power steering or abs brakes, and no control of the car. after having it towed to the dealership, i found out that 2005-2009 toyota corollas have a huge issue with the engine control module, and that upwards of 5 cars a month come into the dealership with this same complaint. i find it ridiculous that every review i've read mentions that this car has this problem with the ecm, but that nothing has been done about it yet. on top of the reviews, there have been news reports about how toyota is aware of this problem, and says that this problem does not pose an unreasonable risk to safety. *tr
06 corolla stalled @ intersection w/ check eng lite on- would not restart-almost got rear-ended-had the computer scanned by a mechanic and told me computer is bad-car still won't start. *tr
On 24 june 2010 i drove 1331 miles back from virginia with no issues. the next evening, my permitted 15 year old son was driving my 2006 toyota corolla a mere half mile from our home when my car began to shutter and lose power. the accelerator was unresponsive and then the car shut down taking with it all lights. the check engine light illuminated. the car did restart but instantly died leaving us on the side of the road at night with no lights and unable to move. fortunately i was with him and we were not in traffic, as he is inexperienced and would not have reacted well if this had happened to him on the road unaccompanied in any type of traffic. we pushed the car home the mile and parked it for the night. the next morning the car started, ran for one minute, bogged and died with the check engine light still illuminated. i applied a rented scan tool and came back with a p0607 trouble code with indicated a bad ecu. the car was towed to toyota and was repaired with the replacement of the ecu for $993.40. i am over the emission warranty of 80,000 miles per their tsb with 94,000, so this is out of my pocket. this is frustrating as the internet is littered with stories of this happening to others. i am glad that i made it home before this problem occurred and it appears that toyota has been lucky as well. this is extremely unsafe and occurs with no warning. i just hope someone doesn't have to die as a result of a well known bad batch of ecu's, before the problem is fixed by a recall. *tr
2006 toyota corolla with 1zz-fe engine, less then 25,000 miles, has stalled at a stop sign/stop light when engine was warm. this has happened 3 times in the previous two months. the car has always re-started, but it is very unnerving, and i am worried about a more serious failure. *tr
My check engine light infrequently would come on and off starting in june 2010, along with the car jerking during acceleration at speeds of 10, 25 and 35. 7/7/10 i took my corolla into a local dealership for diagnosis of the problem, code p2716. i was informed that my engine computer (ecm) needed to be replaced. for safety purposes i had the ecm replaced. the nhtsa has opened a defect investigation into the issue. the number is #pe09054. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 toyota corolla. while driving at 40 mph, the engine stalled and turned off completely. after sitting in the idle position for 40 minutes, the vehicle finally restarted. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership but the failure could not be duplicated. the current and failure mileages were approximately 26,000. updated 11/03/10. *lj updated 11/19/10. *lj the dealer stated the cause of the engine failure was due to a bad battery. updated 11/24/10
4/18/10 car felt like it was going to stall while we were driving 4/24/10 engine stalled right after it was turned on & then half a block away at intersection. both times car re-started 4/27/10 engine stalled when i came to stop at a stop sign at major intersection. was able to re-start right away 5/1/10 engine stalled 3 times within a one mile distance. the 3rd time was while driving down a major road & needed to coast to shoulder. had to wait before engine would re-start. at first we thought i had bought bad gas or the gas cap wasn't on tight. i bought good gas & then after yesterday realized something major was wrong. i was checking on line this morning & found other toyota corollas that had the same problem with stalling out...the emc?? drove the car to the dealer this afternoon, sunday, & will be there first thing tomorrow morning to talk with service dept. *tr
2006 corolla stalled, did not restart easily and "check engine" light came on. *tr
Driving @ 60mph when the engine and all electrical components completely shut off. i had no power steering and due to no power assist brakes the car was more difficult to stop. it is extremely dangerous to be driving along and have that happen. i was fortunate to be on a country road with no other traffic. had i been on a busy interstate at 70mph it could have been very problematic. toyota has said that the ecm needs replaced and that the engine cut off on them as well when they tried it. it did restart the following day but i was too afraid to drive it again and had it towed to the dealer! *tr
