We have classified the 793 complaints from 2013 Ford Focus about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle began to shake and stalled continuously after applying the brakes. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician diagnosed that the adaptive transmission was faulty and needed to be replaced. the failure recurred multiple times and the clutch assembly was replaced. however, the failure persisted. the vehicle was taken to the dealer again where the transmission was reprogrammed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 25,000. the vin was not available. updated 03/04/15*lj updated 6/15/2015 *js
Car will slip changing gears when accelerating causing a pause/jerk that could potentially lead to an accident. this has happened on many occasions when merging into traffic or making a turn. we have taken the car in for service 5 times this past year. twice they have replaced the clutch and 3 times did an update. each time telling us to give it 500-1000 miles to settle in. it only takes one time for something to happen. looking at paperwork and found out the clutch was replaced a couple of months before purchase due to the same problem. we are the second owners and since buying it "used" (10,000+) we cannot file lemon law.
I have owned this ford focus for approx. 1 year. 10 months into owning it, i noticed the car would shudder when i was driving at lower speeds, or pulling into the driveway which has a slight incline. the car felt like it was going to stall unless i gave it a lot of gas to keep it moving. there is a loud grinding noise coming from the front end. after about a week of this i took it to a local ford dealer, a tech. rode with me and agreed it was shuddering and making grinding noises. they said this was common in this vehicle, but they had a fix for it. they reset the transmission strategy and said it should take care of it. within a week the same thing started all over, the jerking, the grinding noise was louder than ever and more chronic. i took it back to the same dealership that had reset the transmission. again a tech drove it, confirmed my concerns. i was informed ford would not authorize any additional repairs on my vehicle, and that the grinding is "normal clutch ratchet noise". i took it to the dealership where i purchased the car this time, explained my concerns. i waited for approximately 2 hours while they inspected my car. i was informed that my car was operating normally, and no further repairs would be authorized by ford. the service consultant told me there were five other customers ahead of me for clutch replacements for the same kind of issue i am having. he stated the clutches were on back order due to the high number of problems with these vehicles. talked to the regional customer service manager today, she told me ford was only responsible for mechanical failures. her words to me were that i would have to "live with the grinding noise, the shuddering and jerking."what happens when i get rear ended at a stop light because my car shudders at low speeds and takes off slowly?" 3 times in for service within 30 days. no help from ford! *tr
Vehicle warning "stop safely now" appeared and the ev lost all its motive power and stalled. repeated attempts to restart the vehicle failed.
Driving into work one morning, i was following behind another vehicle at a low rate of speed, almost to a stop when i then turned into a parking spot, pushed the gas pedal and the vehicle did not accelerate so i then pushed the gas pedal again and the vehicle surged forward at a much faster speed than usual and the vehicle slammed into the wall of the parking structure in the space i was attempting to park in. on other occasions before this, i had experienced hesitation while pressing down on the gas pedal but nothing like what happened the morning that the vehicle surged forward, hitting the cement wall in the parking structure. *js
This applies to a ford focus electric, not a gasoline model. was traveling approximately 30 mph when "stop safely now" indicator appeared. vehicle slowed and came to stop within a few seconds while still in traffic lanes. i placed the car in park and switched the system off, then on again. it started normally and drove normally for approximately 50 miles while i went home. there is no apparent valid reason for the vehicle to stop itself. under other circumstances this could have been extremely dangerous. checking reports on the internet, it appears that this problem is very common, and many people have reported repeated occurances of this problem. weather at the time was moderate (70 to 75 degrees f). this is a new car (two weeks old, approximately 1350 miles) while i don't suggest that the following are contributing factors, i list them because they were unusual for me and this may be helpful to reviewers looking for common circumstances: 1. the vehicle had been given a level 1 (120 volt) charge earlier in the day, bringing the state of charge from approximately 60% to 70%. this is unusual because i usually use level 2 (240 volt) charging. 2, the vehicle had been switched "on" with the air conditioner operating for about an hour but without driving anywhere. the problem occured shortly thereafter, after driving approximately two miles. 3, no other unusual circumstances were noted. car drove normally before and after this incident.
