Problems with 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 55 783 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2015 GMC Sierra 1500

Brakes fade at low speeds, vehicle continues to travel while the brakes are applied. hard brake pedal pressure must be applied to stop.

Brake pedal or that increased effort is needed to depress the brake pedal. also, in some cases a tick or ticking noise may be heard, which may sound like an exhaust manifold leak.

Several times at low speed maneuvering the brake pedal became hard, required increased effort to depress, and braking distances were increased. occurs randomly and without warning. no accidents yet, but several close calls. vehicle has only 44,000 miles.

Brake pedal goes soft and can hit the floor on occasion. mostly happens with in reverse. 40k miles. also transmission shifts are erratic. rpm can shoot up between shifts.

At low speeds break pedal will not depress and i have a hard time stopping the truck. i almost hit a car yesterday and after doing some research found that the vacuum pump failure is a known problem. this is extremely scary and dangerous. someone could easily hit a pedestrian. my truck has less than 50,000 miles, which seems to be the average for this problem.

I was on a major highway traveling when the traffice became stop and go. as i was traveling in heavy traffic for about 5 minutes, my brake became stiff and would not allow me to stop as normal. i was able to stop just short of rear-ending the vehicle in front of me, however it was merely by inches. considerations : i was on a slight decline and my vehicle has start assist where the brake pedal remains stiff when in effect, it felt like this activated. i continued to increase pressure through which i thought i heard the abs activate and the vehicle stopped.

At slow speeds the brake assist does not work. requires much more effort to stop vehicle. seems related to faulty vacuum pump as mentioned by ohters on internet forums.

When applying brakes after first push the pedal gets hard and doesn't stop hardly. does it either going forward or reverse. has happened numerous times since truck was bought new.

Break pedal at low speeds locks up completely.

There is a known brake problem caused by faulty vacuum pump. with the vacuum pump failing there will be loss of assisted braking. some people have noted requiring 2 feet to stomp on the brakes to stop the truck. the dangerous braking problem seems to happen during low speeds. some members on the forums have mentioned getting into accidents. gmc does not cover the vacuum pump under their warranty which is ridiculous. i have listed some forum threads as proof of not just me having this issue. https://www.silveradosierra.com/ecotec3-5-3l-v8/brake-booster-vacuum-pump-failure-t686609.html https://www.silveradosierra.com/brakes/rock-hard-brake-pedal-2014-low-speed-t595097.html https://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/204871-vacuum-pump-going-out/ https://fox6now.com/2018/11/23/gm-under-investigation-for-faulty-brake-vacuum-pumps/ even the government is investigating.

When the truck's vacuum pump fails, the brake pedal becomes very hard to push. the truck does not stop at low speed when this happens. the first time this happened, i was backing into a parking space at christmas tree stand. i nearly backed into the tent and persons loading the christmas tree in the truck. the second time this happened, i was parking my truck in driveway. i rolled about 6' to 8' before stopping. i nearly hit my house. gm issues a "special warranty" but they refuse to cover the repairs because of the vehicle mileage. this same issue is well documented by other gm truck owners for 2014 to 2018 model years.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 gmc sierra 1500. while driving 1-10 mph, the brake pedal was difficult to depress and failed to stop the vehicle. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the local dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000.

I was driving down a hill at about 15 miles an hour and when i went to press the brake pedal i heard a noise and the brake pedal went to the floor and truck would not stop. i had to swerve off the road to avoid a collision. after, the brake pressure returned while driving, but when stopped it would lose pedal feel and go back to the floor. after reading articles it was obvious the vacuum pump was failing. i limped the truck home and took it to the dealership and am waiting to hear back.

Brake pump went out almost ran into a pole. reading online and see a lot of people having the same problem. angry!!

It started happening a week or so ago where when in reverse or after switching from reverse to drive and trying to brake the pedal wouldn't compress, it was as if they were locking up on me. i would have to put most of my body weight on the pedal to even get the truck to stop, to the point where i almost ran into my neighbors car backing out of the driveway. it seemed to mainly happen at slower speeds, in both drive and reverse as it happened on more than one occurrence. luckily i decided to take it to the gmc dealer before anything serious happened, but this is a huge safety concern and i feel it needs to be addressed. the dealer also knew exactly what the issue was before i could give them any information, so it seems like this is a common problem. they replaced my vacuum pump and we will see if that fixes the problem.

