Problems with 2016 Jeep Cherokee ENGINE

On average, the 2016 Jeep Cherokee starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 35 898 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2016 Jeep Cherokee

I have a 2016 jeep cherokee latitude with 33,000 miles on it. the vehicle stalled while driving about 20 mph on a city street. the engine shut off without any warning, causing me to become stuck in the middle of a busy road, nearly causing a collision. the dashboard made a dinging noise, and stated the message "please return to park, then choose desired gear". after putting the vehicle in park, i was able to restart the engine. after researching this problem, it is clear that this is a common issue related to oil levels in the jeep cherokee. the nhtsa should launch an investigation into this dangerous engine issue that affects the safety of the vehicle.

I brought the jeep new in 2016 and now it has shut off on me while driving in traffic with no power. this is scary. while driving, i get warning tones emitted from the vehicle with no message displayed. this has happened to me 3 times so far and i'm afraid to drive the vehicle now always thinking it will shut off without warning. i contacted jeep today (6/3/18) and they said they haven't heard of the issue. i searched online and found numerous complaints about the same issue. i need this situation to be documented in the event something catastrophic happens to me while driving the vehicle. i feel a lot of anxiety always feeling the car will shut off in traffic and get rear ended. please feel free to contact me regarding this situation.

Bought car august 2016, first noticed severe jolt/kick august 2017. it appeared randomly. so severe that the first 10 or so times i really thought i was rear ended. when traveling around 40-45 mph car jolts/kicks/jumps/drops (pick your term) when the car shifts gears. doesn't happen every time, mostly when traffic is creeping along.and noticed that the car idled very roughly out of the driveway just before the check engine light came on all three times. dealership resets computer then says they can't replicate issue, i've taken it in 3 times now for these issues with no real resolution. they are replacing valve body this time, my car is under two years old and i do not feel safe driving it anywhere.

Two issues (may be related) first safety issue is when driving in higher gears and gas is not maintained the transmission cuts off and it can only idle with rpms able to go as high as 2000 rpms without being able to gain speed. the second issue is that when using cruise control the vehicle will increase speed without adjusting when going down a grade to speeds well over cruising speed. both issues happen while driving on highway.

The vehicle shut off on my wife and child while she was driving it on the highway, and we took it to the dealership and they said it was low on oil and they did an oil consumption test and cleared the vehicle and said it was a common problem and they have to do oil consumption test before chrysler will issue a replacement motor, after 2 months of the test they concluded that it was ok and safe to drive. the issue happend again with my wife and child in the car and driving down the road, she made it back home and the motor was out of oil 3,000 miles before her next oil change. i got it to the dealer and they said they have to do the oil consumption test process again.

Several times now in the past few months when i start to accelerate, the jeep "jumps". almost like its slipping or trying to jump gears. it's very scary, and i'm afraid of it jumping when i least expect it and cause an accident which i do not need in my condition. and i just recently realized that the start/stop function has not been working, which i believe may have something to do with it,i asked my dealer to check it and they gave me the run around. then someone over heard me talking and said they had the same problem. so i googled it and there has been several complaints for the exact same thing all over the i internet! what does it take to have this seriously checked out for a recall? how many complaints on the same issue does it take for something to be done? i am disabled and cannot afford to replace a transmission that's only 2 yrs old! and no one should have to especially if it's a defect which it appears to be. please help me with this situation if at all possible. thank you so much,

The car would stall in the middle of the road. this happened before, i took it to the dealership, they told me it was due to low/dirty oil level, they did the oil change and it was fine for a while. this morning the car stalled in the middle of the road, i have about 5,000 miles on the car since last maintenance, but when i checked the oil change indicator, it showed that i still have about 36%.

The check engine light is on once in two weeks. my local dealer in san diego (rancho chrysler jeep dodge) said that there is a problem with engine gas valve. they said it was leaking. each time this is the issue. this is my 4th time going to the dealer. i strongly believe that its very risky for passengers to drive such cars with leaks. i request nhtsa team to please review all jeep cherokee models as they need re-calls and its unsafe for public to drive such leaky vehicles. i was very afraid when i was turning on highway and my car started noise as if something is bursting, it was very frightening moment.

Engine shuts off randomly when stopped. back passenger seats rattle when driving either smith or bumpy roads. squeaking noise comes from the car when the engine is shut off.

Oil does not last during oil changes, i have to add oil. there is not a leak or any issue, it is just burning way too fast. my jeep was cutting off right after i would start driving (usually right after a turn) and i had no idea why until i noticed oil was extra low. so now i just make sure to keep it full between changes. definitely feel like this is a nuisance.