This is for the ford focus electric. i was driving on a busy road going approx 50 mph when all of a sudden i lost power and had no acceleration a message came on the display that said stop safely now in red with a exclamation point inside a triangle at that point i was a hazard to other drivers as the vehicle was slowing down as i was trying to merge to the right hand side. i finally was able to stop and i turned off the vehicle. i let it sit for a minute and tried to restart and it would not, i tried a second time and it finally came up ready to go. i contacted the dealer and they advised me to take to the service dept in the morning. this was a safety hazard that needs to be fixed. *tr
Traveling at approx. 35 m.p.h. on county road, pull over safely light came on, unable to pull over immediately due to traffic, traveled a short distance in attempt to find a shoulder to pull onto, car died in a curve. no power at all. *tr
While driving at 30 mph, the car quit running and displayed "stop safely now". *tr
This is regarding ford focus electric vehicle 2013 model. this is the second time it has happened. while driving it suddenly beeps and displays message "stop safely now" and car just stalls and stops running. quite dangerous while driving. it has been to ford dealership after the first incident and they were not able to diagnose the issue and after a couple of weeks that i got back the vehicle, it happened again. it is again in the service center of ford dealership, but they still do not know why this happens or what is the fix. this needs to be addressed by ford asap as it is a huge safety issue. *tr
I bought the 2013 ford focus brand new and it has been the biggest headache. the transmission is no good! the car will hesitate to take off and then take off really fast after revving up to over 7500 rpm before shifting into gear and taking off very fast. this is very dangerous and unsafe to me and other drivers on the road! it shutters and shakes, sometimes doesn't want to start. this car is a lemon and not dependable. i sure hope a recall is issued because this is not fair to the consumers who are paying for a car that is defective. *tr
I have had issues since the car was one year old. the issue that has just happened on thursday 2nd of july. i had just come off the high way and was heading home and the car just stopped driving! now they are saying it is the tcm (all part of the transmission/shift gear). i have had the shift gears replaced two times and computer updates two times. now this is very serious, if i was still on the high way i could have been killed. i have asked on more than one occasion to have the car bought back and have been told no! i am afraid to drive this car,and with the problems i am having a huge problem trading it in, i would be underneath by 7,000. please help!!!!
Pulling from red lights/stop signs is very dangerous due to the transmission stalling, shuttering, grinding. very easily to get into accidents because stalling in transmission. please recall this vehicle a lot of families are not safe in this vehicle. *tr
I was approaching an intersection at approximately 15mph and noticed the stop safely now icon alerting on the dash. i was able to safely stop the vehicle. when i went to proceed through the intersection the car was stalled with the stop safely now light still illuminated. i tried to restart the vehicle but it would not activate. i exited the vehicle for fear of being rear-ended. after 5 minutes i attempted the ignition again and was able to drive away. the car is now at dealer. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while stopped at a traffic light or stop sign, the vehicle shook and shifted into the wrong gears when the accelerator pedal was depressed. the contact also noticed that the vehicle hesitated while shifting. the vehicle was taken to multiple dealers for diagnostic testing and was informed that the seals to the clutch housing were leaking. oil seeped onto the clutch, which caused the vehicle not to shift properly. the computer for the transmission was reprogrammed and one of the two clutches was replaced, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was sold with a power shift rather that automatic; therefore, the failures would recur. the approximate failure mileage was 6,000.
I have noticed that my car shifts awkwardly and makes a grinding noise when shifting into second and sometimes third gear. sometimes the car will bog down and then get a surge of power and level off. sometimes i will start going and between first and second gear it will bog and cause me to jerk forward. some days it won't do it but most of the time it does. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving at unknown speeds, when shifting into second and third gear, the vehicle jerked. the failure occurred daily. the contact mentioned that the failure occurred violently when on an incline. the vehicle was taken to a dialer where it was diagnosed that the clutch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 24,000.
