Problems with 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 67 961 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2014 GMC Sierra 1500

Vacuum pump for power brake assist went out. vehicle only has 58000 miles at the time. i lost power brakes while backing up in a gas station causing me to nearly strike a gas pump. had i not thought fast and depressed my emergency brake i would have struck the pump.

When braking at slow speeds, like when idling in traffic or rolling through a parking lot, when the brake pedal is depressed it is very hard, like when pressing the brake pedal with the vehicles engine off. at times i have had to used both feet to press the brake pedal the try and stop the vehicle. the vehicle is also very hard to stop when this issue occurs.

I have had problems with my brakes for the last 3 years. i already had by brakes fixed my gm because of a bad squeak when pressing on my brakes. i recently just changed my master cylinder because the brake pedal would get stuck on certain occasions when driving. sometimes having me to use the emergency brakes. sometimes i would have the brake pedal all the way down and the truck would still keep moving. it would happen sporadically. most of the time when i am driving in traffic or through a parking lot.

When backing down a steep hill or back a boat down the boat ramp, the brake pedal get hard and the truck doesn't want to stop. driving on a flat surface i haven't had an issue but it is very scary backing the boat into the water feeling the brakes aren't doing its job.

Major safety concern!: hard brakes at low speeds, intermittent stiff brakes in forward and reverse. 2014 gmc sierra slt crew cab 4wd, 40k miles. this is a very serious issue that could result in a collision, damage and/or injury. i have experienced this multiple times since purchasing this truck from the original owner in 2017. it has happened when parking, moving trailers, an maneuvering at low vehicle speeds. the brake pedal suddenly becomes stiff when depressing and has limited or no braking action unless applying extreme amounts of pressure on the brake pedal. i have driven vehicles without power brakes and this is not the same. it is as if the braking system is working against the input of the pedal in addition to the loss of power brake action. the most concerning event was experienced while backing a boat trailer into the water with two children in the back seat, buckled in child restraining car seats and pushing with both feet using all my strength to barely stop the truck and trailer from rolling all the way into the water. this was a true nightmare, and is the reason i am submitting this safety complaint. had my wife been operating the truck or a person with weaker legs in the same situation, the issue could have been severely tragic. i cannot safely operate the vehicle until this is resolved. i am truly disappointed that this hasn't been turned into a recall based on the multitude of complaints on this very same issue. how many close-calls or near-misses does it take before nhtsa and a world-class vehicle manufacturer contain a major safety issue? i hope this issue gets the proper attention and a recall is mandated swiftly, before more people get hurt or worse.

While driving my truck at slow speeds and applying brakes, the brake pedal will get hard and unable to stop vehicle. it has occurred while backing a trailer town hill towards a lake and i was unable to stop the truck only able to have friend block the tire so i could put in drive. it has occurred while approaching stop signs and also frequently in parking lots.

While slowing down at traffic truck felt like it was super heavy and kept going, brake pedal got hard and could not press down. ac went out on me twice do to bad compressor and had to repair at dealer. transmission knocks when slowing down and hard shifts like its going to break. also visibility is poor on vehicle when driving at night as the light are very dim. had to buy alternate lights but still dim.

Very hard brake peddle. limited to no braking ability when condition exists. going slow backing up with trailer, forward going slow. if foot on brake for extended time at stop light braking ability abates, peddle very very hard. brakes unable to stop vehicle no matter how much pressure put on brake peddle.

When slowing down, the brake pedal on the vehicle would become hard to press. once the break pedal became hard, it would take a longer distance to stop the vehicle completely. it happened at slower speeds, for example as i was pulling into a parking lot.

My 2014 gmc sierra is having a major brake issue. i replaced the brake pads after being told the padding was low. this did not fix the problem. my truck does not slow down when braking on a hill. i read in another article that the vacuum pump goes out at a low rpm, causing the truck not to stop. unfortunately, my wife was driving my truck down the driveway, and couldn't stop. this issue almost caused her to hit another vehicle that was passing at the end of the driveway.

