We have classified the 793 complaints from 2013 Ford Focus about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
The car abruptly shudders/jolts between 0-20 mph. this occurs mainly during acceleration. the first time i took it to have it looked at, i was provided a piece of paper from ford explaining that this was a typical, and normal, characteristic of the transmission within the 2013 ford focus models. the issue was verified, but no maintenance was performed. i again took my vehicle in for the same issue 06/06/2013, where it was one again verified, yet no maintenance was performed because ford was still having dealerships give customers the piece of paper explaining the transmission. i asked that when the transmission blows if it would be covered, and i was told 'yes.' the car was taken in again 02/17/2014 for the same issue, verified, and maintenance was performed this time because ford has recognized that it indeed was an issue, and not a characteristic. the problem continued to exist, and my transmission was removed and cleaned on 06/30/2014. my car has gone in for additional service due to this shuddering transmission; i was turned away once when i arrived a dealership on a saturday for this issue, and was told 'it was a known issue,' and on april 22, 2015, i was told i needed a new clutch, which is on backorder for 12 weeks. the problem will not go away; i do not feel safe driving my car.
My focus has been in the shop 3 times to keep fixing the same transmission problem and now it is going back in to the shop for the fourth time for the same problem. the transmission keeps on shuddering, jerk s and slips out of gear. it has rolled back on take off. the engine goes but the transmission doesn't. i have took my car to into 3 dealers hoping that another can fix the problem. i feel unsafe for my wife driving it to work. she has to be very careful when she gets onto the highway and at stops. she has to drive with both feet so the car won't go backwards. she also has to worry about the cars behind her when she tries to take off at stop lights. ford has offered me a free oil change which i thought was funny. my wife has to drive it to work we have no choice in the matter since it is our only car. if my wife gets hit or if she hits another car i will be getting a lawyer because ford knows about our problems. i asked to trade it for another but they don't want to fix the problem or do a trade. they did offer me 1400 dollars off a new 30,000 car but we just bought this one and can not afford another at this time. please help us get this unsafe matter fixed. thank you very much from my family to yours on this very unsafe matter.[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle vibrated and lost power, without warning. the vehicle was taken to the johnson city ford dealer, located at 207 princeton rd, johnson city, tn 37601, where the clutches and transmission were repaired. the failure recurred several times. the manufacturer was made aware of the failures and referred the contact back to the dealer. the failure was no t repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 300.
in 2/13, my husband and i purchased a '13 ford focus from brewster ford in ny. unfortunately, our car has never worked correctly. it randomly loses power. it feels like the gas pedal doesn't respond sometimes when we try to accelerate. our car is currently in their service center for the 4th attempt to repair the problem without any intervention. 3 of the master mechanics, scotty, carlisle, and anthony, say they have driven the car multiple times without repairing anything because they claim that they cannot recreate the problem. 5/28/13 the hesitation and nonresponsive acceleration increased and we brought our car to the service center and paid for an oil change. we were given the car back and told there was no problem found. 6/14/13 we brought the car back to the dealer for the same problem. there was an update for the computer and we thought it might be fixed. 12/9/13 we came back to the service center for the same problem, but this time the car shut off while my husband was driving on the nys thruway and this time the check engine light was on when i dropped it off. again the car was given back and we were told no problem found. they said that the check engine light was not on. it had been on for two days prior. 12/18/13 we brought our car back to the service center. after we called ford corporate for help, the service manager, danielle got involved. the gas mileage dropped at this time from 32-27 miles/gallon combined. our car was at brewster fords service center for over 30 days without being contacted once. when my husband called to check on the status, he was told they were waiting on a service engineer to come out. after speaking to angela, the regional manager from ford, we were told that the service center is unable to recreate the problem and we should again take our unsafe car. 1/23/14 today the regional manager agreed to approve a second opinion.
