Problems with 2013 Ford F-150 STEERING

Service advancetrac light appears on dash, and then steering assist fails completely. very difficult to steer, went straight and almost hit a cyclist. on a corner, cyclist to my right, truck wanted to go straight. had to brake very hard to avoid hitting them.

After starting from a stop sign, attempted to make a left turn. the power steering failed, a fail was annunciated on the instrument cluster, steering was extremely difficult, the engine remained running. drove about 400 feet to a safe spot turned off the engine and parked the truck. when the tow truck arrived the driver started the engine and the power steering worked normally. towed the truck to a garage to have it checked. 78, 700 miles on truck

Had a failure of the power steering assist with no warning indicators or tell tell signs of imminent failure while travelling. evident while turning and difficulty increased as speed was lowered.

Today while driving my 2013 ford f150 at 30mph on a county road, a warning popped up that said "hill descent control fault" as the power steering failed. luckily i was driving straight ahead at a slowed rate of speed. after this i could barely turn the steering wheel making for very unsafe driving conditions. also the turn signals quit working shortly afterwards. the vehicle has about 50,000 miles on it, and looking around on the internet would lead me to assume this is a very common problem that is a definite safety concern for any in or around one of these vehicles. i also noticed that the next model year of this vehicle received a recall on this very problem. my wife also drives a 2013 f150 and i'm afraid to let her drive it anymore, it took all i could do to steer it, i can't imagine she'll be able to do the same when hers fails.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while reversing from a parking space or driving at various speeds, the steering wheel seized and the service advancetrac, power steering assist fault, and low battery feature temporarily turned off warning indicators and error messages illuminated. the contact mentioned that the failure recurred on ten separate occasions. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the the error codes needed to be cleared. the codes were cleared and reset, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the electric steering gear needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 67,000.

Just over 26k miles and for last month when starting my car in the morning it shows power steering fault on my dash. seems once ilet it warm for 10mins or so and restart the car it works again.

Ford's electronic power assisted steering (epas) system failed while i was driving in traffic at a slow rate of speed. the steering was very difficult to manage the truck to the side of the road. i turned off the truck and re-stared it, and the steering was fine. the same event happened 3 times before i could get the truck into the shop for the $2,000.00 replacement. cannot believe that nhtsa has not recognized this as a systemic failure worthy of a recall. hundreds of f150 trucks are having this problem. only a brief amount of research on the internet reveals that this is a systemic failure issue.

On our 2013 f150 ecoboost, the power steering assist is an electric motor that is prone to failure. ours failed at 27,000 miles. losing power steering in a turn could be very dangerous as the vehicle is extremely difficult to control without it. furthermore, the differential of effort would lead a person to believe their steering failed completely. there was no real warning that the power steering was about to fail aside from some cryptic warning messages on seemingly unrelated systems.

First of all my truck just now hit 30,000 miles. when starting the truck 3 days ago it gave us a display message of 'power steering assist fault' and we had no power steering to back out of the driveway. i turned the truck off, waited a minute then back on it didn't happen again. the next day it happened again while starting. did the same thing of turning off waiting then back on didn't do it. backed out of the driveway and while going down the street to get about 30mph it faults again and we can't steer. stop the vehicle in the middle of the road, thankfully still in our neighborhood and turn it back on. made it to work. got in truck to leave work and it happened again. same process turing it off and on. got home. then again this morning it happened again with the fault display. turned it off and on again. but this time it did it twice in a row. and had to be turned off again. took it in for a diagnostic and nothing shows up!! of course!! drove to work. had to run an errand and it did it again when i started it then again while i was driving down the street about 20mph, thankfully it wasn't too busy, i put on my hazards and turned truck off and on and finished driving. what happens when it happens on the highway? do i need to crash and kill someone or my family and kids to get a recall? the 2014 is recalled that uses same parts so i'm not sure why these aren't as well. included is the picture taken this morning when it did it again.

Power steering made a grinding noise when the steering wheel was turned fully to the left. a warning regarding the stabilitrack system appeared on the dash. subsequently while i was driving on a street power steering assist stopped, resulting in very difficult steering. my mechanic scanned the computer and found that the steering angle sensor failed.

At times when turning left the power steering will just stop. have to force it back to center. sometimes drifts to left also. this is covered by a recall for 2014 but not 2013 and they use the same parts.

Received dash messages stating "service advance trac" and "hill descent control fault" resulting in inop full detent turn signals, yet 3-blink lane change retained function. steering angle dash readout remained inop regardless of steering input. returned vehicle to a ford dealer for diagnosis. was advised entire steering rack requires replacement. ## vin passed ## ford f150 2013 ##

Received power steering assist fault and was unable to turn vehicle. searching online ford has recalled older models of the f150 but there are numerous complaints of this happening on several ford models. this is a serious, serious safety issue. further ford is screwing customers over by not recalling these vehicles and making customers replace the entire steering rack at a cost of almost $2000.00 at minimum this should be included in extended warranties which it is not. vehicle was reversing out of my garage when the fault occurred and it cannot be reset. the vehicle is now inoperable.