Driving at 55 miles per hour lost brake functions. was able to slow down on side of high , and had truck towed to nearest shop. found that vacuum pump and belt were broken . ver concerned that a belt brakes and you can not stop. have reported issie to gmc

While tapping the brakes, the vehicle's headlights will dim. occasionally, while tapping the brakes, the entire dashboard (including the touchscreen) turn off and restart. on 6/18/18, while travelling on a highway at 40 miles an hour and approaching a red light, i applied the brakes and the entire car shut down, including the power steering, power brakes, and engine. i had to place the car into neutral and turn it back on in order to brake in time.

While driving went to stop at service station brakes would not work as they should ,had to push on pedal very very hard to stop almost ran over gasoline pump.dealer says it may be vac leak or pump.very bad situation dangerous gm should repair it my dealer is mitchell buick gmc in san angelo tx

First noticed at about 65000 miles. when braking in stop-and-go traffic or in reverse (especially down an incline such as a boat ramp), the brakes can become very hard to press and non-responsive. this results in long stopping distances. had the truck inspected by dealer and they suggested vacuum pump. after researching this issue, there appears to be a general issue with the vacuum pumps that gm will replace under warranty, but has not recalled....

60k miles. service brake assist light came on after 1 hour drive. at low speeds, brake pedal is extremely difficult to depress (as if no power brakes on antique vehicle), truck does not stop as needed. diagnostic check from onstar does not show any code.

This occurrence happened in the spring of 2018. i had exited the highway after a 25 minute drive and sat in a long line to enter a ballpark. the wait in this slow moving line may have been a half hour. in this half hour, i would let off the brake to roll forward and reapply the brake. it was mostly down hill so the gas pedal was unnecessary. when we payed for parking, we were asked to pull over to the side of the road, pointing in the wrong direction for parking. the vehicle was put in park. after issues were resolved, i put the vehicle in drive and turned around for parking. it was here that i pressed the gas pedal to get back in line, but when i hit the brake as i entered my spot, the brake refused to stop the vehicle. i continued to press the brake, bracing my back against the seat back rest, and could feel us slowing, but not to the degree i was pressing the brake pedal for. no accident occurred and the speed i was slowing down from couldn't have been more than 15 mph. as we entered the parking lot, the problem continued. i could only slow the vehicle by bracing against the brake pedal. i could not get the vehicle to sudden stop from a rolling speed. i reversed into my parking spot, put the vehicle in park, applied the parking brake, and shut off the engine. when i returned from the ball game, i started the vehicle back up, took off the parking brake, put it in drive and tested the brakes in the parking lot. the brakes functioned like normal. depressing the brakes hard would make the vehicle suddenly stop. i have not had this issue since. i have not returned to the ballpark yet, but i have been in traffic jams and been to other entertainment events which would simulate the same situations.

Vacuum system on the breaks are loosing pressure causing the breaks to become nearly impossible to depress. i have run in to my fence causing minor damage. this happened when i was at a snails pace, couldn't imagine it happening at a higher speed gm is aware of the fix but at my cost of over 750.00. there have been numerous complaints to the dealerships and on gm forums. this problem needs to be addressed. i'm glad no one walked in front of me when this happened.

Gm has a major problem with the vacum pump failing on the 2014 and up 1500 series trucks. gm has issued a service bullentin pit5361 for this issue. when the vacum pump fails the brakes become almost impossible to apply. after researching the problem it is a very well known issue that many have had. my gmc started this at about the 49,500 mile spot and has caused me to strike a wall and almost a pedestrian in a parking lot. thankfully i was on my toes and avoided hitting the pedestrian. im a big man at about 265lbs. when the brakes fail to work i cant press the pedal hard enough with both feet to stop the vehicle. im currently waiting on gm to return a call for assistance in fixing the problem as this is a costly fix. braking is a vital and high safety feature on a vehicle. why this hasnt been addressed before a family is killed is beyond me. issuing a service bullentine instead a recall for such a vital part a vehicle is reckless.

While in motion the brake pedal becomes hard, will continue to roll, and makes & feels like the brake pad are grinding.