I'm writing because there is an injustice in the way that toyota is handling yet another issue. my husband was driving his 2006 toyota corolla on 4/21/10 when it stalled while he was driving. he lost all power, so he could not even turn on his hazards. luckily, thankfully, he was not hurt and did not hurt anyone else. here is a link to an article on toyota nation with 4 pages of blogs written by people with the same issue: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=201631 had my 5 year old son been in the car with him and they were driving on the freeway, things could be much much different, and i'm lucky. i just wish someone would talk about this. this problem is associated with a bad ecm (electronic control module) and affects 2005-2007 corollas and matrixes. unfortunately, there was a technical service bulletin in reference to 2005-2007 toyota corolla & matrix ecms. tsb eg042-07 (september 20th 2007) but car owners were never informed of the issue. *tr
While driving my 2006 corolla on vacation the motor stalled and the check engine light came on. luckily we were in a parking lot and after a minute or two the engine restarted but just went a few yards and stalled again. after checking the fluids (all ok) i waited about 10 minutes and once again started the engine, this time i was able to drive about one block before it stalled again in traffic and i had to push it off the side of the road. i called a towtruck and had it taken to a nearby toyota dealer in simi valley, ca. after leaving it there overnight, they called and said it needed a new ecm (engine control module). that was replaced as well as some routine service work. they did not charge for the ecm as they were familiar with that problem. i consider this a safety issue as it results in almost complete loss of brakes and steering. *tr
I was driving my mom's 2006 toyota corolla ce tonight. i was stopped at a red light waiting to turn left. the light turned green, i pressed the gas pedal and the car stalled and it would barely move at all and the check engine light came on. i was thankfully able to get off to the shoulder of the road without being in an accident. after i got to the shoulder off the road the car sounded like it was about to quit running and just die out. i turned the car off and restarted it. the check engine light was still on and i was terrified about having to drivethe car home, about 2 miles from my destination at that time, but i tried it and when i pushed the gas pedal, after i restarted the car, it done okay and did not stall. however, the check engine light never went out even after restarting the care. this is a big safetly risk and needs to be fixed by toyota. someone could have hit me in the back end and it is definitely a safety hazard and needs to be resolved! i was very upset when this happened not sure what i was going to do. please investigate this issue. i no longer feel safe driving any toyota product. again, i was driving my mom's 2006 toyota corolla ce. i am the owner of a 2007 scion tc and i am thinking about trading it off because i no longer feel safe driving anything made by toyota. before today, i wasn't really worried about driving my mom's car since none of the incidents where the vehicle speeds up and you can't stop it affected her model but after this incident today, i will not be driving her car at all. i feel like my life is at danger when in a toyota. please help protect my safety and families around america. toyota needs to make a recall regarding this because it is a safety risk!!!! despite what toyota says. they haven't been in the situation themselves. it is absolutely no fun. if they can't fix the problems, they need to just shut down. people's lives are at risk. *tr
Failure of powertrain control module, obdii code p2716. vehicle stops all forward progress. toyota has issued tsb on issue. appears rampant by internet search. just occurred to me. *tr
My engine light came on indicating p2716-trans shift solenoid error-refer to tsb for ecm replacement. my mechanic explained to me that this was covered under warranty for the 2005 model year but i was told by the toyota dealer that the mfg date of my car was 12/2005.
One saturday afternoon, my 2006 corolla with only 32k mileage on it just stopped in the middle of the freeway (i-880 south bound) in oakland, ca just after the oak exit. to make things worse, the area where it stopped has no shoulder. the chp pushed the car to the nearby off ramp and i had it towed to the toyota dealership in hayward. the service attendant told me my car had a computer problem which happened in 2005 and 2006 models of corolla. they did some fixes on it. when i was picking it up, settled their exorbitant fees and wait on the side for the car, it took me over 20 minutes to wait. it turned out the car broke again with the same problem and told me to wait another 15 minutes so they can fix something in the computer of the car. my concern is, if they knew there were some issues with their 2005 or 2006 corollas, they should have notified the customers to prevent dangerous things to happen. and why would the car with only 32k miles on it suddenly stops in the middle of the freeway? it would be a different story if the mileage is over 100k. *tr
Ecm (engine control module) is defective. car loses power and sometimes dies while driving, also the transmission shifts very hard going into each gear. a search on the internet finds that this is a common issue with many toyota models for 2006-2007. dealer has offered a warranty fix for cars still under factory warranty only. this is a serious and potentially deadly issue and is due to a defective part , not normal wear and tear. this issue should have resulted in a recall a long time ago! its time that our government watchdogs start protecting the consumer, not the corporations. *tr
Car engine suddenly stalls or looses power when driving , could have been a very serious accident. transmission shifts very hard. *tr