however it does take 1000 miles for it to learn how you drive, well we have had the car for almost 2 yrs now and it is still learning, there are thousands of complaints about this vehicle, from the beginning of purchasing this car we have had nothing but trouble with it, we have had passenger side seat belt buckle issues causing air bag problems, ignition switch problems, we have noticed that since we bought the car the transmission has had shifting issues along with shuddering and hesitation problems, we received a letter from ford stating that there was a tsb to bring the car in to have the computer re-programmed to address the issue, we took it into the dealership and were told if we still have the problem to contact them and let them know, we were driving the car one day and was stopped at an intersection fixing to cross 2 lanes of traffic it was clear we went to pull out the car hesitated couldn't find the right gear to go into and suddenly surged into traffic, i then contacted the dealership immediately and the service advisor started asking if i have ever driven a manual transmission before, mind you this is supposedly an automatic "manual" as they call it and is controlled by computer and that it will act as a manual transmission, the advisor from was very condescending stating if i knew how to drive a manual transmission that i would understand, and that i can bring the car in for service that he could "care less" whether or not i brought it back in or not that he got paid every time i brought it in, i have spoken to the dealer principal about this and stated about it being very poor customer service, i then proceeded to contact ford motor company the following monday, no help was provided here, this car is not safe......major issues with the transmission. *tr
My car had to go in for service twice. the issue as i described it was that the car bogs down, shudders while trying to accelerate, makes a rattling noise, and shifts incorrectly into the wrong gear. they applied a software update on 9/14 that was supposed to fix the issue, but it did not. i brought the car in today and they indicate that the transmission is leaking into the clutch. they say to pick up the car and drive it for the 10-12 days it will take to get parts. they'll fix it later they say. they will not provide a written statement of the problems they have found, as i requested. not sure if it is safe to drive, i would think that it is not safe. the dealer is walls ford, 2 merrill st, salisbury ma 01952. *js
When accelerating from a stop and when trying to increase speed, automatic transmission slips and shutters making it difficult to gain speed. this is particularly unsafe when merging into traffic. this is a automatic transmission ..... but it feels like i am driving a manual transmission and the clutch is slipping (if anyone has ever had that problem it feels the same) has been to the dealership 2 times and both times i only got temporary relief. i can honestly say that this car is unsellable because of this problem. so i'm stuck because it hasen't been repaired with long lasting results, and selling it is not an option. no one in there right mind would buy this car with what may be a major transmission problem looming.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle would not shift into the next gear without warning. the vehicle was driven to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the shaft sealer fractured and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred on three other occasions where the shaft sealer was replaced each time. the contact also stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle would not shift into the next gear after the transmission warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was driven to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission control module needed to be reprogrammed. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer and was diagnosed that the transmission control module was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 9,600.
As with over 100 other complaints, the transmission is very unstable. hesitation and almost dying at a stop or in slow bumper to bumper traffic is a safety hazard. attempting to merge on highways and attain higher speeds from a stop or slow (10-20 mph). grinding noise from front end at low speeds.. the hesitation in acceleration and jerking at slow speeds, is a safety hazard and as previously stated almost caused numerous accidents. i had it reprogrammed at one dealer, with no results, and just two days ago, on 1-2-2014, another dealer replaced parts on the transmission and called me and said my car was ready. after leaving the dealer, the car started making a rattling noise every time i would accelerate at just about any speed. took it back today, 1-3-2014, and had transmission tech ride with me. as soon as we pulled out from dealer onto highway, started making rattling noise and shuttering still happening.. now dealer has an actuator motor ordered. who knows if this is a fix or another patch. *tr
- while in drive and moving forward at 55 mph the transmission disengaged and no power was transmitted to the wheels of the vehicle for about 2 seconds in heavy traffic. this also happened at 15 mph going around a turn for 4 seconds before power to the w
This vehicle shutters, jerks at each stop. it feels like it gets no power when pressing on the gas pedal. sometimes its light shuttering/jerking, other times its violent shuttering and jerking to the point where it jerks so bad the car shuts off. we have been to the dealer and they keep telling us its a "green clutch" and just keep driving it to get it broken in. we do not see an improvement over after a week of daily driving. we have visited many sites and realize there are alot of people who purchased a 2012,2013 ford focus having this same problem. *tt
As i was coming to a stop at a light, an alert came on instructing me to "stop safely now!" and the power train lost all power. *tr
Stop safely now (ssn) came on while i was driving 45 mph. this caused power to be cut and would not allow any further driving of the car, which only allowed for coasting to a stop while in traffic. *tr
In august 2013 after owning car short time took to dealer and service manager drove it with us and said many people think there is an issue with shuddering and delayed acceleration but it's just the high performance transmission.. not to worry. the car continually got worse over time and we got a recall notice and took in in oct 2014. they replaced the clutch and seals. may 5 the car got really back on long drive home from la. overheated and then warning light came on. turned car off and back on warning light went off and drove car home shuddering very bad and with extreme delayed acceleration. had cars behind us on hills honking and almost rear ended us... took car in may 15 they said it wasn't safe to drive and they had it for 2 months to fix clutch, seals and adaptive learning sensor, replaced tcm, electronics. 8/8/15 while on freeway steering assist fault notification - service required. pulled off and when i tried to start car again i couldn't move the steering column. called nearby ford dealer and they said you can't drive it - safety issue. it is currently in the shop again. having this happen on a freeway is terrifying - cars honking at you, trying to steer off, etc. this is a danger and ford needs to take care of it instead of continuing to do temp fixes!!!!!