While driving the engine cut out. i drifted to the side of the road, put it in park and restarted it. there wasn't any message there was a problem. it was fine for a couple of days and then while driving to work the same thing happen again. i was able to get to the side without being hit. on checking the internet it showed others had the same problem and was related to oil. . checked oil and it was low. i took it to the dealership and they confirmed the 2.4 cuts off even if the vehicle is in motion with no warning when oil is low. no one ever told me this. had i been on a busier multi lane road i may have been involved in an accident. i have never needed to check my oil between service on a newer car before this is an unsafe default to low oil. it puts the driver and public in danger. had i been told the vehicle may shut off while i was driving i would never have bought the car. i cant believe that they are allowed to have this as a feature with no warning.

Car stalled while driving on busy roads in chicago on two separate occasions. first time i was less than a mile from home on my way to work, car stalled out at a stop light and took 3-4 failed attempts to restart. car was making unusual noise while failing to restart. second time was later in the day on the way home from work during rush hour. on a 45mph road crossing through an intersection the jeep stalled out. no codes, nothing. just stopped working in the middle of a busy intersection. this is a terribly designed 'safety feature'. brought vehicle to dealer and was told i was low on oil. they tried to play it off like it was my fault but i insisted on a oil consumption test, came back after 1000 miles and my car has now been in the shop for 9 weeks after they claimed there was nothing wrong. jeep needs to buy this vehicle back i'm sick of dealing with a brand new piece of trash

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving, the oil level became low and the vehicle stalled without warning. the failure occurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to siemans chrysler dodge ram jeep (8691 red arrow hwy, bridgman, mi 49106) and the contact was advised to add oil to the vehicle every 1,000 miles to keep it from running low. the manufacturer was also contacted and did not assist. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 15,000. *tt updated 12/13/18*jb

My jeep cherokee sport 2016 got stuck in a gear and would not shift. the service transmission light came on and the gas pedal would not do anything. it happened 5 times on my way home from a road trip and was very dangerous. the jeep apparently needs a software update and i believe i shouldn't have to pay for that. the vehicle only has 30k miles on it.

I was driving to town and the low oil presser light came on i get off the road then my car died i was not able to restart it. i checked the oil and it was empty? i put 2 quarts of oil in it and them it stated right up. i took it to the car lot the next day and there was only 1 quart of oil in it. at this time i had only drove it 23 miles since i had put the oil in there, they told me there was not any leaks and that they would fill it up and for me to come back in a week. i really hope that i can make it a week with the oil they put in there i have set the millage thing in the car to 0 and i will see how many miles i drive and if it is out of oil when i go back.

The automatic lighting had been switching between day and night mode for a couple of days. then while driving, without warning, the car came to a stop and gave a message "you must be in park before shifting gears". the engine then stopped. this occurred in a rotary, luckily on a quiet street. after a couple of minutes, i was able to start the car and it appeared fine.

When going down incline the engine and rpms gauge surge up and down.

My car won't start intermittently and completely shut off stopped at a traffic light. it started after 15 minutes of being in the fast lane with my flashers on which was extremely dangerous. i could have been hit easily. this problem is occuring among a lot of customers of jeep. they need to be accountable.

While stopped at an intersection, the vehicle stalled. all light went off and brake pedal stuck down. i put car in park and turned key. tried to restart vehicle and nothing started... light just came on the dash with every item flicking. the brake pedal was still stuck down. if i out the car in neutral, unable to push vehicle and unable to remove parking break. keep in mind i'm at a very heavy traffic intersection. took about 5 minutes until the car told me to press break to release parking break . i turned the key and the vehicle started again. now i am afraid this will happen every time i come to a stop. my car has 19300 miles.... nothing to this extent should be going wrong.

I was driving down a city street on my way home from work and my car just shut off! it had 14500 miles on it when this happened. the system had just started telling me the oil was due to be changed, it was going to be the 4th oil change. after 15 minutes the car just restarted like nothing had happened. after a little google searching i decided to check the oil and the dipstick had just a slight trace of oil..i called the dealer questioned them and was told they have never heard of this problem. i have not taken it in for service since they just say they can't duplicate the problem. i now check my oil every 2000 miles so it doesn't run low causing an engine problem that will be my fault.

Today, february 1, 2018 i was driving on a straight road and my 2016 jeep cherokee and it shut off in the middle of me driving it. i was on a busy street in my town and almost got t-boned by another car. i am 5 months pregnant and this is a major safety concern. i fearful to step back into my vehicle and drive it.