Brake assist warning light came on with hard brake pedal at low speed braking. does not happen ofter. brought to dealer and had tested with no trouble found. dealer said no recalls or service bulletins on issue.

When backing up, after repeatedly pressing the brake pedal, the brake pedal went to the floor and would not stop the truck. the truck rolled uncontrollably down the driveway and luckily did not hit anyone or anything. it could have killed someone though. the same issue occurred in a parking lot when backing up in an open space. after repeated hitting the brake pedal to line up the vehicle, the brakes stopped working an i could no longer stop the truck.

While driving at slow speeds, the brake pedal became very hard to push. this caused the truck to be difficult to stop, which caused me to almost rear-end the vehicle in front of me. this has happened several times. in response to this, the gmc dealer replaced the vacuum pump.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 gmc sierra 1500. while driving 25 mph, the contact heard a grinding noise emerging from the front driver side of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to hennessy buick gmc (7261 jonesboro rd, morrow, ga 30260) where it was diagnosed that the brake vacuum pump needed replacement. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 8-4881978797. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 102,000.

Vehicle's brakes become stiff at low rpm causing difficulties stopping.

When driving forward or backwards at low speed brake pedal seems like it locks up and it is extremely hard to stop the vehicle i had to press the parking brake a couple times just to get it to stop

On several occasions the brake pedal becomes difficult to depress. releasing the pedal and depressing again corrects the problem. today while exiting a parking space at low speed to avoid collidiong with ann approaching vehicle it took both feet to depress pedal. i am a 200 lb. male. i am not sure a small female could have corrected the failure in a timely manner.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 gmc sierra 1500. while driving 15-25 mph, the brake pedal was depressed, but was difficult to slow down or stop the vehicle efficiently. the contact stated that the brake pedal was very stiff. the vehicle was taken to kunes country chevrolet buick gmc of elkhorn (located at 1350 wi-67, elkhorn, wi 53121, (262) 725-4068) where it was diagnosed that the vacuum pump was weak. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 68,800. *tt consumer stated vehicle was repaired. *jb

At slow speeds from a stop if you let off the break pedal and immediatly reapply there seems to be extremely hard breaking. almost impossible to stop the car.

I first noticed the problem when i was backing down the ramp to launch my boat. generally i can lightly touch the brakes and the truck will stop immediately. but this time it did not and i had to pump my brakes multiple times before it finally came to a stop. i was quit alarmed but kinda blew it off. the truck had traveled about six feet further than i had anticipated. about a week later i stopped to go through my gate at my farm and when i drove through the gate which is on a slight hill decline it happened again. i went to touch the brakes to stop and ended up pumping the brakes violently in order to get the truck to stop. this time i traveled about seven or eight feet before coming to a full stop. after this incident i was convinced to take it to the dealership. it occurred once more during that time. the dealership said it was a malfunction in the vacuum pump that works off of the main engine and oil from the engine had contaminated the braking system. i had to have replaced a pump, booster, cylinder, pipe, and fluid for a total of 1266.33 dollars. that invoice number is 208452. i feel this is a serious safety issue when you think your vehicle is going to stop and it does not. this can cause a panic situation!

I pulled into a parking spot and lost the ability to stop my truck. the brakes locked up and i couldn't push down on the brake pedal hard enough to get the truck to stop. i was going slow enough to use the curb in the spot for it to stop me from hitting anything. i had my car towed to a repair shop and they confirmed that the brake vacuum pump failed and had to be replaced along with the master cylinder and because the vacuum pump was the initial point of failure, the repair was not covered under my warranty.*dt vehicle repaired *jb

Brakes become very hard to press in traffic and while backing up. the condition worsens with multiple presses of the brake pedal. the stopping distance of the truck in increased even with increased pressure on the pedal. the truck has 28,463mi. i contacted a dealership and they will not cover this repair. i have ordered the parts and will perform the repair myself. gm has issued a service bulletin on this pit5361b.

Stopped to take a break while traveling. as we went to exit the parking area and stop at the stop sign, no real braking power. had to put both feet on the pedal and press into it to come to a stop. we were traveling at about two mph. no warning there was a problem. one minute we had good brakes, the next, not. luckily there was no traffic, as we were unable to stop at the stop sign and finally came to a stop in the right lane if the road. the mechanic stated the reed in the valve of the pump came apart.

