Backing up, vehicle assist warning and loss of power steering occured.
Steering error code comes on more and more frequently. today it froze up on my girl while she was driving and she could have been seriously injured. ford and / or nhtsa needs to do something to get these death traps recalled. what's it going to take??

The power steering assist fault illuminated when i started my vehicle, along with no power steering when i would turn the wheel. restarted the vehicle multiple times with the same result.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving approximately 35 mph, the steering assist module warning indicator illuminated and the steering wheel seized. the contact had to turn the ignition switch off and on to be able to resume driving. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. in addition, while exiting the driveway, the vehicle jerked and lost power. the manufacturer was made aware of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 87,025.
Recently i've had an issue with the starter. the dash stated the car battery was low, i have the car taken to a local mechanic where the battery is testing that it is good. the car will start in the mornings after resting and i don't drive as much as just to be safe while i try to figure out what's going on with this car. i've had this car fixed three times in the past year, once for the customer survey satisfaction (not a recall ford told me) to have the transmission fixed, another to have the steering module replaced and a third time to have the clutches replaced and that was done by a dealership to stop the lurching and jerking that the car does. i'm amazed at the callousness of a company that completely ignores the pleas of people who have almost crashed in their vehicles! no regard for their consumers what so ever!! i promise this will be the first & last ford vehicle that i ever buy.
Power steering failure- started with everyonce in a while id get the error notice of power steering failure so i would turn off the car start it back up and fine, it started to happen more frequently to the imbarrassing point of having to turn on and off the car 5-10 times just to have power steering, then i got a letter to update my car's software to help fix the power steering issue, i got the software update and 3 months later total failure, i now have zero power steering and now ford wants me to pay $2200 to fix it, when it failed i almost crashed into another car with my kids in my car on the freeway, needless to say we are greatful to be alive, sad thing is all other models from 2011-2012 with the same exact power steering system get a recall why not the focus? i wish i would have known before i would have never bought the car, ford is a scam and doesnt back up its product, the power steering is broke because of their defective product
As of september 2, 2016, 3 times within past 2 weeks after starting vehicle get error message "steering assist fault" and there is no power steering. after turning off vehicle and restarting the error has been cleared. concerned of total failure which looks to be ~$2000 to repair or failure while driving, on nhtsa webiste there are 254 steering complaints for 2012 focus, around 50 for 2013 focus and 50 for 2014 focus. there were 5 complaints for 2011 focus which is last model that did not have epas steering. clearly there is a design problem with this epas steering system, am hoping ford does the right thing and recall this to alleviate unhappy customers and potential safety problem.
Power steering failure. happened 4-5 times when i start the car. power steering will not work and i get a message that "steering assist service" needed. turning the car off, restarting usually fixes the problem but i worry what might happen if it fails at 70 mph in traffic. i see many complaints of the same issue on the web. i am surprised ford has not addressed this very common problem.
When i am in park starting the car,. the steering wont work. a message comes up saying the power steering asst system is out. does not steer at all. i turned the car off and on about 3 times then it went away there is an electric motor no pump. .i called to complain and ford says there is not recall. they do however recall other models with the same problem. if..this is not a safety issue i don't know what is? the steering motor goes out? what if it happens when i am on the road. they already told me they wont fix it. it is clearly a recall issue and they wont fix the lesser models
On august 17, 2016, i was driving my focus and while turning a corner, my steering seemed to lock up. i couldn't turn the wheel. i braked hard because i was headed into parked cars. i was able to reverse and park good enough until tow truck arrived. i had it towed to ford dealer in santa monica, ca. the service agent told me that my battery was low and caused my steering issue. i informed him the battery was only one year old. he replied that it had a bad cell. he told me if i put a new battery, it will fix issue. i authorized replacement and picked up my car the next day. on august 26, 2016, i was in my car and a warning popped on my dash, "battery low, check manual." i drove it straight to ford. the service agent checked my battery and alternator and said they both were good. he first told me that warning always comes on when you turn key on but don't start engine. i told him it had never popped on before in the four years i've had the car. he insisted i just hadn't noticed it before. i told him i'm sure that it never happened. so when he test drove it, he switched up his opinion that the warning was referring to the key remote. i asked how because it showed a symbol of the car battery. i told him i hope you're correct and it is just the remote because i was worried that the steering would lock again after he previously said that it went out because of low battery. so i proceeded to drive back to where i was staying and when i turned into a driveway to turn around, my power steering went out. i was not strong enough to steer it well, but was able to reverse as close to curb as possible and again waited to be towed back to ford. end result: they had it for four days, drove it for 72 miles and hooked it up to a diagnostic machine. they could find nothing wrong. i'm afraid to drive my focus. i feel like the steering could go out or lock up at any given moment.