Engine thermostat went bad around 60,000 miles. the engine would not warm up to temperature on cold days and would not stay cool enough on warm days. the engine light came on and the engine didn't sound like it should when running. the thermostat had to be replaced, costing almost $500 for a fix that shouldn't have cost that much.

Since my previous complaint, 11048717 i was denied a buy back by fca, llc via first class mail stating i was not eligible under ga lemon law regardless of it being out of service more than 30 days. since this letter the vehicle has died 3 times while in motion and continues to skip along with a decrease in rpms while idling (observed my dealership service). i also had smoke and a strong odor coming from the left front side of the vehicle with no reason as to why. this car is dangerous and i cannot believe there has not been a total recall since it is shutting off while driving for so many people.

My car is a 2016 jeep cherokee and only has 44,000 miles on it. i keep up with my maintenance. my check engine light came on and my heat isn't working properly. we took it to the dealership in mobile, al this morning and they are saying my warranty for this is up. it's $400 plus dollars to fix and i searched online and other people with this same vehicle are having this problem. this is obviously unfair to consumers. please look into this matter.

I came to a complete stop at a red light. the brake and gas pedals were frozen in place and the elictrical equipment on the dash went haywire for a moment. the message center then showed the message "start stop system unavailable/ please return to park, then choose desired gear." i was able to turn on my flashers, but despite shifting to park and to drive several times the transmission would not engage. the engine did not seem to be running. i had to turn the car off and then on with the key several times before the engine turned over. the same thing happened at the next two stop lights. i drove about three miles past the third stoplight, and the same thing happened but while i was driving in motion on a highway at about 55 mph. there was no shoulder. it was terrifying. i turned on my flashers and came to a full stop coasting with no brakes and no ability to shift gears. i turned the car off and on with the key again and the car seemed "fine." i used the dash button to turn off the auto-off mechanism and drove the last ten miles home without incident. i'm not sure whether the ess system is related to the malfunction, however the error message and result of turning it off suggests it is. i still have a message that says "service auto on off system." calling dealership today.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving 20 mph, the vehicle stalled and all the warning indicators illuminated. the contact attempted to restart the vehicle, but was unsuccesful. the contact stated that the vehicle was able to restart later and was able to be driven. in addition, when the vehicle was in reverse, at a stop light, or at a stop sign, it would stall and all the warning indicators would illuminate. the vehicle was taken to thompson chrysler dodge jeep ram (126 forni rd, placerville, ca 95667, (530) 621-0100) where it was diagnosed, but no failure code could be found. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. the approximate failure mileage was 30,500.

2016 jeep cherokee has twice stalled while driving about 30 mph. lose all power. first time , 21,218 miles, dealer said probably low on oil, but oil change was not overdue and no indicator lights ever showed. they did oil change and then checked car at next oil change, they didn't find anything. at 30,930 miles, car stalled again driving 30 mph out of nowhere. barely able to get to side of road. extremely dangerous situation. dealer again said oil issue and we are advised to return to dealer in 1000 miles to do an oil consumption test. in researching this issue it seems that this is an ongoing issue that no one seems to get resolved. dealer says they have not heard of issue, but a simple google search shows this is not an isolated issue.

Excessive oil consumption. to protect itself, the engine will shut down without warning, no oil or engine lights. this has happened several times in one year. the most recent sept. 27, 2017 was when i was in traffic on a side street in worcester ma.. it took 5 men to physically push my car to the side of the road to prevent an accident from happening. unacceptable. after having a tune up in mid-july 2017, the car dip stick in late september was dry. after towing the vehicle to the nearest dealer i found out it took 4 quarts of oil. i believe this is an excessive amount. i am now going to have to check every 500 to 1,000 miles not to mention the higher cost to purchase synthetic oil. the

My 2016 jeep cherokee started having issues. on my way home from work the service transmission message popped up on my display and engine light came on and had absolutely no acceleration capability. managed to stay with traffic and proceed to the off ramp to a gas station. i followed what it's said on owner manual: turn off the car and turn on the car while on natural for few minutes and the message went away but the engine light was there for a while and got turned off it self. but the next day same issue happened again. i took the car to jeep dealership, they did not have a transmission specialist to check the car. i had to make an appointment with another dealership, the appointment is for tomorrow. interesting is the manual says after resetting should not drive the car because it might cause engine problems, and should have dealer to check but the dealers don't check the car right-away they give you appointment for few days later or a week later. i had this car for year and half i drive 3 miles from home to work i don't understand why the car should have a transmission problem at this early stages. i don't feel safe driving this car. not happy at all!

