Start with the Grounds

In car lingo, a "ground" is basically where the electricity completes its circuit back to the battery. If it's not connected right, things go haywire, including your transmission. So, always check these first.

Main Ground Wire

This is a short wire connected from the battery's negative side (usually the black one) to a metal part on the car, known as the strut tower. Even if someone's tried fixing it before, let's make sure it's done right.

• Unplug it.
• Clean any rust or gunk using a razor blade. This helps to get a good connection.
• Plug it back in, making sure it's tight.

The Other Grounds

A bit lower down, you'll find two more of these grounds. If they seem clean and untouched, that might be your problem spot.

• Unbolt them (you’ll likely need an 8mm socket).
• Clean off any paint or rust with a razor blade for a good contact point.
• If the small rings (eyelets) connecting them look rusty, clean them too.
• Also, scrape the inside of the bolts to make sure they connect well when tightened.
• Bolt them back in place, ensuring they're snug.