Vehicle has been serviced 3 times, first time when the car was 2 days old (to me). vehicle lags, grinds, over-revs, under-revs and stutters on hills and sometimes flat land too. particularly bad when turning. 3 attempted fixes, no real improvements, only different issues got better while others got worse. first attempted fix claimed a section of the transmission was replaced, second they found a leak in the transmission although i found nothing in my garage and 3rd was my complaining of the issues not being resolved yet. after 3rd fix, car is as bad as ever. *tr
From day 1, the transmission has excessively slipped through 1st gear as though the clutch is not being properly engaged (dual clutch transaxle). at one point, the car bucked upon acceleration forcefully as though it stalled. the problem is most severe when ambient temperatures are over 90 degrees (common here in arizona). the pcm has been reprogrammed twice by the dealership and after the first 1000 miles, the slippage subsided (for the most part). recently, the car was in for an oil change and when i got the car back, the 1st gear slippage was back very noticeably. i'm not sure if the dealership reprogrammed the pcm during its visit as there is nothing on the paperwork stating such. at times, making left hand turns in traffic is very scary because of the cars hesitation to accelerate. it's obviously a programming issue with how the clutch is being engaged by the computer... as though the clutch is only being half engaged during 1st gear acceleration. *tr
Vehicle shudders between shift points, hesitates as though stalled and suffers from power train rattling. even though the vehicle power train has been reprogrammed multiple times as well as clutch assembly repair and replacement the issues return. *tr
Transmission stuttered, jerked upon receipt of ownership. northgate ford serviceman, upon report, assured me the car was under warranty. transmission broke after the warranty and i was stuck with all the cost of repair plus rental car until the fotrd focus was repaired. i will accept nothing but a total reimbursement of my costs for repair and car rental.
Vehicle has had oil leaking into engine compartment since purchased in november 2012. at 3000 miles, rear engine seal replaced - leaks continued. rear main engine seal replaced again at 8000 miles - engine compartment leaks continued. after two more visits to dealer and two additional trip to different dealers, third service dept. claims that transmission is source of leak, not engine. if this is the case, then vehicle has been driven for over 11,250 miles with insufficient transmission lubricant - great cause for concern. *tr
Ford focus electric vehicle stops suddenly with "stop safely now". when this occurs driver (me) looses all ability to accelerate. this even occurred today and left us in danger on the highway while we nervously waited for professional assistance. many reports of this exact issue with this make/model vehicle on the public forums. concern of loss of power train could mean injuries or death depending on the moment a car looses it's ability to drive while mobile. *tr
I purchased the 2013 ford focus brand new on 2-09-13. car barely has 1800 miles on it. while slowing down in a school zone to 15mph, i noticed the car seemed to lose power, and feel shaky. once past the school zone i accelerated to 20mph and car shifted roughly into gear with a bumping noise. i pulled over and stopped and turned off the engine. after restarting car initially seemed fine. exactly one week later same thing happened again when in supermarket parking lot. this time however the orange engine service light that looks like an outline of the engine appeared on the dashboard panel. i stopped the car again. when restarting the light went out but reappeared on the 2 mile drive home from the store. car also seemed to lose power and not accelerate when i needed it to. i called my dealership 1st thing and was told it's most likely a sensor issue and very minor but i made an appointment and took the car in. the dealership ran computer diagnostics and service mgr. came in and told me 2 error codes showed up of transmission malfunction/ and possible failure! a brand new car!!! they started talking about replacing the transmission and the on board computer, etc.. but dealership can't repair my car at this time because a specialist they don't have on staff needs to be called in. so i have an un safe, unreliable new car sitting in my driveway. 15 calls to dealership and to ford's customer relations number and i can't even get an appointment to get the car looked at further to determine how defective it is!!! what a lemon! no matter how this is resolved, will never do business with ford again. they seem unconcerned with the safety issues this defect is causing and they have the worst customer service i have ever dealt with!! *tr
The transmission does not shift right. it hesitates, jerks and surging. at lower gears or speed under 40, the car is difficult to control. it shift to higher gear when the speed is not high enough for the gear. this causes poor acceleration and dangerous when merging into highway from ramp. *tr
Transmission surges during acceleration and deceleration. almost like insufficient fuel being received by engine. dealer stated that this is due to ford "powershift" transmission and not fuel line. causes concern for safety and future performance after more mileage. this has existed since purchas of vehicle in may 2013 and still exists now after 11000 miles.
