The brake pedal goes almost the whole way to the floor without stopping the car. we've had the car in to two different dealerships multiple times and have had several costly repairs that have not corrected the problem. now we're told it needs a new abs unit and will cost an additional $1100 to repair. we have had several close calls, but so far no accidents causing damage. most recently, going around a sharp curve on a rainy night, my husband skidded and ran off the road before the brakes engaged. they had been working, and the failure was sudden.
On roughly five occasions my brake pedal has not allowed me to stop in sufficient time. the brake pedal went to the floor after hitting a rough patch and a wet road on a normal street. after pumping the brakes it resolves itself. sometimes more quickly than other times. first time occurred, brakes were bled to remove air from line, then master cylinder was replaced and did not resolve the issue. fortunately, no injuries due to my safe driving of distancing from previous vehicles. the belle tire current diagnoses is the faulty abs hydraulic control unit. documenting last time happened: 11/7/18.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford fusion. while braking, the abs activated, the brakes malfunctioned, and the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard. the vehicle delayed in finally stopping. the failure occurred at least five times with the brakes returning to normal afterwards. the dealer and the manufacturer were not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 189,000.
Brake pedal goes completely to floor and increased stopping distance is required. appears to be related to the hydraulic control unit.
Sever brakes problems. car has been to 2 mechanics. all brakes, calipers, rotors, pads, cylinders checked. bleed the brakes and replaced brake fluid. nothing, brakes are weak. cannot stop in time. dangerous.. recall.recall.recall
Has going down hill (on city street) applying brakes and hit pothole with left rear wheel. brakes became weak and pedal went towards floor. braking continued to be impaired with excessive pedal travel and weak braking. this is the second time that i have experienced brake degradation although problem resolved itself after parking / starting cycle before. has not cleared this time. after searching web, found ea 18-002 which exactly describes concern. new hydraulic control unit is on order and i have appointment with dealer friday.
Vehicle brake pedal is soft and or spongy after abs engaged. pedal travels and can cause an accident because pedal stops car later in depression.
When stopping or slowing down (such as when approaching a stop sign or stop light) the brakes began feeling soft, "mushy," and braking distance seemed to increase. bringing the car to a more abrupt stop required increased pressure on the brakes. i took the car to my mechanic for servicing. the mechanic "bled" the brakes and advised me the problem appears to be the hydraulic control unit (hcu) not closing properly and allowing small amounts of air into the brake line, causing the brakes to feel mushy and requiring more pressure than normal to stop the car. this condition has been documented to your agency previously as evidenced by this document: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/inv/2018/inoa-ea18002-5464.pdf . my complaint is meant to add to you list of complaintants.
I was driving had used my brakes no problem i then went to stop quickly and my brake pedal sunk all the way to the floor and felt like it had no pressure.i had to pull the emergency brake or i was going to smash into a car in front of me and i had plenty of space between us but my car wouldn't stop. i had experienced this a few times last winter in the slick road conditions of new england but the pressure would return the following day. but this time no luck i brought it to the shop and was told it could be a problem with my abs system. in doing research i have found their have been numerous complaints about this problem. i am appalled that such a significant safety issues has not been addressed by ford. i purchased my vehicle new and have been the only operator since. i have a small child and frequently have other children in my car and to think my stopping situation could of been worse and all along ford has been aware of this issue and has yet to recall due to the cost of the replacement part. they know it's faulty and there are many shops and videos about this online. i only found out by doing research now that i have a problem and can't believe i was never notified about any potential problems. and only now have found out there is an open investigation on this issue. i take care of my vehicle and it only has 97777 miles on it. i could of seriously injured or killed someone or myself. i would like to know the status of this investigation of possible thank you.
I was driving on a city street on a rainy evening when i had to stop short on some painted lines on the roadway, because someone braked suddenly in front of me while driving, and my abs kicked on. after that, the brakes went soft and it took longer to stop my car.