I recently encountered a power loss while i was driving my 2006 toyota corolla, the opposite of the acceleration problem that is in the news. after stopping to fill up the car with gasoline, i could only get the car to go about 5 to 10 miles an hour when i used the acceleration pedal. despite using the hazard lights, i was concerned that someone was going to ram into the car as i limped into a garage to have the car looked at. the vehicle had to be towed to the nearest toyota dealer who uncovered (after a computerized system check) an internal ecu failure...some sort of computer circuit failure. the only advanced warning about a computer failure that i can recall receiving occurred earlier in the morning when i noticed the dashboard lights weren't working right. the ecu was replaced by the dealer. i do not have the old part. *tr
Driving at normal speed in traffic the check engine light appeared and the engine lost power. in los angeles traffic this can be deadly. i was nearly rear ended twice due to the inability to even have the car roll to a safe stop. the problem has been diagnosed as a known ecm failure and many owner forums have said this is a widely known and common failure. *tr
2006 and other years of toyota corolla. ecm defect causes had shifting of transmission and has resulted in sudden loss of all power when driving. cases of this problem are widely reported on the internet by owners of these vehicles but no action has been taken by the nhtsa to order a recall or to hold the company liable to repair these vehicles. where is the focus of the nhtsa??? *tr
While making a left turn, my gas pedal locked and the check engine light came on. i had to coast to the side of the road just pass a very busy intersection. my car was towed to the local toyota dealer where they determined the electronic control unit (ecu or computer) shut down and needed to be replaced. my car has 83,000 miles, 3,000 miles over the 8yr/80,000 mile federal emissions warranty. this is a dangerous and expensive error that toyota should take responsibility to correct. *tr
Toyota corolla 2006 model with engine light on after driving 5 miles. car was diagnosed with a fault of p2716 by a certified mechanic. light disappeared for about twelve hours than reappeared and was constant from that time on. the car seemed to have hard shifting while driving slowly between 10- 30 mph. *tr

I own a 2006 toyota corolla. on 01-29-2010, i was driving my toyota down the road. suddenly, without warning, the engine stalled. luckily, i was not on the freeway or in heavy traffic and was able to safely pull to the side of the road. i ended up having my car towed to toyota of el cajon where the problem was identified as a defective ecm (engine control module). they replaced the ecm for $841.00 which fixed the problem. an ecm failing on a new car after 3 1/2 years is very unusual (they are engineered to last the life of the car). i went on line and was stunned to find that ecm failures were a known problem and frequently failed on 2006 and some earlier toyota corollas. toyota even changed/re-engineered the ecms after 2006 models. i would like to know how many of these ecms have failed nation wide and why no recall has been done to fix this problem. i've tried to get ahold of toyota corporate but i can't get through to a person and they have not answered my e-mail back (going on two weeks since i sent it to them). *tr
Electronic control module failed. check engine light came on and the car stopped running after about 5 minutes in the garage.. i was able to repeat this. towed to the dealer where they replaced the ecm (or computer). *tr
I was driving down the interstate with my 3yr old son when my cars check engine light popped on and the car turned off and immediately started slowing down. it was night time and after a large snow storm so i was unable to get off the shoulder fully. luckily a police officer came and said i was in a very dangerous position and that she was going to speed up the process by calling a tow agency herself. she then cornered her car with lights on to add some safety. i had the car towed to a repair shop where they stated nothing was physically wrong with the car but the computer had died. i called toyota to see if there was anything that they could do and they stated they were aware this was a standard problem but since the car was over 80,000 miles that it was no longer under warranty and would be full price to fix. i stated that i felt when i purchased the car they needed to inform me that after 80,000 miles my car had the potential to shut down at anytime. i can assure you i would not have purchased it. i had to order a new part which is still not guaranteed. i feel that this is a scam by toyota to ensure that they are still making money on cars even when you take the best of care. *tr
Tl*the contact owns 2006 toyota corolla. the contact stated that his vehicle shut off at a traffic light and would not restart. the vehicle was towed to a mechanic and later towed to a toyota dealer. the dealer informed the contact that the failure was a chip in the electrical system which needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired under the warranty. the failure mileage was 45,000. updated 03/12/10. *lj updated 07/09/10*jb

The check engine light comes on and then the engine dies. this has happened twice so far and the ecm were changed by toyota on both occasions but it just happened a third time and i am fed up. *tr