Vehicle has been leaking oil since it was purchased. (2) ford dealerships have attempted repairs multiple times to stop engine oil leak(s), all of which have been unsuccessful. was under vehicle on 5/12/13 and noticed there is still engine oil leaking from area around engine/transmission. defect allowing engine to run without optimal amount of oil, leaking oil creates fuel for potential fire, used engine oil is known carcinogen, which is being deposited within engine compartment and allowed access to passenger cabin. *tr
Every recall event for my 2013 ford focus, i have encountered. after a year and half of continued trips to and being without my car for service. the transmission issues still not resolved along with the electrical issues. the stereo display goes blank, at times shows incorrect date and clock jumps to different hours. the car lunges forward when you get to about 25 to 30 mph or hesitates when you excel. when you put in park it will lunge forward or act like you've popped the clutch even when brake is on. it shudders, has bump & bang noises, lunges, suspension noises. i can feel bumping/thumping under my feet when turning corners. have had issues with the gas tank assembly and fuel system gauge (this part has been fixed) continued issues with the digital panel, intermittent erratic cluster radio, clock and sync issues that the service department cannot duplicate. when i have issues with the digital panel, i take a picture. once i turn vehicle off and back on it sometimes clears it up. i've complained about tires noises and ride, they say tires are fine. i went to the dealership to just trade it in and the dealer suggested i contact ford motor to have them buy it back. i have placed a complaint on the ford website, but have yet to receive a response. i am afraid to drive this vehicle but have no other choice. do i have to ruin my credit by just dropping my vehicle off and walking away for them to take back. ford motor company does not make it easy to talk to someone regarding my vehicle. they should be more accessible now before something tragic happens. *tr
We purchased this car brand new from the dealer. from the very beginning it shifted very rough and rattled skipping from 1st to 2nd very hard and we heard a sound like dragging cardboard. the first time it was taken to the dealer they said "it was normal" and that the car had to get adjusted to our style of driving. they did computer check and nothing wrong. we thought this was ridiculous, but continued to drive this car with same sounds, sometimes more than others. we have taken this car to 2 dealers with both saying basically the same thing, that ford messed up with this transmission and it is just the way it is, nothing is wrong with the car and it is safe. our daughter does not feel safe in this car when it lurches forward or doesn't shift gears when she is trying to accelerate into speeding traffic. we want something done to fix this problem. *tr
Vehicle abruptly lost drivetrain power and came to a sudden stop in the left-hand lane of a major surface street in san jose. the vehicle suddenly displayed the warning 'stop safely now". attempts to restart or reboot the car failed leaving us dangerously stranded in moderate traffic for over 20 minutes until a nearby resident helped us to push vehicle to safety. all electrical systems on the vehicle continued to function but the vehicle was immobilized. pushing the vehicle was very difficult, as if the brakes were engaged. the ford dealer reported that the regenerative braking system was engaged and could not be disengaged. ford dealership reported over 30 diagnostic trouble codes appearing on the vehicle that proved to be misleading. inexperience of service team with electrical vehicles provided low confidence that they understood and repaired the cause of this failure. ford motor company instructed the dealership to replace the electric motor and control module. ford motor company agreed to refund or replacement of this vehicle. *tr
Brand new 2013 automatic. apparently, my automatic has a manual transmission to improve fuel efficiency. around may my vehicle started acting up when i would pull forward or back up - the transmission would shudder causing a delay in acceleration. i took the car to the dealer who did a software update, no change. they told me to drive it for awhile to allow it to reset. after about another few hundred miles the problem was still there- took it back and they put in a new clutch. same issues - same response, drive it for awhile and let it break it. took it back - told it was within standards and i was to expect the shudder!? it's brand new - according to the sale rep and maint supervisor its part of the design, but customers and even ford sales and maint was not told until complaints came in. ford will do nothing but tell me i can take it for another opinion and pay for it. no matter, they feel it performs within their standards. the problem is i'm paying for the car and when i pull into traffic i expect it not to pause - that is dangerous and could cause me to get hit. this is unacceptable! i can't believe ford will not make this right. *tr