On oct. 10, 2018, around 3:30-4:00 p.m. on a busy city street---it was rainy day-- ,i had to lam on my brakes to keep from hitting a person who stopped suddenly in front of me when the traffic light turned. i heard a 'pop' sound. after that, i discovered i had no brakes. i was able to get home. at first i figured i had a master brake cylinder problem or a leak. i had a new brake master brake cylinder put in and the mechanic discovered the problem was not the master brake cylinder. he checked for leaks in the line, and there were no leaks. he said it was probably the abs 'and that i should take it to a dealership. i did so. they checked it and said the abs gasket had cracked and that a new abs had to be put in. the estimate was @ seventeen hundred dollars. i was unhappy. i contacted my insurance company and the representative was most helpful. i determined after research that as of april of this year (2018) some one million ford fusions were/or have been considered by the fed relative to brake failures. most of those cars, however, had more than hundred thousand miles. my car has only 57,218.2 miles, as photographed and established by the dealership and the insurance company. my insurance policy wouldn't cover this repair because it is termed 'mechanical.' it seems to me that the abs shouldn't have failed in this case-- a car with so few miles on it. . any help would be appreciated.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford fusion. while driving approximately 60 mph, the brake pedal was depressed, but the vehicle did not stop immediately. the contact stated that the stopping distance was extended. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the abs malfunctioned and was faulty. after bleeding the brake pedal lines, the vehicle operated normally. the manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 134,718. *tt
When braking on a rough road surface while moving the brake pedal moved towards the floor and went soft. after several applications of pumping the pedal the feel improved somewhat but did not get back to normal. also, the free-play distance of the pedal travel increased over the previous normal condition. took car to ford dealer, they replaced the master cylinder, which did not fix issue. they then told me the abs hcu needed to be replaced. vehicle is currently awaiting hcu replacement.
9/6/18 driving down the street approaching an intersection with the traffic light turning red. i ran over a pothole, the abs braking system kicked in, and all the sudden, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor, causing me to run through the red light and nearly hit several cars. had i not swerved hard left and into the grass median, i may not be making this report right now, and my family may be making funeral arrangements. this is not the first time this has happened. this is one of many. however, i was told of this website and told to report this dangerous problem in hopes that ford will put a recall out for this before someone gets killed if they haven't already. i had to sit in the median for a few minutes with my car turned off to gather myself, as i was a nervous wreck. i did notice that once i turned my car back on, i had brakes again, but they had to be pumped up in order to get a full pedal again. 9/20/18 driving down the road that's currently being worked on by the city. they've grated the asphalt to prepare it for a new layer and adding a new lane. in doing so, it has made the lane you drive on rough. in following traffic, i always leave at least one to two car lengths between my car and the car in front of me for obvious reasons. when the traffic ahead of me suddenly stopped, my vehicle decided to keep going. i depressed the brake pedal, the abs braking system kicked in, and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor, leaving me with no brakes!! i had nowhere to go, as there were only two lanes, one going north, and one going south. i had to gear down and use my emergency brake to stop. this is extremely dangerous, and someone is going to get killed!!! as soon as i can, this hunk of junk, piece of crap ford is being traded in for a honda!!
Extended braking distance #ea18002 issue. my 2008 ford fusion's abs system is causing the brake pedal to go to the floor. horne freedom ford in safford arizonia diagnosed the problem as a bad master cylinder when i specifically discussed the abs hydralic control with them before the diagnosis. the master cylinder was replaced and then the brake power booster based on freedom ford's diagnosis. the brake pedal still had problems and shows the manufacturer is not capable of reliably testing and repairing the abs module on my 2008 ford fusion. this is a crititcal failure of ford and dealers to diagnose and fix a safety defect in the abs hydraulic control unit.