At approximately 70,000 miles, i had turned off my car to get gas. when i restarted the car, i received a power steering assist fault message. the power steering no longer operated. i could still steer the car, but it was extremely difficult. multiple restarts did not resolve the problem. i took my car to the dealer, and they verified the issue. the dealer offered to replace the entire steering rack containing the electronic power steering module for $1700.
Power steering doesn't immediately come one when car starts, the yellow information light appears, have to restart the car to get it on. this was the first week it started. it went out on a nasty curve going 55 mph and almost caused a major wreck and also on the interstate a few hours after that. i had to leave it set a while and restart it before i had power steering. this is very very dangerous!
My car's steering wheel got stuck with a notice saying "power steering assist fault". the first time the problem occurred the car was backing up, and the problem went away when i parked and restarted the car. the second time the problem stayed... the cost to fix the problem was estimated at about $2000 (parts and labor) at the dealership. the mileage was around 60,000 at the time. last week (08/12/2016, at about 72,000 miles), a warning came on about a door being open while i was parking. it was the one at the back on the driver's side. the door would not lock, so i tied it with a seatbelt to keep driving. since then the car goes into panic mode now and then when i leave it locked, probably because the door moves and it feels like someone mechanically forced the latch open. i somehow feel lucky that none of the problems occurred while driving in traffic, but i am now concerned about something else failing (like a door flying open) in worse conditions.
My daughter was leaving a friends house and when she tried to back out the electric power steering light came on. the steering wheel was very hard to turn. she restarted the car and it was fine. she was leaving the ice arena and the same thing had happened again..i have an appointment with the dealer but he wasn't aware of any recalls.. very dangerous id the steering fails while driving.120,000 miles
While driving on the highway 65mph the auto steering went out. very hard to turn the wheel. pulled car over to the side of the road, turned car off and then restarted it steering fine. started back on the highway went a little distance and the same thing happened.
When the car is put into drive or reverse the steering locks and you cannot control the steering. i almost hit car next to me at a grocery store parking lot and my garage wall while backing out. it happens in my driveway, store parking lots, where ever i go and the mechanic experienced it at the dealer. the dealer found it to be the electronic power steering system has failed and it needs a new one costing $2,141.34.
Lurching and uncontrolled shifting occurs with the transmission. it has left me stuck in the middle of a left turn because it doesn't shift correctly. now i ran off the road while exiting a freeway because the power steering turned off in the middle of the turn. this has now happened 6 times randomly. it gives me a power steering fault. i have come close to being the cause of 3 accidents because of these two issues.
I purchased a used 2012 ford focus hatchback in october 2012 that had 29,000 mile on it at the time. i drove the vehicle up to 39,000 and the power steering failed as i was initiating a left turn across traffic. i looked down to see the power steering assist fault error message. the car was out of warranty at that point, and i was out 2,000$ in repairs. i have seen that ford has recalled other vehicles for the same issue, just not the 2012 focus yet. in october 2014, i found the hard stuttering upon accelerating and then i received my first recall notice. a new tcm was installed, reprogrammed, along with a new clutch. about two weeks after that the clutch failed and i had to bring it back in for repairs. about 6 months after that i was driving on the highway at around 70 mph and the dashboard lit up with a transmission malfunction, service now error. i took it to the dealership and they replaced the tcm again and reprogrammed. in august 2016, the car is now at around 65,000 miles. i was driving around 40 mph on a busy city street when i received the transmission malfunction, service now error. i just got the car back from the dealership yesterday, the 4th time, with a new tcm that has been reprogrammed. this car is unsafe, and ford is aware. the technicians i have dealt with all know the exact issue before i explain it to them. i asked for a complaint line, or any options for consumers in my position and was told by both the dealership and the ford customer service hot line that there are none. i asked the technician at the dealership if they knew they were handing me an unsafe vehicle, and he shook his head then stated he wished there was something they could do but i am out of luck.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the power steering failed when the engine started. the power steering would not perform correctly until the engine was restarted. the failure occurred often and the contact stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the failure mileage was 117,000. updated 09/28/16*lj *tr
The power steering on my 2012 ford focus goes out intermittently, once when i was driving, but then it came back on before i had a chance to stop. usually it goes out as i begin to move my car away from its parking place. i have to shut the car off, restart it and hope the problem goes away. one time the problem didn't go away in spite of my stopping and restarting the car, and i had to drive it the rest of the way home without power steering. no fun.
2 major issues: transmission would sudden drop out of gear while driving. several times i was on the highway and it would drop into neutral, leaving me no way to control my vehicle. this was fixed with a ford warranty extension and replacement of the transmission control module (tcm). now, at 74000 miles, i am having a malfunction of the electronic power steering (eps). usually right when i start the vehicle and am backing out of my garage, but occasionally also while driving, a warning code appears on the dashboard saying "malfunction: power steering" and the wheel locks in place. this is very dangerous and the 2012 focus seems to have lots of major issues.