When i turn on and place the truck in drive, my steering wheel locks up to where i cant use steering wheel, i get a error on dash stating "assist power steering failure. i place truck in park and turn vehicle off, and restart and problem seems fine, until steering wheel locks up while driving and i get this same error. ford dealer is charging me $2000 to fix this problem. this could cause a major crash. i believe ford should have this recalled and pay for this.

The service advance trac light came on when i started up my truck for the day. i lost all power steering control and the blinkers stopped working. my truck is a 2013 f-150 with only 38,000 miles. this is a serious safety problem that ford knows about and you, the nhtsa knows about the problem. it is time that something is done about this safety problem. is everybody going to wait like gm did until there are multiple fatalities before this is addressed? do something!

I was driving and made a right turn and the power steering gave out for a few seconds. then once i straightened back out i could not reproduce the problem. this has happened several times but can happen when turning either way.

I purchased my 2013 ford f150 three weeks ago, certified pre-owned from mountain view ford in chattanooga, tn. while pulling out of my driveway this morning, the truck was engaged in 4x4h mode,(due to inclement weather) it started making a terrible popping noise that sounded like the front left tire was coming off as i was turning to the right. i pulled over and let the car idle for a while. i then kept driving and when going up a steep hill it started doing it again, so i pulled over at a gas station and the loud popping/banging noise happened again as i was turning left this time. it was so loud it startled the customers who were fueling their vehicles. sounded like a piece of metal snapping in two. is this related to nhtsa # 10058199? or ford tsb 44964? i had to disengage the 4x4h and put my truck back in 4x2h a to make the noise stop. we had icy roads this morning, which is the reason i purchased a 4x4 to begin with.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving at approximately 35 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion gear assembly needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 78,637.

While making a left hand turn at approximately 15 miles an hour the power steering went out and i got a "power steering assist fault" warning. no prior warning of any problems that this might be about to happen. fortunately one of my teenage daughters were not driving it. they would not have been able to make the turn. took it to dealership and it was out of warranty due to mileage and not included in power-train warranty. and no recalls on this item, although through research i see there is one for the 2014 year model. the dealership has informed me that it will cost me 1800 dollars for the repair.

While driving i had an immediate loss of the power steering. it changed to manual steering without any warning. if i had been driving on the interstate or at a higher rate of speed i could have had a major accident. i see the ford cars are recalled for this same issue. i also noticed the 2015 has a recall for steering issues. apparently, the 2013 has issues also. this was a scary situation that is a huge safety risk. i couldn't drive the truck once i got it parked on the side of the road. i had to get it towed to the dealer for repair. ford will charge us about $1500 to repair it.

The truck makes a grinding/popping sound when turning over any terrain. feels like something is loose or a wheel is going to fall off.

I was driving down freeway and went to exit and heard a sound with a warning light with advancetrac service and power steering default. i was unable to move my steering more than just a few inches left or right and stopped immediately. i had to get it towed to the dealership do to the steering was unable to function any longer.

I was driving down the road at 55 mph and without warning my steering wheel all of a sudden got very stiff and difficult to steer and immediately 2 messages came up on the dash reading "service advancetrac" and " electrical power assisted steering fault". as i panicked to changed lanes and get to the shoulder i was almost struck by another vehicle by the lag caused by the power steering failure. turning became very exhausting and tedious just to change lanes or turn the tires. i tried starting and re-starting my truck, but to no avail. the day i got my truck towed home, i parked it and have not touched it since, for i fear my life will be in danger if i drive it in those conditions again. i am aware of other recalls of previous and later model years of my same vehicle from other owners with the same issues. if this hasnt been brought to the attention of ford motor company, yet, i hope it does before some serious/fatal incidents occur, such as mine, becuase of this particular problem.

'takata recall' after starting vehicle, before starting to drive, check engine light comes on and then when driving is started there is no power stirring. occasional if you turn engine off and then restart, check engine light does not come on and power stirring is intact. this has happened on and off since 5/2015 at 40,000 miles and continues to this date 11/4/2017 at 95,000. it is happening more and more often now.

Backing out of my garage i turned the steering wheel all the way to the left and the power steering made a noise and the advance trac warning and hill descent warning came on. as i continued to drive it each time the wheel needed to be turned to the left the same noise would occur and the steering wheel would resist turning. soon the problem increased to be both directions and i took it to the shop and they disconnected something so there isn't any power steering. this could affect someone driving and cause them not to turn.