Second time reporting a recurrent issue. this year/model vehicle has a known issue with the hydraulic control unit (hcu), which affects braking capacity, and either is or was under an open investigation. the hcu/abs function of this vehicle can become disabled when jarred by hitting a large bump - such as a pothole - while the brake is engaged and the vehicle is still in motion. when this occurs the brake pedal becomes instantly soft, loses braking power, and travels a much further distance towards the floor. this instant decrease of brake pressure drastically increases the stopping time of the vehicle. a potentially very dangerous safety concern. the jarring of the vehicle only has a negative affect if the brake is being engaged at the time of jarring. this particular vehicle has had 3 of these braking incidences within the past 12 months. (first incident previously reported to nhtsa in dec. 2017). none of which have resulted in an accident as of yet. the pedal will remain soft for some time. it seemingly can be "reset" either randomly, or with excessive brake pumping over a substantial period of time. this so-called "reset" could just be a fortunate fluke. i have read in other reports of a similar unknown "reset" effect, until the next episode. local ford dealerships and other independent service stations seem to be completely unaware of the issue. often misdiagnosing the master cylinder as the problem initially. i thought i had heard or read that a replacement hcu part may have been released with a different internal lubricant substance, which would supposedly prevent the hcu valves from malfunctioning. i haven't been able to verify this. if i knew that better quality, remedied replacement parts were available, i would have this part replaced. however, i do not want to proceed with an expensive repair only to have the same recurrent issues with a faulty part.
Pedal hit the floor and not stopping the car properly
I continue to have issues with braking on my car. basically when you press the brake pedal, the first 2/3's are useless. i continue to have to place more pressure onto the pedal to get the brakes to function. when braking driving down the road, when i press the pedal to brake, it does nothing until i get it close to the floor. i have this issue everyday, everytime i brake. this morning on 09*07*18 i placed my foot on the brake and shifted into reverse. my car started to roll out of my driveway into a city street, into traffic. i pressed the pedal totally to the floor, and barely came to a stop. this issue is becoming more and more dangerous everyday. thank you.
After the abs engages, the brakes are extremely soft and have dangerously more pedal travel before braking occurs. pumping the brakes helps, but the problem persists for days before returning to normal pedal travel and braking. also it does not appear the the abs system can engage again until after normal pedal travel and braking resumes.
I was entering a left hand curve with the brake applied. the road was a little rough and as i applied the brake harder, the pedal went to the floor. i pumped the brakes, but the car slid off the road and into the ditch stopping against the bank of the ditch and a pole. in the past 12 months the abs warning light had come on several times, but had not stayed on the next time the car was started.
If an event that engages the abs happens, pedal firmness is lost and requires 50-75% more travel before brakes will slow the car. this persists over many stops and for many minutes but ultimately pedal firmness does recover. while in the failed state the brakes engage at differing pedal positions making stopping a guessing game as to how much pedal travel and force will be required to stop the car. outside of this event period the brakes perform as expected.
Driving down the interstate highway, a car cut off my vehicle and abruptly slowed down. i had to slam on my brakes, which activated the abs system (the whole car shuttered and quickly slowed down). at my exit from the freeway, however, the brakes suddenly had only 30 to 40 percent stopping power and i nearly rear-ended a different car. now, the brakes on the car feel very "soft" and it takes pushing the pedal all the way down in order to stop the vehicle.
Problem started in february. anytime brakes got wet or i hit the smallest of bumps the brakes wouldn't work. had to push the pedal all the way to the floor to get it to stop. this happens every time it rains or i hit a bump including speed bumps. i can be in a parkin lot going slow or on the highway driving normal. this has happened multiple times now over the past several months
While using the breaks hit a bump in the road then the break pedal went to the floor the car still stooped but not as expected had to swerve to car at a stop light. the condition of the pedal going to far did not go way for the rest of the trip about 2 miles. the condition was not resolved until i took the car to a gravel lot and caused the abs to cycle now the car is back to full pedal.