I was driving down the road at 75 miles per hour when she vehicle stopped working . the engine was running but i couldnt press the gas brakes nor did the steering work. a week before that my car wouldnt crank. i have been telling the shop 2 times prior something wasnt right with the transmission. also has had 2 recalls repaired. *tt *dt *js *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while the vehicle was stationary, it stalled and an abnormal clicking noise was heard. the contact mentioned that the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the engine was misfiring. the vehicle was taken to another independent mechanic where the contact was informed that he could not repair the vehicle because the failure was a manufacturer issue. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and recommended the vehicle be taken to a dealer. the failure mileage was 88,000.

On march 3/9/2017 i purchased a 2016, jeep cherokee limited 4x4, 2.4l with 20,111. at the time of the purchase, i received a 109-point vehicle inspection report, and i personally checked the fluid levels. on may 27, 2017, the oil light flashed when turning into the home depot. i immediately, parked and turned off the car. after inspection, i checked the oil, and there was no evidence of oil on the dip stick. the jeep's mileage was 24,211 miles, which is only 4,100 miles since purchasing the vehicle. having learned that no oil was registering on the dip stick, i opened up the hood and looked for signs of an oil leak? no oil leak was visible from the engine compartment and no oil leakage was found under the jeep. i then drove to the nearest retailer and purchased 5 qt container of 0w-20, full synthetic motor oil. after returning to the jeep, i started adding oil, one quart at a time, and checking the level of the oil between adding intervals. after adding one quart, i could just see evidence of oil on the dip stick. it took 3.5 quarts before the dip stick registered full. at that point i turned on the vehicle. all of the normal dash board diagnostic lights flashed on/off and the car exhibited no sustained warning lights. no sustained engine light or oil light were visible and the jeep appeared to be running normally. no blue or black exhaust was visible from the jeep's tail pipe. after arriving home, i promptly changed the oil and oil filter with the 0w-20, full synthetic castrol motor oil and a fram tough guard filter. the discarded oil was black. from under the jeep, there was no sign of an oil leak around the oil filter, the oil pan or anywhere inside of the skid shield under the jeep?

Jeep randomly shuts down while driving and steering wheel locks up. engine is getting replaced for the second time in 18 months.

My car ja a 2016 and it has shut off while driving 3 times, i was almost rear ended this last time, and it took a bit to start again. i have already taken it to dealer and they said it was a software update... and they updated it but it's doing it again. i have been reading and there's is more online complaints about this same issue and all get the same response that they don't know what's causing it and they only do a software update if that... what needs to happen before they recall or repair this issue, i don't feel safe driving this vehicle anymore but i have no choice i have to drive to work and have no other vehicle, i feel my life is in danger every time i'm driving it, how many people's lives will jeep continue putting in danger until they resolve the issue or recall their this car. a simple we don't know and take your car back doesn't make me feel like they are concerned about my safety, they already sold the car so now it's our problem? i pay a lot of money for this car for it to not be reliable and to feel my life at risk. what are my options? how can i have a reliable car again? i have a 2016 relatively new car and there's no reason i should be having this problems with a new car so either i got a lemon or their whole line is faulty but i don't think my life should be at risk and they need to resolve this issue. i'm tired of hearing we don't know what the issue is and it might just be a software, even if it's just the software then the car shutting off on is shouldn't be their way of letting us know we need to take it in for an update. please make this company resolve this issue before any fatalities occur due to this issue. my car was in motion approaching a stop light when the engine stopped and wouldn't start up again for almost a minute, the other time i was driving at slow speed at a mall parking lot, the other time driving down a street. thank you

Returning home from 1st oil change since purchase of vehicle (2016 jeep cherokee sport) 3 months prior, owner noticed smoke coming from hood immediately upon parking vehicle at residence. as soon as owner exited vehicle, owner noticed flames coming from bottom of engine. owner called 911. three minutes later when emergency vehicles arrived, car was engulfed in flames and was deemed a total loss by fire investigator and insurance company.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving 45 mph, the rpms increased after the vehicle was slowed down. also, the vehicle shook after it accelerated. the vehicle was taken to sun land park dodge chrysler jeep ram (950 crockett st, el paso, tx 79922) on four separate occasions to be repaired, but the failure recurred while still under warranty. the manufacturer was not contacted. the diagnosis information was not available. the failure mileage was 10,000.

It has an oil consumption issue. it burns a quart of oil every 1000 miles. it takes 5 quarts of oil and the oil change is every 5000 miles so by the time it needs an oil change there is no oil left. it stalled dead on me while i was driving because it had no oil. i had no advanced warning it just stopped in the middle of the street. i have done 7 oil consumption tests and jeep is telling me it is "jeep standard" and they will not fix it.

