Crossed rail road tracks truck start shaking so bad like to have lost control at 65 miles per hour
I have experienced what has been referred to as the "death wobble" for ford trucks. while driving on i-35 in oklahoma (december 2019), about 75 mph, hit a small pothole which caused the front end of the truck to shake. i cautiously pulled off the highway to a complete stop to stop the shake/vibrations. i have experienced this shake at various speeds on other occasions. at lower speeds, the vibration damper takes care of the issue. but, i can tell it had started. in my truck, it has not caused a serious loss of control. the above has (thus far) been the worst occurrence. this issue occurs after hitting potholes or large bumps in the road. on another occasion, with severe shaking, the steering damper overcame the vibration as i slowed some, unable to pull off the road then. i purchased this vehicle used at roughly 33,000 miles (june 2019). i now have 41,517 (feb 2020). the issue first occurred around 39,500 miles. out of factory warranty of course. current ford "fix" for issue from ford dealer will cost $2600. looks like a basic replace everything for the steering and hope it works kind of fix. i need to check with extended warranty company for coverage. this should be a recall as it has been a noted problem in ford trucks for over a decade from what i've seen. it will kill someone eventually.
Truck will randomly begin to violently shake and become hard to control the steering wheel when driving, typically at speeds over 50mph. this has happened three times within the last two weeks.
Vehicle is 100% factory equipment .no changes made to vehicle. current odometer 23,750 miles. have experienced "death wobble" 3 times always while traveling about 70 mph. extremely unsafe. typically it begins travelling about 70 mph and contacting an expansion joint in the road or some similar uneven pavement. truck front end begins shaking uncontrollably until speed is reduced to about 50 mph. have done extensive research and know this is alarmingly common on 2017-18-19 f250/350. i personally have 2 friends who own 2018 & 2019 f-250 and both have experienced the same "death wobble". dealer states the needed part to repair problem is on backorder. also stated currently there are 43k of these components on b/o. these numbers make it extremely apparent ford has a huge problem with potentially thousands of unsafe vehicles on the road. the defect usually begins at 15k to 25k miles. as these trucks reach that threshold it will only be a matter of time until someone is killed or severely injured. it is imperative that ford issue a national recall on these model trucks.
While driving home from work running approx 75mph i hit a rough patch in the road after hitting the patch my steering wheel began to shake violently. it felt like the front end was coming out from under the truck. it's almost as the truck started getting a very bad wobble. i was able to regain control of the vehicle once slowing down to around 30mph. i've heard of the term what people call the death wobble. once i hit that patch it felt like the truck was going to shake apart.
Death wobble 4 th time since new truck in currently at the dealership part is on back order at speeds above 50 miles per hour after driving over a bump in the road
2017 ford f-250 with 23,953 miles all original equipment. vehicle was in motion at 60 mph on the freeway, transitioned off a bridge (expansion joint.) violent shaking of front end resulting in violent shaking of steering wheel and entire truck. known as 'death wobble.' applied breaks and once slowed down to 40 mph the vehicle returns to normal operation. very dangerous situation. this is the third time in the las couple of weeks and it is getting worse. took truck to asheville ford before this last time and they stated nothing wrong and they could not reproduce.
At driving speeds when the vehicle hits a crack or dump in the road, the front end shakes violently at which point the vehicle steering is compromised and can only be stopped with a quick deceleration to regain control.
Experienced death wobble on the highway at 70mph, almost crashed due to violent steering shake and loss of control. had to slam on brakes as i was crossing lanes and ended up on the side of the highway.
On 12/16/2019 while traveling 75 mph on i-44 east and west bound between burkburnett tx and oklahoma city. my ford f-250 began violently shaking after hitting some rough road. it did not stop until i reduced my speed to 20 mph. it was freezing weather conditions with dry roads. it did this 6 more times until i was able to get my vehicle back home. upon learning this is a problem know as a 'death rattle' with this type of vehicle steering, i was wondering why this is not a recalled issue..