2008 ford fusion se v6 76,000 miles. we have had an on going issue with the brakes over the last year. after an abs event the brake padel goes right to the floor with minimal stopping power. after 3 trips to our machanic, system checked, brakes flushed and bleeded and $$$$ spent it is still happening. we were hoping it was resolved until the last incident the other day almost resulted in a serious accident. thank god the other vehicle had brakes that worked properly as i braked and went straight through a red light!! this is not a master cylinder problem. it is 100% the abs pump and module unit!! the system fails and there is no warning light on the dash! so we currently have a ticking time bomb for a passanger air bag and a car that may or may not stop when the brakes are applied. this is a huge problem ford!!! we are still waiting for the airbag replacement and now there is major brake problem that may cause the hand grenade to go off in a collision! there needs to be a recall before there is a fatality.
Having brake issues with my ford fusion. when breaking the pedal is sinks to the floor, replaced master cylinder bleed the brakes and still having issues with it the pedal goes all the way to the floor and feels spongey. very unsafe to drive car brakes are not immediately responsive takes a few seconds before the car starts to slow down. note i am not the only one who is having issues with the brakes.
This is related to investigation ea 18-002. i was driving during rainy weather. my vehicle was in motion and a vehicle in front of me abruptly slammed on it's brakes and i had to apply my brakes hard as well in order to avoid a collision. due to the wet road the abs activated and my car stopped in time without a collision. after the abs activated the brake pedal was very soft and when trying to apply my brakes the brake pedal traveled all the way to the floor. thereafter it took much longer for my car to slow down when the brakes were applied due to the pedal travel to the floor which was a safety concern in rush hour traffic on wet roads. i was afraid that i would not be able to stop my car in time since it took longer for my car to slow down. it was not until many hours later and after pumping the brakes repeatedly that the brake pedal firmness returned to normal. this problem has occurred more than once with the abs in snowy or rainy weather.
While driving, if i have to come to an abrupt stop and the abs kicks in, my brake pedal goes all the way down, and i have no brakes at all. this also happens if i run across a small pothole, uneven pavement, manhole cover, etc. i have ran through red lights into oncoming traffic, into the ditch, into the center median, all on many different roads, and done a complete 360 on the interstate while raining all due to the abs braking system failing. i don't know how many times my children and i have come close to a fatal accident due to this abs braking system failure. i was recently informed of this website to report this issue. otherwise, i would have reported this long ago, when it first started happening. the last incident occurred on 8/12/18 on gene snyder freeway.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford fusion. while driving over a bump in the road, the brakes were applied, but the vehicle did not immediately stop. the contact was depressing the brake pedal to the floorboard. the abs indicator illuminated and flashed. also, while at a stop, the brakes lost power and did not stop the vehicle when the brake pedal was depressed. the contact called columbia ford kia at 860-228-2886 (located at 234 willimantic rd, columbia, ct 06237) and was informed that they did not know about the failure. the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to nhtsa. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 146,000.
Driving down highway, the brakes needed to be applied abruptly and caused an abs event. since that time, the brake pedal has been extremely soft and needs significant pressure to get the vehicle to stop. the brake pedal needs to be pushed to the floor. also, there is a slight hiss coming from underneath the hood when applying brakes that can be sometimes heard. after searching the internet for similar issues, the problem is due to faulty abs module and hcu (hyrdraulic control unit). ford dealer states the part is on back order and unable to fix the problem.
I was going down the highway when a road switches from 2 into 1 exit lane & 1 lane. the 1 continuing road has a small quick curve to it and the cars ahead of me were braking so i preemptively eased into a hard brake while taking that small quick curve and (i believe) the abs attempted or succeeded in kicking in, but as soon as that happened the brake pedal went from being stiff and braking quickly to soft and braking dramatically slower. luckily i leave enough room even if i am going quickly and i was able to push the pedal to the floor and slow down in time. even when pushing the pedal to the floor after the incident it still doesn't have anywhere near the braking force that it had at even 1/3 of the pedal distance as it did before. i unplugged the abs/tcs/heated seats/rear backup sensor fuse and the brake pedal surged back to normal operation. when i turned off the car, inserted the same fuse back in, and then started the car again the pedal still operates as normal working condition. this is quite a scary defect as it is the brakes failing/degrading because of an abs computer flaw that causes the brakes to fail only under the extreme circumstances in which they need to be performing 100%. extremely dangerous flaw that no doubt has caused countless accidents because of a manufacturer flaw.
