I have had transmission problems from day one. the car studded and stop from time to time. i almost got into an accident with my daughter when the car suddenly stopped on me because of faulty transmission. the radiator also went out. the steering gear locked up on me while i was driving and i almost had an accident with my kids in the car.

Steering freezes, makes a very dangerous moment, door window doesn't suddenly work. feel a recall should be in effect, chosen states have a recall on the steering, but not in texas, i'm a senior citzen, living off gove. benitfits , can't afford the price to fix, the vehicle was stationary, and one time in motion.

Started car and put it in gear to begin driving out of driveway. got a message in the info system that said "steering assist fault" ( think that is what it said) the car had no power steering. extremely hard to turn the wheel at all. shut the car off and restarted. same thing. shut the car off and started it later in the day to take it to the dealer and the error was gone and the power steering was fine. dealer said there were no codes to read. they could not reproduce the problem so nothing was done. scared to drive an unsafe car.

Received "steering assist fault " and complete loss of power steering. i had just begun to drive out the driveway. fortunately i did not make it onto the road.

The display on the dash reads "steering assist fault". it started as an intermittent failure that happened once the car was first started, the problem would go away after shutting down and restarting, that had been happening for a couple weeks. now it is a consistent problem. there is absolutely no assist in the power steering, makjng the car very difficult to maneuver at normal driving speed and near impossible to maneuver at very low speed, e.g. during parallel parking, u-turns, sharp turns, etc.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving approximately 35 mph, the steering locked. the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle and it resumed normal operation. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 15,922.

My 17 year old daughter was driving to basketball and all of the sudden she lost all power steering n it all locked up. thank gosh she was on a straight a way. i looked up to see if there any recalls n there's not. i have called ford 1800-392-3673 they said thy hv no complaints . i told them all the ones i saw on this sight but thy said they need anyone that has had this problem to call ford directly 1-800-392-3673 then hopefully thy will put a recall . so please everyone call ford n complain about the lost of power steering so we can save lives. thank you *tr

While driving m power steering goes out. also when first start car will indicate problem with power steering. will have to turn off car then start again to resolve issue. i started few months ago and has become progressively worse. i hope they recall this before someone gets hurt.

Steering went out at starting the car. this was just hours after dealer repaired some recalls., has never come back. "steering assist fault service req'" read out on dash. one ford dealer wants $125.00 to look at it after i mentioned steering. another has refused to answer calls. i discovered that dealers were warned about problems with steering but did not notify owners.

I was driving on a city street going 30mph when my steering started to get hard to steer but not impossible. when i pulled over i got a notification on my dash the "steering loss, stop safely". at that point there was no way what so ever to turn my steering wheel at all. all most seemed like it was locked. tried restarting the car and still no steering

Went to start my 2012 ford focus se on 3/3/16 and immediately received a message stating "power steering malfunction". the steering wheel felt like it locked up and was very difficult to turn. thank goodness i was in my driveway and not on the road with my kids in the car! we were able to get the car to apple ford in columbia md where they ran diagnostics and said we need to replace the the steering rack, which will cost $1,950!! after reading the forums, complaints and pending lawsuits online, it is clear that this is a common issue where several models are being recalled. my vin has not been associated with that recall, but i'm desperately hoping that it will soon. this is an electric issue causing the power steering to fail, and it's happening to so many ford owners. please take action!

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 5 mph, the steering malfunctioned. the vehice was diagnosed and repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 84,800.

On 2/25/16, after a severe rainstorm, i went to turn on my car and tried to turn on the wiper blades, but they would not come on. the next morning they did turn on. that afternoon, when starting my car, the wiper blades turned on without the control being activated. the blades continued to run even when the car was turned off and no keys were in the ignition. the only way to stop the blades was to disconnect the fuse from the box. this has happened twice when i was not aware of this and my car battery was dead when i went to start the car. i cannot use the wiper blades at this time as they will not turn off. according to ford motor co., this is not covered under the recall on the wiper blades since my car is out of warranty. i have had my car in the dealership to repair the defective clutch and it is still not repaired due to ford motor co not sending out the necessary parts in a timely manner. my car is shuddering and jerking when accelerating and changing gears on all types of roads. i have had this issue since i bought the car brand new. the cruise control on my car works intermittently. when the battery is disconnected and then reconnected, the cruise will work for a few days. ford technicians could not diagnose the problem. this has been a problem for as long as i have had the car.