At approximately 60-70 mph, the vehicle may experience a very violent shaking in the steering wheel, jerking back and forth left to right a few inches. this is not caused by any driver input. it has only occurred while going straight. any small bumps(railroads tracks, pothole, etc) may start or exacerbate the shaking, but hitting anything small objects such as afore mentioned does not guarantee the shaking will or will not occur. usually the shaking of the steering wheel will recede when the brakes are applied and speed is reduced.
crashno fireno injuries0 deaths0 while driving between 65 and 75 mph i hit a rough crossing a freeway bridge. front left tire. the steering wheel started to vibrate violently almost losing control. slowed down to 25 mph to stop steering wheel shaking. this is probably the 3rd time happening. 2017 ford f250. 4x4. must have read 50-60 incidents on internet . even had a name. "shake of death".
Have had a wobble in the front wheels when hitting minor pothole two to three times in front wheels when doing 70mph in the two years since purchase. had to slow down for it to correct. in last three weeks, have had six instance per week when doing 70mph. since tire rotation last week, cannot go over 60mph without the wobble, must slow down to 50-55 to recover.
I purchased this truck new. at 7700 miles i had a severe shaking (known as death wobble)in the steering wheel after hitting minor bump in 4 lane highway. the truck was completely in its own control because you can't turn the steering wheel all you can do is apply brakes and go whoever it goes. on this occasion i had my family in truck. took truck to ford dealership they replaced bushings in front end and told me they never had seen anything like this before. i now have 16,000 miles on truck and i hit a expansion joint in bridge saturday night with my family in truck and the truck did this death wobble again. took it to ford dealership and they said everything was fine in front end and ford only wants to put steering stabilizer shock on truck. i personally think this is a bandaid to get this truck past warranty and out of there hands like so many others. by the way the part is 8 weeks on back order so truck will have to be driven till then like this.
Death wobble was experienced in january of 2019. truck was taken to ford, and per there invoice, tsb 18-2268 was performed to fix problem. on december 12 of 2019 truck experienced the exact same issue that was previously "fixed". both times this happened, i was driving on the highway and the truck involuntarily went out of my driving lane and made truck unable to control until speeds reached around 35 mph.
While traveling on the expressway at 65 mph i passed over a rough piece of asphalt and the truck started to shimmy then immediately severely shake and shudder. i immediately braked and tried to steer to the shoulder steering was almost impossible. the shaking continued till the truck stopped. this was extremely frightening and uncontrollable. this is the third time this has happened but by far the worst. all 3 times the truck was driving normally at 60 or 65 mph till it hit a minor bump or rough patch of road.
At 22000 miles my 2017 f250 fx4 all stock has had death wobble 5 times at highway speeds. bringing to dealer next week.
It has happened several times and continues to be a problem. my 2017 ford f250 while going down the road will go into the death wobble. steering wheel shakes uncontrollably and have to take foot off of gas pedal until it slows down enough to regain conrol. the worst at interstate speeds. it is a danger to my passengers, myself and other vehicles that are around me. have had it to the dealer numerous times with different repair attempts.
The truck hit a small bump in the road while driving around 45 mph and then started shaking uncontrollably. felt almost like the tire fell off. was very hard to keep on the road. after slowing down the shaking stopped. very scary situation to be in. took truck to ford service and was told this was the "death wobble" that many f250's experience. parts were replaced per fords technical bulletin, but from our understanding this problem may re-occur. very dangerous to drive. would like to see a more permanent assured fix.
Experiencing death wobble in front suspension of truck when hitting any bumps, grooves etc in highway travel at speeds of 65 to 75 miles per hour. have to slam on brakes to stop extreme wobble in front end. took truck to dealer for repairs 2 times and they discount issue and will not cover repairs. this issue has happened three times while on freeway 11/16/19, 11/28/19 and 12/6/19
When traveling at highway speeds and driving over a bump in the road, the truck begins to shake violently. slowing the vehicle to approximately 45 mph tends to smooth it out. it was taken to the dealership and the replaced the steering dampener and rotated the tires, but the issue still exists and feels a bit worse and is occurring more frequently than before.
2017 ford f-250 stx fx4. every time i hit a sharp bump or bridge section the front end of the truck shakes violently at highway speeds and have to slow down to 30mph before it settles. on the highway! in traffic!. this happened to me 30+ times coming from a jobsite in the chicago area. i live in florida. i've been reading up on this and it appears to be the death wobble. 100's of people are having this problem with the super duty trucks that ford is producing. when will it stop? will it take a death to recitify this issue? i don't even want to drive the truck anymore. from what i've read, owners have taken the trucks into the ford dealers, getting them fixed and still having the issue several thousand miles down the road. and these trucks are not cheap. averaging $45-80k. please help before someone gets hurt or loses a life.