This is an electric vehicle. while approaching an intersection, the "stop safely now" light came on. i attempted to accelerate to make it through the intersection, but realized i had no power. i coasted to a stop at the curb. there was a hazard symbol displayed, but i could not bring up any other information to give a clue what might be behind the problem. i noted the green vehicle symbol light was off, indicating power is not available to the drive train. i tried doing different things to restart the car, but all attempts failed. the car was towed to a ford service center. after the car was rolled backwards off the tow-truck flatbed, i tried once again to start the car. it started right up, as if nothing had been wrong. *tr
The transmission in the car started to behave erratically once we had ~2500 miles. it was making horrible grinding noises while shifting gears. it was shifting between gears (up/down/up/down) while ascending hills like it couldn't decide what gear to be in. it seemed to have lost power such that pressing the accelerator was not resulting in an expected increase in speed. it started to roll backwards occasionally when stopped on a hill, immediately after removing my foot from the break. on several occasions it would lurch forward while coming to a stop. occasionally it is unable to find the appropriate gear, or stays in a gear well after it should have shifted to a higher gear. it often shudders, often to a point that it feels like it is going to stall, when accelerating from a stop. in general, we don't feel safe driving this car between the random lurches/jumps and the random lack of power/response to the throttle. *tr
This is actually the 3rd time in a month this occurred. the "stop safely now" warning comes up. 1st time on 7/29, i was able to safely pull into a parking lot. the car would not restart, and the wrench symbol displayed. turned off and tried again 5 minutes later, and the car worked fine. the next day, the car gave no notice as i moved to accelerate at a green light. a clunk, and no power, and the "stop safely" now warned occurred at the same time. i turned the hazard lights on, a pedestrian assisted me in pushing the car out of the traffic. it restarted 5 minutes later, i drove it straight to the ford dealership. they replaced the computer did the software update. after waiting over 2 weeks for the car, the "stop safely now" occurred again 5 days after being released from the dealership. this time, i was able to safely pull over. i took it back to the dealership, and do not know how long it will to take to fix the issue. i no longer feel safe driving this car, knowing the power can be disabled anywhere at any time. i hope ford takes these issues seriously. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated to shift gears and shook. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where it was stated that the clutch needed to be repaired. the vehicle was repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 1,000.
I lease two ford focuses; one for me and one for my daughter (under my wife's ownership). the car has stalled on me twice and once on my daughter. the first time it happened at speed of 35 miles per hour in june 2013 and the second time at less than 2 miles hour in august 2013. the first time, it asked me to pull over to the side and stalled. i pulled over and parked the car, looked at the wheels thinking that it may have happened due to low air, however, nothing. i shut down the car and then restarted after two minutes, it started just fine. that is until the second time when it actually happened at the corner of 11th and j street in sacramento, ca. i got out of the city garage made a right turn on 11th to make a left on j street. at the light, it just shut down with the warning without ability to pull over. i had to waive the drivers behind me to go around. i could not do much. same thing, after two minutes, the car restarted. at both times, the car was fully charged. similarly, this happened to my daughter, who freaked out and she called me. i told her it may be glitch as it had happened to me the first time around. she pulled over, parked, waited for two minutes, restarted and so far her car is fine. whom should i report this to? the first time, it gave me time to pull over, however, the second time, it just shut down. i thought ford knew about it thus did not report. please help me report this. i love the car as there is no more gas station trips, however, it needs to be addressed. When driving on residential roads, i often feel my 2013 ford focus stall or jerk. often times there are glitches in the electrical wiring of locks and also in the radio. the door will stay locked after hitting the unlock button on the inside multiple times. the radio will not turn on, unless i turn off and re-turn on the car. as for the stalling, it often stalls when going anywhere from 30-65 mph. *tr
This applies to the ford focus electric. i was backing out of my driveway when i heard a load clunk. i instantly felt the power steering fail and the motor cease function (lost all power rendering me immobolized in the middle of the street). the dash displayed the warining "stop safely now". this indicates an electrical fault. note the battery had a full charge. the symptom persisted.as i was able to drive a few blocks with the same behaviour. i was able to drive the car back to my house and called roadside assistance. i was lucky i was not on the freeway when this happended. *tr
Would not shift into reverse. this was the only time it would not shift but raised a red flag. after turning off ignition and trying again it finally engaged, all other shifter selections were fine; n, d. soon thereafter i began noticing a strange grinding noise coming from the front end accompanied by a slight vibration upon acceleration from a stop or when negotiating a curve at slow speed. we left for tucson soon thereafter towing our focus behind our motorhome. the car continued with the same issues as described above so i took the car to a local dealer. they test drove and said they didn't find anything wrong and if it happened again to bring it back. soon after.this we drove from tucson to albuquerque and the car shuddered and hesitated while shifting so badly i felt it was unsafe. returned to dealer in tucson two more times where they finally "fixed" it. lasted two days now worse than ever. i feel that this car is very unsafe and should be taken off the road. i have been driving several vehicles since 1958 and this is my worse driving experience ever. i will be making an appointment with my local dealer today to see if they have a solution. i know i am one of many ford owners with these same transmission issues. ford should be made to issue a recall. from what i have read ford considers good fuel mileage more important than safety. if my local dealer can't fix the problem so that i feel safe driving our focus i will be going back to toyota or subaru asap. another "big three" failure. i am from michigan and am embarrassed to drive this car assembled in michigan with a transmission that is total junk. *tr