The power steering ('epas' - electric power-assisted steering) system failed in my 2012 ford focus on 7/15/2016. the power loss was intermittent and unexpected at first, randomly shutting off upon vehicle start-up, or shortly thereafter. the power steering eventually experienced full failure on july 15th, 2016 and remains inoperable to this day, leaving me to deal with complete manual steering only. as a result of the failure, steering effort has increased tremendously during stationary and low speed maneuvering. it also makes controlling the steering wheel and vehicle under bumpy road conditions troublesome at all speeds, as well as avoiding lane drift at all speeds. the most concerning result of this power steering failure is dealing with bumpy road conditions, including potholes, which can jerk the steering wheel from my grip at times and veer the vehicle into another lane, or worse, an opposing lane of traffic. this has at times caused mild injury to my wrists and occasionally strain in my elbows when dealing with sudden jerks as well as the immense effort required to turn the steering wheel in stationary or low-speed maneuvering situations. i am a healthy and physically fit young man, & even i have trouble dealing with the steering wheel in these situations. due to the enormous cost of repair, which can cost upwards of $2000, i have been unable to afford repair the steering, which has been inoperable for over a year. the nhtsa has already recalled the 2011-13 ford taurus and flex, 2011-13 lincoln mks and mkt, 2011-12 ford fusion and lincoln mkz, and 2011 mercury milan for the same epas steering failure, but nothing has been done for the focus yet. i worry this issue will potentially cause serious injury or death to me or my loved ones.
Driving at highway speeds the steering wont respond wants to drift into other lanes of traffic.the steering gets loose and tight and when you try to correct for lane drift it takes a second for the steering to respond, this is very dangerous and i called ford and of course they wont do nothing or help in anyway. car only has 42,000 miles on it and of course its not covered but they can fix it for $2000.00. first transmission problems now this.
Vehicle was parked and when started displayed the epas warning/service required message. no injuries since the vehicle was parked, but had the system gone out at speed it might have been a different story. vehicle is driven by my 24 y/o son, and his generation have no experience driving w/o power steering. internet research has highlighted that this is a known issue, as well as a class action lawsuit filed against the manufacturer. early repair cost estimates put the dollar value between $1500 and $2000.
Electronic power steering assist failed several times at start up or low speed july 2016. diagnosed as internal system failure of the steering rack program. the steering rack was replaced at $1900. fortunately, i did not have highway speed failures before the error could be diagnosed and fixed. steering is exceedingly more difficult than old "manual" steering without the power assist.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while attempting to reverse the vehicle, the power steering failed without warning and the steering assist warning light illuminated. the contact took the vehicle to dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering module failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vin was not included in a recall. the approximate failure mileage was 90,000. updated 09/20/16*lj *tr
Turned my car on to take my son to school and immediately the "steering assist failure" alert came on. tried turning the car off and back on but still the same alert. took it to the dealer mins after and they informed me the rack and pinion would need to be replaced costing me over $2000!
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 35 mph, the power steering seized without warning and caused the contact to veer slightly off the road. the contact was able to regain control of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a dealer to be repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 118,000.
Drove car to store on way to work . parked car came out to start vehicle. panel lit up stated" steering assist fault. turned car off remained the same message appeared. called ford motor company was told covered on the powertrain dealer says it will cost over 2000.00 that monies i don't have to spare,
Tl* takata recall. the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign numbers: 15v340000 (steering) and 17v024000 (air bags). the part to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue and was not able to confirm when the parts would become available. the contact experienced a steering failure while driving 45 mph, in which the steering wheel seized without warning. the failure mileage was unknown. vin tool confirms parts not available.
Power steering failure, causing the car to loose power steering while the car was in motion on a highway. the problem was intermittent and was initially resolved by restarting the car. however, a week after the problem first started (and less than 50 driving miles later), the car completely lost all power steering. this all started about a month after an update for a transmission recall. according the ford dealership, a gear had broken in the steering column resulting in the failure. when discussing the issue with a mechanic at a different shop, he said that type of damage typically is the result of significant crash force. the car had not been in an accident. barring an accident, the mechanic said that it was more likely the result of a defective part or component.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. when the vehicle was started, the steering wheel was difficult to operate. the vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the power steering module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
Power steering has intermittently gone out on car. on june 21, 2016 the steering fault light came on while backing out of a parking place. the steering locked up, the fault light appeared and stated service was required. dealership says computer recorded default message but ford motor company will not authorize repairs unless the steering locks up, light and default message appears while in the dealership's possession. we have contacted ford motor company and they refuse to take any action. i have filed a complaint and received a case number -cas9882100- as of june 22, 2016.