On november 17th 2018 my brakes went out on a 2015 gmc 1500 at 35 mph stopping at a red light which just turned green .i switched lanes and almost crashed. i had my grandchildren in the vehicle along with my wife. the vehicle need to be towed to a gmc dealer. the diagnoses was the vacuum pump total failure the brake pedal was hard with no stopping power. my gmc had 34000 miles on it . now i have a tow bill and repair cost for a part gm will not recall. this was reported to gm and they opened a case and closed it. the said they would give a hundred dollar coupon. this is ridiculous some one is going to get killed because of this faulty part. i thought they would be will to help and make things right . gm case 8-4845403712 thanks this corporation needs to be responsible.

Hard brake pedal - "no brakes" first occurrence in paring lot 2016 timeframe . was backing into a spot that was slightly downhill, no brakes , vehicle hit curb and stopped. pulled forward no brake, eventually they came back . complained to gm hotline - they responded with questions and i told them i took truck to dealer, i believe dealer replaced master cylinder second occurrence may 2017 driving on i-75 - 18 year old daughter driving on way home from college, traffic slowed and she said "i have no brakes, pedal wont move". she maneuvered to side of road, vehicle turned off and then back on, brakes came back and worked ok . mentioned during oil change at serra chevrolet, but since brakes were working they would not investigate third event - november 16-- at tail end of 8 hour drive returning from deer camp. exit freeway and in stop and go traffic , on a downhill portion of road, the brake went hard . got vehicle stopped and turned engine off and back on, brakes released. contacted dealer about bringing truck in this week. going to ed rinke dealership today nov 24, i read article about the a faulty brake vacuum pump. this now makes sense. please get this issue fixed

Brake system failure. brake pedal would depress to the floor and stop working as the truck was slowing down. this would happen in all braking situations. i took the truck to the dealership and they stated the vacuum pump failed. $1142.67 for repair! nov 15/ 2018.

Complete brake failure with no warnings. dealer diagnostic reports frozen vacuum pump. the condition was encountered in motion on a county rd.

Brake vacuum pump booster. first started when driving under 5 mph. the brakes were hard to push down and would not stop the truck properly. did this for approximately 3 months. then driving getting off the interstate and applied brakes going 60 mph the brakes would not work. could barley stop. same issue has when driving slow. now the brakes will not work at any speed. they truck is undrivable until it gets fixed.

I first noticed the issue on the morning of saturday, november 10th as i was backing into a parking spot. as i was backing in, i noticed all of a sudden the brake pedal was on the floor and i was about to plow into a curb and threw the truck in park. i didn't think anything of it. the second time it happened was one day later as my fiance and i had just completed a 200 mile drive home. i was pulling into the parking lot at our townhouse complex and as i was pulling forward to back into the space, i noticed i had no braking power whatsoever. i had to throw the truck in park to keep it from hitting a neighbors vehicle. i opened the hood with the engine running, and noticed a ticking noise i hadn't heard before and my brake pedal only had about 1/4" of travel left. i could pull the pedal back to where it is supposed to be but it would just fall back down to the floor. i was able to very slowly and carefully park the truck using park and the parking brake. with the engine still running and the vehicle in park, i depressed what was left of the brake pedal and held it to the floor and heard a moaning noise coming from the area near the master brake cylinder and could feel the brake pedal shuddering under my foot. i feel unsafe driving this vehicle and i was giving no warning of the brake failure. i am having the vehicle towed to sewell buick gmc in dallas and will update when they find cause. i will also be calling gm customer support as i feel this is a huge safety hazard.

Truck looses braking ability at low speeds such as traffic or parking lots.

When going under 15mph brake pedal becomes hard and doesn't work. vehicle has 50k miles. brake booster declared bad by mechanic. this issue almost casued accident.