While tapping the brakes, the vehicle's headlights will dim occasionally. 2 times now while tapping the brakes, the entire dashboard (including the touchscreen) turn off and restart. the first time was travelling on a highway and the second time was on my driveway, i applied the brakes and the entire car shut down, including the power steering, power brakes, and engine. that time i rolled out of my driveway and into the road. i was lucky no one was coming

Loss of power brakes at low speed especially in traffic and parking with repeated application of brakes, pedal becomes very hard and requires much pressure to make vehicle stop, in reverse grinding is also heard. mechanic says belt driven vacuum pump may be defective, other complaints and bulletins are stating all components must be replaced, i would think a $58000 truck should last more than 64k miles before needing all the major brake components changed. if you don't have very strong legs when this happens you are going to crash..should be a recall

Loss of braking at low speed while in reverse. occurred on at least two occasions just past expiration of bumper to bumper portion of vehicle warranty (see attached complaint letter to gm for details). dealer stated vacuum booster was defective and repair costs exceeded $400.00. gm home office was notified viz fedex letter. other than contacting me for basic information, no further contact was initiated by gm or delivering dealer. alleged defective part is in owner possession which gm was notified of as well.

Tried to stop tuck when parking. brakes were extremely hard and truck came to a slow stop while i was mashing the breaks with all my might. there was break fluid all around right front tire. dealership found engine oil in vacuum line of vacuum pump due to valve stuck in pump causing hard brake pedal. replaced vacuum pump, pipe, brake booster and master cylinder, fluid.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. while driving at low speeds, the brakes failed to stop the vehicle when the brake pedal was depressed. the contact stated that the brake pedal had to be depressed with force to operate correctly. the vehicle was taken to henson chevrolet buick gmc (201 n may st, madisonville, tx 77864, (866) 551-9977) where it was diagnosed that the brake booster vacuum pump needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 23,000. *tt consumer stated braking failure happened on the residence driveway. *jb

Coming to a stop in a parking lot the brake pedal became very hard and would not stop the forward motion of the truck. the truck hit the curb stopping its forward motion. no damage to the the truck. i had the problem diagnosed as a bad brake vac pump. the pump was replaced for 496.00 . the truck only had 26000 miles , i have told that this is not that uncommon.

2014 gmc sierra 1500 denali pick-up truck with 67,900 miles: experienced complete loss of power brakes in stop-n-go traffic situation on highway. problem started as an rare issue that would correct itself and progressively got worse over a week's time. issue occurred when in traffic requiring frequent stop-n-go braking. brake pedal went completely to the floor and stopping distances dramatically increased. had no way to manually apply the brakes to get them fully engaged. ultimately forced to shift into neutral and apply parking brake to stop. subsequently found gm bulletin #pit5361b referring to other customer problems with weak vacuum at brake booster. that problem was confirmed and diagnosed by my automotive professional. ended up having to replace brake master cylinder, vacuum booster, vacuum pump, vacuum tube/pipe and 2 serpentine belts for a grand total of $1626.00 in repair work (similar amount to the others i found who experienced this issue). talked to my gmc dealer who confirmed that this is a recognized issue that hasn't yet risen to the level of a "safety recall". however, i was told "stay tuned" because they wouldn't be surprised if a recall on the power brake system was right around the corner.

Brake pedal became hard and was difficult to stop properly. i felt that i had no control over this vehicle. .i brought the truck to vail gmc in mt kisco ,ny on sept 22, 2017 they said it was the vacuum pump and had to be replaced at the cost of $353.16. the vehicle only had 40256 miles on it just out of warranty. it was brought to my attention that this a real problem with this issue nationally. this is a potentially a dangerous condition and is unsafe.this braking problem was on the the city street and parking lot.

Hard brake pedal at low speeds causing the truck to not stop. dealership says a full brake system replacement is needed. i've serached online and there are several people having this same issue. it seems to be very common, but nothing is being done about it by gmc.

When brakes were applied the truck would not stop, truck was just out of warranty by weeks, independent shop replaced the vacuum air pump for the brake system. i was lucky that i was moving very slow ,in a parking lot, no one was hurt and no damage to the truck.