We purchased the 2013 focus at apple ford in red lion pa. we had that car approx 1 month and it would not go in reverse, we were told the jerking grinding hesitations were all "normal". after over a week in the garage it was determined by dealer they would swap out for another focus same year, but had more miles than the original focus. the first vin # was [xxx]. we continue to have all the above symptoms with the 2nd focus they traded us. i am taking back to garage this week for worsening issues with my transmission. i called ford and they told me that they (ford) could not send a copy of the letter that was mailed out explaining they have extended the warranty to 100,000 miles or 7 years because it is done by a "third party" ?? this includes the input shaft seals, the clutch & or a software calibration. my car is paid off in full and it is ridiculous that i am having to waste time going back and forth with ford about this. i have filed several complaints with no resolution. what happens when the warranty expires, by then will i even have a car that is drivable? i do not even feel safe driving m car, therefore i only use it around home and never on trips or anywhere else. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
After an accident, tried to drive the car home and the car kept stalling out while trying to give it gas. i had the car towed to the dealer, they repaired the body work and said that the switch for the gas to shut off had to be reset. picked up from dealer and the car kept stalling out and shaking when trying to take off or accelerate the car. took the car back to the dealer and they said it could be the clutch in the transmission. dealer kept for a week and could not find anything wrong. ford is aware there is a problem with the clutches in the ford focus. they service department stated so far he has put in 5 clutches on the 2013 ford focus. dealer refuses to do anything unless ford will do a recall. *tr
Was told by dealer transmission was normal if it jerks hard and grinds and knocks, dealer was checking transmission the whole time. transmission had a seal leak( dealer stated you can run those transmission without fluid), dealer fixed so they say, dealer left ratchet the size of my forearm on transmission when i pulled away from dealer i thought transmission had fell out. dealer could have been bought for a dollar. dealer placed dye in transmission offered free oil changes no thank you i replied. three days later back in shop transmission still bad along with a bad miss. now the clutch plate is bad. got car back drove three more days, car shaking was told cant do anything about that( didn't do the hard shaking until they messed with transmission), transmission still isn't right in low gears hard shifting and grinds . took car back to dealer refused service i was told to take car somewhere else that nothing was wrong with. we feel all the transmission fluid leaked out causing all this. this car was taking in to dealer after i came off a exit all was clear transmission would not in shift in gear to go all to soon a semi-truck was on me if he had not had room to get over it would have been fatally. that's not a new normal transmission . i have filed a lemon law suit. ford notified made all the excuses that everyone else has been told, car will get better the more you drive it, parts on backorder, that's the way it is, car has to learn your driving habits. all the same stuff. *tr
Back in may my husband and i were traveling in stop and go traffic and noticed that my brand new 2013 ford focus se was grinding and making horrible noises while shifting. especially shifting in lower gears. as i remind you... this is an automatic. as of today this is the 4th time that it has been back to the dealership and still the problem is not fixed. the car continues to jerk and make mental on metal grinding noises. today when speaking to the dealer i was told that a ford engineer was looking at it and trying to fix it. remind you that the clutches have already been replaced, the computer has been updated, and the computer has been reprogrammed. when i called today they said that they had to keep it over night. this is totally ridiculous and this is a new vehicle!!! of the almost seven months that i have owned the focus it has sit in the shop a total of 20 days. come on ford!!!! *js
I purchased a 2013 ford focus titanium in october of 2012. shortly after, the transmission began to hesitate and shudder when accelerating or driving at low speeds, including pulling into and out of the driveway of my home. it then began rolling backwards on inclines. i have never had an automatic transmission freely roll backwards on an incline, much less on that is not very steep. i brought it into the dealership where i bought the car for repairs. they did a reprogram on the vehicle and sent me on my way. shortly after it began doing it all again. i am currently waiting on a reply from ford as to what my next step needs to be to get this resolved. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle failed to shift into gear and when the gears engaged the started to shake. the failure continued to occur continuously over a period one year. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the clutch and the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 34,037.