In stop and go traffic on highway at low speed experienced brake pedal stiffening and difficulty stopping. reoccurred several times during same traffic pattern but only at the low stop and go speed. problem occurred with no warning. brakes worked as normal under other circumstances. forum research suggested this was a vacuum pump and occurred to other models of same year and millage. vacuum pump (internal) failure was confirmed issue by gm dealer and replaced. mileage when problem occurred was approximately 47,200 miles. vehicle in good condition, no wrecks ,regular maintenance, and not used for towing or heavy hauling.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 gmc sierra 1500. while driving 5 mph, the brakes seized. while driving over 5 mph, the brakes performed normally. the vehicle was taken to baglier buick gmc (248 pittsburg rd, butler, pa 16001, 742-602-4676) where it was diagnosed that the vacuum pump fractured. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 49,000. the vin was unknown. *bf

Issue when braking that causes the brake pedal to lose power and causes the driver to depress the pedal extremely hard to have the brakes engage. the cause appears to be a faulty vacuum pump that requires replacement. this could be potentially a large safety issue if the pump fails and the vehicle is unable to be stopped in time to avoid a possible collision. this issue has occurred both while in traffic on a city street and while attempting to park the vehicle.

The vacuum pump controlling the brakes has failed. when the brake is pressed in stop/go traffic, it will first stop the vehicle, but if the brake is released then pressed again, the brakes will not work and the vehicle continues to roll forward. a mechanical/electrical noise can be heard before this occurs. this is more noticeable on wet roads or roads with a steep decline.

During low speed braking maneuvers while parking in my driveway brake pedal pressure required to stop became very hard. it took both feet on the pedal to actually stop the truck. this would happen daily while backing in to my driveway. also during normal city stop and go driving it would also require great effort to stop the truck and the pedal would be very hard to press.

At slow speed backing up or moving forward, i lose power assist for braking, having to almost stand on the brakes to stop. this happens intermittently. street or parking lot.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 gmc sierra 1500. an independent mechanic called on behalf of the vehicle owner, who is deaf. the contact stated that the brake pedal failed to depress and stop the vehicle properly. the contact diagnosed that the vacuum pump and the brake booster system were malfunctioning. the dealer (gulf coast chevrolet buick gmc, 1901 w. fm 523, angleton, tx 77515, (800) 593-5226) stated that there were no recalls on the vehicle. the manufacturer was called and the contact was provided a case number. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle had too many miles to be covered by the extended warranty. the failure mileage was 69,000.

At low speeds (parking speed, school pickup lines, creeping traffic speed) the brake pedal will lose all boost pressure. the brake pedal becomes extremely stiff and ineffective. this situation occurred on a few occasions and caused great alarm with myself and my wife. great potential exists for an accident involving machinery, animals or human beings. the vehicle was taken promptly to the local gmc dealership for service with a copy of gm service bulletinno.: pit5361b. the dealer kept the vehicle for several days to perform an existing safety recall for steering anomalies (recall # 18289) as well as diagnose and repair the brake boost issue. service bulletin pit5361b was followed and the vacuum pump assembly was replaced to resolve the brake boost issue. this repair occurred at 40728 miles - just beyond warranty coverage terms. total cost of repair $686.56. the brake boost issue has not reoccurred to date since the repair. this vehicle is not abused or involved in any rigorous activity. it is a general use vehicle and is used primarily for family errands and road trips.

Experienced an unusual reaction to breaking. a few days later i had brake warning lights on the dash. took the vehicle to the dealer and they had to replace the cylinder brake master and the brake booster and add new fluid. which i paid for. now i see there may be other issues as there are other complaints you're investigating. i want to put mine on record.

Hard brake pedal when attempting to stop, happens on hwy with fast speeds, slow speeds in parking garage and in reverse.

Hard pedal, extremely poor braking response while slowing and during parking of vehicle, especially when multiple pedal pumps are required. progressively worsening over past 6 months. i replaced vacuum boost pump and problem was corrected.

While driving at highway speed, i entered an off ramp to find no power assist to my brakes. the pedal was extremely stiff. i came very close to having a collision with the car in front of me. i contacted my mechanic immediately, he checked it out and it appears the vacuum pump has failed without warning. i have owned this vehicle since new and have had no problems with it until this issue.

I was pulling a travel trailer at 55 miles an hour, i came over a hill to an intersection and i had lost my brakes. i managed to finally come to a stop. i disconnected my trailer. i went to a local gmc dealership, and they did not have time to repair my vehicle. i took it to an independent repair shop, and they said my vacuum brake booster pump had failed. they installed a new vacuum breaker booster pump for the next day. this was a very dangerous situation, as i lost 95% of my breaking power while pulling my travel trailer.

Brakes appear to lose boost when stopping. have to press peddle with both feet. this has happened on three separate occasions.