Transmission shutters and slips and the power steering just shuts down at times, this is very dangerous. my wife was merging onto the interstate and the steering shuts down the engine still running. she has to shut the car off and start it again to get the power steering to work. this has happened around 10 times.

Electronic power steering failure occurred again with warning lights. i shut down the car and it came back on. the steering fairly frequently briefly stops working. i experience this typically while parked before getting out on the road.

I was driving home with my children and the alert light came on to say there was a steering problem then all of a sudden the car decided it wanted to steer itself into oncoming traffic. i could move the steering wheel so i slammed on the brakes and put car in reverse to get into the median before getting hit. my girls were screaming and crying. after cars passed i had to slam the steering wheel in order to pop it and drive like i was in mario cart to get home. this is ridiculous that this is not a recall when it is clearly a mechanical issue with this piece of crap car.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving various speeds, the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. mike bass ford (located at 5050 detroit road, village of sheffield, oh) was contacted and diagnosed that the battery was defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 48,289.

My power steering started working only intermittently and has now completely stopped working. my car is necessary for my job and so i have no choice but to drive it this way. i have done research and found that ford is aware of the problem and has recalled other models, but not the focus. i have contacted ford and was told that there is no recall for this on this model and that i would have to repair it at my expense.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that after turning on the vehicle, the instrument panel would display a warning message of "steering assist fault". the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering gear box would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

Electric power assist system - lost power steering. lost power steering several times when starting then reset it self when shut off. last time happened while daughter driving car. now at shop. being charged $2200 to fix while still paying on vehicle. irritating. i have had nothing but problems with this vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 10 mph, the steering wheel became inoperable without warning. the failure occurred randomly. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 92,000.

Focus has been under many recalls and at ford for repair multiple times for transmission. every 6 months issues occur causing me to take back into ford. last couple weeks i noticed intermittently, when i take foot off accelorator, rpms continue to increase, and car does not slow down, causing me to pump breaks multiple times to be able to stop. yesterday during a snow storm, i again took foor off accelerator, this time the car again would still continue to drive without my control, causing me to spin out, not once but three times. i did not get hit by other cars as everyone was going slow, but i did have to call into work as my car was not safe to drive. this is now a safety concern for my focus, and myself, and my paycheck. something has to give as ford, has offered nothing but to keep bringing it back when issues occur. this is not appropriate customer service, and i feel there is a huge safety concern for my vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that while driving at 55 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. there was an unknown warning message that illuminated. the vehicle was restarted and the steering wheel function as designed. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 43,000. ...updated 03-10-16 *bf the consumer stated that the epas system went offline. and the steering became difficult. the vehicle was restarted and the epas system returned. the failure occured while driving and attempting to climb a snow covered road. updated 11/2/2017*js

I had started my car and was backing out of a parking space at heb and i noticed that i did not have power steering, this happened before while i was trying to back out of my driveway, i restarted the car and the steering was back, now i'm afraid to drive my car. ford needs to address this issue before someone gets hurt or worse dead.