Total loss of throttle, stalling in traffic, shuddering and erratic shifting with the ford powershift transmission. since purchasing car new in 2013, i had problems with the powershift transmission, initial problems was a noise that sounded like the muffler was dragging the road, problems got worse as mileage increased. returned the car to several dealers for diagnosis, was told that the transmission is operating as designed and no repairs were attempted. problem got worse and i had experienced total loss of throttle in traffic on several occasions, car stalled and jerked in traffic causing neck to snap back. after repeated attempts to get the problem fixed with two different ford dealers, a customer satisfaction letter came from ford detailing issues with powershift transmission. i had to take my car into the dealer again, for diagnosis and was told they got it the transmission to fail the thresholds after 6 attempts, which warranted replacement of the clutch pack and internal seals, supposedly a faulty design that allowed oil from the gearbox to leak into the clutch pack causing slippage, noise and issues. ford returned the car 5 days later, issues went away for 3 weeks or so, and have started to reappear in the same fashion as when the car was purchased new and is getting worse each day, with over 1000 miles on the car since service. as of today i have experienced shuddering and total loss of throttle in traffic, a few times were dangerous in pulling out in front of oncoming traffic the car could have caused me to get into an accident, also lunges in slow moving traffic. i am afraid to let my wife drive the car due to the behavior of the transmission and see again i will soon have to return to another dealer (#3) for correction. *tr
Purchased a ford focus in 2013 and have had consistent issues since purchase. am currently on the waitlist (parts are back-ordered and not expected for 3-4 months) for the second clutch replacement. car shudders when accelerating. feels unsafe to drive as i can't predict when it will happen. this is a known transmission issue that ford has acknowledged, however, the clutch replacements can not be the fix since i have already done that. they have also reprogrammed my "brain" so that wasn't the fix either. now, for the next 3-4 months i have to continue driving an unsafe vehicle waiting for parts. this vehicle should be recalled before thousands of ford focus drivers get t-boned by a tractor trailer as their car shudders it's way across an intersection. the nhtsa needs to step in, as ford isn't aggressively fixing this issue. *tr
Purchased this vehicle on march 30th, 2013 and have had constant transmission problems ever since. the transmission grinds, lurches, rolls backwards on hills, on some occasions refuses to shift gears, squeaks and rattles. i have taken my vehicle into davies ford in charleroi, pa (which is documented) for service and they have tried to reprogram the shift points. this has lessened the symptoms of the vehicle but they are still persistent at different levels of severity. some days there aren't any signs of trouble and other days the vehicle grinds and lurches. i have been told that these are characteristics of the dct transmission. the problems have consistently occurred between the purchase date of march 2013 to the current date of 02/07/14. *tr
Transmission sputtering, hiccuping going through low gears. sometimes it seems fine. *tr
Purchased my car new transferred from a local dealer. had 40 miles on it when i bought it. after driving 160 miles noticed transmission banging and stuttering when trying to accelerate. took to apple ford in red lion pa, is in svc ctr told me transmission needs pulled out of car and parts replaced. at this point i left car at dealership, will not take this defective car home with me. have asked for a replacement car. no resolution. *tr
The 2013 ford focus has a dual clutch automatic transmission which is a design defect. the vehicle stalls, bucks, jerks and rolls backwards on inclines. had i known these about all of the complaints surrounding this vehicle, i never would have purchased it. the vehicle is only 5 months old and needs the clutches to be replaced. this transmission is a safety hazard and falls well short of performance expectations for an alleged automatic transmission. *tr
Car transmission constantly slips/lurches and grinds. dealer says this is "normal". car has been close to several accidents due to transmission slipping/lurching at intersections i do not feel safe to drive this car. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that when attempting to accelerate, the vehicle would jerk and hesitate to respond. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis where the contact was informed that the software for the transmission would need to be updated. the vehicle was repaired. eight hundred miles later the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to a dealer and the software was again updated. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the contact was informed that the failure was characteristic of the vehicle but not a defect. the failure mileage was 100 and the current mileage was unknown.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that the transmission failed. the vehicle rolled backward while the contact was driving uphill. the vehicle also jerked when shifted from first to second gear and would lose acceleration power when driving in traffic. the vehicle was taken to the dealer numerous times for the failure. the dealer test drove the vehicle and was able to duplicate the loss of acceleration power only. the transmission computer was reprogrammed; however the failure was not corrected and the dealer advised the contact that the transmission was operating at normally. the failure mileage was 3,000 and the current mileage was 10,202.