Traveling down interstate 10 in az. encountered uneven road. traveling at 65 mph pulling a 30' airstream classic trailer. the truck went into a violent shaking in the steering. i could hardly hold on to the steering wheel. i appiled the brake as trucks were swerving to get around me at 75 mph. i had my wife put on the emergency flashers as i could not let go of the wheel. i could not steer or move to the right of the road. truck was literally "hopping" as i tried to slow without getting hit from behind. shaking finally subsided when my truck reached 20 mph. i literally was close to stopped on a 75 mph roadway! i increased mt speed again to about 50 mph and the shaking started again. i had to almost stop again. my wife and i were visibly shaking. we could have been killed. we pulled off on the next exit and called a ford dealer. ford dealer replaced front stabilizer shock. ford is back-ordered on their shock for months. wonder why? we replaced it with a third party shock. the suspension was checked and the dealer said it should be fine. two days latter we experienced the shaking again! we are now stuck in palm springs waiting for a dealer to open on monday. i called ford corporate and they said they did not have a recall on this. they said they will call the dealer and me on monday to get their truck division involved. i cannot drive this truck pulling a trailer with this issue. this is a very dangerous problem. i fear driving this in the mountain with roads that curve. when this shaking occurs, you cannot do anything but go straight.
While driving the truck over 40 mph on uneven pavement or bumps in the road it will send the vehicle into a death wobble and uncontrollable all over the road. i contacted the dealership and was advised of many complaints but no recalls at this time. it is unsafe and dangerous on highways or any roads over 40 mph. we just purchased this truck 12/2019.
I have a 2017 f250 4x4 which has 30,000 miles on it now and is still covered under the factory 3yr/3600 miles and on 9 different occasions while driving over 55mph my truck has began to shake the front end causing loss of control seems to be mostly after hitting a bump in the road or even a when the pavement was uneven each time that this has happened i have been unable to stop the shaking until the truck was below 30mph and last time i was on a 2 lane undivided road the shake caused me to loose control and cross over the center line of the road into the path of on coming traffic, luckily the car coming the other way saw the problem and drove off the road to avoid a head on accident, after the first time it happened i contacted the ford dealer and set up a time to drop it off for service service only to be told that there was a ford motor company tsb 19-2274 and that this has been going on for several years and before this ford also had a tsb 18-2268 then i also found out that before i bought this truck 60 days ago it was in the ford dealer for the same problem and had parts installed that didn't fix it. i have only drove this truck about 1000miles since i have bought it along with my self having this problem when searching the internet i found out that there are hundreds of truck owners having the same problems and that why there has been 2 different tsb issued for this problem most are complaining that after the repair it still does the violent wheel shake or as ford calls it sustained steering wheel oscillation above 45mph.and worst is the parts noted in the tsb is on extended back order and ford gave back the truck and said drive it and we will contact it when the part comes in this is very unsafe the public refers to this as the death wobble and that is truly what it is, my friend has a brand new 2019 with 4k miles on it that he bought new and it also does it.
At 20,000 miles i experienced the " death wobble" at 75 miles per hour on the highway. hit the brakes hard to get slowed down and i regained control at 30 miles per hour.