Steering wheels locks up and i get a message stating "steering assist fault". this is the second time in 2 weeks that the vehicle has done this when i started the car. the only way i have found to clear it is to stop the car and restart.
The steering gets loose and tight and when you try to correct for lane drift it takes a second for the steering to respond, this is very dangerous and i called ford and of course they wont do nothing or help in anyway. car only has 74,000 miles on it and of course its not covered.
While driving the electric steering assistance fault code showed up. i lost the power steering on the vehicle. the wheel was extremely hard to steer. i was able to limp it home. if this my wife or daughter driving when this happened, i'm not sure if they could have been able to control the car. doing a search on this issue i found multiple complaints file on this issue. this is a extreme safety issue that needs to be addressed by ford before someone is seriously hurt or killed if it hasn't happened already.
The steering wheel became very hard to turn while driving. after the car was turned off, it was still the same. $2000 for repair. came back from the shop with a dead battery. another $180. money i don't have. 76,000 miles at failure.
The electrical steering system stopped working in this car. the steering wheel became very heavy feeling, and was very difficult to steer. the vehicle was in motion on a city street when this first started.
For three years from 2013 to current i reported my car having intermittent electrical issues where my power steering would just fail and my speedometer would cease to function this could happen while driving or stationary.... i reported this to ford and over the course of three years had the issue inspected but they could not resolve the issue.. now the car is out of warranty but say it is due to faulty censors.
On the 6/9/2016 and on the 6/12/2016 i went out to start my car, an indicator light comes on that say stirring assistant or system, it does it very fast, failure. then the stirring wheel becomes impossible to turn. i couldn't leave my drive way.
On 6/82016 i was driving to work in the early morning , as i accelerated forward while turning the corner at a elementary school zone, a steering assist fault error message appeared on my instrument cluster. then i lost all steering and i could not turn the wheel to avoid the small children and parents that were at the corner waiting for me to pass.i slammed on the brakes and avoided a life changing tragedy. i towed the car to santa margarita ford who informed me that the electronic power steering box failed and the repair was going to be $1,895. i called ford and talked to alex (case # tas-9779156-d5j4q5) who took my report , checked and quickly returned with bad news that there was nothing they can do. i asked him if someone needed to die for ford to take resposiblity for this unsafe system, but got no reply.
Power steering fault service assistant
In 2012 i purchased the vehicle from future ford in sacramento california. over the past four years, the car has problems with the transmission, pcm module, transmission control module, clutch, starter, steering wheel, electrical system. i took the car to two ford dealerships for repairs. the service technicians cannot repair the car. i contacted ford motor company many times and they refuse to refund my money and recall the vehicle the car is very dangerous to drive and a risk to my life and safety. updated 07/19/16*lj *cn
Cannot hardly turn the steering wheel at stop and when driving. very dangerous when driving in busy highways. the error message came on says that the steering assist failure. i took it to honolulu ford where i purchased the vehicle they said since my vehicle is out of warranty i have to pay for a rack and pinion system for 2500.00 dollars to fix it. unacceptable from a major company.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 70 mph, the steering wheel became uncontrollable when making turns. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to gordie boucher ford of kenosha (8301 75th st, kenosha, wi 53142, (262) 697-0700) where it was diagnosed that the steering computer needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. the failure mileage was 127,000. the vin was not available.
Takata recall // for several months i have experienced the power steering going out on my car. most of the time it happened as i started the car. i was able to turn off the car and start again and it was fine. few times i was driving and the power steering went out. i looked online and see other ford cars are under recall for rhis problem but not for my focus. ford obviously is aware of this problem and is ignoring it. so does someone have to die before ford takes notice of how many cars they manufactured are faulty and they are putting us comsumers at risk every time we have to be on the road. not everyone can afford an extended warranty or the expense of getting problem fixed. and it should not be up to the consumer to fix faulty car made by ford, it is ford that needs to place recall on this car and fix to have all thier consumers safe on the road. if not i can guarantee i will not recommend anyone to buy ford.
Electric steering gear out. $1650 dollars to replace at the dealership. this is an ongoing issue with ford's bad design of electronic steering. 150 plus complaints with crashes and deaths. this is my 20yo daughters car and thank god she wasn't driving it when it went out. basically a yard ornament now until we can afford to fix it. still making the payments but no chance of driving the hazard to the road car.
Upon engine start, electric power steering does not work. after 10 seconds, it works fine. this happens every time the car is started, except sometimes when it is cold outside, it requires a few start/restart cycles for the power steering to start working. this has been going on for the past 15,000 miles, about 10 months. no fault light has ever come on. steering has never failed while driving. once the power steering comes on, it stays on for the entire time the ignition is on.