I just started to have and issue with a power steering malfunction on my 2012 car the wheel locked making difficult to move it or make it turn very dangerous issue that can cause a serious issue for the publics safety ford need to be accountable for this manufacture defect

My problem first started with the steering wheel locking up upon start of vehicle at random times. i could put the vehicle in forward or reverse and drive but the wheel wouldn't turn. i would turn the car off and on to get the wheel to finally start turning. after a few days of that, i started noticing problems with the steering at high speeds. while driving down the freeway i was having trouble maintaining a straight path. i would have to constantly make micro adjustments to correct my path. then i started noticing that at certain points while driving 65+ mph that my wheel would have spots that were difficult to turn. for example to merge from left lane to right lane would require excessive force and then would get easy again. this is not safe, it was snowing out and the jolt of the vehicle that results in my corrections caused me to slide and almost loose control at times. if a weaker person was driving the vehicle they might not be able to overcome the steering issues. i cant take the car on 55+ mph roads anymore because the steering is so bad i am constantly correcting and fighting the power steering. my car is currently in the ford shop and they said its a $1700 fix with no recall/warranty from ford. seems like there is an awful lot of issues with this steering system that all sound the similar. *js

Steering wheel locked (even though i had plenty of fluid). luckily i was pulling out of my driveway. if i had been on the road, this could have been a very serious matter. i was told i needed a gear asy - ste and it was a $1142.15 fix. the car is not that old and i only have $50k miles on it. plus i needed brakes.

Electronic power steering assist fails intermittently typically upon starting of the vehicle. sometimes the problem goes away after several minutes of hard steering, other times turning off the ignition and then back on resets the issue. once it apparently happened to my son while operating the vehicle at highway speeds. very dangerous situation and ford needs to address it as a covered safety recall issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 20 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to steer. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering gear module failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000. updated 04/04/16*lj

The electric power steering system regularly fails to start when i turn on the car. this seems to happen especially when the car is cold. when it does not start, it often times comes on when i turn on interior lights, put the car in reverse, or restart the engine. sometimes it does not come on at all and i am forced to drive without power steering. i have read many complaints online about this problem happening to other focus owners and have seen that this electric power steering system has caused problems in the fusion as well.

Lost power steering. received "steering assist fault" message. vehicle can be driven, but complete power steering loss. happened intermittently over last year, but usually righted itself upon vehicle restart. last couple of months, the problem is constant... no power steering at all. reading forums, it's obvious that this is a manufacturer problem, but still no recall issued. would cost over $1800 to repair. vehicle has a little over 92,000 miles. other that this issue, great car.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 45 mph, the steering seized. the contact was able to get the vehicle off of the roadway and turn off the vehicle. once the vehicle was restarted, the steering operated normally. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed. the contact was informed that the steering gear and linkage needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 57,514.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering and the power steering assist failure warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the diagnostic results were not provided.the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the failure mileage was approximately 35,000.

Owned car for 2 years, in shop 5 times so far for dct issues. car is completely unpredictable and going to cause me to get in an accident! sometimes i hit the acceleration and it lurches forward unexpectedly causing me almost to rear end someone. other times i hit the gas expecting it to go and i get a really sluggish response to the point where i'm scared another vehicle will hit me, so i will floor it trying to get it to move, this will result in the back wheels locking up and fish tailing! i have had at least six moments in this week where the car responded unexpectedly and made me think i was going to get in an accident. tonight in rush hour i was maintaining a speed of about 20 mph, the car decided to downshift and send more forward a few yards. i want so badly to get rid of this car as i have a baby, but i'm very upside down on it. i have various warranties but have been warned by ford that they are a "one time get out of jail free card" and if the car comes in for the same repair it previously had it will no longer be under warranty! this is horrible, my car is constantly in the shop for the same transmission issue!

Today twice the car steering wheel was hard to drive then when i pulled over, the light came on dashboard and said power steering assist failed service required. what if i was not able to pull over safely.

While leaving home for work during the morning of november, 5th, 2015, the 2012 ford focus would not turn left or right when backing out of the driveway. later in the day, the car stopped twice in the middle of traffic. the steering goes and it becomes very difficult to turn the wheel left or right. it was taken to the local delearship (supreme ford) and they quoted $1905.51 to replace the electric steering rack. that's not including the $108 upfront payment for diagnosing the problem. ford needs to recall this model as i'm now researching lots of consumers having the same issue. are they waiting for someone to seriously injury themself? this is very scary to have experienced. something must be done. it's not right for the consumer to pay for a manfacturing defect in ford's electronic power assisted steering (epas) that they won't recognize as a problem. don't our lives matter????