I have filed a previous complaint regarding the same issue. (complaint number 11279636) stock 2017 ford f250 now with 38,000 miles. the truck has the death wobble. my truck is on its second steering damper and this time the ford dealer replaced the drag link and the outer tie rod. as well, the dealer adjusted the alignment again... the truck is still experiencing sustained steering wheel oscillation and i am again experiencing the death wobble, less than 1,000 miles after the most recent repair. it is very unfortunate that consumers purchase 50k+ dollar trucks and so many people are nervous driving them down the road. working in automotive, the days are often filled with comments such as the following: continuous improvement. review the data, the data will tell the story. change points. root cause and permanent countermeasures. i have reviewed the historical f250 crew cab 4x4 complaint data on this site (nhtsa) and the data does tell a story. ford is not continuously improving the death wobble issue on the super duty, instead it has gotten worse. there has been a change point with this fourth generation f250. (2017,2018,2019) as of 11/21/19 the fourth generation f250 super duty has had more nhtsa suspension and steering complaints for the death wobble than the previous two generations combined. (9 years. second generation 2008-2010 and third generation 2011-2016) the current repairs (countermeasures) are not effective and are not permanent. this can clearly be seen in the descriptions of the complaints on nhtsa. the repairs either do not fix the problem at all or are only a temporarily band aid for the issue. this is truly a safety concern and to date nothing has been implemented to correct the issue. please, open an investigation and encourage ford to permanently address the issue.
Death wobble at 45 mph+ - completely stock truck going 45+ mph and hit a small bump or groove on a regular main road and the truck goes into a serious death wobble
I was driving my f250 on the freeway and after hitting a couple bumps it started doing the death wobble as its called. its a known problem ford has tsb but they don't take this condition seriously as i scheduled an appt with the dealer ship within days and was told the parts are all backordered to repair it and they don't know the date they can get them.
While driving on the highway at 70 mph, if both front wheels hit a bump at the same time, the truck begins to violently shake until the speed is reduced to around 40 mph. this first happened at about 2 years and 40,000 miles. the ford dealership replaced the steering damper and said that would fix the issue. a year later and at 53,000 miles, this began happening again while towing my travel trailer camper. it is about 8,000 lbs and 650 pounds on the hitch. the problem was far worse with the weight distributing hitch than without, however i did experience it twice in about 100 miles on a standard hitch.
While on the highway at approx. 70mph i struck a bump and the front end began to oscillate uncontrollably. the vibration continued until speed was reduced below 40mph. this has occurred twice now. ford replaced a stabilizer after the first occurrence but the problem has returned.
Death wobble occurred at 75mph had to slow to about 15 mph to control vehicle has happened 3 times on a 800 mile trip in heavy holiday traffic current miles 24,900 vehicle currently at dealer for updated steering stabalizer
It's apparently called the death wobble, you are driving at freeway speeds hit a pothole, bump on bridge overpass, ect. wheels start shaking violently, steering wheel shakes back and forth violently. it's very hard to keep control of the truck. very scary and dangerous. i had my dealership work on the problem after the first time i noticed it probably about 19 months ago. didn't have trouble for awhile. recently coming home after thanksgivinig it occurred 3 times on the 2 hour ride home. called my dealership, they're aware of the problem with these models. them supposeded part fix is back ordered and has been for awhile.my truck was new from the factory, $75,000 truck , all stock , i sure hope ford is made to fix these right. i try to avoid driving vehicle on freeway, can't let my girls drive it.was't aware it was such a wide spread problem till i googled it on the internet. there is thousands of complaints on there . this needs to be fixed asap or people are going to get killed.
Death wobble in steering wheel after hiting a pothole at highway speed 60 mph. violent shake in steering wheel. travel was in a straight position.
Experiencing severe steering oscillation (death wobble) under normal highway operation with my factory stock 2017 ford f-250 4x4. vehicle has been taken to my local ford dealership twice for this steering oscillation issue, under factory warranty, and the problem persists. the dealer now states they are unable to replicate the problem and stated a ford factory tech instructed them to increase the front tire pressure to 5 psi over what the door sticker indicates as the recommended psi. the dealer road force balanced the front tires and told me the vehicle could be picked up. i picked up the vehicle and experienced the steering oscillation again on the way home from the dealership. the death wobble normally occurs when the vehicle is traveling straight at speeds between 45 and 55 mph when the vehicle encounters bumps (expansion joints in the roadway) and/or roadway to bridge transitions. the vehicle shakes violently and the steering wheel oscillates rapidly. the vehicle returns to normal function when the speed is reduced to speeds under 30 mph.
While driving on interstate highway at 65 mph, i hit a bridge transition bump and the steering wheel and front end of truck started shaking violently until i was able to get pulled over and slowed down.
When hitting a irregularity in the pavement, especially bridge approaches at 60-75 mph, at times the steering wheel will shake violently. i have a video of this.