Brake pedal travels all the way to the floor after abs event. braking is now compromised. no trouble lights or abs codes. bled brake system, replaced all calipers and pads, problem not resolved. replaced abs pump and control module, problem resolved.
Whenever the car hits rough roads, the brakes lose effectiveness and the stopping distance increases drastically. fortunately, there hasnt been a colision caused by faulty system. recently, 25 june 2018, while driving straight, this car entered into a fish-tail ending with a 180 degree spin. the brakes became spongy to the floor and it appeared as if the wheels locked up and caused this to happen.
Brake failure. on two separate occasions while attempting to stop my car at a city intersection the brake pedal, upon application, travelled all the way to the floor without the brakes engaging. i immediately let off the brake pedal and began to pump the pedal, which eventually engaged the brakes softly. fortunately both times i was able to finally stop the vehicle before colliding with another car. for a little while after that the brakes continued to be very soft, requiring much more pedal travel than normal.
Brakes go mushy if stopping on rough surface, straight line, no ice or snow. spongy pedal remains until car is driven for awhile.
When braking my brake pedal is spongy, and the vehicle has difficulty stopping. i have difficulty stopping the vehicle even at speeds less than 25 mph. the result is a stopping distance that is doubled from any other vehicle with abs i've ever driven. in an attempt to resolve this issue, and make the vehicle safe to drive, i have replaced brake calipers, pads, rotors, master cylinder, brake fluid flush and bleeding the brake system. the only other repairs that can be made to resolve this issue is replacing the abs control module, and abs pressure modulator valve, once these repairs are completed the total amount to attempt to resolve this issue will be in excess of $2500.
Braking issue. car vibrates extremely bad when braking from high to low speeds. also, if the car hits a bump/driving in the rain, while applying the brakes; the brake pedal goes to the floor. all brake pressure is gone and to obtain it back the brakes have to be 'pumped.' please do something before it becomes a fatality issue. i have almost crashed due to this issue. it is very dangerous.
On or about wednesday, may 30, 2018 on the commute home from work i pushed on the brakes as i came to a stop light. the brakes weren't there and the brake pedal continued to the floor board, i began pumping the brakes to stop and was able to stop. i took back roads to get off the main highway and experienced the same problem at each stop sign. at a 4 way stop sign i coasted from about two blocks to a bare crawl anticipating that would help me actually stop - it didn't - my vehicle continued slowly past the 4 way into the middle of the intersection and a vehicle that had the right of way on the right stopped to let me continue as i waved and expressed i was sorry the best way i could. i made it home and called the tire/brake shop and told them what happened. i then drove the same route to the tire/brake shop and the brake lines were bled, new calipers, etc. the auto repairmen stated the master cylinder valve was compromised and to watch for the same problem because something was wrong and the next time would require extensive and costly replacement. this was my only vehicle i had access to commute to and from work each day.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford fusion. while driving 50 mph, the brake pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to stop. the contact engaged the emergency brake and shifted the vehicle into neutral, but the vehicle still failed to stop until it crashed into a street sign. the air bags deployed. there were no injuries. a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to a salvage yard. the dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 121,000.
My brake master cylinder was replaced in june 2017. just had the power booster replaced on may 4, 2018. it is now having the same problem as on may 4th - brakes going all the way down, have to pump brakes in order to stop. i was traveling from oceanside ca to scottsdale az on may 4th and just around town today, may 22 here in oceanside.
First incident, i was turning a corner, hit rough pavement and the abs engaged. the brakes went to the floor and the pedal was soft afterwards. the second incident, while slowing and hitting a rough patch on the road, the abs system engaged. when i braked for the intersection, the pedal went to the floor. i had to pump the brakes to make the vehicle come to a stop.