Complained to service writer when i brought the car in with the stuttering problem when i start to drive. was told that it is because ford had redesigned a manual transmission to make it automatic to increase the gas mileage. was told to bring it back if got worse. it has and much worse, now it not only shutters but it has a knocking sound. i noticed a black ring around the area where the two pieces are bolted together. i have to drive 24 miles to work each day on the interstate and have major concerns about being stranded on the side of road. i was told that ford had got it's act together finally and decided to get the focus se. worst mistake i made. should have bought the kia soul like i planned or the chevy cruze. *tr
I am leasing this car and got it in march 2013. i have had it in the shop 3 times already and the dealers, 2 different ones, keep telling me it is just normal. i have been driving a long time and even drove a 5 speed, but never have i had these issues. grinding, shuddering, jerking in lower speeds and i sometimes think the transmission is going to fall out of the car. it has been over a year since i have had it in the shop, as i work and it seems to be worthless for me to take it in. i am not sure if i can file a lemon law complaint, but not sure what else i can do. *tr
Transmission shudder, rough shift, hesitation, grinding noise on acceleration. unsafe to drive on slippery road conditions
Vehicle has leaked engine oil since new, which was first discovered at 500mi. engine oil contaminated clutch discs in automatic tranmission, which resulted in replacement of rear main engine seal, transmission clutches, etc. which was supposed to resolve problem. attempted repair took place at approx. 7500 mi. at 7800 mi, engine oil is still leaking oil, covering the bottom on the engine and pooling on the under-engine cover. suspect new clutch discs also contaminated, which is causing jerky transmission action in drive. *tr
When going up hills the car's transmission refuses to shift instantly and makes loud grinding noise. it would eventually shifts but the split seconds of not shifting causes me anxiety and implies a safety issue. i brought this problem to the attention of ford of kirkland's service department the first time in april and was told that the car was still "learning" my driving habits because it is still breaking in. the second time i brought my car in was in 12/2013, i was told that what i am experiencing is a known issue to the manufacturer and ford is trying to come up with a software fix. no one knows when the fix will be available while drivers like me are suffering. in filing this complaint, i hope that with a help from a your agency ford will pay more attention to its customers who are enduring this problem when driving their cars every day. *tr
Cpsc: i1340028a. 2013 ford focus. consumer stated after five days of purchasing the car it started having transmission problems. *ln
This car constantly grinds and shutters between the first few gears every day for the last 8 months of ownership. i bought this vehicle on feb 2013 and it only drove good for 2 months and the remaining time i've had it, has been on the shop over 4 times for the same exact transmission problems. symptoms; the transmission gears shifts incorrectly and makes louds grinding and shuttering noises. sometimes the the transmission has power and sometimes it doesn't. not to mention i almost got myself into 2 car accidents because of this vehicle, during stop and go traffic the gears get stuck and i almost rear ended the vehicle in front of me. please file a complaint to ford and nhtsa to have these dct transmissions fixed or recalled. *tr
Bought the car on saturday. on sunday, noticed a grinding noise coming from the transmission. also noticed transmission slipping between gears. car does not accelerate correctly and does not shift like it should. when on a decline, the car drifts backwards if you let off the brake to accelerate. took it to the dealer where i was told that this is all normal. ford has informed the dealer not to fix the issues. dealer said that ford does not have a solution to these problems. *tr
I was stopped at a busy intersection. when the light turned green i pressed down on the accelerator and immediately a warning tone went off, and a warning light lit up on the dash saying "stop safely now." then immediately after that a "yellow wrench" icon would intermittently illuminate. the car still had electricity to the dash, but would do nothing when the accelerator pedal was stepped on. the car was dead. i was unable to get the car out of gear, into park. i put my hazards on, but was very afraid of being rear-ended due to the intersection being so busy. i tried holding the on/off button and kept getting the same warnings. it was only by continuing to push the on/off button did i finally get the car to reset, and turn off, then on. when it finally started the warning messages were then gone. i called ford, and took the car the dealer who found no codes recorded. this is still a very small volume production car and there are quite a few people reporting the same behavior on the ford focus electric bulletin boards. some have had this occur while the car is in motion with the car becoming non-responsive and with the same "stop safely now" warnings.