Engine is using excessive amounts of oil. using 1.25-1.5 quarts of oil per 1,000 miles. engine has shut off while driving on highway on 2 occasions. when engine oil is low it does not shift properly. first engine was replaced with a new one and the replacement engine is also using excessive amounts of oil. advised by dealership to let new motor break in and come back after break in period of 7,500 miles. owners manual states that this vehicle does not require a long break in period as dealership stated.

The jeep stalled in the middle of the intersection! several times and once as i was exiting the freeway ! the service transmission light went on and then i received the jeep back nine days later and the the engine rattles and the console cracking sounds themotor sound like it's running higher than before it was fix i took it back the service manger told me that it runs fine and i need to relax and enjoy the arts but i don't think it working like it was prior to breaking down ! it had 6949 miles on it and now the shocks seem to hit hard too ! so i not sure what's going on ! jeep corporate told me to drive it but i don't feel safe ! i asked for a better jeep! and i was told that things happen ! the service department won't look at it agian ! and the jeep seems to be pulling to the left ! but the steering wheel looks aligned!

Accellerating from a stop to get on the highway and engine shut down. had to stop in the middle of a busy intersection to put it in park, remove and re-insert key, and restart. almost got rear ended in the process. took vehicle to the dealership immediately after (saturday), they have had it all week - said they have driven it every day and have been unable to replicate the problem. today is thursday and they are asking me to pick it up. wiring is secure, battery is fine, there is no trace in the vehicle's computer that there was ever an issue.

Purchased vehicle on 12/14/2015. on 1/25/17, at 17,000 miles the vehicle stalled while driving through an intersection. it was raining heavily and causing a traffic issue. law enforcement had to be called to re-direct traffic. since the first stall, the vehicle has been to the local dodge/jeep dealership four times for the same issues (4/20/17, 8/18/17, 3/25/18 and 12/4/18). they have replaced coils, filters and explained the engine will shut down if it senses low oil. they continue to state the oil consumption as the reason for the stalls. they have no solution but to bring the vehicle in every 1000k miles to check the oil. the vehicle stalled again on 12/25/18. luckily, i was in a parking lot and the vehicle behind me was going slow enough to stop. if not, i would have been hit with my toddler in the vehicle. usually it takes several hours for the vehicle to start again but on this incident the vehicle started within 5 minutes. the vehicle is now showing a "service shifter" and the dealer stated it needed a new battery. i replaced the battery and the "service shifter" was back on within 15 days of replacing the battery. this vehicle is a safety hazard.

Driving through a parking lot, jeep turned off but i could still steer and brake. had to stop completely, put it in park, remove and re-insert key for it to restart. started with no hesitation, no lights or anything came on. *tr

In cold temperatures my vehicle doesn't heat properly. noticed that in my climate control setting that strictly goes to the floor it has no force, and sounds like it blows on the windshield but doesn't. service advisor indicated that is the problem but no correction for issue currently available.

I was driving 50mph and my jeep completely shut down - 0 mph, 0 rpm, but i could still steer and brake. no lights, no warning. pulled into a neighborhood, had to put it in park, remove the key and put it back in to get it to do anything again. restarted with no hesitation. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 16v907000 (engine and engine cooling); however, the part for the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the contact had not experienced a failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. parts distribution disconnect.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that the vehicle would not start after being parked overnight. the dealer was unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vin was invalid. the failure mileage was 2,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving approximately 10 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact came to a complete stop. the vehicle restarted normally. the dealer diagnosed that the oil level was too low and the engine stalled. the contact also stated that the engine was replaced because the failure recurred six other times. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 29,000.

Problem began with the car bucking significantly after changing gears. then, when the car was in drive (but foot was on the brake), car would start to buck again, transmission slowed, car would not accelerate, kept bucking and lights in car dimmer. had to keep restarting the car to get it to keep going. but, once i used the brake again, the bucking and loss of acceleration would start all over again. dealer continues to state that the computer in the car is not registering any problems at all. has been in the dealer 3 times over the last 3 weeks. this all happened when the vehicle is in motion, on any kind of street or highway, whenever the gear begins to cause bucking after changing.

My 2016 jeep cherokee latitude caught fire, behind the engine, while i was driving it. i was able to extinguish the fire with the help of two-three bystanders and the fire department. there was a police report taken. while there is a recall for a auto rear-lift gate, my jeep cherokee does not have that feature and the fire started and was located below the vehicle and right behind the engine. *tr