I have had problems with the focus since i bought it in 2013. the transmission shudders, vibrates, goes back on hills and rattles. i finally gave up after several attempts to get it fixed and being told its all normal. my frustration with ford and its dealers is that they knew about this problem long before i bought mine, why were they still selling them to unaware buyers. i had bought a 2010 focus from a different dealer and had to return that one because the transmission broke a week after i got it and only after i notified the bureau of auto repair did they exchange the car. now i feel stuck with another lemon but no one will do anything about this problem. it's been 2 years and i'm still trying to get someone to do something about this, not just for me but for all the consumers that were conned into buy this lemon. i will never buy a ford again.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated while driving approximately 2 mph, the transmission surged without prior warning. the failure recurred intermittently while traveling at extremely low speeds. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who informed that there was no defect and that the unexpected surge was the characteristic of the transmission. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 12.
With 9100 miles on it...while driving on the freeway the rpms revved to over 7000 and then down to zero. all gears were lost and had to coast to a stop on the shoulder. towed to dealer where they downloaded software to it and said it was fine. *tr approximately 1000 miles later the same thing happened while crossing traffic on a highway. towed to a dealer where a clutch motor was replaced. with 14320 miles on it the same thing happened while turning off a freeway ramp. towed to dealer where the car was taken back in trade for a new car. vehicle was powerless to move and could have resulted in injury or death of occupants due to shutdown occurring while moving in traffic at high speeds. *tr
In august of 2013 i brought my 2013 ford focus into the dealership with transmission issues. i owned the car for 6 months at that point with 6,000 miles on it. car was shuddering at lower gears, transmission felt like it was slipping, at times rpm would rev up higher than normal, grinding noise could be heard from the engine at times, loss of power and a couple times complete loss of acceleration while trying to turn across traffic. i took the car into my local ford dealership and a couple of software updates were applied to the car. this fixed it for maybe 3 months then i started noticing loss of power in the car again, and now recently all of the same issues i originally had, and listed above, have resurfaced. current miles are 14,000. i can't even go up a hill faster than 25 miles an hour, the car fails to change gear and engine rpms rev and the transmission is slipping everyday. my car is back at ford, this time for a week while they try to determine what is wrong with it. this is not normal operating for a car no matter what ford says. loss of power while trying to cross traffic is definitely a safety concern. *tr
This vehicle has been into ford service for a continuous oil leak from the transmission 4 times, 8/5/13, 8/25/14, 1/13/15, and 4/15/15. the transmission oil is leaking onto the clutches causing violent shuttering when the vehicle is shifting. *tr
Shifts rough (hard),slips when going up hill, put it in park you have to use e brake, clicks loud if sitting on a hill rolls back some and makes loud noise as if park is not hold the car still engine makes starting noise for hours after turning engine off. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle was equipped with a power shift dual clutch automatic transmission, which allowed the computer to shift the transmission. the contact noticed that the vehicle would hesitate and shutter whenever he attempted to accelerate to highway speeds. while driving approximately 62 mph, the vehicle suddenly failed to drive forward. the contact depressed the accelerator pedal; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate forward. the contact had to coast the vehicle to the side of the road and had the vehicle towed to the coccia ford lincoln dealer (577 e main st. lilkes-barre, pa 18702; 570-823-8888). the dealer stated that the clutch, tcm, and shields failing was a common issue with the vehicle; however, there was no repair just replacements of parts. the vehicle was repaired approximately five times, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure; however, the contact had not received a response. the approximate failure mileage was 69,573. updated 10/2/2017*js
The engine and ford selectshift dual clutch transmissions are dangerous. they are very unpredictable.the transmission shudders, grinds and bucks in traffic. it has caused me to nearly hit the vehicle in front of me before. the engine's electronic throttle is also very unpredictable. sometimes when i try to merge into traffic and press the accelerator, nothing at all happens for a couple of seconds. this has nearly caused me to be struck by another vehicle before. *tr
My 2013 ford focus has been in the shop 4 times, one of which took over month to get the part. my transmission is clearly faulty and whenever i accelerate to 20mph or 45mph my transmission isn't properly shifting. on 8/18 my transmission felt like it was going to drop out while i was on the highway in michigan. this is after just receiving my vehicle back from ford service within the last 7 days. i don't feel safe driving this vehicle at high speeds with a faulty transmission.