We had problems with the transmission since we bought the car on 11/16/12. we experience sudden lurches forward when pressing on the gas pedal, delayed acceleration when taking of, sudden loss of forward propulsion, transmission slipping, delayed gear engagement, hard or erratic shifts and transmission engagement failure while driving. due to all these problems we once lost control of the car while driving on a city street at 55 miles per hour and had to stop on the side of the road. we have taken the car at least 8 times to get serviced and the the problem does not get resolved.
2013 ford focus. consumer writes in regards to transmission shuddering. *ld *tr
I purchased the car on 01/27/2013 with 25 miles on it. on 03/21/2013 i brought the car back to the dealership at 904 miles and told i thought there was an issue with the automatic transmission because it was noisy and shuddering when changing gears during acceleration. they checked it and said they "could not duplicate concern at this time." in september 2014 i received a letter about an extended warranty on the clutch #14m01. 09/22/14-09/29/14 at 10683 miles dealership drove and agreed there was transmission shudder and noise. "installed new clutch, seals and hardware." on 10/22/14 at 11311 miles i brought the car back because there was still transmission shudder and noise. they advised me to "drive between 2000 to 5000 miles for proper clutch break-in period." on 08/17/15 at 19158 miles i brought the car back with transmission shudder and noise. they verified my concern stating "raw failed event #2 333 event 12 504 no signs of trans leaks at this moment." nothing was done to fix the problem. on 09/21/15 at 20143 miles "excessive shudder under acceleration...raw failed reading bottom left of no leaks at this time sop clutch." i was told the new clutch was back ordered and drove my car until 10/14/15 at 20709 miles they "removed transmission replaced both inner input shaft seals half shaft seals replaced clutch reinstalled transmission re programmed tcm test drove ok." since then there has been some transmission shudder and some noise, but not nearly as loud as before. it has only been approximately two weeks since last clutch replacement.
This car started giving me problems shortly after i bought the car. at the time the dealership told me that it was normal function and that the car was expected to shudder slightly and to run it for a 1,000 miles to allow the car to adjust to my driving.when the shudder slowly became worse, i finally took the car in for service. since that first time, i have had the transmission replace 3 times and i cant ever count how many "software" updates. each update i get the same run around about driving it for 500-1000 miles to allow the system to reset. that is crap, and it never works. additionally, the last two updates i had to contact them...really if there is an update needed shouldn't they be contacting their consumer? the worse part is the the two times it acted up i was out of town when the car started acting up. i had to invest in aaa, just because i can't trust my "new" car. my biggest concern is that this problem could very easily cause a serious accident. it causes the car not to accelerate as it should: for example you go to pull out onto a road with plenty of time, but the car spudders and doesn't pick up speed or merging onto the express way and it doesn't accelerate as it should? i work in the transportation industry, i happen to work in their safety department and can tell you that i would never allow one of our trucks on the road that performed like my car does. (or should i say doesnt') it is a safety to me and the motoring public. there are multiple complaints and ford has done nothing but extend warranties to make up for the shotty product they have put out to market. in any other industry i could return a product that was crap, but with cars - you are just stuck! i have been fighting this battle for two years now. this is outrageous and someone needs to do something to hold ford accountable before someone is seriously injured or worse