Had the recall for the low maneuver turning issue performed at a dealership when i had my oil changed on august 15, 2017. less than a week later the issue occurred when turning into the driveway and dealership will not honor my complaint to fix it. the statement i hear is "we can't duplicate the problem" but i'm telling them it happened. either the procedure to rectify the recall isn't working or they didn't perform it correctly. i need help.

Rounding a corner at low speed and the a/c compressor locked up and stalled the engine. i lost steering and brakes nearly hit a pole. search for this issue and you will see that gm has a known issue on the 2014 a/c units that they are doing nothing about

Braking at short distances. vehicle continues to move after brake is depressed.

Hard brake pedal at low speeds. forward or reverse

Takata recall. driving through the smoky mountains brake pedal went all the way to the floor and didnt stop. i released pedal and pressed again and it was very firm and hard to get the truck to slow down/ stop. when this occurred the system showed no signs of system failing. if was a very scary situation with having my family in the truck with me. im very thankful that it didnt end a lot worse like it could have. all in all i drove 4 hours to gatlinburg with no signs of issues and for it to just go out without a warning something needs to be done.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. while driving 70 mph, the vehicle stalled and the stabilitrak warning indicator illuminated. in addition, the steering wheel and brakes seized. the contact powered off the engine while in traffic. the vehicle was restarted and drove normally. the contact stated that the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to covert buick gmc (located at 11750 research blvd, austin, tx 78759, (512) 583-3411) where diagnostic testing was completed, but no failure code was found. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 103,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. while driving 15 mph, the brake pedal was depressed upon coming to a red light but failed to respond without warning. the contact was able to stop the vehicle after downshifting and depressing the brake pedal. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake assist failed and needed to be repaired. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 34,000. the vin was not available.

Intermittently, when applying the brakes to stop for a red light, the engine wants to keep the vehicle going at the same speed and fights the brake so the vehicle cannot stop. shifting the gear shift into neutral allows the brakes to work but the engine rpm revs up to 2500 rpm for about 15 seconds before dropping to idle. if the driver didn't apply the brakes hard enough or shift into neutral, the vehicle would overpower the brakes and drive into anything ahead. analogy: it acts as if the cruise control was on (and it's not) and tried to keep the same forward speed no matter the brake application. dealer cannot reproduce the problem, no alert warning light. some times, going at highway speed, taking foot off accelerator and expecting vehicle to start slowing down, it stays at same speed for about 15 seconds before dropping rpms. this has been happening, intermittently, for a few months.

Loss of brakes at low speed, forward and reverse. brake pedal gets stiff and brakes barely stop the truck.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. the contact stated that while driving at 65 mph, the contact attempted to depress the brake pedal but it failed to respond. the contact had to apply extreme force to the brake pedal and shift the gear shifter into neutral in order to get the vehicle to stop. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, who diagnosed that the brake booster needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 153,758.

Due to a problem with brake booster vacuum sensor and brake booster large vacuum leak, extra pressure is needed to apply brakes. brakes are essentially non existent in vehicle. problem diagnosed by dealer. dealer states this is not a normal problem with the braking system. this is a safety issue especially when driving and this unexpectedly happens. vehicle was in motion when this happened driving at approximately 45 mph. i understand this was a similar problem with the 2014 malibu. replacement parts are on order unknown when expected due to this not being a part regularly replaced (per dealer).

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 20 mph, the steering wheel seized and veered independently. in addition, several unknown warning indicators illuminated. the contact was able to regain control after depressing the brake pedal. the failure recurred and the stability trac, and the service trailer brake warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that a excessive voltage drop resulted in a loss of power with the manual trailer brake, the bcm, electronic bcm, ecm, steering. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 27,416.

Within about 15 months of ownership my vacuum pump on the brakes malfunctioned, while i was towing a pontoon boat. needless to say i was very scared that i was not going to be able to stop but eventually i slowed down enough to pull into a gas station in warsaw, in. luckily when this happened there were very few other vehicles out on the road otherwise this story may have a different ending. this happened on highway 15 in milford, in.