I was coming back from school to my house. the engine light came on asking me to pull over safely. i did that, the car stalled. i freaked out, and called my dad. he said not to worry as it had happened to him in his ford focus electric too. he asked me to wait for two minutes and then restart the engine. i did that, the car was fine then. please talk to my dad if you have any questions. his contact information is listed below. Purchased car new and from day one it was evident there we're transmission issues. had back to the deal several times the said they reprogrammed the transmission but it did not help, maybe even made it worse? when driving or pulling out the car would shake and shutter very bad. this was a constant issue from the day i drove it off of the sales lot.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that while trying to accelerate, the transmission slipped. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who could not duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 8,700.
While driving residential streets at approximately 25mph, the car sounded an unfamiliar warning tone along with the message "stop safely now" - at which point, i coasted the car to a stop (unfortunately this happened to be in the middle of an intersection). even though i had no throttle control at this point, the car refused to shut down after multiple presses of the "start" button. i eventually took my foot off the brake, hit "start" again, opened the door and this seemed to cycle the car to "off" mode. i then tried again to start the car and it worked - after about 10 seconds of driving the "stop safely now" error came on again. i pulled over this time and shut the car down for 10 minutes - i was able to later drive the car home. waited an hour and decided to have my wife video tape me while driving incase this happened again.. the error occurred 3 more times and is all on tape - all while coming to a stop or accelerating from a stop. i shudder to think what would happen if this occurred on my normal commute on the carpool lanes of the 405 or 110 -or worse, decided to power down in the middle of a left hand turn!- this would be a huge liability and safety risk for myself and family. the car is currently with ford and i'm in a rental until we have a resolve - i didn't find out until after signing a 3 year lease that this is now a well known issue (at least to the nhtsa and on many ford forums and in articles on the internet) it's an amazing car and i hope ford figures this out very quickly. *tr
On july 17, 2013, i bought a 2013 ford focus from the ford dealer in my area. on july 18, 2013, i took the car into the ford dealer, because as i accelerated from every stop, and from some left and right turns, the transmission produced very loud grinding noises as the gears shifted and the car would jerk or shudder. at this time the transmission was reprogrammed per tsb 14 0047. having owned the car for one day, it was a shocking revelation to be told that the cars behavior was typical for my particular make and model. i was told it was not a safety issue and that i could bring it back whenever i felt it necessary. on september 16, 2014, i took the car back to the ford dealer with the same complaints. the work done at this time as written on the invoice was as follows: programmed pcm and tcm road tested reset transmission strategy. i was reassured, yet again, that these car behaviors were characteristic of the 2013 focus and that i need not worry about safety for myself and others. although the reprogramming made a positive difference, my car has never been without some gear grinding, skipping, and shuddering on acceleration and during slow l and r turns. i have not returned for service because i was assured it was not a safety issue. essentially, i learned to live with it. on september 22, 2015, i received a letter from ford motor company notifying me they were providing a software update program 15b22 for the transmission control module and customer satisfaction program14m02. the language in this letter is, quite frankly, alarming, leading me to believe that the transmission in the 2013 focus is, in fact, a serious safety issue. i have already scheduled an appointment for the update. please advise me of further action that can be taken.
Stop safely now indicator came on while driving vehicle. at a stop light approximately 5 minutes later, the vehicle lost all power in front of intersection. this is an all electric vehicle. i placed transmission in park and attempted to power cycle car with no success for approximately 2 minutes. once i opened the driver side front door, the car was then able to power back on. the "stop safely now" warning did not reappear. *tr