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that while making a turn, the steering malfunction warning light illuminated as the steering wheel became extremely difficult to maneuver. the contact mentioned that after turning off the vehicle and restarting it, the vehicle resumed to normal function. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the tcm needed to be reprogrammed. the vehicle was repaired, however, failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who stated that the steering column might need to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 59,365.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 25 mph, the power steering light illuminated and the steering wheel became difficult to turn to the right. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where the steering gear was replaced. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 88,000.

Tl* the contact owned a 2012 ford focus. while driving 70 mph, the vehicle independently veered to the left over the double lines without warning. as a result, the driver crashed into an oncoming vehicle. the air bags deployed. the driver sustained fatal injuries. a police report was filed. the vehicle was destroyed and towed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was unavailable.

The chrome trim on the steering wheel has begun to peel in multiple places. this was brought to my attention after some of the peeled areas lacerated my fingers while driving, causing me to abruptly pull my hand off of the steering wheel and swerve the vehicle. i attempted to grab the steering wheel again as my fingers were bleeding. vehicle was in motion on the highway.

My 2012 ford focus sel has less than 9,000 miles. on october 20, 2015 i got in my car to drive it and it was completely dead - nothing worked. my husband took the battery out, had it checked, but it was fine. he put the battery back in and the car started. he then drove my car to his local mechanic to have the battery checked again to see if something was draining the power from it to cause the car not to start. again the battery checked out fine. as my husband was leaving the mechanics, he put my car into reverse, started backing up, and out of no where the power steering went out. he said a power steering fault warning appeared on the dash. i was horrified that this happened and even more horrified that it could have been me that was driving my car when the power steering went out. i'm just relieved that my husband wasn't driving on a major road or highway when this happened. we took my car to the dealership i purchased it from and found out there were a couple transmission recalls for my car. the service guy suggested that one of the transmission recalls was responsible for my car being completely dead and not starting. however, he said there was a power steering fault and the power steering rack assembly had to be replaced and reprogrammed to the tune of $1,700.00. wow. i don't understand how this could happen to my 2012 ford focus sel that has less than 9,000 miles on. how could this happen? i was told the power steering is an "electronic" component and anything electronic can go anytime. is it just a coincidence that on the day that my car won't start due to the ford recall 15b22 that the power steering gets "shorted" out and i end up having to pay $1,711.89 to replace the power steering rack assembly and for them to "reprogram" it? i don't think it's a coincidence these 2 events happened together - electronic components "talk" to each other.

While taking a right turn on a city street my steering wheel immediately became very hard to maneuver. i had to brake as to keep my self from going forward rather than turning since my steering wheel seemed as though it was locked. i then realized the power steering was completely out, then the display and sound came on, stating that there was a steering malfunction and to refer to my manual. i then carefully and forcefully steered the vehicle into a vacant parking lot. i read the manual and attempted to cycle power to the vehicle to clear the issue. this did not work. i now have no power steering and the vehicle sits in the driveway. it has 65k miles and is out of warranty. i would not have purchased had i known soo many had this issue.

Power steering fails while going down the road multiple times. also sometimes when you start the vehicle the steering wheel is locked up for abou 30 seconds then excises to work.

Complete electrical power assist failure. steering almost too difficult to operate. thankfully happened at low speed.

After tcm recall replacement the steering would wander. by this i mean loose wheel at high speeds with tough spots. new tires and alignment have been done with no correction of this problem. ford will not admit an issue and will only diagnose after i agree to pay them for doing so. not going to happen.

While backing out of the driveway the steering suddenly and without warning became very difficult to manage. thinking that this was a temporary issue i attempted to drive the vehicle for a short distance but felt very unsafe to continue my trip and returned home.