While driving my truck the power steering went out and the dash flashed power steering assist default. this happened 4 times that day and each time if i stopped and turned the truck off and restart it would be fine. this happened randomly. took it to the dealer and they act like they know what is going on but refuse to tell me exactly what. the say the rack is out. the 2014 has a problem for this and is under a recall but the 2013 they are making me pay and my extended warranty is refusing to pay. sounds like ford know about this but are trying to cover it up. the dealer ship said it must be a big deal id they want the core back after replacing the rack. *tr

Bad steering vibration when braking at highway speeds. took vehicle to dealer and they indicated warped rotors that had to be machined back to proper surface - already!. vehicle is only a few months old, only approx. 15k miles. have noticed online that others have had the same issue. this seems like a safety concern with ford using sub-standard brake rotor materials. additionally, the vehicle would drift to the left - dealer indicated alignment issue, but required $450 additional kit in order to allow for adjustment since it was already at peak of specs (vehicle has never had alignment since it was new, vehicle has never had an incident that would cause misalignment). vehicle seems unsafe with these issues and now that the rotors are 'thinner' due to the resurfacing, the warping will likely occur more frequently until they (and other brake parts and/or suspension and steering parts) need to be replaced. this can lead to premature brake, component, suspension and steering systems wear and/or failure which should be a major safety concern. ford would not warranty the alignment issue and extra cost nor replacement rotors but only resurface ('turn') the original rotors. *tr

Knocking in the steering wheel while driving on smooth roads, felt mostly during warmer temperatures above 80 degrees f. most noticeable above 95 degrees f when driving on flat roads that require no counter steering to maintain the lane. taken it to ford twice and have been told once that the knock could not be felt, second visit to a different dealer the service manager felt the problem but the front end technician stated it is normal road feel. both front tires are wearing on the outer two treads as if the front end needed an alignment but both dealerships have checked the alignment stating it is good. very concerned about the handling characteristics of this truck, the same high temperatures also cause the truck to be very sensitive the crosswinds and passing vehicles. any malfunctioning steering problems should have the attention of the ntsb for safety concerns and certainly the consumer protection agency that needs to protect people who purchase vehicles with full warranties but who's problems are being ignored by manufactures. *tr

While driving on interstate 81 near dixie caverns, virginia, while entering curve on interstate, the steering seemed to fail and would not turn. impacted the guardrail and came to a stop. no other vehicles were involved. the system to alert 911 also failed. the horn honked for approximately one minute the side curtain airbags deployed. truck was damaged on the entire passenger side. inquired at dealership about steering problems with fords and was told there were none. *tr

Very noticeable popping/bouncing/knocking of steering wheel/column when going over bumps. occurs at all speeds and all steering angles. *tr

I was driving my month old brand new ford 150 and completely loss power steering. thank goodness i was going straight or i am sure that it would have been a lot worse . it is still in the shop they think the steering rack is gone and now i am driving a crappy toyota camry as a rental . so not happy i bought ford because they had a great reputation and love the truck but this is unacceptable. *tr

The front end shakes and shimmies @ lower speeds,say less than 50mph from the time we received it. i gave it some time and @ 543 miles i took it in . the dealership determined it was the drive shaft ,@ first it felt good, but it was my hoping it was the problem.so here we are, if they don't ,how the [xxx] am i suppose to know.the dealership never mentioned they was an issue with the front end. after reading online of the problems with front ends i haven't been back.so here we are...... information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

While driving at speeds around 40 mph the steering wheel has a rattle felt through it. it feels as though the electric power steering is giving feedback or the front shocks are loose. at speeds around 70 mph, this cannot be felt. ford techs rotated and balanced tires, but that did not fix it. they mentioned that the new electric power steering system works based upon speed. this problem appears to be worse at low speeds and ok at higher speeds. there is definitely a problem that ford needs to fix! *tr

While driving in a straight line under 40 mph i can feel a banging in the steering wheel traveling up the steering column it feels like the front of the truck is loose. this happens while driving on smooth roads as well as rougher roads, and is more pronounced when the temps outside go above 75 degrees and the longer i drive it the worse it gets, if it is a cooler day out it does not happen. ford service dept. wants to change out the lower steering shaft, but i don't think that is going to solve the problem. i know there are issues with the electronic power steering units in these trucks that cause these symptoms. i don't think a brand new $50,000 truck with 1600 miles on it should be having any problems. *tr

While driving on the interstate with cruise control set approximately at 70mph, i stepped on the gas to accelerate past a vehicle. the truck did not respond but decelerated and the steering wheel began to shake. the check engine light flashed. i continued to drive and with only slight pressure to the gas to maintain speed. after approximately 5-10 seconds the vehicle regained power. the incident happened a second time, same conditions same results. the ford dealer says its a known problem with parts back ordered. this seems unacceptable if its a know problem. someone can get in a serious accident at highway speeds if they pulled out in fast moving traffic expecting acceleration to be there. *tr

Takara recall steering almost locks up while driving (stuff)but only while making small lane adjustments

I experienced a knocking in the steering wheel when driving over small bumps.. it feels like something is loose in the steering. it is getting worse in hot weather. dealer said it is normal. *tr