When operating my 2008 ford fusion and pressing the brake pedal to slow and stop the vehicle; the brake pedal has a very soft spongy feel. the travel of the brake pedal takes the pedal nearly to the floor. vehicle seems to take a longer time to stop. this braking situation occurs in neighborhood traffic at 25mph, city traffic at 30 to 40 mph and on the highway at multiple speeds 50 mph plus...
Ford fusion abs brake failure during braking. my abs system has completely failed, and i finally feel safe. i thought the car was trying to kill me. before the abs system finally fully failed,( the orange dash light is now on, and the abs system is off.)the abs system would pick the worst time to fail , during basic braking, emergency stop braking, wet braking or in sand. it seemed that any time the tires had less than perfect traction, the abs could randomly fail without warning. the brake pedal in an emergency stop situation, or basic braking, would go all the way to the floor, emitting a loud ratcheting sound as the pedal became ineffective and soft, not stopping the vehicle. this would happen when wheel speeds were below 30 mph, and the cars sensors thought the tires had lost traction, when they really had not, i was on i-4 during the last hurricane and had to park the car due to all the traffic starting and stopping. the brake pedal doing its random working and not working, i almost got into 4 different accidents due to the brakes completely failing, never before have i had a car where i wondered if the brakes were going to work, or fail possible causing a crash. with the abs not active, the cars braking still works, and not once has the brakes failed with the orange dash light on. this major problem needs to be addressed immediately.,,, ford still has not contacted me with a replacement for the passenger side takata airbag that is currently under recall. so i am driving a car with a failed abs system, and a air bag thats a bomb waiting to go off spraying me with shrap metal . and the car is not under recall ? the ford fusion is a lemon , and unsafe at any speed.
Son was in an accident where he rear ended a vehicle. the car in front stopped short and my son tried to stop but brake pedal went to floor. accident occurred on rural 2 lane road at about 30 mph. my son tried to swerve off the road to miss the vehicle but clipped him. over $4,000 in repairs and brakes are still very soft. new calipers, master cylinder and still not right. updated 9/21/18*jb
My vehicle was in motion every time the problem occurs. i lose all braking ability for approximately two to no more than five second periods. this has occurred on six total occasions on different days and months.i have replaced my vehicles master cylinder six months ago. i don't feel safe driving my own car. i have witnesses that can confirm this information. the problem has occurred on highways, public roads, also in private drives.
Brake pedal went to floor while driving and braking on a back road. had to pump brake pedal several times to get to stop. took to ford dealer who reported no leaks but intermittent problem with abs and abs hcu. said it happened infrequently with this model. only fix is to replace expensive abs modules. found numerous reports online of this problem with other 2008 and 2009 ford fusions. there should probably be a recall. dealer did not recommend replacing abs modules at this time said considered vehicle safe.
Sudden brake failure after applying brakes on damp pavement. speed was about 30 mph on a city street. after pumping pedal, brakes returned but pedal was soft and nearly to the floorboard. brakes have remained soft greatly extending braking distance making vehicle unsafe to drive. this came without any warning or indication on the dashboard that brake system was compromised. after speaking with a ford technician, the opinion was possible failure of the hydraulic control module and needed to be followed up. this incident was a very close call with a utility pole and thanks to a working emergency brake and quick thinking, an accident was avoided. this needs to be investigated with a possible recall.
Abs control module
While driving the car the brakes are very "spongy". when trying to stop quickly i almost went through the red light on a major intersection! the pedal went practically all the way to the floor and i didn't think i was going to be able to stop. i have to prepare myself to stop when i need to and i stay a distance away from others because i am scared the brakes won't stop me! there needs to be a recall, this is so scary and unsafe to drive!
I was traveling at 65 mph on the highway and had to stop quickly which engaged the abs. after abs engaged, the brake pedal became much looser, where the brake pedal would almost touch the floor and required much longer distance for the car to stop following this event. it appears this failure in the brake system is due to the abs hydraulic control unit causing for very unsafe conditions in this vehicle.