Major wobble on the front end. very dangerous.. totally shakes the entire truck. my truck just turned 20,00 miles. i'm scared to drive my truck on the highway. over 55 miles an hour extremely dangerous and shakes when you hit any kind of bump.
When i hit a small bump in the road while traveling at highway speeds the pickup starts to shake real bad. the only way to stop the shake is to slow down to around 45 mph. it has happened 6 times before i could get to a repair shop. they replaced the steering stabalizer arm. after the repair it happened 2 times again in one day. some of the times i was in the fast lane when it happened. in heavy traffic i was glad the other people driving around me was able to slow enough to keep from hitting me. from what i have read on the subject it is what has been termed the ford death wobble. i have 34,000 miles on the pickup. the first time it happened was about one week ago. the last two times it happened was on november 24, 2019. i called the ford service department this morning and they told me that they would have to get back to me. they needed to check to see if there was anything they could do to fix the problem.
Death wobble at any speed above 45mph after going over expansion joint in the highway
I was driving at 75 mph on interstate 10 heading to junction texas. there was an area of highway construction and as i was coming off of this construction there was some uneven road and bumps. my front left tire started to shake, the steering wjheel started to shake and it progressively got so bad that the entire truck was shaking. i had to gently apply the brakes but unable to steer appropriately we veered into the median of i10. i had both my 3 and 6 year old in the truck. had there been a median wall or traffic this likely would have been a serious accident. this same scenario happened 2 more times on our trip both at bridge interfaces.
Several times my truck has gone into a severe shimmy while traveling at freeway speeds. the only way to get it to stop is to stand on the brakes and hope anyone behind me is alert. i have owned a 2009,and a 2013 f-250 and never had this problem with them.
Death wobble at speeds of 60-70. uncontrollable tell vehicle is brought to a complete stop. happens on highways. hard to control truck. this is dangerous.
My 2017 ford f-250 has been experiencing what is referred to as 'death wobble'. while traveling down highway my steering wheel shook uncontrollably and i almost went into oncoming traffic. had to quickly stop on side of road. took the truck to dealer and they replaced something but not sure what. after a short time, it is occurring again. this problem is very dangerous and appears to be widespread. please help with this before people are killed. the dealer said they have a fix but it is on back order. i don't think it's a fix at all and simply a bandaid.
I had just stopped for gas and got back on the highway and was in the passing lane going over a bridge deck and as soon as i came off the bridge the truck started shaking horribly. i let the car next to me pass as i slowed down and pulled over. scared myself and my uncle to death and still had to drive 160 miles to get home. after returning home i have taken it to the local dealer and they replaced damper steering linkage but as our family vehicle we do not feel comfortable in it's safety!
At 70mph vehicle hit a small elevation change in the roadway causing the vehicle go into what the dealership called a "death wobble". steering wheel shook and it felt as if all wheels were bouncing in different directions. i was traveling straight on a highway at the time the "death wobble" started. i was able to slow and pull into the center divide.
My truck has experienced the death wobble two times at normal highway speeds. it is a very scary feeling when it happens i have contacted ford and they seem to not care enough to issue a safety recall on this known issue that has a technical bulletin issued for this very problem. so i wrote a letter to the manger of customer relation hoping they would acknowledge this. my local ford dealer has fixed numerous trucks with this issue in the past year
2017 ford super-duty f-250 pick-up truck; violent shaking of front end while driving at various highway speeds. my vehicle began to shake violently on 2 separate occasions, for seemingly no reason, while driving at normal operating speeds. rapid deceleration required immediately to regain control of vehicle. both occurred while operating on paved roads ( freeway/expressway and 2 lane highway ) - no pot holes or bumps hit, that i am able to recall.
I was driving approximately 70 mph and drove over a bridge expansion joint. the steering wheel and front end started to shake violently. i immediately let off the accelerator and held the steering wheel tightly. i did not attempt to steer the vehicle in fear of losing control. it was about 35 degrees fahrenheit with damp roads. this was the first time it happened. several hours later i was driving over another bridge and experienced it again. my truck has 10,600 miles and the tires are in great shape.
2017 f250 when traveling at speed of 65 on major hwy the steering went into a death wobble where there was a slight imperfection in hwy very difficult to control.
